    Astros name Josh Hader closer, Ryan Pressly setup man

    New Houston Astros manager Joe Espada announced Wednesday that newly acquired Josh Hader will be the team’s closer this season, bumping Ryan Pressly to a setup role.

    Espada made the announcement on the first day of Houston’s spring training workouts.

    The Astros last month signed Hader to the second-richest contract in MLB history for a closer, a five-year deal worth $95 million. Edwin Diaz of the New York Mets received a five-year, $102 million deal after the 2022 season.

    Pressly, a two-time All-Star, earned 102 saves for the Astros the past four seasons, one of only six relievers to compile at least 100 saves since 2020.

    Espada said he sat down with both players to talk over his decision.

    “They’ve both been successful. I feel more comfortable giving Hader that opportunity since he’s shown his ability to do it,” Espada told reporters. “Same as Pressly. It’s just Pressly won’t pitch the ninth inning. … I don’t want to put words in Pressly’s mouth, but everything I got from him was that he’s on board.”

    Hader turns 30 on April 7; Pressly is 35.

    Hader recorded 33 saves and a 1.28 ERA in 61 relief appearances for the San Diego Padres last season. The left-hander is 20-21 with 165 saves and a 2.50 ERA in 349 career games (no starts) for the Milwaukee Brewers (2017-22) and Padres (2022-23).

    He received the National League’s Trevor Hoffman Reliever of the Year award in 2018, 2019 and 2021.

    Pressly has 108 career saves, all but one of those with the Astros, who acquired him from the Minnesota Twins in July 2018. He has 14 career saves in 14 chances in the postseason, including two to help the Astros win the 2022 World Series. He will make $14 million this season with a vesting option for 2025, which includes a $2 million buyout, according to Spotrac.

    Hader said he and Pressly spoke after his signing was announced.

    “The goal is to build that relationship and win ballgames,” he said. “A lot of things can get stirred up on the outside and paint a picture that’s not it. But for him and I, we’ve had a great relationship so far and [we] continue to build off that.”

    WASHINGTON — Two tribal colleges in northern Minnesota are receiving millions in funding to expand their science, technology, engineering and mathematics programs.

    On Wednesday, U.S. Sens. Tina Smith and Amy Klobuchar, both Democrats from Minnesota, announced STEM expansion funding for White Earth Tribal and Community College and Red Lake Nation College. The funding comes from the National Science Foundation.

    Smith, a member of the Senate Indian Affairs and Education committees, says the demand for STEM-trained employees has soared, which highlights the importance of education in those fields.

    “This funding will provide accessible pathways for Native students to pursue higher education and serve their communities — all while integrating Tribal cultural heritage and roots into their curriculum,” Smith said. 

    Both colleges will receive $2.5 million.

    White Earth’s college will be using the funding to begin offering an associate’s degree in natural sciences, with coursework that includes biology, chemistry and physics. Tribal cultural heritage will also be integrated in the curriculum. 

    Red Lake Nation College will focus on expanding its curriculum in social and behavioral sciences with coursework rooted in the Ojibwe language and culture.

    Craving delicious pizza, with not only tried and true standards but also innovative pie choices? We talked to Jill Murray, co-owner of Arturo’s Pizza in Old Town Minneapolis about the history of their restaurant, family dining legacies and some not-to-miss choices.     Q:  Facebook tells us that Arturo’s Pizza was founded in 2021. How did you decide to open a pizza restaurant? Who is the restaurant named for?

    A:  Our family has looked for opportunities to diversify throughout our years in the restaurant industry. We chose pizza because of its mass appeal – everyone loves pizza! We like to work with approachable and familiar food items and high-quality ingredients. It has been a great experience creating with new flavors and products. Arturo’s is named in homage to our grandfather, one of the founders of Murray’s.

    Q:  I did hear that you’re a member of a Minneapolis dining dynasty. Please tell us more.

    A:  We (James, Tim and Jill Murray) are part of the Murray family. Our grandparents were the founders of Murray’s Steakhouse in downtown Minneapolis, now in its 78th year of operation. Our late father, Patrick, was their only child and carried the restaurant through the second generation. He was at Murray’s over 50 years working and teaching his children the business. The three of us manage Murray’s, and along with our sisters, are the current owners. 

    Q:  What are the most popular items on the menu? What should we try if we’re first timers at Arturo’s Pizza?

