    Heather’s Choice and SteamDot Coffee Roasters are thrilled to announce their collaborative efforts occurring in Anchorage, Alaska. These two companies are now sharing space and product in what has become a mutually beneficial relationship. Jonathan White of SteamDot became Heather’s first business mentor back in 2014 as Heather’s Choice was just getting started. Jonathan was kind enough to allow Heather to rent commercial kitchen space at SteamDot Coffee Roasters in the evenings to manufacture the first Heather’s Choice dehydrated backpacking meals and snacks. “He was so incredibly supportive of me,” Heather recalled. “He would recommend business books for me to read and help me figure out everything involved with permitting.”

    As SteamDot Coffee Roasters continued to expand, Jonathan purchased the old rock gym building off of Fairbanks Street in midtown Anchorage. This iconic new facility houses their roasting equipment, coffee cupping events, and more. The move into the old rock gym for SteamDot also coincided with a need at Heather’s Choice for additional commercial warehouse space. The two businesses decided to collaborate again and Heather’s Choice is now renting 500 square feet from SteamDot Coffee Roasters for Packaroon production and to house inventory.

    As of 2017, SteamDot Coffee can now be enjoyed in two Heather’s Choice products; the Black Espresso Packaroons and the Cherry Cocoa Nib Breakfast. This collaboration is part of a continued effort at Heather’s Choice to use local, high-quality ingredients. SteamDot Coffee Roasters is also offering retail distribution of Heather’s Choice Packaroons at three of their cafe locations.

    The private space transportation company Zero 2 Infinity, has released today new images of the final design of the Bloon pod, as well as a video that shows the complete flight cycle of the Near Space experience.

    During the past year, Zero 2 Infinity has worked closely with the Barcelona based Elisava School of Design and Engineering on the interior design of the pod. The result consists of an open modular composition and introduces the usage of innovative materials and aesthetics which are customizable for the ultimate experience of the passengers. With over 50 years of legacy, constant innovation and academic excellence, Elisava’s approach has been integral to the development of this project.

    Features like ergonomic shapes, lighting, next generation materials and audiovisual elements for interaction have been key in order to design the first Space Tourism pod ever created in Europe.

    Bloon is configured for a total of six passengers, including two pilots, with individual spaces for each Near Space traveller. The patented pod design by Zero 2 Infinity features large panoramic windows that will allow for an unforgettable exploration. Bloon is a sustainable solution to Space transportation that has no negative impact on the environment. The pod is reusable and, since the balloon uses helium, it ensures a safe mission with no emissions.

    During the design presentation, Zero 2 Infinity announced a collaboration agreement with Ecoalf, who will join Elisava in the coming months to design the apparel for the pilots, the passengers and the operations team of the company.

    Ecoalf is a sustainable fashion brand who pioneered the use of recycled materials on a global scale. The company has developed over 160 fabrics, with sustainability and innovation being the main drivers. The challenge in the upcoming months is to include smart wearables into the design in order to integrate the experience with the passengers and the Near Space pod.

    The Space sector has become more open to private initiatives and is currently living a revolution. Many services are in development from global communication services to meteorological predictions, interconnection of machines through the Internet of Things, and even the possibility of having a daily picture of the entire planet. These advances have paved the way for the creation of hundreds of companies that need efficient and safe transportation services like the ones Zero 2 Infinity is offering and developing.

    Zero 2 Infinity, a private company headquartered in Barcelona, Spain, with subsidiaries around the world, is radically simplifying access to Space. Damien Henning, is an average Colorado outdoorsman and world traveler who wanted to share something useful with fellow adventurers.     The majority of highly successful Kickstarter campaigns are launched by established companies with pre-existing press contacts, substantial advertising/PR budgets, experienced teams that fashion campaign pages into professional-looking websites, thousands of dollars in pre-orders to boost “launch” donations, and a substantial established customer base.

