  • Coast Guard suspends search for 2 missing surfers near Santa Cruz lighthouse

The U.S. Coast Guard suspended a search Saturday morning for two surfers who went missing in waters off Santa Cruz Friday evening.

The two were reported in distress at about 6:30 p.m., about 200 yards offshore from Lighthouse Point.

A Coast Guard crew aboard a 47-foot lifeboat from Monterey was dispatched to search the area, along with a Coast Guard helicopter crew from San Francisco.

After hours of unsuccessful searching, those two units were relieved at about 1 a.m. by another Coast Guard ship, a 225-foot cutter known as the Alder.

The Santa Cruz Fire Department and Civil Air Patrol also participated in the unsuccessful search, which was stopped at about 8 a.m. Sunday after no sign of the surfers was found.

About 90 miles was searched for over 10 hours. Water temperatures were about 54 degrees with swells of about 7-9 feet, according to the Coast Guard.

Michael Zapawa, a search and rescue mission coordinator for U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Francisco, said it was never easy to call an end to a search.

“The decision to suspend a search weighs heavily on all crews involved,” Zapawa said in a statement. “That decision is based on careful evaluation of all available information, including extensive search efforts, environmental conditions, and survivability assessments.”

  • Super Bowl crowds boost Bay Area businesses, but some feel left out

Super Bowl festivities drew a huge crowd in the South Bay on Friday night with the Big Game Block Party with Kehlani. While the big game will be played at Levi’s Stadium, some businesses in the South Bay say they’re only getting a small slice of the economic pie.

Nick Nestingen and his friends flew down from Seattle to watch their Seahawks play in Super Bowl 60. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but a costly one.

“It’s a lifelong dream to do this,” Nestigen said. “I remember earlier this year thinking about how I wanted to watch the Seahawks play in the Super Bowl. This was before they were looking as good as they were. I was like ya, maybe in ten years. For it to happen this year is amazing.”

Nestingen says he got a slight deal on the tickets, but he’s doing what he can to save a few dollars here and there.

“We’re still paying $4,000 for our seats,” he said. “Then I have relatives in the area, so I got free lodging. Then we have some friends who are putting us up for the weekend of the Super Bowl so we got to save a lot of money.”

But whether these fans are from out of town or from the Bay Area, they’re spending money. Something Abram Chandler with 6th Street Burgers has been looking forward to. He says Fridays are typically busy but nothing like this.

“Our Fridays are really good but possibly double what’s going on,” Chandler said.

This is a big week for many Bay Area businesses hoping to cash in on the Super Bowl crowd. Chandler just wishes there were more big game events in the South Bay.

“From looking at all the maps and events going on in San Francisco, I feel like there are 20 to 30 different things happening in a day, “Chandler said. “With all the jets flying in and all the athletes. We’re not getting too much of that in San Jose. So, I would say give us half of that at least.”

Zaileen Janmohamed, the CEO of the Bay Area Host Committee, was on the red carpet in San Francisco Thursday night. She talked about the planning that went into making sure the entire region scored big this week.

“It’s something that we were really intentional about early on to make sure that the entirety of the Bay was included,” Janmohamed said. “It’s not difficult but it’s something that has to be coordinated really well.”

The Super Bowl is expected to bring in hundreds of millions of dollars to the Bay Area. Patriots fan Skyler Winkel says he’s enjoying all the festivities, but going to the actual game is not an option.

“Nose bleeds are like $7000,” Winkel said. “It’s out of my range even though it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It’s too much, though.”

Fans say no matter who wins or loses, this experience is worth every penny. It would just be a little sweeter if their team wins.

“I can’t wait to take a picture with my Seahawks jersey with the Seahawks logo painted on the field and just wave and say thanks for hosting,” Nestingen said.

  • From the streets to the Puppy Bowl, a Bay Area dog finds a new home

Just a few months ago, Foggy — a small mixed-breed dog — was living on the streets of Fresno. She had no home, no plan and, seemingly, no clear future. Then someone noticed her.

That moment changed everything, not with a trip to the Super Bowl, but with an invitation to a much smaller field that draws a very big audience. It’s called the Puppy Bowl.

