Indie folk project No-No Boy is the product of Vietnamese and Italian American songwriter and scholar Julian Saporiti, who uses his Ph.D. in Asian American history to discuss race and immigration through song. On his latest Smithsonian Folkways-released album, Empire Electric, Saporiti juxtaposes “true stories of struggle from throughout Asia and its diaspora with [his] own reckoning with intergenerational trauma.” Further juxtapositions happen on a sonic level with banjos blended with kotos (a Japanese half-tube zither) and lap-steels played beside guzhengs (a Chinese plucked zither). The result is delightfully listenable with glittering strings and lush natural soundscapes. He will support the album after an opening set from folk-pop soloist Jacob Miller. AV

New German Cinema pioneer Wim Wenders, who directed Wings of Desire and a mysterious terrain of canyons and neon in Paris, Texas, is known for his deliciously “slow” cinema and emphasis on desolation. Interestingly, this film (which was shortlisted for Best International Feature at this year’s Oscars) feels a little more lighthearted, but I suspect that I will still come away feeling somehow devastated. Today, it’s a 54-ton tapestry and a living symbol of a lost generation. “As we have recently experienced, science communication, information sharing, and awareness building are crucial in combating pandemics,” says OMSI in this exhibit’s promotional materials. Although he was a brilliant artist and social justice writer in the Pacific Northwest region, you might not have heard of Bob Shimabukuro. You can change that at Craft, Community, and Care: The Art and Legacy of Bob Shimabukuro, which centers the life of the Okinawan American activist and creative. He designed the beloved, now-shuttered sake bar Tanuki, but when Shimabukuro wasn’t woodworking and building furniture, he was serving as an editor and columnist for the Pacific Citizen and the International Examiner in Seattle, and was “instrumental” in the Pacific Northwestâs Japanese American Redress movement. If you caught Kenji Ide’s first Portland exhibition (A Poem of Perception at the Portland Japanese Garden) back in 2022, you’re in luckâthe Japanese artist will return to the city to showcase new wood and found object sculptures that “theatrically weave a narrative based on both the artistâs imagined and real-life experiences.” American Friend takes its title from the ’77 Wim Wenders film, which Ide had heard of growing up in Japan, but never seen, only imagining what the film might be about. Paralleling his experience of creating an alternate storyline for an unseen film, Ide’s sculptures create space for the viewer to project their own narratives within the frameworks of puzzles, built environments, and poetic abstractions. The result is a “stylized landscape” that’s both meditative and brain-tickling. LC

In Pace Taylor’s 2022 Nationale exhibition Breathe when you need to, the painter developed a warm-hued dialogue with the surrealist gender-nonconforming artist Claude Cahun, exploring the mask as an identity-driven self-preservation tool and domestic spaces as sites for unmasking. Now, in Before the Doors Open, Taylor draws from references to Joan Didion(!) and Shirley Jackson(!!!), reckoning with “self-imposed isolation, agoraphobia, and their cyclical impact on the creative process.” The series of framed paintings and smaller watercolors is lush and smoothâprevious fans of Taylor’s work won’t be disappointed. Jessica Jackson Hutchins’s tactile works transform everyday objects into art forms that are both intimately familiar and reverently heightened, and her ambitious, raw, playful style, which runs the gamut from massive sculptural installations to clothing pieces, is easily recognizable. The artist often employs castoff household objects to create her earth-toned, figurative, and vessel-like forms. Her process has expanded since 2016 to include collage-like window pieces in fused glass, and in Ruined Windows, Adams and Ollman showcases glass sculptures created in collaboration with painter Marley Freeman. The exhibition’s pièce de résistance is Presence, a 2017 sculpture that blends fused glass with ceramics to create a “rich assemblage of texture, color, light and imagery.” LC

In last year’s Pathways at Seattle’s Winston Wächter Fine Art, Joe Rudko focused on “hyper-specific abstraction” through found photo collages that created curious networks of memory. In Scrapbook, the Washington-based artist continues to pull at the threads of collective memory through Bauhaus-influenced photo collages and sculptures that reference textiles, mosaics, and paintings. I’m intrigued by Rudko’s use of found photographs collected from shops, which he layers with scraps of his personal ephemera. LC

