  • Rideshare users see headaches if Uber, Lyft drivers pull out of Minneapolis over council vote

Rideshare users see headaches if Uber, Lyft drivers pull out of Minneapolis over council vote

    [ad_1]

While the Minneapolis City Council voted to boost pay for Uber and Lyft drivers in the city Thursday, the people who use the apps regularly are wondering if it’s about to get harder to get home.

The council met for the final vote on a measure meant to raise pay for rideshare drivers. It passed 9 to 4, a veto-proof majority. Mayor Jacob Frey vetoed a similar measure last year, but the council majority has tipped further to the left since then.

Uber and Lyft have amped up a campaign against the measure, taking steps to signal they intend to pull out of Minneapolis on May 1.

The departure of rideshare services would impact greatly impact Maggie Leese’s commute to work, she said Thursday after the council vote. In her experience, she said, it’s much more affordable than parking in an expensive parking garage. Plus Uber also allows pets, she said, as she patted her dog Luna.

“Our friends that we work with a live a couple blocks away, we share a car (ride share),” Leese said. “I think it’d be more problematic than anything if there are no companies.”

Late Wednesday at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, incoming travelers monitored the location of their drivers by phone while waiting in the airport Uber/Lyft pickup zone.

Mark Phelps, of Eden Prairie, said he frequently uses both Lyft and Uber to travel in and out of Minneapolis. He looks at both apps for the cheapest ride and if one is up he uses the other, he said.

“We’ve taken a cab from the airport, but otherwise calling a cab? I haven’t done it in years,” Phelps said, calling the prospect “a pain.”

The Minneapolis council’s plan would boost pay for ride share drivers who say they’ve seen less income in recent years and that they struggle to make enough to cover more than their expenses.

The plan would pay drivers a minimum of $1.40 per mile and 51 cents per minute while transporting riders on any trip within the city limits. Lyft and Uber have defended their pay as fair.

Jen Lenzmeier typically drives to the airport, but she and her husband opted for rideshare on Wednesday after returning from a long international trip. And the Chisago City couple goes for rideshare any time they head into the city.

“When we’re in Minneapolis, when we come spend the night and go out, we always Uber,” Lenzmeier said.

Ellie Thurston sat atop her suitcase in the pickup bay while waiting for her ride to Northfield, Minn. Without rideshare apps, what is already a 40-minute car ride would turn into an hours-long complicated bus trip, she said. While it’s unclear how an Uber and Lyft pullout from Minneapolis would affect the greater region, Thurston noted that the two companies have a large amount of sway in an area that still lacks plentiful transit options.

“They are practically holding the city hostage,” she said.

  • Veto-proof Minneapolis City Council approves rideshare driver pay hike; Frey vows veto

Veto-proof Minneapolis City Council approves rideshare driver pay hike; Frey vows veto

    [ad_1]

Dismissing Uber and Lyft’s vows to leave town and declaring a victory for a sector of underpaid workers, a veto-proof majority of the Minneapolis City Council on Thursday approved a pay increase for rideshare drivers that Mayor Jacob Frey immediately pledged to veto.

The vote was 9 to 4, enough to override a veto if that vote were to hold.

If the council overrides the promised veto this month, both ride-hailing companies said Thursday they would cease operations in the city — and perhaps Minnesota — on May 1, the day the pay increase would take effect.

Uber and Lyft are the only two rideshare operations licensed to operate in Minneapolis, although several entities have indicated an interest in starting up in the city.

Supporters, including organized groups of drivers and some labor advocates, say the approved minimum pay scales and other protections are the best way to ensure drivers earn the equivalent of the city’s $15.57 hourly minimum wage. While driving for Uber or Lyft is often seen as a side gig, it has become the sole source of income for many drivers.

“If employers leave because they are paying sub-minimum wages and companies step in who pay minimum wages, I believe that’s a win for our city,” said Council Member Jason Chavez.

Uber and Lyft, however, say the minimums are too high to make doing business in the city worthwhile. To preserve their margins, the companies say, they would have to nearly double fares, resulting in so few riders that their business model would collapse.

The vote came on the eve of a state report that could explain which rates would equate to specific actual earnings for drivers — a tricky figure to nail down in the dynamic pricing universe of ridesharing.

An attempt to delay the council vote until that report, which is being conducted for the Department of Labor and Industry, was available fell short Thursday.

Before the vote, Frey pleaded for the council to wait for the report and soften its demands to a level that he said Uber and Lyft would accept — but would still effectively nearly double the rates drivers earn.

The measure approved Thursday is similar to one the mayor vetoed last year.

Opponents of the plan include business leaders and bar and restaurant associations. Some in the disability community also are concerned. They note that some people unable to drive rely on rideshare companies, often with public aid vouchers, to travel to work and medical appointments or to see friends and family.

However, David Dively, executive director of the Minnesota Council on Disabilities, said Uber and Lyft shouldn’t be considered an integral part of transportation for people with disabilities because few rideshare vehicles are wheelchair-accessible.

In the past week, the rideshare companies increased pressure on City Council to reject the pay increase. Uber took out ads on the home page of the Star Tribune and on local radio, and Lyft wrote to council members, appealing to their sense of economic justice by offering figures showing that the typical Minneapolis rider is working class.

During the second quarter of 2023, some 7,000 Uber drivers provided nearly 300,000 rides in the metro area, according to figures the company supplied.

    Companies react

Following Thursday’s vote, Uber issued a statement suggesting it would seek to pre-empt the city’s ordinance via state law, implicitly as a way to return after leaving.

“Uber supports comprehensive statewide legislation that guarantees drivers $35/hr minimum earnings while working and protects their flexibility and independence,” the statement read. “If this ordinance is enacted, we look forward to working with drivers, riders and the legislature to bring rideshare back.”

Lyft released a statement restating its intent to leave if nothing changes.

“For the second time in less than a year, the bill sponsors have willfully chosen to ignore offers to collaborate, instead choosing to rush through the most extreme figures possible,” the statement read.

“We implore Mayor Frey to veto this legislation and instead join our efforts to pass a statewide minimum earnings standard that can balance the needs of all. Otherwise, we will no longer be able to operate in the city once the bill takes effect on May 1.”

    Drivers react

It’s difficult to gauge driver sentiment. More than 300 Lyft drivers signed an online petition opposing the plan, and some have complained that a small, vocal group of supporters dominated the public discourse.

The drivers who attended the council’s vote Thursday overwhelmingly cheered.

“This is great! This is historic! Thank you, council members,” driver Farhan Badel shouted.

