(KRON) — The man killed while trying to rescue his 5-year-old daughter from strong surf at Garrapata State Beach in Big Sur Friday was identified as 39-year-old Yuji Hu of Alberta, Canada, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) announced.
The daughter was declared deceased, and her body was recovered from the beach, according to the latest update from authorities Sunday evening.
Around 1:20 p.m. Sunday, a diver located the body about 100 yards offshore and roughly half a mile north of the child’s last known location. The diver brought the child’s body to shore and notified California State Parks, the sheriff’s office said.
MCSO later confirmed the body was the missing daughter’s. According to MCSO, family members say the child was 7 years old. Initial reports said the child was 5 years old. The sheriff’s office did not release the daughter’s name.
Hu was attempting to rescue his daughter from 15 to 20-foot waves when they were pulled into the ocean. The mother tried to rescue them and was also swept into the water. The mother was able to return to shore and was hospitalized for mild hypothermia. The family’s 2-year-old child was unharmed.

An off-duty California State Parks Officer pulled Hu from the water and gave him CPR. He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Despite an extensive two-day search involving numerous rescue agencies, the 7-year-old child was never found.
“Large-scale search operations have now been suspended,” the sheriff’s office said.
