    The importance of wearing safety helmets, bicycle-appropriate clothing and following traffic rules are just some of the topics covered in the recently released Bike Rental Central Park safety guide.

    The guide was inspired by statistics from the National Highway Transportation Safety Association (NHTSA). By law, the NHTSA points out that bicycles are vehicles, and those operators have the same rights and responsibilities as those of motor vehicles.

    Designated areas for pedestrians and cyclists like the 11-mile Hudson River Greenway make the city fun and easy to get around. Always follow the rules of the road, obey traffic signs, use hand signals and ride with the traffic.

    The fatality numbers, however, have been rising consistently. In 2015, there were 818 bicycle fatalities; in 2016, that number rose to 840. The final numbers for 2017 are not yet in, but it’s expected that they’ll also rise. In addition, there are approximately 40,000-45,000 non-fatal injuries per year, with the average age hovering in the early to mid-40s.

    Distracted driving is often thought of only in terms of motor vehicles, but it applies to bicyclists — so phones and earbuds should be left at home. As for “road rage,” the guide says it’s simple: “Keep your cool,” pointing out that it is not necessary — or wise — to get into heated discussions or to use inappropriate gestures to anyone, but especially strangers.

    The guide points out that one must first decide if he or she wants complete protection or something relatively simple and inexpensive that will possibly distract thieves.

    “Unfortunately, locks can’t prevent 100 percent of all thefts,” said Blair Nicole ”but the idea is to make it as difficult as possible for them.”

    Inspired by a study proving the importance of scenery on learning and cognition abilities, Bike Rental Central Park, the company that offers group bicycling tours throughout the City, has released a guide on the 10 best bike paths in New York.

    “The study, conducted by The University of Michigan, gave two groups a cognitive test. After the test, they sent the groups out,  one group through urban streets; the other in a garden. When they came back they were tested, and the ones who spent time in the garden scored higher,” said Bike Rental Central Park Spokesperson Blair Nicole.

    While trains, buses, and taxis may still be the predominant ways to get around New York City, biking has grown much more popular in recent years. New Yorkers take over 450,000 bike trips every day, and on many streets, there are more bikes than cars.

    One of the most popular paths is The Central Park Loop.  It explores the park’s 820 acres of attractions, exhibits and architectural gems, including The Great Lawn, one of the most famous lawns in the world having concerts for Diana Ross, the Metropolitan Opera, and the New York Philharmonic. Riders can also explore The Bethesda Fountain, The Bow Bridge, Central Park Zoo, The Museum of the City of New York, and over 20 playgrounds.

    Those longing for an extended journey can ride on The Pier 84 to City Island bike path. This path is about 18 miles long, riding in Manhattan, through The Bronx, and across the Hudson River. Spectacular scenery includes a huge bird population, a fishing village, and some massive Victorian mansions and a large selection of restaurants in City Island.

    The original pistols used in the infamous 1804 duel between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr are on display at the Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum through June 24. They are featured in the exhibition “Alexander Hamilton: Soldier, Secretary, Icon,” along with mail, portraits, and postage and revenue stamps reflective of Hamilton’s life and career as the first U.S. treasury secretary.

    The rare public showing represents the first time the pistols have been on public display in the Washington area.

    Visitors of all ages will be drawn in to the man behind the musical that is sweeping the nation.

    The full exhibition remains on view through next March. Its opening coincides with the June opening of the hit Broadway play, Hamilton: An American Musical, at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

     The original dueling pistols used by Hamilton, former secretary of the treasury and retired two-star general, and Vice President Aaron Burr in the duel that resulted in Hamilton’s death are on loan to the museum from JPMorgan Chase & Co.

    In a scene that is scarcely imaginable today, on July 11, 1804, Burr killed Hamilton in a duel. Burr had lost the U.S. presidential election of 1800 and the New York governor’s race of 1804. He blamed Hamilton’s outspoken opposition for both losses—especially a letter attributed to Hamilton and published in the Albany Register that referred to Burr as “despicable.” Burr then issued the challenge to a duel, which was set for a location outside New York City in nearby New Jersey.

