    While inflation and elevated interest rates have hurt borrowers recently, they’ve boosted savers with interest-earning accounts. For example, high-yield savings and certificates of deposit (CD) account holders have earned exponentially more on their money than they could have just a few years ago. With CD interest rates hovering close to 6% for select terms right now, there’s significant money to be made simply by transferring funds from one account to another. That said, the rate climate could change as the year evolves, particularly if the Federal Reserve sees continued success with reducing inflation.

    Against this backdrop, current CD account holders should be preparing their next move now, before their CD matures. With the volatility of the market top of mind, it’s smart to be proactive. Below, we’ll break down three things savers should consider doing before their CD matures.

    Here are three things savers should consider doing before their CD term concludes.

    Review your existing CD terms

    Many CD accounts will automatically renew, potentially at a less advantageous interest rate than initially obtained. So, before your CD matures, carefully review your existing CD terms to determine if this will happen to your CD. 

    You may have a short window to remove the funds or transfer them to a different account before they roll over to a new account. Or you may be able to put them into a CD with a different term or different rate (or both). But you won’t be able to make any of these changes without first reviewing and understanding your existing CD terms and limitations.

    Compare your options

    Sure, CD rates today are high, but that high rate comes with a cost, namely the inability to withdraw those funds. If you withdraw your money early, you’ll generally get stuck paying a penalty. But there are other options available now with competitive rates that don’t come with these same restrictions. 

    High-yield savings accounts, for instance, come with rates almost as high as the best CDs but without the limitations CDs do. On the other hand, high-yield savings account rates are variable and subject to change based on market conditions. But that may be worth it for you in exchange for greater access to your money. So compare your options now, before your CD matures, so you’ll be prepared to make the right move at the right time.

    Explore CD laddering

    CD laddering involves opening multiple CDs with different terms, allowing you more freedom to move your money around more freely than you would have with one account and one term. In today’s market, with rate cuts predicted but no concrete timeline for when they will come, it can be beneficial to take this approach. 

    So, if you have $10,000 in a CD now, you may want to take half of that amount and put it into a long-term CD when it matures and the other half in a short-term one, giving you an edge for when the rate climate does change. This strategy may not be beneficial for everyone, but it could be valuable for select savers.

    The bottom line

    In today’s rate climate CD account holders — and those savers considering CDs — need to be thoughtful in their approach. If you have a CD approaching its maturity date, this thoughtfulness extends to reviewing your current terms, exploring alternatives and looking into the benefits of CD laddering.     Kevin Spacey Not Welcome in Philadelphia, It Turns Out

    We thought it was a bit peculiar when, last week, we saw that the Philadelphia Film Society was presenting the premiere of the new Kevin Spacey movie Peter Five Eight.  The event would also include an appearance by Spacey. Not that the Philadelphia Film Society isn’t allowed to do that, of course. But the Philadelphia Film Society is a nonprofit arts organization. It relies on lots and lots of funding and cooperation to exist. And Spacey has had a certain stench lingering around him ever since several men accused him of sexual misconduct in 2017.

    Hell, Netflix booted Spacey from its mega-hit show House of Cards, scrambling to make a last season without him. Ridley Scott had to reshoot a movie with Christopher Plummer playing the role that Scott had already shot Spacey in. This project, canceled. That project, canceled. In short, Kevin Spacey was canceled.

    Spacey has steadfastly maintained his innocence. In 2022, one of those men sued Spacey for $40 million. He alleged that Spacey had molested him when he was a teenager. But a jury sided with Spacey. Then, last year, a jury in London acquitted him in a sexual assault case. And yet eyebrows go up whenever one mentions the name Kevin Spacey. So due to optics and this and that, definitely an odd choice for the Philadelphia Film Society to make.

    But it turns out the Philadelphia Film Society wasn’t presenting the premiere of Peter Five Eight. The organization makes part of its money from rentals. The company behind Peter Five Eight rented a Philadelphia Film Society facility for the screening. And, well, the Philadelphia Film Society has now canceled said screening. The head of the organization told the Inquirer the screening was supposed to be private and not open to the public — and it also wasn’t supposed to be billed as a “premiere.”

    Oh well. Peter Five Eight is scheduled for release this Friday. I’m just not sure where you’ll be able to see it. No local showtimes.

    In a bit of Philadelphia-Kevin Spacey trivia, the actor was very much welcome here back on July 4, 2001. That’s when Philadelphia hosted a dramatic reading of the Declaration of Independence on the 225th anniversary of its adoption. The readers included Mel Gibson, Morgan Freeman, Kathy Bates, Michael Douglas, Whoopi Goldberg and, yes, Kevin Spacey.