Matthew McGlory, who said he’s driven more than 10,000 trips for Lyft and nearly as many for Uber, said he earns less than half the price the rideshare app shows to riders — with tip included.

He said he doubts Uber and Lyft would leave Minneapolis because of the amount of business travel, the Delta Air Lines hub at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and the large number of national events held in the city.

“I think that is a poker bluff,” McGlory said.

Seeing big companies make 60% of ride income when the drivers provide the service doesn’t make sense, said Marianna Brown, who was a rideshare driver in New York before driving in Minneapolis.

“Why should we let the big corporations make all the money when we as little people make nothing?” Brown asked.

    What drivers get

The plan approved Thursday guarantees a floor of $1.40 per mile and 51 cents per minute. The driver of a wheelchair-accessible vehicle would get $1.81 per mile. Frey had pushed for a minimum payment of $1.20 per mile and 35 cents per minute.

The approved plan includes additional provisions, including a $5 minimum payment for any ride, annual increases for drivers and restrictions on how money can be deducted from drivers’ wages.

    How they voted

Voting in favor were Council President Elliott Payne, Vice President Aisha Chughtai and Members Robin Wonsley, Jeremiah Ellison, Jamal Osman, Katie Cashman, Andrea Jenkins, Jason Chavez and Aurin Chowdhury.

Voting against were Council Members Michael Rainville, LaTrisha Vetaw, Emily Koski and Linea Palmisano.

    What’s next

The state study, which is expected to be released Friday, comes amid a push to raise the pay and working standards of rideshare drivers across Minnesota.

The Legislature passed a driver pay plan last year, but Gov. Tim Walz vetoed it amid opposition from Uber and Lyft.

Walz established a task force, including drivers and company representatives, to look into the matter and recommend a plan. The group finished its work without specific rate recommendations but before the new study had concluded.

The study is the first in Minnesota to examine aggregate data from the rideshare companies and one Frey said the council should have waited for.

“The statewide report is literally going to be released tomorrow,” Frey said Thursday. “It’s irresponsible to pass policy today when we’ll have the data tomorrow.

Supporters of the council’s plan said they could change the rates before they become effective May 1.

Report: Wolves’ Karl-Anthony Towns (knee) being evaluated

    [ad_1]

(Photo credit: Brad Rempel-USA TODAY Sports)

Minnesota Timberwolves star Karl-Anthony Towns is being evaluated for a left meniscus injury, ESPN reported on Thursday.

The big man’s return to the lineup is up in the air as doctors determine whether the four-time All-Star requires an immediate procedure on his knee, per the report.

Towns, 28, played only 21 minutes in Minnesota’s 119-114 victory against the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday night.

The timing of the injury is brutal for the Timberwolves (43-19), who entered Thursday tied for the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Towns is averaging 22.1 points, 8.4 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 60 games (all starts) this season and is shooting 42.3 percent from 3-point range, a career best.

The 7-footer has averaged 22.9 points, 10.9 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 571 games (all starts) since the Timberwolves drafted him No. 1 overall in 2015.

  • Has the SEC Approved the First Bitcoin ETFs? 10 Things to Know – Southwest Journal

Has the SEC Approved the First Bitcoin ETFs? 10 Things to Know – Southwest Journal

    [ad_1]

The world of investing just got a big shake-up, and it’s all thanks to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). They’ve said “yes” to not just one, but 11 Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs).

If you’re into Bitcoin or just curious about its price movements, this is pretty huge news. In this post, I’ll explain what this means and explore seven critical things you should know about this landmark decision.

    Key Highlights

    • The SEC has approved 11 Bitcoin ETFs, making it easier for investors to get involved in Bitcoin without direct ownership.
    • Big fund managers like BlackRock and Fidelity are managing these ETFs, signaling strong institutional support for Bitcoin.
    • The approval has led to significant price increases for Bitcoin and Ethereum, highlighting the impact of regulatory decisions on cryptocurrency markets.
    • While Bitcoin ETFs offer a more accessible way to invest in cryptocurrencies, they come with risks related to market volatility and regulatory uncertainty.

    What Is a Bitcoin ETF?

Imagine you want a piece of chocolate cake, but instead of buying the whole cake, you get a slice. That’s what investing in a Bitcoin ETF is like.

You get a share of the action without needing to own the actual Bitcoin. It’s a way for more people to join the party without the hassle of managing a digital wallet or understanding all the techy stuff.

To keep an eye on Bitcoin’s current market value, Binance offers real-time price tracking and comprehensive market data, making it a valuable resource for investors interested in the cryptocurrency’s latest price movements.

    1. Eleven’s the Magic Number

Eleven Bitcoin ETFs have received the green light from the SEC. There are a lot of new ways for investors to get involved in Bitcoin without diving directly into buying and holding the cryptocurrency themselves.

    2. Big Names Are Playing the Game

Heavy hitters like BlackRock and Fidelity Investments are stepping into the ring to manage these ETFs.

With such big fund managers getting involved, it’s a sign that Bitcoin is becoming a significant part of the investment landscape.

    3. But, There’s a But…

    Bitcoin's Price

Even with the approval, the SEC still has its eyebrows raised about cryptocurrencies.

They’re cautious, pointing out the risks and the rollercoaster ride that is Bitcoin’s price. It’s a reminder that while Bitcoin can shoot up in value, it can also plummet.

    4. A Ripple Effect on Prices

Following the SEC’s nod, Bitcoin’s price saw a significant jump. Ethereum, another popular cryptocurrency, also got a boost in price.

People are speculating that Ethereum might get its own set of ETFs, and that’s creating excitement and pushing prices up.

    5. Analysts Are Betting Big

Experts think a lot of money will flow into Bitcoin ETFs, which could push the currency’s price even higher.

Galaxy, a financial services provider, predicts that the market for these ETFs could balloon to $100 billion over time. That’s a lot of confidence.

    6. A Win for Accessibility

    Investing in BitcoinInvesting in Bitcoin

Spot Bitcoin ETFs are making it easier for everyone to invest in Bitcoin. You don’t need to worry about keeping your investment in a digital wallet anymore.

It’s a big step toward bringing more people and more money into the crypto space.

    7. A Shift in the Landscape

The approval of Bitcoin ETFs by the SEC is a big deal. It shows a change in how regulators view cryptocurrencies.

Before, the U.S. was seen as not very welcoming to crypto. Now, with nearly a dozen new Bitcoin funds hitting the U.S. markets, it’s a clear sign that times are changing.

    8. The Ripple Effect on Other Companies

The entrance of Bitcoin ETFs into the market could also mean a shift in how people invest in cryptocurrencies. Before, companies like Coinbase and MicroStrategy were popular choices for investors looking to get exposure to Bitcoin without directly buying it.