Now in its 22nd year, the Puppy Bowl has become one of Super Bowl Sunday’s most beloved traditions, pairing playful competition with a serious mission: promoting the adoption of shelter dogs.

This year, the San Francisco SPCA was selected to send one of its dogs to compete, and Foggy quickly stood out.

“She’s extremely fast,” said Robert Lightner, the director of adoptions at the San Francisco SPCA. “She runs quite a bit.”

The Puppy Bowl is designed as a high-stakes game with a bigger purpose, putting rescue dogs in front of millions of viewers and encouraging adoptions nationwide.

While there are teams, rivalries and even championships on the line, Lightner says the real goal goes far beyond the scoreboard.

Dan Schachner has served as the Puppy Bowl’s referee for the past 15 years or, as he likes to put it, 105 in dog years.

“The greatest thing about the Puppy Bowl is that we have a 100% adoption rate,” he said.

This year’s matchup is shaping up to be a close one. Longtime rivals Team Ruff and Team Fluff will face off once again, with Team Fluff currently holding a narrow championship lead, six titles to five.

And while the event is undeniably cute, its reach is anything but small.

Nearly 13 million people tuned in to the Puppy Bowl last year, according to Nielsen ratings, exposure that can make a real difference for shelters like the San Francisco SPCA.

That kind of national spotlight often translates into increased interest from potential adopters.

The shelter is now preparing its dogs for adoption, bracing for what staff describe as a post-Puppy Bowl bump.

Lightner says dogs like Dior, an impossibly cute recent arrival from Tulare County, tend to benefit from the surge in attention.

“I’m confident there will be an adopter lining up for her very soon,” he said.

As for Foggy, her story already has a happy ending. She was ultimately adopted by Lightner and his family themselves, proof that even an underdog can become an MVP, a Most Valuable Pup.

The Puppy Bowl airs Sunday at 11 a.m. Pacific on Animal Planet and affiliated networks.

  • San Francisco’s historic Castro Theater reopens with ‘Priscilla Queen of the Desert’ screening

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — The historic Castro Theater reopened Friday following a $41 million renovation project. The venue, which has served as a landmark movie palace for a century, will now showcase both film and live musical performances.

The several-year renovation was designed to make the theater viable for another 100 years. The project balanced the restoration of historic architectural elements with the installation of modern technology and flexible infrastructure to support a wider variety of events.

The 100-year-old movie palace underwent a comprehensive restoration of its interior features. Visitors will find the original artwork, murals, proscenium and chandelier have been cleaned and preserved. The project also included the installation of the world’s largest digital organ.

To accommodate the shift toward live music, the theater now features brand new seating. These seats are designed to be removable, allowing the venue to create standing room for musical performances and other live events.

David Perry of Another Planet Entertainment explained that the changes were necessary for the theater’s long-term survival. He noted that the traditional model of relying solely on film screenings is no longer viable for a theater of this size.

“People don’t go to the movies like they used to,” Perry said. “So the idea of a 1400 seat venue only supporting itself on film, it’s just untenable. So the fact that we can now book concerts, other events, even special events, I’m hoping people come and do weddings and birthdays here. This makes this space not only as important as it always was, culturally, but self-sustaining financially.”

Friday marks the first public event at the venue in more than two years. The reopening features a screening of the film “Priscilla Queen of the Desert,” with proceeds benefiting the Castro Community Benefit District.

Singer Sam Smith is scheduled to begin a 20-night residency at the Castro Theater starting Tuesday.

  • Kehlani headlines pre-Super Bowl San Jose block party featuring Bay Area artists

Super Bowl LX weekend has arrived in the Bay Area, including in San Jose, where the city is kicking off the weekend with some major performances.

“The Big Game Weekend Block Party” on Friday night was headlined by Oakland R&B artist Kehlani, who is fresh off her first two Grammy wins. The opening acts that preceded her included many Bay Area DJs, singers, musicians, and rappers.

Salena Nguyen, who is known as ‘Salenie’ when she DJs, performed alongside Geo, a Bay Area harpist. The two have been collaborating recently and also plan to perform on Sunday at the Super Bowl Game Day experience at Levi’s Stadium.

“I think the culture that is brewing and has been here forever is having a surge right now,” Nguyen said of Bay Area music culture.

