  • New San Ramon earthquake swarm shakes East Bay; 4.2 magnitude shaker felt across Bay Area

    Another swarm of earthquakes centered in San Ramon shook the East Bay on Monday morning, including a 4.2 magnitude quake felt across a wide swath of the Bay Area, authorities said.

    The U.S. Geological Survey said the first earthquake, measuring a 3.8 magnitude, struck just before 6:30 a.m. in the area just south of Bollinger Canyon Road between Alcosta Boulevard and Dougherty Road. At least 20 additional earthquakes of at least a 2.5 magnitude struck that same general area over the next several hours.

    The 4.2 quake hit at 7:01 a.m. and was centered at the southern end of the Canyon Lakes Golf Course, according to the USGS.

    It is the same area where multiple swarms of minor quakes have struck since November 2025 and have been felt across the Tri-Valley, with the largest being a 4.0 magnitude shaker on December 19. San Ramon, which sits atop the Calaveras Fault, has seen other small quake clusters over the years for reasons that are not fully understood.

    No significant damage was reported on Monday, but residents and some businesses reported items falling off shelves.

    BART trains were running at reduced speeds following the quakes as the agency worked to complete track safety inspections.

  • Patriots and Seahawks will kick off Super Bowl festivities with the annual Opening Night media blitz

    SAN FRANCISCO  — Drake Maye and Sam Darnold will face a different type of blitz at Super Bowl Opening Night.

    Here comes the media frenzy: thousands of reporters from across the globe gathered for a zany spectacle that kicks off the week’s festivities on Monday night.

    Maye and the New England Patriots (17-3) take on Darnold and the Seattle Seahawks (16-3) on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers.

    First, they will meet more than 6,000 credentialed “reporters” who will pepper them with questions ranging from the standard football topics to the silly and off-beat stuff.

    An event that began as a daytime introduction of the teams has evolved into a live, ticketed, prime-time showcase on national television.

    Maybe someone will propose to Maye, like a female reporter dressed in a wedding dress and veil once did to another Patriots quarterback: Tom Brady.

  • ‘The Kelly Clarkson Show’ will end after current season

    After seven seasons, NBC’s “The Kelly Clarkson Show” will go off the air, the show announced Monday, saying host Clarkson “made the personal decision to step away.”

    “There have been so many amazing moments and shows over these seven seasons,” Clarkson said in a statement.

    Production on the current season of the Daytime-Emmy winning talk show will continue as planned with Clarkson hosting, a press release said. There will also be “a few” guest hosts. The show will air through fall 2026.

    The announcement was shared Monday with the show’s staff and crew, according to the release.

    Clarkson said “this was not an easy decision,” but that stepping away from the daily schedule will allow her to “prioritize my kids, which feels necessary and right for this next chapter of our lives.”

    “This isn’t goodbye. I’ll still be making music, playing shows here and there and you may catch me on ‘The Voice’ from time to time … you never know where I might show up next. But for now, I want to thank y’all so much for allowing our show to be a part of your lives, and for believing in us and hanging with us for seven incredible years,” the host said in her statement.

    “The Kelly Clarkson Show” has won 24 Daytime Emmy Awards since its debut in 2019, including four straight wins in both the Outstanding Daytime Talk Series and Outstanding Talk Show Host categories.

    The show was initially based in Los Angeles but relocated to 30 Rockefeller Center in New York ahead of its fifth season.

    Anti-ICE messages from the stage

    Billie Eilish won song of the year for “Wildflower” and used the moment to add her voice to the chorus of musicians criticizing immigration authorities Sunday.

    “No one is illegal on stolen land,” she said while accepting the award for the song from her 2024 album “Hit Me Hard and Soft.” “(Expletive) ICE is all I want to say.”

    Immigration was a pointed theme of the night. The first time Bad Bunny was on stage – after winning the award for música urbana album – he used his speech to share an anti-ICE message, highlighting the humanity of all people.

    “Before I say thanks to God, I’m going to say ICE out,” he said, starting out his speech in English to huge applause. “We’re not savage, we’re not animals, we’re not aliens. We are humans and we are Americans.”

    Before that, Olivia Dean was named best new artist.

    “I never really imagined that I would be up here,” she said, receiving her first Grammy while wiping away tears. “I’m up here as a granddaughter of an immigrant. I wouldn’t be here … I am a product of bravery, and I think that those people deserve to be celebrated.”

    Kendrick Lamar, Lady Gaga, Jelly Roll and more win big

    Kendrick Lamar and SZA won record of the year at an electric 2026 Grammy Awards Sunday night for “Luther.”

    Cher presented the award and mistakenly said it goes to “Luther Vandross” instead of Kendrick Lamar and SZA.