    A:  The most popular items on the menu are our specialty pizzas – you really can’t go wrong with choosing any of them. The Arturo’s Special highlights our house-made sausage, pepperoni, olives, onion, red pepper and fresh herbs. On the simpler side our Original is a lovely blend of mozzarella, Fontina, Parmesan and Pecorino cheeses, topped with freshly chopped herbs. Our cheese bread and spinach & artichoke dip with grilled bread appetizers are also guest favorites.

    Mushroom Goat Cheese Pizza

    If you are coming for the first time, I would recommend one of the previously mentioned pizzas, or something on the specialty pizza menu with flavors you like. One of my favorites is the Mushroom Goat Cheese pizza that has an Alfredo base, roasted garlic and an Italian burnt honey drizzle.

    Arturo’s Original PizzaQ:  Ok, those pizzas sound amazing! I noticed another pizza on the menu – please tell us more about the Pickle Pastrami pizza.

    A:  Our Pickle Pastrami pizza is a must try that celebrates the winning flavor combination of pickles, cream cheese, and pastrami. We do it on an Alfredo base with mozzarella cheese in addition to the cream cheese, pickles and pastrami. I think many people our age grew up enjoying this in appetizer form where the pickle was slathered in cream cheese, wrapped in ham and sliced. Pickles on pizza are very hot right now, and for good reason, they fit right in.

    Q:  Do you serve pizza slices?

    A:  We serve plain cheese, sausage and pepperoni slices Tuesday-Sunday. We have a great 2 slices for $10 special that includes a soda.

    A man was fatally shot early Wednesday in north Minneapolis and police are looking for the shooter.

    Officers went to the intersection of W. Broadway and Emerson Avenue N. shortly after 1 a.m. and found the victim. The man, who died at the scene, has not been identified, said police spokesman Sgt. Garrett Parten.

    No arrests have been made.

    Police have not released any other information about the incident.

    MINNEAPOLIS — The State of Minnesota stores and protects data on some six million residents, and that’s only one cache of sensitive information under the close watch of the Minnesota Department of Information Technology (MNIT).

    “It’s everything from highways and highway traffic control systems, we run the zoo. We run everything in between,” Steve Israel, Chief Security Officer at MNIT, explained to WCCO Investigates. “If there’s any large internet outage – you’ve probably experienced that at home, what happens when you lose access to web – imagine that on a large scale basis.”

    Those worst-case scenarios threaten all kinds of critical infrastructure, from highways to hospitals to communications to finance. State lawmakers recently earmarked an extra $32 million to MNIT’s budget specifically to bolster cyber defenses.

    MNIT last year also rolled out the first statewide cybersecurity plan, which covers more than 3,000 government entities.

    “I’ll say I think we’re doing a lot of the right things,” Israel added. “Many of the cyber attacks – hackers are using compromised machines they’re stealing from people in day to day businesses.”

    State officials reported more than 1,000 security incidents last year, hitting schools, universities, and government offices. Hospitals and health clinics have also been on the defensive.

    Yan Kravchenko, Director of Core Technology and Information Security at Hennepin Healthcare, said his team manages more than 50,000 devices.

    “Quite literally every aspect of health care at this point has some technology component to it, which is to say nothing of all the medical devices that we rely on every single day,” he added. “An attacker has to be right once, but someone responsible for defending our systems we have to be right 100% of the time. We have to always be prepared. It never stops.”

    Kravchenko’s team – and budget – have also grown, but he echoed state officials in imploring everyone to strengthen their own cyber security at home.

    “The hardest part about this is as damaging as these attacks are, the reality is 90% of them are easily preventable,” Kravchanko lamented. “In security we have a saying that the biggest security vulnerability is somewhere between the keyboard and the chair.”

    Federal cyber officials also offer these four critical steps everyone can take to protect themselves online:

    1. Protect your computer by using security software. Set the software to update automatically so it can deal with any new security threats.
    2. Protect your mobile phone by setting software to update automatically. These updates could give you critical protection against security threats.
    3. Protect your accounts by using multi-factor authentication. Some accounts offer extra security by requiring two or more credentials to log in to your account. This is called multi-factor authentication. The additional credentials you need to log in to your account fall into two categories: Something you have — like a passcode you get via an authentication app or a security key. The other category is something you are — like a scan of your fingerprint, your retina, or your face. Multi-factor authentication makes it harder for scammers to log in to your accounts if they do get your username and password.
    4. Protect your data by backing it up. Back up your data and make sure those backups aren’t connected to your home network. You can copy your computer files to an external hard drive or cloud storage. Back up the data on your phone, too.

