    Nous devons souvent nous rappeler les uns aux autres que l’éducation des enfants est vitale. C’est un vrai travail. C’est un travail complexe. Il faut des millions de moments pour élever un enfant. À travers le prisme d’une société qui se concentre sur les produits et la concurrence, chaque moment semble si “insignifiant”. Sécher votre enfant après son bain. Essuyer ses bottes sales avant qu’il ne s’éloigne trop de la porte d’entrée. Le questionner sur ses mots d’orthographe. Des moments comme ceux-ci ne semblent pas être des tâches vitales et dignes d’intérêt. Mais c’est pourtant le cas. Nous espérons que vous vous souviendrez de l’importance de votre travail et que vous aiderez les parents autour de vous à s’en souvenir également.

    Vous découvrirez des idées intéressantes dans le monde de la parentalité, y compris les nôtres, et vous réfléchirez par vous-même.

    Vous êtes le véritable expert en matière d’éducation dans votre foyer. Vous pouvez faire des expériences. Vous pouvez tirer vos propres conclusions. Si pour n’importe quelle raison, ses besoins précoces n’ont pas été satisfaits, ou si son besoin de connexions quotidiennes n’a pas été rempli, vous en entendrez parler sous la forme d’un comportement difficile. Nous espérons que vous agirez avec confiance pour fixer une limite. Les limites les aident à soulager le stress qu’ils subissent, afin qu’ils puissent retrouver leur bon sens inné et leur joie de coopérer.

    Si vous êtes joueur.se votre limite suscitera des rires qui vous rapprocheront à nouveau. Si vous vous montrez doux.ce et pragmatique, il se mettra probablement à pleurer, à tempêter ou à piquer une crise. Les deux approches sont constructives. Si vous restez à ses côtés, il continuera à libérer sa tension intérieure jusqu’à ce qu’il retrouve sa capacité à écouter, à coopérer et à tirer le meilleur parti de la situation.

Organisez-vous pour obtenir de l’aide. Libérez-vous du sentiment que demander de l’aide est un signe d’échec de votre part. Un bon soutien améliorera votre rôle de parent. Il est normal de demander de l’aide. Nous espérons que vous n’abandonnerez pas tant que vous n’aurez pas trouvé un bon système de soutien pour accomplir cette tâche importante.

  • “Stuck in the Upside Down: How Stranger Things Captures Life with ADHD”

    I finally got into Stranger Things. Not because of the terror and gore, but because the show, to my surprise, lays out perfect metaphors for ADHD. Like me, its characters know a great deal about what it means to contend with an invisible force, seemingly of another dimension.

    The Upside Down Is My Normal

    When 12-year-old Will Byers goes missing from the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, in 1983, his family and friends don’t realize that he’s actually right there beside them. He’s just in an alternate dimension called the Upside Down, which parallels the real world. The Upside Down is a colder version of home, a world of intense electrical storms, strange bloodthirsty creatures, and darkness.

    Living with ADHD is a lot like being in the Upside Down. I’m amongst people in the real world, but they don’t see what’s in my dimension. While others go smoothly from Point A to Point B, I have fog, toxic quicksand, and squelching monsters that keep me from moving freely.

    Stuck in a Loop

    “Stuckness” appears throughout the show. Sure, there are the characters who become stuck in the Upside Down. But the Upside Down itself is also stuck. Even as time in the show’s world moves ahead, the Upside Down stays in 1983. Then there’s the mother of Eleven (a young girl with psychokinetic abilities) who is stuck in a catatonic state, caught in a mental loop that replays the events leading to her daughter’s kidnapping.

    If my ADHD brain had a dial, “stuck in a loop” would be its default setting. It cycles endlessly through memories of childhood starring young me as a brilliant, shining disappointment. This loop replayed with intensity after I was diagnosed with ADHD in my 20s. I experienced my memories with a fresh set of eyes, mourning all the time I struggled socially and emotionally without understanding why. I become enmeshed in the loop less often these days, but it remains a constant presence.

