Fear and loathing in Minnesota, a Super Tuesday state: Democrats angry at Biden back him anyway to stop Trump

    [ad_1]

Aishah Al-Sehaim laments the 30,000 Palestinians killed in Gaza, a grim statistic from a war with Israel that she wishes President Joe Biden would try harder to stop.

But the 38-year-old clinical data scientist, an Arab American from the Democratic-heavy suburb of St. Louis Park, Minnesota, is voting for the Democrat on Tuesday anyway because her top priority is stopping Republican Donald Trump.

“It’s not even about hope to affect change in the coming years, but simply that things don’t get more screwed up nationally and internationally,” she said.

TALKING POINTS: Biden, Trump enter Super Tuesday with warning signs for both campaigns

Biden’s campaign isn’t likely to trumpet endorsements such as Al-Sehaim’s. But they give credence to the reelection effort’s strategy of promoting Biden administration programs but also turning out disaffected Democrats by invoking their fears of Trump.

For many reluctant Biden voters in suburban Minneapolis and around the country, any potential value of a protest vote in a primary or general election is outweighed by starkly practical considerations about a possible second Trump presidency.

Biden is still expected to sweep Democratic primaries in Minnesota and 15 other states on Super Tuesday and will likely secure his party’s nomination in the coming weeks.

While campaign officials note the president’s accomplishments on liberal priorities such as climate change, they are all too aware of concerns about his age and a lack of enthusiasm not just for Biden but about politics at large. Biden’s strongest supporters acknowledge his campaign does not inspire voters the same way that Barack Obama or Ronald Reagan once did.

“I’m not sure, because of the poison that’s been injected into the system over the last 10 years, if anybody gets that morning-in-America enthusiasm again,” said Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, a Democrat, referring to Reagan’s famous reelection campaign television ad. “It doesn’t surprise me that much that what you’re finding is people who say they’re going to support him, but it’s not an Obama-type new thing.”

Biden aides argue there is more enthusiasm for the president than the interviews suggest. They point to the 600,000 voters who voted in Michigan’s primary this past week, more than three times the turnout for Obama in 2012.

One of Biden’s token primary challengers is Rep. Dean Phillips, a three-term congressman representing this very tract of Minneapolis suburbs. Yet among nearly two dozen interviews conducted over three days with Democratic voters in his district, Phillips got barely a mention.

Beating Trump was the most common theme in interviews with professionals, students and cross section of age, gender and racial and ethnic backgrounds.

“It frightens me to think about Trump being in office again,” said Audra Robinson.

The 52-year-old marketing executive from Brooklyn Park says she is specifically troubled by Trump’s praise for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, a right-wing nationalist Trump routinely lauds while campaigning, “and whatever his affinity for (Russian President Vladimir) Putin is.”

Orban is scheduled to meet privately with Trump at the former president’s residence in Florida this coming week, a development that punctuated Robinson’s worry about Trump’s “alignment with dictators and some scary people on this earth.”

“So for me, it’s voting so that Trump cannot be in office again,” Robinson said. “And that means getting behind the party. So, I guess that’s Biden.”

James Calderaro of Hopkins knew Phillips was a candidate but dismissed Phillips as “a distraction.”

Calderaro, a 71-year-old retired fashion photographer, was more upbeat about Biden than were many of those interviewed, crediting him with improvements in the economy. But even Calderaro, like many, raised without prompting Biden’s age as a concern. Biden is 81; Trump is 77.

“I understand the the age-related stuff. I don’t necessarily like Biden’s age,” Calderaro said. “But what’s the option? Trump? Really? That guy’s an absolute thug. He’s a danger to our way of life.”

Minnesota has been a progressive bastion, not carried by a Republican presidential candidate since Richard Nixon in 1972, though Trump came within 1.5 percentage points of winning in 2016.

Observers will watch Tuesday for how many Democrats choose “uncommitted” in Minnesota after a protest effort in Michigan’s primary drew more than 100,000 votes. Minnesota has a significant Somali American population that is predominantly Muslim and may similarly protest the Israel-Hamas war, which Israel launched after Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack in which militants killed more than 1,200 people and kidnapped about 250 others.

In an interview at the governor’s residence in St. Paul, Walz motioned to the street outside and noted that there were often anti-war protesters there.

“I’m glad to hear people are talking about this,” he said. “This isn’t an unhealthy thing. We like to air these out.”

Abdifatah Abdi, one of the more than 80,000 Somali immigrants in Minnesota, said he may not vote for Biden out of opposition to what Abdi considers the president’s weak opposition to killing of Palestinian civilians in Gaza.

“A majority of us have voted for Biden before, but this time I don’t think we should vote for him,” said Abdi.

The 26-year-old college student, who is Muslim, is weighing supporting Trump instead of Biden, despite Trump’s 2017 ban on immigration from some Muslim-majority countries, including Somalia, and the suggestion that Trump would reprise it if elected again.

“Trump may be for a ban. But what is worse, a ban or the killing?” Abdi said.

