  • Is The Tortoise Pan Male Leopard Expanding Further South? – Londolozi Blog

    [ad_1]

The late afternoon light has a way of revealing the bush’s finer details. Shadows stretch, colours soften, and animals that remained hidden during the heat of the day begin to stir. It was during one of these golden-hour game drives that we were reminded, once again, why the Tortoise Pan Male Leopard has become such a compelling presence on Londolozi in recent weeks.

The Tortoise Pan male rests in this marula tree. The dangling legs and tail, and his dappled coat was what caught our eye.

Born 2016 to Ndzanzeni Female, royal descendant of Mother Leopard. Now a dominant force in the north.

We were moving slowly along a relatively new stretch of road when a flicker of movement high in a marula tree caught our attention. There, draped effortlessly across a thick horizontal branch, lay the Tortoise Pan Male. His powerful frame seemed almost too large for the tree, yet he rested with the ease of an animal completely at home. The marula’s leaves filtered the afternoon sunlight onto his coat, igniting the rosettes along his flanks in warm hues of gold and amber. From our vantage point below, it was one of those sightings that caused conversation to fade into quiet appreciation.

He had likely been there for some time, using the elevated position to survey the area or escape the lingering warmth of the day. Every so often, he lifted his head, scanning the surrounding bush. There was no tension in his posture, no urgency. From a guiding perspective, these moments feel particularly special. They suggest familiarity, not only with the landscape, but increasingly with this part of the Londolozi property itself.

Over the past few weeks, it has become increasingly evident just how often the Tortoise Pan Male leopard is being encountered here. Once considered more peripheral to the area, his presence is now a regular feature of our game drives. Fresh tracks criss-crossing the roads in the early mornings, scent marks on prominent trees, and repeated visual sightings all point toward a shift that is difficult to ignore.

    Tortoise Pan Male Stare Pg

The Tortoise Pan Male and all dominant male leopards of the Sabi Sand Game Reserve have noticeable scars and facial markings that tell the stories of their past and their rise to dominance in a very leopard-dense area.

When dominant males start pushing boundaries, it usually happens gradually. They don’t redraw their territories overnight. Instead, you’ll see a steady pattern: more sign, more confident movement, and a leopard that looks increasingly comfortable in areas where you didn’t often find him before.

That’s why the idea of a southward movement is starting to make sense. The Tortoise Pan Male has been moving through more open spaces with ease, sometimes in good daylight, and showing very little concern about being seen. Those are the kinds of small behavioural clues that suggest a leopard is testing space — and possibly beginning to claim it.

From my perspective, witnessing this process is fascinating. Leopards are remarkably adaptable animals, constantly responding to pressure from rival males, prey availability, and the movements of females. A southward expansion of his territorial area could be influenced by any combination of these factors. There have been signs of activity from other males further north, along with increased female movement within Londolozi’s boundaries. For a dominant male, such changes represent both opportunity and challenge.

Nm Tortoise Pan Male Leopard Descending Marula

The Tortoise Pan male carefully descends the Marula tree after scanning the surrounding area.

Eventually, he stirred. He shifted his weight, stretched, and climbed down the marula with ease. At the base of the tree he paused, nose lifted, taking in the air for a few seconds before slipping off into the thickets and disappearing as quietly as he’d been found.

For guests, sightings like these are often remembered as isolated highlights, a leopard in a tree, bathed in afternoon light. For us as guides, they are chapters in a much larger, evolving story. Each encounter adds context, helping us understand how this male is navigating a changing landscape and possibly redefining his place within it.

If his recent movements are anything to go by, the Tortoise Pan Male is becoming an increasingly important figure on Londolozi. Whether this southward shift becomes permanent remains to be seen, but for now, his growing presence has added a palpable sense of anticipation to every drive.

Out here, the bush reveals its stories slowly. And sometimes, those stories begin with something as simple — and as extraordinary — as a leopard resting in a Marula tree, quietly reminding us that change is always underway.

  • A Bus Full of Dogs Pulls Off the Most Wholesome Valentine’s Day Group Shot

    [ad_1]

Before most people had even finished their morning coffee on Valentine’s Day, something extraordinary was happening inside a bright yellow school bus in a quiet Wisconsin town. Nearly two dozen dogs sat patiently in their seats, their tails wagging softly as they balanced heart-shaped headbands between their ears. There was no barking chaos or restless pacing. Instead, the bus felt calm and full of quiet anticipation. At the center of it all was Hope Mehlberg, moving down the aisle with gentle encouragement and treats, orchestrating a moment that looked almost impossible.

    Credit: TikTok

Behind the wheel was Hope Mehlberg, smiling as she handed out treats and praise. What looked like a simple photo opportunity was actually the result of years of trust, patience, and a leap of faith that changed her life.

Hope is not a professional dog trainer. She is the owner of K9 Konvoy in Oconto, Wisconsin, about 30 miles north of Green Bay. But on that bus, she has created something that feels almost magical.

“They’re very well compensated for their patience with me,” Mehlberg told The Dodo.

The secret is not just snacks, though she keeps a fanny pack filled with them at all times. It is connection.

Just a few years ago, Hope’s life looked very different. She worked for the federal government for nearly a decade. She managed people. She carried stress home with her every night. She felt drained and unhappy.

    “I was miserable,” she said.

During a difficult period in her life, she began walking her own dogs, Dodge and Teddy, to clear her mind. The quiet rhythm of paws on pavement helped steady her. Soon she was walking relatives’ dogs too. The time outdoors, surrounded by wagging tails and eager eyes, gave her a sense of peace she had not felt in years.

Then one frightening moment changed everything.

A dog was hit by a truck right in front of Hope’s house. The sound stopped her cold. She rushed outside and saw the injured pup lying on the road, confused and in pain. His body trembled. His eyes were wide with fear.

“Being a dog lover, I obviously couldn’t leave the injured dog,” she said.

Hope quickly found his owner, who had just moved to the area. Together, hearts pounding, they drove to an emergency animal hospital. The ride felt endless. No one knew if the dog would survive.

“We didn’t know if he was going to pull through or not,” Hope said. “You can imagine how worried we were during the drive.”

Trying to lighten the heavy silence, Hope made a simple promise. If he survived, she would love for him to join the dog day care she had been dreaming about starting.

The dog, named Zeppelin, spent four nights in intensive care. Machines beeped softly around him. His body fought to heal. And slowly, he did.

When Zeppelin finally came home, Hope received a call that would shape her future. His family wanted him to join her group.

Zeppelin became her very first official client.

    From Rescue to Rolling Joy

    Credit: TikTok

With three acres of land at her parents’ house, Hope built a private dog park. It was an open space filled with fresh air, soft grass, and room to run. She offered pickup and drop-off services, driving around town to collect her four-legged clients.

The business grew quickly. Her SUV soon became too cramped for the growing pack of wagging passengers. So she did something bold. She bought a school bus and retrofitted it just for dogs.