    The Mind Flayer

    The powerful, massive, spider-like monster of the Upside Down — the show’s antagonist for most of its run — can connect to and command surrounding creatures and entities even as they venture outside the alternate dimension.

    Sometimes, living with ADHD feels like living with a creature that’s flaying my body and mind. It tears through my brain, causing symptoms and challenges I’d rather bypass. But sometimes my ADHD acts like a living, breathing partner. Like when it drives me into hyperfocus and allows me to be extremely, but selectively, productive.

    Vines and Tunnels

    When Will becomes possessed by the Mind Flayer, he begins to erratically draw a series of tunnels and vines. His drawings, initially dismissed, are later discovered to be a map of the Upside Down growing beneath the town. The tunnels twist and turn, and the vines have minds of their own.

    ADHD thinking patterns can operate like the vines and tunnels of the Upside Down. One thought gives birth to another, growing out of hand, spreading until I burn out. Or, without warning, a thought can stop. A brilliant idea becomes a dead end, abandoned.

    Who’s In Your Party?

    The teen protagonists of the show call themselves the Party, borrowing from a Dungeons & Dragons term for an allied group of players. The party and the entire town unite to confront the forces besieging their home.

    When no one else knows I’m drowning, even those closest to me, I remind myself that the Upside Down is invisible. I need to let them know it’s trapped me. When I do, I have faith they’ll show up and help me fight every scary monster. When we feel broken, we can heal together.

    History and Location

    The former mall, McAlister Square, also known as University Center, is a large indoor space with fabulous parking that usually sits empty on the weekends. Shontel Babb, Market Manager, dreamed up the idea of continuing the Greenville Saturday farmers market tradition by moving it indoors during the winter months. Babb owns a sweet potato pie business and sells her pies at the TD Saturday market during the warmer months. 

    Vendors

    There are a total of around 200 vendors attached to the market offering a variety of locally grown and in-season produce, meats, dairy products, eggs, honey, kombucha, salsa, pasta, coffee, baked goods, cheeses, microgreens, lotions, tinctures, and so much more. Some only have one market date while others attend every week or every other week.

    Because the space is HUGE, and vendors do not need to worry about setting up tents in various weather conditions, there are even more vendors that you might not meet at traditional farmers markets. These can include craftsmen, artisans, woodworkers, and book sellers. 

    Many vendors gladly accept SNAP/EBT payment for eligible food items! There will be a welcome sign displayed at participating tables. Visit the Market Information booth to purchase market bucks that can be redeemed for eligible items using your EBT card.

    The Experience

    Even if you don’t buy a thing from the market, browsing the stalls and taking in some of the entertainment options can make for a fun family friendly outing on winter weekends. A bounce house is usually set up for children, lively music is DJed over the speakers, and there are pop-up free yoga sessions adjacent to the market.

    Some vendors offer pre-made breakfast grits bowls, breakfast breads, and coffee to hold in hand while you shop. The indoor space is also permanently host to an Eggs Up Grill location, which is open even before the market starts. So, you can grab breakfast before shopping and make a whole morning of it!

    An Oceanfront Location That’s Still Close to the Action

    We appreciated that the Ellie Beach Resort sits just south of the busiest part of Myrtle Beach, because we love to stay at places that are close to fun stuff to do, but not so close (if you know what I mean). 

    You’ll be right on the beach and only a short drive from The Market Common, Myrtle Beach State Park, and several grocery stores to fill up your fridge for a weekend stay. Plus, Springmaid Pier is literally within view, which is one of the perks if you’re looking for fun activities like fishing clinics and to see the longest pier in SC. And, if you’re looking to check out Brookgreen Gardens or Huntington Beach State Park, they are only a half hour away.

    Rooms That Really Work for Families

    The rooms at Ellie Beach Resort were nicely designed, and my husband and I loved that our younger kids had their own space, and the kids were super excited. They spent all of their time in the room hiding out on the top bunk, watching movies, and playing. 

    Some of the resort units include a front sleeping area with bunk beds, plus a separate bedroom with a king bed that faces the ocean. They have a couple of other room designs to choose from as well. All of the decor is modern and simplistic, and everything feels clean and cared for, not fancy, but definitely comfy.