Tacy Nielson described her support for Biden as “grudging.”

“I’m concerned about his mental capacity,” the 36-year-old yoga instructor from Eden Prairie said. “And I’m tired of choosing between the lesser evil of two old white guys. “But Biden is the lesser of those two evils.”

Dan Schultz of Minnetonka joined the refrain.

“Part of being president is to make a powerful statement and to rally the country. There’s concern he can’t do that. It’s a fair concern and I share it,” Schultz said. “But I’m as anti-Trump as you can be. So what choice do I have?”

AFTON, Minn. — Two people are dead after a small plane crashed east of the Twin Cities on Saturday morning.

According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred shortly before 9:45 a.m. near the 15000 block of Afton Hills Boulevard South. Several 911 calls were made by neighbors reporting “what sounded like a small explosion,” officials said.

When first responders arrived, they found a small aircraft that had crashed in the yard of a residence near an attached garage. The plane was fully engulfed in flames, officials said.

Atlanta Braves star Ronald Acuna Jr. has been diagnosed with irritation around the meniscus in his right knee and will have the injury evaluated further.

An MRI performed Friday showed the condition. He was removed from the lineup in the spring training game against the Baltimore Orioles on Friday as a precaution because of right knee soreness, the team said.

The reigning National League MVP, Acuna will visit Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles on Monday for evaluation, per reports. ElAttrache surgically repaired Acuna’s torn right ACL in July 2021.

Acuna was involved in a rundown in Thursday’s game against the Minnesota Twins, and the knee issue apparently occurred during that play.

Acuna, 26, was the NL Rookie of the Year in 2018 and is a four-time All-Star.

In 2023, Acuna became the first 40-70 player in baseball history with 41 home runs and 73 stolen bases, the latter which led the major leagues. He also led the majors in hits (217), runs (149), on-base percentage (.416) and total bases (383).

In 673 career games, Acuna is batting .292 with 767 hits, 161 homers, 402 RBIs and 180 stolen bases.

The Braves signed the outfielder to an eight-year, $100 million deal in 2019.

  • Edina receives top seed, Chanhassen second in Class 2A boys hockey state tournament

Edina receives top seed, Chanhassen second in Class 2A boys hockey state tournament

    [ad_1]

Centennial boys hockey coach Ritch Menne had no issues with his team receiving a No. 3 seed for this week’s Class 2A state tournament.

In fact, he prefers playing in Thursday’s afternoon quarterfinal at the Xcel Energy Center. Last time he led the Cougars to state, they played in the second evening session game. Centennial won but was unable to refire the engines for the Friday semifinal and lost.

Menne’s other realization: his Cougars were under the radar all season. But not underrated. Menne admitted to having “zero expectations” for this season and believes “even our players will say that they can’t believe we’re here.”

Senior defenseman Ty Escobedo got right to the heart of Centennial’s identity crisis. He texted Menne after Thursday’s 5-2 defeat of Maple Grove, “Not bad for a bunch of nobodies.”

Centennial and Cretin-Derham Hall meet at 1 p.m. Thursday, right after No. 2 seed Chanhassen plays Rochester Century/John Marshall to start a day of quarterfinal action.

The evening session features No. 1 seed Edina against Elk River/Zimmerman. Section playoffs weren’t kind to top seeds this season. Only one survived and advanced: Grand Rapids, rewarded with the No. 5 seed at the state tournament.

The Thunderhawks face a color-coordinated nightcap against No. 4 seed White Bear Lake.

“The only thing I can guarantee is that there will be a lot of orange and black in the stands,” Grand Rapids coach Dan Clafton joked.

On Saturday morning, each head coach cast electronic votes for the other seven qualifying teams in his class. The highest and lowest votes for each team were excluded, and the top five teams were awarded seeds. The remaining three teams were placed by blind draw. This format, scrutinized of late by coaches in many team sports, is expected to be replaced by seeding teams 1-8 beginning next season.

Wednesday’s Class 1A quarterfinals begin with New Ulm and last season’s runner-up, Warroad, the No. 2 seed, at 11 a.m., followed by Northfield against No. 3 St. Cloud Cathedral. The evening session starts with No. 1 seed Hermantown vs. Alexandria, then No. 5 Orono and defending champion Mahtomedi, the No. 4 seed.

“We’re telling our kids to go down there and enjoy the experience,” Clafton said. “To enjoy what they worked for. Hopefully, they will be mature enough to reset in the hours before we play our game.”

  • A Bar of Their Own opens, Minnesota’s new tavern dedicated to women’s sports

A Bar of Their Own opens, Minnesota’s new tavern dedicated to women’s sports

    [ad_1]

Emily Omvig of Bismarck, N.D., was visiting friends in Minneapolis when they learned Friday morning that a new kind of bar was opening. Soon they were standing in a long line queuing up for Minnesota’s first watering hole dedicated to women’s sports.

    “There’s not a women’s sport that I won’t watch,” Omvig said.

