    Families and couples will love the Westgate Smoky Mountain Resort in Gatlinburg with it’s excellent restaurant, indoor waterpark, spa, and proximity to the Smokies.

    Kristina was invited to take her kids for a few days to explore all the resort has to offer. Thank you to the Westgate Smoky Mountain Resort for hosting us and for exceptional hospitality.

    Our Review of Westgate Smoky Mountain Resort

    The Westgate Smoky Mountain Resort in Gatlinburg is part of the Westgate Resort family, which has properties in Orlando, Las Vegas, Miami, Daytona Beach, Myrtle Beach, and several other popular locations in addition to this Gatlinburg indoor waterpark hotel.

    They are top-notch resorts that have plenty of entertainment for both families and couples who want to relax and have fun. They also take great pride in providing excellent dining, spa amenities, and family-friendly activities and events to guests. 

    You Don’t Have to Leave the Resort to Have Fun

    We were thrilled to stay at the Westgate Smoky Mountain Resort in Gatlinburg, just outside of the main drag and less than ten minutes from both Pigeon Forge and the perfect backdrop of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. But really, if you wanted to just drive there, park your car, and enjoy the resort amenities without ever getting back in your car until it was time to go home, you could absolutely do that.

    The resort has enough things to do to keep your entire family entertained easily for a weekend or more without ever leaving the property. 

    Amazing Views

    The Westgate Smokies is enormous and if you don’t have a room on the base level where the indoor waterpark and restaurant is located, you’ll be up the mountain with amazing views of downtown Gatlinburg and the majestic Smokies right outside your doorstep.

    And the views are just breathtaking. The resort looks over to Anakeesta, the mountaintop village that we’ve often written about and just love, which is framed by Clingmans Dome, the highest point in the park, and Mt. LeConte, which is nearly as high.

    We could even see the snow-covered peak of Clingmans Dome! The clouds roll in and out of the mountains, creating those postcard-perfect photos that you can’t even believe exist in real life. 

    Shuttles & a Trolley are Available

    Because the resort is so large, they have constant shuttles running to get you where you want to go and will even pick you up if you start walking back and forth to your room. The staff is very friendly and eager to please. 

    If you feel the need to leave the resort, you can jump on the Gatlinburg trolley, which has a stop right at the resort entrance. That will take you into town for a minimal fee. 

    How much does it cost to book a room?

    The Westgate Smokies offers studio rooms up to five bedroom villas. Prices vary according to room type and season. As of this writing, a studio in January ran about $105/night and a one-bedroom was $130/night. In April, those same rooms are currently going for $185 and $200, respectively.  July and October are typically the busiest and more costly seasons. 

    If you’re looking to visit, be sure to go to the Gatlinburg hotel deals, as they actually have more than one resort in the area.

    Wild Bear Falls Water Park

    For families, the main draw of the Westgate Smoky Mountain Resort is the indoor waterpark, Wild Bear Falls Water Park. I kept this part a secret from my kids when we went, only telling them to bring their swimsuits. It was worth it to see their utter amazement when we walked in. They were speechless, which, for kids, is quite incredible. 

    The waterpark is huge, more than 60,000 square feet, and is nice and warm. It looks like a giant greenhouse with a big glass ceiling and glass walls. Parents or caregivers need to be in the water with their kids so be prepared to join in on the fun. 

    Zero-Entry Pool and Playground

    There is a zero-entry pool area with two slides that is perfect for smaller children. There is a big playground in the middle of the waterpark that pours gallons and gallons of water on kids as they slip down wet slides and play in the foot-deep pool.

    A bigger pool for older kids has basketball hoops in the center and is the deepest at four-and-a-half feet. Next to that pool is a deliciously steamy hot tub. Adults seemed to gravitate over there. 

    Lazy River

    My kids loved the lazy river, which was only two-and-a-half feet deep and warm. You cruised around the park in a tube and could get out to go on one of two water slides.

    Water Slides

    Guests need to be 48 inches tall to ride the water slides. Tubes are needed for the red water slide, which is half open to the ceiling until the very end when you go through a short tunnel.

    The yellow one is body-only and is totally enclosed. I preferred the red one best and my oldest went on it several times by herself. 

    Westgate Smokies

    There’s also a very warm hot tub near the water slides that opens to the outdoors, which feels really nice in the cool air. 

    Locker Rooms

    Locker rooms are on-site with showers and there are plenty of towels available for guests to use free of charge. Paid lockers are available if you want to store your backpack with your phone or other valuables. 

    How Crowded was Wild Bear Falls Waterpark?

    We went to the waterpark both on a weekday and weekend. It was more crowded on the weekend than on the weekday but still had plenty of space to not feel like people were close to you.

    How much does it cost?

    The waterpark is open daily but check the schedule ahead of time. Rates are $29.95/single day admission,  $53.85/two-day admission, and $84.75/three day admission. Children three and under are free.

    Are day passes available?

    Even if you’re not staying at the resort, you can go and enjoy the waterpark as they offer day passes.

    What is there to do at the Westgate Smokies Resort?

    We (myself and two kids, ages 9 and 6) stayed at the Westgate Smokies for three nights and nearly four days and didn’t get to do half of the things the resort offers just because we ran out of time. They have that many things to do. 

    Outdoor Pools with Views

    There are two outdoor pools, including an infinity pool at the top of the mountain. I saw that on the map and decided to check it out and am so happy we did because it was amazing. The view up there was insane and the infinity pool was perfect and warm. There’s a hot tub there as well.

    Towels are provided and during the warmer months, they have a bar. It’s completely picturesque. 

    Right below the infinity pool is an inviting firepit that overlooks the mountains. It was quite the place to get warm after our dip in the water and I could have looked at those mountains forever.

    Playground, Mini-Golf and a Zip-Line

    A playground for kids is halfway up the mountain and right near one of the shuttle stops so you can stop there and play or just play while you wait for your ride. There is a mini-golf course and a zip line next to the infinity pool. Guests need to weigh at least 75 pounds for the zip line, which my youngest didn’t quite reach so we had to skip that one. Next time!