    There’s space for your crew to spread out and watch TV, and our room includes a small kitchenette with a full-size fridge/freezer, microwave, and sink, so you can toss together breakfast or lunch without leaving the room. We visited during the off-season, but we were still able to hang out on the balcony and watch the waves roll in, and the birds fill up the beach shore. I am sure it is an even better view during the warmer months, because you can watch the pool crowd, kids going down the water slides, and visitors of the pier right from the balcony.

    Just know that this hotel is an open-air layout, meaning that the hallways to the rooms are all out in the open rather than enclosed. It can get a little chilly going from the elevators to the rooms, so make sure you are prepared if you’re visiting during the off-season.

    Pools for Every Season (Even Warm Ones!)

    No matter when you visit, there are some excellent pools to play in. In the off-season, families can enjoy a heated indoor pool right on the Ellie Beach Resort property. The indoor pool was comfortably warm, and we spent a lot of our time hanging out there swimming. It does get chilly going from the pool back to the room, so bring extra towels and robes (pro tip!).

    If that’s not enough, guests also get access to another indoor pool at the DoubleTree Hilton on the premises. That pool is also warm, and goes from an indoor to outdoor style in a mini lazy river layout with floats.

    The warm pools were a big selling point for our visit during December, and they did not disappoint! 

    When the weather warms up, the outdoor pool area comes to life. There are several outdoor pools, including a kiddie pool and splash zone for little ones, plus triple water slides would be a big hit with older kids. Lounge chairs are available throughout the deck, and many rooms look right out over the pools and the ocean.

    Dining Made Simple

    While we stayed at the Ellie Beach Resort, we decided to have dinner on our first night at the Ocean Blue, which is located near the check-in lobby. There are several other dining options and a lobby bar as well. My husband ordered steak and potatoes, which were delicious, while I decided to grab a burger. The burger was perfectly cooked, and we were super happy with our meals and the service. Our kids are a little picky, but they liked the cheese pizza here, and of course, were pleased with the fries. 

    In the surrounding area, families can find pizza, burgers, tacos, coffee shops, and even a grocery store close by. You could easily choose to stock the fridge with snacks and takeout, and there is a Walmart Marketplace right down the street. 

    Off-Season Perks: Holiday Magic + Lower Prices

    Visiting Ellie Beach Resort during the off-season is not just about saving money (though you will save by alot). It’s also about enjoying a different kind of beach trip, slower, quieter, and a little less stressful. We prioritized family time, shelling on the beach, spending time at the indoor pool, and checking out some of the Christmas lights throughout town (including the beautiful tree at Broadway).

    At Ellie Beach Resort during the holidays, they host Yuletide by the Sea, a fun seasonal celebration that includes crafts, kid-friendly activities, and appearances from Santa. Many local attractions stay open, and you can explore without long lines or heat exhaustion. You’ll be close by (only a 20-minute drive) to major events like Night of a Thousand Candles at Brookgreen Gardens and the MarshWalk Wonderland of Lights in Murrell’s Inlet, making the hotel the perfect home base for exploring.

    The event coordinator at Ellie Beach Resort even led us on to some fun holiday events nearby, including the lights in Conway, an epic holiday wrapped Bojangles in Conway, and let us know where we could find some cute holiday ornaments for our kids’ keepsakes (The Christmas Mouse is less than a mile away)

    What to Know Before Booking

    • The Ellie Beach Resort is close to the Myrtle Beach International Airport, so you’ll hear and see commercial planes flying over as they land. This might bother some people, but our kids absolutely LOVED it, it was actually really cool watching the planes come in over the ocean. We didn’t have any issues at night or in our room, but if you’re sensitive to sound, it’s a good idea to bring a sound machine.
    • The open-air layout of the resort also means you may want to pack a bit more intentionally. Bring robes and extra towels from home, and if possible, toss in an extra swimsuit to switch into. It can get pretty chilly in the colder months when you’re walking from the pool back to your room.
    • And definitely make time for a visit to the pier, the longest in South Carolina! They offer fishing clinics year-round, and it’s an easy, fun stop for families.

