  • NASA sets March 6 as earliest moon mission opportunity

    KENNEDY SPACE CENTER — NASA’s Artemis II team says that after a successful test launch countdown Thursday night, they can press on with the moon mission no earlier than March 6.

    A key will be the Flight Readiness Review at the end of next week.

    The team conducted a successful wet dress rehearsal on Thursday, a full simulated launch day countdown including fully fueling the Space Launch System rocket at Kennedy Space Center.

    They say the liquid hydrogen seal issues that plagued the first wet dress rehearsal performed well.

    The replacements revealed just a 1% leak rate, far within specifications and not concerning.

    The team says that the rehearsal was a success, as it is continuing to work through the challenges revealed during the first test earlier this month.

    “The hardware was talking to us, so we listened, and the mediation activities we took turned out really well,” said John Honeycutt, Chair, Artemis II Mission Management Team.

    NASA also says it has addressed the ground systems communications issue that it had during the rehearsal.

    It has back-up radios if needed, should the problem come up again.

    The team says after the successful test, the reality of going back to the moon gets stronger.

    “Every night I look at the moon, and I see it, and I get real excited, because I can really feel she’s calling us, and we’re ready,” says Lori Glaze, Acting Associate Administrator, Exploration Systems.

    If the Flight Readiness Review goes well and a launch date is set, the crew will head from Houston to Kennedy Space Center not long after.

  • No homecoming for Jaren Jackson Jr. (knee) as Jazz visit Grizzlies

    The high-profile homecoming for Jaren Jackson Jr. will not materialize.

    When the Memphis Grizzlies sent the veteran forward to the Utah Jazz shortly before the Feb. 5 trade deadline, they realized the schedule-makers had built in an intriguing mid-February matchup.

    But when the Grizzlies play the visiting Jazz on Friday, Jackson will not be in uniform. The former Defensive Player of the Year, in his eighth NBA season, underwent successful surgery earlier this week in Salt Lake City to remove a localized pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) growth from his left knee. A physical performed after the trade revealed the growth.

    Jackson, the league’s top defender in 2022-23, will be out for at least four weeks, according to the Jazz, and could return to the court later this season.

    In his team debut on Feb. 7 against the Orlando Magic, he had 22 points, three assists and three steals in 25 minutes. He is averaging 19.4 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in 48 games, all but three with the Grizzlies.

    Jackson, John Konchar and Vince Williams Jr. went from the Grizzlies to the Jazz on Feb. 3. Memphis received Walter Clayton Jr., Kyle Anderson, Taylor Hendricks, Georges Niang and three first-round draft picks.

    Utah coach Will Hardy has only worked with Jackson briefly, but he said the Jazz knew the quality person and player they were getting.

    ‘When we traded for Jaren, obviously there is so much talk about (Jaren) the player,’ Hardy said. ‘And I’m very excited about the player. But what we are trying to build as an organization and a program, Jaren’s character, and who he is as a person, is just as important.

    ‘That has been evident since the day that he (joined the Jazz). He is a high-character guy. He has a good sense of humor. He also has a respect level that comes with him because of how he has played during his career.’

    Letting go of another key member of the Grizzlies’ core was difficult for Memphis general manager Zach Kleiman, but it could be a move that pays dividends.

    ‘We felt good about the return (for Jackson) and we felt it healthier for the organization to turn the page as much as we were able to and be able to build this team with a clear mind as to what we’re trying to achieve going forward, which is pivoting to a younger build,’ Kleiman said. ‘We’re not shying away from that. That’s where this team is.’

    While the Grizzlies adjust to life without Jackson for the first time since he was taken with the No. 4 pick in the 2018 draft, they are hoping to snap a four-game losing streak without star guard Ja Morant.

    Sidelined with a left elbow sprain since Jan. 23, Morant missed the team’s last 11 games and is expected to miss another two weeks. He has only appeared in 20 games because of a variety of injuries.

    With Morant out, guard Ty Jerome recently returned from a right calf injury that had him unavailable from the start of the season. In his six games back, Jerome has averaged 19.7 points in 20.2 minutes.