An ensemble of bagpipes and drums welcomed Omvig and other sports fans waiting to be seated at A Bar of Their Own at 2207 E. Franklin Av. Patrons gathered in a circle to watch Jillian Hiscock, the bar’s owner, throw out an underhand softball pitch, signaling the opening of her establishment. Applause broke out as the ball was caught.

Employees quickly checked IDs and ushered people to their seats as the smell of fried food filled the bar. Memorabilia celebrating women’s sports lined the walls, including U.S. soccer legend Mia Hamm’s Wheaties cereal box, a framed photo of the Minnesota Gophers softball jersey from their 2019 Women’s College World Series, and a piece of art that said “Watch women’s sports.”

The idea for the bar came, Hiscock said, when she visited the Sports Bra in Portland, Ore., the first bar of its kind to feature women’s sports. Hiscock had some casual conversations about the concept with friends in October 2022 but wasn’t sure if her aspirations could become reality. After a conversation with Jenny Nguyen, owner of the Sports Bra, she decided to go for it.

Nguyen had one word to describe the feeling of opening the first women’s sports bar: “Frightening.” But people “were just really jazzed about the idea,” she added.

A Bar of Their Own opened its doors less than a week before the sold-out Big Ten women’s basketball tournament, a goal of Hiscock’s. Jaime and Sarah Mills both said they want to watch March Madness there in the future.

“That would be cool to come and watch that,” Jaime Mills said.

Hiscock’s bar opens at a time when women’s sports are growing exponentially, between the emergence of the Professional Women’s Hockey League and Iowa basketball phenom Caitlin Clark showcasing her talents to the world.

“Places like this help that happen,” Hiscock said of growing visibility for women’s sports.

While the restaurant features women’s sports, not everyone who attended the opening were there for that. “I don’t follow sports in the slightest,” said Fred Kreider, who sat at the bar with a drink.

The address once housed Tracy’s Saloon and Eatery, and it still attracts former customers. Kreider said he just wants to support a local Minnesota business. “I hope they do well,” he said.

Nguyen reiterated that while support for women’s sports is growing, a lot of work still needs to be done.

“We have an agenda to push,” Nguyen said. “That’s representation, exposure and access and investment for women.”

Minneapolis opens first ever women’s sports bar

Minneapolis opens first ever women’s sports bar

    01:40

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — A line along the building, bagpipes and a first pitch all welcomed opening day at A Bar of Their Own Friday morning.

The new bar is set to showcase all women’s sports, all the time.

For many, it’s been a long time coming.

“I played hockey for about 12 years and we had to beg to get ice time,” said Colleen Woodley from St. Paul.

People of all ages packed the bar before lunchtime.

The Seward neighborhood watering hole is taking the space of the former Tracy’s Saloon and Eatery.

“Absolute madness, but in the best way possible,” said owner Jillian Hiscock.

Hiscock said the goal was to create a space dedicated to women’s sports and fans, after visiting a sports bar last year that was lacking.

“I think people have been ready for this and waiting for this for a really long time, and so to have it here and to have folks inside means so much,” said Hiscock.

It all comes just in time for the Big Ten women’s basketball tournament in Minneapolis.

“This is incredible. I love the atmosphere, I love that we finally have a place like this in Minnesota,” said Jami Cooper from Minnetonka.

A place so popular Friday, Hiscock and her staff really had to work to keep up, with people waiting outside for their turn to come in.

“Our team has been really busy getting ready for it. We’re doing our best to get everything out as quickly as we can, but it’s just really fun to have folks here,” said Hiscock.

A Bar of Their Own is open Wednesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

  • 9 juveniles charged following rash of February robberies in Minneapolis

9 juveniles charged following rash of February robberies in Minneapolis

    [ad_1]

Nine juveniles have been charged in connection with a string of 30 armed robberies across Minneapolis over a five-day period in early February, followed by another rash of robberies in the city last weekend.

Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty announced the charging decisions Friday in a video statement explaining how her office handled the cases and helped Minneapolis police with identifying and charging the youth involved. Police referred a dozen juveniles to Moriarty’s office to consider filing charges.

“If we are brought cases with proof where youth are committing violent crimes we will charge them and hold them accountable,” Moriarty said in the video.

In the first onslaught of robberies, MPD believed they were committed by youth who had stolen a car or cars. The agency referred five cases and four minors were charged. But Moriarty said none of the youth were charged for the robberies that occurred.

“It’s important to understand that simply because a youth may be found in a stolen car does not mean that we can prove that they stole the car. It also doesn’t mean that they were in the car at the time it was used to commit a robbery,” she said.

Two supervisors in Moriarty’s office pored over the 30 police reports to identify patterns. When the next rash of robberies hit the city Feb. 25, MPD referred seven cases and prosecutors charged five. Moriarty said the seven kids were not involved in any of the previous robbery cases.

Police Chief Brian O’Hara said in a statement Friday that while it’s disappointing when charges are not made when cases are referred to prosecutors, he appreciates the partnership between the county attorney’s office and MPD investigators.