    Fitness Center, Snack Bar, and Activities

    A fitness center overlooks the waterpark and a snack bar also is at the same location as the waterpark. The resort also has a huge list of activities for families and their kids like archery, ornament making, survival courses, guided hikes, ghost tours, and free movie nights. Again, we just ran out of time to do any of these because we were so busy having fun doing other things there. 

    Spa

    If I had my husband with us on this trip, I would have taken advantage of a spa treatment because how amazing does that sound, right? They have everything from massages to luxury pedicures to hot stone treatments. 

    Washer and Dryer

    Every floor also has a free washer and dryer, which we definitely used. It was especially convenient to dry our swimsuits after going to the waterpark and pool. 

    Kitchens and Kitchenettes

    The rooms at the resort are spacious and some of them have kitchens or kitchenettes. Whenever we travel, I always look for this feature because it saves us so much money when it comes to not having to eat out at every meal if we can make some of our food at the hotel.

    Yet you may not want to cook when you try the restaurant on-site, Southern Comfort. 

    Southern Comfort Restaurant

    Southern Comfort opened a few years ago at the Westgate Smokies that serves southern cuisine with a Lowcountry, Cajun twist. We sampled several dishes at the restaurant and each was better than the last. 

    The chef at Southern Comfort used to work at the Biltmore and her food was incredible. It was flavorful with just the right amount of spice that even my kids, who aren’t into anything with spicy flavors, enjoyed it.

    One of their favorite dishes was the Nashville hot chicken and biscuit that we had for breakfast one morning. I was shocked. It was like their little palettes were changing right before my eyes. 

    Southern Comfort

    This is how I can best describe every dish we had: it was so obviously made with love. You could taste it. I don’t mean that mushy romantic love. This was a love of food, of ingredients, and a kind of pride in the dish that the chef was serving to guests. 

    We had everything from Egg Nog French Toast (as good as it sounds), Blackened Catfish, Pulled Pork with Sweet Potato Cakes, Southern Fried Chicken, Deviled Eggs with Spicy Pickle, Fried Green Tomatoes, Mac & Cheese, and my favorite, a Cajun Gumbo.

    Kids’ Meals

    The kids’ meals are also tasty. My oldest daughter got a cheeseburger and fries one night and I kept stealing her curly fries when she wasn’t looking. They were perfectly crispy and salty and hot.

    Dessert

    On our first night there, the general manager Crystal, told us about their s’mores dessert that has marshmallows, graham crackers, chocolate, and peanut butter cups. I had to get that the last night we were there and it didn’t disappoint. We managed not to burn the place down, which was a success. 

    Helpful Staff

    The entire staff was so kind and helpful. They not only talked to us about the recent opening of the restaurant but also gave us some tips on places to explore in the area. 

    Cozy Decor

    And the decor of the restaurant keeps with the whole cozy cabin theme of the resort with high ceilings, a log cabin feeling indoors with a large fireplace, and candlelit tables. 

    Make a Reservation

    Southern Comfort is open to both guests and the general public but definitely make a reservation if you want to enjoy a meal there. Weekends can have a long wait. Word is getting out just how delicious this place is.

    Marketplace & Starbucks

    Lastly, there is a marketplace and Starbucks at the resort, which is so convenient if you want to grab breakfast and coffee on the go if you’re heading to the National Park for a drive or hike. I definitely made use of those when we were there. 

    Other Local Attractions in Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge

    Kidding Around readers know how much we love Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, and the Smokies as we have many stories on things to do in the area. Additionally, the Westgate Smokies has these 51 things to do in Gatlinburg, most of which are within a quick jaunt from the resort. Yet every time we go, we always discover something new. 

    Anakeesta

    Even after going to Anakeesta several times, we’ve never been during Christmastime, which was a special treat. Lights are strung so beautifully up on the mountain village and the new restaurant is now open (make reservations as the waits are long). We finally got to watch one of their outdoor movies for a bit, which my kids really enjoyed. Elf was playing and they had never seen it before and thought it was hilarious. 

    Anakeesta

    Ole Smoky Moonshine

    I got to do a special moonshine tasting as well this trip at the state’s oldest distillery, Ole Smoky Moonshine, right in the heart of Gatlinburg. I’m not a big straight liquor drinker but it was a lot of fun learning about the history of the distillery and tasting their surprisingly delicious offerings. The White Lightening, the straight up moonshine, was quite the kicker.

    The others were a lot less of a punch in your face and I loved the peanut butter chocolate one, which hardly tasted like liquor at all (could be dangerous, right?). 

    The distillery is America’s most visited and you can sample several moonshines for $5. The samples are thankfully tiny since the alcohol content is so high.

    Their moonshine making process is open to the public and you can see how it’s made so if you happen to be homeschooling your kids, that’s a science lesson right there.

    Great Smoky Mountain National Park

    And of course, the Great Smoky Mountain National Park is just minutes from the resort. I love this park for its beauty, its miles upon miles of trails, and its fascinating history. The Westgate sent us on a short hike to the Noah Oglesby cabin with a guide and it was so interesting. Be sure to get your parking pass ($5/day, $15/week, $40/year) from the National Park.

    Cabin

    The trailhead was just 15 minutes from the resort and we learned all kinds of history about the family with nine kids who lived there and farmed the area.

    My kids soaked up all the information and loved learning about the environment and different things to look for on hikes like twin trees, quartz, and woodpecker restaurants, which looked like lines of holes circling trees.

    Virtual Learning & Homeschooling at Westgate Smokies

    For families who are homeschooling or doing virtual school, taking a trip to Westgate Smokies is ideal because there are plenty of opportunities to learn about different subjects while getting homework done online at the resort and then playing at the waterpark or enjoying other amenities offered. 

    It’s a nice change of scenery that could help give everyone a break while still making sure the work that needs to get done happens.

    Searching for “live nativity near me”? We’ve pulled together a list of nearby live nativity events to visit this season near Greenville, SC. However you choose to experience the live nativity, we hope you have fun!  And if you know of any live nativities not on this list, please let us know with a comment below.

    Christmas at the LibraryBilly Graham Library (December 1st-23rd, 2023)
    Live nativity hours are Monday through Thursday 5 pm to 9 pm and Friday through Saturday 5 pm to 10 pm. Reservations are required to attend. The live nativity and story time are both free. Carriage rides are available for a fee ($6 for children and $12 for adults). Christmas dinner is available on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays in December. Reservations for dinner are recommended.