    Local Talent

    Jerry Blavat died last year. And a lot of folks were wondering what would happen to his legendary Memories club in Margate. We now have our answer: Memories will reopen on Memorial Day Weekend under the helm of Teddy Sourias. (He’s the guy behind such Philly bars as BRU Craft & Wurst, U-Bahn and Finn McCool’s Ale House. Oh, and that nauseating Christmas-themed bar Tinsel.) No word on whether they’ll have a life-size statue of Blavat for you to take selfies with.

    By the Numbers

    75,000: Comic books donated to Penn’s Kislak Center for Special Collections, Rare Books and Manuscripts. There’s definitely a joke to be made here about Penn being in need of some comic relief.

    $60 million: What the American Bible Institute spent to build a Bible-focused museum in Philadelphia. It’s shutting down after less than three years. I’m told this came as quite the revelation to the many staffers losing their jobs.

    51%: Portion of people applying to become a Philadelphia police officer who now pass the new physical fitness test after police lowered the standards for just what physical fitness is. Previously, about 36 percent of people passed the test. I just can’t get the image of Andy Sipowicz out of my mind.

    From the Fun-Run-Hon Sports Desk …

    We got your weekend roundup right here! The Sixers hosted the Hornets on Saturday and began with Tyrese Maxey, Nic Batum, Mo Bamba, Kyle Lowry and Kelly Oubre Jr. on the floor. It was Joel Embiid’s 30th birthday, and he was in the house and got a cupcake!

    A strong start, and the Sixers led 27-24 at the end of the first. They stretched that out to 53-47 at halftime, but the Hornets got within one with five minutes to go in the third. Eh, we were back up by eight to start the fourth, led by …

    Oops — don’t relax yet! Charlotte took a one-point lead with 8:30 left in the frame, Bamba got hit with a T, and then, in uncharacteristic fashion (we kid, we kid), the Sixers finished strong in what turned into a comfy 109-98 victory. Tonight, the Heat come to visit us, with a 7:30 tip.

    How’d the Phillies Do?

    Friday’s starter, Cristopher Sánchez, gave up four runs in the first three innings, and a two-run Phils flurry in the ninth wasn’t enough to close the gap. Final: Astros 5, Phils 3. In Saturday’s game, they wound up tied, 3-3, with the Marlins after nine. Tie baseball games still confuse us. Hot-hot Whit Merrifield had two hits and two RBIs in that one. It was another tie, 5-5 this time, on Sunday vs. the Blue Jays. Zack Wheeler went four innings and gave up one run on three hits and a walk; Jordan Luplow homered for us. There’s a doubleheader on the books for today, against the Pirates and the Yankees, both at 1:05.

    Any Doop News?

    Just the first regular-season Union match on Saturday night, against Austin FC in Austin. Daniel Gazdag scored 14 minutes in on a PK awarded for a handball, and we held that 1-0 lead going into the half. But Austin’s Diego Rubio tied it up with a header in the 55th minute — followed by Joe Gallagher scoring another one two minutes later. Damn. Woo-hoo, though — Mikail Uhre tied it at 64 minutes! Jack Elliott got slapped with a yellow card five minutes later, giving Austin a free kick just outside the box, but it sailed 20 feet over the goal. Damion Lowe picked up a yellow in the 86th, also not far outside the box, though he was as much fouled against as fouling, IMHO. No worries; Philly got the ball back and drove down, though not for a score. Seven minutes of stoppage were added, and then three on top of that, a little shoving match, and a game that ended right there: a 2-2 tie.

    And in College Hoops?

    Eleven-seeded Temple’s second-round Atlantic 10 tournament game vs. third-seeded UNC Charlotte Friday night got started an hour late, which wasn’t such a bad thing, since they’d played (and won) on Thursday night. Despite the extra rest, their start was super-slow — 2-for-17, in fact. But Charlotte wasn’t exactly sparkling, either; the first half had them ahead 22-17 in a real snooze cruise. In the second half, it was all Jordan Riley for the Owls; he tied it at 25 five minutes in, and before long, they went ahead, 32-27. And they kept that lead, though the final minutes got hairy, in what the announcer termed Temple’s “improbable run” and a 58-54 win!

    That brought them to the semifinal on Saturday against two-seed Florida Atlantic, also, confusingly, the Owls, where they finished the first half trailing 32-25, with part of the harm courtesy of a last-second crappy foul call. They tied it up at 46 five minutes into the second half, then got on the seesaw, with our Owls showing poise and patience and playing good D. With eight minutes to go, they were up by seven, but their Owls pulled within three with four left, then tied it a minute later. Some good rebounding and a timely Hysier Miller three got our bench even more excited.

    Then it was a matter of running the clock out to hold the five-point lead, but a Riley foul on a three-point FAU attempt, followed by a tie-up on Temple’s inbound pass, made it harrowing as they clung to a one-point lead. Temple’s ball, but could they get the ball inbounds? They did, and Shane Dezonie nailed two foul shots for the three-point lead, but FAU hit two foul shots, so still only one away. Dezonie, at the foul line, missed two shots, but FLU couldn’t make the layup, and our Owls moved on!

