It’s a canon event for incoming freshmen to enter college a little overconfident after excelling at challenging AP courses in high school.

While it’s normal to take five to eight different classes at once in high school, in college, taking too many credits, loading up on difficult coursework, and trying to stay on top of a demanding schedule quickly shatters that confidence and can leave freshmen and sophomore students spiraling, in need of a lifeline.

That all-too-common experience is exactly what led Steven Keys and Marty Parks to create CramBetter, a new kind of tutoring service to meet students where they are and lead them to academic success.

SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, FLA. (WSVN) – Exclusive surveillance camera footage captured a trio of thieves opening a bank of mailboxes and stealing mail from a Southwest Miami-Dade neighborhood.

The theft occurred in the Kendall Square neighborhood, at the intersection of Southwest 95th Street and 169th Place, in the early morning hours of Feb. 19th.

Footage showed the thieves using a key to unlock the mailboxes and take as much mail as possible.

Residents watched the surveillance video and expressed concern about the break-in.

“That’s concerned me, but that never had [happened] before,” said Daniela Altuve.

“They opened it very effortlessly, all the mailboxes at once,” said Matthew Escobar. “They were dressed in all black, and you can’t really see their skin color or anything, or their face, and yeah, just all black, covered completely head to toe.”

The crime was pulled off without causing damage.

Residents told 7News that the perpetrators needed to be caught because they believe the trio behind the crime are professionals and they could strike again.

“I think they’re definitely some kind of career criminal type of people,” said Escobar.

“It’s sad because this community is very, very safe,” said Altuve.

7News reached out to the United States Postal Service’s Miami office but has not heard back.

The University of Miami has announced that Patricia Sánchez Abril, J.D., has been appointed as the new dean for the School of Law. 

Abril has served the University of Miami for over 21 years. Throughout her time she served as a professor, vice dean of Graduate Business Education, associate and interim dean of the University of Miami’s Graduate School, and interim dean of the School of Law.

She has served as Interim Dean of the School of Law since April of 2024, and is officially dean effective as of Feb. 18, 2026. 

According to the email announcement from UM President, Joseph Echevarria, as interim dean Abril advanced academic priorities and promoted student success. She did this by working closely with faculty, staff, students and alumni creating a collaborative community. 

Echeveria also notes that as dean, Abril will lead the School of Law’s academic mission and external engagement and focus on faculty excellence, learning objectives, and enhancing the school’s national profile. 

Abril did not respond to a request for comment.

WASHINGTON (AP) – The United States has ordered nonessential diplomats and their family members to leave Lebanon, a State Department official said Monday, as tensions over Iran rise with the threat of a potentially imminent military strike.

The official said a continuous assessment of the regional security environment determined it was “prudent” to draw down the U.S. Embassy’s footprint so that only essential personnel remained at their posts.

The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the move had not yet been formally announced, said that it is a temporary measure and that the embassy remained operational Monday.

A second department official, also speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss plans that had not been formally announced, said Secretary of State Marco Rubio may delay his intended visits to Israel this weekend.

Six renowned and celebrated graduates of Miami-Dade’s public schools were inducted recently into Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ (M-DCPS) Alumni Hall of Fame for their post-secondary and professional achievements.

The ceremony, held at the Hotel Beaux Arts, brought together district representatives, school board members, alumni, and their families to celebrate the values that define M-DCPS excellence, innovation, choice, and safety.

With this year’s honorees, the Alumni Hall of Fame now includes 74 distinguished members whose accomplishments illuminate the extraordinary talent cultivated in our public schools and now shining brightly on the national and international stage.

Representing the Class of 2026, the inductees reflect the rich history, diversity, and success of Miami-Dade’s graduates:

Sheldon T. Anderson, a graduate of Miami Killian Senior High, Class of 1968, has built a distinguished career in finance. He serves as chair of Grove Bank & Trust and previously led the Southeast Region of Northern Trust as president and CEO. His accomplishments have earned him the Mosaic Miami Silver Medallion Award, and he is an alumnus of The Ohio State University.