    North Anderson Baptist Church (November 30 – December 2, 2023, 6:30-8:30 pm nightly)
    This is a drive-through live nativity at North Anderson Baptist Church. It’s free to go. Address is 2308 N. Main Street, Anderson.

    Experience the Stable of Bethlehem at Famoda Farm (December 21-23, 2023 at 6, 7, and 8 pm)
    Walk amongst the animals and the stable of Bethlehem and watch Joseph and Mary process to the stable from a large barn. Indoor seating is available but this event can be crowded so people will also be able to stand outside and watch. Park is $10/car and $25/vans. Hot chocolate will be sold on site.

    Happy Hooves’ Christmas at the Barn (December 10, 2023 2-5 pm)
    This fundraiser at Eden Farms in Marietta benefits the Happy Hooves Therapeutic Equestrian Center. For $10 per person online ($15 at the door), guests can enjoy activities like “reindeer” horse and pony rides, a visit with Santa, a nativity scene and Christmas music, arts and crafts, a “peeplechase” playground for kids, a candy cane garden, and much more. Lunch, baked goods, and gifts will also be for sale.

    St. James Live Drive-thru Nativity (December 2, 2023, 6:30-8 pm)
    View the manger scene complete with animals from your car. St. James UMC, 213 N. Lanford Road, Spartanburg, SC. The nativity will be in the front of the church, off Savoy Street.

    Live Nativity at Holly Springs Baptist Church (December 3, 2023 at 5 pm)

    “An Open Mind Leads to Amazing Opportunities and People Better Than You Imagined.”

    My senior year in high school was one of my life’s most joyful, exciting — but stressful — periods. I am a huge planner and pride myself on working hard to achieve my goals. While these qualities are often beneficial, they can make tasks like narrowing down a college list and filling out applications challenging. On top of this, I have ADHD and dyslexia. Though I am very confident in my abilities, adapting to new environments, people, and expectations often requires a steep learning curve and involves a few mishaps.

    Throughout the college application process, I learned the importance of surrounding myself with people and environments that set me up for success. Here’s more advice for neurodivergent students evaluating and applying to colleges.

    1. Plan Ahead

    My first piece of advice is to plan as far ahead as possible! My college search began sophomore year when I set up a meeting with my college admissions counselor. No major plans were made, but I gained a basic understanding of when and how I would apply to schools.

    2. Take Standardized Tests Early

    I took the ACT for the first time the summer before my junior year. I highly recommend doing this. This gives you time to practice and make room for improvement. It also ensures you have testing accommodations in place. Fortunately, I am a good (albeit slow) test taker and eligible for extra time because of my ADHD. Alternatively, you may opt to apply to test-optional colleges and use the time to focus on other application parts.

    3. Gather Research

    Beyond taking the ACT, most of my prep work before senior year comprised attending college information sessions, researching schools, and brainstorming essay ideas. I gathered as much information as possible on the universities’ academics, costs, and accommodation programs. However, finding a strong and collaborative student community was my most important job. By the spring of junior year, I had compiled my list of colleges and ranked the University of Notre Dame as my top choice.

    4. Brainstorm Essay Ideas

    I began drafting a Common App essay the summer before senior year. Give yourself plenty of time to brainstorm ideas before you start writing. Great ideas do not happen overnight.

    5. Get Feedback

    Ask others to read your essays and offer feedback. I love storytelling, but my grammar is never great. One friend had the opposite problem, so we helped each other; I brainstormed ideas for him, and he fixed all my comma errors. Trading also prevented me from procrastinating.

    6. Pick a Writing Strategy

    Find a writing strategy for your college essay that works with how your brain thinks. If you are unsure, take a creative writing class. My essay was closer to poetry than an academic essay. I tried to have a strong narrative and told unique stories from my life, such as hanging a wagon in a Magnolia tree, traveling to see a solar eclipse, learning life lessons at summer camp, and being admitted into a secret theater society.

    7. Give Yourself Grace

    Be sure to give yourself grace. I am very grateful to attend Notre Dame. However, I’ve learned that no matter how hard I work, some things don’t end up as I imagined. During my recent search for a summer internship, I didn’t receive interviews for several large companies I absolutely loved and had networked with for months. The waiting game was so tough. Though I was disappointed, I kept putting myself out there, talked to other companies, and applied for jobs. I eventually did receive an amazing offer unexpectedly from one conversation at a career fair with a small boutique consulting firm. The company completely changed my perspective on the industry, and I made a very different decision than I initially thought I would.

    8. Keep An Open Mind

    Good can be found in all places. I imagined myself at Notre Dame and have loved my college years. At the same time, my summer internship completely took me by surprise, and yet, I know it will be a fantastic experience. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of openness and perseverance. Remember that, as a student with learning differences and ADHD you have had to work especially hard to find your place in the world. I am fully confident that by prioritizing a supportive community, planning, and having an open mind, you will find yourself surrounded by amazing opportunities and people better than you can imagine.

    When your newborn arrives, you can’t help but marvel over how perfect he is. Those tiny fingers and toes, that little mouth – everything is so cute and perfect!

    However, once you bring him home, you start noticing little things and start worrying. For instance. what is that patch of crusty skin on your baby’s scalp? Is something wrong with my perfect little baby?


    Relax! That crusty skin is just cradle cap, and it doesn’t mean that your little munchkin is anything short of perfect. Here’s everything you need to know about cradle cap in babies, and what you can do about it.

    What is Cradle Cap?

    Cradle cap is a skin condition also known as infantile seborrheic dermatitis. While seborrheic dermatitis appears as dandruff in adolescents and adults, it appears as thick, crusty or flaky skin in babies.

    Cradle cap is most commonly found on the scalp, which is why it has the name ‘cap’, but it can also occur on the face, forehead, or anywhere the skin folds or creases, like behind the ears, armpits or the diaper region.

    Cradle cap can occur anywhere from 3 weeks onward, and most babies overcome it by their first birthday. Some babies may show symptoms up to the age of four years, although this is rare.

    What Causes Cradle Cap?

