  • Workplace support for learning disabilities falls short, Hilton study finds – Luxury Hospitality Magazine

    Two thirds of people with learning disabilities say their employers have not asked about what they need to succeed at work

    New research from Hilton shows that two thirds (66%) of those with a learning disability say their employers have not asked them what they need to succeed in their roles. As a result, nearly six in 10 (57%) feel like the company they work for isn’t equipped to support them.

    The research of more than 2,000 people in the UK, including 500 people with learning disabilities such as Down’s Syndrome and Autistic Spectrum Disorder, and their carers, gives a clear indication as to how employers can improve experiences and prospects of those questioned.

    Those with a learning disability cited a number of reasons as to why keeping a job was difficult, but relationships were at the heart of the challenges; almost half (49%) said they did not have the right support from their employer while 44% said they did not get the right support from their team/colleagues.

    Counsel to employers

    There is also clear counsel from those questioned to employers when it comes to improving workplace support. Over half of people (56%) want more on-the-job training, and 38% say they would like to see the introduction of a mentor or buddy system for additional support.

    Partnerships are key

    Working with industry partners has been integral in enabling Hilton to improve workplace support across its UK hotels. For example, Hilton’s 10-year partnership with Aurora Foxes, a hospitality college and training hotel supporting young people with learning disabilities, has provided bespoke training, work experience and employment opportunities to 89 people across Hilton, with 19 former students currently building careers within Hilton’s hotels.

    Similarly, Hilton’s long-standing partnership with the Down’s Syndrome Association’s WorkFit programme has opened doors for talented individuals, resulting in 55 individuals receiving work placements across the UK with 43 individuals currently working at Hilton hotels.

    The study also reveals when it comes to the industries where people with a learning disability and their carers think they can succeed – retail (44%) and hospitality and tourism (43%) come top. Three in five (61%) individuals with learning disabilities also note their previous roles in hospitality, underlining the sector’s valuable role in improving employment outcomes.

    Public support for better opportunities

    The research also clearly shows that the public believes better career opportunities should be offered to people with learning disabilities. Eight in 10 (82%) believe companies should give access to better job prospects to people with learning disabilities.

    The latest Mencap figures show that there are 1.5 million people with learning disabilities in the UK, but just 5% are currently employed.

    Moreover, 94% of respondents who have interacted with a person who has a learning disability in a service setting said it was a positive experience. A further seven in 10 (69%) say that their experience inspired them to think differently about people with learning disabilities and the overwhelming majority (86%) think someone with a learning disability can excel in the workplace.

  • Isolated flight delays may spread as air traffic controllers go without pay during shutdown

    Air traffic controllers missed their paychecks Tuesday because of the ongoing government shutdown, and that has Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and the head of the controllers’ union concerned that flight delays could multiply as increasingly stressed-out controllers call out sick.

    Recent absences have led to a number of isolated delays around the country because the Federal Aviation Administration was already extremely short on controllers prior to the shutdown. The FAA restricts the number of flights landing and taking off at an airport anytime there is a shortage of controllers to ensure safety.

    There’s no way to predict when or where delays might happen because even a small number of absences can disrupt operations at times. Sometimes the delays are only 30 minutes, but some airports have reported delays more than two hours long — and some have even had to stop all flights temporarily.

    So far, most of the delays have been isolated and temporary. Aviation analytics firm Cirium said that normally about 20% of all flights are delayed more than 15 minutes for a variety of reasons.

    The data Cirium tracks shows there has not been a dramatic increase in the total number of delays overall since the shutdown began on Oct. 1. Nearly 80% of the flights at a sample of 14 major airports nationwide have still been on time this month.

    Though a two-hour-long staffing-related ground stop at Los Angeles International Airport made national news on Sunday, a major thunderstorm in Dallas that day had a bigger impact on flights when only about 44% of flights were on time. Cirium said 72% of the flights out of LAX were still on time Sunday.

    But Duffy and the president of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association Nick Daniels have continued to emphasize the pressure that controllers are feeling. They say the problems are likely to only get worse the longer the shutdown continues.

    “Air traffic controllers have to have 100% of focus 100% of the time,” Daniels said Tuesday at a news conference alongside Duffy at LaGuardia Airport in New York. “And I’m watching air traffic controllers going to work. I’m getting the stories. They’re worried about paying for medicine for their daughter. I got a message from a controller that said, ‘I’m running out of money. And if she doesn’t get the medicine she needs, she dies. That’s the end.’”