    Other contributions have come from Jaylen Wells, Cam Spencer and Cedric Coward, who were selected to play in last Friday’s Rising Stars mini-tournament at NBA All-Star Weekend. Coward was withheld from action due to knee soreness.

    Jazz standout Keyonte George missed six of the final seven games before the break due to injuries to each ankle. He is averaging 23.8 points in 48 games.

    Early prenatal care improves the chances of having a healthy pregnancy and baby. But a new federal report shows it’s been on the decline.The share of U.S. births to women who began prenatal care in the first trimester dropped from 78.3% in 2021 to 75.5% in 2024, according to data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday.Meanwhile, starting care later in pregnancy or getting no care at all has been on the rise. Prenatal care beginning in the second trimester rose from 15.4% to 17.3%, and starting care in the third trimester or getting no care went from 6.3% to 7.3%.“We know that early engagement in prenatal care is linked to better overall health outcomes,” said Dr. Clayton Alfonso, an OB-GYN at Duke University in North Carolina. When patients delay medical care during pregnancy, “we’ve missed that window to optimize both fetal and maternal care.”While the trend identified in the report held for nearly all racial and ethnic groups, the decrease in early prenatal care was higher for moms in minority groups. For example, first-trimester care dropped from 69.7% in 2021 to 65.1% in 2024 for Black mothers.     Early prenatal care improves the chances of having a healthy pregnancy and baby. But a new federal report shows it’s been on the decline.

    The share of U.S. births to women who began prenatal care in the first trimester dropped from 78.3% in 2021 to 75.5% in 2024, according to data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday.

    Meanwhile, starting care later in pregnancy or getting no care at all has been on the rise. Prenatal care beginning in the second trimester rose from 15.4% to 17.3%, and starting care in the third trimester or getting no care went from 6.3% to 7.3%.

    “We know that early engagement in prenatal care is linked to better overall health outcomes,” said Dr. Clayton Alfonso, an OB-GYN at Duke University in North Carolina. When patients delay medical care during pregnancy, “we’ve missed that window to optimize both fetal and maternal care.”

    While the trend identified in the report held for nearly all racial and ethnic groups, the decrease in early prenatal care was higher for moms in minority groups. For example, first-trimester care dropped from 69.7% in 2021 to 65.1% in 2024 for Black mothers.   • NASA labels Starliner danger level as Type A, same as Challenger

    KENNEDY SPACE CENTER —  NASA officials labeled the Boeing Starliner saga — which suffered from helium leaks and thruster issues and its crew had to use SpaceX’s Dragon capsule to return to Earth — as the same level of danger as the fatal Challenger mission.

    During Thursday afternoon’s press conference, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman labeled what happened to Boeing’s Starliner capsule as a Type A mishap, where the crew could have been in real danger if things had not gone as they did.

    NASA released a 311-page report on what happened with the Starliner mission.

    A recap of the Starliner mission

    In 2024, Cmdr. Barry “Butch” Wilmore and pilot Sunita “Suni” Williams were members of the Boeing Crew Flight Test as they experimented with Boeing’s experimental Starliner capsule and go to the International Space Station in what was supposed to be a days-long mission.

    However, from trying to launch with liquid helium leaks and thruster issues on the Starliner, the eightish-day mission on the space station turned into a nine-month stay.  

    NASA eventually deemed Calypso, the name of the Starliner capsule, unsafe and returned to Earth without Wilmore and Williams.

    The U.S. space agency already had a plan to bring them home, as Spectrum News was the first to confirm that NASA was considering the use of a SpaceX Dragon capsule for their ride home.  Which was the case.

    They have since retired from NASA.

    Isaacman explains what a Type A mishap is

    During the Thursday afternoon teleconference, Isaacman started off by reading a letter that he sent to NASA employees, which listed the history of Starliner and the issues it faced.

    “While we have identified organizational root causes, the technical investigations to identify proximate (direct) causes for the service module and crew module thruster anomalies remain ongoing. Acknowledging that present-day reality is essential to mission success,” he read off.

    When Starliner was coming in to dock with the International Space Station, five of its thrusters failed and once the system returned, only four came back online. This also resulted in the loss of 6 Degree of Freedom (6DOF) controllers.