Washington is among the hardest hit states when it comes to the fentanyl crisis
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — As leaders work to tackle the fentanyl crisis in Southwest Washington, officials met Friday to address the impact of fentanyl and overdose deaths in Cowlitz County. According to the CDC, Washington had the single-highest increase of reported drug overdose deaths among the states from August 2022-August 2023.
“I just turned 39. I’ve been an addict since I was 9 years old. I started with marijuana and it went to meth when I was 13. By the time I was 15, I was doing heroin,” John Nash, a recovering addict, said. “Six years ago, it went from heroin to fentanyl because of the availability and the thing with fentanyl is it does exactly what it was made to do.”
Nash’s story is just one of many highlighting the devastation of the drug crisis, especially as fentanyl sweeps the country.
“You were either heroin or meth, not both. And now we’re just seeing that everyone is doing fentanyl. There’s no distinction anymore,” Cowlitz Co. Corrections Director Marin Fox said. “We’re just literally trying to keep people alive and it’s harder than it’s ever been.”
On Friday, U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell, who serves Washington state, heard from officials and community members who deal directly with the fentanyl crisis.
“As one of the most impacted states, we need to do everything we can,” Sen. Cantwell said.
Cantwell is currently working on efforts in Washington D.C. through the U.S. Senate, like the FEND Off Fentanyl Act.
“This is a really important piece of legislation because it helps us fight the actual drug cartels that are moving so much product into our country,” Cantwell said. “We have to disrupt the illicit flow of fentanyl in our country. We have to.”
But as some shared in Friday’s roundtable, fentanyl is also deeply rooted in communities across Washington state, much of it seen by first responders.
“Just under 3% of all overdoses in the state happened in the City of Longview in 2023, despite the fact that the City of Longview represents less than a half of 1% of the population,” Longview Fire Dept. Battalion Chief Eric Koreis said. “It’s very disproportionate here.”
It’s also felt by those working directly in the treatment field, as they urge elected officials like the senator to help fund and streamline solutions. Frank Morrison, CEO of CORE Health, lost his daughter to an overdose in August. Now, he’s working to help others who are struggling, like operating treatment shelters for everyone from kids to entire families.
“The average age they started was 11 years old. 80% of their family members used and their first substance was cannabis,” Morrison said while discussing some of the teens currently in treatment. “It’s been a long-standing generational thing where families and use is connected.”
As for Nash, these kinds of solutions have made a difference. He says he hadn’t had 30 days of sobriety at any point in his life since the age of 9, which makes this Saturday extra special.
“I celebrate a year clean tomorrow,” Nash told the room.
The FEND Off Fentanyl Act passed the U.S. Senate earlier this week. It’s now expected to head to the U.S. House for a vote.

