LAS VEGAS — Fans gathered to show their support for the San Francisco 49ers in Las Vegas and in San Francisco’s Mission District Saturday night, gearing up for Sunday’s Super Bowl showdown.

CBS News Bay Area cameras captured the growing excitement on Saturday night at the Westgate Sports Book and Joey’s Tavern, a popular gaming bar on W. Craig Rd. that has long been a stronghold for the 49ers Faithful in Las Vegas.

In addition to an appearance by the San Francisco 49ers Gold Rush cheerleaders, Joey’s on Saturday hosted autograph and meet-and-greet sessions with Niners legends John Taylor — the gifted wide receiver who caught passes from Joe Montana and Steve Young and ’80s-era cornerback Eric Wright. Both players were on multiple 49ers NFL championship teams, with Taylor playing in three Super Bowls and Wright playing in four.

The Super Bowl takes place Sunday, Feb. 11, starting at 3:30 p.m. PST at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

You can tune in to watch the game broadcast live on both CBS and Nickelodeon or watch the livestream on Paramount+. More information on the game and how to watch is available at CBS Sports.

There are plenty more stories to read in the run up to the Super Bowl from both CBS News and CBS San Francisco, including where to find a Super Bowl watch party in the Bay Area, a look at some of the Super Bowl fan experiences available, the skyrocketing price of tickets to the big game, the crackdown on counterfeit NFL merchandise in Las Vegas and the record-setting amount of gambling expected for Sunday’s game.

  • College basketball: UCLA holds off Cal Bears 61-60

College basketball: UCLA holds off Cal Bears 61-60

BERKELEY — Cal fought back from a 14-point second-half deficit but could not close out a season sweep of UCLA on Saturday afternoon in the final meeting of the in-state rivals before they head off to new conferences next season.

The Bruins (13-11, 8-5 Pac-12) prevailed 61-60 in a game that had four lead changes in the final 1:05, preventing the Bears (10-14, 6-7) from winning for the fifth time in their past six games in front of 9,280 fans at Haas Pavilion.

UCLA won its fifth straight game and is 7-2 since losing to the Bears at Pauley Pavilion on Jan. 6.

Cal has not swept both games in a season against the Bruins since the 2011-12 season, and won’t get the chance anytime soon. The Bears will play in the ACC next season while UCLA moves to the Big Ten.

Fardaws Aimaq put the Bears in front 55-53 on a putback of his own miss with 1:05 left before the Bruins called timeout. They went right to big man Adem Bona, who scored from the post and converted a free throw for a 56-55 lead with 50.4 seconds left.

Aimaq then tipped in a miss by Jaylon Tyson, giving the lead back to Cal with 45 seconds left. But guard Dylan Andrews sunk a mid-range jumper and UCLA was back in front 58-55 with 25.3 seconds left.

Tyson, who led the Bears with 16 points, missed on a contested drive to the basket and Lazar Stefanovic made two free throws for a 60-57 lead with 16.4 seconds left. Sebastian Mack inched the lead to four points by making the second of two free throws with 4.5 seconds to play.

Cal’s Jalen Celestine made a running 3-pointer with 0.1 seconds left.

The Bears trailed 50-41 when Tyson triggered an 8-0 run that pulled them within a point.

He scored on a backdoor dunk off a pass from Aimaq then returned the favor, assisting Aimaq on a 3-point basket. Finally, he fed Jalen Celestine for a 3-pointer that made it 50-49 with 5:56 to play.

Tyson’s jump shot with 3:05 left put the Bears up 51-50, their first lead since 7-3. Stefanovic answered with a 3-pointer or the Bruins but two free throws by Aimaq tied the score at 53-all with 2:20 remaining.

The Bruins led 35-24 at halftime as the Bears shot just 36 percent (8 for 22) in the opening 20 minutes. Tyson scored 10 points for Cal but his teammates combined to make just 5 of 17 shots as the Bears wound up with their lowest-scoring first half of the season.