“I continue to be proud of the great police work our officers and investigators do around the clock to address the recent rash of violent robberies committed by juvenile offenders,” O’Hara said. “Our investigators continue to work around the clock to identify all of the different juveniles involved and collecting evidence to build cases. I am confident the MPD strategy is working. I’m also confident we will continue to make more arrests and present more cases for charging.”

The Star Tribune does not typically name juveniles, despite their court cases being public, unless prosecutors signal their intent to certify them as an adult. One of the robbery cases is nonpublic because the child is under the age of 16 and another case is nonpublic because it didn’t result in a felony-level offense. That child is over the age of 16 and was charged with fleeing on foot, a misdemeanor offense. Under state statute, a delinquency or extended jurisdiction juvenile case is public if the child is at least 16 and the offense is a felony.

    According to the charges:

Police responded to a carjacking at gunpoint Feb. 9 on East Lake of the Isles Parkway. The victim said she was sitting in the driver’s seat of a BMW rental car around 9 p.m. when three males approached her. One shattered her window and another pushed a gun against her arm and told her to get out or else he would shoot. They pulled her out from the vehicle and fled.

Later that night, police spotted another stolen vehicle that was being trailed by the BMW. Officers initiated a pursuit and the BMW crashed into two unoccupied cars. Two males fled through the alley between Irving and Humboldt avenues N. Officers searched the area and found a suspect hiding. Upon arrest, police recovered a handgun on the 17-year-old from Brooklyn Park. The teenager was charged with felony gun possession, fleeing on foot and riding in a stolen vehicle, a misdemeanor.

On Feb. 11, a Kia Sportage was stolen from a church parking lot in south Minneapolis at 39th Street and Nicollet Avenue. The officers spotted the car and initiated a seven-minute pursuit on Lowry Avenue until the vehicle crashed on Plymouth Avenue N. Two passengers fled and one dropped a firearm on the sidewalk. The driver, a 16-year-old from Minneapolis, attempted to flee but was caught by a police dog. He was charged with fleeing in a vehicle, theft of a vehicle and fleeing on foot.

A short while later, police arrested the passenger, a 16-year-old from Minneapolis, who dropped the gun. He was charged with felony possession, fleeing on foot and riding in a stolen vehicle.

Police responded to the robbery spree Feb. 25 involving a Mazda occupied by juveniles armed with guns. A 17-year-old from Richfield was charged with three felony counts of aiding and abetting first-degree robbery and unlawful gun possession.

Three 17-year-olds from Minneapolis were charged Monday with simple robbery and aiding and abetting simple robbery in connection to the theft of a vehicle the night of Feb. 26. A woman was walking up to her apartment on Girard Avenue South when a group of four males ran up behind her and stole her keys. Police found the vehicle occupied by the suspects later that night and placed them under arrest.

(Photo credit: Aaron E. Martinez/American-Statesman / USA TODAY NETWORK)

Minnesota United remain confident heading into Saturday’s home opener against the Columbus Crew in Saint Paul, Minn., despite being without their coach on the sideline and potentially without two key players.

The Loons (1-0-0, 3 points) recorded a 2-1 victory at Austin FC last Saturday under interim head coach Cameron Knowles.

“It should give the guys a lot of belief in knowing the way they can play,” Knowles said. “We know that the energy in the stadium is going to be fantastic on the weekend. To get off to a start like we did and get three points and the only MLS team to win on the road should give us a lot of confidence and energy.”

On Monday, Minnesota named Manchester United assistant coach Eric Ramsay, 32, as the permanent coach to replace Adrian Heath, who was fired four months ago.

Ramsay, who became the youngest head coach in the MLS, will not join the Loons for several more weeks.

Crew forward Christian Ramirez was impressed with Knowles.

“They’ve bought into (Knowles),” he said. “They work really hard defensively. They picked their moments offensively down in Austin. Historically they haven’t been a great road team but at home they perform really well. Their crowd backs them.

“Now that they have a new manager coming, they’re playing to show what they can bring. They know he’s watching so it’s a team with nothing to lose, really.”

The Crew (1-0-0, 3 points) opened with a 1-0 home win versus Atlanta United. Cucho Hernandez’s goal allowed the Crew to become just the third MLS Cup champion in the past eight seasons to win their first match the following season.

“We’ve got to go toe-to-toe with them,” Knowles said. “If you want to be the best you’ve got to beat the best and right now, they’re the best team in our league.”

Minnesota will be without forward Bongokuhle Hlongwane. He is getting in shape after missing part of the preseason while in South Africa obtaining his U.S. green card.

Standout midfielder Emmanuel Reynoso has been hampered by a knee injury. Knowles said it is unlikely Reynoso will play on Saturday.

Investing in Ripple? – Key Factors to Consider Before Buying XRP Tokens – Southwest Journal

    [ad_1]

Ripple and its cryptocurrency, XRP, have been hot topics in the financial world. While the recent crypto rally has seen significant gains for giants like Bitcoin and Ethereum, XRP has taken a more modest path.

