Heartbreaking images of five emu chicks ran over and left for dead on a remote road in a national park have sparked community outrage over what’s been described ‘deliberate act of cruelty’.

A quest for answers is underway after the ‘massacred’ chicks were discovered in various states of trauma with horrific injuries across a dead-end road in Hawke National Park at Yeagarup in Western Australia’s southwest on Saturday.

Volunteer wildlife carer Leonie Burt was called out to the distressing scene, and by the time she arrived, two chicks were already dead.

Three others barely clinging to life were rushed to Manjimup Veterinary Clinic but were in such a bad state there was no other choice but to euthanise them.

One had a broken spine, another with a broken leg, while a third with a broken pelvis and smashed leg fought hard to stay alive but eventually succumbed to his injuries.

An emotional Ms Burt is still traumatised by the horrifying discovery and believed it was a deliberate act of animal cruelty.

‘The way the birds were laid out, they were scattered and quite some distance apart,’ she told Seven News.

‘If five birds had been walking in a row in the middle of the road, that’s where they would have fallen but they were everywhere.’

‘It was the most horrific scene I’ve come across and these babies were looking at me like ‘what have we done to deserve this.”

As the shocking act took place in a national park, the culprits responsible could face criminal charges if they’re tracked down.

‘Why would someone run over five emu chicks and not stop and ask for help? Unfortunately there was no sign of Mum and the bush is too thick to penetrate,’ Amaris Wildlife Rehabilitation Sanctuary shared posted.

The sanctuary later added there was no sign of the chicks’ dad, their primary carer.

The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions is investigating.

‘They are out looking for Daddy Emu and moving the deceased ones into the bush. Also they have a camera set up and will be checking on all vehicles that travelled through the area. This was in a National park,’ the sanctuary added.

Members of the local Pemberton community have pitched in towards a $1500 reward for anyone with information about who’s responsible.

‘The community is so strong and they can see this is an act of cruelty and it’s not to be tolerated,’ Ms Burt said.

‘These people need to be prosecuted.’

After the brutal murders of University of Idaho students Kaylee Goncalves, Maddie Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin on November 13, police discovered Kaylee’s dog, Murphy, closed inside her third-floor bedroom. Murphy was unharmed. Since his mom’s murder, Murphy has been living with Goncalves’ ex-boyfriend Jack Ducoeur.

And now, Ducoeur has created an Instagram for one-year-old Murphy, where he can share his life and remember Kaylee with others. The account went live earlier this week and has already gathered more than 66k followers. Comments have been flooded with love and support for both Murphy and Ducoeur.

Mourning His Mom

Goncalves and ex-boyfriend Ducoeur adopted Goldendoodle Murphy during their five-year relationship. After Goncalves and Jack’s breakup, Murphy split time between his parents. The Daily Mail reported the couples’ friends and family members believed the two would reunite.

Through his new Instagram account, Murphy has already shared memories of Kaylee, the first post showing him watching the sunset over water with the touching caption, “Missing my mom every day, but trying to live my best life. I got to admire her beauty in the sky this evening.”

Another post reveals one of Kaylee’s favorite shots of Murphy, the darling dog sharing, “My mom loved this one.”

Ducoeur was cleared of suspicion by police but still faced harassment and false accusations until police arrested Bryan Kohberger in late December. The accusations that he harmed Kaylee have left him “heartbroken.” Brooke Miller, DuCoeur’s aunt, told the New York Post, “He’s not only lost the love of his life, and what we all thought and he probably thought as well, would be his future wife — you know, get married and have kids and all of that.”

Could an Animal Hair Help the Case?

After the search of murder suspect Bryan Kohberger’s apartment, court documents revealed investigators collected eight strands of hair from the suspect’s residence. Among those, one was a “possible” animal hair. Investigators have not confirmed whether any of those hairs belonged to the victims or if the animal hair belonged to Murphy.

Kohberger is currently being held without bail, but his attorney reports his client plans on pleading not guilty to the charges against him.

The results are in, and it’s official! According to Guinness World Records, the world’s oldest dog is now Spike, a 23-year-old Chihuahua. At the end of 2022, Gino, a 22-year old mixed-breed, was crowned the oldest. But Spike has now taken the title. 