    One of the song’s producers, Sounwave, began the acceptance speech by saying, “Let’s give a shoutout to the late and great Luther Vandross.”

    Lamar also won the first televised award of the night, rap album for “GNX,” accepting the trophy from Queen Latifah and Doechii.

    “It’s an honor to be here,” he said in his acceptance speech. “Hip-hop is always going to be right here … We’re gonna be having the culture with us.”

    The victory means Lamar broke Jay-Z’s record to become the rapper with the most career Grammys. Jay-Z has 25; after he took home rap album and record of the year, Lamar’s total is 27.

    Pop vocal album went to Lady Gaga for “Mayhem.”

    “Every time I’m here, I still feel like I need to pinch myself,” Gaga said in her speech.

    Pop solo performance went to Lola Young for “Messy,” whose speech playfully lived up to the song’s spirit.

    “I don’t know what to say,” she joked about “obviously” not having a speech prepared. “I’m very, very grateful for this.”

    The inaugural contemporary country album category went to Jelly Roll for “Beautifully Broken.”

    This year, the Grammys renamed country album to contemporary country album and added a traditional country album category, a distinction that exists in other genres. But the news arrived right after Beyoncé’s “Cowboy Carter” won best country album, inspiring backlash online.

    “I believe music had the power to change my life,” Jelly Roll said in his acceptance speech, which he spent the majority of thanking God.

    Pharrell Williams received the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award.

    “To everyone in this room who believes in the power of Black music,” he said, “thank you so much.”

    And Cher was presented the 2026 Lifetime Achievement Award. “The only thing I want you to take away,” she said, “I’ve been in this business for 60 (expletive) years. I just want to tell you, never give up on your dreams.”

    A live concert experience

    A powerful Grammy Awards in memoriam segment celebrated the legacies of the late D’Angelo and Roberta Flack at the 68th annual ceremony Sunday night.

    Ms. Lauryn Hill appeared on the Grammy stage for the first time since 1999, when she became the first hip-hop artist to win album of the year for her “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.”

    The D’Angelo tribute was first: A medley of several songs, among them “Brown Sugar” with Lucky Daye, “Lady” with Raphael Saadiq and Anthony Hamilton and “Devil’s Pie” with Leon Thomas.

    Then, Hill focused her attention on Roberta Flack: “First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” with Jon Batiste, “Where Is The Love” with John Legend and Chaka Khan, and a mesh of “Feel Like Makin’ Love” and “Killing Me Softly with His Song” with her Fugees bandmate Wyclef Jean.

    If there was one set that felt like avant-garde artistic performance piece on Sunday night, it was Tyler, the Creator’s medley of “Thought I Was Dead,” “Like Him,” (in which he was joined by Regina King) and “Sugar On My Tongue.” It played out like theater: others would be wise to take note.

    All eight nominees in the best new artist category participated in a medley at the award show across multiple stages, the back halls of the arena and even the venue’s loading dock. It was an interesting and impressive mod-podge of different styles, from the British soul of Lola Young and Olivia Dean to Addison Rae and Katseye’s hypnotic pop. The Marías kicked things off with their dreamy indie rock; sombr and Alex Warren offered their radio hits – “12 to 12” and “Ordinary” respectively. Leon Thomas reminded the audience why he’s the only nominee also up for album of the year with his fully formed R&B.

    The hits arrived fast and furious in the show’s first hour. Rosé and Bruno Mars’ opened Grammys with an electric rendition of their multicultural pop smash, “APT.”; the Blackpink singer channeled a pop-punk Gwen Stefani in her tie and platinum blond hair. Sabrina Carpenter with her “Manchild” kiss-off. Justin Bieber slowed things down with “Yukon” from his comeback record “Swag.” Lady Gaga reimagined her hit “Abracadabra” as an electro-rock song.

    Surprises were abundant – even before the show started

    An exciting, early theme of the 68th Grammy Awards? First time winners.

    During the Premiere Ceremony held at the adjacent Peacock Theater in Los Angeles ahead of the main show, the Dalai Lama won his first Grammy for audio book, narration and storytelling recording, beating out Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson. You read that correctly.

    “Golden” from “KPop Demon Hunters” won song written for visual media at the Premiere Ceremony, marking the first time a K-pop act has won a Grammy. Songwriters delivered their acceptance speech in both English and Korean, highlighting the song’s bilingual appeal.

    Music film went to “Music for John Williams,” which means director Steven Spielberg has officially won his first Grammy. That makes him an EGOT winner – an artist with an Emmy, Grammy, Tony and Oscar.

  • Petaluma jewelry store robbed at gunpoint, 2 arrested

    (KRON) — Two people are in custody and four suspects remain at large following an armed robbery at Gold Rush Jewelers in Petaluma Saturday.