Knowing the dynamics of Ripple and deciding whether to invest in XRP tokens requires a thoughtful approach. Here’s what you need to know.

    Key Highlights

    • XRP’s growth has been modest compared to Bitcoin and Ethereum, with unique factors like its legal battle with the SEC influencing its market position.
    • Ripple’s ODL system showcases XRP’s utility in facilitating fast, low-cost international transactions, distinguishing it from other cryptocurrencies.
    • Investors should consider Ripple’s legal situation, its business model, and the broader market before investing in XRP tokens.
    • Despite the challenges, XRP presents a potential investment opportunity for those with patience and a long-term perspective, given its role in the future of finance.

What is XRP and How is it Different?

What is XRP and How is it Different

XRP, often associated with Ripple, is a digital currency designed for fast and inexpensive cross-border transactions. Unlike Bitcoin and Ethereum, which have seen their values skyrocket, XRP’s growth has been more subdued, with just a 12% increase recently, compared to Bitcoin’s 57% and Ethereum’s 52%.

Currently, XRP hovers just below $0.60 per coin, aligning with its average price over the last six to twelve months. For up-to-date insights and developments on Ripple and its XRP tokens, Coinspeaker offers a wealth of information that can help investors stay informed.

Why Hasn’t XRP Joined the Crypto Rally?

Several factors contribute to XRP’s unique position in the crypto market:

    • Ripple’s On-Demand Liquidity (ODL): Ripple’s ODL solution revolutionizes how financial institutions handle transactions, offering near-instant access to funds at low costs. This system positions XRP as a bridge currency, enhancing its utility in real-world applications.
    • Independent Blockchain: XRP operates on a distinct blockchain ledger, employing a Nominated Proof of Stake mechanism. This independence means XRP’s value isn’t directly tied to the fluctuations of Bitcoin or Ethereum.
    • Legal Challenges: Ripple’s ongoing legal battle with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) over selling XRP as an unregistered security has cast a shadow over its value and utility.

Key Factors to Consider Before Investing

Before diving into XRP, investors should weigh several critical considerations:

    Ripple’s Legal Situation

Ripple Labs faces significant legal hurdles with the SEC, impacting XRP’s potential growth and Ripple’s forthcoming IPO. These legal issues are pivotal, as they influence Ripple’s ability to operate and expand. Investors should stay informed about the legal proceedings and their implications for Ripple and XRP.

    Ripple’s Business and Growth Potential

Understanding Ripple Labs’ business model, the utility of XRP, and the company’s growth prospects is essential. Ripple’s technology aims to transform global transactions, but its success depends on adoption rates among financial institutions and the resolution of its legal challenges.

    Investment Alternatives

Given Ripple Labs is not publicly traded, those looking to invest in the blockchain space might consider alternatives like Coinbase, Block, or PayPal. These options offer exposure to the broader crypto market without direct investment in XRP.

    Is XRP a Good Investment?

Is XRP a Good InvestmentIs XRP a Good Investment

The debate around XRP’s viability as an investment often centers on its potential as a store of value versus its utility in payments.  Despite its modest price growth compared to other cryptocurrencies, XRP’s high transaction volumes and role in facilitating cross-border payments present a compelling case for its inclusion in a diversified investment portfolio.

However, potential investors should approach with caution, given the uncertain outcome of Ripple’s legal issues and the absence of immediate price surges.

    Ripple’s IPO and Future Prospects

Ripple’s anticipated IPO has been delayed by its SEC lawsuit. The outcome of this legal battle will significantly influence Ripple’s ability to go public and attract investment. Prospective investors should closely monitor these developments, as they will affect Ripple’s financial transparency and growth trajectory.

    Ripple’s Financial Health

Unfortunately, due to Ripple Labs’ private status, its financials are not publicly disclosed. This opacity makes it challenging for potential investors to gauge the company’s health and prospects accurately.

However, once Ripple addresses its legal challenges and moves closer to an IPO, its financial statements will become a crucial resource for investors. Monitoring Ripple’s progress toward resolving its SEC lawsuit and achieving public company status will be key for those considering an investment.

    Market Sentiment and Ripple’s XRP

The cryptocurrency market is influenced heavily by investor sentiment, which can be particularly volatile. XRP’s price fluctuations around the New Year, with transaction volumes spiking to over 5 million daily, illustrate the market’s responsiveness to developments within Ripple and the broader crypto ecosystem.

Keeping a pulse on market sentiment and regulatory news can provide investors with timely insights into potential price movements.

Ripple’s Role in the Future of Finance

Ripple's Role in the Future of FinanceRipple's Role in the Future of Finance

Ripple’s vision of streamlining global finance through blockchain technology sets it apart. Its ODL system, by enabling instant, low-cost international money transfers, proposes a future where financial institutions can operate more efficiently and inclusively.

The adoption of Ripple’s technology by major banks and financial services could significantly impact XRP’s value and Ripple’s market position.