Spike may be small, but he has a lot of attitude, and he’s living his long life on a farm in rural Ohio.

Ten years ago, Rita first laid eyes on the tiny little guy while he was spending time in the parking lot of a grocery store. The employees there had been sneaking him scraps for around three days, but he still wasn’t in the best shape. 

“He had been shaved up his back, had blood stains around his neck from a chain or rope, and looked pretty rough,” Rita said.

She has considered the pint-sized-pooch a member of her family since the day she opened-up the door of her car, and he hopped right inside. The pair have been inseparable since, and they have lived a lovely life together. 

“When we left the store and entered the parking lot, he followed. We opened the car door to put our grandson in his car seat, and Spike jumped right in and sat on the seat, as if he knew where we was going. It was meant to be,” she said.

When asked what she believes has been the key to her canine’s longevity, Rita says she thinks it’s his daily routine. Spike starts his day around 7:00 am. Sometimes he skips breakfast for a bit, and other times he wakes-up with an appetite. On summer weekends, he will take a walk with his mom in their hometown, and then once they return home, Spike settles in for a nap on the porch.

On other days, Spike likes to go straight to visiting with the animals (cows, horses, and cats) in the barn. When he’s feeling particularly feisty, he likes to chase a cat or two. 

Spike also loves his Saturday evening baths and occasionally, he indulges in braunschweiger with cheese for dinner. Speaking of cheese, Spike once loved the taste of cheesy chips.

“In his early years, he loved Doritos. He liked them crunched up and would eat the cheese Doritos every time we had them,” she says.

Rita says that Spike’s healthy diet, room to roam, daily exercise, and unlimited love and attention are what have contributed the most to his long life. The tiny pup may stand only nine inches tall, but he sure does take-up an enormous amount of room in her heart.

From the ring-tailed lemur to the aye-aye, a nocturnal primate, more than 20m years of unique evolutionary history could be wiped from the planet if nothing is done to stop Madagascar’s threatened mammals going extinct, according to a new study.

It would already take 3m years to recover the diversity of mammal species driven to extinction since humans settled on the island 2,500 years ago. But much more is at risk in the coming decades: if threatened mammal species on Madagascar go extinct, life forms created by 23m years of evolutionary history will be destroyed.

“Our results suggest that an extinction wave with deep evolutionary impact is imminent on Madagascar unless immediate conservation actions are taken,” researchers wrote in a paper published in Nature Communications. Madagascar is one of the planet’s biodiversity hotspots with 90% of its species found nowhere else on the planet, yet more than half of its mammal species are threatened with extinction.

So much is on the line because the island is relatively pristine and is home to wildlife that has evolved nowhere else, having split from greater India around 88m years ago. It is the world’s fourth largest island, about the size of Ukraine, and much of its diversity has been built on species coming from Africa and then diversifying over millions of years.

“It’s about putting things in perspective – we’re losing unique species traits that will probably never evolve again,” said lead researcher Dr Luis Valente from the Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden, the Netherlands, and the University of Groningen. “Every species is valuable in its own right; it’s like destroying a piece of art, so what is happening is very shocking.” His team collaborated with researchers from the US and the conservation organisation Association Vahatra in Madagascar.

The island is particularly known for its ring-tailed lemurs, members of a unique lineage of primates found nowhere else. Other well-known inhabitants include the fossa, a carnivorous cat-like animal, and the panther chameleon, as well as a vast array of unique butterflies, orchids, baobabs and many other species.

Biologists and palaeontologists created a dataset that showed all the mammal species currently present on the island, those that were alive when humans arrived, and those known only from fossil records. Of the 249 species identified, 30 are extinct. More than 120 of the 219 mammal species alive today on the island are threatened with extinction.

Lost species can never return, and so the study looked at how long it would take to recover the same levels of biodiversity through new species colonising and evolving on the island.

Valente said: “Lots of these species could be going extinct in the next 10 or 20 years – they cannot wait much longer. You can quickly reach a point where a species isn’t viable any more. The main message is that biodiversity is not going to recover quickly. Even the places we think are pristine and really untouched can be pushed to the point of collapse quite quickly.”