    The robbery happened around 4:46 p.m., around the time a car drove through the front of the jewelry store at 385 south McDowell Blvd., according to the Petaluma Police Department.

    “Officers responded and learned six suspects entered the business armed with hammers, pepper spray, and a firearm,” Petaluma PD said. “They began breaking the glass of the display cases and removing jewelry while one suspect held employees up at gunpoint.”

    1 dead, 1 seriously injured in East Bay rollover crash

    One of the suspects allegedly pepper sprayed a witness during the getaway. Four of the suspects drove away from the scene in a car reported stolen in Brentwood, police said. The car was later found abandoned in a nearby neighborhood. Two of the suspects ran from the robbery on foot and were later captured by police with help from witnesses and a Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department helicopter.

    The arrested suspects are 18-year-old William Clarence Butler of Pittsburg and Moshae Koron Howell of Antioch. The suspects were booked into the Sonoma County jail on charges of robbery, burglary, battery of a person, assault with a firearm, exhibiting a firearm in a threatening manner and conspiracy.

    The jewelry store employees were not injured in the robbery. The pepper-sprayed witness was treated for minor injuries.

  • The biggest moments from the 68th Grammy Awards

    An in memoriam segment that had the entire room on its feet. A famous director achieving EGOT status. And a whole lot of celebrities criticizing Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations.

    The 68th Grammy Awards on Sunday, which comedian Trevor Noah helmed for the sixth and final time, were a long (a little over 3½ hours, to be exact) but memorable event.

    Here are our biggest takeaways from music’s biggest night.

    Artists speak out against ICE

    Bad Bunny, Billie Eilish and more winners at the 2026 Grammy Awards spoke out against ICE amid heated backlash for the agency’s ongoing operations in multiple U.S. cities.

    The awards show came just over one week after the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti at the hands of Customs and Border Patrol agents and weeks after the fatal shooting of Renee Good by an ICE officer.

    Justin Bieber, Carole King, Teddy Swims, Joni Mitchell, Finneas, Billie Eilish, Samara Joy, Lachi and Kehlani were among the artists sporting “ICE OUT” pins.

    On the red carpet, artist Bon Iver said he wore a bright orange whistle on his lapel to honor “observers” in Minneapolis, who he said patrol the streets and blow their whistles when ICE is near, protecting their neighbors and communities.

    Kehlani criticized ICE on the red carpet and as she accepted her first award at the Premiere Ceremony.

    “Together we’re stronger in numbers to speak against all the injustice going on in the world right now,” she said. “So instead of letting it be just a couple few here and there, I hope everyone’s inspired to join together as a community of artists.”

    Gloria Estefan talked about the hundreds of children who “are in detention, in horrible conditions,” and encouraged viewers to stand up and vote.

    And while he was accepting his preshow award, an emotional Shaboozey thanked his immigrant mother for having worked multiple jobs to provide for him and his siblings.

    “Immigrants built this country, literally. So this is for them,” he said. “This is also for those who came to this country in search of better opportunities and to be part of a nation that promised freedom for all.”

    In her speech accepting the award for best new artist, Olivia Dean also gave a shoutout to immigrants (though she did not denounce ICE itself).

    “I just want to say I’m a granddaughter of an immigrant. I wouldn’t be here. … I’m a product of bravery, and I think those people deserve to be celebrated,” she said. “So yeah, we’re nothing without each other.”

    But perhaps the biggest statement came from Bad Bunny, who is headlining the Super Bowl next weekend. The Puerto Rican star did not tour in the U.S. for “DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS” because of immigration policies.

    “Before I say thanks to God, I gotta say: ICE Out,” he began his acceptance speech for best musica urbana album. “We’re not savage. We’re not animals. We’re not aliens. We are humans, and we are Americans.

    “The hate get more powerful with more hate. The only thing that is more powerful than hate is love,” he continued. “We need to be different. If we fight, we have to do it with love. We don’t hate them, we love our people, we love our family, and that’s the way to do it. That’s the way to do it. With love.”

    Billie Eilish, known to get political at awards shows, took after Bad Bunny and used nearly her entire acceptance speech for song of the year to call out immigration legislation.

    “No one is illegal on stolen land,” Eilish said, later encouraging the room to “keep fighting and speaking up and protesting.”

    “Our voices really do matter,” she said, “and the people matter.”

    A first for K-pop

    They’re going up, up, up, it’s their moment.

    The fictional band from Netflix’s “KPop Demon Hunters” delivered a first for the K-pop genre.

    The animated blockbuster, produced by Sony Pictures Animation and released by Netflix in June, was nominated in several categories, including the coveted song of the year.