    How to Book

    If your family wants oceanfront fun, multiple pools, and a more peaceful vibe, Ellie Beach Resort is a solid choice. It may not have the flashy extras of a mega-resort, but what it does offer, clean rooms, family-friendly layouts, and flexible pricing, makes it a great value, especially for larger families.

    And if you’re traveling during the holidays or off-season? Even better. You’ll get lower rates, less stress, and a whole lot of festive fun on the coast. Rates start around $123 per night in the off-season, making for a sweet deal.

  • 9 Things Students Need to Do Before They Leave Campus for Break

    I am one of the hundreds, perhaps thousands of people navigating around your college students as they stumble through the waning days of their fall semester. My husband is one of their professors, and our family lives in a residential college for first years at a midwestern university. We are your student’s neighbors and sometimes their friends. We are parents ourselves, but we are not their parents.

    Many students stay through the short fall break and Thanksgiving. It isn’t unusual for us to have a few stragglers over for a meal when the campus is quiet. But almost everyone leaves for the Christmas break.

    For some of your kids, it is their first trip home after the frenetic drop-off at the beginning of the year. They are emotionally and physically exhausted from a long and intense few months here on campus and ready to bust out. They’ve been through a lot — hopefully primarily good things — and they are just making a break for the door as fast as possible.

    But a campus is still a living and breathing place, even when the students are gone, just like your homes continue to operate when they are here with us. Every campus makes impassioned pleas to students with basic holiday departure reminders, but they are routinely ignored in the fog of finals and prolonged adolescence. We Campus Adults would like to partner with you, the Primary Adults in their lives, to ensure that some of this gets through.

    9 things college students need to do before they leave campus for winter break

    1. Implement some basic common-sense security.

    As much as 90% of our campus security team’s time is spent removing tape from the door locks that students put there so their doors don’t latch. Somehow, as bright as they are, students haven’t figured out how to avoid losing their keys.

    On many campuses, this causes significant security equipment malfunctions, especially once the students leave for extended periods. Stop doing this. Be a grownup. Lock your door, and don’t create a security risk for everyone else.

    Put your room key in a safe place over break so you can easily access your room when you return. Also, close your windows and store your bike in your room. If you have a car on campus that you aren’t driving home, be sure it’s locked and appropriately parked. Be a total genius by leaving a spare key on your desk, just in case.

    2. Be a total rock star and strip your bed.

    Be honest- have you changed your sheets once all term? It’s ok — I’m not going to judge. Whether you are planning on taking three months’ worth of laundry home to your Primary Parent or not, it would be a great idea to leave your bed stripped and just let everything air out. And if you happened to wash those sheets or replace them with new ones, congratulations, big kid. That’s the first step in starting the next term on the right foot.

    3. For the love of God, please empty your trash.

    Individual trash cans can render a residential college utterly uninhabitable for the entire holiday break. I have had to unleash my beagle to sniff under doors to identify the location of an unemptied compost bin on Christmas Eve. Rid your room of trash before you abandon ship, PLEASE.

    4. Put that thing away.

    Be aware that the security team on your campus can access your room during the break if there is a safety issue. There are still people living on campus, and various alarms can be triggered. You might want to think about that before you leave anything sensitive and embarrassing lying around your room that you wouldn’t want your mother to see.

    Our campus security chief shared several stories about having to access students’ rooms during the break for many reasons, and trust me — nobody wants to see what you’re into if they don’t have to. You have closets and drawers. Use them.

    5. Your lava lamp and your monitor don’t need you.

    You’ve come to college to figure out how to save the world. How about starting with saving a little energy while you’re away? There is no reason why your electronics need to stay powered up while you’re away for three weeks. Please hit those lights and pull every plug.

    6. Your packages. They are everywhere. And they continue to arrive.

    I bet that Amazon will start building distribution centers right on campuses. Mark my words. But in the meantime, packages pile up like that movie Wall-e, which continues while students are away. Please be sure you’ve picked yours up and take a minute to consider if you have any pending in your absence.