    Hundreds of educators gathered before the Minneapolis Public Schools board meeting Tuesday to rally for higher wages for teachers and support staff working in the district — nearly two years after the city’s teachers went on strike.

    The teachers chapter of the Minneapolis Federation of Teachers has held 11 negotiation sessions with the district and last month requested a state mediator in its contract negotiations. The previous contract expired at the end of June.

    The union is asking for an 8.5% salary increase for teachers in the first year of the next contract and 7.5% in the second — raises that its leaders say will stabilize staff turnover. But district leaders are warning of a fiscal crisis and a $121 million hole in the general fund when one-time pandemic relief funds dry up in the fall.

    Union leaders said they’d hoped to wrap up negotiations before Lisa Sayles-Adams became the district’s new superintendent last week. Tuesday marked Sayles-Adams’ first school board meeting. As she shared about her first week in the district, a group of educators outside the board room (which was at capacity) continued yelling chants, including “What do we want? A contract! When do we want it? Now!”

    Teachers contracts across the state have taken longer to settle this year and more districts than usual have turned to help from a state mediator.

    The St. Paul Federation of Educators, the union representing teachers in St. Paul Public Schools, is set to vote Thursday night on whether to authorize a strike after months of negotiations. Its members are also pushing for higher wages and increased mental health support in schools.

    Even if members vote to approve a strike, union leaders would still need to decide that a strike was necessary, set a date and notify the district. State law requires the union to give the district at least 10 days’ notice before the first day of the strike.

    Golden State Warriors will target coach Steve Kerr’s 500th career coaching win on Wednesday when they take a red-hot streak into a visit from the Los Angeles Clippers in San Francisco.

    Kerr was credited with win No. 499 on Monday night in an unusual fashion — by watching from nearly 6,000 milesaway after attending the funeral of former Warriors assistant coach Dejan Milojevic in Serbia.

    Kenny Atkinson moved to the head of the bench and orchestrated one of Golden State’s best team efforts, with eight players scoring in double figures in a 129-107 road win over the Utah Jazz.

    Atkinson acknowledged afterward that this is an emotional stretch for the Warriors, who were in Salt Lake City last month when Milojevic suffered a heart attack during a team dinner. The game that night was postponed and has been rescheduled for Thursday, when the Warriors make a second trip to Utah in four days.

    “Winning helps,” Atkinson said of dealing with the emotions. “When you’re starting to go on a little bit of a win streak, you want more. So there’s that enthusiasm. We also know we’re behind (in the standings). So there’s a little bit of an edge to us. A positive edge.”

    The win pushed Kerr within one of becoming the 37th coach in NBA history with 500 victories. The New York Knicks’ Tom Thibodeau became the 36th earlier this season.

    The Warriors have won five in a row heading into the finale of their four-game season series with the Pacific Division-leading Clippers, who have prevailed in two of the first three meetings between the teams. The home team has gone 3-0 so far, but with no win coming by more than eight points.

    Los Angeles had its eye on finishing the first half with the best record in the Western Conference before falling 121-100 at home to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday. The Clippers still have a healthy lead in the Pacific Division, where the Warriors are dueling the Los Angeles Lakers for last place.

    The Clippers shot just 40.5 percent from the floor against Minnesota in the loss, which was just their third in the past 13 games. Kawhi Leonard, one of the few Los Angeles players who didn’t struggle offensively on an 8-for-17, 18-point night, chose to focus on the big picture afterward.

    “It’s important just to get better and get every win,” he said. “If it seems like we’re trending up with our play, then that’s what matters and that’s the carryover you need into the playoffs.”

    Shooting accuracy has been the difference in the first three Warriors-Clippers contests, with Golden State holding a 50 percent to 44.2 percent advantage in its home win before Los Angeles shot 48.9 and 50.6 percent in its home games, bettering the visitors’ marks of 44.2 and 43.5 percent, respectively.

    The Clippers rank among the NBA leaders in field-goal percentage for the season at 49.3 percent. But the Warriors have scorched the nets to the tune of 48.9 percent overall and 41.8 percent from 3-point range during their winning streak.

    One other streak will be on the line on Wednesday if Golden State’s Gary Payton II takes the court for the third consecutive time since missing 16 straight games with a strained left hamstring. Payton has yet to miss a shot since his return, going 5-for-5 against the Phoenix Suns on Saturday, then 4-for-4 at Utah. He made his only 3-point attempt in each game.