The loss of mammals would have significant impacts on other species of plant and insect that depend on them. Valente said: “It’s a cascading effect – losing these mammals would likely cause a collapse of the ecosystem more broadly. In total, it is likely to be more than 23m years at stake.”

The main threats are human-induced habitat destruction, climate change and hunting. During the past decade, the number of mammal species threatened with extinction on Madagascar has more than doubled, from 56 in 2010 to 128 in 2021. Conservation programmes are needed to create livelihoods for local people, to stop forests being converted into farmland, and to limit the exploitation of resources such as hardwood trees and animals used for bushmeat, the paper’s authors said.

Yadvinder Malhi, a professor of ecosystem science at the University of Oxford, who was not involved in the research, said: “This fascinating study shows it would take millions of years for natural processes to rebuild the levels of biodiversity already lost, and tens of millions of years if currently threatened species are also lost. While this study looked at Madagascar, similar analyses could be done for other islands and continents, and I think would tell a similar story.

He added: “The impact humanity has already had on Earth’s biodiversity will last for millions of years, but the next few decades are hugely important for avoiding large-scale extinction that could have much deeper and longer consequences.”

Over the last couple of years good news has sometimes felt hard to come by, whilst reading through South Africa’s Good News Blog, I came across this beautiful article written by Khaya Thwala, and it brought me so much joy. The 1990’s was the spark that ignited Martha’s deep connection with South Africa, when she visited to experience the Madiba Magic that was swirling around the world. From the moment Martha landed in Johannesburg she describes that she was “hooked”.

“Madiba magic is in everyone”

After visiting South Africa, and staying at Londolozi, she had this to say:

“There is something so magical and heart-filling about South Africa. On my first trip, I expected to feel like this was the most exotic place I’d ever been, but it felt like the most ‘home’ I’ve ever been. The landscape and the people and the principle of ubuntu … we hear a lot about the bad things in Africa, but we don’t see on the news the incredible kindness and sweetness that’s knitted into the souls of South Africans. There’s a spiritual essence in the country and its people that’s so powerful and magical, and it matches what I feel in my heart as the way humanity should be living. It’s so good for the heart and it’s so good for the soul.”

Martha has been visiting us at Londolozi for many years now, and has dreamed of sharing South Africa with others. It’s no secret that dogs cost money, especially when it comes to veterinary visits. From routine vaccinations to serious illness or injury, there are thousands of reasons dog owners seek medical help for their dogs each year – and pay a very pretty penny for it.

Although all dog owners should be ready to handle emergencies, understanding your breed’s common health problems (if they have any) is important when making day to day decisions about your dog’s health.

If you’re looking to avoid costly veterinary care and frequent doctor visits, you might want to avoid some breeds completely. Recently, analysts over at Petbreeds, a pet research site, have been working with Veterinary Pet Insurance Co. (VPI) to create a list of dog breeds that rack up the highest veterinary costs per year.

VPI is one of the largest pet insurance providers in the United States, so they have quite a bit of data to work with. Looking at various breeds across 2,000 VPI policies, the teams compiled a list of the dog breeds with the largest amounts, on average, of injury and illness claims. Please note that dental cleanings and annual wellness exams were not included in the study, only injury and illness claims. 

#1 – Bernese Mountain Dog

The average cost claimed per year for Bernese Mountain Dogs is $1,361. This large working breed is strong but gentle, making an excellent companion for children and people of all ages. They are predisposed to a number of health problems, including many types of cancer (osteosarcoma, lymphosarcoma, mast cell tumors, malignant histiocytosis and fibrosarcoma), cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy, arthritis, hip dysplasia, osteochondritis and cruciate ligament ruptures.

#2 – Newfoundland

The average cost claimed per year for Newfoundlands is $1,294. Newfoundlands are large, gentle dogs originally bred to rescue victims in the icy waters of Canada. Because of this, they are extremely good-natured and docile. Unfortunately, they are predisposed to certain health issues. These include hip and elbow dysplasia, epilepsy, subvalvular aortic stenosis (which causes what is most accurately described as a heart attack) and bladder stones.

