SAN JOSE, Calif. (KRON) — A child was killed after being hit by a vehicle Tuesday afternoon in San Jose, the San Jose Police Department said. The crash happened around 4:21 p.m. in the area of Leigh Avenue and Camden Avenue.
The child was on a scooter and died at the scene, police said. He was 11 years old. According to his family, his name is Esias Amaru Ramos-Berhane. He was of Peruvian and Eritrean descent.
“Our hearts have been broken open into a million little pieces,” Esias’ parents wrote in a statement to KRON4. “We miss him so much already. The pain is indescribable and unbearable. He was larger than life to us.”
Esias recently graduated from Bagby Elementary School in San Jose, according to his family. He was set to attend Ida Price Middle School.
The driver, an adult male, remained at the scene to cooperate with the police investigation. The vehicle involved in the collision was a 2006 Chevy pickup truck, according to police.
The pickup truck was headed west on Camden Avenue on a green light when it struck the child, who was crossing against a red light on a non-electric scooter at the intersection of Camden and Leigh.
The death marks the 30th traffic fatality in San Jose. Around this time last year, there were 28 road fatalities in the city.
A memorial was held on Wednesday for the child as flowers were placed near the scene of the crash (pictures below).
Max Siegel with Families for Safe Streets said that, as a father, this incident is enraging. “This is what I fear more than violence in San Jose,” Siegel said.
Siegel said the road fatality rate is outpacing the murder rate in the city and that something needs to be done.

“If this was hitting the 30th murder in San Jose we would be up in arms,” he said. “We can place traffic cones; we can place traffic barrels to slow things down.”
SJPD initially reported that the child was 12 years old. The department has since corrected itself to say the victim was 11.