“I’m getting chills as we say this, there’s like a surge of energy and something is happening, I can’t explain it,” she continued.

Artist Fijiana, who grew up in Richmond, also performed at the block party.

She was thrilled to be included in this show.

“I was like, ‘Of course!’ This is a dream, this is the biggest crowd I’ve ever performed for,” she said.

For the people visiting the Bay Area from out-of-town this weekend, Fijiana said, “I just hope that they really take in Bay Culture, that we are so diverse, especially in the climate of this country right now.”

Fijiana closed out her set with the song ‘Welcome to the Bay,’which she says is her ode to the Bay Area.

All of the people attending the show who spoke with NBC Bay Area were Bay Area residents, excited to see some local talent. Many showed up specifically to watch Kehlani perform.

“I’ve been a fan of Kehlani’s since she first started off,” explained Vinny Maxwell of Pittsburg, who didn’t want to miss this chance to see the star.

Organizers said around 8,000 attendees were expected at this show.

San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan noted that this level of activity wasn’t happening in downtown San Jose when the Super Bowl came to Santa Clara 10 years ago. He said the activity downtown from events like this is very welcome.

“This is just exactly what we were hoping for, people coming downtown, rediscovering their downtown,” Mahan said.

Another block party is scheduled for Saturday in downtown San Jose, featuring DJ Dom Dolla.

  • All Three Suspects Plead Guilty in 2021 Murder of Ex-Cop and KRON4 Security Guard Kevin Nishita

The three men accused in the killing of security guard Kevin Nishita while he was on the job and protecting a KRON4 news crew have all pleaded guilty, though only the one who pulled the trigger is being charged with murder.

A few years back when crime was much worse in the Bay Area and every city seemed to hate its District Attorney, one of the many killings that galvanized public sentiment against then-Alameda County DA Pamela Price was the 2021 daylight murder of security guard Kevin Nishita. Nishita was a retired Colma and San Jose police officer who was providing security for a KRON4 news team that was doing a segment on a masked mob breaking into an Oakland clothing store. Nishita was shot in the chest when a trio of suspects tried to steal the news crew’s camera equipment.

The case was originally charged by Price’s predecessor Nancy O’Malley, but Price was seen to have been botching the prosecution when she took office and then concluded that a different alleged gang member was the one who pulled the trigger. And then she declined to file sentencing enhancements that would have lengthened the three suspects’ prison sentences.

But now, more than four years after the killing, it appears all three will get plenty long prison sentences. KTVU reports that all three suspects have pleaded guilty to the crime, though only the man who pulled the trigger, Laron Gilbert, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder. Gilbert is expected to be sentenced to 30 years to life.

Gilbert, you may recall, fled to Kansas City and was not arrested and extradited back until 2024. Two other suspects, Sahdihia Mitchell and Hershel Hale, only pleaded no contest to lesser charges of robbery. Their potential sentences are less clear.

The murder trial would have started within about three weeks.

  • Bar temporarily raises entry age to 25 due to surge in fake IDs, including a ‘Founding Father’

PHILADELPHIA — A longtime Philadelphia bar has temporarily raised its entry age to 25 and older after an apparent surge in college-age patrons and increasingly sophisticated fake IDs.

Dirty Frank’s co-owner Jody Sweitzer said she believed social media contributed to a wave of younger crowds showing up at the Center City bar, prompting the staff to become more vigilant.

But she said the tipping point came when a 24-year-old “Founding Father” attempted to get in. The fake Pennsylvania ID featured a photo of Ben Franklin, listed his age as 24, and gave the Liberty Bell as his address.

Philadelphia bar Dirty Frank’s has temporarily raised entry age to 25 due to surge in fake IDs, including one featuring a photo Founding Father Ben Franklin.

Sweitzer said that was when she decided the bar had to act, and two weeks ago, Dirty Frank’s implemented a temporary rule requiring patrons to be at least 25 to enter.

“Thank you to whoever brought this in. We confiscated it, obviously, and that’s the day I’m like, ‘We’re done,’” Sweitzer said, holding up the confiscated fake ID.

She said the bar had seen an influx of younger crowds arriving in large groups.