    “There has never been a sunhat like the Shapeshifter before. Necessity was certainly the mother of this invention. Trekking at high elevations while needing to protect my skin from the sun, and having a hat that I could beat up, sweat in, get rained on, stuff in my backpack, throw into a washer to clean and not bend in the wind. It didn’t exist. So, I had to make one.”

    It’s hard for the Average Joe to compete with that. However, in the case of the Shapeshifter Sunhat, a Nobody coming from Nowhere (unemployed, living in Mom and Dad’s basement, driving the same car since 1995) began with nothing but an idea and determination, and has utilized crowdfunding to its keenest potential.

    Noticing a Need

    Through his love of the outdoors and adventure travel, Damien noticed that (with outdoor recreation growing in popularity all over the world), the threat of significant sun damage to our skin is as real as ever. However, the magnitude of this threat is often overlooked by many outdoor-loving consumers. No significant advancements have been made in recreational sun protection technology for years.

    Via his new one man company “Roamin Republic LLC,” Damien was pleased to announce the pending release and Kickstarter launch of the latest revolutionary product in personal sun protection. “The Shapeshifter Sunhat.”

    The Shapeshifter is a bendable, shape-able, crush-able, durable, super portable, machine washable, waterproof, extra wind resistant, wide-brimmed sunhat.

    Although sun hats already exist in the market, they are not fully adequate. Wide-brimmed hats that have softer brims lose their shape very quickly and blow into or out of the face in the wind. Also, using them for facial rain protection results in the soft brim buckling, and more often than not, warping the hat’s shape for good.

    Stiff, rigid sunhats (such as those utilized by many outdoor workers) are great in the wind, but are heavy and impossible to collapse for easy storage and transport.

    If the brim has a thin cable support, it’s similarly not compactable, and is still pretty useless in the wind.

    A Better Solution

    Damien searched for and finally discovered the best way to get a strong, bendable, shape-able, resilient and waterproof cable into the brim of a high-quality sunhat.

    He calls it “The Shapeshifter.”

    With the unique cable in place, the Shapeshifter can do what no other sunhat can:

    ⦁ The brim will not fold or flop in a head wind up to 65 mph.
    ⦁ The brim will not buckle under heavy rain, keeping drops from smacking the face.
    ⦁ The back can be bent up and fine tuned to give clearance while hiking with a backpack or while playing sports.
    ⦁ It can be folded to increase its compactness and portability, and can be put into small bags or larger pockets.

Relatively few outdoor items have had the success or exposure that the basement-begotten Shapeshifter Sunhat promises to have.

    Saint Lucia—an Eastern Caribbean island nation famous for its pair of dramatically tapered mountains, volcanic beaches, reef-diving sites, fishing villages, and an interior rainforest that leads to cliff-edge waterfalls—was the postcard-perfect scene for the convergence of several hundred of the world’s most dedicated Scientologists. They gathered for a week-long convocation aboard the legendary 440-foot Motor Vessel, Freewinds, a religious retreat for the Church of Scientology, in celebration of the 29th Anniversary of the ship’s Maiden Voyage.

    Indeed, this was no ordinary cruise, in fact, those on board form a stellar group who have collectively spearheaded the Church’s expansion through the creation of new Churches of Scientology in their respective zones.

    What’s more, the week-long gathering is helmed by the religion’s ecclesiastical leader, Mr. David Miscavige, so again, this is no ordinary cruise.

    The week launched with Mr. Miscavige’s recap of just some of the highlights from the year’s progress:

    “Since last we met, our solar system of Churches now includes: Budapest, HungaryHarlem, New YorkSan Diego, California; and, the rim of our terrestrial world in Auckland, New Zealand,” he said, before moving on to detail the most recent Church grand openings in the San Fernando Valley, CaliforniaMiami, Florida; and Copenhagen, Denmark.

    But the convocation is not just about looking back, Mr. Miscavige told the assembled. This is the week that sets the agenda for Scientologists around the world to continue the record-breaking expansion that has made the religion a thriving, upward-moving worldwide phenomenon.