    Holy cannoli, what a game. In the championship round on Sunday, the Owls were off to their usual slow start, this time against the University of Alabama Birmingham, a team that beat them by 28 points a week earlier — the game, in fact, that got the point-shaving kerfuffle going. They hung in there through most of the first, but UAB had a run late in the half and led at the break 43-27. Miller had 16 points. After that, though, it was pretty much all Blazers, though the Owls got as close as 12 points with three minutes to go. So no Cinderella comeback, just an 85-69 loss. Still, what a great tournament you gave us, Owls — hoot!

    Also on Saturday, ninth-seeded St. Joe’s staged a first-half comeback against the five-seed VCU Rams to lead 25-23 at the break, but with 40 seconds left in the game, they were behind again, 63-60. Would the miracle run continue? Nah — the Hawks lost, 66-60. Still, another great, fun run. Thanks!

    The Flyers also played.

    As a reminder, the Eagles are currently projected to have 8 picks in the 2024 NFL Draft. While it’s likely that Howie Roseman will move up and/or down the board as he usually does, we’ll play it straight here and simply act as though the Eagles will stick and pick.

    DeJean can play outside corner, slot corner, safety, or linebacker. He was also one of the best punt returners in college football, and he’s an outstanding gunner. He is simply a ridiculous athlete and football player.

    In 2022, DeJean had 75 tackles, 5 INTs (3 pick-sixes), and 8 pass breakups. Here are all five of those picks:

    Round 2 (from New Orleans): Kingsley Suamataia, OT, BYU (6’5, 326)

    Suamataia came in at No. 3 on Bruce Feldman’s “Freaks” list this offseason, with the following glowing review.

    Coaches have always been great resources for this project over the years. That said, it’s been awhile since I stared at a response as long as I did the one I received from BYU offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick this month.

    “Kingsley Suamataia is the most athletic and violent OL I’ve ever coached. More athletic than Garett Bolles when I was at Utah. More athletic than Blake Freeland,” he wrote.

    Bolles was a first-round pick and has started all 82 games he’s played in the NFL, and the 6-8, 302-pound Freeland, BYU’s left tackle last year, lit up the combine last spring by running a 4.98 40, vertical-jumping 37 inches — a combine record for offensive tackles — and broad-jumping 10-0, which was 1 inch away from the combine record for that, too. More athletic than Freeland, especially in that Suamataia weighs 23 pounds more, seemed like a mouthful.

    The 6-6, 325-pound Suamataia didn’t allow a sack last season, a run of 361 pass plays.

    “Kingsley is off the charts,” BYU sports scientist Skyler Mayne says. “He’s faster than our linebackers. He’s just a Freak in the weight room. What makes it look different from Blake is that Kingsley just makes it look a little more effortless. Blake was a better jumper, but Kingsley was our fastest lineman by a good bit.”

    According to Mayne, Suamataia hit 21.5 MPH last year as a 318-pound freshman. That’s really good for a 218-pounder, much less an athlete 100 pounds more than that.

    “He’s so fluid and smooth,” Mayne says. “I think he could run in the 4.8s. He’s definitely a sub-5 guy (in the 40). He’s super explosive and can throw a ton of weight around. You watch him on the field throw a big defensive end around with one arm, and he doesn’t even break stride. If he wanted to be a tight end or fullback, because he’s so naturally gifted and has the agility, he could.”

    In addition to being a premier athlete, Suamataia also has plenty of nastiness in his game. 

    As an added bonus, he has experience playing both at LT and RT, which means that he could be a swing tackle off the bench early in his career before eventually taking over for Lane Johnson at RT. 

    Round 2: Payton Wilson, LB, NC State (6’4, 233)

    Let’s get Wilson’s downside out of the way first. He has torn his right ACL twice, he dislocated both shoulders in the same game in 2021 (necessitating surgery), and he’ll be 24 by the time he’s drafted. He’s older than every player the Eagles drafted last year, except Sydney Brown, who is older by a month. He’s two years older than Kelee Ringo and Moro Ojomo. Some teams — and some of my readers — are going to be out on him, and I get that.

    So why take him in the second round? Well, he’s a complete linebacker with size (6’4, 233) and speed (4.43 40) who can cover, who can play the run, who can get sideline-to-sideline, and who had outstanding production in 2023 (138 tackles, 17.5 for loss, 6 sacks, 3 INTs, 6 PBUs, 1 FF).

    The Eagles have been willing to take swings on injury risk players in the second round in the past, sometime with success (Landon Dickerson), sometime not (Sidney Jones).

    Round 4: Theo Johnson, TE, Penn State (6’6, 259)

    Johnson didn’t have eye-popping production at Penn State, as he had just 341 receiving yards in his best season in 2023. (He did have 7 TDs).

    However, he is thought of as a very good blocker, and he has outstanding athleticism. 