“I think it’s fucked up to live in America, where they stole you from your homeland then sell your ancestry back to you. Like yeah, you know for $100 I’ll show you where we stole you from!” – DL Hughley, Contrarian (2018).
“We’re going to do a family crest exploration project,” Ms. Womack shared with her small group of 7th graders. “Family crest, what the hell is that?” I thought to myself as I 360’d my head to my peers, mostly White, who did not seem nearly as thrown by the assignment as I was. Ms. Womack went on to explain that we’d be tracing our family history as far back as we could to create an origin story around how our families got to America. I went to an elite private school in Portland’s West Hills, and in that moment, felt I had been volleyed from my desk into the wilderness of every unknown I’d ever had about Africa.
Now, everything can’t be culturally responsive, but this was a particularly White-ass premise. The words “family crest” evoked visions of the Crusades to me, more than they did the Savannahs.
Nonetheless, I pieced together what I could of my lineage: mostly of my mom’s side which I could trace back to my great-grandmother Annie Jennings, who at that time was still living. I spattered ink and photos of my bloodline into something that resembled a crest, complete with a photo of my uncle Brian impersonating Michael Jackson in a high school talent show and a flick I ripped from Google of Florence Ballard of The Supremes, who family legend claims as one of our own.
I don’t remember the grade I got. What I do remember today, nearly 20 years later is the feeling that it left me with—a cross-stitch of loss and the unknown.
My partner has heard me grapple with these paradoxes throughout the years. A descendant of weavings between Europe, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean, Zoe’s hereditary legacy is not marred by questions of the global slave trade. That said, she is a down-ass partner. Being such in 2021, responding to my questions, she purchased me a life-altering DNA test to help me finally find some answers.
I got my kit in the mail from Ancestry.com, offered libations into a tube and hurriedly shipped my genes off into the void of their processing lab and waited.
A couple weeks later, the results were in. When you log onto the site it might as well say: “you’ve got cousins.” Lots and lots of cousins. Among the cousins, I discovered even more memorabilia: old family photos, headstones, and distant infidelities—tripping over stones that some probably wish had stayed unturned. I mean, I even found a brother on there. Yes, a brother. Shoutout to my dad for not keeping track of his shit.
But beyond the soap opera, I found the pieces that began to fill in some of those long-held places of the unknown with broad strokes of red, black, and green.
More than 90 percent of my DNA traced to West Africa: Nigeria. Congo. Mali. Benin. Togo.
But in this discovery lay more questions, namely in Samuel J. Ballard. A sharecropper from Panola County, Texas, an area so driven by the free-labor during whatever “again” time Trump is always talking about, its name was literally derived from the Iroquois word for cotton. Samuel, I learned, was my maternal great-great grandfather.
I soaked up every record I could find on him—granted there wasn’t much. He lived from 1865-1918. The U.S. Census is constitutionally mandated to count every American each decade. Problem is many of us were property the decade my grandfather was born—the Emancipation Proclamation didn’t materialize until three years after 1860, and even then, many were still held in bondage for years to come. When the Census was published that year, 90 percent of Black America was enslaved; assets and liabilities. Essentially, this means for Black America today, when trying to understand your lineage, the decade of 1860 is the wall that keeps wall-ing.

In this world, truly anything is for sale—even things that’ve been stolen from you. In a world not too distant, stolen people were for sale too.

Per Ta-Nehisi Coates’ landmark essay The Case for Reparations, he explained this dichotomy as a “robbery,” writing, “At the onset of the civil war, our stolen bodies were worth four billion dollars, more than all of American industry, all of American railroads, workshops and factories combined, and the prime product rendered by our stolen bodies—cotton.”
Where else was something valued at around $4 billion dollars?
For cotton and other crops: severed were husbands and wives, bachelors and bachelorettes, brothers and sisters, cousins and play cousins, scientists and engineers, chefs and athletes, artists and jesters, philosophers and pedestrians, possibilities and possibilities, for decades, then centuries.
Today this sick game of Monopoly has morphed from typecasting Black Americans as its cash-crop of choice, to “this is Sparta-ing!” us right into the pits of its proverbial wealth gap decade-after-decade.
As a company founded in 1997, Ancestry.com is not responsible for the depths of this country’s ills. But a company that profits in large part on history’s unknowns, should be more concerned with the gains it makes on the back of a horrific legacy that continues to plague descendants of the TransAtlantic slave trade. Particularly when there’s a well-documented wall for thousands of its users because of this history.
It starts to feel like knocking on the door of your old family home that was taken through eminent domain, and the only way to get through the front door is paying the de-facto concierge a fee to walk through it like a faux-museum of your life with all your family pictures, walls, and possessions in the basement.

During this year’s short legislative session, Oregon lawmakers are considering a bill to end the biannual clock change and establish a permanent standard time.
SALEM, Ore. — In less than a month, a majority of Americans will lose an hour of sleep as we shift to daylight saving time. But for how much longer?
During this year’s short legislative session, Oregon lawmakers are considering a bill to end the biannual clock change and establish a permanent standard time.
This is the newest approach to stop the practice, and could signal a sea change from where previous efforts ended up.
Back in 2019, both Oregon and Washington passed bills to make daylight saving time permanent. However, the bill also required California to sign on before making the switch, and lawmakers there have been sitting on the issue with no progress.
States need approval from either Congress or the Department of Transportation to make that kind of time change, and the idea was for the three states to approach the federal government as a unified bloc.
But without California, it’s been stalled.
The time change impasse has held for years. But earlier this month, lawmakers introduced Oregon Senate Bill 1548, which would make standard time permanent instead of daylight saving, bypassing the need for federal approval.
But this measure is not without opposition. One University of Washington professor, Steven Calandrillo, said lawmakers should focus again on making daylight saving time permanent because of safety concerns surrounding when the sun sets.