“I guess it was with the ChatGPT, and TikTok and everything, so we started getting swarms of kids, 20 at a time, 30 at a time, and it was so odd,” she said. “Everybody was scanning, the UV lights were working, so all the holograms were correct, but it just seemed really off,” she added.

Sweitzer said the IDs were still scanning as valid and passing security measures but other behavioral concerns raised alarms, including vaping inside, some patrons bringing their own drinks, and instances of disrespectful conduct.

The Ben Franklin incident, she said, underscored the need for immediate action.

“I have to preserve the bar, I have to preserve my license,” she said.

Regular customers said they’d noticed changes in the atmosphere.

“They don’t know how to drink. They drink way too much. They throw up on the floor, they yell, they scream,” said Jean Merritt of South Philadelphia.

Merritt went on to say, “I was not surprised that the kids are trying to play tricks, but I am so glad they changed the age.”

Some patrons said they understand the decision, even if it temporarily excludes people between 21 and 24.

“I kinda feel sorry for them, but if you can’t behave, you gotta go. Of course I’d be angry if I was 21-24 and couldn’t get in here, but there are other places to go to,” said Al Koren of West Powelton.

Sweitzer said she is now looking for more advanced equipment capable of better detecting fraudulent IDs. She said the age rule will remain in place until better technology is secured.

“I will purchase it, and we’ll go back to 21 and over. Until I have a scanner that is capable of determining whether it’s a fake ID or not, that’s just how it is,” she said.

Sweitzer said she is testing new equipment, though she does not yet know when the bar might return to a 21-and-over policy.

  • Road closures in Santa Clara, San Francisco and San Jose as Super Bowl LX nears

As Super Bowl LX between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots approaches, multiple road closures are in place near Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara and for game-related events in San Francisco and San Jose.

    In San Francisco

Closures are in effect near Moscone Center, where the Super Bowl experience is taking place. Howard Street between 3rd and 4th streets is closed 24 hours. Meanwhile Mission Street between 3rd and 5th streets and 4th Street between Market and Folsom streets are closed daily from 7 a.m. through 11 p.m.

The closures around Moscone Center are in effect through Tuesday.

Other closures in San Francisco include 19th Street between 3rd and Tennessee Streets in the city’s Dogpatch neighborhood for the NFL Culture Club at the Pearl through Saturday. Meanwhile, closures and detours are in place near the Palace of Fine Arts for the NFL Honors on Thursday night and the Studio 60 concerts on Friday and Saturday nights.

Near City Hall, Grove Street in front of the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium is closed through Monday due to a series of concerts at the venue. Additional closures on Grove next to City Hall, along with Polk Street between McAllister and Hayes streets are in place on Saturday due to a private event.

Other street closures are planned near Grace Cathedral for an event on Friday and the Taste of the NFL at The Hibernia at Jones and McAllister streets on Saturday.

    In San Jose

San Carlos Street between Almaden Boulevard and Market Street in downtown will be closed in both directions through Monday. Lane closures between San Carlos and San Salvador streets are also in place. Officials said access to the Hilton Hotel and the San Jose McEnery Convention Center will be maintained.

Outside of downtown, Humboldt Street will be closed between South 7th and South 10th street for 2-4 hours through Saturday, as the Seahawks conduct practice at San Jose State University’s fields.

In Santa Clara / Levi’s Stadium

Tasman Drive between Calle Del Sol and Great America Parkway has been closed since Jan. 28. The road, which passes in front of the stadium, will be closed through Friday, Feb. 13.

Officials have announced multiple detours around the closure. For local traffic, drivers and cyclists can bypass the closure by using Great America Way, Great America Parkway, Lafayette Street, Calle De Luna and Calle Del Sol.

A regional detour is also in place, using Highways 101, 237, Montague Expressway, Lawrence Expressway and North 1st Street.

For pedestrians, sidewalk access on Tasman Drive will also be closed around the stadium. Officials suggested taking VTA Light Rail between the Great America and Lick Mill stations to get around the closure, as other pedestrian detours are significantly longer.

The San Tomas Aquino Creek Trail in front of the stadium is also closed to pedestrians and cyclists, which remains in effect through Tuesday.

On Sunday, Great America Parkway between Patrick Henry Drive and Bunker Hill Lane will also be closed.