UCLA erased an early 7-6 Cal lead with an 11-0 run during which time the Bears missed three shots and turned the ball over three times against pressure. The lead swelled to 19-10 when Andrews made two free throws, capping a 15-2 surge with 11:42 left.

The Bears pulled within 22-16 on a layup by  Aimaq with 8:36 left but the Bruins built their advantage to 29-16 with an 8-0 run that included a 3-pointer by Stefanovic.

Residents react after park worker found fatally stabbed in Pleasant Hill

A Bay Area family is in mourning after a Pleasant Hill park worker was found stabbed to death Saturday.

The incident happened in a normally very quiet neighborhood next to the popular Pleasant Hill Park. Residents in the area say they normally feel very safe.

“We feel safe on our walks around here,” said Leona Frankel of Pleasant Hill.

37-year-old Santiago Jacobo worked as a janitor at Pleasant Hill Park. Jacobo, a father of two young children, typically returned home to Pittsburg shortly after his shift.

But on Saturday, police said Jacobo’s wife waited and was really worried when she didn’t see him return home from his shift Friday night.

“She became concerned when she hadn’t returned home from working his shift at the park last night, so she drove to the park,” said Capt. Matt Kristic with the Pleasant Hill Police Department.

Just before 5 a.m. Saturday, police said Jacobo’s wife found him unresponsive in a parking lot next to the park. She called 911 and when paramedics arrived, they determined he had been stabbed but were not able to revive him.

Pleasant Hill resident Irene Enekov, who was walking her dog early Saturday morning, said she was shocked to hear that she had stumbled onto a homicide investigation in the park of all places.

“I just asked do you know what happened, and the woman said it’s my brother who is dead,” she said.

Others were unsettled hearing about how this hardworking father was killed.

A GoFundMe page has also been set up to help the family pay for funeral and other expenses.

Pleasant Hill police have not identified a suspect and is asking for anyone with information to call them.

  • Gilroy’s Beloved Garlic Shoppe Forced to Bid Farewell to Iconic Location

Gilroy’s Beloved Garlic Shoppe Forced to Bid Farewell to Iconic Location

The Garlic Shoppe, a recognizable pitstop for thousands of travelers who relish in the unique garlic-themed offerings at the busy crossroads of Highway 101 and State Route 25 in Gilroy, is being uprooted from its long-time home.

The abrupt move was mandated by the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Agency (VTA), which, under eminent domain, acquired the property to build a new intersection at the location, per KSBW.

It’s reportedly part of a nearly $140 million project to replace Highway 25’s two-lane over-crossing with a four-lane over-crossing over Highway 101, increase the length of Highway 101 off-ramp, upgrade traffic signals, and add bike lanes.  The VTA fast-tracked the project at the beginning of this year, according to the Chronicle. And when it did, the Garlic Shoppe location came under fire because it in particular has a higher-than-average rate of accidents.

The owners, brothers Alex and Charlie Larson, told KSBW that they found out days before they were required to move. As Charlie told the outlet, “We’ve been here for 39 years. Alex is 62, and I’m 63. We are planning to retire a few years…now we have to basically start all over again.”

The Garlic Shoppe is apparently planning to migrate to its sister winery, Rapazzini Winery, just down the street. The Larson brothers say they will continue selling their garlic-infused products there until the end of the year, when they’ll hopefully be able to find a new permanent home for the store.

We’ve got comedy shows, craft activities, dance parties, and maybe that pillow fight. Whether you’re trying to live, laugh, love, or cry, here are 10 things to do in the City by the Bay this week.

    1. Bark at Spark’s “Puppy Love,” Spark Social SF (Feb. 10) Bring your dog to hang out or adopt one at the Mission Bay venue. Pet-centric vendors will be selling treats, toys, and accessories. There will also be some DIY Valentine craft stations and plenty of photo-ops.