Now, about two dozen pups ride together each day. Each one is buckled in with a seat belt for safety. Some press their noses to the windows. Others sit patiently, watching Hope move down the aisle with treats in hand.

“A lot of my pet parents say it’s like a magic bus,” Hope said.

But the calm photos and adorable headbands are not accidents. Hope waits until the dogs are happily tired from playing before attempting pictures. She sticks to a consistent routine every single day.

“We load up, we play, we get our snacks and we go home,” she explained. “Dogs thrive on repetition and routine.”

The dogs know what to expect. They understand her voice, her commands, the gentle way she resets if something does not work. If a pup feels unsure about wearing a headband, she pauses. She gives them space. She tries again later.

“The biggest thing is patience,” she said. “Don’t force it.”

One by one, she walks down the bus aisle. A headband. A treat. Soft praise. Another headband. Another treat. The dogs glance at each other as if silently agreeing to join in. Before long, the bus is filled with heart-shaped smiles and wagging tails.

Still, Hope calls her daily routine “organized chaos.” Driving, picking up dogs, checking seat belts, managing personalities. It is hard work. It demands focus and love in equal measure.

Yet when she pulls up to a home and opens her door, the dogs’ reactions say it all. They greet her with bouncing paws and shining eyes. Some spin in circles. Others press against her legs, unable to contain their excitement.

For Hope, that joy is everything.

    Credit: TikTok

These dogs did more than help her start a business. They gave her purpose. They turned a moment of crisis on a quiet road into a life filled with movement, laughter, and second chances.

Zeppelin’s survival was not just his own victory. It was the beginning of something bigger. A bus full of dogs. A woman who found happiness. And a daily reminder that sometimes the bravest leap leads straight to love.

  • Dog’s Favorite Part of the Day? Waking Up His Goose Friend

    [ad_1]

The day truly begins when the garden door slowly creaks open, and a burst of anticipation fills the air. Nino is already waiting, tail swishing eagerly as sunlight spills across the grass. The instant there is space to run, he bolts forward with playful determination, circling the yard in wide, joyful loops. Close behind him, Rillette steps out with feathers slightly puffed and eyes alert, ready to join the fun. What unfolds each morning is more than simple play. It is a cherished routine that sets the tone for their entire day.

    Credit: YouTube

What follows is a ritual neither of them would ever skip.

Nino dashes around the yard, paws thudding against the earth, gently teasing Rillette to chase him. She honks loudly and charges after him with surprising speed. The garden fills with the sound of happy chaos. Leaves rustle. Wings flap. Paws skid in the grass.

They can keep this up for hours.

Eventually, Nino slows down, tongue hanging out as he collapses into the lawn in dramatic defeat. That is when Rillette claims her victory. She marches over him with proud little steps, honking triumphantly at the end as if announcing she has won again. It is her signature move, and Nino accepts it every time.

Despite her bossy confidence, Rillette clearly adores her big brother. She watches him closely. She follows his lead. With Nino by her side, the world feels safe.

A Friendship That Changed Them Both

    Credit: YouTube

Rillette may strut around like she runs the garden, but she relies on Nino in ways that go far beyond play. She studies how he reacts to new sounds and visitors. When something startles her, she looks to him for reassurance. If he is calm, she settles. If he moves forward, she follows.

Through him, she is learning how to navigate the world one day at a time.

What makes their bond even more touching is how much Nino has grown because of her.

Before Rillette came along, Nino was timid and unsure of himself. New situations made him nervous. Loud noises sent him retreating. He preferred the comfort of quiet corners and familiar routines.

Then he became a big brother.

    Google News Follow Us button

With Rillette depending on him, something shifted inside Nino. He began standing a little taller. He explored more of the yard. He approached unfamiliar moments with curiosity instead of fear. Protecting and guiding his feathery sibling gave him purpose.

Now, when Rillette charges after him, honking and flapping, Nino does not just run. He leads. He checks back to make sure she is close. He gently nudges her if she strays too far. His once cautious spirit has blossomed into quiet confidence.

    Credit: YouTube

Together, they have created their own little world in that garden. A world filled with playful chases, proud honks, and the steady comfort of knowing they have each other.

In the most unexpected way, a goose helped a shy dog find his courage. And a once timid pup became the brave big brother she needed.

  • After Being Abandoned, This Devoted Dog Couldn’t Hide His Heartbreak

    [ad_1]

Few things are as difficult to witness as the quiet heartbreak of a dog who knows he has been left behind. Inside a modest shelter room, on a simple raised bed with a thin blanket, AJ lay frozen in confusion and grief. Only hours earlier, the person he trusted most had walked away, leaving him in unfamiliar surroundings filled with strange smells and distant barking. The weight of that loss pressed heavily on him. His chest rose and fell with shaky breaths, and his eyes searched the doorway as if hoping this painful moment was only temporary.

    Credit: YouTube

AJ had been surrendered by the only person he trusted. One day, he had a home. Next, he was left behind without explanation. The shelter staff could see the moment it sank in. He was not going back.

His body told the story before anyone said a word. AJ lay still, breathing hard. His small frame trembled against the thin blanket. His eyes, once bright, were glassy and wet with tears. He seemed to stare at the door, as if hoping it might open again.

    But it never did.

The room was quiet except for the soft sounds of the shelter around him. Other dogs barked in the distance. Footsteps echoed down the hallway. AJ barely reacted. The cheerful, clever dog he once was had folded into himself.

He understood more than people realized. He felt the absence. He felt the loss. And he grieved.

The staff tried everything they could. Gentle voices. Slow strokes along his back. Extra time sitting beside him so he would not feel alone. They brought treats and toys, hoping something might spark a flicker of interest.

    Nothing worked at first.

AJ’s sadness deepened into something heavier. He stopped responding the way most dogs do. His spirit seemed dim. It was clear he needed more than comfort. He needed a second chance.

    Credit: YouTube

    A Video That Changed Everything

Out of both concern and hope, the shelter team decided to share AJ’s story online. They filmed him quietly lying on his bed, capturing the raw truth of his heartbreak. There was no dramatic music or flashy editing. Just AJ, breathing through his pain.

The video touched thousands of hearts.

People saw not just a dog, but a soul who had loved and lost. They saw his trembling body. They saw the tears in his eyes. Most of all, they saw how deeply he felt.

Within days, messages began pouring in.

Then came the call every shelter hopes for. A family had watched the video and could not stop thinking about him. They wanted to meet AJ.

The first meeting was gentle and slow. AJ was cautious. He had learned what it felt like to be left behind. But this time, the hands reaching for him were patient. The voices were soft. There was no rush.

    Google News Follow Us button

    Something shifted.

He lifted his head. His tail gave a small, uncertain wag. It was the first sign of hope anyone had seen since he arrived.

Soon after, AJ left the shelter, not alone, but walking beside his new family.