    Johnson did a nice job creating separation and making a lot of hands catches in Senior Bowl practices. He could be an out-of-the-box TE2 for the Eagles, with upside to develop into a good receiving tight end. 

    Round 5: Zak Zinter, OG, Michigan (6’6, 309)

    Zinter was a First-Team All American at RG for Michigan this season, but he broke his fibula and tibia in a win over Ohio State, ending his season. They were “clean breaks,” so Zinter should be ready to go for training camp. He played his entire career at RG, and could be a reliable starter in the pros. He was a key piece on a great Michigan offensive line who is a brawler in the run game, and who has good length in pass pro.

    There are a couple knocks:

    • Zinter won’t remind anyone of Jason Kelce athletically. He’s just OK in that regard.

    • As noted above, his entire college career was spent at RG, so he’s lacking in versatility. If you draft him and slot him in at guard and he hits, cool. If he doesn’t hit as a starter, he won’t have much value as a backup either because he is probably a guard only.

    For the Eagles’ purposes, with Jason Kelce retired and Cam Jurgens moving to center, the Eagles have an opening at RG. Depending on what they think of Tyler Steen, they may or may not be looking for a starting guard. If Zinter can be had at a discount in the draft because of his injury and his lack of versatility, then he would make sense on Day 3.

    Round 5: James Williams, S/LB, Miami (6’4, 231)

    Williams was a downhill, big-hitting enforcer in Miami’s defense. Fun highlight reel:

    In 2023, Williams has 73 tackles, an INT, 5 pass breakups, and 2 forced fumbles. 

    The Eagles seem to be into hybrid players this offseason. They signed safety / slot corner hybrid Chauncey Gardner-Johnson and edge rusher / off-ball linebacker hybrid Zack Baun in free agency. Williams is a safety / linebacker who would make sense in a sub-package role.

    Round 5: Javon Baker, WR, UCF (6’1, 202)

    The highlight of Senior Bowl practices was when an unsuspecting Baker took a Michael Penix laser off the side of his head on a crossing route. I think (?) Baker thought the play was over and stopped paying attention, and… WHAP. You could hear it from 50 yards away lol.

    But also, I was impressed by Baker’s ability to create separation, and when I looked up his numbers I discovered that he averaged 21.9 yards per reception in 2023 for UCF. 

    Howie Roseman likes taking shots on Day 3 deep threats with high yards per catch averages, like Shelton Gibson, John Hightower, and Quez Watkins. The Eagles haven’t yet hit a home run on a guy like that, but I respect the approach, and Baker makes sense as that kind of guy.

    Round 6: Jalen Green, Edge, James Madison (6’1, 245)

    Green’s season ended early after he suffered a non-contact injury against Georgia State in early November, but before he went down he was leading the nation in sacks (15.5) and tackles for loss (21) in just 9 games. Had he stayed healthy, Green had a chance of breaking Elvis Dumervil’s record of 20 sacks during the 2005 season. 

    Green also had 50 tackles, 2 forced fumbles, and an INT that he returned for a TD. Monster season: 

    Because of his lack of ideal size and his injury, Green will likely go late on Day 3. I like his fit at the SAM spot in the Eagles’ defense, and if the Eagles are going to move on from Haason Reddick and Josh Sweat by 2025 they’ll need more developmental edge rushers in the pipeline.

    Zack Wheeler officially gets the nod on Opening Day

    Zack Wheeler will start for the Phillies on Opening Day, manager Rob Thomson revealed to reporters after Sunday’s game against the Blue Jays.

    It will be his first Opening Day start and snaps Aaron Nola’s streak of six straight for the Phils.

    The Phillies’ top two starters have the most relaxed demeanors you’ll find and neither has cared who got the nod. Nola was asked about it on March 7 and deferred to Wheeler, saying “Wheels should take it, he’s earned it.”

    He certainly has. As a Phillie, Wheeler has become one of the best pitchers in all of baseball. He was recognized as such with the monstrous annual average value on his new contract extension. Wheeler will make $42 million per year from 2025-27, the fourth-highest AAV of all-time.

    In four seasons with the Phillies, Wheeler has gone 43-25 with a 3.06 ERA and 1.06 WHIP and missed only six starts. He’s made an All-Star team, won a Gold Glove, finished second and sixth in Cy Young voting and compiled an already memorable playoff resume. Wheeler’s appeared in 11 playoff games with 10 starts and his 0.73 WHIP in the postseason is the lowest ever.

    Wheeler will likely draw Braves ace Spencer Strider at 3:05 p.m. on March 28 at Citizens Bank Park. The teams have a built-in off day on March 29, and Nola could start Game 2 on March 30. He and his wife, Hunter, are expecting their first child the first week of April, so the timing could affect the Phillies’ first or second cycle through the rotation. Players can miss up to three games on paternity leave.

    Wheeler has looked sharp in all three spring starts despite missing time early in camp for the birth of his third child. He didn’t pitch until March 5 but kept himself busy with bullpen sessions. He’s gone two, three and four innings, allowing just two runs.

