washington – In an election year beset with uncertainties, one thing is clear: Americans find a November rematch between U.S. President Joe Biden and his leading Republican challenger, former U.S. President Donald Trump, even less appealing than the first time around in 2020.
A January Reuters/Ipsos poll showed most Americans do not want Biden and Trump to run again and that they are tired of seeing the same candidates in presidential elections.
Trump is besieged by legal woes, and both he and Biden are seen as too old, although polls show more Americans worry about Biden, who would be 81 on Election Day, than Trump, who would be 78.
So, why are Americans in this predicament?
The short answer, according to analysts, is that both Biden and Trump want another term, and they operate in a political system geared to favor incumbents.
Trump wants four more years
A second term could deliver vindication for Trump who since losing to Biden in 2020 has pushed baseless claims that the election was stolen, said Thomas Schwartz, a presidential historian with Vanderbilt University.
Trump’s critics accuse him of running not for the good of the country but to stay out of prison, something he denies. Trump faces 91 criminal charges under four indictments: for falsifying his business records in New York, for withholding classified federal government documents in Florida, and for attempting to overturn the 2020 election in two separate cases in Washington and the state of Georgia.
These indictments have not hurt his poll numbers, said Clifford Young, president of Ipsos Public Affairs in the U.S.
‘Trump has a very strong connection with his base,’ Young told VOA. ‘It’s almost unbreakable.’
Revisiting grievances that resonate with MAGA (Make America Great Again) Republicans, Trump dominated the primaries – the statewide voting processes in which voters select a party’s nominee who will compete in the general election – held so far. He is expected to handily win the rest, capitalizing on a system that amplifies the most ideologically fervent voices of the electorate.
This is particularly true in states with ‘closed’ primaries where voters must register with a party before voting. The process shuts out independent and unaffiliated voters, and candidates win by taking on the most ideologically extreme positions.
‘You have an overwhelming vote for Donald Trump among Republican primary voters,’ Schwartz told VOA.
But even ‘open’ primaries, where registered voters regardless of their political affiliation can vote for any candidate, reflect only a small share of the electorate. In U.S. elections since 2000, the average turnout rate for primary elections is 27% of registered voters, compared to 60.5% for general elections.
Biden wants four more years
Like any incumbent American president, Biden sees a second term as a vindication of his achievements, Schwartz said.
Biden secured a series of legislative wins, led the Western response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and presided over an economy where recession fears have eased, growth and job gains are beating expectations, and inflation is cooling.
‘It is possible for Joe Biden to declare himself a successful one-term president and step aside. He just doesn’t want to,’ Schwartz noted, citing Harry Truman and Lyndon Johnson who decided not to run again in March of 1952 and 1968 respectively. ‘And the party is not strong enough to tell him to do so.’
Democrats see Biden as the best barricade against their biggest fear – another Trump administration, Schwartz said. Had Trump not been in the race, he added, they would have been more willing to challenge Biden.
‘What I’m hearing is, we’re riding with Biden,’ said Democratic strategist Corryn Grace Freeman.
This despite progressives’ frustration with the president’s inability to fully cancel student loan debt and his response to the Israel-Hamas war, she told VOA.
‘There are many people that cannot support this president, who also don’t like Donald Trump, who just feel like the Democratic Party consistently fails us,’ she said, adding that support from Blacks and Latinos ‘is beginning to dwindle because of how this president has shown up.’
Democrats are now stuck in an extraordinarily high-risk gamble where a potential health or other age-related incident could further discourage voters, Schwartz warned. But despite Biden’s weak poll numbers and questions about his age, there is no Plan B for Democrats.
‘No viable alternative got into the race,’ said Elaine Kamarck, senior fellow in Governance Studies and the director of the Center for Effective Public Management at Brookings Institution. ‘You can’t beat something with nothing,’ she told VOA.
This notion was put to the test early, during the January New Hampshire primary that Biden skipped because he had promised South Carolina Democrats that their state would host the first primary. The president was not on the New Hampshire primary ballot, but the majority of voters there wrote in his name, delivering his overwhelming victory over two longshot challengers, Minnesota Congressman Dean Phillips and self-help author Marianne Williamson, who were on the ballot.
System favors incumbents
Both essentially running as incumbents, Biden and Trump have huge influence over their party apparatus and resources. They also benefit from a primary system where a small number of states have outsized influence and candidate choices are locked in far in advance of the election, even if they become less popular.
The latter feature of the system is the unintended result of efforts to fix the former, said Geoffrey Cowan, a professor at the University of Southern California.
During the 1968 Democratic National Convention, Cowan pushed for reform to ensure voters in all 50 states are represented, replacing a system where fewer than 20 states held primary elections and caucuses and presidential nominees were mostly selected by party leaders during their convention.