  • Rescued Zoo Tiger Meets Water for the First Time and It’s Magical

    [ad_1]

The first time Maruay eased himself into the cool, sparkling water at his sanctuary, it was impossible not to feel emotional watching him. His powerful striped body moved with surprising gentleness as he tested the pool, then fully surrendered to it, splashing and paddling with pure delight. He swatted at the ripples like an oversized cub discovering a new toy, then rolled slightly to float, completely at ease. In that simple, playful moment, you could see a tiger rediscovering something he had been denied for far too long: freedom, comfort, and unburdened joy.

    Credit: Facebook

Today, Maruay is calm, playful, and full of life. He loves nothing more than drifting in the water or bounding through the grass. He rolls onto his back, stretches in the sunshine, and watches the world around him with quiet contentment. It is hard to imagine that his early years were spent somewhere so different.

Maruay was born at Phuket Zoo in Thailand. For the first two years of his life, he lived in cramped, crumbling enclosures. The space was small and barren. There was little room to roam, no soft grass beneath his paws, no pools to cool off in. Like many captive-bred tigers, he was raised to be a tourist photo prop. Visitors would come and go, but Maruay remained confined behind concrete and metal.

The environment took more than physical space from him. Tigers are curious and intelligent animals. They need stimulation, territory, and the freedom to explore. Instead, Maruay’s world was limited to a few steps in each direction. The noise and constant presence of people must have been overwhelming. Yet even then, he maintained a gentle and steady spirit.

    A 700-Kilometer Journey to Freedom

    Credit: Facebook

Tom from the Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand spent months working to secure the release of the zoo’s tigers and bears. Negotiations were not simple. Rescue requires patience, persistence, and careful planning. Finally, the day came when Maruay’s future changed forever.

He was carefully placed into a transport crate and driven nearly 700 kilometers to the rescue center. The journey was long and unfamiliar. Every sound and movement must have felt uncertain. He had no way of knowing that each passing mile carried him closer to safety.

When the crate door finally opened, Maruay stepped into a completely new world. Grass stretched beneath his paws. Trees swayed gently nearby. Clean pools of water shimmered in the sunlight.

    He did not hesitate.

Maruay bolted forward, sprinting through the grass. He explored every corner, then made a beeline for the water. With a powerful leap, he dove in. He splashed, paddled, and floated as if he had been waiting his whole life for that moment.

    Google News Follow Us button

Over time, his playful energy settled into peaceful confidence. He learned that this place was different. Here, there were no crowds pressing in. No tiny cages. No expectations. Just space, safety, and care.

Now, Maruay spends his days exactly as a tiger should. He lounges in the shade when the heat rises. He swims whenever the mood strikes. He interacts calmly with his surroundings, secure in the knowledge that he is protected.

    Credit: Facebook

For Tom and the rescue team, seeing Maruay thrive is a powerful reminder of why their work matters. Each rescued animal carries a story of hardship. But they also carry resilience. Watching Maruay float lazily in his pool, eyes half closed in contentment, shows what is possible when compassion replaces captivity.

Maruay’s transformation is not just about physical freedom. It is about dignity. It is about giving a wild animal the chance to feel safe, curious, and joyful again.

  • The Real Price of Success

    [ad_1]

After three days of competition, a 4-year-old female Doberman, Connquest Best Of Both Worlds, aka “Penny,” beat out 2,500 dogs to take home the crown of ‘Best in Show’ at the 150th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. While the announcement was met with cheers and thunderous applause around the arena, it has drawn criticism worldwide for the way in which the surgically altered Doberman breed standard is not only normalized in the United States but also celebrated. So much so that many people don’t even realize that the so-called characteristic upright ears and short tail are not natural Doberman traits.

The origins of the Doberman Pinscher lie with Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann, a German tax collector, night watchman, dogcatcher, and keeper of a dog pound, in the late 19th century. Thought to be a cocktail of Rottweiler, German Pinscher, Black and Tan Terriers, Weimaraner, and short-haired shepherds, the Doberman was first registered with the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1908.1 Although the resultant dog ticked most of his desired boxes, he was unable to achieve his vision of a more intimidating beast with naturally pricked-up ears through breeding alone, and so the ears were cut.

    How Did Ear Cropping Start?

Although the exact origins of ear cropping are difficult to ascertain, it is believed that the practice of removing part of the ear flap or pinna may have been an attempt to tackle ear infections. If you’ve ever had a dog that suffers from chronic otitis, you would know how challenging this condition can be to manage with modern medicine, let alone without the aid of the antibiotics and antifungals we have today.2 Presumably, it was noted that dogs that had undergone this rather extreme procedure appeared more menacing, more appealing, and were less susceptible to torn ears when thrown into dog-fighting rings. And so, the procedure of ear cropping became more widely accepted and encouraged, making its way into the breed standards of numerous dogs, including the Doberman, Great Dane, Boxer, and Cane Corso.

Coupled with the stern appearance of a docked tail, the ‘Doberman’s look’ is based largely on a fantasy of an intimidating, stoic, and alert guard dog. In reality, as most Doberman lovers will tell you, these dogs tend to be affectionate, loyal, and occasionally highly strung; not exactly the traits of a fearsome attack beast! Unfortunately, the ‘breed standard’ is often seen as biblical in stature, the authority of which cannot be challenged or altered. Despite being written within the last 120 years, the idea of making alterations to the dogma seems to be outrageous to Doberman devotees, while making alterations to the dog itself is, rather ironically, perfectly acceptable.

Despite a century of docking and cropping, the majority of Europe, including the UK, Australia, and New Zealand have completely outlawed ear cropping and limited tail docking, and with new laws being introduced in the only outlier, Ontario, ear cropping will soon be illegal in all of Canada. Unsurprisingly, the kennel clubs of these countries updated their breed standards to match, proving that it can be done.

Kennel Clubs Need To Do Better

The Westminster Kennel Club, established in 1877, is America’s oldest organization dedicated to the sport of dogs; even older than the American Kennel Club, which dates back to 1884. The emphasis on conformation is a point of pride for the club, whose standards many dog breeders and owners dream of meeting. With so much influence over the canine community, the Westminster Kennel Club, along with all kennel clubs, has a responsibility to set standards that are in the best interests of the health and welfare of the dogs, and this is simply not the case.

By giving top honors to a dog whose natural features have been mutilated in order to conform to some perceived version of perfection, the Westminster Kennel Club has, in no uncertain terms, indicated that they continue to put appearances before welfare. The dog-loving community looks to the authority of these organizations, and the example they have set is disappointingly outdated.

We contacted Westminster Kennel Club to hear what they thought about the backlash over awarding a docked & cropped dog Best in Show, and how that decision aligns with their mission to “enhance the lives of all dogs, celebrate the companionship of dogs, promote responsible dog ownership, and breed preservation.”

At the time of writing, we have not received a response.

So it would appear that the kennel clubs of America are not in any hurry to join the rest of the world in eradicating elective surgical mutilation of dogs for the purposes of aesthetics, but that doesn’t mean we should simply accept this position. Change starts with education, and helping those who have been misinformed to understand that ear cropping is a wholly unnecessary and entirely aesthetic procedure is how we can bring about that change. Surgically altering an animal to suit our preferences simply shouldn’t be happening in this modern age, and using ‘breed standard’ as justification makes no sense when such standards can be rewritten.