Now, with Bitcoin ETFs offering a more straightforward and possibly safer avenue, the value of these companies as “crypto proxies” might decrease.

    9. The Role of the Court

The Role of the CourtThe Role of the Court

Interestingly, the path to approval wasn’t just about the SEC deciding to say yes. A court ruling played a crucial role by calling out the SEC’s previous denial of a Grayscale ETF as “arbitrary and capricious.” This ruling effectively opened the door for the approval we’re seeing now.

    10. Caution in the Wind

Despite the excitement, it’s crucial to remember that investing in Bitcoin, whether directly or through ETFs, carries risks.

Bitcoin’s price is famous for its dramatic ups and downs. Plus, with ETFs, there’s the additional consideration of fees and the potential loss of anonymity that comes with direct cryptocurrency ownership.

What Does the SEC Really Think?

What Does the SEC Really Think? What Does the SEC Really Think?

It’s worth noting that the SEC’s approval of Bitcoin ETFs doesn’t mean they’re giving Bitcoin itself a thumbs up.

SEC Chairman Gary Gensler made it clear that the approval of specific Bitcoin ETF shares is not an endorsement of Bitcoin. It’s an important distinction, emphasizing the regulatory body’s cautious stance towards the cryptocurrency itself.

    FAQs

Can Anyone Invest in A Bitcoin ETF?

Yes, anyone with access to a brokerage account that offers the ETFs can invest in a Bitcoin ETF.

    Do Bitcoin ETFs Pay Dividends?

No, they typically do not pay dividends. They reflect the price movements of Bitcoin.

    Are Bitcoin ETFs Safe?

They are subject to market risks, including the volatility of cryptocurrency prices. They are considered safer than direct cryptocurrency investments but are not risk-free.

How Do Bitcoin ETFs Affect Taxes?

Investing in them can lead to capital gains taxes, similar to other investment vehicles. It’s advisable to consult a tax professional.

Can I Use Bitcoin ETFs for Retirement Savings?

Yes, you can include them in your retirement savings, but consider the high risk associated with cryptocurrency investments.

How Quickly Can I Sell My Bitcoin ETF Shares?

These shares can be sold as quickly as any other ETF or stock, typically within the trading hours of the stock exchange they’re listed on.

    Final Thoughts

Investing in Bitcoin ETFs brings its own set of challenges and opportunities. While it opens the door for many to invest in Bitcoin more easily, it’s essential to remember the volatile nature of cryptocurrencies

Prices can skyrocket, but they can also take sharp dives. If you’re thinking about jumping into Bitcoin ETFs, it’s wise to proceed with caution, do your homework, and consider how it fits into your overall investment strategy.

MINNEAPOLIS — Minneapolis teachers will be sounding off Thursday on the district’s proposed budget cuts, calling it “emotional blackmail” that targets some of the district’s most vulnerable students.

This is all coming as the district and its teachers are in mediation for a new contract deal.

Minneapolis Public Schools says it’s dealing with what it calls a “historic” budget shortfall of at least $110 million. But teachers aren’t buying it.

To make up for the lack of money, the district says cuts may need to be made to fifth-grade music classes, assistant principal positions, specialists for literacy and math and less funding for other programs.

The Minneapolis Federation of Teachers is blaming the budget shortfalls on the district’s reckless spending. The union says the administration needs to reprioritize its spending because better pay and benefits for teachers means higher quality education for students.

Teachers in the district have worked without a contract for eight months. They will speak more at a news conference scheduled for Thursday afternoon.

Biden to Address Nation as Two Wars Rage Abroad

    [ad_1]

Washington – The State of the Union address is traditionally the venue where American presidents highlight domestic successes, and President Joe Biden is expected to discuss his handling of the economy, reproductive rights, gun control, and immigration Thursday evening.

But as the United States deals with wars in the Middle East and Europe, foreign policy may be higher on the agenda in Biden’s fourth, and potentially final, such speech to a joint session of Congress.

The president intends to highlight his achievements in “restoring American leadership on the world stage,” John Kirby, White House national security communications adviser, told VOA during an interview on Wednesday.

American leadership, he added, gives it the ability to influence actions of world leaders and adversaries “in ways that are more in keeping with our national security interests.”

That influence has failed to overcome stark differences between Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on issues including how to deliver more humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza, the postwar role of the Palestinian Authority and the U.S. vision for a future Palestinian state.

On Ukraine, American leadership is overshadowed by House Republicans’ obstruction of a Senate-approved $95 billion foreign aid package that includes $61 billion to support Kyiv in its fight against Russia. The bill also includes $14 billion in security assistance for Israel, $9 billion in humanitarian assistance and $5 billion to support partners in the Indo-Pacific, as Washington competes against Beijing for regional influence.

The wars in Ukraine and Gaza will be prominently featured in the foreign policy portion of Biden’s speech, as will the U.S. strategic rivalry with China. Analysts say the president will employ different approaches on the two issues as he considers voters’ sentiments ahead of his bid for reelection in November.

    Push for Ukraine aid

Biden will use his address to again call for the passage of the foreign aid bill and argue that it is not in America’s interest to embrace isolationism amid signs of growing Russian expansionism.

“The president is going to continue to make his case that House Republicans need to move forward. The speaker needs to put the national security supplemental on the floor,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said during her briefing Wednesday. “We know that it would get overwhelming support.”

While the Biden administration has gathered international support for an effort that includes substantial military and economic aid to Ukraine, major sanctions on Russia and greatly increasing NATO’s military posture in eastern Europe, it has failed to provide a strong case for this policy for the American people, said John Herbst, former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine who is now senior director of the Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center.

“This in turn has made it easier for naïve voices, especially in the one corner of the Republican Party to block the assistance Ukraine needs to avoid a defeat,” Herbst told VOA.

Vanderbilt University presidential historian Thomas Schwartz predicted Biden “will go all in” on Ukraine, particularly in light of the recent death of Alexey Navalny in a Siberian prison. The Russian dissident’s death has intensified U.S. views that supporting Ukraine’s efforts to push back against Russian President Vladimir Putin is “a real moral cause,” Schwartz told VOA.

“This will also allow him to draw a sharp contrast with Trump, who has, of course, expressed admiration for Putin in the past and has not been as supportive on the Ukraine issue,” Schwartz added.

Polls show that Americans’ support for sending military aid to Kyiv is fractured along party lines, with voters of the president’s party largely sympathetic to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s war efforts.