‘I put together this commission which said that all delegates to the 1972 convention would have to be picked through a process open to full public participation in the calendar year of the election,’ Cowan told VOA.
In mandating that primaries are held the same year, the commission did not anticipate that state rules would evolve to lock in candidates early, even if voters’ attitudes about them change, Cowan said.
Most states now require candidates who want to run in a party’s primary to register by the first week of election year. States also race to hold their primaries as early as possible, a process known as frontloading.
This means by the third week of February, it would be difficult for a candidate to launch a campaign against Biden or Trump even though there are still more than 250 days to the election. Primaries have been held in critical states such as New Hampshire, Nevada, and South Carolina, and candidacy filing deadlines have passed in many others.
Which means, unless one of them drops out and the party scrambles to nominate a replacement during the convention, Americans are stuck with either Trump, who will be the Republican nominee by championing MAGA grievances, or Biden, because he is seen as the only one who can beat Trump.
ELY, Minn. — Every year, biologists take flight to count moose in Minnesota.
They’re in the process of doing it right now in the Superior National Forest near Ely.
WCCO wondered how the state’s largest wild animal is faring in such an usual winter. As Erin Hassanzadeh uncovered in this Next Weather Investigation, it’s giving them a run for their money — for a population that’s already a fraction of what it once was.
On the fringes of Minnesota’s North Woods, Department of Natural Resources helicopters have a bird’s eye view where you can see moose clipping through the forest.
“You get a whole different perspective on the landscape,” said Mike Schrage, a Fond du Lac wildlife biologist.
The state keeps tabs on the population and sets hunting quotas for tribes by doing its annual survey. Crews fly in helicopters estimating moose populations.
Collar trackers reveal how moose territory is evolving, something biologists are watching closely as the population dropped nearly 60% since 2009, from 7,840 in 2009 to 3,290 in 2023. Full population numbers from 2005-2023 can be found by clicking here.
WCCO asked if experts know why.
“A lot of theories and some data,” said Schrage.
These days, most Minnesota moose call the Arrowhead region home. But it wasn’t always that way.
WCCO
Four thousand moose used to live in northwestern Minnesota in the ’80s. Now, it’s fewer than 100.
“That rate of decline for a population that large is really unprecedented,” said DNR Wildlife Health Program Director Michelle Carstensen.
This year, weather is getting in the way of the annual survey.
“It’s been hard. The warmer conditions, the low ceilings, foggy, misty has made it challenging to find flyable days this year,” said Schrage, who is part of the crew doing the assessment.
Our lack of snow isn’t helping either.
“It makes the moose pop out better when there’s a consistent white background,” said Schrage.
And it’s not just a setback for researchers. It’s a huge problem for moose, too. They can withstand minus 70 degree temps.
“If moose are getting heat stress, they’re probably not eating like they should,” said Schrage “Just like you and I, we don’t feel like going out for a big meal on a hot day.”
What’s considered a hot day for a moose, you ask?
“Right around 20 degrees Fahrenheit,” said Schrage.
WCCO’s NEXT Weather team says Ely has had 65 days above that from Dec. 1 to Feb. 22.
Less snow also means better tick survival rates. They can swarm moose by the tens of thousands. The blood loss, with other factors, can be deadly or at least make it harder to produce viable calves. Pair that with brain worm concerns spread from a thriving whitetail deer population and you start to get the picture.
“So climate has these indirect effects as well as some direct effects that we’re just beginning to understand,” said Carstensen.
To do that, researchers put temperature sensors in moose. They ingest them and the sensors live in their stomach and provide five years of data
“What we observed was temperatures that were above normal for sustained amount of times and we believe that might be impacting their survival over the course of the next year,” said Carstensen.
Global warming could also be pushing the moose north in search of cooler temperatures.
There’s disease, predators and loss of habitat, but there are also efforts to make Minnesota hospitable to moose again.
“We’re trying to make sure we understand what quality habitat is for moose. So we hope to grow moose in Minnesota,” said Carstensen.
“Moose do well in some kinds of forests but that’s not the case for other kinds of animals and so you try to balance the two out there,” said Schrage.
WCCO found a stretch of the Superior National Forest that was scorched by the Greenwood Fire in 2021. It doesn’t look very picturesque to the news crew on the ground, but to a moose, it’s an ideal setting for grazing. They prefer new growth and the vegetation that grows right after wildfires, logging or severe weather blowdowns.
“Minnesotans identify with moose,” said Carstensen.
And despite the threat we all face in this warming climate, the work will continue to hold on to the natural wonders we’re lucky to have and to build a new future where our largest wild animal thrives.