    Known for his big personality, story-telling skills and irresistible French accent, Paradeise was a well-known force in the local hospitality industry.

    He began his career as the front office shift manager at a five-star hotel and resort in Scottsdale, Arizona, after moving to the U.S. from Paris and culminates it as the opening GM for the new iteration of a Vincent Francoual restaurant, Chloe by Vincent.

    “We were fortunate to be able to work with Francois before we opened to help us set up systems and hire good people and to share his showmanship style of making guests feel welcome and special,” said Matthew Monroe, CEO of Restore Restaurant Holdings, which owns the restaurant along with Erik Forsberg’s French Toast.

    Paradeise and his wife of 44 years, Nancy, are moving to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to be closer to grandchildren.

    Over the years, Paradeise has worked with Parasole Restaurants, where he was the GM of a number of their iconic restaurants, including Manny’s, Figlio and Good Earth. He was hired as the director of operations for the first Buca di Beppo restaurant and opened seven additional stores, including in Milwaukee; Palo Alto, California; Seattle; and Chicago.

    He also worked with Wayne Kostroski at Cuisine Concepts, at Tejas, Bar Abeline and Franklin Street Bakery.

    “I am grateful for all my coworkers as well as the company officers and owners,” Paradeise said. “I cherish all the memories with my teams as we dealt with both challenges and successes.”

    Minnesota will always have a place in his heart, but “now is as good a time as ever to spice up our lives.” And what better place to find that spice than in the southwest, where he started his culinary journey.

    I was photographing the city sky-scape of downtown Minneapolis two Friday nights ago from the Stone Arch Bridge with four other photographers as part of a night sky workshop. Shortly before we were scheduled to leave I turned around, looked east and down at the river. The river was glowing red, a reflection from the 35W Bridge. Even though we were leaving for another location I knew I had to take the time to photograph this scene.

    Fresh off a dynamic performance in a Western Conference showdown, the Minnesota Timberwolves look to avoid a letdown when they visit the struggling Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday night.

    The contest will be the first of two games between the Timberwolves and Trail Blazers. The Thursday rematchalso will be in Portland, the final game before the All-Star break for both clubs.

    The Timberwolves led by as many as 24 on Monday night while producing an impressive 121-100 road victory over the Los Angeles Clippers in a battle for first place in the West.

    However, the Timberwolves weren’t so powerful in the first half and trailed by four at the break. Then Minnesota outscored the Clippers 72-47 in the second half, including 40-19 in the third quarter.

    “I didn’t think we brought enough force and physicality to the game in the first half,” Timberwolves coach Chris Finch said. “I thought we played good basketball, but there were a bunch of plays where they were way more physical than we were. They were hitting first and we were getting out of the way at times, and that’s not what we do.”

    Karl-Anthony Towns had 24 points and Anthony Edwards contributed 23 points, eight assists and seven rebounds as Minnesota improved to 2-1 on a five-game road trip. Rudy Gobert added 17 points and 10 rebounds for his 36th double-double of the season.

    “I’m proud of the way we came out tonight and now we’ll see if we can handle success and we’re right back at it tomorrow,” Gobert said postgame.

    The Trail Blazers have lost four straight as they enter the third game of a seven-game homestand.

    Portland has dealt with a revolving door of injuries but is expected to get high-scoring guard Anfernee Simons (sprained left ankle) back from a one-game absence.

    Simons had 29 points in 25 minutes when he was injured with five minutes left in the third quarter against the NBA-worst Detroit Pistons on Thursday. The Trail Blazers led by 23 points at the time and ended up losing 128-122 in overtime.

    Simons is averaging 23.4 points but has played in just 29 of Portland’s 52 games. The longest absence was 18 games due to a thumb injury sustained in the season opener.

    While Simons should be on the court Tuesday, rookie point guard Scoot Henderson (sprained left foot) is questionable. He missed the Detroit game and Portland’s 93-84 home loss against the New Orleans Pelicans on Saturday.

    Malcolm Brogdon (elbow) will miss at least two weeks, while fellow guard Shaedon Sharpe underwent abdominal surgery last week and will be sidelined for a minimum of six weeks.

    Forward Jabari Walker said the constant barrage of injuries is taking its toll on the Trail Blazers.

    “Yeah, it’s tough just because we want to find a rhythm and sometimes you don’t know who is playing up until the game,” Walker said. “It’s tough for the team. It’s tough for us to rely on certain things.”