    Controllers gathered outside 20 airports nationwide Tuesday to hand out leaflets urging an end to the shutdown as soon as possible. Worrying about how to pay their bills is driving some to take second jobs to make ends meet.

    The number of controllers calling in sick has increased during the shutdown both because of their frustration with the situation and because controllers need the time off to work second jobs instead of continuing to work six days a week like many of them routinely do. Duffy has said that controllers could be fired if they abuse their sick time, but the vast majority of them have continued to show up for work every day.

    Air traffic controller Joe Segretto, who works at a regional radar facility that directs planes in and out of airports in the New York area, said morale is suffering as controllers worry more about money.

    “The pressure is real,” Segretto said. “We have people trying to keep these airplanes safe. We have trainees — that are trying to learn a new job that is very fast-paced, very stressful, very complex — now having to worry about how they’re going to pay bills.”

    Duffy said the shutdown is also making it harder for the government to reduce the longstanding shortage of about 3,000 controllers. He said that some students have dropped out of the air traffic controller academy in Oklahoma City, and younger controllers who are still training to do the job might abandon the career because they can’t afford to go without pay.

    “This shutdown is making it harder for me to accomplish those goals,” Duffy said.

    The longer the shutdown continues, pressure will continue to build on Congress to reach an agreement to reopen the government. During the 35-day shutdown in President Donald Trump’s first term the disruptions to flights across the country contributed to the end of that disruption. But so far, Democrats and Republicans have shown little sign of reaching a deal to fund the government.

  • 5 more arrests as Louvre jewel heist probe deepens and key details emerge

    PARIS (AP) — The dragnet tightened around the Louvre thieves on Thursday. Five more people were seized in the crown-jewels heist — including a suspect tied by DNA — the Paris prosecutor said, widening the sweep across the capital and its suburbs.

    Authorities said three of the four alleged members of the “commando” team, as French media have dubbed the robbers, are now in custody.

    The late-night operations in Paris and nearby Seine-Saint-Denis lift the total arrested to seven. Prosecutor Laure Beccuau told RTL that one detainee is suspected of belonging to the brazen quartet that burst into the Apollo Gallery in broad daylight on Oct. 19; others held “may be able to inform us about how the events unfolded.”

    Beccuau called the response an “exceptional mobilization” — about 100 investigators, seven days a week, with roughly 150 forensic samples analyzed and 189 items sealed as evidence.

    Even so, she said the latest arrests did not uncover the loot — a trove valued around $102 million that includes a diamond-and-emerald necklace Napoleon gave to Empress Marie-Louise as a wedding gift, jewels tied to 19th-century Queens Marie-Amélie and Hortense, and Empress Eugénie’s pearl-and-diamond tiara.

    Only one relic has surfaced so far — Eugénie’s crown, damaged but salvageable, dropped in the escape.

    Beccuau renewed her appeal: “These jewels are now, of course, unsellable… There’s still time to give them back.”

    Experts warn the gold could be melted and the stones re-cut to erase their past.

    From Louvres to the Louvre: Planning a 4-minute crime

    Key planning details have snapped into focus. Nine days before the raid, a mover who owns a truck-mounted lift — the kind movers use to hoist furniture through Parisian windows — was mysteriously booked for a “moving job” on the French classifieds site Leboncoin, a site similar to Craigslist, Beccuau said Wednesday.

    When he arrived in the town of Louvres, north of Paris, around 10 a.m. on Oct. 10, two men ambushed him and stole the lift truck.

    On the day of the heist itself, that same vehicle idled beneath the Paris museum’s riverside façade.

    Online observers have noted a remarkable coincidence: How a plot that began in Louvres ended at the Louvre.

    At 9:30 a.m. the basket lift rose to the Apollo Gallery window; at 9:34 the glass gave way; by 9:38 the crew was gone — a four-minute strike. Only the “near-simultaneous” arrival of police and museum security stopped the thieves from torching the lift and preserved crucial traces, the prosecutor said.

    Security footage shows at least four men forcing a window, cutting into two display cases with power tools and fleeing on two scooters toward eastern Paris. Investigators say there is no sign of insider help for now, though they are not ruling out a wider network beyond the four on camera.

    The reckoning over security

    French police have acknowledged major gaps in the Louvre’s defenses, turning an audacious theft — carried out as visitors walked the corridors — into a national reckoning over how France protects its treasures.

    Paris police chief Patrice Faure told senators the first alert to police came not from the Louvre’s security systems but from a cyclist outside who dialed the emergency line after seeing helmeted men with a basket lift. He acknowledged that aging, partly analog cameras and slow fixes left seams; $93 million of CCTV cabling work won’t finish before 2029–30, and the Louvre’s camera authorization even lapsed in July. Officers arrived fast, he said, but the delay came earlier in the chain.