  • When The Bush Paints Outside The Lines- Leucistic Impala and Buffalo – Londolozi Blog

    [ad_1]

Every now and then, the bush throws us a surprise, and on this specific day, there were two surprises, and no, they didn’t include any predators, but quite the opposite. As the sun rose over the eastern horizon, we had planned to go out and look for a leopard. An excited vehicle of people, ranger and tracker included, we meandered our way into the southeastern parts of the reserve in search of the Nkoveni Female and her son, the Shingi Male.

Rising the first crest, we came across a herd of impala, and the first surprise was waiting. Amongst the herd, there was a flash of white… There it was again. Binoculars up, we gazed into the somewhat different blue eyes of an impala lamb. The front left flank of the impala lamb was white. The neck and face looked slightly different; we had come across a semi-white impala lamb. WOW.

The striking white flank of this impala lamb caught our attention very quickly. A closer look exposed the blue eyes. What a special morning.

The second surprise came later that day on the afternoon game drive. After hearing that a herd of buffalo were found in the morning, we explored the open grasslands of the southwest in search of this group of buffalo that was reportedly no less than 600 individuals, and this was correct. Spread out amongst a few mud wallows, because of our recent rains, hundreds of buffalo bathed in the mud, trying to escape the heat of the day. Among the group, a buffalo cow and calf lay away from the herd, and again the cow was littered with white spots. Not to the extent of the impala lamb we had come across that morning, but nonetheless she looked a little different.

Bt Buffalo Clsoe Up With Leucistic Spots

At first, I thought the white spots might have been dried mud, but on closer inspection, it wasn’t. Not only was this buffalo’s fur white, but the skin in these spots also lacked the presence of melanin.

Both these sightings got me thinking. Both animals were blemished with white markings, but it wasn’t enough to consider them albino. This is a condition known as leucism. But what exactly is the difference?

    What is Leucism?

Leucism occurs because of a genetic variation that affects pigment cells in the body. Pigment cells are responsible for creating melanin, which gives an animal their normal skin, hair and fur colouring. In leucistic animals, these pigment cells fail to develop fully or simply do not reach certain parts of the body, and as a result, white/bland patches occur, such as the impala lamb and buffalo cow above.

My next thought was how this would affect the animal’s safety? In prey species like impala, being easily noticed could be risky, but many animals with small patches or spots live perfectly normal lives, which gives me hope for the little impala lamb. The fact that the buffalo was a fully grown cow with a calf tells me her life was not hindered at all by her “beauty” spots.

    Bt Leucistic Impala Lamb Portrait

The horizontal pupil of prey species is often spoken about but hard to see, and the blue eyes of this lamb allowed us to take a close look. The horizontal pupil allows these animals to have a panoramic view that allows them to see up to 300 degrees around them.

    What is Albinism?

Often confused with leucism, albinism is the condition where animals cannot produce melanin at all. These animals are completely white, often have pink eyes and pink noses, and as a result often have poor eyesight, and their skin can be incredibly sensitive to sunlight.

The fact that these animals would stand out a lot more in the wild means they face much greater challenges in terms of survival. Very rarely do they make it to adulthood.

Sz Albino Buffalo Calf And Mother

An example of an albino buffalo calf captured by Sean Zeederberg this time two years ago.

After everything that has been said, I am hopeful for the impala lamb. Although this little animal stands out now, if she manages to evade a few predators in her early years, there’s hope she will live to adulthood.

I find it amazing how individuality still attracts the attention of everyone. An often overlooked species entertained us for a good 20 minutes just because this impala lamb stood out. A sighting like this is a stark reminder that you never know what you’re going to come across out in the bush. There is always room for the unexpected in the wild.

  • Private dog-friendly airlines | Animal Wellness Magazine

    [ad_1]

See how dog-first aviation services are redefining air travel with in-cabin seating, no cargo holds, and stress-free perks for every canine passenger.

When it comes to air travel, dog parents want safety and comfort for their four-legged friends. Thanks to the introduction of private dog-friendly airlines, canines of all sizes can fly stress-free with their families. Your dog can relax in your lap, lie by your feet, or even enjoy a seat of her own. No more cargo holds! Let’s take a look at what’s out there.

How private aviation services are revolutionizing air travel for dogs

Private airlines that prioritize comfortable, humane, stress-free travel for dogs include Retriev Air and Bark Air. They allow animals to have a “pet-first” experience with no cargo holds, no carriers, and no size restrictions.

    • Retriev Air was launched in May 2025. It operates in a similar fashion to a train or bus, with passengers paying for each “leg” of their journey. For example, a flight from LA to Denver is a “one leg” flight; LA to Chicago is “two legs”.

The company’s jets fly out of additional major US cities, including New York, Dallas, Fort Lauderdale, and others.

At each stop along the way, you have an opportunity to walk your dog and get some refreshments. Smaller terminals help reduce the anxiety and overstimulation dogs can experience at big airports.

The crew spaces animals apart during boarding, and boards you from back to front of the aircraft. This helps prevent your dog from getting stressed and over-excited by the close proximity of other dogs.

Passengers pay by the seat to give themselves and their animals as much room as they need. Dogs under 40 pounds can sit on your lap or by your feet. You must book a separate seat for larger dogs You must leash or harness your dog to the seat for taxiing, takeoff and landing, and during turbulence.

Retriev Air offers in-flight treats and water for your dog, as well as complimentary drinks and snacks for you. All in-flight crew have been trained in proper animal handling.

As a bonus, the airline puts a focus on social impact. It partners with several animal rescue organizations, such as the Sato Project, to help fly adopted animals to their new forever homes.

    • Bark Air, another private airline for dogs, launched in the spring of 2024. It currently serves New York City, Los Angeles and San Francisco. The airline also offers international flights to London, Paris, Madrid and Lisbon. They plan to begin New York to Florida flights soon.

The company partners with US air carriers that that take sole responsibility for operating the aircraft. That way, Bark Air can concentrate on prioritizing your dog’s safety, comfort and happiness. You can design your own route or charter a short hop to connect with one of their scheduled flights.

Perks include a “Just in Case Bag” containing calming treat aids, pee pads, poop bags, cleaning supplies and more. Also on offer is a “Dogs Fly First” flight prep with calming pheromones and music. You even have access to aids such as noise-cancelling earmuffs and calming jackets for your dog.

During the in-cabin flight (no cargo hold or crate), the crew provides treats for your dog. These are served with water or bone broth. In-flight services also include an optional brush, refreshing wipe, and paw and nose balm.

It’s important to note that both airlines require up-to-date rabies vaccines. Additionally, you will pay more for tickets than you would for a commercial airline. But knowing your dog can travel in the cabin with you, and will be pampered and well taken care of throughout the flight, is worth the extra cost.

Private dog-friendly airlines point to a new era of hospitality where animals are no longer relegated to the cargo hold. Instead, they’re treated as honored guests, traveling in comfort and safety.