According to a poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, 67% of Democrats see it as a priority for the U.S. government to prevent Russia from gaining more territory in Ukraine and to help Ukraine regain territory that is currently occupied by Russia. Only 37% of Republicans agree.

Biden will use his address to rally support amid Americans’ war fatigue. Overall, 37% of respondents – 55% of Republicans and 17% of Democrats – say the U.S. government is spending too much on aid to Ukraine.

    Tread carefully on Gaza

The president is likely to tout his immediate support for Israelis following Hamas’ October 7 attack and underscore the importance of ensuring that Israel can defend itself against the U.S.-designated terror group’s threats.

But he will need to tread carefully on the issue, taking into account the division between pro-Israel Democrats and independents who support his stance on the conflict and progressive Democrats, as well as Arab and Muslim Americans, who are angered by it.

Outrage over the more than 30,000 people killed in Gaza and Biden’s refusal to put conditions on U.S. military aid for Israel has resulted in significant portions of Democratic primary election voters in Michigan and Minnesota marking their ballots “uncommitted” to signal their protest and demand an immediate and permanent cease-fire.

Negotiators have not yet been able to bring the fighting in Gaza to a halt ahead of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, which begins this weekend. On Tuesday, Biden said the fate of the temporary cease-fire deal is in the “hands of Hamas” after Israel agreed to a “rational offer” that had been put on the table.

Hamas has since responded saying there can be no hostage exchange without a permanent cease-fire and full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. The group accused Israel of stalling the talks.

Israeli politicians will be carefully watching Thursday to see who Biden blames for the deadlock and how critical he is of Israeli efforts to protect and deliver aid to Palestinian civilians, said Jonathan Rynhold, head of the Department of Political Studies at Israel’s Bar-Ilan University.

As Biden is likely to reiterate his call for a two-state solution, Israelis will be anxious to see whether he calls on Israel to “present a clear vision that includes a Palestinian state,” Rynhold told VOA. “I doubt he’ll do it, but if he does, it’s bad for Netanyahu but not bad for the war.”

Biden is likely to focus his criticisms on the far-right elements within the Israeli government and signal displeasure at violence committed by what he calls “extreme Israeli settlers” in the West Bank, as he has done several times in the past.

Kirby said the president will also call for increasing humanitarian aid for Palestinians. With the Netanyahu government’s refusal to open more land crossings for aid convoys and the death of more than 100 people after Israeli troops opened fire as desperate Palestinians mobbed a convoy of food trucks, the U.S. has resorted to using military aircraft to drop supplies – a more expensive, inefficient and dangerous means to deliver aid.

A Gallup poll released this week shows 58% of Americans hold a favorable view of Israel, down from 68% last year, and the lowest favorable rating for the country in over two decades.

The DFL in Minnesota wants to propose new corporate tax laws

The DFL in Minnesota wants to propose new corporate tax laws

    01:53

ST. PAUL, Minn. Some lawmakers at the Capitol say they want to shine a light on big businesses, their bottom lines and what they pay in taxes.

DFL lawmakers say the push is in pursuit of transparency, so Minnesotans know how much big corporations are paying in state taxes and any tax breaks they’re getting too.

But the IRS says federal tax return data is private — and business groups here say no other state in the country requires similar disclosures.

MORE NEWS: New bill aims to make information on Minnesota pet breeders public

The bill would require the state’s revenue department to disclose — after the corporate franchise tax return information of businesses that make $ 250 million in total U.S. sales per year.

If approved, the disclosures would apply to any company that does business in Minnesota — not just if they’re headquartered here.

“How can we make the decision about how to structure a tax code that we don’t know how it’s impacting the biggest players on our economy,” Rep. Emma Greenman, DFL-Minneapolis, said. “How can we decide how to spend our general fund revenue through either term spending or tax expenditure spending, if we don’t know who’s benefitting from the tax code we already have.”

When asked how many businesses this law would impact, Greenman said about 4,500. That would include some members of the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce that are Fortune 500 companies. The group opposes the measure saying it makes Minnesota an outlier and questioning if it would even be legal given federal tax rules.

  • Hennepin County and Minneapolis have $18 million to help low-income homeowners with ash tree removal

Hennepin County and Minneapolis have $18 million to help low-income homeowners with ash tree removal

    [ad_1]

Minneapolis and Hennepin County residents should soon have access to $18 million in federal funding to help low-income homeowners remove and replace trees infested with the emerald ash borer.

The Hennepin County Board accepted a $10 million grant Tuesday from the U.S. Forest Service, which is distributing money from the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act. Minneapolis leaders OK’d a similar $8 million grant last year.

The money will primarily be used to pay for the removal and replacement of ash trees infested with the emerald ash borer. The borer was first found in Hennepin County in 2010 and is expected to kill more than a million ash trees, roughly 15% of the county’s tree canopy.

Removing an infested ash tree can cost thousands of dollars. In Minneapolis, residents who cannot pay up front can end up having the cost added to their property taxes — driving up housing costs.

Hennepin County Board Chair Irene Fernando said she heard from so many frustrated residents about tree removal costs being added to their property taxes that she wrote to Minneapolis Park Board members in November, asking them to change course.

“It is unreasonable to place this amount of financial burden on residents,” Fernando wrote. She said the tree removal costs have a “pronounced and disparate impact” on low-income and residents of color, including in north Minneapolis where she lives.

Fernando’s November letter urged the Park Board to find state and federal funds to help offset the costs. She noted recently that the grant money heading to the county could not be used to pay for previously removed trees.

The resolution asking the County Board to approve the federal grant acknowledges that Hennepin County has some of the lowest rates of homeownership in the nation for people of color. The resolution also said that lower-income homeowners were unlikely to replace trees that were removed due to emerald ash borer because of the cost.

“We pursued this funding specifically due to the response we heard from the community about the financial burden relating to tree condemnations associated with emerald ash borer,” said John Evans of the county’s Environment and Energy Department.

The grant money should last for about five years and Hennepin County leaders plan to plant two trees for every one they remove, for a total of about 4,500 new trees, Evans said. In addition to helping low-income residents pay to remove infested ash trees, the federal grant money will be used to improve the tree canopy in neighborhoods with few mature trees and little shade.

County leaders plan to hire at least three people to help administer the grant and will also expand opportunities for residents to learn more about tree care and forestry careers, Evans said. An informational campaign about the tree replacement program is planned for later this year.

Commissioner Debbie Goettel said the grant money would also help the county reach its goal of planting a million trees. “This is wonderful and it is going to where it is needed,” Goettel said. “This couldn’t have come at a better time.”