    “Golden,” a hit song from the film, snagged a win for best song written for visual media at the Premiere Ceremony.

    “Golden,” a track from the animated film, received three Grammy nominations, including song of the year. The song from the fictional band Huntr/x (in real life, Ejae, Audrey Nuna and Rei Ami) was written by Ejae and Mark Sonnenblick.

    The film and its voice stars have been everywhere this awards season, and most recently the film snagged two Oscar noms. Last month, it won two Golden Globes, including best original song.

    Trevor Noah is back at it. The comedian hosted the 68th Annual Grammy Awards for the sixth – and final – time. During his monologue, the 41-year-old threw shade at Nicki Minaj after the rapper aligned herself with and defended President Donald Trump.

    A brand-new celebrity joins ‘EGOT’ club

    Hollywood legend Steven Spielberg just got added to the “EGOT” club.

    The accolade is for those who have won all four major awards — Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony — a feat that has been achieved by only 21 people.

    Spielberg produced the award-winning “Music by John Williams,” which won the Grammy for best music film.

    Though he was not onstage to accept the award, he was thanked by director Laurent Bouzereau, who accepted the award during the Premiere Ceremony.

    In a statement to People magazine, Spielberg thanked Grammy voters.

    “This acknowledgment is obviously deeply meaningful to me because it validates what I have known for over 50 years: John Williams’ influence on culture and music is immeasurable and his artistry and legacy is unrivaled,” he said. “I am proud to be associated with Laurent’s beautiful film.”

    AI top of mind for some artists

    Artificial intelligence has been in the backdrop of many awards shows and big Hollywood events since its prominence began exploding in recent years. Sunday night was no exception.

    Nick Waterhouse, a co-producer on Jon Batiste’s “Big Money,” accepted the award for best Americana album on Batiste’s behalf, reading a message from him onstage.

    “Jon says: Thank God real musicians and real people playing in the same room together is one of the oldest traditions in humanity and must be protected,” Waterhouse said.

    In what appeared to be a call to protect artists from AI, Waterhouse continued by calling “on [digital service providers], the Academy, corporations, the big money to protect our humanity in music right now.”

    Nate Smith, who won best alternative jazz album for “LIVE-ACTION,” also called on the Recording Academy to ensure AI is not a threat to artists.

    “This music is about playing together and human beings playing together. We are living in a time when human beings are not playing together and being featured playing together. … AI is kind of taking over, and I think it’s incumbent upon the Recording Academy and the recording industry to protect the rights of artists,” he said.

    Kendrick Lamar sets Grammy record

    Lamar became the rapper with the most Grammy wins ever. He now has 27 Grammys, breaking Jay-Z’s record of 25.

    “Hip-hop is gonna always be right here. We’re gonna be in these suits, we’re gonna be looking good, we’re gonna be having our folks with us, we’re gonna be having our culture with us,” Lamar said as he accepted his fourth Grammy of the evening. “So I appreciate y’all.”

    Lamar was the most-nominated artist at the Grammys this year, with nine nods.

    He also dominated last year’s Grammy Awards.

  • San Jose Police Warn of Burglars Hiding Surveillance Cameras Outside Residents’ Homes

    Residents in an east San Jose neighborhood have been warned about a new tactic burglars are utilizing to monitor when residents are away from home by hiding a surveillance camera on the property then later posing as landscapers or delivery drivers visiting the residence.

    As SFGate reports, a resident called the San Jose Police Department at 2:45 am Thursday reporting that people were on their property, who left before officers arrived. The resident then found a camera attached to an external power bank in their bushes, which was aimed at their home, according to San Jose police, presumably to monitor when the home was unoccupied in order to commit burglaries.

    As KRON4 reports, while patrolling the neighborhood, detectives found a second camera attached to a Wi-Fi-powered device outside a home near where the first camera was placed.

    “The suspects plant hidden surveillance devices, often posing as delivery service providers, to determine when homes are unoccupied before committing burglaries,” the police department said, per KRON4.

    Per SFGate, the police department said in a press release it’s received several complaints of suspicious devices hidden on local residents’ properties, followed by the potential burglars ringing the doorbells while posing as delivery drivers or other workers, sometimes leaving packages on the doorstep.

    Per SFGate, authorities say residents should call the police if a suspicious device is found, and not to touch it. “As a reminder, remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious activity helps keep our neighborhoods safe,” said the police department.

  • 4 suspects at large in Petaluma jewelry store robbery; 2 arrested

    Four suspects remain at large and two were arrested after an armed robbery at a Petaluma jewelry store on Saturday, police said. 

    Officers responded to Gold Rush Jewelers on North McDowell Boulevard around 4:45 p.m., learning six suspects entered the business armed with hammers, pepper spray and a gun, police said.