    2. Valentine’s Craft & Learn: Lover’s Eye, SF’s Museum of the Eye (Feb. 10-11) Get crafty for Valentine’s Day by learning about and then making “eye miniature portraits,” an 18th-century fad in which participants wore jewelry with paintings of their loved ones’ eyes on them. One of the Bay’s most unique museums, Truhlsen-Marmor Museum of the Eye, is hosting workshops Saturday and Sunday afternoons, but spots are limited.

    3. Naked Bike Ride 2024, Rincon Park (Feb. 10) The “World Naked Bike Ride” is rolling through San Francisco on Saturday, and you can join in. This one’s theme? The “Love Parade.”

    5. Lunar New Year 2024 Crazy Funny Asians Comedy Showcase, Neck of the Woods (Feb. 10) It’s not just Valentine’s Day, it’s also Lunar New Year, the theme of this weekly comedy show. This time, local comics include K. Cheng, who’s also hosting the SF Chinese New Year Parade Pre-Show, Helen Chu, Numaan Shaikh, Albert Lin, and Ashwin Bala.

    6. The Arab American Comedy Festival, Palace of Fine Arts (Feb. 10) The long-running festival is also happening this weekend in San Francisco. It’s the 20th anniversary of the show, and headliners include Maysoon Zayid, Dean Obeidallah, Atheer Yacoub, Aron Kader, Reem Edan, and Sammy Obeid.

    7. S.F. Beer Week, various locations (Feb. 9-18) If you’re not trying to laugh your way through Valentine’s Day and just drink your way through instead, consider S.F. Beer Week’s plethora of events. There’s something for everyone, with different breweries and bars hosting special menus, exclusive happy hours, and limited releases.

    8. Anti-Valentine’s Day 80s Power Ballad Sing-Along, Roxie Theater (Feb. 14) As part of SF IndieFest, the Roxie Theater will blast the genre of music made for people that hate Valentine’s Day: 80s power ballads, from Journey to Guns ‘n Roses to Bon Jovi to Warrant.

    9. Love Bites: Halloween in February, The Eric Quezada Center for Culture (Feb. 10) The Queer Chorus of San Francisco is hosting its annual Anti-Valentine’s Cabaret, featuring solo and ensemble numbers, that celebrate/satirize both Halloween and Valentine’s Day.

    10. Possible the Valentine’s Day Pillow Fight, Embarcadero Plaza (Feb. 14?) The annual SF pillow fight is always a last-minute flash mob-style gathering, and there’s no news about if it’s taking place yet. In the past, organizers have set up Facebook events as announcements, so keep checking.

  • Mills honors late coach Dave Matsu with league title

Mills honors late coach Dave Matsu with league title

ATHERTON — When the buzzer sounded, the Mills girls basketball team gathered at mid-court to celebrate a gusty 46-40 win over Menlo-Atherton Friday.

The sound of cheering screams from the players and parents in the stands could be heard from the parking lot. The Vikings had just captured the Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division title in a game where it looked like they were going to come up empty handed.

As both teams walked through the handshake line, Mills coach Justin Matsu congratulated the Menlo-Atherton coaches, walked to the end of the his team’s bench and broke down.

With his team hugging and cheering with each other near midcourt, the 5-foot-10 head coach took off his thin-framed black glasses and wiped away tears from his eyes.

When he looked up, his mother Julia was waiting to embrace him. As they both shed tears of joy, she told Matsu how proud she was that he got his team here.

Friday’s win for Mills meant a lot more than just winning the league title. For the Vikings, the win was in honor of Justin’s father Dave Matsu — the long-time Mills coach who died of a stroke in October.

“These girls have done such a great job of playing with a fire from within that my dad fueled,” Matsu said.

“They’ve helped me out more than I have helped them. Just getting through this whole process, we’re gonna try to keep this thing going.”

Dave and Justin Matsu led Mills to its first Central Coast Section Title since 1985 last season. When Dave died, Justin Matsu took over as head coach before this season started.

