The Miami Hurricanes climbed the rankings again this week after stomping the Florida Gators, 26-7. UM now sits at No. 2 in the latest AP Poll— their highest position since 2017.
The Hurricanes defense dominated the Gator offense, holding them to only seven points. The Florida passing game was disastrous with quarterback DJ Lagway throwing for only 61 yards, no touchdowns and only completing 12 out of 23 throwing attempts. Miami’s 3rd down defense was impeccable, stopping the Gators on all of their 13 attempts.
On the offensive side of the ball, it was a rough day for Miami quarterback Carson Beck. While the young season has been great for Beck, with many sites having him as the Heisman favorite going into the weekend, he only threw for 160 yards with no touchdowns and one interception.
With Beck having an off night, the running backs needed to step up and they answered the call.
Junior Mark Fletcher Jr. and redshirt sophomore CharMar “Marty” Brown had themselves a night with Fletcher rushing for 116 yards and a touchdown and Brown rushing for 80 yards and two touchdowns along with 53 yards receiving yards, making him Miami’s top receiver of the game.
After their 4-0 start, UM will look to avoid what happened last time they were ranked No. 2, when they lost to unranked Pittsburgh late in the 2017 season.
Miami is on bye next week, but after that will be their toughest test of the season, facing No. 8 Florida State in a Top-10 matchup in Tallahassee. The game will likely attract College Gameday for their second Miami game of the season.

Currently ranked No.3 in the ACC, the Miami women’s volleyball team secures a dominant victory against local rival FIU. On Saturday, September 20, UM traveled to the Ocean Bank Convocation Center to face the 6-6 panthers.
In the opening set, Miami fell into an early deficit. However, junior Ava Carney and senior Dalia Wilson combined for 16 kills to spark a comeback, giving the Hurricanes a 25-19 win.
The second set was far more competitive, featuring 12 ties and extended rallies. Miami’s front line proved the difference maker late, pulling ahead to close it out 29-27 in thrilling fashion.
The final set of the matchup followed a different script, as the Hurricanes quickly re-established control. Graduate student Lilou Stegeman and freshman Jazmin Vergara dominated at the net, contributing a string of blocks that sealed the match, 25-17, totaling 3-0 for Miami.
Additionally, other notable performances include Senior Flormarie Heredia Colón pacing the Hurricanes with 17 kills, graduate student Lilou Stegeman adding seven blocks, and redshirt sophomore Ariana Rodriguez delivering five aces.
With their best start in more than a decade, the ‘Canes aim to keep the momentum going as they open conference play on Sept. 26 with an away game at Georgia Tech (5‑4). The ACC race is tightening, with undefeated Clemson (12-0), No. 2 Boston College (11-1), and Miami all competing for the top spot.
LAKE COUNTY, Fla. (WSVN) — A Central Florida homeowner said he opened fire after a bear barged into his home and wreaked havoc.
Friday’s chaotic chain of events went down inside Zeke Clark’s home, off Ponderosa Avenue in Lake County.
The startled homeowner said this encounter that was way too close for comfort is just not what normally happens in his quiet, rural community near Orlando.
“Pure fear for me. I mean, seeing an animal that big come at you and being face to face with it, it’s not something you want to deal with,” he said.
Nevertheless, this wasn’t the first time Clark has encountered a bear on his property. Back in January, one got into his home, but the homeowner spotted it and let it out.
Two months ago, another one ate its way out of the garage.
Friday’s bear was not so lucky.
The animal sneaked in through the garage door, but the automatic hinges closed behind it, trapping the bear inside.
“Then he came to this door, it bent this door off the hatch, got this door open,” said Clark.
And from there, the bear barged straight into the house.
Clark’s mother-in-law, who was sitting in the living room, screamed, and Clark’s dogs started barking.
The bear bolted.
“Bear was right here, went running down the hallway,” said Clark
The only open door led to the bathroom. The bear ran in and, Clark said, he shut the door behind the four-legged intruder.
Before it got to his family, he fired.
“I was able to get the door back open again, shot one time inside the bathroom, shut the door again because the bear trying to get back out, and then finished by shooting two more times,” said Clark.
Clark pulled the bear onto a tarp and dragged it out. Trappers with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission handled the rest.
Now Clark is looking to upgrade his doorknobs. He is also counting his blessings.
“This could’ve been a much worse situation. I’m thankful for that,” he said.
Fortunately, no one else inside home was hurt.