    The exact cause of cradle cap is not known, although experts think there may be a few factors that could cause it:

    1. Hormones passed on from the mother, which cause an overproduction of oil in the hair follicles
    2. A yeast fungus called malassezia, found when there is excess sebum
    3. Extremely dry weather

    Contrary to what many people believe, cradle cap is not caused by poor hygiene, nor is it caused by allergies. Cradle cap is not contagious or dangerous at all, and it usually clears off by itself. Cradle cap often show up like these:

    • Patches of thick crusty or scaly skin on the scalp
    • Skin flakes that look like dandruff
    • Light redness

    The scales may have an oily look to them and may look white or yellow. Sometimes, the skin under the scales may appear pink or reddish if your baby has a light complexion.

    Cradle cap is sometimes confused with infantile eczema or atopic dermatitis, but these are completely different medical conditions. Atopic dermatitis and infantile eczema often cause itching, while cradle cap does not.

    In fact, cradle cap doesn’t bother babies in the least – although the same cannot be said about parents! While this is something that clears up on its own, you can hasten the process with a few natural remedies.

    1. Soft Brush

    The easiest way to get rid of cradle cap is to brush using a soft baby brush. You can do this either dry or after a wash. Start by gently massaging baby’s scalp with your fingers – make sure to use your finger pads and not your nails. This will help to loosen the scales.

    Then take the brush and brush gently in one direction, moving slowly so you release the flakes as you move. You can do this once a day, but stop if the scalp seems to be getting irritated. Some babies also like the brushing motion as it soothes them and lulls them to sleep.

    2. Soft Washcloth

    An alternative to using a brush is to use a washcloth. Choose a soft washcloth that’s made specifically for babies, so it’s not too rough on baby’s delicate skin.

    Wet the washcloth with warm water and squeeze out any excess. There are two ways you can now use this damp washcloth. You can rub baby’s scalp gently to loosen the scales, ensuring you don’t scrub too hard. Or, you can use it as a warm compress on the scalp, and then follow it up with a soft brush. The warmth and dampness will make the scales easier to remove.

    3. Oil Treatment

    Cradle cap is common in infants, and nothing to worry about! Here are 15 easy and effective natural remedies to treat Cradle Cap in babies.

    It is common to give babies an oil massage, especially in the early days, since it has many benefits. One of them is that oil helps in the removal of cradle cap. Use a baby-safe oil like coconut oil and always do a patch test first.

    Take a few drops of the oil and gently massage it over the affected areas. Leave it on for about 15 minutes – this should soften the scales and make them easier to remove. Then brush it out with a soft brush and wash out the remaining oil with a mild shampoo.

    4. Mild Shampoo

    A baby shampoo also works well to get rid of cradle cap. For mild cases, regular baby shampoo will work, but if your baby’s cradle cap is more severe, you may need to get a baby dandruff shampoo. Do not use adult dandruff shampoos on babies – they can be too harsh.

    When applying shampoo, gently massage the baby’s scalp, so that the scales soften and loosen up. You can also use a washcloth at this stage to gently rub the shampoo in.     5. Moisturizer

    If your baby’s cradle cap is due to extreme dryness, applying moisture will help fix the problem as well as prevent it from reoccurring. Use a gentle natural baby moisturizer and apply it on baby’s scalp right after a bath, while the skin is still a little damp. This will lock the moisture in and soften the scales, making them easier to get rid of with a brush.

    6. Baking Soda

    Cradle cap is common in infants, and nothing to worry about! Here are 15 easy and effective natural remedies to treat Cradle Cap in babies.

    For an older baby or a toddler, you can try a baking soda hack. Mix some baking soda in water to create a thin paste and apply it over the scalp. Let it rest for a minute and then wash off with a mild baby shampoo.

    Baking soda works because its alkaline pH neutralizes the scalp’s pH. Please do not try this with newborn babies or young infants, and it’s best not to combine this remedy with other remedies like oil treatments.

    7. Humidifier

    As mentioned earlier, dryness can exacerbate cradle cap, especially dryness in the air. Using humidifiers helps add some moisture to the air, which decreases skin dryness. Some babies have cradle cap due to excess sebum production, and humidifiers help fix this problem. This is particularly true if you use an air conditioner or heater in the room.

    8. Essential Oils

    Cradle cap is common in infants, and nothing to worry about! Here are 15 easy and effective natural remedies to treat Cradle Cap in babies.

    Essential oils are used for many home remedies, and they’re a great way to avoid the use of chemicals. However, they are quite potent and have to be used with care on small babies. Always use an essential oil in combination with a carrier oil like coconut oil, and never use an undiluted essential oil on young children.

    The common essential oils for cradle cap are lemon oil and geranium oil. Tea tree oil, which is used as a dandruff remedy may also be used. Mix 2 drops of essential oil in 2 tablespoons of carrier oil and massage it on baby’s scalp. Leave it on for a few minutes and then brush off the flakes. Follow up with a mild shampoo. Please remember that this is to be used on babies older than 6 months and always consult your doctor first.

    9. Breast Milk

    Breast milk has many uses, and it is often considered a magic pill for multiple baby problems. It’s the same with cradle cap – breast milk has long been used as a home remedy for this condition. It is believed that breast milk has many antibodies and nutrients that can soothe sensitive skin.

    Simply apply a few drops of breast milk on your baby’s scalp and massage it gently. Leave it on for a few minutes and then brush it off with a soft baby brush.

    10. Chamomile Tea

    Cradle cap is common in infants, and nothing to worry about! Here are 15 easy and effective natural remedies to treat Cradle Cap in babies.

    Chamomile tea is generally known for its calming effects that help induce sleep, and these benefits extend to healing cradle cap in babies. The best way to use chamomile tea for cradle cap is to create a rinse of 2 cups of cooled chamomile tea with a tablespoon of coconut oil.

    Gently massage some mild shampoo on baby’s scalp and leave it on for 15 minutes. Use a soft brush to release the flakes on the scalp and then rinse it out with the chamomile tea rinse. Make sure it doesn’t get into baby’s eyes. Follow up with plain water – you can try this remedy 2-3 times a week.