The average cost claimed per year for Rottweilers is $1,186. The Rottweiler is a large, powerful working dog with a deep loyalty to its family. They make excellent active companions, but are predisposed to a variety of health concerns. These include hip dysplasia, Osteochondritis dissecans (a shoulder joint problem), hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, osteosarcoma and cataracts.

The average cost claimed per year for English Cocker Spaniels is $1,172. These playful dogs were originally bred to be hunters, but they make excellent family companions today. Skin allergies, benign tumors, cataracts and deafness are common issues seen in this breed. Aside from physical ailments, Cockers are often victims of Rage Syndrome. Rage syndrome is described as a dog attacking suddenly, savagely and without awareness of its surroundings. Although it can affect any breed, it is most commonly diagnosed in Cocker Spaniels.

The average cost claimed per year for Doberman Pinschers is $1,163. Doberman Pinschers are large, powerful dogs that enjoy spending time with their owners. They are deeply loyal, active dogs that are unfortunately plagued by many health issues. The most common diseases found in Dobermans include dilated cardiomyopathy, von Willebrand’s disease and cervical vertebral instability. Prostatic disease, hip dysplasia, bloat and hypothyroidism should also be considered.

A mischievous fox cub had to be rescued after it got his head wedged in a car wheel in a shed in Orpington. The RSPCA was called and an officer rushed to help the young fox escape.

The rescuer found the fox cub’s sister waiting anxiously by her brother’s side as she refused to leave him alone in Bromley. Rodney Kenny used soap and was able to gently ease him out.

Rodney said: “This little chap had put his head through the middle hole of the wheel, but to his dismay, then found he couldn’t get it back out again.” He continued: “The residents had also discovered his sister in the shed, anxiously watching her brother. I knew that there was no time to spare.

“It is likely he had been trapped for several days without food or water, so the little fox needed to be freed as soon as possible.” As the callers hadn’t seen the cubs’ mother for some time, the RSPCA decided to take both into care. The incredible rescue from April 18, 2022, made the list of the RSPCA’s ‘funniest top animal rescues of 2022’.

In 2022, the charity’s officers were called to thousands of incidents, including many in which birds, wildlife, pets and farm animals have found themselves in a sticky situation. Dermot Murphy, RSPCA Inspectorate Commissioner, said: “With our teams out rescuing animals from danger and suffering 365 days a year, we’re often their only hope.

“It’s an honour to be able to lend a hand to animals in desperate need and we hope people enjoy seeing some of the weird and wonderful places animals have found themselves in need of our help. This winter we’re asking people to show their support by joining the rescue to help us raise funds to make sure we can continue to be there for animals in need.”

Pet Poison Helpline Also Announces 2022 Toxin Tails Winner

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (Jan. 18, 2023) – With a name like Professor Sweetcheeks, you wouldn’t think he needed mood medications. When this rascally rodent got his paws on some sertraline, the active ingredient in Zoloft, however, the drug made its way into his cheeks faster than you can say, well, Professor Sweetcheeks.

“Our 11-year-old son Gregory begged for a pet hamster, and named him Professor Sweetcheeks,” said Christie of St. Louis, Mo. “A few months ago, we let Professor Sweetcheeks scurry around the kitchen island while we cut up carrots for him, and the next thing we knew, he was eating a Zoloft that was accidentally left on the counter. When we couldn’t remove the pill from his cheek, I asked my husband Greg to call poison control. They informed us the closest emergency hospital that treated rodents was 45 minutes away.”

At this point, it was time for the family to divide and concur. Greg shuttled the kids to school and other activities, while Christie loaded up Professor Sweetcheeks’ cage into the family minivan and headed off to the animal emergency hospital. The family was taking a trip to Lake of the Ozarks, so Christie was planning to meet the family down there once the hamster was released from the hospital.

