    Springtime welcomes favorite annual highlights such as newborn baby eaglets, the ever-popular Easter Bunny Express and a festive celebration of Cinco De Mayo.  The Black-tailed Jackrabbit, a Verde Canyon resident, may be one of the largest hares in North America but he’s got nothing on Verde Canyon Railroad’s resident rabbit, the Easter Bunny. On Sunday, April 1st, depot guests enjoy hugs, candy and photo-ops with the mischievous hare.  The fun continues onboard as the winner of the jellybean counting contest is awarded a giant jar of candies to take along on the ride.     Accessible only by these heritage rails, the Verde Canyon’s  rare riparian area comprises only 2% of Arizona landscape. Operating since 1912, the Railroad is right at home within its wild corridor, sharing the Canyon with javelina, mule deer, elk, coyote, bear, heron, turkey, bald eagles and a wealth of resident and migrating raptors.  Bald eagles generally nest along the Verde River from mid-winter to late spring, with eaglets fledging their nests in mid-May.

    Railroading fans and history buffs of all ages will have one more reason to visit Texas State Railroad in 2018.  During the spring of 2018, Texas State Railroad (TSR) will place into service a restored FP9 streamlined passenger unit, number TSR 125.

    The addition of this classic diesel locomotive to the railroad’s fleet culminates a five-year effort initiated by the Texas State Rail Authority and completed by The Western Group. Both entities are enthusiastic about finalizing the restoration of this period diesel which complements the railroad’s notable roster of steam engines. These remarkably restored engines aren’t just for show; all of the railroad’s historic powerhorses provide timeless journeys along the Piney Woods Route between Palestine and Rusk, Texas.

    Between 1954 and 1959, General Motors built 481 of the FP9 and FP7 locomotives to haul passengers during the “Golden Age” of streamliners. Debuting in March 1957, TSR 125 was fabricated for the Canadian National Railway for use on passenger trains like its famous “Super Continental” which operated from Montreal to Vancouver, British Columbia. The unit develops 1750 horsepower from its 16-cylinder diesel engine while a separate generator provides electrical power for heating, air conditioning and interior lighting. It is identical to locomotives used by several historic railroads which served Texas, including the Rock Island, the Cotton Belt, Southern Pacific, Frisco and the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad, also known as the “Katy.”

    Texas State Railroad will apply a paint scheme inspired by Katy’s fleet of passenger diesels, including those used on the famed “Texas Special” which operated between St. Louis and San Antonio. The striking red, yellow and silver palette is the perfect complement to the railroad’s historic passenger car color scheme. The restored FP9 diesel will pull these 1920s cars on a number of select dates throughout the 2018 season.

    TSR’s sister Railroad, Verde Canyon Railroad, based in Clarkdale, Arizona, also operates two rare FP7 streamlined locomotives on its excursion trains through the picturesque Verde Canyon near Sedona, Arizona.     The annual ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF), which will begin on 22nd January in Chiang Mai, Thailand, will provide an excellent platform for Myanmar among international delegates and media to showcase its diverse range of new and exciting tourism products, services and events of the country.

    In 2017, Myanmar recorded a total of 1.1 million arrivals at Yangon International Airport. It was an increase of 7% compared to arrivals in the same period of 2016.  Visa exemption between Myanmar and some ASEAN countries have increased arrival recorded growth Vietnam (+75%), the Philippines (+62%) and Singapore (+20%) and Thailand (12%).  Recent International Air carrier increase to Myanmar will also make the destination appealing to a wider audience.

    As Myanmar is getting more tourists, new hotels are opening their doors in this country. Well-known international chains: Pullman, Kempinski, MGallery, Excelsior will start their business before the end of 2018 and it is expected to create more jobs opportunity for locals.

    In line with ATF 2018 theme “Sustainable Connectivity, Boundless Prosperity”, Myanmar has been focused on economic and social opportunities for people working in the tourism sector and helped to develop all communities in the country including the more remote areas. Overland programs between Myanmar and Thailand have been offered through one of the 4 official border posts. We do hope that it will be easy to enter and depart also through border post with Indian and China in the future to expend our connectivity between neighbouring countries.     ​​​​​​​The Inn at Riverwalk, an independently-owned hotel in the Vail Valley, now affiliated with Choice Hotels as a member of the Ascend Collection, has been getting a lot of attention lately—attention to detail. After months of work remodeling, refurbishing, refinishing and refurnishing, it’s time for the big reveal.