    11. Shea Butter

    Cradle cap is common in infants, and nothing to worry about! Here are 15 easy and effective natural remedies to treat Cradle Cap in babies.

    Shea butter is a common ingredient in natural moisturizers, making it a great remedy for cradle cap too. Simply apply some shea butter on the affected area and leave it on the scalp for 15-20 minutes. Use a soft brush to brush off the loosened scales and then wipe off the excess shea butter with a soft washcloth. Follow up with a good rinse so you get rid of any residue.

    12. Apple Cider Vinegar

    Apple cider vinegar is often used to treat dandruff in adults, and it can also be used on babies for cradle cap. However, ACV is still rather strong, so it’s best to reserve it for older babies and toddlers. The antifungal nature of ACV will help get rid of any fungal infection that may be causing the cradle cap.

    Dilute 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with a quarter cup of water and pour it over baby’s scalp. Take care that nothing gets into your baby’s eyes. Massage baby’s scalp gently and let it sit for 10 minutes. Rinse out with water and follow up with a mild shampoo if you like.

    13. Oatmeal

    You’ll have noticed that a lot of the remedies to treat cradle cap deals with scrubbing out the flakes, after softening them with something first. Oatmeal performs the same function, acting as a natural scrub.

    Grind oats into a fine powder and mix with enough water to make a thick paste. Apply it all over the affected area, massaging it gently. Let it sit for 5 minutes and then wash off with water.

    14. Aloe Gel

    These Home Remedies for Dandruff are natural and effective, and completely safe for use in children. Fix dandruff without harmful chemicals!

    Aloe vera is a great alternative to a natural moisturizer, and is quite soothing for skin, considering it is often used to treat sunburn. When using aloe vera gel for cradle cap, be sure to use 100% natural and freshly harvested aloe vera gel, instead of store-bought versions.

    Simply apply some fresh aloe vera gel on baby’s scalp and let it sit for a few minutes. Make sure not to leave it for too long since aloe vera has a cooling effect, and it can make baby uncomfortable or ill. Wash it off with a mild shampoo and rinse thoroughly to get rid of any residue.

    15. Nutritious Diet

    Sometimes the solution to baby’s cradle cap may lie on the breastfeeding Mommy’s plate! Vitamin D, Vitamin B and Omega-3 fats are important for skin health, and can help in keeping cradle cap at bay. Some foods to include are flax seeds, chia seeds, fish and egg yolks. You can also take a supplement if you’re vegetarian or vegan.

    Things to remember:

    1. When trying out oil treatments, avoid peanut oil since it can trigger allergies
    2. Always use soaps or shampoos specifically meant for babies
    3. Don’t use your fingers to pick at the scales – it can cause infection
    4. Always be gentle, whether brushing, massaging or scrubbing
    5. Speak to your doctor before starting any new remedy for your baby

    Sometimes natural remedies may not be enough, and in such cases your doctor may recommend a medicated shampoo or a corticosteroid cream. Take your baby to the doctor if you notice any of these symptoms.

    • Any leaking fluid or bleeding
    • Swelling of the skin
    • Red, inflamed skin
    • Unpleasant smells from the scaly patch
    • A warm feeling in the affected area
    • Spreading over a larger area of the body
    • Persistent cradle cap even after weeks of treatment

    “I got a presale code!” my teenage daughter exclaimed, her eyes lighting up at the prospect of buying concert tickets to see the latest artist du jour.

    I smiled and flashed her thumbs up. However, my outward display of enthusiasm did not match how I felt inside. I felt, well, weary. 

    After all, it hadn’t been long since being waitlisted for Taylor Swift’s Eras tour. My recovery from that rigamarole, plus other recent concert ticket-buying experiences, was ongoing. 

    Because from presale codes to Verified Fan status to digital wallets, I’m kinda done with how we go to concerts nowadays. I miss the way we went to concerts in the 80s.

    6 ways concert-going was just better in the 80’s

    1. No presale

    In the 80s, I saw iconic acts like Madonna and Huey Lewis and the News with nary a presale or Verified Fan status in sight. When the TicketMaster phone lines opened at 10 am on a Friday, we called repeatedly until the heavens smiled and a real-life human answered.

    Maybe we had a few seconds to ponder where to sit and what price to pay. But you usually grabbed the best available seats, even if those were the second to last row, where I sat for U2’s Joshua Tree tour. But, hey, I was there!

    2. No resale sites

    And if the busy signal never stopped and we didn’t get seats? We didn’t go. There was no Stubhub or Seatgeek with huge markups and exorbitant fees. I didn’t consider buying from a scalper, aka Mike Damone from Fast Times, either. I’d heard undercover cops posed as scalpers, and there was no internet to debunk that as an urban legend.

    3. No VIP experience

    The last concert my teenage daughter and I attended sold reserved sections of seats as part of their VIP experience. I think it included a drink and some concert merch, too, all for what seemed like an exorbitant upcharge.

    The idea of a VIP experience would be laughable in the 80s. Back then, we made our own VIP experience. I remember when my friends and I snuck down to the eighth row of the A-ha concert and “borrowed” some empty seats. We screamed our heads off for Morten, Paul and Magne until the rightful seat owners showed up, and we retreated to our nosebleed seats. 

    But for 30 glorious minutes, we rocked out like VIPs!

    4. No selfies

    At another recent concert, my daughter and I watched a young woman snap dozens of selfies of herself “enjoying the moment” aka posing for the camera, her back to the band she’d come to see. She checked each shot before she found the perfect one, which I believe was the 42nd take.

    Meanwhile, of the two dozen concerts I attended in the ’80s and early ’90s, I have zero pictures of myself before, during, or after the events. (Although I wish I had a picture of me in the stirrup pants and hot pink boots I wore to the Thompson Twins.) Taking my picture before a concert didn’t cross my mind, and during the concert, my friends and I danced and sang our hearts out, lost in the moment and transformed by the beat. 

    5. No digital tickets

    There was no ocean of technology to navigate when we went to concerts in the 80s. We didn’t add cyber tickets to a digital wallet or scan, swipe, or have them disappear into the ether. No, we carried our prized tickets to the entrance, where the ticket taker ripped them before handing us the stub. That stub became a badge of honor, a treasured souvenir most likely posted on a bedroom wall for perpetuity.