    Speaking to AP, former bank robber David Desclos characterized the heist as textbook and said he had warned the Louvre of glaring vulnerabilities in the layout of the Apollo Gallery. The Louvre has not responded to the claim.

    Who’s charged already

    Two earlier suspects, men aged 34 and 39 from Aubervilliers, north of Paris, were charged Wednesday with theft by an organized gang and criminal conspiracy after nearly 96 hours in custody. Beccuau said both gave “minimalist” statements and “partially admitted” their involvement.

    One was stopped at Charles-de-Gaulle Airport with a one-way ticket to Algeria; his DNA matched a scooter used in the getaway.

    French law normally keeps active investigations under a shroud of secrecy to protect police work and victims’ privacy. Only the prosecutor may speak publicly, though in high-profile cases police unions have occasionally shared partial details.

    The brazen smash-and-grab inside the world’s most-visited museum stunned the heritage world. Four men, a lift truck and a stopwatch turned the Apollo Gallery’s blaze of gold and light into a crime scene — and a test of how France guards what it holds most dear.

    During the event, THRENDS, a consulting firm specializing in data analysis and business intelligence for the Hospitality Real Estate sector, presented the 2025 edition of the “Luxury Hospitality Report.” The report, now in its fifth year, monitors the Italian luxury hospitality segment, providing data and insights on volumes, hotel chains and brands, revenues, profit margins, transactions, and CapEx.

    The atmosphere of the day was enriched by the olfactory signature “Essenza Luxe”: a bespoke fragrance, meticulously crafted and created exclusively for the event, which offered participants a truly unique and immersive sensory experience.

    Cruise the Great Lakes, the region’s cruise marketing program, announced today its forecast for the 2026 cruising season at a press conference in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The 2026 season continues the long-term growth of Great Lakes cruising, delivering more than 23,000 passengers, over 800 port visits, and a record-breaking $300 million (US) economic impact on large and small regional destinations.

    Economic impact

    The economic impact of cruising on the Great Lakes is expected to exceed $300 million (US) in 2026, a 25% increase from 2025. More passengers, more port visits, higher shoreside spending, and a rising price premium for Great Lakes cruises are critical drivers of this growth. The ongoing expansion of Great Lakes cruising continues to bring significant economic benefits to both large and small port communities throughout the region.

    Cruise Lines and Ships

    A new cruise line will enter the Great Lakes market in 2026–American Cruise Lines will bring ships to U.S. ports in the region. The itinerary highlights the growing variety of travel options.

    In total, seven cruise lines are scheduled to operate on the Great Lakes in 2026, including: Pearl Seas, Ponant, St. Lawrence Cruise Lines, Victory, Viking, Hapag-Lloyd and American Cruise Lines. These lines will operate 10 ships cruising the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River in 2026.

    Passenger visits

    In 2026, Great Lakes cruises are projected to welcome over 23,000 individual passengers, a 5% increase from 2025. More than 800 port visits are planned, which is nearly 15% higher than last year. And the total number of cruise passenger visits across the region is estimated at nearly 175,000, up nearly 15% from 2025.

    “Great Lakes cruising does more than delight passengers. It drives dollars to shorelines across the region,” said Wisconsin Tourism Secretary and Cruise the Great Lakes Chair Anne Sayers. “The expected growth means more travelers making lifelong memories, more passengers visiting businesses in port cities, and more economic impact in Wisconsin and across the Great Lakes region.”

    “As we look to 2026, we’re excited to see continued growth in the Great Lakes cruise sector,” said Sally Davis Berry, Tourism Director of Cruise the Great Lakes. “We forecast this upcoming season to be even stronger than 2025, both in terms of passenger numbers, destinations visited, and economic impact, which underscores the appeal of cruising in the Great Lakes.”

Each year, SKI Magazine invites readers across North America to rank their favourite ski destinations in its Reader Resort Survey, which gathers nearly 20,000 responses. Through the survey resorts are evaluated by skiers across 17 different criteria including core metrics like snow quality, and grooming and guest services to lighter elements like lodging, nightlife, and après-ski experiences. For Banff Sunshine, the Alberta resort has now landed in Ski Mag’s top 5 resorts in north America for 4 consecutive winters.     Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo has received the Good Design Award 2025 for its pioneering Garden Cultural Revitalization and Communication Model, which redefines the role of Japanese gardens within contemporary hotel management. Recognized as one of Japan’s most prestigious design awards, the accolade highlights the hotel’s long-term commitment to preserving cultural heritage while connecting people, nature, and tradition.