The Taliban government on Sunday rejected U.S. President Trump’s bid to retake Bagram Air Base, four years after America’s chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan left the sprawling military facility in the Taliban’s hands.
Mr. Trump on Saturday renewed his call to reestablish a U.S. presence at Bagram, even saying “we’re talking now to Afghanistan” about the matter. He did not offer further details about the purported conversations. Asked by a reporter if he’d consider deploying U.S. troops to take the base, the president demurred.
“We won’t talk about that,” Mr. Trump said. “We want it back, and we want it back right away. If they don’t do it, you’re going to find out what I’m going to do.”
Mr. Trump followed up with a social media post saying “If Afghanistan doesn’t give Bagram Airbase back to those that built it, the United States of America, BAD THINGS ARE GOING TO HAPPEN!!!”
On Sunday, chief Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid rejected Mr. Trump’s assertions and urged the U.S. to adopt a policy of “realism and rationality.”
Afghanistan had an economy-oriented foreign policy and sought constructive relations with all states on the basis of mutual and shared interests, Mujahid posted on X.
It had been consistently communicated to the U.S. in all bilateral negotiations that Afghanistan’s independence and territorial integrity were of the utmost importance, he said.
“It should be recalled that, under the Doha Agreement, the United States pledged that ‘it will not use or threaten force against the territorial integrity or political independence of Afghanistan, nor interfere in its internal affairs,’” he said. The U.S. needed to remain faithful to its commitments, he added.
Mujahid did not reply to questions from The Associated Press about conversations with the Trump administration regarding Bagram and why Mr. Trump believed the U.S. could retake it.
‘Ceding Afghan soil is out of the question’
Earlier Sunday, the chief of staff at the Defense Ministry, Fasihuddin Fitrat, addressed Mr. Trump’s comments. “Ceding even an inch of our soil to anyone is out of the question and impossible,” he said during a speech broadcast by Afghan media.
In August last year, the Taliban celebrated the third anniversary of their takeover at Bagram with a grand military display of abandoned U.S. hardware, catching the eye of the White House. Mr. Trump has repeatedly criticized his predecessor, Joe Biden, for his “gross incompetence” during the withdrawal of U.S. forces after the country’s longest war.
Mr. Trump last week, during his state visit to the United Kingdom, hinted that the Taliban, who have struggled with an economic crisis, international legitimacy, internal rifts and rival militant groups since their return to power in 2021, could be game to allow the U.S. military to return.
“We’re trying to get it back because they need things from us,” Mr. Trump said of the Taliban. While the U.S. and the Taliban have no formal diplomatic ties, the sides have had hostage conversations. An American man who was abducted more than two years ago while traveling through Afghanistan as a tourist was released by the Taliban in March.
The Taliban also said they reached an agreement with U.S. envoys on an exchange of prisoners as part of an effort to normalize relations between the United States and Afghanistan.
They gave no details of the detainee swap, and the White House did not comment on the meeting in Kabul or the results described in a Taliban statement. The Taliban released photographs from their talks, showing their foreign minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, with Mr. Trump’s special envoy for hostage response, Adam Boehler.

It wasn’t pretty, but the No. 4 ranked Hurricanes took down the Gators in a gritty victory that was won in the trenches.
This marks UM’s second win against Florida in the last two seasons as the ’Canes now look towards the bye week with some things to clean up.
Miami’s pass rush looks better than ever
Reuben Bain Jr. and Akheem Mesidor only finished a half sack each, but they consistently put pressure on UF quarterback DJ Lagway throughout the entire game, making him feel uncomfortable both inside and outside the pocket.
In addition to Bain and Mesidor’s contributions, Miami’s pass rush against the Florida offensive line was aided by some unlikely sources.
Safety Jakobe Thomas hit gold on a safety blitz in the first half while sophomore Marquise Lightfoot and senior Mohammed Toure chipped in with a sack each as well.
With a dominant front four that can generate pressure against any offensive line in college, it isn’t necessary that Miami needs to blitz to get home to the quarterback.
Bain and Mesidor by themselves are typically enough to generate pressure against any college football offensive line.
“It’s easy to get a good pass rush when you have two of the best pass rushers in the country,” said Toure postgame.
That being said, if head coach Mario Cristobal can continue to diversify Miami’s pass rush with a combination of different blitz schemes, then they may be able to take their already incredible defense to new heights.