    “Pumped,” Nola said shortly after it became official that Wheeler would be with the Phillies through at least the end of 2027.

    “It’s great for the team, the organization, the city. He’s a stud and I love being his teammate. He’s one of the best pitchers in the game.

    “It’s a pretty special team. Being able to get to the playoffs the last two years with roughly the same guys, it’s pretty special to have the same team and hopefully for years to come.”

    Wheeler has pitched extremely well against his first opponent, the Braves. As a Phillie, he’s made 15 starts vs. Atlanta and gone 6-3 with a 2.49 ERA and 0.92 WHIP. He’s struck out 113 and walked 17 in those 97⅔ innings against baseball’s best lineup over that period.

    HADDON TOWNSHIP, New Jersey (WPVI) — Hundreds of people packed Haddon Square to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on Sunday.

    Haddon Township once again went green for its annual St. Paddy’s Day Pub Crawl. The two-day event, which featured several establishments on the square, drew dozens of people who were draped in their Irish green attire and four-leaf clover necklaces.

    By mid-afternoon, the good times were rolling for party-goers like Kevin Luscomb, who told Action News he was in love with the atmosphere.

    “It’s terrific-terrific,” Luscomb said. “Everybody’s happy here.”

    This year, nearly a dozen bars and restaurants opened their doors for St. Paddy’s Day bar hoppers with hopes of infusing some extra cash or gold into their coffers.

    At P.J. Whelihan’s outside event, people came to the party as they indulged in food, dancing, and plenty of beverages.

    Having best friends there to enjoy the good vibes was a must for Jeannie Connor, who said she and her friends were Irish and celebrated their heritage together every year.

    Connor said she even rushed back to Haddon Township from a wedding in South Carolina so she wouldn’t miss out on any fun.

    “It’s very important,” she said. “We all work hard. We raise families. It’s good to have a day to blow off steam and celebrate your heritage.”

    To ensure everyone had the opportunity to drink safely, the township offered a free Jitney service so people could get to and from bars without issue.

    Michael Cabrera said it was a great way to meet tons of new people and keep the spirit of the day alive.

    “I love a good bar crawl just cause you get to meet whoever, wherever, know what I mean? You get to go to different places, try different drinks that everyone else has,” Cabrera told Action News.

    While the day was largely about having fun for many people, one kid we spoke to, Logan Kuehner, said he was focused on one of the most important aspects of St. Paddy’s Day: catching a leprechaun.

    He even shared his strategies on how to nab one.

    “I left a big box out that has muffins so he might think that there was muffins in it,” Kuehner explained. “He climbed in but he didn’t get trapped.”

    In Philadelphia, there was no shortage of celebrators out embracing their Irish heritage.

    Bargoers at Ryan’s Pub in Manayunk let their Irish roots shine bright.

    “My mom’s 100% Irish. I get to tap into that side a little, you know get to enjoy all of that, have some Guinness-best beer out there. So, get to have a great time,” noted Jou Ronzer from West Chester.

    St. Paddy’s Day is something Imoni Williams looks forward to every year and says it’s a holiday everyone can embrace.

    “Absolutely! Everyone’s Irish today,” she said.

    Clement has a plea for parents: Stop texting your kids at school.

    Parents are distressingly aware of the distractions and the mental health issues associated with smartphones and social media. But teachers say parents might not realize how much those struggles play out at school.

    One culprit? Mom and Dad themselves, whose stream-of-consciousness questions add to a climate of constant interruption and distraction from learning. Even when schools regulate or ban cellphones, it’s hard for teachers to enforce it. And the constant buzzes on watches and phones are occupying critical brain space regardless of whether kids are sneaking a peek.

    A few changes in parents’ behavior can help make phones less distracting at school. Here’s what teachers and experts recommend.

    Try it: Stop texting your kid at school

    Many parents stay in touch with their child by texting, but school is a place for focusing on learning and developing independence. Teachers say you can still reach your child if you have a change in plans or a family emergency: Just contact the front office.

    If the message is not urgent, it can probably wait.

    Think of it this way: “If you came to school and said, ‘Can you pull my child out of calculus so I can tell them something not important?’ we would say no,” central Virginia school counselor Erin Rettig said.

    Teachers emphasized: They are not saying parents are to blame for school cellphone battles, just that parents can do more to help. Tell your kids, for example, not to text home unless it is urgent. And if they do, ignore it.

    “When your children are texting you stuff that can wait — like, ‘Can I go to Brett’s house five days from now?’ — don’t respond,” said Sabine Polak, one of three mothers who co-founded the Phone-Free Schools Movement. “You have to stop engaging. That’s just feeding the problem.”

    Cut the cord from 8 to 3

    Many parents got used to being in constant contact during the COVID-19 pandemic, when kids were home doing online school. They have kept that communication going as life has otherwise returned to normal.