Should You Buy XRP Tokens Now?

Deciding to invest in XRP requires a balance of patience, risk tolerance, and timing. The current price, just below $0.60, may seem attractive compared to its historical performance and the potential for future growth.

Yet, the ongoing SEC legal battle introduces a level of uncertainty that cannot be ignored. Investors with a long-term outlook and a willingness to weather regulatory storms may find Ripple’s XRP a compelling addition to their portfolios.

Alternatives to Direct Investment in Ripple

For those cautious about direct investment in XRP due to Ripple’s unresolved legal issues or the lack of financial transparency, there are indirect ways to engage with the crypto market:

    • Invest in Crypto-Focused Companies: Companies like Coinbase offer a gateway to the crypto world, providing a platform for trading a wide range of digital currencies, including XRP.
    • Blockchain Technology Stocks: Companies leveraging blockchain technology in sectors beyond finance offer diversified exposure to the innovation driving the crypto market.
    • Crypto ETFs and Funds: While there are no ETFs directly tied to Ripple, several funds invest in a range of cryptocurrencies and blockchain technologies, offering a more balanced investment approach.

    FAQs

    Can XRP transactions be reversed?

No, XRP transactions are irreversible once they’ve been added to the blockchain ledger, similar to other cryptocurrencies.

Does Ripple control the XRP ledger?

Ripple plays a significant role in the development of the XRP Ledger, but the ledger operates on a decentralized network of independent validators.

Are there any countries where buying XRP is restricted?

Yes, regulatory stances on XRP vary by country. It’s essential to check local regulations before investing in XRP or any cryptocurrency.

How does XRP’s transaction speed compare to traditional banking systems?

XRP transactions are significantly faster, settling in 4 to 5 seconds, compared to days for some traditional banking systems.

Can I mine XRP like Bitcoin or Ethereum?

No, XRP cannot be mined. All XRP tokens were pre-mined at launch, with a portion released into the market by Ripple over time.

Is it possible to earn interest on XRP holdings?

Yes, some crypto platforms offer interest on XRP holdings through staking or lending programs, though availability and rates vary.

    Final Words

Investing in XRP tokens offers a unique opportunity within the cryptocurrency market, distinguished by Ripple’s innovative payment solutions and the ongoing legal drama with the SEC.

While XRP hasn’t mirrored the explosive growth of Bitcoin or Ethereum, its role in facilitating efficient, low-cost international transactions positions it as a noteworthy option for patient investors.

As with any investment, careful consideration of the legal landscape, Ripple’s business model, and market alternatives is essential before committing.

    How Koreans Calculate Age?

Let’s break it down with a straightforward example. Consider someone born in 1993 and the current year is 2019. In Korean age, the formula is as follows: Korean age = (2019 – 1993) + 1, which equals 27 years. In contrast, the Western system might show them as 26 years old until their birthday in 2019, after which they’d also be 27 years old.

For fans of Korean culture, let’s apply this to a well-known figure, Jungkook from BTS, born on September 1, 1997. By Western calculation, he turns 22 in 2019. However, in Korean age, he’s considered 23: he’s 22 + 1 after his birthday, but effectively 23 throughout the year.

Another example emphasizes the difference: a child born on December 31 is only a day old in the Western system but considered two years old in Korean age because they’re born as a 1-year-old and gain another year on January 1.

    Age Distribution in NewJeans

    NewJeans member biosNewJeans member bios

    Oldest Members:

    • Minji was born on May 07, 2004, making her 19 years old.
    • Hanni, sharing the same birth year, was born on October 06 and also stands at 19 years old.

    Middle Range:

    • Danielle, slightly younger than her peers above, was born on July 11, 2004, and is therefore 19 years old as well.

    Younger Members:

    • Hyein represents the youngest of the group, being born on April 21, 2008, and is 15 years old.

This close-knit age distribution is common in K-pop, and it often facilitates a cohesive group dynamic, with members sharing similar stages of personal growth and development. Each member of NewJeans brings their unique energy to the group, resonating with fans across various age demographics.

The group made a poignant entrance into the music scene with their debut single “Attention” on July 22, 2022, followed by their debut extended play, “New Jeans,” which was unveiled to the public on August 1, 2022.

A:  Yes, this is my first novel. As a clinical and forensic psychiatrist, I treated patients and families with traumatic brain injury, testified in brain injury cases as a forensic psychiatrist –  and realized that the public knows very little about TBI. Even physicians sometimes missed it! In retirement, I chose fiction as the best vehicle to make accessible this common, real, and poorly understood affliction – a story I was passionate to tell for its social value.

Q:  Were the characters in Accidental Journey based on real people, or did you create them from scratch?

A:  All the characters – Jeff, Cate, and the kids – are fictional. No patient I have encountered would think this as their story. However, I did use my experience and knowledge to create characters who reflect real problems that TBI patients and their families face, in the acute phase and during prolonged treatment and recovery.