As Retriev Air puts it: “Pets deserve to be part of every journey, regardless of their size. Every pet rides in the cabin, every family stays together, and every trip feels like freedom.”

Preparing your dog for air travel

According to a 2024 GlobalVetLink survey, 78% of American animal parents now travel with their fur-babies. With Gen Z and Millennials leading the trend, demand for dog-friendly airline travel is expected to grow.

“Air travel can be stressful for pets, but with the right preparation, it doesn’t have to be,” says veterinarian Dr. Nelva Bryant. “Whether a pet is flying commercially or on a private jet, their comfort and safety should always come first.”

Dr. Bryant became the first on-staff airline veterinarian for a major U.S. carrier, where she helps shape animal welfare policies for safe and humane transport.

“Pets should be healthy, properly identified with an ISO-compliant microchip, and well-prepared for the journey ahead,” she advises. For commercial flights, “crate acclimation is one of the most important steps you can take. Pets need time to become familiar and relaxed in their travel crate. It should feel like a safe space, not a strange box on travel day.”

Dr. Bryant adds that for private jets, where dogs often travel outside their crates or carriers, a familiar blanket, mat, or harness helps them feel secure. “Above all, avoid sedation and focus on calm, positive experiences. Compassionate preparation is what makes every journey safer and more humane.”

Help! My Puppy Has a Heart Murmur!

    “Hi Dr. Paola,

My new 9-week-old Sheltie puppy was just diagnosed with a heart murmur with a grade of 5/6. On our vet’s recommendation, we are trying to get an appointment with a cardiologist at Auburn University, whom she knows. In the meantime, how can we help Blondie to be her best? She loves rough house playing with our other two sheltie puppies. She’s a tough little cookie and usually starts it. Is this dangerous for her with the murmur? Nobody has ever hurt anybody. I watch to make sure she’s not panting or passing out. And she hasn’t. What do I do if she did? I feed them a good dog food, dry, freeze-dried with only good ingredients, including ginger and chicory. Fresh water all day. What else can I do? Do I need to be aware that this condition may be fatal? How
    likely? Thank you.”
     – Becky

    Dear Becky,

This is understandably frightening news, especially with such a young puppy, and you are doing exactly the right thing by pursuing a cardiology evaluation promptly. A grade 5 out of 6 heart murmur in a 9-week-old puppy is considered loud and clinically significant, which means it is very likely associated with an underlying structural heart condition rather than a benign puppy murmur. That does not automatically mean it is fatal, but it does mean Blondie’s heart is working under different rules, much like an engine with a loud knock that needs a specialist to determine whether it is fixable, manageable, or progressive.

Until she is evaluated by a cardiologist, activity should be moderated rather than eliminated. Short, calm play is usually acceptable, but intense roughhousing that leads to sustained excitement, heavy exertion, or prolonged chasing is best limited for now, even if she initiates it. Puppies do not self-regulate well, especially confident ones. Watching for signs like excessive panting at rest, weakness, coughing, pale gums, or sudden collapse is important. If she were to collapse or appear faint, she should be kept calm and cool and seen by a veterinarian or emergency clinic immediately, as those signs suggest her heart may not be keeping up with her body’s demands.

Nutrition and hydration sound appropriate, and at this stage, there is no evidence-based supplement or ingredient that will correct a congenital heart defect, so avoiding unnecessary additions is wise. The most helpful things you can do right now are protecting her from overexertion, minimizing stress, and keeping that cardiology appointment a priority. Once a definitive diagnosis is made, you will have a much clearer picture of prognosis and options, and many dogs with early-detected heart disease can still enjoy a good quality of life with proper management.

    Best wishes,

    Dr. Paola

Help! How Do I Know if Giardia Has Cleared?

“Since tests for Giardia are unreliable and diarrhea can persist for weeks following elimination of the Giardia, how do I determine if a 3-day treatment with fenbendazole has cleared it? Is a repeat 3-day treatment in 7-10 days needed? – Karen

    Hi Karen,

You are correct that Giardia can be frustrating to assess, because both testing and stool quality can lag behind what is actually happening in the gut. It can help to understand what fenbendazole is actually doing to the parasite, because that explains why follow-up decisions are rarely straightforward. Fenbendazole interferes with the parasite’s ability to form microtubules, which are essential structures Giardia needs to absorb nutrients and divide. In simple terms, it starves and disables the organism rather than killing it instantly, which means clearance is gradual and depends on repeated exposure over time. This is why a short course can be effective, but also why lingering intestinal irritation does not necessarily mean live parasites are still present.

Because fenbendazole acts on the parasite’s biology rather than flushing it out, the intestine still has to recover after treatment. Giardia damages the surface of the gut that absorbs water and nutrients, so even once the organisms are gone, diarrhea can persist while that lining heals. That delayed recovery is what makes post-treatment testing and stool appearance difficult to interpret. For this reason, many veterinarians repeat a three-day course seven to ten days later, not because fenbendazole is weak, but because Giardia cysts can survive in the environment and reinfect the dog before the intestine has fully recovered.

The decision to repeat treatment is usually based on risk factors such as age, exposure to other dogs, and environmental contamination rather than stool quality alone. Careful hygiene, bathing at the end of treatment, and prompt feces removal are just as important as the medication itself. If signs persist beyond the expected healing window, it is important to widen the lens and consider other gastrointestinal contributors instead of assuming treatment failure. I hope this helps!

Help! I Struggle to Brush My Dogs Teeth!

“Are dental chews helpful? I find it hard to brush my Sammi’s teeth. – Henry

    Hi Henry,

Dental chews can be helpful, but it is important to think of them the same way we think about chewing sugar-free gum for people. They can support oral health, but they do not replace brushing. The primary benefit of dental chews comes from gentle mechanical abrasion against the tooth surface, which can help slow plaque accumulation and reduce the bacterial load in the mouth. Products that have been evaluated by independent veterinary dental organizations are the most reliable choice because they have demonstrated measurable reductions in plaque or calculus under controlled conditions. That said, chews mainly contact the chewing surfaces and the outer sides of the teeth, while periodontal disease often begins below the gumline, where chews cannot reach.

If brushing Sammi’s teeth feels challenging, you are not alone. Many dogs need time and gradual training to accept toothbrushing, much like children learning to tolerate it. Using positive reinforcement, starting with very brief sessions, and focusing on consistency rather than perfection can make brushing feel more achievable over time. Dr. Karyn’s step-by-step tips may be helpful. Even brushing just a few times a week provides significantly more protection than relying on chews alone.

For dogs that truly cannot tolerate brushing despite careful, patient training, a combination approach works best. This may include approved dental chews, appropriate dental diets when indicated, and regular veterinary oral examinations to monitor progression. Many dogs will also benefit from professional dental cleanings as part of a long-term oral health plan.