    The suspects broke glass display cases and took jewelry while one suspect held employees up to gunpoint, police said. 

    A person who saw the suspects enter the store drove the suspects’ unattended vehicle into the front of the store, police said, prompting the suspects to flee. 

    One suspect peppper sprayed the bystander as he tried to get away from the vehicle, police said. 

    Four suspects got into the vehicle and drove out of the shopping center while two others ran away, police said. 

    The suspect’s vehicle was found abandoned in an adjacent neighborhood, police said. It was determined that the vehicle was stolen from Brentwood. 

    People on Coronado Drive saw a person jumping fences, and that suspect was taken into custody. A second suspect was also located in a backyard and taken into custody. 

    After searching the neighborhood for about two hours, the remaining four suspects were not found. They remain at large.

    The suspects arrested were identified as 18-year-old William Butler Clarence of Pittsburgh and 18-year-old Moshae Koron Howell. They were booked for robbery, burglary, battery, assault with a firearm, exhibiting a firearm in a threatening manner and conspiracy.

    The employees were not injured. The bystander was treated at the scene and released. 

    Residents said the incident is unsettling, particularly because of the suspects’ ages.

    “I think it’s really scary these times that teenaged individuals feel that it’s okay to do that in broad daylight,” said Petaluma resident Lindsey Wert.

    Customers said they were relieved that store employees were not hurt. The company declined to comment. On Sunday, people were seen cleaning up inside the store.

    “I feel sad because it does take away your sense of security. And it makes you realize anytime, anything could happen.  But I think as a community, everybody sticks together and helps each other here,” said customer Carol Simpson.

    Authorities are reminding the public to be good witnesses and not put themselves in danger.

  • DUI driver smashes into Fairfield home: PD

    (KRON) — A car plowed into a house on the 5300 block of Fields Court in Fairfield Friday.

    A caller reported to police around 6:24 p.m. that the car was speeding on Hancock Drive before it drove through a fence and into the back of the home.

    “When personnel from Fairfield Fire and officers arrived, the vehicle was trapped under a lot of debris and there was clear structural damage to the two-story residence,” Fairfield PD said. “A child inside the residence was struck by debris and extricated from the home by members of Fairfield Fire Department, but sustained no injuries.”

    The driver, identified as 23-year-old Matthew Salagubang, was pulled from the wreck by first responders. Salagubang was taken to the hospital for treatment and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

  • 49ers hire ex-Atlanta Falcons coach Raheem Morris as defensive coordinator, sources tell ESPN

    SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers are hiring Raheem Morris as their new defensive coordinator, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Sunday.

    Morris will become the team’s fifth coordinator in as many years. He replaces Robert Saleh, who departed to become the head coach of the Tennessee Titans.

    This is the second year in a row in which the Niners had to wait out the head coaching carousel before landing their man. Last year, they waited for Saleh amidst interest from the Jacksonville Jaguars and Las Vegas Raiders.

    Morris was considered a finalist for the Arizona Cardinals head coaching job, which went to Mike LaFleur, the Los Angeles Rams’ offensive coordinator.

    Morris and 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan are close friends from previous coaching stops with Tampa Bay (2004-2005), Washington (2012) and, most recently, with the Atlanta Falcons in 2015-2016.

    The Niners bring Morris aboard after he spent the past two seasons as Atlanta’s head coach. He previously held that position in Tampa Bay from 2009 to 2011.

    This will be Morris’ third professional stint as a defensive coordinator, having done the job in Atlanta in 2020 and for the Los Angeles Rams from 2021-2023.

    Morris coordinated a Rams defense that helped win Super Bowl LVI.

    The Niners, meanwhile, are looking for some stability at the coordinator position having gone from DeMeco Ryans to Steve Wilks to Nick Sorensen to Saleh in the past four years.

    “I definitely don’t like doing this for a fifth year in a row,” Shanahan said on Jan. 21. “I really would like to go on vacation, but these D-coordinators keep making me have my family wait and get mad at me for it.”

    Despite season-ending injuries to star defensive end Nick Bosa (ACL) and linebacker Fred Warner (ankle), Saleh’s defense finished 2025 13th in points allowed and 20th in yards allowed.

    At his end of season news conference, Shanahan indicated that defensive assistant Gus Bradley was the team’s primary in-house candidate. Bradley received an interview, but when Morris didn’t get a head coaching job elsewhere, he moved to the top of the list.

    The 49ers also interviewed former Browns, Saints and Broncos defensive coordinator Joe Woods for the job.

  • Neighbors and businesses in San Francisco prepare for the Super Bowl

    Super Bowl 60 is now just one week away.