    Maybe stop online shopping after Thanksgiving, to play it safe if you must online shop, direct packages to your holiday destination. And be sure your grandmother knows when you’re leaving campus and unlikely to receive the care package she sent. I refer you back to the trash above.

    7. Your alarm clock will be disassembled.

    Alarm clocks are still a thing, and it’s still not charming when they go off at all hours of the day and night. I am potentially living with 200 individual alarm clocks at the moment, and I cannot guarantee their safety if they start going off unattended on December 21.

    8. If your phone rings from campus, answer it. Seriously.

    It probably won’t, but if you see a number on your phone that you’re pretty sure is within your campus area code, please answer it. It could be your college calling to tell you something important.

    Sometimes some emergencies require Campus Adults to reach out and find you while you are away. Please don’t make it hard for us to reach you. You’re part of our family now too, and, like your Primary Adults, sometimes we need you to pick up the phone for a second.

    9. Come Back. We Really Want You To.

    Sometimes, there’s a bit of a “time to go back ” thing that some students might experience at the end of the break. If you were emotionally exhausted by the year’s first half, have faith that it only gets more accessible from here. You have friends now, and you know your way around. You know what you like to eat in the dining hall, and you’ve learned most of your RA’s names.

    You know the ropes, and they are all here, waiting for you. Don’t worry. Sometimes it takes the whole year for it to feel like home. By Spring, you’ll feel like you own the place. So come on back and turn the lights back on.

    Those of us left behind here on campus will smile and wave as your kids leave. We love living here, but Campus Adults need a break too. Everyone here has a role that changes when the students are gone, and the whole tone of the campus changes.

    We look forward to quiet evenings, abundant parking spots, and no lines at the campus Starbucks.

    Their leave-taking is a much-needed break for everyone except my dog, who enters a serious depression. One of his simple joys is the buffet of discarded food in the hedges and flowerbeds that students, when they are here, leave in their wake. But, we assure him and ourselves that you will all be back soon because we Campus Adults and pets will be so happy to see you again.

  • Dear Kids, I Promise Not to Be a Pain About How We Celebrate Holidays

    Dear Kids, Okay, for starters and the record: this promise is a re-gift. This is an example of doing unto others what was done unto you. Specifically, your wonderful grandparents, did this to your dad and me. I’m trying to repay them forward, not take some jab and get back at them. They’ve made the holidays easy for our family; the best way I know to thank them is to commit to following their lead.

     Of course, I’m making these promises well ahead of when I must keep them. Right now, they’re easy to toss around. When the time comes, I imagine I’ll break them more than once and be tempted to throw them out the window. But as one of my wisest friends says, “If you aim at nothing, you’re sure to hit it.” So I’ll aim to get this right and do my best to hit more than I miss.

    Five promises to my daughters about holidays

    1. I promise not to get hung up on one particular day.

    Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, and all the rest are less dates on the calendar than they are ideas and celebrations. The heart of all the holidays should be lived out year-round, so I promise not to act like we aren’t “truly” celebrating Christmas just because we don’t do it on December 25th or like we’re faking Easter if we don’t break out the ham and coconut cake on…well, whenever Easter falls according to that formula most people (including me) don’t know.

    Somewhere in the neighborhood of the actual holiday would be nice, but it doesn’t have to be an exact address.

    2. I promise not to insist (or, even more maddeningly, insinuate) that our time together has to look a certain way or the same way every year.

    I’m a big fan of how traditions hold families together and create a thread of shared memories that weaves itself through the years. But every old tradition was new once, so if it works out better some years for Thanksgiving to be pizza on the floor instead of turkey at the table, I’m willing to give it a go. Who knows? It could become our new favorite thing. Anyway, the “our” of all this is what I care about most.

    3. I promise to remember that we are not the only people you’re trying to accommodate.

    In years to come, as you widen your circle to include spouses and children and in-laws and friends who count as family, they will factor into how and where you spend your holidays. I certainly can’t blame them for wanting to spend time with you; that’s what I want, too.

    4. I promise to support you as you establish your own traditions.

    I hope you’ve loved some things we’ve “always done” during the holidays enough to keep doing them when you’re not living under our roof.  But I’m also looking forward to watching you do things your way.