“It’s part of our identity in northern Minnesota,” said Schrage. “It’s part of who we are up here.”

Picketers huddled Thursday on 3rd Avenue S. across the street from the Minneapolis Institute of Art, waving signs that read, “Mia for the People,” “Where Are Your Native Employees?” and other messages. Protesters wore pins that read “What About Bob?”
The picketing was part of general anger about working conditions at Mia and the firing of Mia employee Bob Cozzolino, the former Patrick and Aimee Butler Curator of Paintings who is known for championing underrepresented artists.
His firing was the first of a high-profile curator, but he and the OPEIU Local 12 are saying it’s part of a bigger trend.
“There were some things that I experienced that lots of other people at Mia experienced, including being marginalized for speaking up for equity issues,” Cozzolino said.
He said that this work, which started in 2016, became minimized under Mia’s director, Katherine Luber.
“People who were doing equity work were considered activists or radical, instead of how the culture of the field should be,” he said.
Luber, who came to Minneapolis after eight years at the San Antonio Museum of Art, is the museum’s 12th director and second woman in the post. She described a very different picture, particularly in terms of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), as well as changes made since she arrived at the museum, including hiring Virajita Singh as its first chief diversity and inclusion officer.
“I think it’s unfortunate that, for whatever reason, that termination has been conflated with allegations about the lack of DEI work here at Mia or that it stopped in 2020,” Luber said. “And that is, like, so not true.”
Cozzolino’s firing has caused outrage throughout the art community. More than 450 art community members have signed an open letter of support. Former Mia employees have been anonymously speaking out on the Instagram account @reimagine_mia.
“It’s performative DEAI theater, but behind the scenes Mia is making it a toxic environment for people of color,” OPEIU representative Cesar Montufar said.
In Cozzolino’s termination letter from Mia, Deputy Director and Chief Curator Matthew Welch said Cozzolino was fired because he “repeatedly failed to follow Mia’s established protocol for coordinating its communications with donors — in this case for a key donor. … Mia also requires that curators not pursue acquisitions with [a donor’s] support until after the Mia internal group vetted them.”
Cozzolino said he saw it differently.
“What Mia is saying is cause, is just the normal way curators interact with collectors, and how we cultivate beneficial and productive relationships with collectors,” he said.
The union said his firing was not because of “mishandling communications with a donor,” but rather it was symptomatic of changes at Mia under Luber.
Anniessa Antar worked as an activation specialist at Mia from 2019 to 2021 and in a seasonal role as a Museum as Site for Social Action coordinator from 2017 to 2019.
“I stopped working there in 2021 because it was no longer possible for me to do the level and depth of work that I was aiming to do, [inviting] new audiences into the museum,” Antar said. “I made it a point to collaborate with artists and community partners on inclusive programming to welcome more visitors of color, visitors from the Phillips and Whittier neighborhoods.”
Luber denied accusations of a toxic work environment.
“I would say that it’s an accusation that’s not founded in reality, and it doesn’t bother me,” she said, pointing to regular annual turnover. “Given that we’re an organization that has so many hourly employees, we have a lot of churn.”
For the recently departed Native American Exhibition Outreach assistant Gidinatiy Hartman, who had a six-month position but quit after 10 weeks, leaving felt right.
“I feel like there’s a lot of tension in the museum because no one can say their true opinions and feelings,” she said. “It doesn’t create a welcoming environment.”
More than 60 years after it was founded by Twin Cities legend Loyce Houlton, Minnesota Dance Theatre is pausing operations of its performance company in May.
The move follows the retirement of Lise Houlton, Loyce’s daughter, in 2023. The longtime artistic director was in the role for nearly 30 years. Her daughter, Kaitlyn Gilliland, was named as interim artistic director last September and in January she was replaced by Elayna Waxse. Neither Gilliland or Houlton could be reached for comment.
“We will not be contracting dancers for the 2024-25 season,” Waxse said. “We’re using that language in case the opportunity arises in the future, but we do not have any definitive timeline for when that might happen at this point.”
Waxse was a company member with MDT from 2006-09, and has choreographed shows numerous times in intervening years. For the last scheduled show, which is May 3-12 at the Southern Theater, MDT will perform a work by Waxse along with two world premieres by Javan Mngrezzo and Zachary Tuazon, and the Minnesota premiere of Nia-Amina Minor’s “And Yet, Here We Are.”
Waxse said financial difficulties was the reason for the decision to end the dance programming. Changes in foundational support and COVID-19 added strains to its budget.
Although ticket sales were up for last holiday season’s “Nutcracker” and “Carmina Burana” in January, the boosts weren’t matched with grants and charitable-giving MDT needs to stay afloat.