Q:  Can you tell us about narrative medicine and why you believe it is helpful in cases of TBI?

A:  Narrative medicine is a broad concept that means using story to help clinicians and the public understand the healthcare experiences of patients and families. It begins with understanding every patient as a unique person, knowing their stories, what their lives are like, taking detailed histories that goes far beyond the problems for which they seek care. A novel that tells stories like Cate and Jeff’s, immersing one in the injury and pulling the reader through their experience, falls within that broad definition.

Dr. Richard D. LentzQ:  How did you balance the medical aspects with the emotional and personal experiences of the characters?

A:  Brain injury affects one’s ability to remember, to process information, to relate to others. It affects one’s personhood, so a person with TBI cannot separate the medical aspects from their emotional and personal experiences. That said, there are medical events that take place over time as the consequences of the injury unfold, with emotional impact for individuals and families. An interesting story must be emotionally real, not just inform. In writing Accidental Journey, I had two audiences in mind, those who want to know more about TBI, and those who enjoy literary fiction.

Q:  Were there moments that were particularly difficult to capture in your narrative? Did you face any unique challenges in conveying medical information in a fictional narrative?

A:  Jeff, following his particular kind of TBI, lacks insight into how his injury has affected him. Because of this, he cannot tell us what he feels or thinks. Jeff has to reconstruct his experience from fragments of memory and emotion. The story relies on the interactions of Jeff’s wife and children with Jeff, what they observe and feel, to tell the story of Jeff’s injury.

Q:  What message or awareness do you hope readers gain from Accidental Journey?

A:  My hope is that readers acquire knowledge and experience empathy – a greater understanding of how TBI affects individuals and families and compassion for what they endure.

Q:  Let’s talk about your future writing plans. Do you plan to explore similar themes or medical topics in your future works?

A:  Sports injuries and war injuries are often in the news. Accidental Journey is about an accident, since accidents – falls, motor vehicle crashes (also assaults and abuse) – cause the great majority of TBIs. I have in mind the story of a soldier and the story of an athlete.

Q:  Wonderful! Might we see you leading or participating in book club discussions of Accidental Journey?

A:  I have presented my work, with readings, to book groups. It’s fun for me, and responses have been positive.

Q:  How may we follow your news?

A:  I have a website, RichardDLentz.com. I hope to keep my book in the news, especially around March, which is Brain Injury Awareness Month, and around the Holidays. At any time of the year, books make wonderful gifts!

Roman Josi had a goal and two assists and Juuse Saros made 33 saves as the host Nashville Predators extended their season-high winning streak to seven, beating the Minnesota Wild 6-1 on Thursday night.

Yakov Trenin and Cole Smith scored eight seconds apart in the first period and Filip Forsberg, Ryan O’Reilly and Ryan McDonagh also scored for Nashville, which moved into the top wild-card spot in the Western Conference.

Gustav Nyquist and Colton Sissons each added a pair of assists to help Saros win his fifth consecutive start. He has allowed just seven goals during that span.

Connor Dewar scored for Minnesota, which lost for the 11th time in its last 13 trips (2-8-3) to Nashville. Filip Gustavsson, who had a five-game road win streak snapped, made 25 saves.

Minnesota jumped out a 1-0 lead at the 9:51 mark of the first period when Saros left a rebound of a Brandon Duhaime shot in the slot. Dewar then controlled the puck and wired a wrist shot inside the left post for ninth goal of the season.

Trenin tied it 49 seconds later after Josi backhanded a pass to him in the crease where he redirected it over Gustavsson’s left pad for his 10th goal of the season.

Smith then made it 2-1 on the ensuing faceoff when he intercepted a pass from defenseman Declan Chisholm and skated in and put in a wrist shot around Gustavsson’s right pad. The two goals over an eight-second span tied a Predators record and capped a spurt of three goals in a 57-second span.

Forsberg increased Nashville’s lead to 3-1 at the 17:55 mark of the second period with a power-play goal, firing a wrist shot from the top of the right circle that deflected off the stick of defenseman Jonas Brodin and past Gustavsson for his 29th goal.

The Predators then broke the game open with two goals in the first 8:03 of the third period. Josi got the first at the 1:32 mark when he snuck a sharp-angle shot inside the near post for his 15th goal. O’Reilly followed with his 21st goal with a wrist shot from the low slot off a Nyquist pass.

McDonagh made it 6-1 with 6:03 to go when he one-timed in a point shot off a Luke Evangelista pass.

  • Large fire destroys south Minneapolis homeless encampment

Large fire destroys south Minneapolis homeless encampment

    [ad_1]

A blaze leveled the large Camp Nenookaasi homeless encampment Thursday, sending billowing smoke over south Minneapolis as residents were forced to evacuate.

Camp leader Nicole Mason said she was at the site when she noticed a yurt was on fire. Several neighbors said they heard explosions amid the flames.

“I went to get an extinguisher and saw the fire was spreading from yurt to yurt, so I thought the first thing was to get everyone out,” Mason said.