    “We call it the digital umbilical cord. Parents can’t let go. And they need to,” Clement said.

    Parents might not expect their kids to respond immediately to texts (though many do). But when students pull out their phones to reply, it opens the door to other social media distractions.

    Anxiety via text message

    At parent workshops, Rettig, the school counselor in Virginia, tells parents they are contributing to children’s anxiety by sending messages, tracking their whereabouts and checking grades daily, which doesn’t give kids space to be independent at school.

    Some teachers say they get emails from parents right after returning graded exams, before the class is over, because kids feel the need (or are told) to report grades immediately to parents.

    Dr. Libby Milkovich, a developmental and behavioral pediatrician at Children’s Mercy Kansas City, says she asks parents to consider what kids miss out on by having parents at arms’ reach during school hours.

    “By texting back and forth with a parent, a child is unable to practice either self-calming or problem-solving skills,” Milkovich said. “It’s easy to text, but if I don’t have a phone, I have to go ask the teacher or I have to figure it out on my own.”

    Some kids who oppose school cellphone bans say it’s helpful to reach out to parents when they’re feeling anxious or worried at school. For children with serious anxiety who are accustomed to texting parents for reassurance, Milkovich suggests phasing in limits so the child can gradually practice having more independence. She urges parents to ask themselves: Why does my child need constant access to a phone?

    “Often parents say, ‘I want to be able to reach my child at any time,’ which has nothing to do with the child’s outcome. It’s because of the parents’ anxiety,” she said.

    Take away that old phone

    Beth Black, a high school English teacher in the San Francisco Bay Area, tells parents to consider confiscating their child’s old phones.

    Her school requires students to put phones in a special cellphone holder when they enter classrooms. But she has seen students stash their old, inactive phone there, and hold onto the phone that works.

    Like many teachers, she says phones aren’t the only problem. There’s also the earbud issue.

    “Forty percent of my students have at least one earbud in when they walk into class,” Black said. “The kids will set their phone in the holder to music and they’ll listen to music in class in one earbud.”

    Turn off notifications

    Parents’ reining in their texts will only go so far. So work with your kids to turn off some or all of their attention-stealing notifications.

    To prove just how distracting smartphones are, Clement ran an in-class experiment where he asked students to take their phones off silent and switch on notifications for two minutes.

    “It sounded like an old-time video arcade — bizzing, buzzing, dinging and ringing for two solid minutes,” he said.

    Many studies have found students check their phones frequently during class. A study last year from Common Sense Media found teens get bombarded with as many as 237 notifications a day. About 25% of them pop up during the school day, mostly from friends on social media.

    “Every time our focus is interrupted, it takes a lot of brain power and energy to get back on task,” said Emily Cherkin, a Seattle-based teacher-turned-consultant who specializes in screen-time management.

    Teachers say the best school cellphone policy is one that physically removes the phone from the child. Otherwise, it’s hard to compete.

    “When the phone vibrates in their pocket, now their focus is on their pocket. And they’re wondering, ‘How do I get it out to the table? How do I check it?’” said Randy Freiman, a high school chemistry teacher in upstate New York. “You ask them a question and they haven’t heard a word you’ve said. Their brain is elsewhere.”

    A suspect who allegedly shot and killed three people Saturday morning in Falls Township has been captured in Trenton, authorities say. He now faces charges in New Jersey related to carjackings and weapon possession. 

    Andre Gordon, 26, was taken into custody in Trenton around 5 p.m. on Saturday, according to the Bucks County district attorney’s office. Police initially believed that he was barricaded inside a home in Trenton. He was captured at a separate location, where he surrendered and was apprehended without incident, 6ABC reported. He is also accused of two carjackings.

    Gordon was believed to be barricaded inside a residence at the 100 block of Phillips Avenue in Trenton, according to police. Initial reports stated that Gordon had hostages within the barricaded home, but police said that all residents were safely evacuated from the house.

    Gordon reportedly escaped the perimeter around the barricaded home before police could set it up, authorities say. He was allegedly walking on New York Avenue in Trenton when he was stopped, identified and taken into custody, 6ABC reported. He was found about two blocks from the home where police believed he was barricaded, CNN reported. 

    Saturday morning around 8:40 a.m., Gordon allegedly carjacked a vehicle in the parking lot of Donnelly Homes in Trenton before driving to Falls Township and committing a series of shootings, New Jersey attorney general Matthew J. Platkin said in a statement.

    Around 8:52 a.m. Saturday, Gordon reportedly shot and killed his 52-year-old stepmother Karen Gordon and his 13-year-old sister Kera Gordon in a home on Viewpoint Lane. Three other residents, including a minor, were in the home and hiding during the incident, said Bucks County district attorney Jennifer Schorn in a press conference.