“I’m heartbroken that this is where we’re at,” Waxse said. “That’s really all I can say about that.”
MDT will continue to operate its school, and the board is conducting a national search for a new school director.
Board chair Siri Kommedahl said the board, along with Gilliland, explored options for MDT to continue its dance training program. “Pausing operations on the company and focusing on creating the highest standards of excellence within MDT’s school will allow for a new leader to build infrastructure and create a vision for the school,” Kommedahl said.
In 2019, Zenon Dance Company also ceased to be a performance company because of financial woes. Both companies have performed at the Cowles Center, which is going dark at the end of March.

Indeed Brewing Company is excited to announce the music lineup for Whirlygig, a music, beer, and art festival on May 17-19, 2024.
“It’s always an exciting time to be looking ahead to Whirlygig. Despite being an insane amount of work for our entire team, it’s one of the coolest things we do each year. In my opinion, Whirlygig has become one of the coolest events that happens in Minneapolis every year. This year will be no different. We’re lucky to have the larger Art-a-Whirl encompassing our party, and we’re always looking to add and build on that energy,” says Ryan Bandy, Chief Business Officer, Indeed Brewing Company.
.
“Eli Awada helped with booking the music this year, and we were lucky to work with him; he’ll be a name y’all hear a lot about in the music scene for a long time. Look at this damn lineup! I can say with certainty that every single band is worth seeing. I wouldn’t blame anyone that hung out at the stage for the whole weekend,” says Bandy. “You’ll see the wide world of Minneapolis music, bouncing between guitar-driven rock and roll to hip hop; from physical performance to performances by a congresswoman. From badass women born in the 21st century to Cornbread Harris who is nearly a centenarian (97 years old!). Kevin Washington is a local legend who plays with some of the best players in the city while Carnage creates one of the best individual performances I’ve ever seen. We’re lucky to be able to highlight these artists. Whirlygig 2024 will be epic.”

Customers of numerous U.S. cell service providers reported outages and other service problems early Thursday morning, according to the website Downdetector.com, which tracks such reports. AT&T had the most by far, with tens of thousands of customers telling Downdetector they had no service.
Customers of T-Mobile, Verizon, UScellular and Consumer Cellular were also reporting issues, though far fewer. T-Mobile and Verizon told CBS News that their networks were operational, although some customers may be encountering problems when trying to reach people on another network.
The reports of AT&T outages appear to have started at around 4 a.m. EST, Downdetector said, then seemed to wane some two hours later, then picked up again and were about 60,000 at 11 a.m. EST.
AT&T said some of its customers are experiencing outages, although it didn’t provide a cause. Other providers, including Verizon and T-Mobile, said that while their networks remained operational, some customers might be having problems reaching people on AT&T’s service.
“We are working urgently to restore service to them,” AT&T said. “We encourage the use of Wi-Fi calling until service is restored.”
Officials: Don’t call 911 to test your phone
Meanwhile, some officials urged people not to call 911 to test whether their phone was working.
“Many 911 centers in the state are getting flooded w/ calls from people trying to see if 911 works from their cell phone. Please do not do this,” the Massachusetts State Police wrote on X, the former Twitter.
Likewise, Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management & Communications had a similar message for local residents, noting that on X that people who actually need to get through to 911 should use a landline or find a friend or relative who uses a service other than AT&T and ask them to make the call.
Some municipalities were experiencing difficulties with 911 service.
The San Francisco Fire Department said in a post on X, “We are aware of an issue impacting AT&T wireless customers from making and receiving any phone calls (including to 911). We are actively engaged and monitoring this. The San Francisco 911 center is still operational.”
In North Carolina, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said on X at 3:15 a.m. EST that it was “aware of a nationwide outage impacting AT&T cell phone customers this morning. Customers were briefly unable to contact 9-1-1. There are no disruptions to our call center’s ability to receive 9-1-1 calls. Service should be returning shortly.”
And in Florida, the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office posted on X at 6:43 a.m. EST that, “Texts to 911 from affected AT&T users are now being received. If you have an emergency, and cannot dial out, send a text message to 911.”
The transit system serving Philadelphia and its suburbs, SEPTA, said on X that, “Due to AT&T communication outages, some trains may reflect a delay, however all trains are operating on or close to schedule.”
AT&T outage
As of 8 a.m. ET on Thursday, Downdetector had more than 60,000 reports of service issues from AT&T customers. Most of the complaints were focused on problems with their mobile phones or wireless service.
Outages were highest in Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Indianapolis, Louisville, Miami and San Antonio, according to Downdetector.