A call came in a little after noon about the fire in the 1100 block of E. 28th Street, Fire Chief Bryan Tyner said at a news conference. Firefighters evacuated roughly 50 nearby residents and put out the blaze in about 30 minutes, the chief said.

An investigation into the cause of the fire was underway Thursday. Propane tanks could be seen scattered around the camp’s remains, and Tyner said the flammability of the site made for a “very dangerous situation.”

“What we saw today is kind of our worst fear when you have that situation,” Tyner said.

Two people suffered minor injuries, one with burned hands and another with smoke inhalation, Tyner said. Neither needed to be hospitalized.

At the news conference, Mayor Jacob Frey reiterated past statements that large homeless encampments aren’t safe for the people living there “and they’re not safe for the surrounding neighbors.”

The city’s Homeless Response Team and outreach workers from other organizations were at the site offering to connect people to shelter and providing clothing and water, according to a fire department news release. A Metro Transit bus was also on the scene to provide a warm place for people who were evacuated.

Ashley Jensen, who lives in a house next to the encampment, was waiting behind caution tape on the sidewalk as firefighters inspected her home. Some of the house’s siding melted and the interior was flooded with water from fire hoses.

“Everyone was screaming and running around, and that’s why I evacuated,” Jensen said. She said she heard several explosions before running down the sidewalk, and that camp residents “were trying to grab their things and get out, but the fire was spreading super fast.”

Jensen said she was asked by the City Attorney’s Office just days before the fire whether she had safety concerns about the camp. “Absolutely, on so many levels,” she said.

The encampment was the latest iteration of Camp Nenookaasi, which has moved multiple times after the city dismantled and fenced off its previous locations.

Many of the camp’s residents are Native Americans with tribal affiliations, struggling with a complex mix of addiction and trauma. Those issues have made it difficult for them to use sober emergency shelters, and complicate the work of the nonprofit agencies trying to match them with services and suitable housing.

The city recently contracted with the for-profit group Helix Health and Housing Services to assist with finding housing solutions for Camp Nenookaasi residents. So far it has connected over 100 people with low-barrier housing, City Operations Officer Margaret Anderson Kelliher said at the news conference.

Mason said some camp residents have had issues with the housing that Helix selected for them, such as not feeling safe with their roommates.

While Frey told reporters the city’s approach to finding long-term housing solutions is working. City Council Member Jason Chavez disagreed. He said he doesn’t think the city’s solutions are working.

“If the administration had a plan, as in an encampment response, one can beg the question that just maybe people would be using different things to keep each other warm, but there is no policy,” Chavez said.

Frey took issue with Chavez’s comments Thursday night.

“We do have a strategy that’s less dangerous — it’s called getting people indoors,” the mayor said.

Several Minneapolis City Council members, including Chavez, are pushing a “safe outdoor spaces” ordinance, which would permit outdoor encampments in certain circumstances. In a phone interview, Chavez stressed that Frey has the authority to decide on camp closures.

Mason said some of the camp residents had already moved Thursday to a new location, in the 2800 block of 14th Avenue S.

“It was scary that as we were running out, the fires were coming. We didn’t know how fast they were going to catch up to us,” she said.

Staff writers Susan Du and Dave Orrick contributed to this story.

  • Biden’s loss of support in Michigan a blow to campaign

Biden’s loss of support in Michigan a blow to campaign

    [ad_1]

More than 100,000 people voted “uncommitted” in Michigan’s presidential primary. What happens next will be, at least in part, up to President Joe Biden.

The aim of some voters was to show the President his support for the Israeli government’s war in Gaza is a decisive factor within the Muslim, Arab American and pro-Palestinian communities. An exit poll of more than 500 Muslim voters was conducted by the Council on American Islamic Relations.

Robert McCaw, government affairs director for the council, said 94 percent of American Muslims who voted in the Democratic primary voted “uncommitted.”

“It’s a clear sign that our communities are organized,” McCaw emphasized. “We’re a political force in these states, and other swing states, and we can tip the results in any election when it counts.”

The exit poll found potential third-party candidates are polling better than Biden and, if an election were held today, 40 percent of Muslim voters would prefer an unnamed “other candidate.” The poll also found 13 percent might vote for GOP front-runner Donald Trump.

The Biden administration has faced significant protests in Michigan, particularly in Dearborn, with the largest per capita Muslim population in the U.S. According to McCaw, the initiation of the “Vote Uncommitted” campaign was in protest of the President’s reluctance to call for a ceasefire in Gaza. He stressed the voters were not bluffing.

“It’s noteworthy that potential third-party candidates, such as Dr. Cornel West, are polling better than Biden with Muslim voters,” McCaw reported. “While others like Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Jill Stein are polling evenly with the President.”

In response to the protest vote, Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud wrote on social media, “Today, thousands said, ‘Enough.’ As American citizens and Michigan voters, we have made our voices heard at the ballot box. Now, it is up to President Biden to listen to Michigan and do the right thing.”