John H. Dasburg, a Miami Senior High alumnus from the Class of 1961, has served in some of the highest leadership roles in corporate America. He is the former CEO of Northwest Airlines, as well as former chair and CEO of Astar Air Cargo and Burger King Corporation. His national influence also includes service on the 1991 White House Fellows Committee. Dasburg is a graduate of the University of Florida.

Jaret L. Davis, Miami Killian Senior High Class of 1992, is recognized as one of Miami’s leading business and legal innovators. As senior vice president of Greenberg Traurig PA, and co-founder of and general counsel to eMerge Americas, he has been instrumental in positioning Miami as a global tech hub. His commitment to equal access to justice was recently honored with the 2024 Equal Justice Leadership Award from Legal Services of Greater Miami. Davis is a graduate of the University of Miami.

Katherine Fernandez Rundle, a Miami Palmetto Senior High graduate from the Class of 1968, made history as the first Cuban American State Attorney in both Miami-Dade County and the State of Florida. A trailblazer for community safety and justice, she established a multiagency task force focused on combatting child sex trafficking and served as the first female president of the Cuban American Bar Association. She earned degrees from the University of Miami and the University of Cambridge Law School.

Marie Ferdinand-Harris, an alumna of Miami Edison Senior High, Class of 1997, is celebrated for her athletic excellence as a three-time WNBA All-Star and USA Gold Medalist.

Beyond her sports achievements, she is the founder of the BeLikeCJ Foundation and a member of the Louisiana State University Athletic Hall of Fame. She is also a graduate of Louisiana State University.

Carlos A. Migoya, Miami Senior High Class of 1967, currently serves as CEO of Jackson Health System, one of the nation’s premier public hospital networks. His prior leadership roles include serving as CEO of Wachovia Corporation, and he is an active member of the Florida Chamber of Commerce Board. Recent warming peaked on Sunday with record heat in both Miami and Ft. Lauderdale (nearly hitting 90-degrees)! It was a summer preview and something we’ll get used to feeling, in about 3 months.

By Sunday evening, a strong Cold Front crossed the region and now (you might say) “winter is waking up”. Here’s a look at what you’ll be waking up to over the next few days. These are the forecast lows, shown below.

Monday will be a day with bright sunshine, but with much colder air arriving from the north and northwest. Gusty winds will add to the chilly change.

The occasionally strong winds (gusts to 35 mph) will set the stage for a serious Brush Fire threat. Keep in mind, we’re in a deep severe drought and this dry-windy combination could lead to any fires getting out of hand quickly. Use caution and be aware that all of south Florida is under a Brush Fire Warning Monday (9 AM – 7 PM, with the latest alert). The next chance for rain showers won’t be until later in the week, which is also when we feel the return of warmer air. Once High Pressure heads away from Florida, moving into the Atlantic, we’ll get the swing in temperatures. By Thursday and Friday, most of you will put away jackets and sweaters, once again.

Miami women’s basketball pulled away in the second quarter and held off the California Golden Bears in a 69-60 matchup on Sunday at the Watsco Center, extending their late season surge with three wins in a row. 

Cal struck first, with an early 3-pointer from guard Gisella Maul. But the Hurricanes responded back right with a series of layups, but ended the quarter trailing the Golden Bears by one. 

Miami then flipped the game in the second quarter. The Canes opened with a strong burst, getting a layup from Ra Shaya Kyle, then back-to-back buckets from Vittoria Blasigh and a jumper from Gal Raviv to build a 23-15 lead.

They kept stretching their lead with second chance points, with Ahnay Adams hitting a late 3-pointer to get the Canes to a 35-27 halftime lead. 

After the break, Cal made a big push. They cut Miami’s lead to 35-33 on a three from Aliyahna Morris. Miami answered with a steady run inside, getting baskets from Adams, Kyle, and Natalie Wetzel to push the lead out. 

Miami protected their 54-46 lead early in the fourth quarter, and went up by 11 after Kyle converted 3-point-play on a layup inside. Cal trimmed the deficit to 60-55 midway through, but Miami delivered the knockout stretch. 

Raviv drilled a three, followed by another from Blasigh to push the lead back to 11. Cal got within seven again but the Canes closed it out at the line for the 69-60 win. 