Miami’s passing game takes a major step back against a staunch Gators defense
While Carson Beck and the Hurricane offense didn’t have to do much against a struggling Gators football team, their lack of effectiveness in the passing game was certainly concerning.
They impressed in their first three weeks of this season with explosive chunk plays downfield and terrific efficiency, but much of Miami’s magic seemed to disappear against the Gators.
Beck has been fantastic to start his journey as a Hurricane, but his performance against the Gators was marred by inaccuracy and poor decision making. Miami’s star quarterback finished with just 160 yards and an interception on 17-30 passing, a far cry from his performance in Week three where he finished with over 300 yards and three touchdowns.
The blame for UM’s passing game struggles can’t all be placed on Beck, however.
Even though Miami’s receiving core is remarkably talented and deep, they didn’t generate nearly enough separation against the UF secondary, especially in the third quarter where Beck threw for just 12 yards.
To be fair, the Gators defense has looked outstanding against the pass to begin the 2025 season. Following a solid performance against USF quarterback Byrum Brown in Week 2, Florida conceded just 220 yards to LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier while picking him off once as well.
Going into the bye week and preparing for a road matchup against FSU, Miami head coach Mario Cristobal and offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson will hope that the Hurricanes offense rediscovers its potent air attack. It will be needed to match up with the high-powered Seminole offense.
Mark Fletcher Jr. and CharMar Brown are Miami’s Batman and Robin
On a day where the Hurricane passing game was largely ineffective, Miami’s dynamic running back duo propelled the Miami offense up and down the field, racking up nearly 200 yards on the ground. Overreliance on throwing the football may have been an issue for the 2024 Miami Hurricanes, but it isn’t for this team.
Fletcher continued his outstanding form against the Gators, rushing for over 100 yards for a second consecutive game while finding the endzone as well. The junior year back has been an absolute workhouse for the Hurricanes, carrying defenders on his back while churning for extra yards.
Brown can sometimes be overshadowed as Miami’s backup behind Fletcher, but he was arguably the star of Miami’s rushing attack against the Gators.
Brown not only finished with 80 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, but also led the team in receiving with 53 yards on four catches.
He even broke off a spectacular long touchdown run late in the second quarter where he broke through a pile of Gators defenders, but it was called back due to forward progress — a call Cristobal deemed a mistake by the referees.
While running duos are typically composed of one physical and one quick back, both Fletcher and Brown bring an element of tough running to the Hurricanes offense. Both are fast but aren’t known for their agility, instead bruising through defenders to break off big runs.
As the season continues on, the one-two punch that Fletcher and Brown provide for this Hurricanes offense will allow them to dominate time of possession and simply run teams out of the building.

Under rainy skies at Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday night, No. 4 Miami took on Florida for a battle of the Sunshine State. In a defensive clash, the Hurricanes scored 13 points in the fourth quarter, ousting the Gators 26-7.
Up 13-7, midway through the fourth quarter, Miami had the ball at its 20-yard line, looking for one final drive to put the Gators away. After an offensive struggle in the second and third quarters, the ’Canes relied on their physicality in the trenches.
The seven-minute drive spanned 13 plays, much in part to Miami’s running game featuring Mark Fletcher Jr. and CharMar “Marty” Brown. Brown came up huge with 22 receiving yards and 15 rushing yards, which was capped off with a leaping two-yard touchdown run to give the Hurricanes a 19-7 lead with less than four minutes remaining.
Brown was phenomenal all night for the ’Canes, finishing the game with 18 carries for 80 yards and two touchdowns. The North Dakota State transfer was also the leading receiver in the pass game with 53 yards on four receptions.
“The way we show up every day and compete with each other in the running back room is brotherhood,” Brown said.
Fletcher Jr. went back-to-back games with over 100 yards rushing, ending the game with 116 yards on the ground. The junior running back also scored a one-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 25-7 and put an exclamation point on the victory.
Coming into Saturday night’s matchup, Florida had only given up two touchdowns. Miami more than doubled that by scoring three, all on the ground.