  • Michelin stars are finally coming to Minnesota — at Gavin Kaysen’s $700 visiting chef series

Michelin stars are finally coming to Minnesota — at Gavin Kaysen’s $700 visiting chef series

    [ad_1]

If you thought Minnesota was due for some Michelin stars, you are not alone.

Gavin Kaysen is taking matters into his own hands.

A hypothetical contender for recognition from the French dining guide for his work at Spoon and Stable, Demi and Mara — should Michelin ever turn its attention to our state — Kaysen has invited three decorated chefs from other cities to Demi for a new visiting chef series, called the North Star Series. (North star, get it?)

“It is no surprise why I have chosen these teams and restaurants to come and cook with us,” Kaysen said in an announcement. “For years, they have focused on perfecting their craft of cooking and hospitality; something we believe in so much at Demi. It is also a perfect opportunity to showcase what it means to have earned a Michelin star. Our guests will have a chance to taste, and see up close, the distinct qualities of a 1-, 2- and 3-Michelin star dining experience. I am a firm believer that we are only as good as the people we surround ourselves with, and these fine professionals are some of the best there has ever been. I’m looking forward to sharing that with our guests.”

The series launches May 3 with chef Ian Palazzola and master sommelier Bobby Stuckey from one-star Boulder, Colo., restaurant Frasca Food and Wine.

On Aug. 2, Swedish chef Emma Bengtsson visits from New York City’s two-star Nordic dream Aquavit — a restaurant that’s still missed locally for its stint in downtown Minneapolis, when Marcus Samuelsson was at the helm.

And on Oct. 4, chef/director William Bradley flies in from Addison in San Diego. It’s the only three-star Michelin restaurant in Southern California.

The experience promises to be intimate, with all 20 of Demi’s seats in a U-shape around the open kitchen.

Tickets are $695 per person for each nine-course dinner, an all-inclusive price tag that covers drink pairings, service fees, tax and a gift bag. Tickets for the North Star Series go on sale on the first day of the month before the event, at exploretock.com/demi.

For perspective, a dinner at Frasca with wine pairings will run almost $400 before tax and tip, and Bengtsson’s chef’s tasting menu at Aquavit, with wine, goes for $500.

If Minnesota wants Michelin stars, be prepared to pay the price.

Reports: Broncos sign off on Russell Wilson talking to suitors

    [ad_1]

(Photo credit: Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports)

Wherever Russell Wilson cooks next, he’ll have the Denver Broncos to thank for allowing him to preheat his first trek into free agency.

According to reports Wednesday, the Broncos signed off on Wilson discussing a contract with potential employers ahead of his official release from the team next week. The head start could benefit Wilson, the most experienced signal-caller expected to be available with 204 career starts, including 16 playoff appearances. Kirk Cousins of the Minnesota Vikings has played in 150 regular-season games and five playoff games.

Wilson was informed he will be released when the 2024 NFL league year begins March 13, despite a dead-cap hit of $85 million incurred by the Broncos two years into a five-year contract.

The nine-time Pro Bowl selection turns 36 in November and goes to market only weeks before what is projected to be a very strong draft for quarterbacks.

Cut before his 2025 salary was fully guaranteed, the Broncos stand to be beneficiaries if Wilson signs elsewhere.

The Broncos can subtract any 2024 salary Wilson earns from his next employer from the $39 million check it owes to the 12-year veteran. That means if he signs a one-year, $15 million contract with a new team, the Broncos would instead make a $24 million payment to Wilson.

Wilson was acquired by the Broncos from the Seattle Seahawks prior to the 2022 season for three players and five draft choices. The Broncos then gave him a five-year, $242.5 million contract extension before he ever suited up in a game.

Benched for the last two games of the 2023 season to avoid an injury that would trigger guarantees in his contract, Wilson posted an 11-19 record in 30 starts with the Broncos.

He won 104 regular-season games and a Super Bowl as the starter in Seattle and has passed for 43,653 yards with 334 touchdowns and 106 interceptions in 188 career contests.

April 5 – 21 at The Southern Theater

Pangea World Theater presents Hecuba by Marina Carra compelling reimagining of the aftermath of the Fall of Troy, on stage at The Southern Theater in Minneapolis, April 5 – 21, 2024. Ticket info

Hecuba follows Agamemnon, the victor, as he locks horns with Hecuba, the vanquished queen. Both have suffered intimate loss — the sacrifice of a daughter and the murder of a son. In Marina Carr’s bold engagement with Euripides’ play of the same name written c. 424 BC (“the most intensely tragic of all poets” — Aristotle) there’s a demand for further bloodshed. In a brilliant display of ventriloquism, the drama weaves threads of inconsolable rage and grief with fate, revenge, and inevitable carnage. The show explores the shreds of duty and honor as well as the terrible deeds hatred breeds as it touches bravely on Hecuba’s heroic nature and “the endless tears of women.”

The Hecuba ensemble includes Suzanne Victoria Cross, Ankita Ashrit, Anne Guadagnino, Matthew Saxe, Ernest Briggs, Tyler Stamm, J. Antonio Teodro, Nathan Berglund, and Neel Shah.

Director Dipankar Mukherjee’s artistic team features lighting design by Mike Grogan, set design by Orin Herfindal, costume design by Mary Ann Kelling, composition, live music and sound design by Bethany Lacktorin, assistant direction by Sir Curtis Kirby III, with stage management by Cassi Henning.

“As artists in Pangea, we are in search of understanding the complexity of the time we live in,” said Pangea’s Artistic Director Dipankar Mukherjee. “Marina Carr’s adaptation of Hecuba opens one portal to our current truth. Mythology holds many answers and many secrets. Myth is the repository of truths, both spoken and unspoken. It is up to us to learn from them. In our search for collective accountability, moments are marked when our conscience is put on trial, as during the current moment. This can be covered up with the dust of rhetoric, but the truth never fails to stare at our face. Hecuba asks us, “Can we salvage our humanity when women and children’s bodies are weaponized in the name of war anywhere in the world?”

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

    About the Playwright

Marina Carr is an Irish playwright who has written nearly 30 plays. She came to notoriety in the 1990s and is known for writing intense and often dark plays, and for being a particularly prolific and skillful voice in Irish drama. She often writes about human tragedy, and her work often takes its inspiration from classical texts.

Carr was born in County Offaly to an artistic family and was educated at University College Dublin. In addition to Hecuba, her works include a take on Lorca’s Blood Wedding, an adaptation of Anna KareninaBy the Bog of CatsThe Map of ArgentinaPhaedra BackwardsPortia CoughlanThe MaiUllalooThis Love Thing, and The Deer Surrender.