Verizon
In a statement to CBS News, Verizon said its network is operating normally, although some customers experienced issues earlier Thursday when calling or texting people who use another carrier. It said that it’s continuing to monitor the situation.
T-Mobile
A spokesperson for T-Mobile said it didn’t experience an outage and that its network is operating normally.
“Downdetector is likely reflecting challenges our customers were having attempting to connect to users on other networks,” the spokesperson said.
UScellular
UScellular also told CBS News that its network is operating normally.
“We are, however, aware of a disruption that could be impacting UScellular customers attempting to roam on or call customers of another carrier,” it said in a statement.
How to turn on Wi-Fi calling
Even if you have no cellular service, you should be able to make phone calls using wireless internet access, which is what AT&T is recommending for its customers.
To turn on Wi-Fi calling on an iPhone, go to “settings,” then “phone” and next click on “Wi-Fi” calling. Apple says you may need to confirm or enter your address for emergency services.
You’ll see “Wi-Fi” in the status bar while you are looking at the control center, which means your phone will use the wireless internet service in your home or office to make calls.
To turn on Wi-Fi calling on Android phones, Google says to open your phone app, then tap “more settings.” Then tap “calls,” and from there tap “Wi-Fi calling.” If that’s not an option on your phone, it means your carrier doesn’t provide the option, according to Google.
What does SOS mean on my phone?
Some customers reported seeing an “SOS” message on their iPhones.
This can happen when a cellular service isn’t widely available, but your phone is letting you know that it will still work for emergency calls, according to Apple.

The Denver Nuggets are the reigning NBA champions but had only one player named to the All-Star Game — two-time MVP Nikola Jokic. Some consider it a slight, but the glass-half-full view is that the rest of the team got a week off to rest and heal.
Denver took advantage as Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Jamal Murray are listed as probable to return to the lineup when the Nuggets host the reeling Washington Wizards on Thursday night to open the second half of the season.
Caldwell-Pope missed three of the past four games with a right hamstring injury and Murray sat out the last game before the break with a lower right leg injury. Both practiced fully when the Nuggets reconvened Tuesday night.
The one player excused from the practice was Jokic because he had participated in the All-Star Game on Sunday night. He was at the Nuggets’ arena Tuesday but was there to watch the Colorado Avalanche’s win over the Vancouver Canucks with his young daughter.
Jokic will be back to work Thursday to try to help Denver end a three-game skid. The Nuggets have dropped to fourth in the Western Conference, three games behind the first-place Minnesota Timberwolves, and need a strong push in the final 27 games to secure home-court advantage for at least the first round of the playoffs.
Michael Porter Jr. said the goal is to find that postseason level in the final two months of the regular season.
“We want to play a style of basketball that we really feel comfortable with going into the playoffs — offensively and defensively,” he said.
The Nuggets’ second half starts against the lowly Wizards, who have lost eight straight and still haven’t reached double-digit victories this season. Only the Detroit Pistons, with eight wins, have fewer victories.
Washington shook things up, with Wes Unseld Jr. stepping down as head coach Jan. 25 to move into the front office and Brian Keefe taking over as the interim head coach.
After winning two of the first three games under Keefe, the Wizards have been in a tailspin. They went into the All-Star break after a 133-126 loss at New Orleans on Feb. 14 despite Deni Avdija’s career-high 43 points to go along with his 15 rebounds.
Avdija has been one of the few bright spots during the losing streak. He is averaging 23 points in February despite scoring just nine in a loss against Cleveland.
“I never thought that coming to the league, seeing all those numbers, those big players score those points, (I’d be]) able to be that hot,” Avdija said after the loss to the Pelicans. “All the hard work, the times that I was down or I didn’t have good games — I was down on myself a lot of times, and I stuck with it.
“I kept working hard, I kept being patient, I went through a lot. And for me, it’s only the start. I feel like I’m still getting better.”
He might find it tougher against Denver, which is sixth in the league in points allowed. Getting Kyle Kuzma back should help after he missed the Wizards’ last game with a non-COVID illness.
LOS ANGELES — A Minnesota man has been arrested on suspicion of killing a 31-year-old woman who was beaten, bound and stuffed inside the refrigerator at her Los Angeles apartment, authorities said Wednesday.
The 41-year-old suspect, who was on probation for narcotics offenses, was taken into custody at his home in Minneapolis on an unrelated federal warrant, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Officials didn’t say what led homicide detectives to him.
The man has agreed to be extradited to California to face charges in the slaying of Maleesa Mooney, police said.
Officers found Mooney dead last Sept. 12 in downtown Los Angeles after her family asked for a welfare check because they hadn’t heard from her. Blood was pooling under the refrigerator and the body inside was bound with electrical cords and clothing, according to a coroner’s report obtained by ABC 7. A cloth gag was stuffed in her mouth.
