Curved geometric forms define the interior architecture, with futuristic accents of stainless steel finishes and quarry tile flooring, yet balanced by deep green seating and warm, natural timbers for cosy ambience.

Designed for local residents, workers and visitors to Battersea Power Station, the House features an array of dine-in experiences for every coffee drinking occasion. Visitors can choose from elevated counter seating at the specialty demonstration bar or large, sculpture-like communal tables sitting central at the heart of the House. As visitors move through the House, a modern fibreglass partition gives way to a smaller zone, revealing angular banquettes and private booths, ideal for casual meetups, long brunches and working coffee meetings.

    The National Center for Civil and Human Rights has reopened following a $57.9 million expansion that fulfills the vision of its founders and strengthens its role as a national destination for education, reflection, and action.

    Leaders and supporters gathered on Nov. 4 for a ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring Arthur M. Blank, former Mayor Shirley Clarke Franklin, Mayor Andre Dickens, Board Chair Egbert Perry, Co-Chair AJ Robinson, CEO Jill Savitt, and Juneau Construction CEO Nancy Juneau.

    The reopening marks a defining moment for the Center, expanding its footprint by 24,000 square feet – to 65,000 square feet – and transforming how visitors experience the ongoing story of courage and human rights in America and around the world. Two new wings, six new galleries, three classrooms, and interactive experiences.

    The expansion also doubles the Center’s event-space capacity, with areas for classrooms, community gatherings, conferences, performances, and celebrations. The Franklin Pavilion’s roof terrace offers skyline views – a symbolic reminder of the city’s place at the heart of the civil rights movement.

    Rolls Down Like Water: The American Civil Rights Movement – The Center’s signature gallery returns with new storytelling and updates that enhance one of the most powerful visitor experiences: the Lunch Counter simulation, where guests take a seat at the counter and experience the courage of protestors who faced hatred with calm resolve.

    A Committed Life: The Morehouse College Martin Luther King, Jr. Collection – This reimagined gallery features a rotating selection of Dr. King’s personal papers and writings. Visitors encounter Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as never before – as a man, a father, a pastor, and a leader whose humanity deepened his moral vision. In a new tradition, the Center will feature a guest curator for each rotation. The inaugural guest curator is Rev. Dr. Bernice A. King, the youngest child of Dr. King and Coretta Scott King.

    Everyone. Everywhere. The Global Human Rights Movement – Highlights defenders and activists around the world and includes A Mile in My Shoes, an immersive installation where guests walk in others’ stories, encouraging empathy and connection.

    Special Exhibitions Gallery – For the first time, the Center will have a gallery for temporary exhibitions, beginning with Reclaiming History: Selections from the Tinwood Foundation, featuring Southern Black artists whose work confronts injustice and celebrates resilience.

    Broken Promises: The Legacy of the Reconstruction Era – Opening on Dec. 5, this gallery explores a chapter of U.S. history that provides critical context for the Civil Rights Movement. This gallery includes artifacts from the Without Sanctuary collection and a memorial space featuring the marker for Mary Turner’s lynching with an interpretation by artist Lonnie Holley.

    The reopening comes amid a national conversation about how history is told in museums. The National Center for Civil and Human Rights remains privately funded and steadfast in its mission to share a more complete and accurate story of civil rights history, human rights challenges today

    On Nov. 8, the Center will host a Community Celebration inviting visitors of all ages to experience the new museum.     City Lodge Hotels has published its 2025 Integrated Report (IAR), the report offers a comprehensive view of the group’s structure and leaders, how it delivers on its strategy, capital performance, and governance, plus how it continues to deliver on its slogan of: Life is hard. Check into easy.

    In her Chief Financial Officer’s Review, Dhanisha Nathoo reflects on the year under review: “The embedding of the dynamic pricing strategy (room rates up 7%) and the enhanced food and beverage offer (food and beverage revenue up 8%), have offset the softening of occupancy demand which decreased to 56% compared to 2024. Group revenue increased by 3% to R2.0 billion.

    Focused discipline on cost containment held operating cost increases at 4% for the year. These operational efficiencies have helped to deliver stable profits for the year of R213 million (up 13%) and adjusted HEPS growth of 9%.”

    The following excerpt is from the question-and-answer section with Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Widegger, in which he discusses highlights of the past financial year and all the group has achieved as it celebrates its 40th anniversary, plus the next phase, which will be about growth, innovation, and continuing to deliver hospitality with heart.