    Kind regards,

    Dr. Paola

    [ad_1]

    Shutterstock

Some dogs experience the world through their noses, processing trails and hidden details before their eyes catch up. For these breeds, scent is not just a sense but a guiding force shaping focus and purpose. Their ability to track, locate, and interpret smells feels almost magical to watch. These breeds fit this topic because scent work is built into their history and anatomy. Their noses have countless receptors and powerful scent-processing brains. Bred for tracking, they excel in work and enrichment that satisfies instincts.

  • Dog Hydration on the Go: What to Pack for Year-Round Walks, Hikes, and Travel with Your Pup | Animal Wellness Magazine

    [ad_1]

Want better ways to keep your dog hydrated on the go? Check out these dog hydration tips to help them drink more when you’re on the move!

Keeping your dog well-hydrated helps regulate their body temperature, supports joint and organ function, and prevents dangerous issues like heat exhaustion. When you’re traveling or exercising together, dog hydration is even more important. However, it can be challenging to make sure your dog drinks enough on the go. Here are some great tips for your adventures at any time of year!

Equipment That’ll Make On-the-Go Dog Hydration Easier

A few simple tools and tricks can make canine hydration a breeze when you’re out and about, whether you’re hiking, on the water, out in the back country, road tripping, or going on a journey:

    • Portable or collapsible bowl: Easy to pack, and your dog can drink anywhere
    • Saddlebag: A wearable pack for your dog that simplifies carrying extra water
    • Pet water bottle: Holds water, and the lid doubles as a bowl

    Tips to Encourage Water Consumption

Even though dogs need water to survive, they can still be picky about how and when they drink. And then add stress from something like travel, extreme temperatures, or exercise and you can have a situation where there’s an increased risk of dehydration. Use these tips to help your pup drink enough when you’re out and about:

    • Water additives or alternatives: Low-sodium broth, fruit juice, and liquid toppers can make drinking more appealing and supply additional nutrients.
    • Bring their bowl: Something that smells and feels like home can make them feel more relaxed.
    • Take regular breaks in shady spots: Stop every 20 to 30 minutes during exercise/summer activities or every two to three hours during a trip.
    • Use positive reinforcement: When your dog takes a drink, let them know what a good pup they are.
    • Keep it cool: Dogs typically prefer cool water to room temperature or ice water.
    • Try ice: Some dogs love ice, and it can help to keep them hydrated if it’s feasible to bring a small cooler with you.

    Watching for Signs of Dehydration

Dehydration can develop quickly during heat, travel, or exercise, even during the cooler months. Severe dehydration can become an emergency, so recognizing these signs early is essential:

    • Heavy panting
    • Dry or sticky gums
    • Sunken eyes
    • Lethargy
    • Loss of skin elasticity

If your dog shows signs of dehydration, offer fresh water right away and move them to a cool, shaded area. If symptoms don’t improve quickly—or if your dog seems weak, lethargic, or refuses to drink—contact your veterinarian immediately.

  • Love in the Wild: Soulmates of Londolozi – Londolozi Blog

    [ad_1]

There’s something magical about February in the African bush. While hearts and flowers are seen in every shop window around the world this month, out here in the wild, love doesn’t need chocolate or champagne; it’s written in movement, survival, and connection. The bush has its own way of celebrating devotion: in the pair that watches the sunrise together, in the shared vigilance in the dark, and in the quiet persistence of a bond that lasts far beyond a single season.

Here at Londolozi, the natural world reveals that the need to find a companion, a partner, a teammate, a lifelong supporter, is not solely human. Across the grasslands, rocky outcrops, and thicketed riverbeds, some of the animals we know and love form lasting partnerships that endure year after year. These are the soulmates of the wild, animals that, for much of their lives, choose one another again and again.

    What Is Monogamy in Nature?

When we talk about love in the wild, we’re really talking about monogamy, the biological and social strategy where a male and female form a long-lasting bond. In the animal kingdom, monogamy does not always mean romantic love like humans describe, but it does mean partnership: a shared territory, shared parenting, and often shared survival goals. Among mammals, true monogamy is relatively rare, making those couples that do form these bonds all the more remarkable.

Soulmates of Londolozi: Mammals That Pair Up

At Londolozi, several species exhibit patterns of long-term bonding that we can recognise as monogamous, pairs that stick together through thick and thin and all the seasons.

Black-backed Jackals — Lifelong Partners on the Plains

One of the most iconic examples of monogamy in our landscape is the black-backed jackal. These pairs often roam together throughout their territory, scent-marking, foraging, and defending their patch against rivals. Male and female jackals invest equally in keeping their home and pups safe, hunting as a team and teaching their young the rhythms of life in the bush. If one partner dies, the other may wander alone until it finds another — a reminder of the bond they shared.

    Kj Jackals

African Wild Dogs — A Partnership That Anchors the Pack

The African wild dog is one of Africa’s most socially cooperative carnivores. Within a pack, the alpha male and alpha female form the core breeding pair and usually pair for life. Their leadership and strong partnership help to hold the pack together, guiding hunting strategies, denning behaviour, and pup rearing. Their bond isn’t just about pair-bonding — it’s about family.

    Klipspringers — Rock-Dwelling Duos

High on rocky outcrops, klipspringers form steadfast pair bonds that last a lifetime. These small antelope are rarely seen apart — one perched sentinel while the other feeds, eyes locked on one another and on the surrounding terrain. Their survival depends on mutual trust and vigilance, and their bond is one of quiet cooperation. There is a clear synchrony to the way they move, a product of a long-standing bond that strengthens their ability to survive and succeed in their harsh environment.

A Klipspringer stands in the early morning sun against a Winter's sky by Rich Laburn

A Klipspringer stands in the early morning sun against a Winter’s sky

Steenbok — Bonded by Shared Space

Though small and often seen alone, steenbok are monogamous in a more subtle way. Rather than moving together as a constant pair, a male and female maintain exclusive, overlapping territories — a system known as spatial monogamy. By sharing space rather than proximity, both individuals benefit from reduced competition, familiar feeding areas, and reliable escape routes, offering clear survival advantages in a challenging landscape.

    Kc Steenbok M&f Npv 2023

A male and female steenbok stand side by side in the tall grass, embodying the close bond of this resilient species. Although it is very seldom that you see them standing so close together, they are thought to be monogamous, remaining together for extended periods and even forming lifelong bonds.

Love Takes Wing: Monogamy in Birds

While mammals provide some of the most striking examples of lifelong bonds here at Londolozi, birds are where monogamy truly flourishes. Many bird species form long-term pair bonds, returning to the same partner and nesting site year after year, sharing the responsibilities of incubation and chick-rearing. A prominent example in our skies is the Bateleur eagle, whose aerial elegance is matched by its enduring partnership with its mate.

    Why Form a Bond?

In the wild, forming a long-term partnership isn’t just poetic, it’s practical. Shared vigilance means extra eyes watching for danger. Cooperative parenting increases the chances of offspring surviving to adulthood. Joint territory defence can mean access to better resources. In challenging environments like ours, partnership becomes a tool for survival.