The body had blunt force injuries and lacerations and the cause of death was determined to be ”homicidal violence,” the coroner’s report said.
Investigators have not disclosed a possible motive or said if the suspect and victim knew each other.
A federal judge on Wednesday affirmed a $5 million arbitration award against MyPillow chief executive Mike Lindell in favor of a software engineer who challenged data that Lindell said proves China interfered in the 2020 U.S. presidential election and tipped the outcome to Joe Biden.
Lindell said he plans to appeal. Asked if he can afford to pay, he pointed out that the breach-of-contract lawsuit was against one of his companies, Lindell Management LLC, and not against him personally.
“Of course we’re going to appeal it. This guy doesn’t have a dime coming,” Lindell said.
Lindell, a prominent promoter of false claims that voting machines were manipulated to steal the 2020 election, launched his “Prove Mike Wrong Challenge,” as part of a “Cyber Symposium” he hosted in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in August 2021. Lindell offered a $5 million reward through Lindell Management for anyone who could prove that “packet captures” and other data he released there were not valid data “from the November 2020 election.”
Robert Zeidman entered the challenge with a 15-page report that concluded the data from Lindell don’t “contain packet data of any kind and do not contain any information related to the November 2020 election.” A panel of contest judges that included a Lindell attorney declined to declare Zeidman a winner. So Zeidman filed for arbitration under the contest rules.
A panel of three arbitrators last April unanimously ordered Lindell to pay Zeidman $5 million, concluding that he had satisfied the contest rules. In Wednesday’s ruling, U.S. District Judge John Tunheim expressed concern about how the panel interpreted what he called a “poorly written contract,” but said courts have only limited authority to overrule arbitration awards. He ordered Lindell to pay up with interest within 30 days.
Lindell is also the subject of a $1.3 billion defamation lawsuit filed by Dominion Voting Systems in the District of Columbia that says he falsely accused the company of rigging the 2020 presidential election. He’s also the target of a separate defamation lawsuit in Minnesota by a different voting machine company, Smartmatic.
Lindell has conceded that he and MyPillow are struggling financially. Fox News, which had been one of his biggest advertising platforms, stopped running MyPillow commercials in January in a payment dispute. Two law firms that had been defending him against lawsuits by Dominion and Smartmatic quit last fall. He acknowledged that he owed them millions of dollars.

First things first as Bengals.com convenes its first Media Mock Draft of 2024.
Bengals founder Paul Brown’s take on the draft: “You draft for need and don’t let anybody tell you any differently.”
So what do they need?
In no particular order, right tackle, defensive tackle, cornerback, tight end. Maybe a safety. Maybe an edge. Maybe a running back. But those can wait, right?
With starting nose tackle DJ Reader, right tackle Jonah Williams, and cornerback Chidobe Awuzie potential free agents, those appear to be the prime needs.
It’s still pretty early. The draft may be a scant seven weeks away. But it’s before next week’s NFL scouting combine, next month’s start of free agency, and the relentless parade of pro days that take up all of March and much of April.
Slightly shorter than eternity.
Nothing impacts the draft more than free agency. But at least now we can get an idea of the universe of players that they’ll be staring at the night of April 25 in the first round because no matter what happens in free agency, the Bengals need quarterbacks to go because they’re not in the market. And if they franchise Tee Higgins, they won’t be in the market for a wide receiver, either.
So they have to like the way this mock unfolds. By the time the Bengals pick at No. 18, five quarterbacks and three wide receivers have gone. So has a tight end. A deep crop of tackles and edge rushers has survived.
What would be nice is finding a freak.
We think we’ve got one.
Here’s how our panel called it:
1.BEARS _ QB Caleb Williams, USC; Brad Biggs, Chicago Tribune: In the name of Mitch Trubisky and Justin Fields, the Bears try again.
2.COMMANDERS _ QB Drake Maye, North Carolina; John Keim, ESPN.com: New owner, new GM, new head coach …
3.PATRIOTS: QB Jayden Daniels, LSU; Karen Guregian, MassLive.com: The first draft pick in the post-Belichickian Epoch is a Joe Burrow heir.
4.CARDINALS_ WR Marvin Harrison Jr., Ohio State; Darren Urban, azcardinals.com: Word on the street is the Cards may be looking to trade back to get a tackle. If one of the top quarterbacks fall, they could be open for business.
5.CHARGERS _ T Olumuyiwa Fashanu, Penn State; Alex Marvez, Sirius NFL Radio: Protecting Justin Herbert and establishing a strong running game are paramount. At right tackle, he could help do both opposite Rashawn Slater in Greg Roman’s offense.