“That evening rush hour kills three times as many people as the morning rush hour because there’s more people on the road,” he said. “There are more kids enjoying outdoor unsupervised play, there is more alcohol in people’s bloodstreams, people are rushing to get home. By pushing daylight into the evening hours, we can actually dramatically reduce the number of fatalities on roads.”
A majority of testimonial statements sent into the legislature wrote in support permanent standard time.
Jay Pea, the president of Save Standard Time, claims the 2019 push for permanent daylight saving time was based off misinterpreted evidence and that standard time is what is actually supported by sleep experts.
“It fairly balances light across the morning and the evening to fit all lifestyles, and it’s supported by history as the most sustainable way — as in the most lasting popularity for ending clock change,” Pea said.
“(Permanent standard time is) shown by science to be the healthiest and safest way for commuters, for people who need to work outdoors like farmers or construction, for children learning in school and for productivity in the workplace,” he continued. “This is the wide consensus of dozens of nonprofits. There might be one or few detractors who might pick out one or two studies, but really, there are hundreds of studies showing that permanent standard time is the better way to go.”
SB 1548 is currently in committee. Lawmakers are scheduled to hold a work session over this bill on Thursday.

(Associated Press) – The Pac-12 is parting ways with Commissioner George Kliavkoff after the former MGM executive oversaw the demise of the once-powerful league during a wave of conference realignment last year.
The Pac-12 Board of Directors announced the move Friday in a two-sentence news release, saying the conference and Kliavkoff “mutually agreed to part ways, effective February 29, 2024.”
“More details about new leadership of the Pac-12 will be announced next week,” the release said.
Kliavkoff was a surprising and unconventional hiring in the spring of 2021 when he was picked to succeed Larry Scott. Kliavkoff had been the president of sports and entertainment for MGM Resorts International in Las Vegas since 2018.
He was tasked with rebranding and boosting a conference that had taken a reputational hit under Scott’s leadership, especially in football. He leaned into being a disruptor and outsider, slowing down the process of College Football Playoff expansion after it was revealed the Southeastern Conference planned to pull Texas and Oklahoma from the Big 12 in 2021.
But in 2022, USC and UCLA announced plans to leave the Pac-12 for the Big Ten, a move that turned out to be the beginning of the end of the league as a Power Five conference.
Kliavkoff was unable to land the conference a new media rights deal that remaining members believed would keep them competitive with Power Five conference peers and the Pac-12 had eight more schools depart over the course of about a month and a half late last summer.
The Pac-12 went on to have its best football season in years with Washington breaking the conference’s six-year College Football Playoff drought and reaching the national championship game.
Washington State and Oregon State are the only remaining long-term members of the Pac-12, and currently the only members of the conference’s board of directors.
The Pacific Northwest schools plan to keep the conference up and running with only two schools for at least another year, or maybe two, as they try to rebuild the league.
But they will do so without Kliavkoff.

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Authorities have identified the man killed in a car crash in North Portland on the morning of Jan. 24.
Officers found Pedro Sanchez-Machic, 41, while responding to a single-vehicle crash on North Rosa Parks Way in the Arbor Lodge neighborhood just after 4:30 a.m.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.