    For the rest of the year, the Freewinds is an extraordinary vessel of benevolent distribution, as she logs and charts adventures that bring humanitarian and educational programs to the Caribbean and Latin America; as well as providing spiritual services for the most advanced Scientologists all year long.

    But for this week, the guests on the annual cruise will not only celebrate their own good works on behalf of the Church, but will target, plan and put into action future expansion while participating in extraordinary evening events, each with a unique and striking focus.

    HONORING A HUMANITARIAN SHIP OF STATE

    When Mr. Miscavige greeted the audience the first night, he also paid homage to the Freewinds, whose crew—including five master mariners and 133 survival craftsmen—has compiled a staggering 5,000 years of cumulative experience at sea. The ship, he said, has been virtually rebuilt since her Maiden Voyage, making her “the safest ship on seven seas.”

    But her safety is not her only hallmark, and not her particular calling card. It is in fact her ongoing mission for humanity as she plies the azure Caribbean waters.

    From human rights campaigns reaching island inhabitants across the windward isle of Saint Vincent; to drug education proliferation over Bonaire’s TV and radio airwaves to counteract endemic drug abuse; and morals education by way of The Way to Happiness, which earned exuberant praise from Aruba’s Ministry of Justice.

    In fact, the value of the Freewinds’ mission was repeatedly acknowledged in testaments from grateful island officials who have personally witnessed the benefits.

    The interaction of the Freewinds and her crew with society shows “not just merely extending a hand, or granting a favor, but a social responsibility,” said the Saint Lucia Minister over Infrastructure and Ports, in a video tribute. “That passion is one of love, one of sincerity, and one of true friendship and happiness.”

    A scholar from Barbados added, “The Freewinds doesn’t just come in, spend some time and leave. They look for areas where the Freewinds can help. And it’s not about helping financially. It’s about helping find solutions to issues, to concerns, to problems.”

    While finally, a Ministry of Tourism representative from St. Kitts and Nevis declared: “Even though we don’t say it often enough or loud enough, just remember, the Caribbean appreciates the Freewinds.”

    AN EVENING IN RECOGNITION OF FOUNDER L. RON HUBBARD

    The next night, guests were treated to a biographical presentation in honor of L. Ron Hubbard (LRH). It was an evening informing and astounding those in attendance with countless previously untold tales of Mr. Hubbard’s legacy. Tales presented by the LRH Biographer, Dan Sherman, that spoke to both Mr. Hubbard’s kindness and his vision.

    At the heart of the evening were on-camera interviews featuring vivid personal accounts of those who had encountered L. Ron Hubbard and were forever changed.

    There was the Spanish cabin steward who went on to become a “better person with my fellow man, and that’s all thanks to Ron.” Similarly, the Portuguese entrepreneur who spoke of “the power” from LRH “that made my life what I am today.” Followed by the Caribbean synagogue president who told of Mr. Hubbard “capturing the mood and atmosphere” of the New World’s oldest synagogue in their cherished photo journal. Concluding with the island radio personality and architect who recalled one Captain L. Ron Hubbard urging his Caribbean classmates to empower themselves through education and thus whom he called “a Captain not only for a ship, for me, he’s a Captain that helps us direct our lives.”

    Mr. Sherman concluded his presentation with a message, “Whatever you do, emulate L. Ron Hubbard. His competence and proficiency sufficient to produce an emotional impact—emulate it. And thereby sow his compassion and kindness through the lives you, too, encounter.”

    A NIGHT IN CELEBRATION OF HUMANITARIAN ACTION

    Passengers aboard for the Maiden Voyage also attended a formal event honoring the International Association of Scientologists (IAS) and its stellar commitment to not only protect and support the religion, but accelerate the betterment of mankind, through the myriad international humanitarian campaigns. They include:

    • The Citizens Commission on Human Rights who exposed and curbed psychiatric abuse in Tokyo hospitals, across South Africa’s largest tribal kingdom and on the streets of South Florida.
    • United for Human Rights and Youth for Human Rights, who sparked a human rights movement in Toronto—the most ethnically diverse city on Earth, in Africa’s most populous land of Nigeria and in Sri Lanka, where Hindus, Buddhists, Christians and Muslims worked together to spread the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
    • Drug-Free World, who carried out their crusades with The Truth About Drugs across Athenian neighborhoods, through Baja’s notorious drug transit route and up and down the playing fields of the European Football Championships.
    • And finally, through the social betterment work of IAS-supported programs where the Way to Happiness generated a moral resurgence through Cuban towns and villages, Study Technology ignited an education revolution in Mongolia and Narconon drug rehabilitation struck at the core of Nepal’s addiction culture.