    Standout forward Jerami Grant is averaging 28.4 points over his past five appearances, including a career-high 49 against the Pistons.

    Grant scored 24 against the Pelicans, but the offense struggled during the low-scoring game. Portland didn’t manage more than 24 points in any quarter.

    “I thought our defense was incredible the whole game,” Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups said. “Our defense was lights out. That’s one of the better offensive teams in the league, and we held them to 93 points. We just weren’t able to manufacture points.”

    The Timberwolves recorded a 116-93 home win over the Trail Blazers on Jan. 12. Gobert had 24 points and 17 rebounds and Towns added 23 points. Walker paced Portland with 17 points and 13 boards.

    NEW YORK — One person was killed and five others were injured in shooting on a subway platform in the Bronx on Monday afternoon

    It happened just after 4:30 p.m. on the 4 train platform at the Mount Eden subway station on Jerome Avenue.

    The search is on for at least one suspect, CBS New York’s Naveen Dhaliwal reported. So far, no arrests have been made.

    Police sources said one of the victims, a 34-year-old man who was believed to be an innocent bystander, was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

    In addition, a 28-year-old man was shot in the right arm, a 29-year-old woman was shot in the face and neck, a 15-year-old male was shot in the thigh and ear, a 14-year-old female suffered a gunshot wound to foot, and a 71-year-old male was also wounded. All of the injured were listed in stable condition at various hospitals.

    “Our hearts go out to the victims, for the five people who are injured and also the person whose life was lost,” MTA CEO Janno Lieber said.

    Police sources said the incident is believed to have started as a fight aboard the northbound 4 train which then spilled out onto the platform, adding some of the victims were innocent bystanders who were standing on the platform when the shots were fired.

    “As train pulled into the Mount Eden station, the doors opened up and at least one of the individuals in that group or in the two groups took out a gun and fired shots, and more shots were fired while on the platform and that’s when and where our victims were shot,” NYPD Chief of Transit Michael Kemper said.

    Police said they are reviewing surveillance video from cameras on the platform.

    Witnesses said there were about a dozen people on the platform when the shots rang out, including children.

    “I heard gunshots, running, shooting, like, maybe, six times, five, six times. I heard two child screaming. And then, when I saw the train coming, that’s when I ran downstairs, because there was too many noise,” the witness said.

    “It sounded like firecrackers, like boom, boom, boom, like real loud,” witness Efrain Feliciano said.

    “A lot of people going down … running,” Yanesa Ortega said.

    Ortega said she saw EMS crews scrambling to help those injured.

    “We see that one woman was hit here, a lot of blood. They were doing the CPR,” she said. “They was giving the CPR to one boy.”

    The mayor’s office does not believe the shooting was a random attack. 

    Video from the scene showed numerous police and emergency personnel at the station.

    Construction progressed throughout winter on new Northeast Minneapolis riverfront park – on track to open in fall 2024

    Lots of progress has been made over the winter on Graco Park, a new riverfront park just north of the Plymouth Avenue Bridge in Northeast Minneapolis.

    Construction has been focused on the new park building, which is expected to be complete in 2024. The building’s exterior shell and roof framing are complete, its concrete floor has been poured, and work on mechanical and electrical systems is underway. Windows are scheduled to be installed in March, then work on finishing the building exterior will resume.

    Later this spring, work on the building will shift to its interior, and construction of the outdoor park elements, like landscaping and pathways, will pick up. The park is on track to open in fall 2024.

    Rosemount’s girls hockey roster shows several players more likely to score the winning goal than Maggie Erickson.

    But there she was Saturday, weaving through the defense and tucking in a backhand with 49 seconds left in overtime to give fourth-seeded Rosemount a 4-3 victory over top-seeded Lakeville North in the semifinals of Class 2A, Section 3 at Ames Arena.

    Erickson knocked down a stretch pass from just outside the blue line, hesitated before entering the offensive zone to let her teammates get onside and went to work.

    “It was an unbelievable goal,” Rosemount head coach Kyle Finn said. “It was a great individual effort. Her offensive game has been developing all year.”

    Four teammates have scored more goals this season than Erickson’s four.

    “We’ve been working all year to develop our secondary scoring, and for Maggie to score a goal like that was huge,” Finn said.

    The Irish (13-9-5) trailed 3-1 in the first minute of the second period. They cut the deficit to one with 6:15 remaining in the second period on an unassisted goal by Cece Hanson, and Annalee Holzer tied it 3-3 on a power-play goal with 6:15 left in regulation. That set up Erickson’s winner.