    Q: What were the key strategic shifts or successes that defined 2025?

    A: This year, we made a deliberate transition from recovery to growth. That meant shifting from a defensive posture, appropriate for the early post-Covid period, to a forward-looking strategy focused on revenue growth, innovation and guest experience.

    This shift is already evident across the portfolio. To date, 30% of our rooms have been newly constructed or refurbished. These upgrades go beyond aesthetics to modernise our offering, enhance sustainability, and ensure each brand remains relevant and competitive.

    Innovation remains central. We launched a new website aligned with our check into easy brand promise, piloted the Buzz app for pre-order dining, and began replacing our legacy property management system.

    The groundwork for our enterprise resource planning platform is also underway and will digitise, connect and future-proof our core operations.

    A: Celebrating 40 years of welcoming guests was a proud and deeply personal moment – I’ve been part of this journey for 32 years. Watching and being a part of growing the company from a small portfolio into a multi-brand group with national and international reach has been remarkable. We’ve weathered multiple economic cycles, adapted to disruption, and emerged from Covid as a more agile, future-ready business.

    Personally, what I’m most proud of are the stories of individuals who joined us decades ago in entry-level roles and now lead hotels or sit at the leadership table. That kind of continuity speaks volumes about who we are. It’s a living testament to our identity as a people-focused business. And that matters deeply, because it’s our people who have always been, and will continue to be, the key to our success. Their resilience, care, and professionalism have carried us through expansion, crisis, recovery, and now, growth.

    Q: How would you summarise the past year’s challenges and how has the business responded?

    A: The 2025 financial year was shaped by uncertainty. While there were encouraging signals, including signs of cautious optimism following the formation of a Government of National Unity and easing interest rates, overall trading conditions remained inconsistent.

    Business travel was hesitant, the consumer remained under pressure, and global geopolitical instability weighed on sentiment. Our approach to portfolio optimisation remains disciplined. City Lodge Hotel Katherine Street permanently closed its doors in December 2024 after 35 years of operations, with demand consolidated into our three other Sandton properties. The hotel was sold for R68 million, and a portion of the proceeds was allocated to share buy-backs.

    Looking ahead, we continue to assess our current portfolio, explore new build opportunities, consider property extensions, and evaluate acquisitions that align with our purpose and growth ambitions. Every decision – whether to invest, reposition, or release – is guided by guest demand, market context, and a long-term perspective.

    We are proud of our history, strengthened by the challenges we have overcome, and intentional in how we move forward. This next phase is not just about growth; it’s about growing with purpose, clarity, and confidence in the future we’re building.

  • FAA reducing air traffic by 10% across 40 ‘high-volume’ markets during government shutdown

    WASHINGTON (AP) — The Federal Aviation Administration said Wednesday that it was taking the extraordinary step of reducing air traffic by 10% across 40 “high-volume” markets beginning Friday morning to maintain travel safety as air traffic controllers exhibit signs of strain during the ongoing government shutdown.

    The cutback stands to impact thousands of flights nationwide because the FAA directs more than 44,000 flights daily, including commercial passenger flights, cargo planes and private aircraft. The agency didn’t immediately identify which airports or cities will be affected but said the restrictions would remain in place as long as necessary.

    “I’m not aware in my 35-year history in the aviation market where we’ve had a situation where we’re taking these kinds of measures,” FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said at a news conference.

    Air traffic controllers have been working unpaid since the shutdown began Oct. 1, and most have been on duty six days a week while putting in mandatory overtime. With some calling out of work due to frustration, taking second jobs or not having money for child care or gas, staffing shortages during some shifts have led to flight delays at a number of U.S. airports.

    Bedford, citing increased staffing pressures and voluntary safety reports from pilots indicating growing fatigue among air traffic controllers, said he and U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy did not want to wait until the situation reached a crisis point.

    “We’re not going to wait for a safety problem to truly manifest itself when the early indicators are telling us we can take action today to prevent things from deteriorating,” Bedford said. “The system is extremely safe today and will be extremely safe tomorrow. If the pressures continue to build even after we take these measures, we’ll come back and take additional measures.”

    He and Duffy said they would meet with airline executives later Wednesday to determine how to implement the reduction in flights before a list of the affected airports would be released sometime Thursday.

    Airlines and passengers wait for information

    United, Southwest and American all said they will try to minimize the impact on consumers as they cut their schedules to comply with the order.

