Today marks the 45th Anniversary of the Engagement of the Engagement of the Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer in 1981, which also marks the 45th Anniversary of the debut of Princess Diana’s iconic Sapphire Engagement Ring, which was given three decades later to her daughter-in-law, the now Princess of Wales!

Composed of a large, faceted oval Ceylon sapphire surrounded by fourteen round diamonds, this ring was made by Garrard and was the largest and most expensive of the selection of rings presented to Lady Diana Spencer following her private engagement. Since the ring was a stock item, it is known that it was bought for £28,500.

The first time the ring was publicly seen was at the engagement photocall of the Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer outside Buckingham Palace in February 1981, when Lady Diana showed of her engagement ring to the world’s media.

The Princess of Wales wore the Sapphire Ring for the duration of her marriage, and even during the four years of her separation, out of affection for her sons. In September 1995, her first engagement after the divorce was finalized, the Princess still wore her engagement ring on the day Prince William started school at Eton. Two days later, the ring was off, and after her untimely death in 1997, it passed to her sons.

In 2010, Prince William proposed to his longtime girlfriend, Catherine Middleton, with his mother’s engagement ring, after carrying it in his backpack around Kenya. At the engagement photocall a few weeks later, he said:

It’s very special to me. As Kate’s very special to me now, it was right to put the two together. It was my way of making sure my mother didn’t miss out on today, and the excitement, and the fact that we’re going to spend the rest of our lives together.”

The Duchess of Cambridge and now Princess of Wales has worn her late mother-in-law’s engagement ring from that day onward, with the exception of a period while she was undergoing cancer treatment, and will no doubt continue to do so for years to come!

“Whatever ‘in love’ means”, the Prince made an infamous statement after the announcement of his engagement to Lady Diana

In a BBC interview, the Prince said he was “delighted and frankly amazed that Diana is prepared to take me on”.

Looking shyly up through her long blond fringe and giggling occasionally, Lady Diana said she too was “delighted and thrilled, blissfully happy”.

Asked how she would cope with a dramatic change to her life she said: “With Prince Charles beside me I cannot go wrong.”

Designed as chains of oval and lozenge-shaped clusters suspended from quatrefoil surmounts, set with 8 cushion-shaped and round rubies and numerous cushion-shaped diamonds, circa 1835, these magnificent Earrings were part of a much larger Parure which included a Tiara, a Necklace, and a Brooch.

In 1843, King Louis Philippe of the French gave the Ruby and Diamond Parure as a wedding gift to his youngest daughter, Princess Clementine d’Orlèans who was married Prince August of Saxe-Coberg and Gotha. The Parure passed to her eldest daughter Princess Clotilde, and then to her daughter, Archduchess Margarethe Klementine of Austria, Princess von Thurn und Taxis.

By tradition they were given by King Louis Philippe (1773-1850) to his youngest daughter Princess Clementine d’Orlèans (1817-1907) who was married at St. Cloud in 1843 to August, Prince of Saxe-Coberg and Gotha, Duke in Saxony (1818-1881). They passed from her to her eldest daughter Princess Clotilde (1846-1927) who in 1864 married Archduke Joseph of Austria (1833-1905). Their daughter, the Archduchess Margarete-Clementine-Marie of Austria (1870-1955) who became the wife of Prince Albert von Thurn und Taxis (1867-1952) on July 15 1890, inherited the earrings.

In 1982, Princess Clémentine’s Ruby and Diamond Parure, which included the Tiara, a Necklace, these pair of Earrings, and a Brooch, came up for Auction at Christie’s in Geneva. There, the Earrings were acquired by the Prince of Thurn und Taxis, who was a grandson of Archduchess Margarethe Klementine, for his wife, Princess Gloria.

These earrings were purchased by Fürst Johannes for his wife Gloria at Christie’s in Geneva, May 1982, lot 586.

Following a portrait soon after the Earrings were acquired, Princess Gloria notably wore Princess Clémentine’s Ruby and Diamond Earrings with the Thurn und Taxis Ruby Tiara and Ruby and Diamond Necklace for a Performance of La Traviata at the Paris Opera House in 1985.

Two years later, the Ruby and Diamond Earrings and the Ruby and Diamond Necklace were worn by Princess Gloria for a Gala during the Prince and Princess of Wales’ visit to Germany in 1987.

Into the late 1980s, Princess Gloria wore the Ruby Earrings with the Thurn und Taxis Ruby Tiara for a series of Balls and Galas, as well as numerous appearances with the Ruby and Diamond Necklace.

After the Prince’s death in 1990, Princess Clémentine’s Ruby and Diamond Earrings were among various family heirlooms, which included Empress Eugénie’s Pearl Tiara, the Thurn und Taxis Empire Tiara, the Hesse Emerald Brooch, and Princess Olga’s Emerald Earrings sold off to bolster family finances at Sotheby’s in 1992. The Earrings came up for Auction again at Sotheby’s in 2008 and remain in a private collection.

The Prince and Princess of Wales attended the British Academy of Film and Television Awards (BAFTA) Ceremony at the Royal Festival Hall in London on the evening of February 22nd, attending for the first time since 2023.

The Prince and Princess of Wales were welcomed on the red carpet upon arrival for the British Academy of Film and Television Awards (BAFTA) at the Royal Festival Hall and met officials and stars before taking their seats in the auditorium to watch the Awards Ceremony, during which the Prince will present an award. The Prince has been President of the British Academy of Film and Television since 2010.