Meanwhile, the closure on Tasman Drive on game day will be expanded to Old Ironsides Drive and Lick Mill Boulevard. Ahead of the game, pedestrian access on Tasman between Convention Center and Calle Del Sol will be limited to credentialed staff and Super Bowl ticketholders.

Additional information about the closures can be found on the Bay Area Host Committee website.

Last season, McCaffrey appeared in just four games after being sidelined by Achilles tendinitis and, after a brief comeback, a posterior cruciate ligament injury.

“Just to be able to come back, stay healthy and contribute every week, it means everything,” McCaffrey said during his acceptance speech. “This game isn’t easy, and bouncing back from what I went through last year makes this award really special.”

McCaffrey was also a finalist for Most Valuable Player and Offensive Player of the Year for 2025. On Wednesday, McCaffrey was also honored with the USAA 2025 Salute to Service Award, which recognizes the “exceptional efforts by members of the NFL family to honor and support the military community.” McCaffrey’s father, Ed McCaffrey, presented him with the award on Thursday.

In 2023, McCaffrey was named the AP Offensive Player of the Year after leading the league in yards from scrimmage with 2,023 and totaling 21 touchdowns. His dominant season helped propel the 49ers to Super Bowl LVIII and cemented his standing as one of the league’s premier dual-threat backs.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan praised McCaffrey’s perseverance, calling his 2025 season “one of the most impressive individual efforts I’ve ever seen” and crediting him with helping keep San Francisco competitive through adversity.

McCaffrey was relied upon more than ever as the San Francisco powered through a litany of injuries to top players to finish the season 12-5, beating the Philadelphia Eagles in the wild-card round before bowing out in the divisional round.

  • Jury deadlocked in Stanford felony vandalism trial

Facing a possible mistrial, jurors in the felony vandalism case against five Stanford activists appeared deadlocked Thursday on a conspiracy charge, bringing prosecutors and defense attorneys back to court in one of the most serious prosecutions of pro-Palestinian supporters in the country.

Attorneys were first notified of the deadlock Wednesday afternoon and asked to appear in court Thursday for a status update. Judge Hanley Chew said the jury was split 8–4 on the conspiracy charge, though he did not disclose whether they favored conviction or acquittal. Chew instructed jurors to continue deliberating.

It remained unclear whether the split applied to one, some or all of the defendants. Although the five activists are being tried individually, jurors could reach the same outcome for all or decide differently for each.

As of press time, the jury had not returned a verdict on the conspiracy charge.

On Thursday afternoon, jurors also had begun deliberating on the felony vandalism charge, which carries a potential prison sentence of up to three years and possible restitution. If convicted on both charges, their sentences would run concurrently.

A continued deadlock on the conspiracy or vandalism charges, or both, could result in a total or partial mistrial, leaving the prosecution free to retry the case.

The trial centers on five of the 13 individuals initially arrested in connection with damage to Stanford’s executive offices during a June 2024 protest urging the university to divest from Israel-linked companies.

The five — German Gonzalez, Maya Burke, Taylor McCann, Hunter Taylor Black and Amy Zhai — are all Stanford students or alumni. The others initially arrested either accepted plea deals or were granted diversion programs.

The case stands out from other campus protests nationwide, where similar charges have largely been dropped.

Charges against most protesters arrested during a 2024 demonstration at Columbia University were dismissed, felony cases involving University of Michigan protesters were later dropped, and after arrests at a UCLA Gaza encampment, the Los Angeles city attorney declined to file criminal charges, though many students faced campus discipline.

At the trial, Santa Clara County Deputy District Attorney Rob Baker urged jurors to set aside politics, while defense attorneys framed the case as protected expression and argued there was insufficient evidence of intent to damage the buildings.

“Free speech is irrelevant to this case,” Baker said. “You don’t get to use free speech to commit crimes.”

Baker portrayed the defendants as a highly organized student group that planned the action in advance, stayed inside the building “as leverage” to push the university on divestment, and vandalized the office.

According to prosecutors, demonstrators caused more than $300,000 in damage to Building 10 by breaking a window to gain entry. Security footage shown at trial was presented by Baker, who pointed out that the defendants covered cameras with various materials and stacked bulky objects and furniture to block doors.
