Charlotte Hornets add four players on Exhibit 10 contracts – At The Hive

[ad_1]

The Charlotte Hornets announced that they’re adding four players to the roster on Exhibit 10 contracts.

The players are:

  • Caleb McConnell, wing
  • Marcus Garrett, wing
  • Keyontae Johnson, wing
  • Joel Soriano, big

McConnell and Garrett played with the Hornets in the summer league this past summer, and Garrett played with the Swarm last season. Both were relatively quiet in the summer as role players, but clearly the team liked what they saw enough to keep them around for training camp.

Joel Soriano signing was originally reported back at the end of June after the draft, but nothing really came of that until now. He spent his last three collegiate seasons at St. Johns, where he was a productive starting center for the team. He averaged a double double across his last two collegiate seasons and chipped in a little over an assist and a block per game as well.

Keyontae Johnson is the most notable name from the group. His career and life looked to be in jeopardy when he collapsed during a game while at Florida, but he was cleared to play and went on to finish his college career at Kansas State. He was taken in the second round by the Oklahoma City Thunder and appeared in nine games for them. He has the talent to eventually find himself in the NBA if he keeps improving.

Exhibit 10 contracts are essentially non-guaranteed deals that set teams up to fill out their G League affiliate. If a player is released from an Exhibit 10 contract (which they usually are), they get a rather significant signing bonus if they sign with that teams G League affiliate. For all intents and purposes, a player signing an Exhibit 10 deal is going to be in camp with the NBA team and then end up on the G League team for the start of the regular season.