    While the game is being played at Levi’s Stadium, the NFL Super Bowl Fan Experience will kick off Tuesday in San Francisco at Moscone Center.

    There are also other big events happening all week long in the city.

    Neighbors in the area of Howard Street say they are making adjustments. Meanwhile, businesses NBC Bay Area spoke to say they’re getting ready to welcome all the football fans into the city.

    Just a few blocks from Moscone Center, neighbors are watching the transformation ahead of Super Bowl week. One neighbor is bracing himself for the traffic, and that includes securing a spot for his car, before the Super Bowl Experience opens on Tuesday.

    “I’ve been up since 6 a.m., I secure my parking for today but I’m not planning on moving my car so I’m just going to walk because to drive around or to get a parking no way,” said Cesar, who lives in San Francisco.

    While Super Bowl 60 will be played in Santa Clara, San Francisco is hosting a number of events leading up to the game. Restaurants are looking forward to the boost in business.

    “I’m very excited very excited, I think after Feb. 2 we’re going to get really busy,” said Mohammad Zughaiyer, owner of Oasis Grill.

    One of Zughaiyer’s locations is across the street from all the action.

    “I see a lot of people coming to my place and ask me for my phone numbers and the website and stuff like this, and they said I’m going to hear from them very soon big orders, catering orders yeah,” Zughaiyer said.

    The last time the Bay Area hosted the Super Bowl in 2016, the Super Bowl 50 Host Committee said the games and events surrounding it brought $240 million revenue boost to the Bay Area’s economy. More than 57% of that money was spent in San Francisco.

    “Yesterday was a scene already we just started the Super Bowl week, really excited I have, you know, all hands-on deck,” said John Konstin Jr., owner of John’s Grill.

    “Well hopefully that means great things what is means is a lot of people coming into town for the Super Bowl, individuals fans of the team and obviously corporate sponsors and those people are going to need some place to eat and hopefully they will be dining out at restaurants across the city,” said Amy Cleary with the Golden Gate Restaurant Association.

    Over at John’s Grill, they’re ready:

    “We will be the place to be this week our reservations are packed we private events, full buyouts at the restaurant,” said John Konstin Jr.

  • Sunday Streets Under Threat of Cancellation After 17 Years, Rally to Be Held at City Hall Monday

    Local advocates are taking action to prevent the cancellation of SF’s popular long-running neighborhood street festival series, Sunday Streets, due to budget cuts, urging residents to sign their petition, contact local officials, and attend a rally at City Hall Monday.

    As Streetsblog SF reports, the San Francisco Department of Public Health announced earlier in January the agency’s plan to gut the city’s popular Sunday Streets program after a 17-year partnership in order to reallocate the funds toward covering department deficits. Per Streestsblog, the funds were originally appropriated for Sunday Streets by the SF Board of Supervisors through the health department’s Equity & Promotion program.

    Per the SF Bicycle Coalition, San Francisco is a healthier and more connected city because of Sunday Streets, which launched in 2008 and often serves neighborhoods with limited access to open space community events.

    Livable City, the nonprofit that runs Sunday Streets, has created an advocacy toolkit for residents interested in pushing the city to keep the program going and find ways to stabilize it. The toolkit includes an email template for contacting officials, a petition urging SF Mayor Daniel Lurie and the Board of Supervisors to restore funding, and a guide to giving public comment at the Health Commission hearing, which is taking place  at 4 pm Monday in Room 408 at City Hall, preceded by a rally on the City Hall steps at 3 pm.

    Per Streetsblog, the Department of Public Health is moving to cut $17 million in funding from community-based organizations, and Livable City receives a mere 1.3% of those funds for Sunday Streets — $215,758 per year.

    Per Streetsblog, Sunday Streets is a hugely popular program that continually exceeds its metrics in providing the community with outlets for physical fitness and wellness each year, while offering a platform for more than 120 city and nonprofit groups to connect with the community through direct services, educational resources, and outreach.

  • 59-vehicle crash forces temporary closure of Highway 99 in Central California, CHP says

    TULARE COUNTY, Calif. — A Saturday morning crash involving nearly 60 vehicles in Central California’s Tulare County forced the temporary closure of Highway 99 in both directions at the scene, according to the California Highway Patrol.

    The CHP received several calls about the incident shortly after 8:15 a.m. Authorities say the crash happened in northbound and southbound lanes near Avenue 24, about 40 miles north of Bakersfield.

    Ten people were taken to a local hospital for injuries. Updates on their conditions were not immediately available. All others involved in the crash were transported by bus to the International Agri-Center in Tulare.

    The California Highway Patrol provides an update following a massive 59 vehicle pileup in Tulare County on Saturday morning.