Kyle and Adams controlled much of the game for Miami. Adams finished with 10 points and six assists, while Blasigh added 12 and Raviv 14. Miami shot 50% from the field and hit seven out of ten from the 3-point line. 

Miami head coach Tricia Cullop noted in the press conference after the game that the team has improved over the course of a year, but it’s still not enough. 

“I don’t want us to be happy with that. I’m not happy that we don’t have more than that to this point. “ Cullop said, “But I want us to continue, want to get better, and head into the conference tournament on a really high note, feeling really good about what we were playing, and fixing things still that we’re not doing as well.”

The Canes play their final home game against Pitt on Thursday Feb. 26. Tip off is at 7 p.m.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — The Mexican army killed the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, “El Mencho, ” on Sunday, decapitating what had become Mexico’s most powerful cartel and giving the government its biggest prize yet to show the Trump administration for its efforts.

Oseguera Cervantes was wounded in an operation to capture him Sunday in Tapalpa, Jalisco about two hours drive southwest of Guadalajara Sunday and died while being flown to Mexico City, the Defense Department said in a statement. The state is the base of the cartel known for trafficking huge quantities of fentanyl and other drugs to the United States.

During the operation, troops came under fire and killed four people at the location. Three more people, including Oseguera Cervantes, were wounded and later died, the statement said. Two others were arrested and armored vehicles, rocket launchers and other arms were seized. Three members of the armed forces were wounded and receiving medical treatment.

Roadblocks and burning vehicles

The killing of the powerful drug lord set off several hours of roadblocks with burning vehicles in Jalisco and other states. Such tactics are commonly used by the cartels to block military operations.

Videos circulating social media showed plumes of smoke billowing over the tourist city of Puerto Vallarta in Jalisco, and people sprinting through the airport of the state’s capital in panic. On Sunday afternoon, Air Canada announced it was suspending flights to Puerto Vallarta “due to an ongoing security situation” and advised customers not to go to their airport.

US had offered up to $15 million for his capture

The U.S. State Department had offered a reward of up to $15 million for information leading to the arrest of El Mencho. The Jalisco New Generation Cartel, known as CJNG, is one of the most powerful and fastest growing criminal organizations in Mexico and was born in 2009.

In February, the Trump administration designated the cartel as a foreign terrorist organization.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, like her predecessor, has criticized the “kingpin” strategy of previous administrations that took out cartel leaders only to trigger explosions of violence as cartels fractured. While she has remained popular in Mexico, security is a persistent concern and since U.S. President Donald Trump took office a year ago, she has been under tremendous pressure to show results against drug trafficking.

Known as aggressive cartel

The Jalisco cartel has been one of the most aggressive cartels in its attacks on the military — including on helicopters — and is a pioneer in launching explosives from drones and installing mines. In 2020, it carried out a spectacular assassination attempt with grenades and high-powered rifles in the heart of Mexico City against the then head of the capital’s police force and now federal security secretary.

The DEA considers the cartel to be as powerful as the Sinaloa cartel, one of Mexico’s most infamous criminal groups, with a presence in all 50 U.S. states. It is one of the main suppliers of cocaine to the U.S. market and, like the Sinaloa cartel, earns billions from the production of fentanyl and methamphetamines. Sinaloa, however, has been weakened by infighting after the loss of its leaders Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada and Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, both in U.S. custody.

Oseguera Cervantes has been significantly involved in drug trafficking activities since the 1990s. He was convicted of conspiracy to distribute heroin in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California in 1994 and served nearly three years in prison. Following his release from custody, Oseguera Cervantes returned to Mexico and reengaged in drug trafficking activity.

Since 2017, Oseguera Cervantes has been indicted several times in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia.

The most recent superseding indictment, filed on April 5, 2022, charges Oseguera Cervantes with conspiracy and distribution of controlled substances (methamphetamine, cocaine, and fentanyl) for the purpose of illegal importation into the United States and use of firearms during and in connection with drug trafficking offenses. Oseguera Cervantes is also charged under the Drug Kingpin Enforcement Act for directing a continuing criminal enterprise.