The Hurricanes made their money in the fourth quarter, going for a methodical put-away touchdown drive and then forcing a turnover on downs. With less than three minutes to go, Florida receiver Eugene Wilson III dropped a pass on 4th and 12, effectively ending the game.
UM’s offense struggled mightily in the third quarter, opening the door for UF to come back into the game down 13.
After holding the Gators to four rushing yards in the first half, Florida running backs Jadan Baugh and Ja’Kobi Jackson cut up the Miami defense in its first drive of the second half. Baugh, the sophomore, scored UF’s only touchdown of the game on an 11-yard run.
The third-quarter struggles continued for Miami after Carson Beck threw an interception on the first play of the ensuing drive into the hands of Cormani McClain, a former Miami commit.
It was an uncharacteristic performance from Beck, who was held to 160 yards against a poised Florida defense.
“I have the utmost respect for them [Florida], and that defense is really good,” said Beck.
Despite some trouble, Miami’s pass defense was outstanding. Gators signal-caller DJ Lagway had issues throwing the ball all night. The sophomore quarterback only amassed 61 passing yards and completed 12-of-23 attempts.
Florida was 0-for-13 on third downs, and Lagway was sacked four times.
Coming into the game, the Miami defensive line had a 92.0 PFF grade, which is ranked second in the country. Additionally, UM holds the fourth-best pass rush grade with 89.8.
Graduate linebacker Mohamed Toure impressed for the second straight week, eclipsing ten total tackles, five solo, and a sack.

Sophomore tight end Elija Lofton was second in receiving yards with 43 yards. Throughout the first three games, it’s been seen that Beck has not targeted his tight ends as much, but Lofton paid dividends tonight.
Following Saturday’s win, the ’Canes have won nine of their last 11 matchups against the Gators. The last time UF won in Miami was 1985. However, the two programs have yet to schedule any future matchups against each other. Miami head coach Mario Cristobal believes this rivalry game should be an annual spectacle.
“We don’t get to play these guys again,” Cristobal said. “This game should be on the schedule every year; it’s a shame that it’s not.”
The last time the Gators beat the ’Canes in Miami was 1985
Miami has a bye week upcoming, but Cristobal preached that there are still ways to go.
“We’re focused on doing our job and doing right and playing for each other and for the University of Miami. We’ve come miles, but we have miles and miles to go,” Cristobal said.
The bye week will provide opportunities for players to recover, yet still go out and work day in and day out to get ready to face Florida State in Tallahassee on Oct. 4.
MIAMI GARDENS, FLA. (WSVN) – Miami Hurricanes fans were feasting this weekend, in and out of Hard Rock Stadium.
An eventful Saturday that began with long lines at the University of Miami campus in Coral Gables ended with yet another victory by the school’s football team, this time over their longtime rivals, the University of Florida Gators.
But ‘Canes fans who attended the game didn’t wait until it ended. Those who spoke with 7News were certain their team would emerge triumphant.
“We’re going all the way!” said a fan.
Another fan made a bold prediction. Or was it a wish?
“National Championship this year. Let’s go, Canes, baby. Let’s go, Canes! Woooo!” he said.
Orange, green and swagger packed the Rock on Saturday, as two of the state’s most historic college football programs battled off.
“Go Caaaaanes!” said an excited fan.
“The best in the city, baby, in the state!” said another excited fan.
More fearless predictions followed, as the outlook never looked good for the Gators.
“I’ve got the ‘Canes by about 1,000. Look at that,” said a fan.
“‘Canes by a million!” said another fan.
Some Gators fans thought they could survive outside the Swamp. Not quite.
But if Gators fans have their way, the ‘Canes might just encounter trouble later in the season.
“You see, right? It’s gonna be tougher for UM than they think,” said one disheartened but hopeful Gators fan.
The big game brought the eyes of the nation to the U well before kickoff, as ESPN’s “College GameDay” also returned to campus.
Miami welcomed the biggest traveling show in all of sports with some cafecito and some South Florida humidity.
Hours before the game, the Florida Panthers’ Matthew Tkachuk, “GameDay’s” celebrity picker, made his prediction.
“[The Gators] have no chance at all. It’s all ‘Canes, all day, baby!” he said as the crowd behind him erupted in cheers.
It seems like one real-life gator posted on Only in Dade knew it was time to get away. The caption accompanying the video read, “Looks like the Gators are trying to swim their way out of Miami already.”