    In the 215 years since his untimely death at 49 in the duel with Burr, Hamilton has become an American icon. Stamps, money, movies, television miniseries, and now a hit Broadway musical, commemorate his meteoric rise and his sweeping vision for America’s future.

    “In a Federalist-style gallery within the museum’s William H. Gross Stamp Gallery, visitors will see objects highlighting Hamilton’s extraordinary influence on our country,” said Elliot Gruber, director of the museum. “Visitors of all ages will be drawn in to the man behind the musical that is sweeping the nation.”

    The exhibition features free franked covers signed by Hamilton from 1789 to 1794. As secretary of the treasury, he was permitted to send official correspondence for free by signing his name. This ensured that customs inspectors and collectors all over the country were kept busy responding to ceaseless requests for information about imports and exports, tonnage and construction of ships, trade routes and ports of call. His ability to interpret and remember this data made Hamilton the best-informed member of President George Washington’s first Cabinet.

    The earliest postage stamps honoring Hamilton are on display, highlighting a marble bust of him at age 49, made by the Italian sculptor Giuseppe Ceracchi in 1794, as well as the original steel die for the 30-cent stamp. Multiple copies were made from the original bust. The exhibition showcases the one that belonged to Levi Woodbury, one of Hamilton’s successors as secretary of the treasury. It passed to Woodbury’s son-in-law, Montgomery Blair, who was postmaster general from 1861 to 1864. The bust is on loan from the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery. The Ceracchi bust of Hamilton appeared on the 30 cent stamp from 1870 until 1890. Hamilton’s portrait did not appear on postage again until 1956.

    “History remembers Alexander Hamilton as the pioneering first secretary of the treasury, but he was also responsible for the Post Office Department,” said Daniel Piazza, chief curator of philately. “He used the mail to collect import and export data from customs officers all over the country, and his ability to interpret this data made Hamilton the best informed member of Washington’s first Cabinet.”

    A special website augments the exhibition, providing additional access to the rich content presented. The museum is hosting a series of educational programs and events in support of the exhibition.​

    While notably one of Central America’s most under the radar destinations, Honduras is making strides in its tourism sector. The country has enjoyed a steady increase in tourism arrivals over the past few years, having welcomed more than two million visitors in 2017, which represent more than U.S. $700 million in tourist spending. The country’s cruise offering is a main driver for its tourism industry, with several new cruise ships arriving in 2017. Honduras has also generated growth in its connectivity and announced new hotel developments. Below are the most recent achievements for the Honduras Institute of Tourism:

    Connectivity

    The International Airport of Juan Manuel Galvez in Roatan will soon undergo multiple upgrades including an extension of the runway and a new building for passengers. These upgrades will allow the airport to receive more planes, as well as better attend to passengers. Another important milestone for Honduras was the addition of Air Europa offering weekly direct flights from Madrid, Spain, to San Pedro Sula, Honduras. This new route has allowed greater connectivity for the country to more than 20 European destinations and more than one thousand sales channels for the marketing of airline tickets. The weekly Air Europa flight began in April 2017 when flight occupancy exceeded 85 percent. Since then, Air Europa expanded the capacity of the aircraft on that route with an Airbus 330-300 able to accommodate 388 passengers, adding 89 more seats. The possibility of increasing the frequency to two flights per week is currently under consideration.

    Cruise

    The cruise sector is an instrumental contributor to Honduras’ tourism industry, as the country welcomed more than a million cruise passengers in 2017 representing a nearly 5 percent increase over 2016. Most recently, Roatan has welcomed new cruise ships including Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Reflection, Viking Ocean’s Viking Sky and TUI Cruises’ Mein Schiff from Germany.