Once Professor Sweetcheeks made it to Fox Creek Veterinary Hospital in Wildwood, Mo., Dr. Nelson, the veterinarian, worked on getting him to empty his cheek pouches while on the phone with the Pet Poison Helpline team. They removed some dissolving pill material, but it was very likely the hamster ingested some of the medication. His cheeks were flushed with water after emptying and was then administered activated charcoal to prevent absorption of any remaining medication in his GI tract. The next step was to determine if Professor Sweetcheeks had ingested a toxic amount of sertraline.

“There is no specific toxic dose amount of sertraline for hamsters,” said Dr. Renee Schmid, a senior veterinary toxicologist at Pet Poison Helpline. “Given their relationship with other rodents used when the drug was being studied, however, we were able to determine there was a severe risk for poisoning, which can result in central nervous system (CNS) and cardiovascular signs. We recommended decontamination, monitoring and supportive care including fluids, sedation and methocarbamol, which is used to treat muscle tremors.”

While treating him for the accidental ingestion, the hospital team noticed that Professor Sweetcheeks also had severe dental disease. Because of the thorough veterinary care provided by the team at Fox Creek Veterinary Hospital, all of Professor Sweetcheeks’ treatment needs were met.

“Although Professor Sweetcheeks made a full recovery, it could have been much more serious,” added Dr. Schmid. “According to data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey released by the Center for Disease Control (CDC), 13% of adults aged 18 and over used antidepressant medications in the past 30 days.  The growth in the use of medications like Zoloft means more pets are in potential danger of accidental poisoning.”

“The moral of this story is — don’t leave your family’s medication on the counter if you have a pet,” added Christie. “Hundreds of dollars later, and multiple trips to the veterinarian in one day, we learned our lesson. We’re just relieved that Professor Sweetcheeks is still his curious, cuddly self and didn’t experience any seizures. He recuperated in the Ozarks, where we woke him every few hours to check on him.”

When it comes to our dogs and cats, a species-appropriate diet helps support good digestion. Knowing the difference between a carnivorous and omnivorous diet is a good place to start, along with a basic understanding of how your animal’s digestive system works – and how acupressure can be used to further support those processes and boost your dog or cat’s health and well-being.

Carnivores, Omnivores, and Other Definitions

Carnivores

Dogs and cats are considered carnivores because they are monogastric, which means they have a single stomach. They also have sharp, pointy teeth designed to rip meat off bones, and their jaws are so strong they can tear the meat with a shearing action. As carnivores, cats and dogs are very much alike in these respects.

Omnivores

An animal with the ability to eat and digest both plant and animal matter is considered an omnivore. Dogs are omnivores as well as carnivores; however, cats are omnivorous to only a limited extent. Even though both species have the same digestive systems, their ancestral, biological imperatives differ when it comes to specific amounts of certain nutrients.

Protein obligates

Cats are protein obligates, which means a high percentage of their diet must be meat, fish, or another high-quality protein. They need very few vegetables or grains. In fact, the only plant matter a cat needs is about the size of what the mouse has left in its stomach when it becomes the cat’s dinner. People often say their cats are picky eaters, but it may be for a good reason. Kittens in the wild are taught by their mothers how to hunt and what’s safe to eat. The food you think might be ideal may not be the best for your cat, and she knows it. As protein obligates, cats know they need real meat, fish, and organs to be healthy.

Hint: If your cat is “finicky,” it probably means you are not offering enough of the foods she deems edible.

Opportunivores

On the other hand, dogs can readily digest many forms of plant matter along with meat, fish proteins, and any other food they can find. Dogs can gobble and digest chunks of food with ease and are far less discriminating than cats. This is why stray dogs can survive on the streets for quite some time; when they’re hungry, they’ll track down a discarded burrito or a piece of fried chicken and eat it voraciously. Because of this, dogs can be considered “opportunivores” as well as carnivores and omnivores, because they have the ability to thrive on a wide variety of foods.

So, you probably want to start saying that to your parents. But keep in mind that this is not the only time when you’ll spend money. Insurance, a collar or harness and leash, a bed, a kennel, a puppy playpen, food bowls and healthy foods are all essentials for your dog and you need to buy them. Strategize on how to help your parents with the expenses that come with having a dog. Take some part-time jobs delivering newspapers or mowing the lawn. With that, you’ll probably convince your parents to get you a dog!