    Around 9:01 a.m., Gordon then drove to Edgewood Lane and shot and killed 25-year-old Taylor Daniel, with whom he has two children. Four other individuals were in the residence; one individual, Daniel’s mother, was injured after being bludgeoned by Gordon with his AR-15-style assault rifle. She was taken to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital for her injuries, authorities say.

    Around 9:13 a.m., Gordon carjacked a second vehicle in a Dollar General parking lot on Bristol Pike in Morrisville, authorities say. Gordon stole the vehicle at gunpoint, police say. The 44-year-old driver of the vehicle was not harmed. The stolen grey 2016 Honda CRV was located on the 100 block of Miller Street, a short distance from the home Gordon was believed to be barricaded in.

    Authorities say that Gordon is believed to be experiencing homelessness and has ties in Bucks County and Trenton, and they believed him to have possession of an assault rifle used in the shootings along with additional weapons. When Gordon was arrested, police say he did not have any weapons.

    Gordon was taken to the Trenton Police Department for processing, 6ABC reported. He is being lodged at the Mercer County Correction Center. According to Platkin, Gordon was charged by New Jersey authorities with first-degree carjacking, second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, second-degree unlawful possession of an assault firearm, third-degree unlawful possession of a firearm without a serial number, third-degree receiving stolen property, fourth-degree unlawful possession of large-capacity ammunition magazines, and fourth-degree possession of hollow-point ammunition. 

    Gordon will remain in custody in New Jersey before being extradited to Pennsylvania, authorities say. Gordon “will be charged in Bucks County at the appropriate time,” according to the district attorney’s office. 

    A shelter-in-place order was put into effect Saturday morning in Falls Township amid the active-shooter situation, and was lifted just before 12:30 p.m. The Bucks County St. Patrick’s Day Parade scheduled for Saturday was canceled.

    “On a day where our Lower Bucks community celebrates our proud Irish heritage, Andre shocked our region by selfishly and abhorrently taking the lives of 3 individuals who have been confirmed to be his very own family,” U.S. Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-01) wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “As we continue to investigate what happened today, let us pray for the 3 Bucks County residents we lost today and pray for all of those impacted by this tragedy.”

    Fire officials in Delaware are investigating a fire that left two people injured — including one who needed to be rescued after suffering a cardiac arrest.

    According to the state’s fire marshal, firefighters responded to a burning mobile home on Georgetown, Del. at about 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 16, to find smoke pouring from the structure.

    When the crews arrived, officials said, they encountered a victim that had been pulled from the burning structure and had suffered a cardiac arrest.

    The individual — who officials did not provide identifying information on — was successfully resuscitated and transported to a nearby hospital where they were listed in “serious condition,” the fire marshal’s office said.

    Another person was also injured in the fire and, officials said, they had been treated and released from the hospital.

    According to investigators, the damage caused by the fire was estimated to be about $25,000 and they are still working to determine the cause of the incident.

    Originally committing to Temple, Pickett played at Pitt where he amassed the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award (2021,) ACC Athlete of the Year (2022,) ACC Player of the Year (2021,) ACC Offensive Player of the Year (2021,)First-team All-American (2021,) First-team All-ACC (2021) in his college career between 2017–2021.

    Perhaps the best part of the deal is that Aloft South Bend will work with Hannah on her personal and professional growth.

    This week, Hannah Hildalgo was named as one of three freshman finalists in field of ten total for the 2024 Naismith Trophy Women’s Player of the Year as she leads the ACC with 23.3 points per game and is also a finalist for the Dawn Staley Award.

    Last but not least, she led the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to a 55–51 win in the 2024 ACC Women’s Title last week.

    In High School in Haddonfield, NJ, at Paul VI High School, Hannah was a 15x Player of the Game.

    In late March, Hannah will be trying to become an NCAA Tournament Champion.

    A Fall Weakness Has Become a March Strength at the Novacare Complex.

    Much has been made of the Eagles low prioritization on the linebacker position. After all, the last linebacker to be selected in the first round before Nolan Smith in 2023 was Jerry Robinson in 1979.

    Not anymore.

    The re-stocking of the cupboard started less than one week after the Super Bowl concluded when Philadelphia signed former Lions outside linebacker Julian Okwara to a three-year reserve/future deal.

    On Thursday, the Eagles finalized a deal for Jets linebacker Bryce Huff (three-year $51 million) and former Saints linebacker Zach Baun (one-year $1.2 million.)

    The Eagles weren’t done yet.

    Two days ago, Philly agreed to a one-year deal with Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Devin White (one-year, $7.5 million.)

    This weekend, the Eagles announced the completion of a deal with 49ers linebacker Oren Burk to a one-year, $2.5 Million deal. In addition to being a terrific linebacker upgrade, he is also a significant addition on Special Teams.

    Although the Eagles started this week by compiling four compensatory draft picks that have positioned them for the late April NFL Draft, it’s unlikely that they will go after Clemson star Jeremiah Trotter, Jr. with what they have recently acquired.