6.GIANTS: WR Malik Nabers, LSU; Mike Eisen, Giants.com: When was the last time the Giants had a clear-cut No. 1? Go back 10 years to the 2014 draft and another LSU guy, right? Odell Beckham, Jr.
7.TITANS _ T Joe Alt, Notre Dame; Turron Davenport, ESPN.com: Brian Callahan’s first pick, like Zac Taylor’s in 2019, is a tackle.
8.FALCONS _ DE Dallas Turner, Alabama; D. Orlando Ledbetter, Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Aren’t the Falcons always picking eight, taking an edge rusher, and never finding one? It’s too early to take the next batch of quarterbacks and they need that edge.
9.BEARS _ WR Rome Odunze, Washington; Brad Biggs, Chicago Tribune: Get Williams a weapon right away. They don’t have a lot after D.J. Moore’s 96 catches.
10.JETS _ T Taliese Fuaga, Oregon State; Rich Cimini, ESPN.com:With the first three wide receivers gone as well as the top two tackles, this is the worst-case scenario for the Jets. Which is almost redundant. Staring at this, Cimini says they’d be highly motivated to trade down, given they lost their second-rounder in the Aaron Rodgers trade. Footnote: They had 13 different offensive line combos last season.
11.VIKINGS _CB Nate Wiggins, Clemson; Mark Craig, Minneapolis Star-Tribune: With thoughts of Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd spinning through their heads.
12.BRONCOS _ QB Bo Nix, Oregon; Mike Klis, 9News: Head coach Sean Payton wants a quarterback and the way Nix processes and gets the ball out quickly appears to be a match.
13. RAIDERS _ QB J.J. McCarthy, Michigan; Vinny Bonsignore, Las Vegas Review-Journal: They get their athletic quarterback of the future and a fit for new offensive coordinator Luke Getsy’s offense.
14.SAINTS _ TE Brock Bowers, Georgia; Jeff Duncan, NOLA.com: You know how the 49ers love to use tight ends. New offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak is coming from 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan’s staff.
15.COLTS _ CB Terrion Arnold, Alabama; Mike Chappell, FOX59.com: The Colts took Julius Brents with the 44thpick last year. They take another cornerback even earlier.
16.SEAHAWKS _DT Jer’Zhan Newton, Illinois; John Boyle, Seahawks.com: The Seahawks currently don’t have a second-round pick, so Boyle could see trading back depending on how their board looks. But if they go here, they could make a defensive player from Illinois their first pick for the second straight year (cornerback Devon Witherspoon) to bolster new head coach Mike Macdonald’s defense.
17.JAGUARS _ CB Quinyon Mitchell, Toledo; Michael DiRocco, ESPN.com: Mitchell wasn’t so small school at the Senior Bowl, where he was clearly the best cover cornerback, and the Jaguars desperately need one with Tyson Campbell and Darious Williams on the final year of their deals.
18.BENGALS _ DT Byron Murphy II, Texas; Geoff Hobson, Bengals.com:
In order to look at the universe, let’s use the telescope of some of the various big boards, such as Pro Football Focus, ESPN’s Scouts Inc., and Daniel Jeremiah’s NFL.com ratings.
With Seattle and Jacksonville plucking two guys we’d love right in front of us, let’s see the top players left:
PFF: Iowa cornerback Cooper DeJean, Murphy, and then ranked 16-19 Florida State edge Jared Verse, Oregon center Jackson Powers-Johnson, UCLA edge Laiatu Latu, and Alabama tackle J.C. Latham.
NFL.com: Latham, Verse, LSU wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr., Washington tackle Troy Fautanu, Oklahoma tackle Tyler Guyton, Mims, Texas A&M linebacker Edgerrin Cooper, Latu, Murphy.
If they franchise Higgins, wide receiver seems to be a 2025 question. They never take linebackers in the first round, they’re set at center, and they haven’t taken a tight end in the first round since 2013.
That leaves us with big guys and cornerbacks. DeJean is interesting because he’s 6-1 and can play both cornerback and safety. Which is nice, but if we’re in the same universe, the tackles on either side of the ball would seem to be a more urgent need.
The edges, Verse and Latu, are really good players, but they took Myles Murphy in the first round last year, defensive dean Sam Hubbard should be back at 100%, and Pro Bowl sacker Trey Hendrickson has two years left on his deal.
The two right tackles that appear twice in the universe are Latham and Mims. But the thing is, they’ve got 31 college starts among them. Jonah Williams, the 11th overall pick for the Bengals in 2019, came in with 44. Latham is a two-year starter and Mims started for a year before he got hurt. They usually like them a little more seasoned. Plus, this is a deep tackle class and, depending on who you ask, you can get one in the second round.