    New Tourism Experiences

    While Honduras is well known for its impressive archeological sites such as Copan, and its unmatched diving on the Caribbean coast, the Honduras Tourism Board is now making an emphasis to showcase its exquisite Birdwatching experience. Honduras is one of the countries in Central America featuring the most protected land with 121 areas and is home to more than 770 species of birds. Most recently, efforts have focused on the promotion and development of services offered for Birdwatching, for which there are excellent guides and tour operators specialized in this area. The varied ecosystems in Honduras allow visitors to see many species of birds including the Ocellated Quail, Keel-billed Motmot, Lovely Cotinga, Agami Heron and the Honduran Emerald Hummingbird.

For years, Honduras has been acclaimed for its coffee and last year, the coffee beans grown by Honduras’ José Abelardo Díaz Enamorado were designated as the “Best of the Best” in the 2017 Ernesto Illy International Coffee Awards. There are six areas to experience the Coffee Route in Honduras: Copan, Opalaca, Montecillos, Comayagua, El Paraíso and Agalta.

    Some of Honduras’ attractions have also been recognized among the best by top media outlets. Mary’s Place, located in Roatan, was recently listed among USA Today 10Best Reader’ Choice 2018 as one of the Caribbean’s best dive sites. Mary’s Place provides a habitat for marine critters including coral, sponge and seahorses.     The local citizens’ group, Palm Springs Neighbors for Neighborhoods, has announced that June 5 will be the voting date for their ballot initiative to limit absentee-owner short-term rentals (STRs) in R1 zoned residential neighborhoods. 

    If it passes, the Measure: 

    As is, residents have no protection from the proliferation of short-term rentals in their neighborhoods.

    ✓ Will limit absentee-owner rentals to a minimum of 28 days or more per stay in residential R1-zoned single-family neighborhoods.

    ✓ Will give STR owners two years to adjust their business model or relocate their business to an area not zoned R-1.

    ✓ Will not affect home sharing or owner-hosted vacation rentals. 

    ✓ Will not affect Condos which have HOA’s that set their own rules.  And it won’t affect Apartment Renters.  In 2016, Palm Springs passed an ordinance stopping apartment units from converting to short-term rentals.

    This initiative represents the first time residents of a major tourist city have taken this issue to the ballot box.

    Palm Springs, with approximately 2,000 STRs,  has more single-family short-term vacation rentals per capita than any other city in the country.   It has become a mecca for out of town investors to own and operate full-time commercial mini-hotels throughout the city’s many residential neighborhoods.

    Steve Rose, the group’s organizer said, “I was shocked when I read the City’s Impact Report. It states that 467,000 visitors stayed in short-term vacation rentals in 2017.  This is an outrageous number of strangers to inject into R1-zoned residential neighborhoods, which house fewer than 28,000 residents. Everyone deserves somewhere safe and secure to call home, that is what living in a neighborhood is all about.  As is, residents have no protection from the proliferation of short-term rentals in their neighborhoods.”

    “It should not be the responsibility of residential neighborhoods to generate business tax revenue. Palm Springs has a multitude of hotels, motels and boutique inns for our tourists to stay in – and more in the works.  Citizens’ requests for reasonable restrictions on STRs have been dismissed for the last time.  It is time for the residents to have their voices heard,” said Rob Grimm, PSN4N Campaign Manager. 

    Residents of Palm Springs will be able to vote on the ballot measure in the California state primary on June 5.

    Analysis finds SPI well-positioned to be the first new U.S. port of call in a half-century

    SPI Cruise Group, a consortium of cruise industry experts retained by South Padre Island, Texas, to evaluate the popular vacation destination’s suitability to become a cruise port of call, has issued its initial findings. Based on a site inspection in December 2017, the group has completed a matrix analysis to evaluate SPI’s fitness on maritime viability, uniqueness and branding, consumer demand and revenue possibilities.

    Maritime Viability

    An initial desktop study of available meteorological and oceanographic data indicated safe harbor conditions protected from predominant wind and waves due to the location on the eastern shore of the bayside of the world’s largest barrier island. Three potential berthing locations were identified, each requiring a different level of dredging.