    It is ashame — we could always use another Ax Man.

    PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Police are investigating a shooting that left a 13-year-old girl injured in the Frankford neighborhood of Philadelphia.

    Officers responded to the intersection of Mulberry Street and Wilmot Street around 9 p.m. Saturday.

    At the scene, police say they found a 13-year-old girl who had been shot in the shoulder.

    She was taken to the hospital where authorities say she is in stable condition.

    No arrests have been made in this incident.

    (The Hill) — The Republican National Committee (RNC) filed a lawsuit against Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson on Wednesday to get the state to review its voter registration rolls.

    The committee alleges the state has “failed to live up” to the National Voter Registration Act’s (NVRA) requirement that voter registration rolls must be clean.

    The lawsuit, filed in federal court, argues that of Michigan’s 83 counties, at least 53 have more registered voters than adults of legal voting age. An additional 23 counties have active voter registration rates that “exceed 90 percent of adult citizens over the age of 18,” the lawsuit said.

    “This is not the first time Michigan has failed to abide by the NVRA’s requirements,” the lawsuit said, citing a 2020 lawsuit against Michigan election officials who violated the act’s requirements, which was later dismissed.

    The RNC’s lawsuit comes just days after allies of former President Trump took leadership positions and hours after the party confirmed that Trump was the GOP nominee for the 2024 election.  

    Michigan, a key swing state, voted for President Biden in the 2020 election. Biden won by 154,000 votes despite Trump’s attempt to urge officials not to certify the results.  

    Under the NVRA, states are required to conduct “a general voter registration list maintenance program” that makes a “reasonable effort” to remove people who are ineligible from voter rolls, by death or a move out of state or jurisdiction. It also protects voters from being removed if they may not have voted in years.

    The maintenance program must be “uniform, nondiscriminatory and in compliance with the Voting Rights Act,” the Department of Justice said.

    Benson said in an emailed statement that Michigan has done more in the last five years than in the previous two decades to accurately remove people from the list.

    More than 700,000 people have been removed since she took office and more will be if they don’t vote in the general election this fall. Benson said that according to federal data, Michigan is the fifth most active state in the country for removing deceased voters from its roll.

    “Let’s call this what it is: a PR campaign masquerading as a meritless lawsuit filled with baseless accusations that seek to diminish people’s faith in the security of our elections,” Benson’s statement to NBC News said. “Shame on anyone who abuses the legal process to sow seeds of doubt in our democracy.”

    UPDATE: 2:18 p.m.

    Falls Township Police confirmed the victims shot and killed by Andre Gordon on Viewpoint Lane as his 52-year-old stepmother and his 13-year-old sister. Three other residents, including a minor, were in the home and hiding during the incident, said Bucks County district attorney Jennifer Schorn in a press conference.

    Gordon then drove to Edgewood Lane and shot and killed 25-year-old Taylor Daniel, with whom he has two children. Four other individuals were in the residence; one individual, Daniel’s mother, was injured after being bludgeoned by Gordon with his AR-15-style assault rifle.

    UPDATE: 1:18 p.m.

    Police believe that Andre Gordon is barricaded inside a residence at the 100 block of Miller Street in Trenton with hostages, as of 12:22 p.m. The shelter-in-place ordered at Falls Township was lifted at 12:25 p.m. 

    Falls Township Police will hold a press conference at 2 p.m. and are referring all information regarding the ongoing hostage situation to the Trenton City Police Department.

    Police are searching for a man suspected of shooting and killing three individuals in Falls Township.

    The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Andre Gordon, reportedly shot and killed two people in a home on Viewpoint Lane around 8:52 a.m. Saturday morning. Police say that Gordon then drove to Edgewood Lane around 9:01 a.m. and shot and killed a third person before fleeing.

    Around 9:13 a.m., Gordon then stole a vehicle at gunpoint in a Dollar General parking lot on Bristol Pike in Morrisville, police say. The driver of the vehicle was not harmed. Middletown Township police now say that the vehicle, a grey 2016 Honda CRV, has been found in Trenton.

    Falls Township issued a shelter-in-place order, urging residents to “lock all doors and move to a central and secure location away from windows.”

    Authorities say that Gordon is believed to be experiencing homelessness and has ties in Bucks County and Trenton, and they believe him to have possession of an assault rifle used in the shootings, along with additional weapons.

    Pa. Governor Josh Shapiro and U.S. Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-01) are among the officials who responded to the shooting on social media.

    “I’ve been briefed on the developing incident in Falls Township, Bucks County and directed
    (Pa. State Police) to coordinate with our law enforcement partners and provide whatever support is needed on the ground,” Shapiro wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

    As a result of the active shooter situation, the Bucks County St. Patrick’s Day Parade was canceled; it was due to begin at 10:30 a.m. Several businesses and locations, such as Sesame Place, a local Target in Middletown Township and the Dollar General location in Morrisville have closed until further notice as a safety precaution.