    As announcements of accomplishments came to a close, a monumental one was unveiled. And it rode directly upon the wake of the Freewinds in tandem with IAS support, because working with volunteers, law enforcement and Scientologists, literally millions of copies of The Way to Happiness, The Truth About Drugs and The Story of Human Rights were distributed in major cities and jungle villages throughout Colombia.

    As a result, what was once the acknowledged drug capital of the world, and a country the United Nations classified as the “worst humanitarian crisis in the Western Hemisphere,” soon became the “Colombian Miracle” with military human rights violations dropping an incredible 96 percent.

    Directly on the heels of that was the grand opening of Colombia’s IAS-sponsored National Church of Scientology where they continued to work tirelessly to provide the solutions for restoring humanity. Soon to follow was the astounding peace accord between Colombia’s national government and FARC troops, after which 8,500 police were personally trained by Freewinds staff in vital life skills for use in reintegrating FARC troops back into society.

    But, even so, that’s not the end of the story. Because, less than a decade after the Freewinds first docked in Cartagena, Mr. Miscavige pronounced the next epic accomplishment: that on the 5th of May, 2017, the nation of Colombia awarded the Church of Scientology full religious recognition.

    It was yet another example that the combination of the Freewinds, Scientologists, global changemakers and the inspiration of L. Ron Hubbard’s technology for living, continue to lead to the betterment of humanity.

    So, as the passengers prepared to leave the ship, they and thousands more are bound and determined to resume their year-long work of uplifting society and improving humanitarian conditions worldwide, one nation, indeed one port at a time, for the next 51 weeks.

    Setting the goal of opening another 50 Churches, there’s still plenty of sailing ahead, as the Church seeks to reach all people in all lands. With a course guided by charts from the Belt of Orion to the Milky Way, they’re ocean bound to discover what’s ahead. And thus, Mr. Miscavige bid all passengers this finale message:

    “I thank you for attending…

    “I thank you for all you have thus far achieved…

    “And, all that I know you’ll achieve in this year to come…

    “Good luck and Godspeed!”

    “Be the Astronaut” is an innovative first-person experience for all ages that teaches science and engineering content via a fusion of physical exhibitry, state-of-the-art video game technology, simulators, and actual NASA reconnaissance data.

    Described as one of 12 must-see exhibits in the country by USA Today, the new exhibit came to Reno by way of Space Center Houston and is now available only at the San Diego Air and Space Museum and the National Automobile Museum, named one of America’s five greatest automobile museums.

    Other cities have only been able to reserve “Be the Astronaut” for a limited engagement, but thanks to the generosity of the William N. Pennington Foundation,  this new installation will be permanently based at the Nevada Space Center, located within the National Automobile Museum (The Harrah Collection).

    “We are absolutely thrilled to be the official home for this world-class project,” said Jackie Frady, president and executive director of the National Automobile Museum.

    Scientifically verified by experts at NASA for accuracy and feasibility, this new interactive experience teaches visitors about the concepts, challenges, and excitement of spaceflight through the use of touch-screen stations, artifacts, and interactive simulator pods built to look like space capsules.

    Visitors have the opportunity to command a crew of virtual content experts throughout each stage of the exhibit. These digital experts help visitors learn what’s needed to fly a spaceship, pilot a lander, and drive a surface rover — and they appear onscreen as visitors climb into the simulators to perform these feats, in an exciting narrative adventure that spans the solar system.

