    Traditionally, old age was always a mark of wisdom, or at least useful experience. Something has changed, though, and, if you are over 50, chances are that your career is considered done in many Western countries. Add to this the systemic shift of AI, and you get a pretty grim picture.

    It’s 3 AM somewhere on the northern shore of Lake Balaton. I’m at kilometer 170 of a 222-kilometer race, and I’m not sure I can finish. The summer rain has stopped and the road is cutting through wet cornfields. I have the eerie feeling that my steps don’t make any sound: my soles are raw—blisters the size of my fist, already burst. Every single step sends brutal pain up my spine.

    I stopped running a few hours ago. Now I’m walking, alternating 30-second running sessions with 5-minute walking sessions, anchoring myself to the reflective vest of the runner ahead of me – disappearing and reappearing in the dark fog. The math is unforgiving: 52 kilometers left, less than eight hours until the cutoff. Normally, I would finish this with a smile on my face (even including a nap break, honestly), but now, after 170 painful kilometers and 24 hours of continuous effort, my body screams to sit down. My mind wants a reason to continue.

    So I made a deal with myself. Don’t think about the finish line. Just get to the next aid station. It’s 8 kilometers away. That’s all. Crawl if you have to, but keep moving until you see the lights. Then, when you get there, make the same deal again.

    That night in Hungary taught me something no business workshop ever could: keep moving until the next aid station. Not forever—just until the next checkpoint. This is the mindset that gets you through uncertain years, difficult projects, the long middle stretches when nobody’s clapping. AI can work faster than you, that’s true. But it can’t decide when to push through and when to rest. It doesn’t know that most people quit in the third hour after midnight – and the ones who don’t are the ones who finish.


    I sold my first company at 38. I thought I was clever – and for a while, I was. But then I watched almost all of the money disappear into bad timing and lessons I hadn’t learned yet.     Now, before you sell yourself short, creativity lies within all of us. And the more you understand it, the more you stop waiting for inspiration and start generating it.

    What is creative intelligence?

    The “creative intelligence” definition, in a nutshell, is your ability to imagine new ideas, make connections, and solve problems in your own original way. According to psychologist Robert Sternberg, it helps you think beyond the usual answers so you can shape moments, choices, and projects with more freedom and confidence.

    He also connects this intelligence to what he calls experiential intelligence. This is your ability to learn from the situations you live through and turn those lessons into fresh ideas or inventive solutions.

    Now, if you’re familiar with Brooklyn Nine-Nine, you know that the annual Halloween heists turn the whole squad into a pack of schemers trying to outthink everyone else. For instance, season five’s “HalloVeen” has Jake designing the entire heist as a secret setup for his proposal. He uses clues, misdirection, and playful strategy to build a moment Amy Santiago never sees coming.

    That’s the thing with those who have creative confidence. They’re risk-takers, and they’re willing to be different and engage in divergent thinking (which is essentially the ability to think outside the box). Because of this “dare to fail attitude,” they’re often impulsive and change their minds.

    One way to assess this type of intelligence is to ask an open-ended hypothetical question about an unusual problem that doesn’t really have a right or wrong answer. For example, here’s an interview question that was asked by Google: “How much would you charge to wash all the windows in Seattle?

    The intention is to see how the candidate approaches the problem and what type of intelligence they demonstrate the most. (Yeah, good luck with that one.)

    Understanding Sternberg’s triarchic theory of intelligence

    Sternberg’s theory is just one of four major theories of intelligence. As opposed to the others that focus more on behavior, the triarchic theory of intelligence accounts for a more cognitive approach.

    He created this theory to show that intelligence is more than grades or test scores. He wanted people to understand that your mind works in different ways, and each way affects how you learn, make choices, and deal with life.

    He also believed we forget about some of our most useful thinking skills because we focus too much on the ones that fit school or testing. His theory brings the focus back to the skills that help you come up with ideas, handle new situations, and respond to real life.

    It shows that your thinking is not one single thing. Rather, it’s a mix of abilities that work together.

    The thing is, this model helps you understand your strengths. It explains why some tasks feel easy and others drain you.

    And once you see how these different thinking styles show up in your life, you get a better sense of how your mind solves problems, what sparks your ideas, and where you can grow next.