NEW YORK (AP) — A New York judge ruled Friday against Donald Trump, imposing a $364 million penalty over what the judge ruled was a yearslong scheme to dupe banks and others with financial statements that inflated the former president’s wealth.
Trump also was barred from serving as an officer or director of any New York corporation for three years.
Judge Arthur Engoron issued his decision after a 2½-month trial that saw the Republican presidential front-runner bristling under oath that he was the victim of a rigged legal system.
The stiff penalty was a victory for New York Attorney General Letitia James, a Democrat, who sued Trump over what she said was not just harmless bragging but years of deceptive practices as he built the multinational collection of skyscrapers, golf courses and other properties that catapulted him to wealth, fame and the White House.
Trump’s lawyers had said even before the verdict that they would appeal.
James sued Trump in 2022 under a state law that authorizes her to investigate persistent fraud in business dealings.
The suit accused Trump and his co-defendants of routinely puffing up his financial statements to create an illusion his properties were more valuable than they really were. State lawyers said Trump exaggerated his wealth by as much as $3.6 billion one year.
By making himself seem richer, Trump qualified for better loan terms, saved on interest and was able to complete projects he might otherwise not have finished, state lawyers said.
Even before the trial began, Engoron ruled that James had proven Trump’s financial statements were fraudulent. The judge ordered some of Trump’s companies removed from his control and dissolved. An appeals court put that decision on hold.
In that earlier ruling, the judge found that, among other tricks, Trump’s financial statements had wrongly claimed his Trump Tower penthouse was nearly three times its actual size and overvalued his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, based on the idea that the property could be developed for residential use, even though he had surrendered rights to develop it for any uses but a club.
Trump, one of 40 witnesses to testify at the trial, said his financial statements actually understated his net worth and that banks did their own research and were happy with his business.
“There was no victim. There was no anything,” Trump testified in November.
During the trial, Trump called the judge “extremely hostile” and the attorney general “a political hack.” In a six-minute diatribe during closing arguments in January, Trump proclaimed “I am an innocent man” and called the case a “fraud on me.”
Trump and his lawyers have said the outside accountants that helped prepare the statements should’ve flagged any discrepancies and that the documents came with disclaimers that shielded him from liability. They also argued that some of the allegations were barred by the statute of limitations.
The suit is one of many legal headaches for Trump as he campaigns for a return to the White House. He has been indicted four times in the last year — accused in Georgia and Washington, D.C., of plotting to overturn his 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden, in Florida of hoarding classified documents, and in Manhattan of falsifying business records related to hush money paid to porn actor Stormy Daniels on his behalf.
On Thursday, a judge confirmed Trump’s hush-money trial will start on March 25 and a judge in Atlanta heard arguments on whether to remove Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from his Georgia election interference case because she had a personal relationship with a special prosecutor she hired.
Those criminal accusations haven’t appeared to undermine his march toward the Republican presidential nomination, but civil litigation has threatened him financially.
On Jan. 26, a jury ordered Trump to pay $83.3 million to writer E. Jean Carroll for defaming her after she accused him in 2019 of sexually assaulting her in a Manhattan department store in the 1990s. That’s on top of the $5 million a jury awarded Carroll in a related trial last year.
In 2022, the Trump Organization was convicted of tax fraud and fined $1.6 million in an unrelated criminal case for helping executives dodge taxes on extravagant perks such as Manhattan apartments and luxury cars.
James had asked the judge to impose a penalty of at least $370 million.
Engoron decided the case because neither side sought a jury and state law doesn’t allow for juries for this type of lawsuit.
Because it was civil, not criminal in nature, the case did not carry the potential of prison time.
James, who campaigned for office as a Trump critic and watchdog, started scrutinizing his business practices in March 2019 after his former personal lawyer Michael Cohen testified to Congress that Trump exaggerated his wealth on financial statements provided to Deutsche Bank while trying to obtain financing to buy the NFL’s Buffalo Bills.
James’ office previously sued Trump for misusing his own charitable foundation to further his political and business interests. Trump was ordered to pay $2 million to an array of charities as a fine and the charity, the Trump Foundation, was shut down.
Trump incorporated the Trump Organization in New York in 1981. He still owns it, but he put his assets into a revocable trust and gave up his positions as the company’s director, president and chairman when he became president, leaving management of the company to sons Eric and Donald Trump Jr.
Trump did not return to a stated leadership position upon leaving the White House in 2021, but his sons testified he’s been involved in some decision making.
Engoron had already appointed a monitor, retired federal judge Barbara Jones, to keep an eye on the company.