    Calls to the customer service hotlines at United and American were answered within a few minutes Wednesday afternoon, suggesting anxious passengers were not swamping the airlines with questions about the status of their upcoming flights.

    In a letter to employees, United CEO Scott Kirby promised to focus the cuts on regional routes and flights that don’t travel between hubs. He said the airline will try to reschedule customers when possible and will also offer refunds to anyone who doesn’t want to fly during this time, even if their flight isn’t canceled.

    “United’s long-haul international flying and our hub-to-hub flying will not be impacted by this schedule reduction direction from the FAA,” Kirby said. “That’s important to maintain the integrity of our network, give impacted customers as many options as possible to resume their trip, and sustain our crew pairing systems.”

    Airline industry analyst Henry Harteveldt, who is president of Atmosphere Research Group, said he thinks the government may have bungled this announcement by not meeting with airlines first and giving them more time to adjust schedules made months in advance.

    “To tell airlines you’ve got 48 hours to rebuild your schedules at 90% of what you’ve got isn’t much time, and it’s going to result in a lot of chaos,” said Harteveldt, who was waiting to hear if his own flight from San Francisco to Dallas on Saturday would be canceled. He added that the Trump administration may be using aviation safety “to force the two sides in Washington back to the negotiating table to resolve the shutdown.”

    AAA spokesperson Aixa Diaz advised travelers to watch for flight updates on the airline’s app and airport social media accounts. She also recommended allowing plenty of time at the airport before a scheduled flight.

    “It’s frustrating for travelers, because there’s not much you can do. At the end of the day, you either fly or you don’t,” she said.

    The cuts could represent as many as 1,800 flights and upward of 268,000 seats combined, according to an estimate by aviation analytics firm Cirium. For example, O’Hare International Airport in Chicago could see 121 of its 1,212 flights currently scheduled for Friday cut if the FAA distributes the reductions equally among impacted airports, Cirium said.

    Data shows worsening weekend staffing

    The FAA regularly slows down or stops flights from taking off toward an airport for a number of reasons, including weather conditions, equipment failures and technical problems. Staffing shortages also may lead to slowed or halted departures if there aren’t enough controllers and another facility can’t absorb some of the work load.

    Last weekend saw some of the worst staffing shortages of the shutdown, which became the longest on record early Wednesday.

    From Friday to Sunday evening, at least 39 different air traffic control facilities announced there was some potential for limited staffing, according to an Associated Press analysis of operations plans sent through the Air Traffic Control System Command Center system. The figure, which is likely an undercount, is well above the average for weekends before the shutdown

    During weekend periods from Jan. 1 to Sept. 30, the average number of airport towers, regional centers overseeing multiple airports and facilities monitoring traffic at higher altitudes that announced the potential for staffing issues was 8.3, according to the AP analysis. But during the five weekend periods since the shutdown began on Oct. 1, the average more than tripled to 26.2 facilities.

    Travel industry joins unions in urging shutdown’s end

    Major airlines, aviation unions and the wider travel industry have urged Congress to end the shutdown.

    Wednesday’s announcement came on the heels of Duffy warning a day earlier that there could be chaos in the skies next week if the shutdown drags on long enough for air traffic controllers to miss their second full paychecks next Tuesday.

    Duffy said the FAA wanted to take a proactive approach instead of reacting after a disaster. He pointed to all the questions that arose after the deadly midair collision in January between a commercial jet and a military helicopter near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport about why FAA didn’t recognize the risks and act sooner.

    “We learned from that. And so now we look at data, and before it would become an issue, we try to assess the pressure and try to make moves before there could be adverse consequences,” Duffy said. “And that’s what’s happening here today.”

    How to Get to Lake Bogoria

    There are two ways to get to Lake Bogoria.

    By Road

    Lake Bogoria is situated approximately 250 kilometers north of Nairobi, and the most common way to get there is by road. The drive typically takes 5 to 6 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. From Nairobi, you can take the A104 highway through Nakuru, then turn off at Eldama Ravine or Mogotio towards Marigat, the nearest town to Lake Bogoria National Reserve.

    If you’re using a private vehicle, a 4×4 is highly recommended, especially during the rainy season when the roads leading to the lake can become rough and muddy. You’ll also want to fuel up and carry enough water and snacks, as amenities can be limited along the way.

    Nearby Airports

    If you prefer flying, the nearest airport is Eldoret International Airport. From the airport, you would need to continue by road to Lake Bogoria, which could take 2 to 3 hours depending on the route. However, the drive to the lake is scenic and worth the time.