    Analytical, creative, and practical intelligence explained

    Sternberg’s triarchic theory of intelligence places our thinking abilities into three categories:

    • Analytical (componential). Often called “book smarts,” this intelligence helps you recognize patterns, apply logic, and solve structured problems. If you take Brooklyn Nine-Nine as an example, this has Amy written all over it.

    Here’s the thing you need to know about creative intelligence: it is no magical gift. It is a mental skill that grows the more you use it.

    That’s what psychologist J. P. Guilford discovered. He found that creativity grows when you can come up with lots of ideas, switch directions easily, think of unusual possibilities, and stay open to trying things that might feel a little bold.

    Let’s take Mindvalley’s trainer and social media expert, John Lee, for instance. When he teaches his six-year-old daughter to create merch with AI, she throws out idea after idea with zero hesitation, from “a castle on a cloud” to “a unicorn jumping on a bed” to “a crazy orange.”

    She doesn’t overthink anything. She just plays, shifts directions fast, and tries whatever pops into her mind, which is exactly the kind of bold, flexible thinking Guilford was talking about.

    Now, another psychologist, Ellis Paul Torrance, built on Guilford’s work and created tests that measured things like imagination, storytelling, and innovative problem‑solving.     More modern research shows that your brain actually uses two different systems when you’re being creative. One helps your mind wander and come up with ideas, like the ones that show up in the shower. The other helps you focus and choose which ideas to use once you sit down to work.

    When you can move between these two states easily, your ideas feel natural and still lead somewhere. That’s when you get those “ah-ha” moments, when an idea suddenly clicks. Your brain links pieces you didn’t realize were connected, and creative intelligence helps you spot patterns that were right in front of you the whole time.

    This type of thinking manifests itself in all sorts of ways. Often, it’s associated with the arts, including paintings, graphic design, music, film, etc.

    More often than not, if your perception is on the negative side, you tend to believe the myth that you’re either born with creativity or you’re not.

    However, it’s something that’s built, not born. “You discover [creativity]; you develop it through work,” says Jim.

    Jim’s tip:I am…” are the two most powerful words in the English language. Whatever you put after that statement will be your life’s focus. 

    So be aware of your self-talk and limiting beliefs. And those “I am…” statements? It might be time to tell yourself, “I am creative.”

    2. Ask

    Ask, and you shall receive, as the saying goes. And questions can be quite beneficial.

    According to Jim, asking questions helps your mind focus on something brand new. Behavioral science research even shows that it naturally improves emotional intelligence, spurs learning, fuels innovation, improves performance, and builds rapport, just to name a few.

    Jim’s tip: Ask questions like:

    • How can I be more creative?
    • What am I not paying attention to?
    • What elements can I connect to create something that wasn’t there before?

    When you ask these types of questions, they’re going to lead to brand-new answers in creativity.

    3. Goals

    The goal of setting goals is twofold: 1) a long-term vision and 2) short-term motivation. 

    It helps trigger new behaviors, align your focus, and sustain that momentum. What’s more, it gives your brain clarity. And, as Jim points out, clarity becomes power. 

    So what are your goals for being more creative? Make them specific so that when you set your goals, you’re motivated to achieve them.

    Jim’s tip: Write down your creative goals. By doing so, you take something that’s invisible and make it visible. Then transfer it to a vision board, which helps your subconscious mind focus on the goals and the steps you need to take to achieve them. 

    As you achieve each goal, drop a little note in a gratitude jar so you can feel the satisfaction of a job well done.

    4. Imagination

    Knowledge is what is, but imagination is what could be,” says Jim. You could say that it’s a magnet for making things happen.

    It’s a powerful way to give your brain a boost and help you look at the world from a whole new perspective.

    Jim’s tip: Use your question-asking abilities as a way to rouse your imagination. 

    For example, think of a lemon. What does it smell like? Take a lick—how does it taste? How would the two change if you were to put sugar on it? Or salt?

    Once you access your imagination, use your knowledge to create new answers.

    5. Care

    Creativity comes from your limitless mind, so taking care of it is super important.

    There’s no need to make a drastic change when it comes to your brain’s well-being. Start off with simple habits and, as the old adage goes, take it one step at a time.