Carr often writes about disturbing situations and unsympathetic characters. When a revival of her play On Raftery’s Hill received backlash for depicting a scene of incestuous rape, Carr told The Guardian, “The moral police will be the death of art. Political correctness is destroying our literature and our poetry. There is a place for the moral high ground, but it is not art. You can’t have the thought police looking over your shoulder when you are writing a play. You have to let the characters have their say. Plays are written with the imagination, not with the head.”

She has been Writer-in-Residence at Trinity College, the Abbey Theatre, Princeton University and was the first John McGahern Writer-in-Residence in St. Patrick’s College, Drumcondra/DCU. Marina Carr is a member of Aosdána and lives with her family in Dublin.

Recognizing the early signs of foundation damage and taking immediate action can help avoid extensive and more time-consuming repairs down the line. If you need professional assistance, be sure to visit Pinnacle Foundational Repair.

When you have a solid plan in place, you can minimize this inconvenience. By tackling the issues head-on with a clear and deliberate strategy, you’ll save both time and ensure a more effective repair.

    Key Takeaways:

    • Recognizing foundation damage early saves time.
    • Strategic planning can streamline the repair process.
    • Effective time management minimizes disruptions to daily routines.

    Assessing Foundation Damage

    Assessing Foundation Damage

Properly assessing foundation damage is a critical step in the repair process. Accurate identification and professional evaluation lay the groundwork for effective repairs.

    Signs of Foundation Damage

When examining your home for potential issues, there are several red flags you should look out for:

    • Small hairline cracks may not be a concern, but larger fissures, especially horizontal ones, indicate more significant stress.
    • Differences in elevation can suggest your foundation is settling or shifting.
    • Walls that are not plumb may be suffering from displacement.
    • Difficulty in opening or closing can be a sign that it has moved.
    • Look for gaps between walls and the ceiling or floor, and bulging or buckling of walls.
    • Unusual pooling of water or dampness might hint at cracks through which water can enter.

    Scheduling Professional Foundation Inspections

For an accurate diagnosis of foundation damage, schedule a professional inspection. Experienced inspectors can determine the severity of damage and recommend appropriate repair strategies. Make sure to:

    • Choose a qualified and reputable inspector.
    • Prepare questions about their findings and potential solutions.

    Planning Your Repair Approach

Planning Your Repair ApproachPlanning Your Repair Approach

Before initiating any foundation repair work, it’s essential to take the time to properly plan your method. Selecting the appropriate tools and materials, and understanding the specifics of soil conditions, are crucial steps that greatly influence the success of your repairs.

    Choosing the Tools and Materials

When embarking on foundation repairs, having the right tools and materials on hand is vital. You’ll need:

    • Concrete: for strong, durable patching of cracks and rebuilding affected areas.
    • Epoxy: efficient for filling hairline fractures due to its adhesive properties.
    • Sealant: specifically polyurethane, which is used to waterproof and seal joints and cracks.
    • Mortar: for repointing and fixing masonry components in your foundation.

Soil Conditions and Impact on Foundations

Soil conditions can drastically impact the integrity of your foundation.

    Key factors include:

    • Clay, silt, sand, or loam—each reacts differently to moisture and load.
    • Excess moisture or dryness can cause soil to expand or contract.

    Executing Foundation Repairs

    Executing Foundation RepairsExecuting Foundation Repairs

When undertaking repairs, you must address all foundation concerns systematically. Focusing on cracks, reinforcing structural integrity, and implementing preventative measures against water damage is critical for maintaining a durable structure.

When considering foundation repairs, it’s crucial to address any issues with the ground’s stability to prevent future damage to your property, including preparing the terrain for installing a pool.

    Addressing Cracks and Structural Concerns

Inspect your foundation walls for any cracks or signs of damage. For minor cracks on a concrete surface, epoxy injections are a reliable solution that can seal and restore the integrity of the area.

For larger, more concerning cracks, combining epoxy with carbon fiber strips can add the necessary strength. Always ensure repairs go beyond the surface level and address the root cause to prevent recurrence.

    Reinforcing Foundation Strength and Durability

After addressing any immediate concerns, the next step is reinforcing the strength and durability. If your foundation walls are compromised, consider options such as carbon fiber or steel braces to increase structural stability. Regularly inspect for signs of rust that can weaken metal supports and act quickly by applying rust-inhibiting solutions to maintain their strength.

    Waterproofing and Preventing Future Issues

Lastly, waterproofing is crucial to prevent mold, floods, and further foundation damage. Apply a waterproof coating to the outside of walls to mitigate water penetration. Ensure proper drainage away from the base of your home, because consistent water exposure can aggressively deteriorate materials, causing long-term issues.

Finalizing and Reviewing the Repair Work

Finalizing and Reviewing the Repair WorkFinalizing and Reviewing the Repair Work

As the foundation repair project concludes, it’s crucial to focus on the integrity of the work performed and evaluate the cost and time efficiency. Here’s how you can address these aspects:

    Ensuring Integrity Through Post-Repair Inspection

After the completion of repairs, your chosen repair company should conduct a thorough post-repair inspection. This step is critical to ensuring that the structural integrity meets the required standards. The experts must examine all repaired areas for the following:

    • Stability
    • Compliance with all relevant building codes
    • No residual signs of damage or stress

    Checklist for Post-Repair Inspection:

    • Visual Assessment: Confirm no visible defects or incomplete work.
    • Documentation Review: Ensure that all repair work is well-documented with before-and-after scenarios.
    • Expert Analysis: Have the results interpreted by a professional to confirm that all issues have been addressed.

Reviewing Repair Costs and Time Efficiency

Lastly, evaluate if the repair costs align with initial quotes and assess whether the time taken for completion was reasonable. This will aid in understanding how the project fared against your expectations and industry standards.

Repair Costs: Request an itemized breakdown of expenses and compare them against the initial estimate.

    • Materials costs
    • Labor hours
    • Miscellaneous fees (permits, inspections, etc.)

Time Efficiency: Consider if the project was completed within the projected time frame.

    • Planned duration vs. actual duration
    • Causes for any delays
    • Responsiveness of the repair team to time-sensitive issues

    Strategic Planning and Advice

General officers are instrumental in strategic planning and providing military advice to national leaders. They analyze potential threats, create military strategies to deter or contain conflicts, and ensure the U.S. military remains a dominant force globally. Generals engage in complex evaluations of geopolitical situations and defense resources, offering expert advice to the President, Secretary of Defense, and National Security Council to shape the nation’s military and security policies.

    How To Become A General?

    Army general numbersArmy general numbers

Individuals may obtain a commission in the United States Army, Air Force, and other branches through several avenues. The United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point and the Air Force Academy offer rigorous four-year programs culminating in a Bachelor of Science degree and a commission as a second lieutenant.