    Each space capsule contains a large flat-screen monitor which serves as the ship’s “windshield,” giving visitors a first-person view of their adventures. Touch screens and industrial-quality joysticks put visitors in command. During missions, the cockpit comes alive with visuals and sounds that help visitors imagine what it’s like to be an astronaut — training and carrying out their missions.

    Visitors receive a magnetic swipe ID card — their Astronaut ID/Rover Driver License— that they use to progress through each step of the exhibit’s missions.

    Also on display is the Mars rover “Opportunity” mockup from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, space suit replicas, artifacts from NASA, and space memorabilia from American pop culture. Included are objects connecting NASA with Star Trek, Star Wars and even Snoopy — as well as the NASA-engineered life support module designed to fly mice to the Moon on the final Apollo mission.

    Eureka Exhibits, the producer of the award-winning exhibition, has a Space Act Agreement with NASA and is working with the Nevada Space Center and the National Automobile Museum to develop additional experiences. Some of these are featured on Science Saturdays at the Museum, monthly science-based adventures for all ages.     So the team found a way to turn a device that nearly everybody has into “the smartest car accessory in the world.” HEED is the world’s first device of this type, and promises to become every driver’s must-have gadget.     Before arriving at the current design, HEED went through several changes and multiple versions because the team had to take into account the mechanical challenges in the car and convenience for everyday use, as well as the design of modern smartphones. With smartphone designs moving toward edge-to-edge displays, mechanical support such as clips and holders could have damaged or effected the phone’s display. For this reason, the team decided on the implementation of gel pads in conjunction with a sleek and strong design that can withstand sudden braking, acceleration, and rough driving conditions.  

    To use the dash cam feature, all a driver needs to do is affix HEED to their windshield or dashboard, then place their phone on the mount. HEED will capture everything, while simultaneously allowing the driver to use navigation and music apps without any hassles. Along with the dash cam and wireless charging, HEED also has other beneficial features, such as a “Priority List” that allows a driver to only receive calls from their preset priority list while driving, as well as a “Mute Alerts” feature that allows a user to mute alerts from other apps in order to limit distractions.

    Hard to fathom that the remote Verde Canyon has played host to so many over the years. For those traveling the route today, they feel very removed from the hustle and bustle of cities and commerce. The quietude of the canyon belies the crowd of visitors, as each train ride is a peaceful experience: the breeze and the birds interrupted only by occasional joyous laughter, a clickety-clack of the wheels on steel, a horn echoing off the red rock canyon walls as the engines announce their presence.

    From its early 20th Century days as the brawny muscle hauling product for the United Verde Copper Company from Jerome, to its rebirth as a premiere tourist attraction, this scenic train has carved a popular path through the Arizona wilderness. Its 1990 inception as Verde Canyon Railroad was the start of a new chapter in the life of the rails and the meandering riparian wilderness through which it passes. By 2005 the Governor of Arizona appointed Verde Canyon Railroad an “Arizona Treasure” and the passenger service commemorated its one millionth passenger.

    In 2012 Verde Canyon Railroad celebrated both the Arizona State Centennial and its 100th birthday. Over the decades, Verde Canyon Railroad has hosted visitors from all over the world and has been the site for many important events and family milestones. The train has grown from a small consist of a handful of cars to nearly a quarter-mile in length, featuring nine living room-style, first-class cars, one historically-restored coach, a private-charter luxury caboose and offered unlimited access to six open-air viewing cars. The depot has expanded to include a southwestern-style depot, a museum, outdoor dining area, gift shops, café and colorful storyboards detailing the canyon’s history and wild denizens. 

    Now, the next chapter of Verde Canyon Railroad’s success: the count reaches two million passengers.     Traveling between Palestine and Rusk, the Texas State Railroad may only cover a 25-mile-long track, but it runs deep: a deep connection of pride, scenery, friendship, and history linking the two communities. On Thursday, May 4, 2017, The Western Group, an association of railroads headquartered in Ogden, Utah, took over the operation of the Official Railroad of Texas. Awarded the operating contract by the Texas State Railroad Authority due to their vast knowledge and experience in passenger and rail service, The Western Group is proud to expand into the Lone Star State.