    6. No tracking

    At concerts in the 80s, we were wild, free, and untracked. Yes, for my first concert in the 7th grade, my friends and I were chaperoned by my friend’s dad, but by 8th grade, we were dropped off to attend the likes of Howard Jones by ourselves.

    After the encore, clutching our overpriced concert t-shirts, we navigated to the same spot where we had been dropped off and waited for someone’s mom to pick us up. I don’t recall being frightened; it instilled us resilience and made us feel capable. 

    My fellow Gen Xers will agree that concerts in the 80s were amazing. Or should I say, like, totally amazing? Because they were.

    I have the memories and the ticket stubs to prove it.

    I remember the time I set out to create the perfect routine that I vowed to follow for the rest of my life – an unusual endeavor for me, given that I had rejected countless routines like they were my mortal enemy. I believed in spontaneity and had feared that routines would doom me to a monotonous life.

    But the truth is, even as a free spirit, I knew that I desperately needed some semblance of order to function. It was a hard pill to swallow; routines promise productivity and stability, and I knew that not following any routines triggered my anxiety and other quirks.

    So, armed with advice from books and blogs, I was sure I’d come up with the secret formula to get into a routine: It was all or nothing.

    Trying – and Failing – to Get the Perfect Routine

    The so-called perfect morning routine described in many self-help books usually involves waking up at the crack of dawn, meditating like a Zen master, jogging like Usain Bolt, and whipping up a wholesome breakfast.

    Easy peasy to implement, right? Not really. My mornings looked more like live-action cartoons. I would set multiple alarms to wake up, but I also was a gold medalist in hitting the snooze button.

    Every time I tried to meditate, the DJ in my mind would come on and play random songs from the ’00s. And jogging? More like a speedy walk… to the coffee maker. Often, my first meal of the day was dinner.

    It goes without saying that I failed miserably to follow all parts of this “perfect” routine. I was harsh on myself for failing. Then again, I suspected that I would quickly become bored and restless with any schedule I managed to keep. There was no winning; I thought I was destined to never have a routine.

    How I Finally Got Into a Routine

    In my defense, I had no idea that I had ADHD at the time. The materials I consulted then on crafting routines were written for the normal folks (i.e., neurotypical people). As I learned more about the reasons behind my exasperating (and sometimes hilarious) relationship with routines, my mission shifted.

    I realized that a lot of it came down to actually scheduling spontaneity. I now set timers for focused work periods and I schedule short breaks in between to let my mind wander. These breaks often lead to new and exciting ideas. I also use apps like Structured, Toggl, and iOS Focus to help me gradually transition to and from focus mode and free time.

    Loosening my black-and-white mentality around doing things the right way also helped me skip the snooze button, which had been my kryptonite for years. No matter how many alarms I set, my tired ADHD brain would plead, “Just five more minutes!”

    A gentle wake-up routine was the answer. I completely replaced the old blaring alarms with sunlight. Yes, you read that right – I gave up on conventional alarms. And no, I’m not waking up late. The outcome is just the opposite. I used to struggle to get up at 8 a.m. with an alarm. Now, I wake up at 6 a.m., without an alarm, feeling fully rested and alert.

    The battle between routine and spontaneity, I learned, doesn’t have to be a battle at all. My need for structure and love for the unexpected can coexist – it never had to be one or the other. Achieving order, I also know now, is only possible on my terms, not anyone else’s.

    Have you visited Croft State Park? With a wooden dock, a clear lake, tiny minnows sparkling in sunny shallow waters, tall trees, horses, hiking trails, and a playground, it sounds like the perfect place, right?  You’ll want to check out Croft State Park the next time you’re looking for a family adventure!

    Spending a Day at Croft State Park

    This gorgeous 7,000-acre state park offers miles of hiking, biking, and even equestrian trails.  On our visit, we walked the short Lake Craig connector trail and then enjoyed views of an absolutely beautiful Lake Craig.  We ate snacks we enjoyed them sitting on an adorable little dock watching the tiny minnows in the shallow water around us.  The nearby fishermen were also quite entertaining for my crew.

    We enjoyed a very peaceful morning in the park.  My homeschoolers were able to practice making super sentences with quality adjectives about all the things they were noticing from the dock.  “The sun sparkles on the backs of the wiggling minnows.”   The next time we go I will bring sketchbooks and writing paper so they can write down their sentences and illustrate.  There were definitely plenty of places to sit near the lake, and lots of grass for blankets, if that’s your preference.

    You will find bathrooms conveniently near the parking lot for Lake Craig, and a short walk up the hill brings you to a nice playground with views of the park’s equestrian facilities.  While there were only a handful of horses and riders when we visited, my children really enjoyed watching as we walked past.  The playground was great for my children (ages 4 through 8), but younger children will need to be watched carefully due to the height of some of the equipment.

    Things to Do at Croft State Park

    Hiking and Biking Trails

    Croft has many hiking trails, including an easy Nature Trail that’s about one and a half miles long.  We went to the park intending to hike this trail, but even with a map, we struggled to find the trailhead.  We gave up and went on our little adventure at the lake and playground instead.  However, as we drove back down the park road headed for home, we noticed work crews clearing a few trees, and their trucks had been parked in front of the trailhead for the nature trail.  We could have driven by 20 times and never seen it!  ‘

    Trails at Croft

    There are several trails at Croft, with some of the major ones being the Palmetto Trail (Croft Passage), Nature Trail, Foster Mill, Southside Loop, and Rocky Ridge/ Whitestone Springs. You will also find several additional mixed-use trails that are designated for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. This park has over 20 miles of mountain biking trails, which is spectacular if you love the sport.

    The SC State Park Croft State Park website does a great job detailing what trails are for what, their difficulty, and how long each trail is. The Park Ranger can also help you out, with office hours 11 am to noon and 4 pm to 5 pm daily.

    Fortunately, there’s so much to see and enjoy at Croft State Park, that it didn’t matter much to us.  But, do bring a map with you! If you’re looking for the Nature Trail, then you’ll find the trailhead on the right, just before you get to the parking lot for the equestrian facilities.