BELLINGHAM, Wash. (AP) — Evelyn Jefferson walks deep into a forest dotted with the tents of unhoused Lummi Nation tribal members and calls out names. When someone appears, she and a nurse hand out the opioid overdose reversal medication naloxone.
Jefferson, a tribal member herself, knows how critical these kits are: Just five months ago, her own son died of an overdose from a synthetic opioid that’s about 100 times more potent than fentanyl. The 37-year-old’s death was the fourth related to opioids in four days on the reservation.
“It took us eight days to bury him because we had to wait in line, because there were so many funerals in front of his,” said Jefferson, crisis outreach supervisor for Lummi Nation. “Fentanyl has really taken a generation from this tribe.”
A bill before the Washington Legislature would bring more state funding to tribes like Lummi that are trying to keep opioids from taking the next generation too. The state Senate unanimously approved a bill this week that is expected to provide nearly $8 million total each year for the 29 federally recognized tribes in Washington, funds drawn in part from a roughly half-billion-dollar settlement between the state and major opioid distributors.
The approach comes as Native Americans and Alaska Natives in Washington die of opioid overdoses at five times the state average, according to 2021-2022 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data that includes provisional numbers. The rate in Washington is one of the highest in the U.S. and more than three times the rate nationwide — but many of the Indigenous nations in the state lack the funding or medical resources to fully address it.
Lummi Nation, like many tribes, faces an additional challenge when it comes to keeping outside drug dealers off their land: A complicated jurisdictional maze means tribal police often can’t arrest non-tribal members on the reservation.
“What do we do when we have a non-Lummi, predatory drug dealer on our reservation with fentanyl, driving around or on their property and are selling drugs?” said Anthony Hillaire, tribal chairman.
Against the backdrop, tribes such as the Lummi Nation, about 100 miles (161 kilometers) north of Seattle, say the proposed funding — while appreciated — would barely scratch the surface. The tribe of about 5,300 people on the shores of the Salish Sea has already suffered nearly one overdose death a week this year.
Lummi Nation needs $12 million to fully finance a 16-bed, secure medical detox facility that incorporates the tribe’s culture, Hillaire said, and money to construct a new counseling center after damage from flooding. Those costs alone far exceed the annual total that would be designated for tribes under the legislation. The Senate has proposed allotting $12 million in its capital budget to the facility.
“We’re a sovereign nation. We’re a self-governed tribe. We want to take care of ourselves because we know how to take care of ourselves,” he said. “And so we usually just need funding and law changes — good policies.”
The proposed measure would earmark funds deposited into an opioid settlement account, which includes money from the state’s $518 million settlement in 2022 with the nation’s three largest opioid distributors, for tribes battling addiction. Tribes are expected to receive $7.75 million or 20% of the funds deposited into the account the previous fiscal year — whichever is greater — annually.
Republican state Sen. John Braun, one of the bill’s sponsors, has said he envisions the funds being distributed through a grant program.
“If this ends up being the wrong amount of money or we’re distributing it inequitably, I’m happy to deal with this,” he said. “This is just going to get us started, and make sure we’re not sitting on our hands, waiting for the problem to solve itself.”
Opioid overdose deaths for Native Americans and Alaska Natives have increased dramatically in the past few years in Washington, with at least 100 in 2022 — 75 more than in 2019, according to the most recent numbers available from the Washington State Department of Health.
In September, Lummi Nation declared a state of emergency over fentanyl, adding drug-sniffing dogs and checkpoints, while revoking bail for drug-related charges.
The tribe has also opened a seven-bed facility to help members with withdrawal and get them on medication for opioid use disorder, while providing access to a neighboring cultural room where they work with cedar and sage. In its first five months, the facility treated 63 people, the majority of whom are still on the medication regimen today, said Dr. Jesse Davis, medical director of the Lummi Healing Spirit Opioid Treatment program.
But truly thwarting this crisis must go beyond just Lummi Nation working on its own, said Nickolaus Lewis, Lummi councilmember.
“We can do everything in our power to protect our people. But if they go out into Bellingham, they go out anywhere off the reservation, what good is it going to do if they have different laws and different policies, different barriers?” he said.
The tribe has urged Washington Gov. Jay Inslee and President Joe Biden to declare states of emergency in response to the opioid crisis to create a bigger safety net and drive additional vital resources to the problem.
In the encampment in Bellingham, Jefferson estimates there are more than 60 tribal members, some she recognizes as her son’s friends, while others are Lummi elders. She suspects many of them left the reservation to avoid the tribe’s crackdown on opioids.
When she visits them, her van filled with food, hand warmers and clothing to hand out, she wears the shirt her niece gave her the day after her son died. It reads, “fight fentanyl like a mother.”
“It’s a losing battle but, you know, somebody’s got to be there to let them know — those addicts — that somebody cares,” Jefferson said. “Maybe that one person will come to treatment because you’re there to care.”