    “We have a phenomenal leadership group,” Finn said. “[The leaders] keep us going in the right mindset and helped keep us going in the right direction. There was no panic. We had a lot of confidence that we could still win the game.”

    Lakeville North, 22-4-1 and ranked ninth in Class 2A, had a 44-21 edge in shots on goal, including an 18-5 advantage in the third period. Irish goaltender Natalie Kendhammer totaled 41 saves, including 22 in in the third period and overtime.

    “Natalie came up huge for us,” Finn said. “She made some huge saves for us in the third when it was a close game. She was an important part of our state tournament run last year.”

    Northfield advances in girls hockey

    The Northfield girls hockey team preached stopping at the front of the net. Sophomore Mia Miller listened and was rewarded with the tying and winning goals when the top-seeded Raiders got past fifth-seeded Owatonna 2-1 in overtime in a semifinal of the Class 2A, Section 1 tournament at Northfield Ice Arena.

    Miller scored her goals in similar fashion. She went to the net and tapped in a loose puck off a scrum in the crease.

    “All week we worked on stopping at the net,” Raiders coach Paige Haley said. “I pointed her out a few times. It was fitting that she was the one to score [those goals].”

    Northfield, 26-1 and ranked eighth in Class 2A, fell behind 1-0 on a similar play. Averi Vetsch knocked in a loose puck for Owatonna (14-12-1) during a scrum with 5:05 left in the second period.

    It took until the 16-minute mark for the Raiders to get one past Huskies goaltender Leah Spencer.

    “The whole game we said it was going to come,” Haley said. “As it got late, there was panic, but [we have] been excellent at playing the whole game.”

    Emerson Garlie assisted on both of Miller’s goals, and Macy Mueller had 32 saves for the Raiders.

    Hill-Murray survives in boys hockey

    Hill-Murray’s boys hockey team fended off Class 2A, No. 10 St. Thomas Academy for a 2-1 overtime victory Saturday at St. Thomas Ice Arena to complete a season sweep of the Cadets. The Pioneers defeated St. Thomas Academy 5-2 at home on Jan. 10.

    Goaltender Andrew Lane stopped 19 of 20 shots in the third period Saturday. He finished with 40 saves.

    “He played really well,” Pioneers coach Bill Lechner said. “We knew they were going to come on strong and push back in the third. They play well on their rink. They came on and put us on defense. It was a battle.”

    Chaz Lentz tipped a shot from Boden Sampair 3:08 into overtime for the winning goal.

    The Pioneers (13-8-2) had to kill off a penalty that carried over into overtime before they could get their offense going. The Pioneers were credited with just two shots in the third period but doubled that number in the few minutes played in overtime before Lentz’s goal beat the Cadets (14-8-2).

    “It got chaotic in the third,” Lechner said. “It was a physical third period. It wasn’t dirty or cheap. There were some big hits and the energy picked up. We had to calm the kids down. It did come unraveled a bit, but it was clean.”

    Communities reaching out to Spanish-speaking farmers

    A rural advocacy group has invested in reaching out to Spanish-speaking farmers in Iowa – a population that has grown dramatically.

    There has been an uptick in Spanish speaking farm-related events around the state, and Practical Farmers of Iowa has hired a full time person to be a liaison between Spanish speakers and Iowa’s ag-dominant rural communities.

    PFI’s Senior Latino Engagement Coordinator, Valeria Cano Camacho, said she’s working to break down barriers that exist for Latinos in those communities.

    “Whether that be language, or immigration status,” said Cano Camacho, “all these things that stop people from trying to accomplish their farming dreams.”

    The latest state data show more than 216,000 Iowans identify as Latino, a 162 percent increase since 2000.

    The Latino population is projected to grow to well over a half million by 2050. The numbers don’t break down what percentage of this population speaks only Spanish.

    Cano Camacho said Spanish speaking farmers face a series of challenges in a predominantly white and English-speaking state like Iowa, but she said the number one request she gets is for help with land access.

    So, PFI offers Spanish speakers access to what are known as “land access navigators,” who offer legal support to people who have found a place to farm.

    “The language in the lease can be really complicated,” said Cano Camacho. “All the way up to support – if you would like having a lawyer review the material for you, that is a service that PFI offers for free for these farmers.”

    Cano Camacho said the service has been in such high demand, PFI is hiring a full-time land access navigator to help.