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Lionel Messi had a first-half assist before scoring two goals in the second half to take over the league lead and propel Inter Miami to a 3-2 victory over D.C. United on Saturday night.
Messi scored the go-ahead goal in the 66th minute before adding some insurance in the 85th. He has 22 goals this season, one more than Nashville SC’s Sam Surridge in the race for the Golden Boot Award.
Defender Jordi Alba collected his 10th assist on Messi’s first goal and Sergio Busquets notched his seventh for the brace.
First-year midfielder Tadeo Allende scored his eighth goal — with an assist from Messi — in the 35th minute and Inter Miami took a 1-0 lead into halftime. It was Messi’s 12th assist this season — tied for fourth most in the league.
DC United pulled even in the 53rd minute when Christian Benteke took a pass from Brandon Servania and scored. It was the ninth goal for the 2024 Golden Boot winner and the 47th of his career. It was the third assist for Servania, matching his career high.
DC United got within 3-2 seven minutes into stoppage time on Jacob Murrell’s second goal this season. Benteke and Rida Zouhir both picked up their second assist.
Óscar Ustari finished with four saves for Inter Miami (15-6-7) in his 22nd start.
Luis Barraza saved four shots for DC United (5-16-10).
Inter Miami, fifth in the Eastern Conference, travels to play fourth-place New York City FC at Citi Field on Wednesday, trailing by one point with two matches in hand.
DC United will host the Philadelphia Union on Saturday.

The University of Miami’s women’s soccer team played their final non-conference fixture at Cobb Stadium on Thursday against Virginia Commonwealth University. The Hurricanes bested the Rams 2-0, taking home their sixth victory of the season.
Consecutive losses to Wake Forest and Duke instilled Miami (6-3-1, 0-2 ACC) with a sense of frustration coming into this gameweek. However, rather than this frustration developing into disillusionment, it materialized as forward-thinking motivation, causing the Hurricanes to triumph energetically.
The Hurricanes were continually on the front foot against VCU (2-5-2), especially finding joy in the wide-spaces. Miami gained the lead almost immediately, as a through ball to Brie Severns and a subsequent cutback to Ciara Alarcon saw the ball neatly placed into the bottom left corner. Following the goal, Miami went from strength-to-strength throughout the first half, rarely facing any sniff of danger from VCU’s offense.
Miami’s second goal arrived in a very similar fashion to the first, as a long ball from UM’s back line found Ciara Alarcon out on the right-flank, allowing her to square the ball across the box for Éabha O’Mahony to strike it home at the back post. The pattern between the goals demonstrates a growing efficacy of the players implementing head coach Ken Masuhr’s coaching.
“We scored two goals that came from the very foundations of our program,” Masuhr said, highlighting the squad’s growing on-pitch cohesion.