The stakes were high for both teams coming into Friday’s game. If Menlo-Atherton had won, the title would have been shared between Mills, Menlo-Atherton and Carlmont as all three teams would have had a 6-3 record in league play.

The pressure of the game looked to have caused some nerves early for the Vikings. Mills didn’t score a basket until the 1:04 mark of the first quarter and went into the second quarter with just four points total.

Mills trailed by as much as eight in the second quarter, struggling to find a rhythm offensively.

“I think nerves played a part in the slow start,” Matsu said. “It’s a tough place to play and shoot, so I knew we just had to find our groove on the offensive end.”

With the Vikings down 19-14 at halftime, they needed a spark on both ends.

Matsu felt that an adjustment or big halftime pep talk didn’t need to be made. Instead, he believed he just needed to lean on the players that got the team to this point.

After a relatively quiet start to the game, junior guard Sophia Kwan put the team on her back in the second half. Kwan didn’t miss a shot in the third quarter and made a curling mid-range jumper that gave the Vikings their first lead of the game at 26-24 with just under two minutes left in the third.

Kwan finished the game with 23 points with 16 coming in the second half.

After three, Mills was down 30-29. An 8-0 run from the Vikings to start the fourth quarter gave them a comfortable seven-point lead with five minutes left in the game.

It was a shift in mentality for the Vikings who looked timid early. But with each made shot in the second half, their confidence continued to grow.

“We just knew we could do much more than what we showed (in the first half),” Kwan said about the Vikings’ second half run.

But Menlo-Atherton wasn’t going away just yet. The Bears cut the lead to just two with under 30 seconds left in the game.

With the league title on the line, it was the Vikings’ two best players who sank the biggest shots of the night. Senior Michelle Tang, who finished the game with 12 points, went to the free throw line and sank both of her foul shots to make the score 44-40 with 15 seconds left.

Kwan closed the game, hitting the final two free throws of the night as Mills pulled off the win.

“We didn’t want a shared title,” Tang said. “To get this win for Dave means more than anything for us.”

For Mills, winning the PAL Bay is just the start of what the Vikings hope to accomplish this season. After winning a CCS title last season, the team said they came into this year expecting to do a lot more.

“Right before the season we had a coaches meeting with my dad and he wrote out our goals in a notebook,” Matsu said. “All he wrote was league, CCS and Norcal. We have a long way to go before we get to the last two, but it’s just so nice to get one of these for him.”

  • Super Bowl security extends to sky above Las Vegas

Super Bowl security extends to sky above Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS — When the Chiefs and 49ers hit the field on Sunday, teams from U.S. Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations (CBP AMO) will be patrolling the sky above Las Vegas.

CBS News Bay Area correspondent Max Darrow flew with CBP AMO’s Daniel Pinkerton, an air interdiction agent, and Sandra Pinkerton, an aviation enforcement agent, to get a better understanding of their role in Super Bowl security.

“We’re up here to increase situational awareness by downlinking video from a very unique perspective that only a platform like this has,” Daniel said. “What Sandra is doing over here — she has the fleer in TV mode and is looking at the stadium. We can transmit that to incident command center.”

They’re keeping an eye out for the unexpected or have eyes on certain areas they’ll get directed to. The team will be up in the air before, during and after the game.

“This world is so dynamic and the threat is so diverse, it’s hard to categorize what we’re looking for,” Daniel said.

Super Bowl security takes an extensive amount of interagency teamwork at the local, state and federal level, which is why CBP, a part of the Department of Homeland Security, is involved.

The FAA will issue a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) for much of Super Bowl Sunday, centered around Allegiant Stadium with a 10-nautical-mile inner core.

If someone flies into that zone, Sandra says, a team will respond.

“That’s going to trigger a response from our Blackhawk helicopters and the Department of Defense,” she said. “They’re going to try and intercept that aircraft and direct it to land at an airport.”