    We love taking a small portion of the Palmetto Trail out to Fairforest Creek in the summer because it is not too difficult of a portion of the trail, so our toddler and four-year-old can come along. It also leads out to the creek, which is a great place to splash in the creek for a little while on hot days.

    Camping

    Love camping? Then camping at Croft should be on your radar for places to go next time you’re ready to pack up and head to the great outdoors. The park offers both RV camping and tent camping sites, in addition to a primitive group camping site that can accommodate up to 100 people. Camping sites are on packed gravel and come with electrical and water hookups. There are even hot showers, which as a mom with messy kids, makes taking them camping a little easier.

    Canoe, Kayak, and Paddleboard Rentals

    One of the great places to do watersports in the area is at Croft. You can bring your own equipment, or you can rent canoes, small boats, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards from the state park itself. For Jon boat and canoe rentals, you pay $15 for 4 hours of time or $25 per day. For kayaks and paddleboards, the cost is $10 per hour for the rental. They do not rent after 6 pm, so keep that in mind when planning your trip.

    Admission for Croft State Park is $3 for adults, and $1 for children 6- 15. Children under 6 are free.

    Pets are allowed as long as they are leashed.

    I needed to go clothing shopping and asked in a local Facebook group where I could find a clothing store for fat women. And in addition to a lot of helpful suggestions I got so many comments about my choice of language.

    • “Plus size women. Not fat women.”
    • “Why the term Fat women? Larger sized women please!”
    • “Can’t we just say plus-sized? So much less demeaning.”

    I specifically use the term fat.

    I am fat.

    At  5’9 and 285 lbs, fat is a perfectly accurate descriptor. I’m fat. I’m tall. I’m blue eyed, straight brown haired, lightly freckled, myopic (need glasses), and a woman. Those describe me. They are all facts. Descriptors. None of them are either positive or negative. They are neutral. 

    Descriptors are only negative if you make them that way. Otherwise, they are neutral.

    The first thing that came to mind as another example was using the word black to describe a person. For a long time the N word was used for Black people, literally meaning black, but because it was said with such derision, it became an insult. Then people wanted to not use a word about someone’s skin color to describe them and switched to “African American”, but over time that word is less used because it doesn’t even accurately describe many Black people. The Black community has reclaimed the word Black (just please capitalize it), and no, it is not offensive. (Some of them have even reclaimed the N word, but only to use within their circles, as they decided to take a word that was used to hurt them and take it back along with the power to hurt them using it. But that is just for Black people to do, no one else is allowed to use the word.) The word Black is simply a descriptor, not positive or negative, totally neutral. 

    However, if you say the word with derision, obviously it is problematic, but the derision is the problem, not the word itself. Additionally, if you use the word in conjunction with a negative stereotype about Black people, that would be racist, and then, that word shouldn’t be used. (I’m not going to list racist tropes here, just fill in the blank “Black ____”.)

    Disabilities are similar. In the past, many disabled people were locked up in homes, and not allowed to interact with the world. Seen as a burden by society, and talked about only in hushed voices. Disability was seen as a bad thing. People trying to be better people decided that people shouldn’t be described as disabled, but rather as “with a disability”, because disability was still seen as a bad thing, and they were trying to differentiate and show that they see the person as a real person, and not as their “bad thing”, their disability. 

    Overall, in more recent history, the disability community (and especially the Autistic community) has stood up and said that they aren’t on board with that. By trying to separate people from their disability, they were still thinking negatively about disabilities, and the issue is with people and how they treat people’s disabilities, not the disabilities themselves. Additionally, it erases how much disabilities can affect someone’s entire life, making it a central part of them. So now the preferred term is disabled people and autistic people.

    Religious identities are also just neutral descriptive terms, whether talking about Muslim, Jewish, pagan, etc… (I haven’t heard Christian used as an insult, but perhaps in some circles it would be too.) While there is nothing wrong with using those as descriptors about someone, if linked to a stereotype the group is stigmatized for, then it turns those words negative. 

    Ok, for this I am going to use examples, sorry for my inconsistencies within this post. Talking about a domestic violence sitiation and referring to someone as an abusive Muslim man is wrong, and turns Muslim into a negative word, especially since the word Muslim is being used to emphasize how bad it is, since “you all know that Muslims are abusers”. Talking about bargain hunters and mentioning “cheap Jews” is wrong, because it is stereotyping Jews as being greedy money hoarders, and Jew is only brought up to show “just how bad their “cheapness” is. Talking about immoral people and bringing up their paganism is using a negative stereotype that specifically says that pagan people are lacking morals. I hope this explains why the words Muslim, Jew, and pagan, though neutral at their core, still can be seen as an insult, but only are when used as described above.

    Back to fatness.

    People see fat as a negative thing. Society has stigmatized fat people with so many negative stereotypes. 

    • Lazy. 
    • Gross. 
    • Ugly. 
    • Gluttonous. 
    • Unhealthy. 
    • Having messed up priorities. 
    • Guilty. 

    People see fat people and think bad things about us. We must be fat because we eat so much. We’re fat because we’re too lazy to exercise and too lazy to make an effort to go on a diet. We are fat and therefore don’t take care of our bodies, so we must smell and be all sorts of gross. Fat people are unattractive and no one wants a fat person, so we’re ugly. We are obviously all unhealthy because we are fat, we make unhealthy life choices, and are obviously all going to die young because of our unhealthy life choices. Our priorities are quite clearly skewed, or we would have done something already about our fatness. And of course, we’re guilty, because being fat is completely our fault.

    These are all nasty and untrue myths. There are many reasons why someone can be fat, and how much or what someone eats can have nothing to do with it at all. Medication can make someone fat, so specifically taking care of your health can cause you to be fat. Other health issues can cause someone to gain weight, so fatness can be a symptom of a health issue, not the cause. Fat people often exercise a lot and eat healthier diets than many skinny people. Fat people take care of our bodies and don’t stink, and there are many people attracted to fat people, we aren’t ugly. And of course, many times fatness is something that isn’t in our control, which makes it clearly not our fault. 