Another community meeting to curb gun violence will happen in Salem in March
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A town hall in Salem is bringing leaders and community members together to find ways to curb gun violence following a recent report showing shootings have doubled over the past five years.
The main message coming out of that meeting was “we are all in this together.”
With the Salem community coming together to find solutions to the epidemic, the police chief said it starts with having a conversation.
“Put yourself in the shoes of parents of a 15-year-old recently found shot to death in a pick-up truck,” said Chief Trevor Womack, of the Salem Police Department. ”We need to focus on our limited resources in a way that achieve big results and there’s no time to waste. These are literally life and death situations in our community.”
The Marion County Juvenile Department is also seeing concerning trends in younger kids when it comes to firearm-related offenses.
“It’s doubled almost tripled with an access to kids getting firearms in the community and being picked up on weapon-related charges,” said Troy Gregg, director of the Marion County Juvenile Department.
Nearly half of these cases have group and gang involvement.
Researchers found that one five-mile-square area of Northeast Salem is where most of city’s shootings are happening. That’s causing fear in the community
“We hear gunshots at night and there are times we go around and make sure the doors are locked we have a flashlight nearby,” said resident John McDonnell. “Yes, it does cause anxiety.”
Salem-Keizer School District is also seeing an increase of young people involved in violence. That’s why they said it’s important to get everyone involved in making the city safer.
“We need find a way to educate all of the community and completely educate our kids on what the potential of gun violence can bring not only to them, their family and friends and other avenues,” said Kenny Ramirez, the security field coordinator for SKSD
Officials hope to make the most impact in the 18 to 34 age group, which is the demographic most affected in the crisis.
“The criminal justice partners have tools we can use but we want to make sure we use those in the right way,” Womack said. “We’re not talking about incarceration here. But trying to limit risks for those people, to come alongside community partners that can develop some prevention and intervention efforts for that age group.”
The Salem Police Department will hold another public meeting for the community with the aim of gun violence reduction on March 6 at the East Salem Community Center.

Some background information, on Friday, April 7, 2023 the Douglas Interagency Narcotics Team (DINT), issued a news release titled “Meth/Fentanyl Arrests” who the subjects of interest were identified as Hondurans Jorge Alvarenga and Daniel Mendoza-Archaga.
Here is an extended excerpt from DINT’s April 7, 2023 news release on Jorge Alvarenga and Daniel Mendoza-Archaga:
“Detectives with the Douglas Interagency Narcotics Team (DINT) arrested two Honduran men in the early morning hours of April 6th, 2023. Detectives have been investigating this organization for some time and have developed information indicating they are involved with large scale drug trafficking crimes.
Detectives contacted the individuals as they were sitting in their vehicle in the parking lot of a business in the 700 block of NW Garden Valley Blvd in Roseburg, at approximately 2:45 AM on Thursday morning. The individuals had just arrived in the area from California. Both individuals were detained, pending application for a search warrant for their vehicle.
Detectives obtained the search warrant and upon searching the vehicle found a huge amount of both methamphetamine and fentanyl, including a large amount of suspected carfentanil.
As many know at this point, Fentanyl is a dangerous synthetic opioid that is the dominant drug of choice among opiate addicts today. Fentanyl has been the driving factor in the astronomical rise in overdose cases across our country, including here in Douglas County. Fentanyl is estimated to be 50 times more potent than heroin.
Carfentanil is a fentanyl analog, but is estimated to be 100 times more potent than fentanyl. Carfentanil is used in the veterinary industry, usually on very large mammals such as elephants. Carfentanil is odorless and tasteless, and is often cut into other drugs like fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamine, and heroin. The dangers of such a drug cannot be overstated.
In the suspects’ vehicle, detectives found the following:
• Approximately 1,614 grams (3.5 pounds) of suspected methamphetamine.