Providing security for special events like the Super Bowl is a part of CBP’s mission, which is something both of these agents take pride in carrying out.

“It’s part of the fabric of America — events like this — where we can all come together, celebrate together and support that we can do it safely,” Daniel said. “We take tremendous pride in being a part of the team that does their best to afford that opportunity.”

“It feels good to go to bed at night knowing that we did the best we can to keep American people safe,” Sandra said.

  • 2 dead, 23 hospitalized from eating recalled cheese: CDC

2 dead, 23 hospitalized from eating recalled cheese: CDC

(KRON) — Two people have died and 23 more were hospitalized after eating queso fresco and cojita cheese products, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said this week. Several products containing these cheeses have been recalled due to a Listeria outbreak. The hospitalizations date back to 2014, but an investigation into the outbreak was recently re-launched.

In total, 26 people have gotten sick in 11 states. Eight of those sick cases and one death were in California, the CDC said.

There may be more sick people related to this outbreak, as it typically takes 3-4 weeks to determine whether a sickness is part of an outbreak, per the CDC. The true number of people affected is believed to be higher than 26 due to people not getting tested for Listeria.

The illnesses related to this outbreak started in 2014, according to the CDC. The CDC investigated the outbreak in 2017 and 2021 and re-launched it in January after new illnesses were reported in December 2023.

“WGS (whole genome sequencing) showed that bacteria from sick people’s samples from 2014 to present are closely related genetically. This suggests that people in this outbreak got sick from the same food,” the CDC said.

The company making the contaminated cheese is Rizo-Lopez Foods, which is based out of Modesto, according to the CDC. In January 2024, the Hawaii State Department of Health’s Food and Drug Branch conducted routine sampling on Rizo-Lopez cojita cheese and identified the outbreak strain of Listeria. The FDA inspected the Rizo-Lopez facility and found the outbreak strain on a container where cheeses are kept before they are packaged.

On Feb. 6, all cheese and dairy products made by Rizo-Lopez were recalled.

A handful of products containing these cheeses have been recalled, including several from Trader Joe’s. Amazon Kitchen’s Chicken Chili Verde Burrito and Fresh Express’ Salsa! Ensalada Salad Kit are among the others to be recalled.

Listeria is especially dangerous for people who are pregnant, older than 65 or have weakened immune systems, per the CDC. Symptoms can be felt as early as the day the contaminated food is eaten or as late as 10 weeks later.

If you bought a recalled product, here is what the CDC recommends:

    • Do not eat any recalled products.
      • Throw them away or return them to where you bought them.
    • Clean the refrigerator, containers, and surfaces that may have touched the recalled products.
      • Listeria can survive in the refrigerator and can easily spread to other foods and surfaces.
    • Call a healthcare provider right away if you have these symptoms after eating recalled products:
      • Pregnant people usually have fever, muscle aches, and tiredness.
      • People who are not pregnant usually have fever, muscle aches, and tiredness. They may also get a headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or seizures.

4.6 magnitude earthquake strikes Malibu area in Southern California, USGS says

LOS ANGELES — A preliminary-magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck the Malibu area on Friday afternoon and was felt throughout much of the greater Los Angeles area.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the epicenter of the earthquake, which struck at 1:47 p.m., was located about 8 miles southwest of Thousand Oaks, and was measured at a depth of 7.5 miles.

Where was the earthquake felt across Southern California?

The Los Angeles Fire Department reported that it was “widely felt” in Los Angeles.

ABC7 viewers reported feeling the temblor in Huntington Park, San Bernardino, Lancaster and Costa Mesa. We felt the earthquake strongly at the ABC7 Studios in Glendale.

    Were there aftershocks?

Within an hour of the initial earthquake, about 16 aftershocks hit the immediate area, ranging from magnitude 3 to 1.8, according to USGS.

Map shows 15 aftershocks near Malibu area after 4.5 magnitude earthquake. The earthquake hit at 1:47 p.m. on Feb. 9, 2024. The map shows aftershocks that happened through 2:31 p.m.