    “We don’t want to just be known as the new operator with new ideas,” commented Teresa Propeck, Vice President of Passenger Train Services, “but rather as the right operator with determination to give this railroad the exposure and recognition it deserves.”

    One of Western Group’s affiliates is Verde Canyon Railroad, a successful excursion operation in the Verde Valley of Arizona, operating on a historic line built in 1912. Since 1990, Verde Canyon Railroad has built an award-winning foundation in tourism with this heritage rail line, and many of their successful methods and concepts will be implemented on the Texas line, ensuring its longevity and superiority as one of the nation’s esteemed rail experiences. “The bones of a great railroad are here,” says Propeck, “Our goal is to make Texans excited about their Official State Railroad when they come to ride.”

    Dating back to 1884, inmates incarcerated in the East Texas Penitentiary in Rusk started to lay rails to transport fuel for the prison’s iron industry. By 1909, the railroad had reached its final destination of Palestine, 25 miles from where it began. Operating as a freight line until 1969, the railroad was turned over to the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife through legislative enactment. With its historic locomotives, vintage rail cars and handsome heritage depots, the Texas State Railroad was christened anew as a tourist train, first welcoming passengers aboard on the date of the United States Bicentennial, July 4, 1976. Designated the “Official Railroad of Texas” by decree of the 78th Texas Legislature in 2003, the line was transferred to the Texas State Railroad Authority by the 80th Texas Legislature in 2006.

    For the past 10 years, operators have focused heavily on special event trains. The goal of The Western Group is to build upon this foundation and bring even more passengers to ride through the picturesque Piney Woods. Some will come for the pure thrill and enjoyment of riding in antique rail cars, others to see the vintage steam and diesel engines, but all will be impressed by the railroad associates who pamper travelers from the first moment they arrive on property, through the unparalleled on-board service, to the last wave goodbye upon arrival back at the depot.

    Food service and shopping options will be available at both Rusk and Palestine depots, as well as fascinating storyboards detailing the railroad’s and the region’s rich history. Rail fans nationwide recognize the significance of the Texas State Railroad’s celebrated rolling stock.

    “The Texas State Railroad Authority has done an unbelievable job of making sure that these classic locomotives and passenger cars maintain historic authenticity,” commented Propeck, “and it is our goal to improve this railroad by adding more comforts and amenities expected by riders in the 21st century. We will still be operating trains for special occasions, including Polar Express, but we will be enhancing the experience for passengers each and every day.”

    The Western Group plans to have improvements well underway by the middle of May and completed by mid-June, with the exception of the new rolling stock museum located in Palestine. “This project may take a little more time,” said Propeck, “but the ability to stand right next to these mammoth steam locomotives and tour a late-1890 wooden-frame presidential car in mint condition will be worth the wait.”

    Original locomotive mechanical drawings will be incorporated into the exhibit with other museum-quality memorabilia. Included in the planned upgrades are coach car renovations, new interiors for cabooses and the makeover of unique parlor observation car #1511, which has seated Texas governors and U.S. presidents dating back to Lyndon Johnson.

    A beautiful campground located on Lake Cherokee near Rusk is included in the improvement of the railroad facilities. This feature is a rare bonus as it’s a very special opportunity to camp overnight next to a historic railroad in the beautiful Piney Woods. Everything great about Texas State Railroad’s storied past will remain treasured, while new ideas on the horizon will bring this heritage railroad more passengers and enthusiasm than in past years.

    The Western Group will also be working with the communities of Rusk and Palestine to aggressively market and develop rail freight opportunities along the line through its freight rail carrier, Texas & Eastern Railroad. “Texas & Eastern is uniquely positioned to help lower the cost of transportation for businesses in the area,” says Bruce Carswell, Senior Vice President of The Western Group. “The rail line already has available transload options and has developable rail-served property parcels available at multiple locations along the rail line.”