Such positivity surrounding the replication of in-practice possessional play has significant positive implications for this season. If Miami can continue to build on these ideas from practice, there is great scope for the team to surpass last season’s 15th-placed ACC finish.
Furthermore, Miami’s strong possessional display platformed the team accomplish another clean sheet, taking their tally to five this season. This shutout was aided by an 81st minute save by Lauren Rodriguez, who was consistently reliable in the few times she was tested this game.
Miami’s performance was excellent by all metrics, as they took this VCU team by the collar throughout the 90 minutes. However, the majority of the Hurricanes’ non-conference games have been marked by this dominance, which has not yet been replicated in ACC play. Therefore, while there are many positive signs to take from this midweek fixture, Miami still must strive to assert themselves in competitive play.
Miami face another challenging fixture against Louisville this Thursday, September 25th, at 7 p.m., as the Cardinals sit fourth in the ACC with a 2-1 conference record. Though this game marks another difficult date on the Hurricanes’ calendar, if Miami can find a way to take their non-conference momentum into this campaign, there is a real possibility that they take home their first points of the season.
Police said multiple people were shot Saturday night at Sky Meadow Country Club in Nashua, New Hampshire, and a suspect remains at large.
It happened around 8 p.m. on Mountain Laurels Drive.
The Nashua Police Department said two armed suspects fled after the shooting. One person was detained and the second remains at large, police said.
According to WBZ-TV I-Team sources, at least one person has critical injuries.
The Nashua Police Department said the Sheraton Hotel at 11 Tara Blvd. is being used as a unification site. People are being asked not to respond to the area of Sky Meadow at this time.
I-Team sources said New Hampshire State Police have requested a Massachusetts State Police presence at the border of the two states. Sky Meadow Country Club is located about five minutes over the Massachusetts border.
The Dunstable, Massachusetts Fire Department said a shelter in place order has been issued for people in the area of Thorndike Street, High Street, and Hardy Street until further notice. They said the order was issued out of an abundance of caution.
“Please remain indoors, lock all doors and windows, do not allow anyone into your home unless you know them personally, stay off the roads in the affected area to allow emergency responders access, and monitor official town communication channels for updates,” the Dunstable Fire Department said.
American Medical Response ambulance company confirmed they are transporting patients to area hospitals, but could not confirm how many.

A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie will headline the University of Miami’s 2025 Homecoming concert. The concert will take place on Nov. 4, at the Watsco Center on the UMiami campus.
The chart-topping Bronx rapper is known for hits like “Drowning”, “Look Back at It,” and “Still Think About You”. With platinum albums “The Bigger Artist,” “Hoodie SZN,” “Me vs. Myself” and a recent feature on the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse soundtrack, A Boogie has cemented his place as one of hip-hop’s most dynamic voices.
But for Miami, he’s more than just a headliner, he’s a regular. A BoogieWit Da Hoodie has long had a soft spot for the 305, frequently performing at local clubs like LIV, Story and E11EVEN, often popping up for surprise sets and late-night appearances.
As the news lit up the jumbo screens at Hard Rock Stadium, the crowd erupted in a wave of ecstatic roars and screams. Students jumped to their feet, towels whipping through the air and excitement rippled through the stands.
With SMU rolling into town that same week, the spotlight will be split between the game and the stage, but if tonight’s eruption of cheers is any clue, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie might just steal the show.

President Donald Trump issued an ultimatum to the Nicolás Maduro regime on Saturday, demanding that it immediately accept the return of criminals and mentally ill individuals who he said were released from Venezuelan prisons and asylums and sent to the United States.
An armed man was arrested Friday afternoon outside of a stadium in Arizona, where a memorial service for conservative activist Charlie Kirk – who was shot and killed as he spoke at an event at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10. – is scheduled to take place, law enforcement officials said.
The U.S. Secret Service (USSS) told CBS News in a statement that a man was “observed exhibiting suspicious behavior” at the NFL-sized State Farm Stadium in Glendale. Secret Service agents approached the man, who told agents that he was a member of law enforcement and was armed.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety said the man, identified as Joshua Runkles, was not a member of law enforcement. Runkles, 42, was booked into the Maricopa County Jail for impersonating a law enforcement officer and carrying a weapon into a prohibited place, officials said. Runkles has since been released on bond, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
“The U.S. Secret Service and local law enforcement are investigating the circumstances as to why he was at the location,” the USSS statement said.
President Trump and Vice President JD Vance, along with several administration officials, are scheduled to speak on Sunday at the memorial for the 31-year-old co-founder of Turning Point USA. His widow, Erika Kirk, who was named Turning Point USA’s new CEO, is also scheduled to speak. Several Christian musicians are also expected to perform with additional names to be announced, according to the program.
A senior Department of Homeland Security official said the memorial service has been designated as a Special Event Assessment Rating (SEAR) Level 1 event. That designation is used for “significant events with national and//or international importance that require extensive federal interagency support,” like the Super Bowl.