    Jim’s tip: If your body energy levels are low, your creative energy levels are going to be as well. So get good sleep, eat nutritious food, and exercise.

    And in Jim’s famous words, “When the body moves, the brain grooves.”

    6. Repurpose

    Your mind grows sharper when you learn to see more than one path inside a single idea. Instead of treating a thought as a fixed object, you start noticing how it can shift, expand, or take on a different shape.

    This is exactly what John teaches in his Mindvalley program.     • Personal Brands & Professionals: YourName.com is the gold standard, but if it’s taken, you can get creative with .me or use a professional extension like .consulting or .law.

    The Brainstorming Process

    Now for the fun part. Start by looking at your competitors and thinking about your unique value. What words describe your brand?

    Try these creative techniques:

    • Word association: Write down words related to your business and see what sparks.
    • Combine words: Create a new word by blending two others.

    In 1925, a rookie copywriter named John Caples had to sell something hard to sell:

    A mail-order piano course.

    He was barely a year into his job at the agency Ruthrauff & Ryan.

    The U.S. School of Music had knocked on their door.

    They wanted a campaign for their new self-study instrument courses.

    Caples needed an angle for his copy.

    Should he focus on how easy it makes learning?

    Should he focus on the lower price compared to hiring a tutor?

    Both were true.

    But none of it felt compelling.

    Caples asked himself:

    Why would someone who isn’t a professional musician want to learn piano in the first place?

    What would they really want to achieve?

    And he realized the answer had nothing to do with music.

    People who wanted to learn to play an instrument were after admiration.

    They wanted to walk into a room, sit at the piano, and watch people’s jaws drop.

    They wanted a moment in the spotlight.

    If they were going to buy that course, this was the main reason.

    Everything else was secondary.

    So Caples decided to base his copy on this emotion.

    He created a scene where people underestimated the main character, a guy who had never played piano before.

    “Can he really play?”

    But then he plays like a pianist.

    Everybody is shocked.

    They surround our guy:

    “Where did you learn?”

    “How long have you studied?”

    “Who was your teacher?”

    Only then does Caples start explaining the functional details of the mail-order course.

    And as the finishing touch, he wrote one of the most famous headlines in advertising history:

    “They Laughed When I Sat Down at the Piano—But When I Started to Play!”

    The ad was so effective, the U.S. School of Music ran it for decades.

    It made Caples a copywriting legend.

    And that ad is still studied by copywriters today.

    Why?

    Because Caples understood one thing:

    Functional outcomes are only vehicles to achieve underlying emotional outcomes.

    If you sell the emotion, you sell the product.

    Understanding what your clients actually buy

    You know the jokes about big consulting firms.

    “McKinsey sells overpriced PowerPoints.”

    Totally justified.

    Their quality dropped over the years while they kept charging outrageous fees.

    But the jokes miss one point.

    If these big firms have average quality, why do buyers still pay millions to them?

    Are they naive?

    Of course not.

    They are actually smart.

    But it’s like Caples’s realization with piano course buyers.

    Their reasons are more emotional than functional.

    Sometimes they want the least risky option.

    Sometimes they want to use a known firm’s credibility to gain more power internally.

    We’ve talked about why B2B buyers act even more on emotions than consumers.

    But despite this, most consulting firms never try to understand what their buyers actually try to achieve.

    Hence they base their messaging purely on functional outcomes.

    Increase revenue this much.

    Decrease costs that much.

    Sure, these matter.

    But they are only vehicles for the underlying emotional outcomes.

    So ignoring them in your messaging makes it bland.

    It stays at the surface level.

    To make your messaging connect, you have to understand what they actually want to achieve.

    How?

    Well, by seeing the world from their perspective.

    As we talked about in 3C Analysis, we use the Trigger-to-Outcome Journey in our framework to understand why clients really buy.

    Various sources feed into this analysis.

    Like past engagements, client interviews, and sales meeting transcripts.

    We identify the key themes and list them under each part of the journey.

    Let me show you an example.

    Imagine a cybersecurity consulting firm called ACME.

    After analyzing everything, let’s say we’ve mapped out these points for ACME’s buyers:

    You can see it here in full resolution. We end up with 10-20 points for each, but simplifying here to explain the thought process.

    Great.

