CLEVELAND (WJW) — The Cleveland Guardians are preparing for a must-win Game 2 of the American League Wild Card Series against the Detroit Tigers. The second game of the best-of-three series is Wednesday at 1:08 p.m. at Progressive Field.
The Guardians had a tough loss against the Tigers in Game 1 on Tuesday. But they’re only one game behind Detroit. If you remember, earlier this season they were 15 1/2 games behind Detroit. So players said they’re not worried.
“We’re going to bounce back,” said manager Stephen Vogt after Tuesday’s game. “We’ve done it all year. We love having our backs against the wall. We’re going to come out hungry and be ready tomorrow and ready to take one.”
“Our backs have been against the wall all year,” agreed Guardians catcher Austin Hedges. “We’re not in a place that’s new to us. We’re going to respond really well and come out with our best effort tomorrow.”
The team has to win Wednesday and Thursday or their season is over.
Progressive Field was packed with more than 26,000 fans Tuesday afternoon and the team is hoping for another big turnout for Game 2. Tickets are still available.
Tanner Bibee will be starting pitcher for the Guardians Wednesday. Bibee was 3-0 against Detroit this season.
“A lot of nerves going into your first postseason game” said Bibee. “It’s different, but it’s not. We faced these guys for two weeks. We earned our way here just as much as they did.
Cleveland fans we spoke to leaving the field Tuesday were disappointed in the loss but remained optimistic.
“There’s always a chance for Cleveland,” said fan Cooper Siurek. “Everyone doubts us, so why not make it interesting? Why not play some more October baseball?”
Game time Wednesday is 1:08 p.m. If they win, they will play at Progressive Field at the same time on Thursday.