    Isaacman stated in the letter that the cause for the failure has not been identified and officials with both Boeing and NASA are still working to determine the cause.

    He also stated in the letter that this resulted in the mission being labeled a serious Type A mishap and originally, it was not declared as such. A Type A mishap is the worst type of accident category that NASA has, which can result in mission failure, resulting in a $2 million or more financial loss, the aircraft or spacecraft being damaged or destroyed and injury or death.  

    This is the same category as the fatal 1986 Challenger space shuttle mission or the 2003 space shuttle Columbia incident.

    During a question-and-answer session, Spectrum News asked Isaacman just how much danger Wilmore and Williams were in.

    “How much danger were they were in? Losing 6doff controllers is a huge deal. I actually want to give a lot of credit, and I mentioned it in my remarks earlier, to the flight controllers that made the decision to kind of challenge some of our flight rules and bring that crew to a safe haven, which is the International Space Station. Had that not taken place, had thrusters not been recovered, it could have very well been a different, different outcome,” he answered.

    He continued to say that once the Starliner returned to Earth, there was another thruster failure, adding, “So, the spaceship was not healthy.”

    He stressed that Starliner will not fly again until everything has been resolved, which means it may not have an uncrewed test launch to the space station in April of this year.

    ‘And we failed them’

    Another thing that was revealed is that while there were mechanical and technical issues, it was the “culture” between NASA and Boeing staff, that created mistrust, Isaacman shared, adding that officials were unprofessional during the situation and worried more about Starliner’s capability than solving the immediate issues.

    NASA Associate Administrator Amit Shastri, who was also with Isaacman during the teleconference, said that the U.S. space agency failed Wilmore and Williams.

    “They have so much grace and they’re so competent, the two of them. And we failed them. The agency failed them. And even though they won’t, they won’t say that, we have to say that, we have to recognize that our responsibility is to them and to all the crews that are coming and to the crews that (are) about to go fly and … our responsibilities to each other, too. We’re a family,” he said.

  • Op-ed: Derek Chen’s early Trump support and America First record speaks for itself

    I’ve known Derek Chen for more than a decade, and I can say without question that he’s one of the truest American patriots I’ve ever met. Back when we were both students at Hope College, a small conservative Christian college in West Michigan, Derek stood out as a real leader.

    He was one of the youngest students on campus, but everyone from professors to business leaders to state politicians knew who he was.     What impressed me most was Derek’s courage and loyalty when times got tough. In the dead of Michigan winter in 2015, during the early stages of the Trump campaign, I watched Derek walk through waist-high snow to knock on doors and put out yard signs for then-candidate Donald J. Trump.

    He believed in the message of putting America First and wasn’t afraid to stand up for it. Derek got straight to work. When he wasn’t walking through the snow, he was driving his Ford F-150 around the state, rallying conservatives and building support for President Trump.

    I’ve seen that same drive in every part of Derek’s life. He works hard, he’s genuine, and he always keeps his word. I know this because I’ve lived my own life by those same values. After college, I had the honor of representing our country as a member of the U.S. National Handball Team, training with Team USA at Auburn University (War Eagle!).

    Today, I am a constitutional and federal attorney. I’ve spent my career defending the rights that make this nation strong. My younger brother now serves our nation as a cadet at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. My family believes deeply in faith, freedom, and service…and so does Derek.

    Derek Chen has been a Trump supporter since day one of his campaign in 2015 and he remains loyal to the America First movement today. Over the years, he’s grown into an experienced,wise, and respected leader. Derek understands what it means to work for the people (not the politicians) and he’s exactly the kind of man Alabama needs as its next State Auditor.   • Report: Kings’ Domantas Sabonis, Zach LaVine have season-ending surgeries

    The Sacramento Kings, losers of 14 straight and at the bottom of the league standings, lost stars Domantas Sabonis and Zach LaVine to season-ending surgeries on Wednesday, ESPN reported.

    Sabonis, a three-time All-Star in the frontcourt, had surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee, ESPN reported. He had returned to action in mid-January after missing 27 games following the mid-November injury.

    The 29-year-old averaged 15.8 points, 11.4 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 29.7 minutes in 19 games (15 starts) this season.