    When someone thinks using the word fat is offensive, it’s because they think there’s something wrong with being fat. That you shouldn’t use a mean word about someone. Calling someone fat is only offensive if you see fat as a bad thing. By avoiding to use the word fat to describe someone fat, you’re doing the equivalent of people saying “Did you hear about the Smith family? Their son is *whispers* autistic.” Can’t say the word aloud because it’s embarrassing to be that way, so we will use words like “special” instead of disabled, or “pleasantly plump” instead of fat… 

    The body positivity movement and specifically the fat acceptance movement has decided to reclaim the word fat. By choosing to use the word fat as a descriptor, by not sidestepping with all sorts of euphamisms such as plus sized, large sized, heavy set, fluffy, full bodied, we are choosing to confront the parts of society that view being fat as a bad thing and fat as a bad word. We emphasize that there is nothing wrong with being fat, by our very usage of that word.

    By reclaiming it, we do make people uncomfortable, yes, but this discomfort hopefully will cause people to think about why I, as a fat person, would choose to call myself that. Why a fat person would not be bothered by being called that. Maybe it’ll help them, eventually, come around to accepting that being fat isn’t a bad thing. It just is. It is as neutral as one’s height, eye color, religion, or neurotype.

    That doesn’t mean it is cool to use the words like “fat pig” or “fat slob” or other terms that get paired with the word fat which encourage stereotypes about fat people.

    But fat people clothing stores? Yup, I’ll call it that. And when I get pushback to that, I’ll keep standing my ground about my usage of the term. 

    You have a problem with my calling myself fat? Maybe you need to work on your acceptance of fat people, and on realizing that there isn’t anything negative about being fat. Maybe then you’ll see that fat isn’t a bad word. That it is simply a word.

    P.S. Does this mean you should call other women fat who get offended by that word? No. Offending people isn’t nice. It doesn’t matter how neutral a word is, if you know it offends someone else, you don’t use it to describe them. Just be a nice person. But that doesn’t mean at the same time you can’t be part of the movement to change how society sees the word fat.

    The Kannapolis Celebration of Lights is Spectacular

    It’s the time of year again to enjoy the spectacular display of holiday lights at Village Park in Kannapolis at the annual Celebration of Lights. We visited the event on opening night and were thrilled to watch the annual Christmas tree-lighting celebration. Along with the FREE light display of over 250,000 lights adorning the trees and buildings, there are also some pretty unique things to do throughout the month-long celebration in this beautiful park.

    The Celebration of Lights: Village Park, Kannapolis

    From November 18th, 2023 – December 30th, 2023, Village Park in Kannapolis is illuminated by lights of all colors, animated light displays, and the town’s Christmas tree display that makes for a magical photo opportunity with your family. To complement the lights, you can also take a train ride around the park, ride a Venetian carousel, and meet with Santa. Or, take the walking trail and just enjoy the lights around the park. Either way, you’re in for a treat!

    Ride the Winterland Express Train Through the Lights

    One of the Celebration of Lights most popular attractions is the Winterland Express, a train ride weaving through the light displays! The g-24 scale replica train travels throughout the entire park, blowing its little whistle, while going through light tunnels and beside animated displays while you look for the 12 days of Christmas. The train gives guests the best view of the lights and is a lot of fun for all ages. For 2023, they even added an additional train.

    The train runs every 10 minutes and is by reservation only during the week. You can purchase tickets for the Winterland Express for $2 per passenger through the City of Kannapolis. Guest can make train reservations for Sunday through Thursday, but Friday and Saturday will be walk-up only. All you have to do is print your ticket or bring your mobile ticket to the train depot for boarding. The popularity of this attraction makes lines grow long quickly, so keep that in mind and plan for a little bit of a wait.

    The Carousel

    The double-decker Venetian carousel was one of my daughter’s favorite experiences of the holiday season so far! The carousel is housed indoors at Village Park and features beautifully crafted horses, chariots, gorgeously painted in pastels, with 1800 lights along the Brazilian oak decking. We went on the carousel during opening night, so there was a significant line, but it didn’t take long before it was our turn. If you have a tendency for motion sickness, I would recommend grabbing one of the seats instead of standing beside the horse (I learned this very quickly).

    Tickets are the carousel are $2 per person, and you do not need to make reservations ahead of time.

    Meet With Santa, Roast S’mores, and More

    It wouldn’t be a true holiday celebration with Santa! You can visit with Santa in his adorable studio and take a photo of your kids rattling off their growing Christmas list. Afterward, head over to the firepits to roast some delicious s’mores and enjoy the warmth. The Celebration of Lights will also have a 30-minute caroling experience from the Kannapolis Singing Bears every hour to really set the mood for the holidays. 

    Things to Know Before You Visit the Celebration of Lights

    • Bathrooms– There is a small bathroom located at the park that is kept fairly clean, along with a changing table in the largest stall in the women’s bathroom. 
    • Fireworks occur on the opening night of the Celebration of Lights in conjunction with the annual tree-lighting ceremony. These start right as the tree is lit up, making for a truly magical experience.
    • Lines– If you plan to go to the event on opening night or during the weekend, expect longer lines for the attractions than if you visit during the week.
    • Parking– There is ample free parking at the Kannapolis YMCA, which is located right beside the park. You will also find free parking at Village Park.
    • Inclement weather– If the weather turns bad and the City of Kannapolis decides to cancel events for the night, you can use your tickets another night.

    Method

    • Blend 1 cup of grated coconut and strain to get the first milk.
    • With the remaining coconut left in the sieve, add back to blender and blend again with 1 cup water – second milk.
    • First milk is always thicker than the second milk, they’re always used at different points in recipes, so store them separately.
    • The leftover pulp can be used to make cookies, add into chapati, smoothies, chutneys, Dosa batter etc., you can sneak them into any dish without getting its taste. Please don’t throw them out.

    There are so many considerations to hold in your mind at once when preparing yourself for a new baby that discussing it with your existing child can be easy to put off. No matter how old they are, talking to them about their new sibling is the best way to set up a positive relationship with the new baby.


    1. Introduce Them to Media About Siblings


    If you feel that your child might have particular trouble accepting the news of a sibling, prepare them for the conversation by showing them media about the topic.
    Read them stories about siblings and introduce the idea as an abstract concept rather than an imminent life event. Show them a range of sibling relationship examples that frame the dynamic in a positive light.
