HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – History and mystery will intertwine at Forestdale Cemetery as Wistariahurst Museum hosts its annual Cemetery Tours on Saturday, Oct. 11.
The guided walking tours, scheduled at 3 p.m., 3:20 p.m., 3:40 p.m., and 4 p.m., will invite guests to step beyond the gates of Forestdale Cemetery and learn about the lives of Holyoke’s ancestors through stories told by museum volunteers.
Established in 1860, the cemetery is the resting place for many of the city’s founding families, politicians, and community leaders.
“Learn some of Holyoke’s history through the tales of the people that lived and died here,” said Penni Martorell, city historian. “Forestdale Cemetery is such a unique and beautiful setting to reflect on the history we share with the people you will see represented in our tour.”
The 45-minute tours will bring visitors along the cemetery’s paths lined with monuments, markers, and crypts. Organizers recommend comfortable footwear and weather-appropriate clothing, as tours take place outdoors on cement and gravel walkways. In case of rain, tours will be canceled and refunded, but not rescheduled.
Wistariahurst describes the event as a blend of history, reflections on the afterlife, and local storytelling designed to create a “spooky and educational” fall experience. Tickets are expected to sell quickly and can be purchased online through Eventbrite.
More information about Wistariahurst and upcoming events can be found on their website.