    In a post on Tulare County’s official Facebook page, officials initially estimated that 150 vehicles were involved in the crash. The CHP disputed that number, saying there were 59 vehicles in the pileup.

    A crash involving nearly 60 vehicles in Central California’s Tulare County forced the closure of Highway 99 in both directions at the scene, according to the California Highway Patrol.

    CHP investigators believe fog was a factor, estimating there was between 100 to 200 feet of visibility at the time of the chain-reaction crash.

    Highway 99 fully reopened by 2:30 p.m., according to the CHP.

  • Luis Arraez and Giants agree on $12 million, 1-year contract, source says

    Free agent infielder Luis Arraez and the San Francisco Giants have agreed to a $12 million, one-year contract, according to a person with knowledge of the negotiations.

    The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Saturday night because the deal was subject to a successful physical and had not been announced.

    A three-time batting champion, Arraez led the National League in hits the past two seasons and is expected to be San Francisco’s second baseman for new manager Tony Vitello.

    The 28-year-old Arraez, a left-handed hitter, batted .292 with eight home runs, 61 RBIs, 181 hits and 11 stolen bases for the San Diego Padres last year. The three-time All-Star spent his first five major league seasons with the Minnesota Twins before they traded him to the Miami Marlins in January 2023. San Diego acquired him in May 2024.

    Earlier in the week, the Giants added center fielder Harrison Bader on a $20.5 million, two-year contract — meaning Jung Hoo Lee will now play right field.

    San Francisco has missed the playoffs in each of the past four years since winning the NL West with a franchise-record 107 victories in 2021.

  • Crowd lines up before crack of dawn for grand opening of East Bay’s newest Japanese supermarket

    EMERYVILLE, Calif. (KRON) — It’s 12:30 a.m., and Ryan Ly-Burbridge is standing outside of Tokyo Central supermarket in Emeryville. Ly-Burbridge, an Oakland resident, is the first person in line for the Japanese grocery store’s grand opening at 10 a.m.

    “We’ve been excited for the Tokyo Central opening,” Ly-Burbridge said. “Patiently waiting for over a year now for this opening. Really excited.”

    It is by far the most highly anticipated grocery store opening in the Bay Area this year.

    Yes, 2026 just started, but it’s unlikely another supermarket opening will draw this kind of Saturday morning crowd at the Bay Street Emeryville shopping center. Hundreds of people were in line that wrapped around the shopping center and its parking lot — many waiting hours to shop in the city’s only Japanese supermarket.

    Ly-Burbridge recalls his trip to Japan and fell in love with the food there. He looks forward to having Tokyo Central in his backyard and its Japanese-specific offerings that take him back to his September 2025 trip with his wife.

    That is Tokyo Central’s mission. The Japanese company said it wants to give its customers authentic flavors of Japan locally, here in the Bay Area.

    One thing that one may notice inside is the especially large section for alcoholic beverages. Tokyo Central sells a variety of hard liquor, sake, beer and other imports from Japan and other Asian countries.

    Tokyo Central offers a number of grab-and-go food options. There is also a do-it-yourself buffet — similar to what you would see at a Whole Foods. Menu options include Chicken Karaage, Chicken Teriyaki, bento boxes, sushi and poke bowls.

    Like many Asian supermarkets today, Tokyo Central also has a dedicated section for K-beauty products. Of course, the store still offered plenty of Japanese beauty and hygiene products.

    “Today’s ribbon-cutting represents more than just the opening of a new business. It represents Emeryville’s commitment to cultural diversity, economic vitality,” said Emeryville Mayor Sukhdeep Kaur. “We are excited about the energy and opportunities Tokyo Central will bring to our city. I’m confident the store will be a destination for families, food lovers and anyone eager to experience something new.”

    Tokyo Central’s grand opening drew crowds from all over the Bay Area. Fairfield resident Liezl Loanzon made the drive to stand in line starting at 5:30 a.m.

    “It’s exciting because this is one of the stores we went to in Japan,” said Loanzon, who was among the first five people in line.

    Tokyo Central is owned and operated by Pan Pacific International Holdings Corporation, which runs hundreds of grocery stores in Japan.

    The grand opening festivities continue on Sunday with several promos and specials. Hours for this weekend are from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. After that, regular store hours are from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Tokyo Central is located at 5603 Bay St. in Emeryville.

    “Free parking for Tokyo Central customers is available on the 2nd floor of Tokyo Central building,” the grocer said on its website. “Enjoy up to 1.5 hours of free 122 parking spaces when you shop at Tokyo Central.”

    Tokyo Central’s lone other Bay Area location is in Cupertino. There are more than a dozen locations in Southern California. The Emeryville opening falls in line with the recent trend of more Asian grocery store openings in the Bay Area.

