Cesar Benavides changes up the theme of his home Halloween haunt every season, but after seeing all of the reaction he’s gotten to this year’s haunt, he’s going to stick with it for years to come.
They call it “Invasion on Gregory,” but this year it’s all about Disney-Pixar’s classic movie “Coco.” The yard is decked out with references to the film but also the Day of the Dead Celebration that’s at the center of its story. Cesar has Papel Picado hung over the yard. These are the colorful paper banners that are traditional Mexican folk art. They symbolize the fragility of life and the breath and wind that guides the spirits.
The rest of the yard features hand painted “Coco” characters made from plywood. He has skeletons dressed as more characters from the movie. There’s a 12-foot tall Miguel and a hand painted 7-foot tall Dante. The yard also features an Ofrenda to honor and welcome those who have been lost during celebrations on Dia de los Muertos.
You’ll see the actual “Coco” movie playing in the home’s front window, and the yard is pumped full of smoke that has a popcorn smell to it.
Cesar posted a video of his yard display to TikTok where it went viral, earning more than 100,000 views. I’ve had multiple people send it to me over the last few weeks, remarking at how detailed and well done the theming is throughout the yard.