    Created in the Meiji era by statesman Aritomo Yamagata and later inherited by the Fujita family, the garden remains a symbol of living heritage. Through this award-winning model, the hotel has positioned the garden as a space for research, community, and training-an approach that stood out among this year’s entries.

    The initiative began in 2020, when the hotel chose to expand, rather than reduce, investment in its garden, introducing experiential programs such as Tokyo Sea of Clouds. The creation of a dedicated Garden Management Department provides training for emerging gardeners, while collaborations with Ueyakato Landscape and Yushien Garden support specialized education and cultural continuity.

    “At a time when many historic gardens in Japan struggle to survive financially, this project is pioneering in placing the garden itself at the center of its vision,” the judges noted.

    “During COVID, when the hospitality industry was driven toward efficiency, the decision to invest in a non-revenue-generating garden-and to reform organizational awareness-was bold and forward-looking.

    Rather than treating the garden as a backdrop, the project positions it as a foundation for experience and research, recognizing that a garden is a living, ever-evolving entity and finding cultural value in that dynamism.

    Furthermore, in addressing the contemporary challenges facing Japanese gardens, such as the shortage of skilled gardeners and successors, the project redefines the garden not merely as a tourism asset, but as a place for training and the preservation of traditional techniques, which makes it all the more valuable.”

    Earlier this year, the garden was also certified by Japan’s Ministry of the Environment as a Natural Symbiosis Site under the Regional Biodiversity Enhancement Act, recognizing its efforts in biodiversity and eco-conscious management.

This region is famous for its intense prehistoric and modern tectonic and volcanic activities, including volcanic eruptions, active geysers and more.

    The uniqueness of this region gave rise to the Hell’s Gate National Park, whose name is very unique. At the moment, the origin of the name ‘Hell’s Gate’ is contentious, with some people saying that it was named by the local Maasai tribe, whose tribesmen were buried alive when the nearby Mt.Longonot erupted. Local legends say that after the tragedy, the tribe called the area ‘Enee Meneng’a’, which was later translated by settlers as ‘Hell’. 

    Another school of thought says the name comes from two late 19th-century explorers, Fischers and Thompson, who, when they saw the narrow cliffs in the geyser- and gorge-filled park, felt they looked like a gateway to Hell. 

    Regardless of the name’s origin, Hell’s Gate is considered a park unlike others in Kenya for its beautiful landscape, geysers, cliffs, and geothermal steam rising from cracks in the ground. Making it a beautiful place to visit. 

    Did you know: Hell’s Gate National Park inspired the imagery for The Lion King, especially Pride Rock. No Lions can currently be found in the park, though.

    Before going to Hell’s Gate National Park, there are a few things to tick off your checklist. These include;

    • Wear comfortable shoes and clothing: As you are going to a park, it is highly recommended that you wear comfortable clothing. Ensure you have shoes with a good grip, preferably hiking shoes, a hat, and comfortable shorts or pants. Since the region is a bit warmer than other places in the country, remember to carry your sunscreen and a light jacket for your trip back.
    • Check the season: Hell’s Gate is known for its prehistoric river, which has carved out a beautiful gorge. However, this gorge can also be a dangerous hike during the rainy season and it can experience flash floods that have caused injury and death in the past.     Getting to Hell’s Gate National Park

    • Hell’s Gate is approximately 120 km away from Nairobi, and 102 km from Nakuru. The drive will take you a maximum of 3 hours, if you include stops. 
    • If you are coming from Nairobi, your tour provider will drive you to Naivasha town. The drive is picturesque and includes stunning views of the Great Rift Valley, a deep crevice in the earth’s surface caused by faulting which runs from Mozambique to Syria in Asia. During the drive, you will also see shops selling souvenirs at various viewpoints, which allow you to shop while taking in the beauty of the Rift Valley. 
    • You will see various towns, including Limuru, and observe the different activities that occur along the way, including farming and the vending of products. 1.5 hours later, you will get to Naivasha town, famously known as the ‘Happy Valley’ during colonial times. The town is also home to the major flower farms in Kenya and is one of the main flower suppliers in the world. 
    • Once you reach the town, you will keep going until you reach your final destination, Hell’s Gate National Park.

    Things to Do at Hell’s Gate National Park

    With its dramatic scenery, towering cliffs, gorges, and geothermal features, the park offers a range of thrilling activities for adventure seekers and nature lovers alike.

    Cycling Safari