    Last month, fellow Japanese grocery, Osaka Marketplace, debuted in Foster City and has served the needs of that community on the Peninsula.

  • Farabee’s short-handed goal in the 3rd period lifts the Flames to a 3-2 win over the Sharks

    Joel Farabee’s short-handed goal at 6:53 of the third period broke a tie and sent the Calgary Flames to a 3-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Saturday.

    Morgan Frost and Matvei Gridin each scored his 12th goal of the season for the Flames (22-26-6), who overcame a pair of one-goal deficits and snapped a five-game losing streak.

    Will Smith and Adam Gaudette scored for the Sharks (27-22-4), who have lost two in a row and four of seven.

    Alex Nedeljkovic stopped 39 shots for the Sharks, while Dustin Wolf made 23 saves for the Flames.

    Wolf’s best stop came against Macklin Celebrini with 21 seconds remaining when he stuck out a pad to deny the star forward after he was set up all by himself in front of the net.

    Celebrini’s three-game point streak was snapped (three goals, four assists).

    Just 15 seconds after teammate Nazem Kadri was penalized for slashing, Farabee broke a 2-all tie with Calgary’s NHL-leading eighth short-handed goal. Mikael Backlund’s slap shot missed the net, but the rebound caromed right back out front where Farbee knocked a backhand through Nedeljkovic’s pads.

    It was Calgary’s first victory since trading defenseman Rasmus Andersson. The Flames had gone 0-3-2 and scored only seven goals since the deal.

    Wolf, who is from Gilroy, California, improved to 16-2-2 against teams from his home state — the Sharks, Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks. He is 9-2-0 against San Jose.

    While recently acquired left wing Kiefer Sherwood (upper body) remains out, San Jose did welcome back left wing Philipp Kurashev (upper body, 19 games) and defenseman Shakir Mukhamadullin (undisclosed, 10 games).

    Sherwood, acquired from Vancouver on Jan. 19, hasn’t played since Jan. 10, but he’s back skating with the team.

    The 68th annual Grammy Awards will take place Sunday with a dramatically different tone than last year.

    The 2025 award show was completely reimagined and refocused to relief efforts following the devastating Los Angeles-area wildfires. In 2026, focus has been placed once again on the music, where Kendrick Lamar, Lady Gaga, Bad Bunny and more will go head-to-head.

    Comedian Trevor Noah will host for a sixth and final year and history could be made when some of the biggest names in music gather. Here’s some key things to know ahead of Sunday’s show at the Crypto.com Arena.

    How to watch the show and red carpet

    The main show will air live on CBS beginning at 8 p.m. Eastern on Feb. 1.

    The Grammys can also be watched through live TV streaming services that include CBS in their lineup, like Hulu + Live TV, YouTube TV and FuboTV.

    Paramount+ premium plan subscribers will be able to stream the Grammys live; Paramount+ essential subscribers will have on-demand access the next day.

    The premiere ceremony will take place just ahead of the Grammys’ ceremony at 3:30 p.m. Eastern, 12:30 p.m. Pacific at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. It can be streamed at the Recording Academy’s YouTube channel and on live.GRAMMY.com.

    The Associated Press will stream a four-hour red carpet show with interviews and fashion footage. It will be streamed on YouTube and APNews.com ahead of the Grammys on Sunday.

    Who’s nominated at the 2025 Grammys

    Kendrick Lamar leads the 2026 Grammy Award nominations with nine. Lady Gaga, Jack Antonoff and Canadian record producer/songwriter Cirkut follow with seven nominations each.

    Sabrina Carpenter, Bad Bunny, Leon Thomas and Serban Ghenea all boast six nominations. Andrew Watt, Clipse, Doechii, Sounwave, SZA, Turnstile and Tyler, the Creator have five each.

    Who’s attending and performing at the Grammys

    Doechii, Harry Styles, Carole King, Chappell Roan, Charli xcx, Jeff Goldblum, Karol G, Lainey Wilson, Marcello Hernández, Nikki Glaser, Q-Tip, Queen Latifah and Teyana Taylor will present at the 2026 Grammys.

    Performers include Justin Bieber, Clipse, Pharrell Williams, Sabrina Carpenter Bruno Mars, Rosé, Tyler, the Creator, Lady Gaga and all eight of the this year’s best new artist nominees: Leon Thomas, Olivia Dean, global girl group Katseye, The Marías, Addison Rae, sombr, Alex Warren and Lola Young.

    Reba McEntire, Brandy Clark and Lukas Nelson will take the stage for the in memoriam. Ms. Lauryn Hill will pay tribute to D’Angelo and Roberta Flack. Post Malone, Andrew Watt, Chad Smith, Duff McKagan and Slash will honor Ozzy Osbourne.