    Three months and $3 million is what it took to complete the top-to-bottom renovation that included upgrades to nearly every part of the hotel, from the lobby to the guest rooms and outdoor spaces. The hotel temporarily closed for the renovation in September and reopened to guests right before Christmas; now, with the work complete and the holiday season in the books, The Inn at Riverwalk is ready to host a community party to celebrate and show off its chic new look.

    ​The open house will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 31, with the official ribbon cutting at 5 p.m. Visit with the owners, meet the staff and see what all the commotion these past months has been about. Event guests are invited to take tours of the property and socialize over appetizers prepared by Zino Ristorante. There will also be refreshments of wine, beer and non-alcoholic choices.

    ​The changes at The Inn at Riverwalk are immediately evident. Upon entering, a new reception desk redefines the guest experience, leading to a cozy and comfortable lobby. A stone fireplace surrounded by modern furnishings is the focal point for the communal gathering space. Warm and inviting, it’s the perfect place to settle in with a book, play games with family and friends or get a little work done. Other new additions include a deluxe coffee bar, a sundry shop, a water bottle-filling station and Gear Garage—where guests can borrow outdoor equipment such as bikes and snowshoes to explore the area.

    ​The elevators, corridors and guest rooms have all been updated. There are 14 deluxe king and 46 deluxe double queen bedrooms—all designed to be “mountain modern.” ADA compliant rooms provide greater access and comfort for guests, while seven condominiums in one-and two-bedroom configurations with fireplaces and kitchens round out the offerings. Changes include new color schemes, flooring, ceilings, bathrooms and amenities, such as updated 43” flat screen televisions and device charging stations built into the bedside table lighting.

    ​The fitness room has been relocated to the adjacent 1st & Main building, an airy space with floor-to-ceiling windows that take advantage of the gorgeous north-facing views. Guests can work out on all-new Technogym equipment. Outdoors, pool and hot tub surfaces have been completely refurbished. The al fresco space also includes updated landscaping, a firepit for warming and ambiance, lounge chairs, tables and Adirondack-style seating.

    Engcon, the world’s leading manufacturer of tiltrotators – the hydraulic wrist accessory that improves the efficiency, profitability and safety for 1 to 33 metric tonne excavators – has expanded its production facilities in Poland to meet demand.

    Engcon had barely finished celebrating the opening of its new factory in Strömsund, Sweden, before announcing its next investment to extend its factory in Poland. One of the reasons for the investment is to meet the growing demand for tiltrotators in Europe, especially in France, Holland and the U.K.

    Europe has discovered the tiltrotator. It all started with explosive growth in sales back in the early 2000s. That meant that we had to seriously step up our rate of production.

    “I am pleased and proud of the growth we have been experiencing since starting up in Poland,” Stig Engström, founder and owner of Engcon says. “We built the factory in Niepruszewo in 2012 to meet growing demand for buckets, ground compactors, grabbers and welded components. Due to our continued sales growth, we have just had the factory extended.”

    The extension has added 1,000 square meters (10,764 square feet) to the factory, which will host a new assembly hall, testing facilities and an expanded space for processing, sheet metal cutting and burring. The office section has also been extended and Engcon has invested a total of more than £1.5 million in building the extension and procuring new equipment.

    “Europe has discovered the tiltrotator,” confirms Stig. “It all started with explosive growth in sales back in the early 2000s. That meant that we had to seriously step up our rate of production.”

    In 2003, Engcon decided to establish a strategic presence in Poland and to start up manufacturing operations in the country. The company leased a factory building and began production.

    “Starting up production in Poland gave us a real boost,” continues Stig. “Eventually, we began reaching such large volumes that we needed to invest again. We bought a larger industrial site and built a new, modern factory which opened its doors in 2012. The factory was built entirely in line with our Swedish requirements.”