Love in the Wild, Lived Every Day

So as the world celebrates love with roses and candlelit dinners this February, take a moment to look out across the riverbanks, koppies, and plains of Londolozi. The language of love here is ancient and quiet, written in decades-old partnerships, in duos perched at sunset, and in the unspoken rhythm of shared life – a bond in which their survival depends on it

  • Review: Outward Hound Hide ‘n Slide by Nina Ottosson

    [ad_1]

The Outward Hound Hide ’n Slide is an interactive puzzle toy that really keeps dogs engaged and thinking. If you’re committed to providing enrichment that both mentally stimulates your dog and slows down meal time, this toy deserves a spot in your rotation.

I bought our Hide ‘n Slide at a thrift store years ago–and it’s now on its second generation of dog fun. It’s really durable and easy to clean, and it has long been a favorite enrichment toy with our dogs.

What Makes the Hide ’n Slide Special

The Hide ’n Slide puzzle is a treat-dispensing game with:

    • Sliding panels
    • Hidden compartments
    • Multiple treat locations

Your dog must move a flipper and slide a block out of the way to uncover hidden treats or kibble tucked under the grooves. It’s designed to build on a dog’s natural curiosity, encouraging them to use nose, paws, and brains all at once.

This toy sits in the beginner-to-intermediate level of difficulty — perfect for pups who are new to puzzles or seasoned learners who need a fun challenge. I used this toy with Isla when she was just a few months old and she loved it; our cat Lucky also really enjoys this toy.

Instead of just burning physical energy, your dog gets to:

    • Practice patience and focus
    • Use scent work to find hidden rewards, whether that’s part of his daily food or treats
    • Engage in purposeful exploration rather than repetitive motion like in a game of fetch
    • Experience a sense of accomplishment once the puzzle is solved

Teaching Your Dog to Enjoy the Puzzle

Not every dog immediately “gets” a puzzle — but most will once they’re introduced to it in the right way.

    Start with Easy Wins

    • Add treats to the most obvious places–on top of the flippers and on the rows between the flippers and the sliding blocks.
    • Don’t add treats inside the raised sliding blocks just yet; these are the hardest for the dog to solve since they require sliding over the recessed area and then back again to access the treat.
    • Reward interest — even just sniffing or touching the toy.
    • Use high-value treats that are enticing and smell strong. You can later use the puzzle to feed part of your dog’s daily kibble but by using high-value, strong smelling treats, you’ll be enticing your dog to keep trying.
    • If you need to simplify the puzzle more, some of the flippers are removable. Just flip the toy over and look for the fastener (see photo below); give it a squeeze to temporarily remove a flipper.

    Show Them How

    • Slide a flipper and a block yourself and reveal a treat.
    • Use verbal praise (e.g., “Yes!”) each time your dog investigates.
    • If your dog pushes a slider or paws at a compartment, cheer them on — positive reinforcement helps build confidence.

How to Make the Puzzle More Difficult

Once your dog masters the basics, you can increase the difficulty level several ways:

Add treats inside the sliding blocks. This will require your dog to move the flipper then move the block over the recessed area–then move the block back away from the recessed area–before the treat is accessible. I use strongly scented treats in the blocks to help motivate our dogs.

Cut up a toilet paper center role to make additional blocks. I learned this fun tip on the Nina Ottosson Instagram page. (If you’re not already following her, you’ll find fun tips for her toys as well as easy DIY enrichment games, too!)

Wrap treats in a small bit of paper. This tip is not for dogs who will eat anything that’s ever touched food (Isla, I’m looking at you!) but other dogs might enjoy additional challenge by wrapping the treat in a small bit of tissue paper, paper towel or coffee filter.

Elevate the treat. The Hide ‘n Slide has rubber feet so it will stay fairly sturdy even when you elevate it, such as on a dog table or platform. This makes your dog solve the puzzle using his nose (and it’s a good tip for dogs who are just too rough on puzzles!)

If you are interested in a more difficult puzzle that’s very similar, check out our review on the Outward Hound Dog Worker.

Pros of the Hide ’n Slide

    • Great for mental enrichment and slowing down fast eaters
    • I love that it is all self-contained; there are no separate pieces to get lost or get carried away by your dog!
    • It has a simple design that many dogs understand quickly but has the ability to be made more difficult.
    • Durable even when pawed at!
    • Versatile — works with kibble or treats.
    • Food-safe
    • PVC free, BPA free, lead free and phthalate free

    Cons to Consider

    • Some dogs may need guided help at first–but think of it as a bonding experience.
    • Just like your dog’s bowl, you will need to clean the toy! I find it easy to clean and just use a regular dish scrub brush then flip it over to drain and dry.

    Final Verdict

The Outward Hound Hide ’n Slide dog puzzle is a well-designed, engaging, and rewarding puzzle that provides real enrichment for your dog. Whether you’re teaching your pup to think more independently or trying to slow down meal time, this puzzle delivers satisfaction for both dog and owner. As I said, it’s a heavy-duty toy and ours has been used for many, many hours with no loss of quality. Barli and Isla give it a big paws up!

  • Review: Outward Hound Dog Worker by Nina Ottosson

    [ad_1]

If you’re looking for a dog toy that really makes your pup think, the Outward Hound Nina Ottosson Dog Worker puzzle is a real challenge. This interactive puzzle engages your dog’s brain in ways simple chew toys and fetch balls never can — and that matters for your dog’s well-being.

Dogs can use enrichment toys like the Dog Walker to engage their natural instincts to search, sniff, problem-solve, and forage. You can use the toy to prolong the fun of meal time or treat time.

I recently purchased a Dog Worker to try out with Barli and Isla. I already have (and love) the very similar looking Hide ‘n Slide toy but I wanted to increase the difficulty level. The Dog Worker is a Level Three (out of four) difficulty level while the Hide ‘n Slide is a Level Two.

    Here’s how it works:

    • You’ll drop small treats, kibble or other high-value (dry) treats into the puzzle.
    • Your dog will push flippers to allow blocks to slide, unveiling recessed compartments where treats are hidden.
    • Your dog can spin the center (removable) wheel to open and close the tracks.

Let’s look at how you can use the Dog Worker with your dog–and some ways to make it easier or more difficult as your dog gets more experienced!

The Nina Ottosson Line of Toys

Nina Ottosson is a Swedish designer and the creator of one of the most well-known lines of interactive dog (and cat) puzzle toys on the market, sold by Outward Hound. She started developing puzzle games for dogs decades ago, originally to mentally stimulate her own dogs in fun, engaging ways — and those early designs eventually grew into an entire category of brain-challenging enrichment toys.

Her puzzles require dogs to lift, slide, spin, or uncover hidden treats, tapping into instinctive behaviors like searching and foraging. This makes the challenge feel meaningful rather than random.

Ottosson’s central philosophy is that dogs need both physical and mental activity — “the dog has four legs and one head, and all five need activity in different ways.”

How to Use the Dog Worker

If your dog is new to puzzles, you might need to sit with your dog and show him how to retrieve the treats the first few times. And that’s a big part of enrichment: creating an experience you and your dog can enjoy together!