Alternatively, students may enroll in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) at civilian colleges, leading to a commission upon graduation. There’s also the Officer Candidate School (OCS) that serves college graduates who did not participate in ROTC or attend a military academy.

    Promotion and Advancement

The trajectory from officer to general is marked by successive promotions, typically beginning as a second lieutenant. Officers are evaluated on their leadership abilities, job performance, and potential to handle greater responsibilities.

Promotion to general officer ranks— brigadier general, major general, lieutenant general, and general—requires a demonstrated record of exceptional service, leadership, and the endorsement of senior military leadership.

Each promotion brings increased responsibility and typically involves a selection board process.

    Senior Leadership Selection

To reach the general officer ranks in the United States military, officers must distinguish themselves markedly from their peers.

The selection for one-star general and above is a highly competitive process, influenced by an officer’s service record, leadership performance, education, and professional military education.

These selections are often approved at the highest levels, including the Department of Defense and the President of the United States. Advancement to four-star general requires nomination by the President and confirmation by the Senate.

The roles and responsibilities of general officers vary significantly across different services and commands within the Army and the Air Force.

The United States Army has had many generals who played pivotal roles in shaping world history through their military leadership and strategic acumen. During World War II, General Dwight D. Eisenhower served as Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in Western Europe, orchestrating the successful D-Day invasion and subsequently the defeat of Nazi Germany as per National Archives.

Another significant figure was General George C. Marshall, who, as Army Chief of Staff during World War II, oversaw the U.S. Army’s expansion from a modest force to one of the most powerful in history. He later served as Secretary of State, crafting the Marshall Plan which helped to rebuild Europe after the war.

Moving towards a more contemporary context, General Lloyd J. Austin’s pioneering leadership merits mention.

He was the first African American to command an American combat brigade in Iraq, and later, the United States Central Command. Austin’s strategies were influential in the fight against the Islamic State.

    General Combat Role Notable Achievement
Dwight D. Eisenhower Supreme Commander, Europe Led D-Day, defeated Nazi Germany
George C. Marshall Army Chief of Staff Expanded U.S. Army during WWII
Vincent K. Brooks Commander, U.S. Army Pacific Managed military relations with China
Lloyd J. Austin Commander of U.S. Central Command First African American combat brigade commander in Iraq, opposed Islamic State

General Vincent K. Brooks, as the Commander of the U.S. Army Pacific, had a significant role in managing military relations with China, ensuring regional security through diplomatic and military channels.

Generals of the United States Army have been essential in executing wartime strategies and maintaining global peace and security. Their roles often transcended beyond mere combat, impacting diplomatic and geopolitical landscapes worldwide.

    Retirement and Post-Military Careers

US military rank distributionUS military rank distribution

Upon retiring from the military, many generals transition to new career paths, leveraging their leadership experience and extensive networks. Retirement from military service often comes with a transition period where these leaders must navigate their entry into civilian roles.

    Career Paths

    • A significant number find opportunities within the defense industry. Many retired four-star officers take on roles as board members or advisers to various defense contractors.
    • Some generals pursue federal civil service positions, which allow them to continue contributing to government operations outside of uniformed service.

    Statistics

    •  While definitive numbers vary, reports indicate a pattern of military leaders joining the defense industry. For example, a Government Accountability Office report noted that over 1,700 military and government officials transitioned to the defense sector over five years according to Responsible Statecraft.

    Challenges and Considerations:

    • The transition from military to civilian roles, especially in the defense industry, is often scrutinized to ensure ethical compliance and the avoidance of conflicts of interest.
    • Adapting to the civilian sector can be challenging, requiring generals to acclimate to different organizational cultures and operational tempos.

    Military and Defense Budget

US military defense budgetUS military defense budget

The pay grade of military personnel, including generals, is an integral part of the defense budget. Generals are at the top of the military pay scale, receiving salaries under their rank and years of service. In addition to the base pay, they are eligible for various allowances and benefits, which can include housing, healthcare, and retirement plans.

These compensations are part of the overall budget managed by the Department of Defense and are factored into the annual financial planning for the military.

Funding for these expenses comes from the overall defense budget, which includes both the base defense budget and supplemental war funding.

The Defense Health Agency, for instance, is responsible for the administration of healthcare benefits to service members, which is a significant line item in the overall budget. Pay grades and associated allowances are categorized and standardized across the military branches to ensure uniformity and equity in compensation.

    Legislative and Civilian Oversight

US military leadership rolesUS military leadership roles

The Senate Armed Services Committee plays a critical role in overseeing the U.S. military, including its general officers.

This committee is responsible for holding hearings that review and evaluate military activities and policy, and it also considers nominations of the President for positions such as Secretary of Defense and the Joint Chiefs of Staff as reflected in this source.

Detailed discussions and testimonies can focus on the appropriateness of the number of generals based on current defense strategies and global commitments.

    National Defense Authorization Act

The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) is a key piece of legislation that specifies the budget and expenditures of the Department of Defense. One of its purposes is to regulate the size and structure of the military, which may include a stipulation on the number of generals.

For example, the 2017 NDAA included a provision to reduce the number of generals, aiming to streamline military efficiency and adapt to modern needs.

    Role of the President

The President of the United States, as Commander-in-Chief, wields direct authority over the military but works within the constraints of policies and laws enacted by Congress. The President’s influence extends to appointing the most senior military leaders, upon the advice and consent of the Senate, thereby influencing military practices and the culture of leadership. Civilian control is further maintained by the President’s ability to set broader defense-related policies that shape military operations and strategy.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What are the different ranks of generals in the U.S. Military?

In the U.S. Military, the general officer ranks are categorized loosely from one-star to four-star: Brigadier General (one-star), Major General (two-star), Lieutenant General (three-star), and General (four-star). The U.S. Army, Air Force, and Marine Corps use this ranking structure, whereas the Navy equivalent would be Rear Admiral lower half to Admiral.

How many officers attain the rank of 5-star general?

The five-star rank, formally known as General of the Army or Fleet Admiral, is a special wartime designation with only nine individuals ever promoted to this level in U.S. history. No officers currently hold this rank as it was last awarded in the mid-20th century, following World War II.

What is the total number of active 4-star generals currently serving?

The exact number of active four-star generals fluctuates based on retirements and new appointments. As of the last publicly available information, there are generally around 40 to 44 active four-star officers across all military branches.

Who holds the highest command position in the U.S. Military?

