Christine Van Bloem to share heart-healthy cooking

GROTON — Whole grains can be simple to add to everyday meals with the right techniques, and a local virtual program will show home cooks how to do just that.

The Groton Public Library will host “Whole Grains for Everyday” from 7 to 8:15 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, via Zoom.

Participants will learn how to prepare Farro Bowls and Fall Harvest Quinoa, with tips on coaxing maximum flavor from healthy ingredients.

The class will be led by Christine Van Bloem, a longtime cooking instructor who has turned her attention toward healthier cooking since surviving a heart attack in 2020. Formerly the owner of a brick-and-mortar cooking school, Van

Bloem now focuses on teaching home cooks how to make flavorful meals with lighter, heart-healthy adjustments.

“Instead of using a stick of butter, I’ll use a touch. Instead of a cup of cream, just a tablespoon or two,” Van Bloem explained, adding that she strives for a balance between health and flavor.

Now an empty nester, Van Bloem has re-learned how to cook for two and enjoys sharing that journey with others. She has also trained in culinary nutrition with The American College of Culinary Medicine, where she researched the Mediterranean diet and menopause for her capstone project, passing the exam in 2024.

“Online classes are so much more fun than I ever anticipated,” said Van Bloem. “It’s such an incredible way to make a connection with students around the country and even help impact their dinner table. Isn’t that great?”

This program – made possible, in part, by the Groton Public Library Endowment Trust and presented in cooperation with several area libraries – will be recorded, and all registrants will receive a link to the video within 48 hours.