Is there a tsunami warning due to the earthquake?

“NO tsunami, NO danger from a recent earthquake,” U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center said in a social media post shortly before 2 p.m.

Was the Malibu earthquake related to the one that hit Hawaii?

The quake was not related to a 5.7-magnitude earthquake that hit Hawaii’s Big Island on Friday, seismologist Lucy Jones said.

What does Dr. Lucy Jones say about the Malibu earthquake?

There was no immediate report of damage or injuries. Jones said the magnitude of the quake was not of a severity that would cause expectations of damage.

Seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones discussed a magnitude 4.6 earthquake that struck the Malibu area and was felt throughout the greater Los Angeles area.

“It’s sort of run-of-the-mill for earthquake country,” Jones said.

The quake was initially measured at a magnitude of 4.7 before being downgraded, the USGS said.

Anniversary of the Sylmar earthquake of 1971

The Malibu earthquake struck on the 53rd anniversary of the 1971 San Fernando earthquake, which was recorded as magnitude 6.6. Also known as the Sylmar earthquake, it killed 64 people and caused over $500 million in damage.

A Michelin-trained Napa chef is caught up in the Super Bowl frenzy on several fronts.

While he’s busy serving up Kansas City inspired Super Bowl fare, his cousin is a 49er.

Chef Darryl Bell of Stateline Road Smokehouse has been swamped filling hundreds of orders of ribs, brisket, wings and other barbecue favorites for Super Bowl weekend.

“We came in running today and it’s not stopping and it won’t slow down,” said Darryl.

But while the chef’s been going gangbusters in his Napa kitchen, his cousin is gearing up to go gangbusters on the field.  Wide receiver Ronnie Bell is the chef’s cousin.

“Ronnie Bell he’s a beast, special teams wide receiver. It’s his rookie year, coming straight out of Michigan and he’s just been crushing it,” said Darryl.

The chef says he couldn’t be more proud of his cousin, but the Kansas City native says the Chiefs and Niners matchup is a bit difficult for his family who are lifelong Chiefs fans.

“It’s a little tear there, a little split, but I think ultimately I just want Ronnie to do great as I know he will … and for the Chiefs to do great as well,” he said. “I am rooting for a great game, I would say. The Chiefs are always there, but I would say ultimately Ronnie is blood so you gotta go with family.”

The Michelin trained chef says his culinary creations are Kansas City inspired. In fact, his signature barbecue sauce is named after his hometown.

“For us what we do here it’s all Kansas City style so that’s obviously where I’m from,” he said. “Mixing that but kind of with the culinary Michelin world background to kind of create a slightly more elevated in terms of flavor for barbecue.”

Derryl says he’ll be happy no matter what the outcome of Sunday’s game. And hopes his barbecue dishes make his customers feel like winners no matter what too.

“This becomes the highlight of the game that this for them is something where all their guests that they have to their house say ‘wow the game was great but this food, those burnt ends, those ribs were amazing,’” he said.

Derryl and his partner plan to open this new 5,000-square-foot location this spring.

There will  be plenty of room there for both Chiefs and Niners fans.

  • CHP plans San Francisco freeway exit closures in Mission District after Super Bowl LVIII

CHP plans San Francisco freeway exit closures in Mission District after Super Bowl LVIII

Caltrans issued a traffic advisory Thursday, announcing that there would be multiple freeway offramp closures in San Francisco Sunday night after the end of Super Bowl LVIII between the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Caltrans plan with the California Highway Patrol appears aimed at discouraging people from coming into San Francisco to celebrate in the event of a 49ers victory that would mark the team’s first Super Bowl win in almost three decades. Officials took similar action on the night of the NFC Championship Game almost two weeks ago.