The U.S. State Department warned U.S. citizens in Jalisco, Tamaulipas, Michoacan, Guerrero and Nuevo Leon states to remain in safe places due to the ongoing security operations.

Tied at 83-83 with 3.6 seconds remaining, Virginia’s Chance Mallory was sent to the free throw line.

The Hurricanes have been no stranger to late game heroics themselves, with their previous two wins coming by one point each.

But Miami wasn’t able to make it three storybook wins in a row, as Mallory hit all three free throws to ice the game 86-83 in favor of the Cavaliers.

No.14 Virginia fell behind initially to the red-hot Canes on Saturday at John Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Va.. 

The Cavaliers opened the first half with an early 11-7 lead, but the Canes quickly responded with a 17-2 run to take a 24-13 advantage. Miami shot 56.7% from the field and 62.5% from beyond the arc during that stretch. Freshman Shelton Henderson led the surge with an early eight points. 

The remainder of the half turned into a back and forth battle between the Hurricanes and Cavaliers. With the game tied at 39-39 and 40 seconds remaining, Tru Washington knocked down his third 3-pointer of the half, and Timo Malovec converted a fast break layup to give Miami a 44-39 lead at halftime. 

Virginia set the tone to start the second half with an 11-2 run, but Miami answered, cutting the deficit to 59-57 with 11:53 remaining. The Cavaliers responded once again with another 11-2 run, forcing Miami, down by seven, to call a time out. 

Out of the break, Tre Donaldson sparked a 13-2 run, hitting a 3-pointer to give the Hurricanes a 73-70 lead with five minutes remaining. Trailing by four points in the closing minutes, Miami battled back to tie the game at 83-83. 

But with 3.6 seconds left, the Canes committed a foul beyond the arc, sending Virginia’s Mallory to the free throw line.

Mallory calmly drained all three from the line, sealing the win for Virginia, 86-83. 

Donaldson and Henderson each led Miami with 18 points, while Malik Reneau added 16. Washington contributed 15 points and seven assists off the bench, and Ernest Udeh Jr. recorded nine rounds and eight points, going 6-for-6 on the free throw line. 

In the second half, the Hurricanes shot 12-of-31 from field goal, 4-of-10 from the three point range, and 11-of-11 from the free throw line, finishing the game at  a season high of 94.1 percent at the line. Turnovers ultimately made the difference. Miami committed nine turnovers, which Virginia converted into 14 points. 

Miami now sits third in ACC conference with a record of 21-6. Under first-year head coach Jai Lucas, The Hurricanes have transformed into a legitimate March contender after entering the season with uncertainty. 

Last season (2024-2025), Miami finished last in the ACC with a 3-17 conference record and failed to win a road game. This year, Lucas has reshaped the program’s identity, emphasizing points in the paint, offensive rebounding and efficiency at the free throw line while building a stronger defensive foundation. 

Key contributors this season include Reneau, who is averaging 19.5 points per game; Udeh Jr., who averages 9.5 rebounds per game and Donaldson, who leads the team with 5.9 assists per game. The Hurricanes’ renewed culture has positioned themselves with a chance to make it far in March Madness.

Miami will remain on the road and will match up against Florida State on Tuesday in Tallahassee at 9 p.m.

MIAMI GARDENS, FLA. (WSVN) – A family is in mourning after the loss of a father of six in a shooting on the sidewalk of a Miami Gardens home Friday.

“Gabriel Floyd Hubbard, a man of God,” said Guerla Hubbard, Gabriel’s wife “He’s not supposed to be dead.”

“In the mighty name of Jesus,” said Gabriel in a video. “We thank you for your spirit, your spirit of peace.”

Surveillance video captured the shooting of Gabriel in front of his home near the 3500 block of Northwest 24th Street on Friday.

Shocked neighbors screamed and ran for safety seconds after the deadly shooting.

“I saw a big van driving west, into 37th Avenue, and my neighbor laid on the floor,” said Adrian Victoria, a neighbor of the Hubberts.

“This is surreal,” said Guerla. “My husband was a good person.”

“Really nice guy, really kind guy,” said Victoria.

Guerla described the deadly encounter at their door.