Not so at defensive tackle, where they need bodies with Reader coming off surgery and not under contract. And in the 6-1, 308-pound Murphy, they’ve got the kind of guy you’re not going to get in the second round.
He’s young (he doesn’t turn 22 until the week of the opener) and he’s got just 16 college starts. But he played in 39 games, was the Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year, and he also made Bruce Feldman’s Freaks List. According to nflfdraftbuzz.com, Feldman wrote, “has been clocked at 18 MPH on the GPS, had a team-best 455-pound front squat, and power-cleaned 375 pounds,” with his strength coach saying he could have done more.
And, Murphy racked up an absurd 40 pressures last season with 30 QB hurries.
Of course, at just 6-1, Murphy’s not the prototypical NFL defensive tackle. No worries at Paycor Stadium, where Geno Atkins bowling-balled to the Hall of Fame.
“Against the run, he can utilize his quickness to penetrate and create negative plays. He also has incredible balance to take on blocks while going to one knee before uncoiling and making plays,” says NFL.com’s Jeremiah. “I haven’t seen anyone else use this technique before, but it’s very effective. He has plenty of range to make plays laterally. Overall, Murphy might lack ideal size, but he’s a leverage machine who makes an impact on all three downs.”
Why not? It’s the 30th anniversary of the last time the Bengals took a defensive tackle in the first round when they took Ohio State’s Dan Wilkinson No. 1 overall.
MINNEAPOLIS — A dessert that’s beloved in Minnesota just celebrated a week honoring its fruity versatility. But its nationwide appeal is looking a bit wobbly.
On the heels of National Jell-O Week, we wanted to know: How did Jell-O become a Midwestern staple? And why has its popularity dipped over the years?
“People use it on everything,” said shopper Joan Cole after grabbing couple boxes herself with plans to make a Jell-O salad.
“Going to Lutheran church basements, there was always a Jell-O salad,” added shopper Laurie Franklin.
Jell-O is iconic in its name, jiggly shape, and versatility.
Based on Google searches, it’s Minnesota’s most popular dessert.
Cole believes Jell-O is more popular than ever, at least in the circles she runs around. Franklin disagrees.
“I think younger generations probably don’t even look at Jell-O as being cool,” she said.
One Minnesotan is fluffing up that uncool perception one kitschy video at a time.
Amber Estenson is known as That Midwestern Mom on her social media channels like Tiktok and Instagram. The Northern Minnesota native’s videos play into funny midwestern tropes while making Jell-O recipes she genuinely enjoys.
She visited WCCO’s studio kitchen where she made an Orange Fluff Salad consisting of cottage cheese, orange Jell-O, and Cool Whip. It’s a timeless recipe from church cookbooks now imprinted in Estenson’s mind.
“I’m passing it down to those (younger) generations,” she said of her social media efforts.
That lineage of recipes traces back to Jell-O’s heyday. Trademarked in 1897, the powdered concoction became famous in the early 1900’s for creating vibrant, almost exotic desserts.
“It meant that you had refrigeration. So, it was kind of the food of the wealthy or the aristocracy,” Estenson said. Jell-O had another boost post-World War II as a simple way for hardworking moms to create unique meals. Many recipes found their way into cookbooks put together by church groups, especially in Minnesota and neighboring states.
“I think that’s the appeal of these salads is anybody can do this. It’s just dumping stuff in a bowl, stirring it around,” she said. Addition of fresh, or canned, fruit added to the “healthy” side of the salads and desserts.
Has Jell-O lost its popularity? “I’m probably the wrong person to ask this because if you open up my mother’s pantry there’s an entire door of Jell-O,” Estenson said with a laugh.
The past decade has been filled with not-so-rosy reports about Jell-O’s declining sales, as younger generations opt for healthier, more niche dessert options. Others might associate it with being sick or hospitalized, since it’s a soft food option.
Estenson’s videos might playfully poke fun at the recipes — but they also carry the torch for the wobbly wonder — holding firm in the heartland.
“Why did these recipes survive in Northern Minnesota or in the Midwest? It’s just because we’re hanging on to those things that we’ve always done. Grandma always did it. It reminds us of home,” she said.
Jell-O recently looked to revitalize its brand by giving its packaging a whole new look. It is more colorful and emphasizes that some of its treats are “zero sugar.”
Jeff Wagner joined the WCCO-TV team in November 2016 as a general assignment reporter, and now anchors WCCO’s Saturday evening newscasts. Although he’s new to Minnesota, he’s called the Midwest home his entire life.