    I promise to cheer you on even if supporting your new traditions means giving up some of my old ones. (And even if your “own way” includes getting an artificial Christmas tree after more than two decades of traipsing through tree lots in search of the perfect live one. It’s fine. I’m fine. I’ll send you some pine-scented essential oil as a house — or apartment-warming gift.)

    5. I promise to take you when and where I can get you with joy and gratitude.

    Many years ago, when your dad and I were first married, we went to pick out a Christmas tree at a tree farm that was only a few minutes away from where your grandparents lived. We could drive past their house on the way home, so I suggested we stop by unannounced and surprise them.

    We pulled into their driveway to find the house glowing with light, and when we walked into the house, your grandmother met us wearing a Christmas apron around her waist and pure delight on her face. “I’m even baking cookies!” she exclaimed in satisfaction.

    It wasn’t planned. It wasn’t a tradition. It wasn’t a holiday. It wasn’t the way we’d always done things. But it was a celebration and the best kind of unexpected gift.

    It’s a gift I promise to do my best to give to you. I think I’ll keep my apron handy, just in case.

  • Not being seen is part of parenting a disabled child

    An essay called The Invisible Woman has won the 2025 CBC Nonfiction Prize. It’s written by Laura MacGregor, about parenting her son Matthew with complex medical problems and disabilities. “My job was to care around the clock and fade into the background,” she writes in the piece. “Mothers were only noticed [by professionals] if they were a problem.”

    The title of the essay hearkened back to one of BLOOM’s most-read stories, called The Invisible Mom, which was written by Sue Robins in 2013. In that piece, Robins reflects on the inability of elementary school moms to see her and her son Aaron, who has Down syndrome. 

    She writes about the “gaggle of moms standing in a tight circle, waiting to pick up their kids… In the 10 years I’ve parented my son Aaron, I’ve never cracked that circle. I’ve walked past that circle hundreds of times and nobody has ever shifted, ever so slightly, to give me room to join in.”

    I thought this theme of invisibility was striking. It may mean doctors ignoring the health needs of a mother who pulls all-nighters caring for her medically complex child, or school parents looking the other way when they see the mother who wants her disabled son to have friends.

    If we don’t “see” what is right in front of us, we can pretend it doesn’t exist. In an interview with CBC Books, MacGregor said: “Rather than being supported, I often felt abandoned, invisible and judged by the institutions and professionals that were meant to help. I wrote The Invisible Woman to illuminate the unsustainable responsibilities many mothers shoulder to ensure their child flourishes.”

  • Healthy Life: Ending the day on a positive note: How news can support mental health

    In Finland, some parents have adopted a bedtime routine that seems almost too simple to matter. Each night, they ask their children one question: “What was the last good moment of your day?” No screens, no lectures, no moralizing, just a moment to pause and reflect.

    Psychologists who followed families practicing this ritual for 10 years found remarkable results. Children who answered the question daily were up to 80 percent less anxious by the time they reached their teenage years. Ending the day on a calm note helps the brain wrap up its stress cycle, allowing children to sleep more peacefully and recover emotionally from the day’s challenges.

    The story recently became popular on social media, but it also makes us think about something bigger: why don’t the media talk more about such easy and helpful ways to take care of our mental health? In a news world focused on major crises and troubling stories, reporters don’t often highlight positive developments happening around the world.

    The hidden cost of daily news

    Newsrooms have long followed the mantra: “If it bleeds, it leads.” Stories about crime, disasters, or conflict grab attention – and clicks. But reading it can really affect people’s feelings. The research has shown that many adults experience stress or discomfort when following the news, and some even limit their news consumption because they find it stressful (American Psychological Association 2023). Meanwhile, the Reuters Institute notes that “news avoidance” is rising globally, as people deliberately turn away from stories that make them feel overwhelmed.

    The paradox is clear: journalism aims to inform and empower the public, yet relentless coverage of negative events can leave readers anxious, helpless, or disengaged. Ignoring these effects undercuts the basic mission of the press.

