Countries agreed Wednesday to new limits on the international trade in African hornbills. The spectacular birds, which play a key role in African forest ecosystems, are threatened by the growing global sale of hornbill parts.

The new restrictions were agreed to at a meeting of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species now underway in Uzbekistan. A coalition of African states had proposed listing seven species of African hornbill under Appendix II of the convention, a move intended to lead to greater regulation and monitoring of the international hornbill trade, with the aim of ensuring the birds’ continued survival in the wild.

The new protection comes after reporting from Yale Environment 360 detailed the burgeoning global trade in African hornbill skulls and beaks, as well as stuffed and live birds. The e360 report, which was distributed to delegates at the CITES meeting, revealed a surge in online listings and international shipments, with poachers in some regions reporting that growing interest from foreign buyers is leading to increased hunting of hornbills.

“Listing African hornbills in CITES Appendix II is a decisive step toward safeguarding these iconic birds,” said Alex Berryman of BirdLife International, a conservation group. The measure, he said “marks a meaningful commitment by countries to the long-term conservation of Africa’s hornbills.”

Every country where these birds naturally occur reportedly voted in favor of the CITES measure, as did the U.S. and E.U., which are major destinations for hornbill parts. No countries opposed it.

“Globally, the illegal and unsustainable trade in birds is accelerating, threatening more species every year,” said Chris R. Shepherd, of the Center for Biological Diversity. “Without international regulations and controls, there are simply no mechanisms to confront the organized criminal networks driving this crisis.”

Conservationists cheered the new measure, noting that greater limits on the trade of African hornbills may also bolster protections for Asian species of the bird. Though Asian hornbills are already listed under CITES, their skulls and feathers can resemble African species, complicating enforcement.

I’ll admit, when I saw Nic’s latest post about the mating chameleons, I felt a familiar twinge of professional jealousy. Having spent more than nine years seeking out incredible moments to capture out here, you often don’t really know what your “bucket-list” sightings are. Well, I mean, of course, there are the big ones, such as lions fighting, a cub-carry, successful hunts, but smaller, somewhat more inconspicuous sightings only rear their heads in the moment, or when you hear of something that someone else has seen.

So, yay for Nic that he saw these two chameleons mating, but thanks to a great comment on his blog,

“Is the gender of the young affected by the incubation temperature?”

I thought it would be a great opportunity to delve into one of the most incredible “manual overrides” in the reptile world.

Nature’s Thermostat

In many reptiles, such as crocodiles and various tortoises and turtles, the sex of hatchlings is determined by nest temperature during a critical incubation window. This is known as Temperature-dependent Sex Determination (TSD).

Essentially, if the soil where the female carefully buries her eggs stays within a specific “Goldilocks” range, you get a balanced mix. If things swing too hot or too cold during that wait underground, the brood could skew heavily toward one gender. Take crocodiles, for example, higher temperatures (around 31- 32 °C or 88 °F) speed up development and tend to produce males, while lower temperatures produce females.

Whereas with leopard tortoises, eggs typically take between 8 and 15 months (roughly 240 to 460 days) to hatch, making them one of the longest-incubating tortoise species. Hatching time is heavily influenced by temperature and, in the wild, often requires rain to soften the soil.

However, temperature has the opposite effect to that of crocodiles; warmer temperatures (31–34°C) tend to produce females, while cooler temperatures (26–31°C) produce males.

For the flap-necked chameleons (Chamaeleo dilepis), the science is a bit more nuanced—or perhaps, more rigid. While their reptilian cousins are playing a game of “climate-controlled” gender reveals, chameleons generally stick to Genotypic Sex Determination (GSD).

Essentially, the sex of those tiny, future emerald-green masters of disguise is locked in at the moment of conception. No matter how much the African sun bakes the soil or how many cooling thunderstorms roll through the Sabi Sands during that long 9-to-12-month incubation, the chromosomal blueprint is already set. They aren’t waiting for a thermometer to tell them who they are; they arrive with their identity already hard-coded.

The “Dead” Mother and the Resurrection Myth

This brings me back to a topic I’ve explored before: the heavy superstitions that follow these creatures. There is a persistent belief in many local cultures that chameleons are immortal or, more morbidly, that they are “born from the bones of the dead.”

While I’m usually the first to debunk a myth with a dry “actually…”, the biological reality here is admittedly quite metal.

As Nic’s sighting reminded us, the mating process is just the beginning of a high-stakes gamble. Once the female is ready to lay, she faces a Herculean task. She digs a burrow roughly 20cm deep—a massive undertaking for a creature of her size. She then deposits between 25 and 60 eggs in painstaking layers, a process that can take over 24 hours of sheer physical exertion

Often, this can be where the story ends for her. The sheer exhaustion of the “birthing” process, combined with her vulnerability to predators while on the ground, means the mother frequently doesn’t survive much longer.

By the time those eggs hatch nearly a year later, the mother’s body has often decayed to a skeleton right above the nest. When those 50-odd tiny, perfect replicas finally tunnel out of the earth, they often scramble through the ribcage of their mother to reach the surface. To an observer a thousand years ago, it looked exactly like the bones were transforming into new life.