“Someone knocked on our door, and I rushed to the door, and saw him laid out,” she said. “He was a son, a great husband, beautiful soul.”

An investigation is ongoing as detectives search for those involved.

Miami Hurricanes men’s tennis remains undefeated at home taking their last game before conference play with a 4-0 against the FGCU Eagles. In a packed Neil Schiff Tennis center, Miami had another dominant day at home to boost the Hurricanes to 7-2 and give Miami their fourth sweep of the season. 

Things got off to a great start in doubles with the senior Antonio Prat and the junior Jakub Kroslak. The two teamed up for the first time and put up a dominant showing winning 6-0 at the top court. This is now Prat’s second straight win in doubles coming back from dropping eight of his last nine when paired up. Over on court three, seniors Nacho Serra Sanchez and Saud Alhogbani wrapped things up with a 6-4 win. 

Singles were just as good for Miami and were over as fast as they started. Kroslak continued his strong day as the Slovakian, Middle Tennessee transfer earned a court three win 6-3, 6-3 to extend the lead for Miami. Rafael Segado dominated Stavros Hadjivarnava forcing him to retire after a 6-4 win, and a 3-0 start to give Miami another point. 

Finally, No. 100 Prat clinched the win for Miami. His 6-3, 6-4 win ended Miami’s final game before ACC play. It also boosts their home winning streak to 20 games, going back to last season.

At 7-0 this year and 13-0 last year the Neil Schiff Tennis Center has proven to be a massive asset for the Hurricanes who play another eight games at home the rest of the year. 

After non-conference play the Hurricanes sit at 61 in the ITA Intercollegiate Rankings. Miami has a match against Delaware on March 25, but from here on out Miami will be taking on ACC opponents the first two of which will be on the road.

Their first ACC matchup will be the No. 67 Louisville Cardinals who sit at 9-4 after dropping a match to Middle Tennessee State. The match is Friday Feb. 27 in Louisville, Kentucky.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — NASA’s new moon rocket suffered another setback Saturday, almost certain to bump astronauts’ first lunar trip in decades into spring.

The space agency revealed the latest problem just one day after targeting March 6 for the Artemis II mission, humanity’s first flight to the moon in more than half a century. Overnight, the flow of helium to the rocket’s upper stage was interrupted, officials said. Solid helium flow is essential for purging the engines and pressurizing the fuel tanks.

This helium issue has nothing to do with the hydrogen fuel leaks that marred a countdown dress rehearsal of the Space Launch System rocket earlier this month and forced a repeat test.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said a bad filter, valve or connection plate could be to blame for the stalled helium flow. Regardless of the cause, he noted, the only way to access the area and fix the problem is in the Vehicle Assembly Building at Kennedy Space Center.

“We will begin preparations for rollback, and this will take the March launch window out of consideration,” Isaacman said via X. NASA’s next opportunities would be at the beginning or end of April.

Earlier in the morning, NASA said it was preparing to return the 322-foot (98-meter) rocket to its hangar for repairs, while raising the possibility of the work being done at the pad.

“I understand people are disappointed by this development,” Isaacman said. “That disappointment is felt most by the team at NASA, who have been working tirelessly to prepare for this great endeavor.”

Hydrogen fuel leaks had already delayed the Artemis II lunar fly-around by a month. A second fueling test on Thursday revealed hardly any leaks, giving managers the confidence to aim for a March liftoff. The four astronauts went into their two-week quarantine Friday night, mandatory for avoiding germs.

The interrupted helium flow is confined to the SLS rocket’s interim cryogenic propulsion stage. This upper stage is essential for placing the Orion crew capsule into the proper high-altitude orbit around Earth for checkout, following liftoff. After that, it’s supposed to separate from Orion and serve as a target for the astronauts inside the capsule, allowing them to practice docking techniques for future moon missions.

During NASA’s Apollo program, 24 astronauts flew to the moon from 1968 through 1972. The new Artemis program has completed only one flight so far, a lunar-orbiting mission without a crew in 2022. That first test flight was also plagued by hydrogen fuel leaks before blasting off, as well as a helium issue similar to the one that arose Saturday. The first moon landing with a crew under Artemis is still at least a few years away.