The highest military command position in the U.S. Military is the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. This position is held by a four-star general or admiral who serves as the principal military advisor to the President, the Secretary of Defense, and the National Security Council.

How does the number of 1-star and 2-star generals compare in the U.S. Army?

In the U.S. Army, there tends to be a larger number of one-star and two-star generals compared to their three-star and four-star counterparts. For instance, there are over a hundred in each rank of one-star and two-star generals, with precise numbers varying due to changes in military structure and retirements.

Has there ever been a 6-star general, and if so, who was it?

The rank of a six-star general has never been authorized or used in the U.S. Military. However, it’s worth noting that General George Washington was posthumously awarded the title of General of the Armies of the United States, which is often informally mentioned as equivalent to a six-star rank to honor his leadership during the Revolutionary War.

    Final Words

General officers in the U.S. Military are pivotal to national defense and global security. Their strategic leadership, extensive responsibilities, and commitment to service underpin the effectiveness and readiness of the armed forces.

As defense challenges evolve, so will the roles of these high-ranking officers, ensuring the U.S. Military remains adaptable and capable of addressing future threats.

  • Xavier Johnson, Indiana improving ahead of trip to Minnesota

Xavier Johnson, Indiana improving ahead of trip to Minnesota

(Photo credit: Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports)

Despite what the standings say, both Indiana and Minnesota have hope for a late-season surge that could propel them into NCAA Tournament consideration as they meet Wednesday in Minneapolis.

It’s been a frustrating season for the Hoosiers (16-13, 8-10 Big Ten), but the return of senior point guard Xavier Johnson has provided some spark and hope the last two games.

With Johnson back in the lineup after missing six games with an elbow injury, Indiana beat Wisconsin 74-70 at home and won 83-78 at Maryland on Sunday to move to ninth in the Big Ten standings.

If Johnson can remain on the court and be impactful, Indiana might not be quite dead yet.

“We’ve struggled to put the ball in the hole,” Indiana head coach Mike Woodson said. “(Sunday), it call came together a little bit. I think ‘X’ had a lot to do with it there and taking some of the pressure off of Gabe (Cupps). Gabe got off to a great start for us, but I just thought ‘X’ was Xavier Johnson. He did a lot of good things on the floor from a defensive standpoint and controlled the game out front with him and (Trey Galloway), our two seniors. I’ve missed that this season. I really have.”

On the other side, Minnesota (18-11, 9-9) might be the most improved team in the league this year. The Golden Gophers won just two league games a season ago.

The Golden Gophers are coming off a 75-70 home win over Penn State, a game that saw Minnesota rally from 23 points down in the second half.

Minnesota entered Tuesday No. 77 in the NET rankings largely because of a soft nonconference schedule, but a strong finish to the season could put the Golden Gophers back in the discussion for a tournament berth.

“The last week of the season, everybody is on edge,” Minnesota head coach Ben Johnson said. “Everybody is playing for something, and you have to respond to that. You have to be at that level or a little bit more.”

  • Registration opens to runners for this year’s Twin Cities Marathon

Registration opens to runners for this year’s Twin Cities Marathon

    [ad_1]

Registration opened to the public Tuesday for the Twin Cities Marathon.

The field already had 3,300 marathoners signed up. Some are last year’s runners who missed out after the race was canceled by an intense heat forecast. They were given a special window to register late last year. There also was an early bird promotion Jan. 1, according to the race organizer, Twin Cities in Motion (TCM).

TCM spokesperson Charlie Mahler said Tuesday’s response was positive.

“We are pleased by the registration we have seen so far,” said Mahler, who added that TCM expects the marathon to sellout with 12,000 runners.

Another 8,000 are anticipated in the popular TC 10-Mile run. The lottery drawing for entry is in June. TCM also hosts marathon weekend races, including a 10-kilometer run and a 5K that draws thousands more.

Mahler said TCM is “doubly eager” to have a great marathon Oct. 6 after last year’s last-minute cancellation — the first in race history.

“I think like for a lot of runners the TCM staffers have a year and a half of pent-up marathon energy we didn’t get to experience last year in the way we wanted to experience it,” Mahler said.

For a limited time only, you can now buy a ticket to get slimed at Nickelodeon Universe

    [ad_1]

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. — Spring break is here or almost here, which for many is a time to relax and have fun. For others, it may just be the perfect time to fulfill a childhood dream of getting doused in Nickelodeon’s trademark green slime.

“We usually do a staycation. My kids are pretty little. I don’t think I’m ready for all the traveling yet,” said Christina Mueller, of Cottage Grove.

There are signs everywhere that parents and kids are ready from a spring break dance to some thoughts on schoolwork.

“School is kind of too much, you know we just finished with finals,” said high school student Dion Thomas, of Woodbury.

But if you’re not planning a trip out of town, there are plenty of options in town to keep busy.

“It’s a time that we really enjoy seeing people come from all over the place to experience some of the new offerings that we have. Limited offerings, a limited ‘slime’ only, but it’s a lot of fun,” Chris Grap, Vice President of Experiential for Nickelodeon Universe at Mall of America, said.

Nickelodeon Universe at Mall of America is offering a variety of experiences for Spring Break because, as 11-year-old Jackson Nelson puts it, “Sometimes it gets boring in the spring.”

For littles who love Paw Patrol, there’s a new stage show called “Pups Off Patrol,” or “what do the pups do when they’re not tracking down Chickaletta or saving the day,” according to Grap.

Ride lovers have a new option which is about to open called “Fly with Opa.”

“That ride is a serene journey on the back of a sky bison, made for families as you circle around a highly themed and wooded area. It fits really well with the theme of Avatar: The Last Airbender,” said Grap.

This 80s kid was drawn to a big new experience synonymous with Nickelodeon: Slime Central.

“Over my last 12 years here, we’ve had celebrities get slimed, we’ve had winners of the Double Dare stage show get slimed, but this is the first time guests can choose to buy a ticket and be slimed, and we’re really excited to offer that. I have been slimed before. It is a unique experience that almost defies description,” said Grap.

“Double Dare” host Marc Summers offered his rating of WCCO anchor Derek James’s own test sliming.

“On a scale of one to ten, I give it a seven-plus,” said Summers, who is currently starring in a one-man off-Broadway show, “The Life and Slimes of Marc Summers” at New World Stages in New York City.

James described the slime as “cold,” but added the experience “warmed me as it took me back to childhood.”

You can get slimed at Nickelodeon Universe at Mall of America on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays through April 14. It’s $45 per person or $55 for two people. Time slots need to be booked online or at the West Guest Service desk in advance.

Disclosure: Nickelodeon is owned by Paramount, as is CBS News and WCCO.