    LaVine, a two-time All-Star guard who turns 31 on March 10, had been in and out of the lineup for 10 games because of a tendon injury in his right hand before selecting surgery.

    He last played on Feb. 6 in a home loss to the Los Angeles Clippers. LaVine averaged a team-high 19.2 points along with 2.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 31.4 minutes in 39 games (37 starts).

    The duo are the highest-paid players for the Kings (12-44), ESPN reported, with LaVine having a $48.9 million player option next season and Sabonis having two years and $94 million remaining on his contract.

    Sacramento hosts the Orlando Magic on Thursday night and a 15th straight loss would set a franchise record for futility. The franchise twice lost 14 games when it was known as the Cincinnati Royals.

    Minnesota selected LaVine with the 13th overall pick of the 2014 NBA Draft out of UCLA.

    LaVine, 30, averages 20.7 points per game for his career, with 4.0 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 32.7 minutes and 1,632 career 3-pointers in 693 regular-season games (602 starts) for the Minnesota Timberwolves (2014-17), Chicago Bulls (2018-25) and Kings. He represented the Bulls at the 2021 and 2022 All-Star Games.

    The Orlando Magic picked Sabonis with the 11th overall pick of the 2016 NBA Draft out of Gonzaga and traded him the same day to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

    For his career, Sabonis averages 16.1 points 10.7 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 30.8 minutes in 665 games (521 starts) for Oklahoma City (2016-17), Indiana Pacers (2017-22) and Kings (2022-present). He was an All-Star in 2020, 2021 and 2023.

    A Delta Air Lines flight from Houston to Atlanta made an emergency landing early Wednesday after a passenger tried to access the cockpit, the pilot told air traffic controllers.Delta flight 2557, a Boeing 717 aircraft, had just taken off from Houston’s Hobby Airport when the pilot declared an emergency. Eight-five passengers and five crew members were on board, according to Delta.“We had a passenger get up and try to access the cockpit,” the pilot can be heard in a radio recording with air traffic control captured by Broadcastify. “Can you coordinate and have security standing by?”After confirming the cockpit was secure, he requested police and paramedics meet the plane when it landed.“(He is) in cuffs in the back of the aircraft, but he did assault another passenger, so we would like that other passenger checked out,” the pilot told air traffic control.In 2025, there were 1,621 unruly passengers reported to the Federal Aviation Administration. So far, in 2026, there have been 126.Wednesday, the plane signaled an emergency using its transponder and landed back at Hobby Airport about 17 minutes after taking off. Emergency vehicles accompanied the plane to the gate.“They are coming to the gate.     The launch window opens from 5 p.m. ET to 9 p.m. ET, which means SpaceX has during this time to send up its Falcon 9.

    The 45th Weather Squadron has given a 95% chance of a good launch forecast, with no concerns about the liftoff, which is a rarity.

    It is not uncommon for the squadron, for example, to report that there is a cumulus cloud rule that goes against the launch.

    Once deployed and in position, they will provide internet service to many places around the Earth.

Law enforcement personnel will remain on campus as a precaution and to provide continued security. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach is on lockdown after a threat was made to the campus. Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood clarified that the situation is a threat, not an active shooter incident.A law enforcement source said the threatening call came in around 8:40 p.m. with the suspect saying, “five minutes away and I’m going to start shooting the campus up.” The potential threat was reported at the Mori Hosseini Student Union on Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Beach Campus, prompting immediate action from Campus Safety and local law enforcement, according to Embry-Riddle. Embry-Riddle sent out a shelter-in-place alert saying, “No matter where you are on campus, you shelter in place.” At this time Daytona Police Department is on the scene, escorting students to their rooms, then searching the campus. WESH 2 spoke with freshman Nick Krasznavolgyi, who said he was leaving the Student Union when he got the campus alert about the threat. “It was pretty nerve-wracking,” he said. “Especially these kind of threats are unfortunately common today, and so I got the notification, my heart instantly dropped to my stomach, and I started hauling back to my dorm. It was a pretty scary experience.”He shared screenshots of the alerts he received Tuesday night. Multiple encouraging students to continue sheltering in place until given the all clear. The Daytona Beach PD and the FBI are actively investigating the call.