    This gives an overall view of what ACME’s clients are trying to achieve.

    Now, how do we use this analysis for positioning and messaging?

    In three ways:

    1. Pair it with segmentation

    Different customer segments care about different problems and outcomes.

    Let’s say ACME has some enterprise clients and some mid-market ones.

    The enterprise segment might care more about reducing personal risk if a breach happens.

    While the mid-market segment might care about being perceived as a serious partner to win deals, hence ambition.

    So if we position ACME for the mid-market, we have to align messaging to their needs.

    Messaging based on reducing risk wouldn’t work well.

    Because these buyers care about something else.

    2. Pair it with Company and Competition Analysis

    Customer analysis is only one of the 3Cs we analyze.

    The other Cs are Company and Competition.

    Customer analysis tells you what matters.

    Company analysis tells you where you have an edge.

    Competition analysis tells you what others ignore.

    The combination of all three allows us to make an informed positioning decision in our workshops.

    Continuing with our example:

    • Competition: We notice that the majority of ACME’s competitors focus on the risk reduction angle. Nobody leads with cybersecurity as a growth lever, focusing on ambition. So there’s a gap.
    • Company: ACME’s experience, case studies, and proprietary frameworks (hence strengths) are aligned to focus on the mid-market segment and their needs. Meanwhile, ACME’s lean team (weakness) makes it hard to deal with long sales cycles in the enterprise segment.

    3. Make decisions

    During the analysis stage, we list as many points as possible without making assumptions.

    So we end up with dozens of “problems” and “outcomes.”

    But then we have to prioritize the most important ones.

    This part is tricky.

    Because this is where we make decisions, hence sacrifices.

    Saying “yes” to a few problems means saying “no” to many others.

    But it’s vital to have effective messaging.

    The decisions here shape everything.

    Website copy, content, ads…

    If we were to position ACME for the enterprise segment, focusing on risk reduction:

    • We’d specialize in capabilities around risk mitigation.
    • Our website would say: “Know exactly where you’re exposed, before the board asks.”
    • Our content and ads would be around: “What every CTO should know before their next board meeting”, “The 5 questions your board will ask after a competitor gets hacked”, etc.

    If we were to position ACME for the mid-market segment, focusing on ambition:

    • We’d specialize in capabilities around increasing our clients’ win rate using cybersecurity.
    • Our website would say: “Turn cybersecurity into your competitive advantage.”
    • Our content and ads would be around: “Why enterprise buyers won’t sign until they see your SOC 2”, “How to stop losing deals on cybersecurity”, etc.

    You see how everything changes.

    The same firm.

    But totally different value propositions.

    These decisions always lead to interesting discussions between executives during our workshops.

    Sometimes it becomes like a therapy session.

    Everybody shares their opinions about what the firm should stand for.

    But in the end, decisions are made.

    So everybody is aligned around the value the firm creates for clients.

    The moral of the story?

    Caples’s ad worked because he understood why people actually buy.

    The same applies to your firm.

    Yes, you deliver functional outcomes for your clients.

    But so do your competitors.

    To stand out, own certain emotional outcomes.

    And communicate them better.

    Caples sold admiration, not piano lessons.

    The question is:

Maybe you’ve got a big project looming, a new habit you want to build, or even just your annual tax prep, and for some reason, you just can’t seem to get started. It’s like there’s an invisible wall between you and action.

    I’ve been there more times than I can count. Just recently, I had all my tax documents neatly organized, a clear plan in my task manager, and a dedicated block of time set aside. Clarity wasn’t the issue. Yet, when the time came, I found myself doing everything but my taxes. Sound familiar? This isn’t about a lack of desire or even a lack of knowledge. It’s about being stuck. And the good news is, there are simple, actionable strategies to break free.

    This article will explore five powerful ways to get unstuck, regain momentum, and move forward with your goals, whether they’re big projects or small daily habits. These are tactics my co-host Brooks and I have personally used and seen work wonders for countless others.

    1. Schedule Your Habits (and Make Them Non-Negotiable)

    One of the most common reasons we get stuck is simply hoping things will happen. We have good intentions, but intentions rarely translate into action without a plan. The first step to getting unstuck is to treat your habits and important tasks like non-negotiable appointments. Put them on your calendar, just like you would a meeting with a client or a doctor’s appointment.