The closures are scheduled for multiple offramps along the U.S. 101 and I-280 corridor in San Francisco the evening of Sunday, Feb. 11.  Caltrans and CHP are assisting the San Francisco Police Department with the closures of off-ramps tentatively scheduled to start at 7 p.m. that will continue until midnight.

The freeway exits scheduled to be closed are as follows:

    • US-101 Southbound, Cesar Chavez St.  off-ramp
    • US-101 Northbound, Cesar Chavez St. off-ramp
    • US-101 Northbound, Mission St./Duboce St. off-ramp
    • I-280 Northbound, San Jose Ave off-ramp
    • I-280 Northbound, Geneva Ave off-ramp
    • I-280 Southbound, Geneva Ave off-ramp

“These ramp closures in San Francisco are necessary to enhance public safety due to an anticipated increase traffic and pedestrian congestion during the National Football League game scheduled for Sunday afternoon,” the statement said.

Muni also issued an advisory regarding bus service in the the Mission during and after the game.

Starting at 5 p.m., Muni bus service will avoid using Mission Street, 24th Street and 16th Street in the Mission District, the SFMTA said. That will continue until streets are clear.

The following Muni routes will be re-routed:

    • 14 Mission, 14R Mission Rapid and 49 Van Ness/Mission will use Guerrero Street from 15th to Cesar Chavez streets.
    • 12 Folsom and 27 Bryant will use Potrero Street between 22nd and Cesar Chavez streets.
    • 22 Folsom, 33 Ashbury/18th Street and 55 Dogpatch will use 14th and 15th streets between Guerrero Street and South Van Ness Avenue.
    • 48 Quintara/24th Street and 67 Bernal Heights will use Cesar Chavez Street instead of 24th Street between Potrero and Valencia streets.

On Friday, San Francisco police confirmed there would be “traffic closures in the Mission District” but did not specify which streets would be shut down or when the closures would take place. When the 49ers beat the Detroit Lions in NFC Championship Game on Jan. 28, bot Mission Street and 24th Street were closed for a period of time.

“Officers will have a visible presence throughout the city before, during, and after the game with safety as our priority,” police said in the released statement. “The SFPD will not tolerate violence, property destruction, or other criminal activity.”

The statement also encouraged those participating in Super Bowl festivities “to do so respectfully and responsibly” and to avoid driving while intoxicated.

Authorities used a similar tactic when the Golden State Warriors beat the Boston Celtics in the 2022 NBA finals, closing I-80 exits to keep Warriors fans from swarming the area around the Chase Center after the team’s Game 6 win.

  • Kansas City, Bay Area breweries make friendly wager on Super Bowl to benefit charity

Kansas City, Bay Area breweries make friendly wager on Super Bowl to benefit charity

SAN FRANCISCO — Las Vegas is the hub of sports betting but there’s a lot of friendly wagers being made for Super Bowl LVIII, including one in the Bay Area that combines football, beer and charity.

21st Amendment Brewery is always game when it comes to making a friendly wager.

Folks here remember the bitter 49ers’ Super Bowl loss four years ago and they hope to get some payback on Sunday.

“We had to give them lots of beer and we had to wear Kansas City gear. I think that was the worst part of it all,” recalled 21st Amendment’s Vee Feyhling.

In 2024, 21st Amendment was quick to respond when Boulevard Brewing Company of Kansas City suggested another bet.

“Four years later, here we are again and they said they don’t want to bring this back up and I was like ‘oh yes we do!’” Feyhling said.

“We like having fun with our fans. We like supporting other breweries and the Super Bowl just gives us another opportunity to do that in a really fun way,” said Adam Hall with Boulevard Brewing Company.

While there will be beers, swag and bragging rights on the line, there really are no losers in this friendly wager. Each brewery has vowed to make a donation to a local charity.

“We are supporting the 49ers Foundation. They are a great organization, one that helps youth and it’s a great opportunity to give back to them,” Feyhling said.

Hall added, “We’re going to ask for a charitable donation for Win for KC. It’s a local nonprofit that supports and empowers women in sports.”