32 year old Jorge Alvarenga, and 26 year old Daniel Mendoza-Archaga were both lodged in the Douglas County jail on the following charges:
• Unlawful Possession, Manufacture, and Delivery of Methamphetamine
• Unlawful Possession, Manufacture, and Delivery of a Controlled Substance Schedule II.” – Douglas Interagency Narcotics Team.
After DINT’s April 7, 2023 news release the “Criminal Alien of the Week Report” did a OREGON JUDICIAL DEPARTMENT – Online Records Search on Jorge Alvarenga (Douglas County Circuit Court Case Number: 23CR16239) and Daniel Mendoza-Archaga (Douglas County Circuit Court Case Number: 23CR16274).
Jorge Alvarenga (aka Jorge Alvarengo) on April 7, 2023 was charged with two counts of Mfg/Delivery Controlled Substance in Schedule II, one count Delivery of Methamphetamine, one count Manufacture of Methamphetamine, one count of Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance – Schedule II and one count Unlawful Possession of Methamphetamine.
On the same date of April 7, 2023 Daniel Enrique Mendoza-Archaga (aka Daniel Mendoza-Archaga) was charged with one count of Mfg/Delivery Counterfeit Substance in Schedule II, one count Delivery of Methamphetamine, one count of Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance – Schedule II and one count Unlawful Possession of Methamphetamine.
On April 25, 2023 in Douglas County Circuit Court a judge dismissed the drug crime charges against Jorge Alvarenga.
Also on April 25, 2023 in Douglas County Circuit Court a judge dismissed the drug crime charges against Daniel Enrique Mendoza-Archaga.
On Wednesday, April 26, 2023 Jorge Alvarenga-Enriquez (U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon Court Case Number: 6:23-CR-00241) and Daniel Enrique Mendoza-Archaga (U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon Court Case Number: 6:23-CR-00241) made their first appearance in U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon where they were charged with federal drug crimes.
Seeking more detailed information immigration status of Jorge Alvarenga-Enriquez and Daniel Enrique Mendoza-Archaga on Monday, January 22, 2024 the “Criminal Alien of the Week Report” contacted via e-mail U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Public Affairs for the Northwest Region.
On Wednesday, February 7, 2024an ICE Public Affairs Officer (PAO) responded via e-mail with the following statement on Jorge Alvarenga-Enriquez:
“ICE officers make enforcement decisions on a case-by-case basis in a professional and responsible manner, informed by their experience as law enforcement officials and in a way that best protects against the greatest threats to the homeland.
ON BACKGROUND:
Jorge Alvarenga-Enriquez, 32, is a citizen of Honduras unlawfully present in the U.S. who is currently being held in Oregon on charges related to drug trafficking. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) first encountered Alvarenga-Enriquez 12 April 2007, and he has been removed to his home country on six different occasions. ERO Seattle has placed an immigration detainer with the Douglas County Jail, Oregon, where he is currently being held while awaiting criminal trial.
Dates of removal performed by ICE, as ordered by an immigration judge:
• June 12, 2007
• May 14, 2008
• Feb. 18, 2010
• July 18, 2013
• Oct. 17, 2013
• March 29, 2017

The following week, on Wednesday, February 14, 2024 an ICE Public Affairs Officer (PAO) responded via e-mail with the following statement on Daniel Enrique Mendoza-Archaga:

Daniel Enrique Mendoza-Archaga, 27, is a citizen of Honduras unlawfully present in the U.S. who is currently awaiting criminal trial on federal charges related to drug trafficking. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) first encountered Mendoza-Archaga Nov. 15, 2015, and he was ordered removed to his home country by an immigration judge Oct. 4, 2016. ERO Seattle encountered Mendoza-Archaga April 6, 2023, following his arrest by the Douglas County, Oregon, Sheriff’s Office for unlawful possession and delivery of methamphetamine and controlled substances, placing an immigration detainer the same day. After federal charges were filed by the U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon, an immigration detainer was placed with the U.S. Marshals Service.

If in the near future Honduran nationals Jorge Alvarenga-Enriquez and Daniel Enrique Mendoza-Archaga are both convicted and sentenced for drug crimes in U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon they could join more than 24-thousand criminal aliens currently incarcerated in the U.S. Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) prison system.