    As the factory now expands its capacity, it looks to the factory in Strömsund, which recently implemented a completely automatic testing facility. This concept is currently being replicated in Poland for the products manufactured there.

    “It is important for us to have the same conditions in Poland as we do in our other facilities so that we can reach our common quality objectives,” adds Dan Ekholm, production manager for the Engcon Group. “This expansion of our operations in Poland creates five new jobs directly and it looks like there will be many more on the way.”

The first Chocolate Lovers’ Special rolls out of the Rusk station on Saturday, Feb. 10, with another excursion following on Sunday, Feb. 11.

    Passengers will be indulged with a decadent array of Texas-style desserts while riding the rails through the historic hill county of the Piney Woods. One of the inspiring chocolate delicacies on the menu is the Railroad’s very own version of the popular “Texas Sheet Cake,” described by noted New York-based travel, fashion and active lifestyle writer Jillian Downer as “the little black dress of sheet cakes.”

    It is hard to imagine another food that evokes a craving equal to that of chocolate. The gooey, dark, rich sweet has been branded with many names including xocoatl, jocolatte and chockelet, but despite its title, from ancient civilization to the cyber-powered 21st-century society, one common thread remains: chocolate is a heavenly treat that is in a category all by itself. When words are inadequate to express one’s feelings for another, chocolate will say it all.

    The next important step is to get to safety and call an ambulance. One should always be aware of any dangers such as fires. It is important to call 911 and notify authorities of all serious injuries, deaths, and property damage.

    The final important step is to exchange insurance information with the other driver and get the information of those who witnessed the crash. Taking pictures of the scene of the accident is a good idea.

    If a police report was not filed, and there was property damage, one must report the accident to the New Jersey Motor Vehicles Commission.

    After this, it is a good idea to get a lawyer. They can help people navigate the law. Many people have a hard time dealing with the insurance companies, the other driver, and all of the other difficulties that come with a car crash.

    In an announcement today from CykelHaus Race Promotions, Cycling Canada and The Pan-American Cycling Confederation, it was revealed that the Pan-American Cyclo-cross Championships will be held in Midland, Ontario, Canada, on Nov. 3-4, 2018.

    It marks the first time ever that Canada will host the championships, announced Silver Goose Event Director John Hauser. “Our team is incredibly excited to invite the Americas to Midland. It is a fantastic opportunity, and the benefits will go well beyond cycling for our rural community. We have partnered with the local Georgian Bay General Hospital Foundation to raise funds through the event.”

    Cyclo-cross continues to be one of our country’s most sought-after racing disciplines. Welcoming the Pan-American Cyclo-cross Championships to Canada will be a testament to the strong level of organization and competition that our country has become known for in recent years.

    The Pan-American Championships were awarded to Midland Ontario for two years, including the 2018 and 2019 race seasons. The championships have previously been held in the U.S. in Louisville, Kentucky, and Cincinnati, Ohio.

    Pan-American Champions will be selected in five categories of elite racing: Junior Men, U-23 Women and Men, Elite Women and Men. The championships provide an opportunity for racers to gain valuable UCI points for international seeding as well as to receive the prestigious Pan-Am Champion’s jersey to wear in competition.

    For the first time, a Masters Pan-American Championships will be held, offering the title to racers in 10-year age groups, aged 35 and above. Hauser commented, “It’s a great way to draw racers of all ages to the event, whether elite or masters. The chance to win a Pan-Am jersey will make for exciting competition for all ages.”

    The Pan-American Cyclo-cross Championships are open to racers from the 44 nations of the Pan-American Cycling Confederation (COPACI) spanning the continents from the Arctic Circle to Tierra del Fuego. Chairman of the Pan-American Cyclo-cross Commission Brook Watts noted, “The announcement is further proof of the continued globalization of our sport as the championship begins to draw interest and host bids from other nations.”

    A full weekend of racing is scheduled including a UCI C2 race and the Master’s Pan-American Championships on Saturday. On Sunday the racing continues with the elite Pan-American categories as well as racing for all other categories.

    The complete international cyclo-cross calendar, including the Pan-American Championships, will be formally announced in early February after ratification by the UCI Management Commission.