    Assessment of potential landside cruise guest reception facilities led to the conclusion that they should be limited and temporary, with minimal environmental impact. Considering the plans for the redevelopment of Isla Blanca Park, cruise guest services structures can be limited in scope (and cost). The group ascertained that the greater park area on the south end of the island is one of the best natural cruise ship arrival zones in the Caribbean, as almost no other berth in the region is immediately adjacent to a natural white sand beach.

    The preferred berthing site would lend itself to several pier configurations with relatively small environmental footprints and the least amount of dredging required. A Phase 1 stationary pier could be expanded later with a floating structure or additional gangway elements connecting to shore.

    Uniqueness and Branding

    The group has identified three predominant brand destination themes that would serve South Padre Island well in attracting cruise industry attention:

    ·      Tropical Adventures — National Geographic listed South Padre Island among the world’s top 13 beaches for kiteboarding, and Canadian Traveller says it’s a great place to learn to surf or paddleboard. With 34 miles of enticing beach, SPI offers a wealth of watersports and pastimes that are well-suited to today’s more active cruise guests. Whether it’s deep-sea fishing or a dolphin-watching tour, there is an array of tropical adventures — from horseback riding on the beach to scuba diving, jet skiing, and deep-sea fishing —  all available within 4 to 5 miles of the ship.

    ·      Eco-Tourism — As the world’s largest barrier island, SPI is a world-class destination in terms of biodiversity. With existing attractions such as the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center, Sea Turtle Inc. or dolphin-watching tours, there are plenty of sustainable and eco-friendly facilities and activities to entice cruise passengers. And for those interested in “voluntourism,” there are even organized dune-planting outings. Given the emphasis on sustainability and eco-awareness among travelers, this theme would provide a dynamic mix of attractions and messaging.

    ·      Historical Destination — Padre Island has a long and rich history dating from the early 16th century and has been owned by Spain, Mexico, the Republic of Texas and, most recently, the United States. Heritage tours could be created starting with the Native American story through the colonial era, including shipwreck maps and trips to the 1830s-era lighthouse at Port Isabel.

    Consumer Demand

    South Padre Island receives 4.5 million visitors per year, so there already is significant consumer demand for the product as a vacation destination.

    While consumers in Texas and the lower Midwest have long known about the charm of South Padre Island, consumer interest in the destination is actually national in scope. The group considered SPI’s “Distribution of Interest” map of the U.S. and found that requests for information about SPI through online and magazine advertising have come in from across the entire country, with significant concentrations in the Northeast, the Great Lakes region, California and even Florida.

    Overlaying that map with a map of cruise guest feeder markets showed significant overlap, indicating that interest in SPI as a vacation destination could relatively easily be developed into interest in the island as a cruise port of call.

    Revenue Possibilities

    A major attractant for cruise lines is the availability of shore excursion opportunities in proximity to a port of call. In this respect, SPI has a diversified and mature tourism infrastructure with a variety of potential shore tours well within distances that could be accommodated on a daylong ship call.

    SPI Cruise Group identified several one-of-a-kind attractions:

    ·      A white sand beach within walking distance of the ship. 

    ·      Three exciting and different day tours to world-class, unusual and attractive venues: King Ranch, the Gladys Porter Zoo and Nuevo Progreso, Mexico. 

    ·      A Schlitterbahn waterpark within walking distance of the ship.

    ·      Two nationally recognized ecological attractions, the SPI Birding & Nature Center and Sea Turtle Inc.

    After studying their findings, SPI Cruise Group concluded that South Padre Island has all the attributes necessary to support cruise tourism as a port of call.

    “There hasn’t been a new U.S. cruise port of call since Key West hosted its first cruise ship in 1969, and there’s a reason for that,” said Jay Lewis, managing director of MarketScope Global and project leader for the SPI Cruise group. “It takes a very specific combination of attributes for a place to qualify as a cruise port of call. Like Key West, South Padre Island has history, culture, an inviting climate and both waterside and landside attractions in a compact package as well as a safe, navigable harbor and a berthing location just steps from the beach. I can’t think of another American destination that offers a similar combination.”