    The more specific you are, the better. Instead of “I want to read more,” try “I will read for 20 minutes at [6:00] AM every weekday.” This level of detail removes ambiguity and makes it much harder to procrastinate. When you’re doing your weekly planning, actively look for those projects you’ve been avoiding or habits you’ve been inconsistent with, and intentionally block out time for them.

    Now, I know what some of you are thinking: “I schedule things all the time, but then I just blow past them.” And you’re not alone. For many, if a calendar event doesn’t involve another person, it feels optional. If that’s you, consider focusing on the outcome rather than just the schedule. For example, instead of “read 20 pages at [6:00] AM,” your goal might be “read 20 pages today.” Then, design your environment to constantly remind you. Write it on a whiteboard, set a phone background, or use system reminders. The key is to create cues that make it almost impossible to forget.

    Another powerful technique is habit stacking. This involves tying a new habit to an existing one. When I was trying to rebuild my reading habit, I linked it to my morning exercise. As soon as I walked back in the door from my walk or gym session, I went straight to reading. By connecting a desired action to something you already do consistently, you leverage existing routines to build new ones. It’s about making the path of least resistance the path to your goals.

    2. Make It Ridiculously Easy to Start

    Think about the last time you really struggled to get something done. What was the biggest hurdle? Often, it’s not the task itself, but the sheer effort required to start. The second strategy is to reduce that activation energy to almost zero. Break down your tasks into the smallest possible steps, even smaller than you think you need to.

    Let’s say you want to write a book. Instead of aiming for 1,500 words a day and feeling defeated when you don’t hit it, shrink that goal. Try for 500 words, or 200, or even just 100. The point is to create a win, to get the momentum going. Once you’re in the groove, you can always expand. The goal here is to “grease the skids” and make forward movement feel effortless.

    I experienced this firsthand with listening to audiobooks and podcasts. During the pandemic, my consumption dropped significantly. Why? Because my habit was anchored to walking outside. When I stopped going out as much, the habit crumbled. I realized I didn’t have to be walking to listen. Then, I thought about another friction point: untangling earbud cords. It sounds trivial, but that small annoyance was enough to stop me. The moment I switched to AirPods, my audiobook consumption skyrocketed. Removing that tiny bit of friction made all the difference.

    What are the hidden friction points in your own life? Is it a messy desk that makes it hard to focus? A cluttered digital desktop that overwhelms you?     Often, we get stuck because our attention is fragmented. We’re pulled in too many directions, and nothing gets the dedicated focus it needs to gain traction. When you’re planning your day, clear the decks for a specific block of time to concentrate solely on that one critical task. If you have too much going on, you’ll find yourself perpetually stuck.

    For me, writing projects can be a huge source of inertia. I love writing, but getting started is often the hardest part. My solution? I use a writing app in full-screen mode. No other tabs, no other applications, just the blank page. If I need reference material, it goes on a separate monitor or my iPad. This creates an environment where my brain has no choice but to focus on the task at hand.

    This concept extends to your entire workspace. We talk a lot about “clearing to neutral” at Asian Efficiency. We often blow past appointments we make with ourselves because there’s no external consequence. But when someone else is relying on you, the dynamic shifts.

    Think about it: if you’ve committed to working out with a friend at [4:00] PM, you’re far less likely to skip it, even if you don’t feel like it. You don’t want to be the person who bails. This isn’t about guilt; it’s about leveraging our natural inclination to follow through on commitments to others. This is why communities like our Dojo are so popular. Conversely, a well-organized, intentional environment can significantly boost your productivity. I learned this lesson early in my career when my boss insisted we all get second monitors. I was skeptical, thinking it would just take up more desk space. But that one change was a complete game-changer, massively increasing my productivity. It showed me the profound impact of environment design.

    This principle extends beyond just your desk. David Allen, the creator of Getting Things Done, often starts with decluttering a client’s office, even before diving into their inbox. Why? Because a clear workspace directly impacts your ability to focus. If your desk is covered in papers, sticky notes, and random items, your brain is constantly processing that visual clutter, making deep work challenging.

    I make it a point to clear my desk at the end of every workday. It’s part of my “clear to neutral” routine.