Not all dogs instantly understand how puzzles work — especially if they’ve never had interactive toys before. Here are some ways to set your pup up for success:

    Start with Introductions

    • Place high-value treats partially visible so they see how it works. Later you can use the toy to feed a portion of your dog’s daily kibble but, during this introductory phase, use strong-smelling treats to motivate your dog.
    • Remove the center wheel. Flip the puzzle over and squeeze the center to release the wheel. You can return it for added difficulty later when your dog needs more challenge.
    • Don’t put treats inside the moving blocks just yet. Those are the toughest to solve since they have to be moved over the recessed areas then moved out again to unveil the treat.
    • Let your dog see you move the puzzle pieces and unveil some treats.
    • Celebrate when your dog nudges or paws a piece — even if it’s accidental!

Gradually increase the complexity only when your dog is confidently solving the easier version.

    Increase the Difficulty Level

Once your dog gets the hang of it, you can ramp up the challenge!

Add the Center Wheel. The wheel pops back into the puzzle and adds much more difficulty because the dog must line up the opening in the wheel with the block to then allow the recessed area to be unveiled.

Partially Cover Treats. If your dog doesn’t eat paper, you can wrap treats in thin paper (a paper towel or coffee filter) and put that into the recessed areas. Skip this tip if your dog eats paper!

Elevate the Puzzle. If your dog is speedy, move the puzzle to an elevated position like a dog table so your dog works the puzzle pieces with his nose, not his paws. This is also a great trick if your dog is being a little too rough with the puzzle!

Add More Challenges to Sliding. Make it tougher for your dog to slide the blocks by cutting up pieces of paper towel or toilet paper rolls and standing them in the channels. Your dog will need to remove these first before sliding the blocks.

Add Small Treats to the Sliding Blocks. The sliding blocks have to be positioned over the recessed areas–then moved back again–for the treat to be accessible.

How Does This Compare to the Hide ‘N Slide?

If you’re familiar with the many Nina Ottosson toys, you may have seen (or already have) the Hide ‘n Slide, a very similar looking toy. I have had one for several years; I bought it used at a thrift store and it’s now on it’s second generation of dog play and still going strong!

The Hide ‘n Slide is considered a Level 2 or Intermediate puzzle, although you can increase the difficulty level of it and make it a Level 3 like the Dog Worker.

The Hide ‘n Slide doesn’t have the center wheel which makes the difficulty lower, although you can use some of the same tricks like putting treats inside the blocks or adding additional challenges such as pieces of toilet paper roll.

    Pros

    • A one-piece puzzle (unless you remove the center wheel). I love those because it’s easier to clean (and keeps me from losing any pieces!)
    • Durable even when pawed.
    • Versatile — works with kibble or treats.
    • Food-safe.
    • PVC free, BPA free, lead free and phthalate free.

    Cons to Consider

    • The wheel is a bit difficult to remove the first time. You’ll squeeze the back of the puzzle to release the wheel then it just pops back into place. On the plus side, this keeps your dog from removing the wheel himself!
    • The wheel does really increase the difficulty level (and frustration level for your dog) so you need to monitor the toy and remove the wheel if you see your dog having too much difficulty.
    • Some dogs may need your help at first–but think of it as a bonding experience.

  • Garden ponds provide vital habitats – and a revival is under way in Britain | Focusing on Wildlife

    [ad_1]

Afew years ago I created a little pond in my back garden. It’s barely bigger than a paving slab, but since the pond has been in place we have had a garden teeming with frogs, hedgehogs have taken up residence and bird life has abounded.

Not only do humble ponds like this give nature a boost; they also help to buffer climate extremes.

In recent decades, Britain’s ponds have been disappearing, with research revealing that more than half of our dense network of ponds has been lost since the 1900s.

Lucy Clarke and colleagues found that 58% of ponds in the Severn Vale region of the UK had been lost since the 1900s, with the average distance between ponds increasing by 25 metres over that time.

Similar trends can be seen worldwide, with intensive agriculture and urbanisation obliterating these seemingly insignificant bodies of water.

But now a pond revival is under way, with even tiny ponds such as mine helping to create biodiversity hotspots, plus provide cooling during heatwaves and help to slow the flow of water during heavy rains, reducing pressure on our overloaded drains and recharging parched groundwater reservoirs.

Previously overlooked, ponds large and small are starting to be recognised as a vital habitat and a small but mighty climate mitigation tool.

This article by Kate Ravilious was first published by The Guardian on 4 December 2025. Lead Image: Britain’s ponds have been disappearing in recent decades, with research revealing that more than half of our dense network of ponds has been lost since the 1900s.

8 Actually Useful Tips for Finding Deals on Black Friday for Your Dog

    1. Follow Niche Pet Retailers on Social Media

Large retailers like Amazon and Petco aren’t the only ones with great deals. Smaller pet boutiques often post exclusive Black Friday discounts and flash sales on their social media accounts. Follow your favorite niche stores on Instagram or Facebook and turn on notifications to catch limited-time offers.

    2. Subscribe to Pet-Specific Email Newsletters

Many pet brands and stores send early access Black Friday deals to their email subscribers. Sign up for newsletters from premium brands like Chewy, Wild One, or The Farmer’s Dog. They often provide exclusive discount codes not available to the general public.

    3. Use Price Trackers for High-Ticket Items

If you’re eyeing an expensive item like a smart dog collar, pet camera, or luxury bed, use price tracking tools like CamelCamelCamel for Amazon or Honey to monitor historical prices. This ensures you’re getting an actual deal and not just a cleverly marketed discount.

    4. Bundle Deals for Dog Owners

Many brands offer bundle deals that combine dog products with human items. For instance, some retailers might pair cozy dog blankets with matching human throws or a dog-themed mug with gourmet treats. These bundles often provide better value than buying items separately.

    5. Shop for Seasonal Clearance Items

Look for discounted fall or holiday-themed items that are still functional year-round. For example, a pumpkin-shaped toy or winter coat for dogs may go on deep discount, but your dog won’t care if it’s not the latest “season.” These deals can save you a lot on practical items.

    6. Leverage Retailer Rewards Programs

Join loyalty programs at pet stores or retailers that carry pet products before Black Friday. Many, like Petco’s Pals Rewards or Chewy’s Autoship program, offer additional discounts or points you can redeem on Black Friday purchases for even more savings.

    7. Search Beyond Pet Stores

Don’t limit your hunt to pet-specific retailers. General stores like Costco, Target, and even TJ Maxx often stock quality pet products and gifts for dog lovers during Black Friday at steep discounts. Check for unexpected deals like gourmet treats or plush beds.

    8. Wait for Cyber Monday for High-Tech Pet Gadgets

If you’re shopping for gadgets like pet cameras, automatic feeders, or GPS trackers, consider waiting until Cyber Monday. Many tech-focused deals are better on this day, and retailers may bundle accessories with the device at a discounted rate.

By applying these tips, you’ll not only find unique and practical deals for your pup but also save big without falling for the hype of standard sales gimmicks!