21st Amendment is feeling confident that the 49ers can close the deal this time around but Chiefs Kingdom is certain KC will be coming home with another ring.

“Did you watch the last game? Because that’s what everybody thought until the fourth quarter. I would say, even in Kansas City, no one’s going to turn their TVs off until the game is over,” Hall said.

While there may be a debate on who will take home the Lombardi Trophy, the bet between the breweries is a win-win situation — not only for the charities but also for the breweries who will get to expose their brand to customers in a different region.

“You know this rivalry with a friendly wager — it’s all about beer and helping out charity and just fun,” Feyhling said.

“I think it’s just indicative of craft breweries at large. Just how well we get along and how we can root against each other in the game but, when all is said and done, we’re going to drink a beer whether it’s theirs or ours and we’ll cheer the champs,” Hall concluded.

  • Man arrested after stolen plane makes emergency landing on San Mateo Co. beach: sheriff

Man arrested after stolen plane makes emergency landing on San Mateo Co. beach: sheriff

SAN MATEO COUNTY, Calif. (KGO) — San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office says a man stole a single-engine plane from Palo Alto Airport and made a crash landing near Poplar Beach.

SKY7 got video of the single-engine two-seater, nose-down just south of Poplar Beach in Half Moon Bay.

Sheriff’s officials say they received reports the small aircraft landed on the sand at around 5 p.m.

When officers arrived the plane was unoccupied, but witnesses saw the pilot walk away.

Thanks to a witness’s description of the pilot, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office arrested the suspect within minutes.

Sergeant Javier Acosta said the suspect is a 50-year-old man from Miami, Florida.

“I’ve been doing this for almost 20 years and this is a first for me,” Acosta said.

Kathleen Kennedy of Santa Clara said the plane flew right over her – twice.

“The first buzz was so fast, it was a normal speed and it flew right over my head – like 20 feet over my head,” Kennedy said.

She thought it was a mayday call or something illegal.

“It was very unnerving because it’s well below the flight deck it’s well below 500 feet. So that’s why I thought it was a mayday or they were up to no good,” Kennedy said.

The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office is working with the Palo Alto Police Department on this case.

The Sheriff’s Office said the suspect has been arrested and booked into jail.

“Most important, I’m glad no one else was hurt – I mean that could’ve been really bad,” Kennedy said.

  • Bay Area, KC food banks have Super Bowl battle

Bay Area, KC food banks have Super Bowl battle

(KRON) – In the spirit of the Super Bowl, Bay Area food banks are tackling hunger through a friendly competition with Kansas City food banks. The two sides are hoping to rally fans of the 49ers and Chiefs to donate to help their neighbors in need.

This effort is called the “Huddle to End Hunger.” It’s a competition between three Bay Area food banks and Harvesters in Kansas City.

Each side is hoping to get the highest number of donations by Super Bowl Sunday as the 49ers and Chiefs compete to be Super Bowl champions.

SF-Marin Food Bank, Second Harvest of Silicon Valley and Alameda County Community Food Bank are counting on 49ers fans to donate more than Chiefs fans to help their neighbors in need. Cody Jang with SF-Marin Food Bank says every dollar counts.

“Hunger is a huge issue everywhere all over the country, and we can only focus locally in the Bay Area, and for all the funds we get donated, every dollar we get we can turn it into two meals worth of food,” he said.

This competition is a rematch between the Bay Area and Kansas City. The first faceoff was in 2020, when the Niners and Chiefs met in Super Bowl LIV.

Kansas City won on the field and in that year’s donation drive. SF-Marin Food Bank is hoping to change that this year.

“Whatever the result is on the field, people in both cities are going to benefit from this and so no matter what, you’ll be doing good for people in your community,” Jang said.

If you’re interested in donating, click HERE and find your food bank of choice. As of Friday night, the Bay Area donations were beating the Kansas City donations 171-86. You have until midnight after the Super Bowl to donate.