It’s easy to get caught up in the “Big Five” drama, the lions on a kill or a leopard in a marula tree. But the life cycle of a chameleon is a grit-and-glory story that rivals any apex predator.
Nic’s sighting wasn’t just a “lucky spot.” It was a glimpse into a survival strategy that has remained unchanged for millions of years. It’s a reminder that even the slowest among us are often running the hardest race.

• Dog food and treats. Be sure to measure the amount of food you are using and subtract this from your dog’s daily diet.

You can even rotate materials to keep it novel.

But remember: enrichment isn’t about making it frustrating. If your dog gives up and walks away, you’ve gone too far.

Safety and Supervision

Always supervise snuffle box sessions, particularly if your dog:

• Shreds cardboard
• Eats paper
• Guards food
• Is a strong chewer

If your dog begins eating materials, calmly remove the box and try again later with sturdier fillers or consider a different enrichment activity

For multi-dog households, offer separate boxes in separate spaces to prevent tension.

When Playtime Is Over

When playtime is over, your job is to pick up the snuffle box (and, yes, any mess that it has produced) and PUT IT AWAY.

“I had just begun to lose hope,” Muse later shared. “[But then] I heard Devin giggling and saying, ‘What a smart boy.’”

The little survivor had found shelter inside a rotting log. As rain battered the swamp, he had squeezed himself into the hollow wood to stay dry. Now, his small face peeked through the broken opening, eyes searching the strangers who had come back for him.

A Fragile Body, A Fighting Spirit

Relief flooded Muse at the sight of him. But as they gently pulled apart the soft wood to free him, that relief quickly mixed with heartbreak.

Up close, his condition was devastating. His body was painfully thin. Every rib was visible beneath his fur. A large wound marked his back leg, raw and swollen. It was clear he had been suffering for some time.

And yet, when their eyes met, his tail began to thump.

Despite the pain. Despite the hunger. Despite the storm.

That small gesture said everything. He still wanted to trust.

Muse had not come prepared with blankets or supplies. The rescue had unfolded too quickly. Without hesitation, she wrapped the trembling dog in her own jacket. Tucked against her chest, he relaxed for the first time. His tense body softened. For the first time in what may have been weeks, he felt warmth and safety.

Muse named him Devin, in honor of the man who refused to look away.

At the veterinary clinic, the full extent of his injuries became clearer. Doctors discovered bullet fragments lodged in his injured leg, suggesting he may have been shot before being left behind. The wound was cleaned and treated. He was started on antibiotics and pain medication to ease his suffering.

Even through examinations and bandage changes, Devin remained gentle. His caregivers noted how often his tail wagged. How he leaned into soft touches. How he seemed grateful simply to be indoors, surrounded by kindness instead of danger.

Muse soon arranged for Devin’s transfer to Villalobos Rescue Center, where he could continue healing in a supportive environment.

Today, his leg is still bandaged. His recovery is ongoing. But his spirit shines brighter than ever. Staff describe him as endlessly cheerful, a little dog who greets each day with hope rather than fear.

After surviving hunger, injury, and a violent storm in the lonely bayou, Devin now rests among friends. He is gaining strength. He is learning that hands can heal instead of harm.

And soon, when his body has fully healed, he will be ready to meet the family who will give him the safe and loving life he has always deserved.

An Australian zoo credited with saving 7 native species from extinction aims to continue its vital work by rewilding a 3,050-acre tract of farmland.

The aim of planting a Box-Gum tree fores across the cleared land that would act as a corridor to help connect existing wildlife habitats.

The Taronga Zoo Conservation Society (TZCS) then plans to release platypus, koalas, spotted quols, and the Endangered regent honeyeater bird.

The farmland can be found on the Nandewar Range, part of the Australian continent’s Great Dividing Range, in New South Wales. It’s about 100-times bigger than the zoo the society maintains in the Sydney Harbor.

The TZCS estimates that around 1 million seedlings will be needed to return native tree cover, after which they suspect some species will come back quickly.

CEO Cameron Kerr told ABC News AU that experts would then monitor the manner in which these native species recolonize the area, and decide how to manage the species that would be expected to need a decade or more to fully reclaim their ancestral territory.

“What we are going to do is first of all establish the habitat and get the ecosystem looking after itself so that pest management and weed management will decline over time as the habitat becomes healthy,” Mr. Kerr said.

“At the right time we will assess what wildlife is coming in from outside and what wildlife we need to re-introduce.”

TZCS has a large body of experience in reintroducing native species. ABC claims that 60,000 animals, from tadpoles to larger mammals like koalas, have been bred, reared, and released through the society’s 16 targeted breeding programs.

At the same time, rewilding landscapes will be a first for the zoo, and the Nandewar Rangeland is the only such project since it transformed 300 acres into the Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo.

Directors of the program are aware that the landscape isn’t free of invasive predatory animals like foxes and pigs, so feral animal control will have to be incorporated into plans. Kerr said that Australia can no longer rely on the forest landscapes it has left to protect native, threatened wildlife.

The nation has to actively start to restore native forests if citizens want the continent’s panoply of curious, native animals to survive long into the future.