    Learning from Finland: A different approach

    The Finnish bedtime ritual offers a useful metaphor for journalism. Just like children think about their day before going to sleep, readers can better understand the news if stories include background information, ideas for fixing problems, and messages of hope.

    This is the philosophy behind solutions journalism, promoted by groups like the Solutions Journalism Network. It doesn’t mean sugar-coating problems or avoiding hard truths. Instead, it means telling the full story, highlighting not just the problem but also credible responses and examples of success.

    For instance, when reporting on youth anxiety, a journalist could explore programs in schools, community initiatives, or national policies that help children build resilience. Research from the University of Texas at Austin’s Engaging News Project found that readers of solutions-focused articles felt more optimistic about the issue and more confident that there were effective ways to address it, compared with readers who only saw problem-focused news. Engaging audiences this way also strengthens trust in media, an important advantage at a time when many people doubt the news.

    Small shifts, big impact

    In many ways, journalism can borrow inspiration from the Finnish habit of ending the day with a moment of reflection. It’s a simple cultural practice, not a rule, but it shows how small habits can shape how people process the world around them and be less anxious.

    Similarly, there are a few modest adjustments journalists can consider when thinking about how audiences absorb the news:

    Language: choosing clear, calm wording instead of dramatic phrasing when covering difficult subjects.

    Balance: showing not only the problem, but also what people or communities are trying in response.

    Context: helping readers understand why something is happening, not only that it happened.

    Follow-up: returning to stories so people see what changed over time.

    They are reflections on how reporting might support a clearer and more grounded understanding of events. And just as the Finnish ritual helps families end the day with perspective, these small journalistic choices can help audiences navigate the news with a better coherence.

    Real-world examples

    Some news outlets are already using solutions journalism. The Guardian’s Upside series, BBC’s People Fixing the World, and CBC’s What On Earth? spotlight serious issues, like climate, health, and inequality, while focusing on real-world innovations and responses. These programs illustrate that news can inform without overwhelming, by highlighting constructive change.

    Closing the cycle

    In a world where headlines bombard us with crisis after crisis, journalism can offer closure. Just as the Finnish ritual encourages children to reflect on a positive moment before sleep, journalists can help audiences finish the news cycle feeling informed rather than exhausted. The goal isn’t “feel-good news” – it’s resilience and understanding in an age of constant noise.

    Journalism has always been about sharing information. Today, it can also help improve our mental well-being, one calming story at a time.

  • “The Secret to Communicating with Rejection-Sensitive Kids”

    We all have childhood memories of upsetting an adult — of knowing we’re in trouble for disappointing a grown-up in one way or another. We remember the weight of our guilt and feeling like we were bad to the core.

    As much as we remember the sighs, yells, and criticisms, we also remember the moments we were treated with compassion and understanding. The adults in our lives may not have known it, but in those empathetic moments, they were applying the principles of nonviolent communication with us.

    Nonviolent communication (NVC) is an approach that children with ADHD and rejection sensitivity respond especially well to, in my view. As a parent with ADHD raising a child with ADHD, it’s an approach I try to embody every day.

    What Is Nonviolent Communication?

    NVC, created by Marshall Rosenberg, Ph.D., is designed to help people manage conflict (in relationships, work, school, etc.) and express themselves without placing blame, shame, or guilt on others.

    NVC centers on four components:

    • Observation: focusing on what you see or hear, not on evaluations or labels.
    • Feelings: identifying and expressing your actual emotions, not thoughts disguised as feelings.
    • Needs: recognizing that feelings arise from needs being met or unmet.
    • Requests: asking for clear, specific actions to help meet needs.

    There is much more to NVC, but its most important principle is that it requires us to take off our “adult” hats and become equals with our children. As someone who was raised in a household where children were seen, not heard, I know this is easier said than done. But a child cannot learn respect until they experience respect. And children learn to communicate effectively by being communicated with effectively.

    5 Ways to Practice Nonviolent Communication with ADHD Kids

    Follow these steps to incorporate the principles of NVC into your daily interactions with your child and improve your relationship with them.

    1. Use “I” statements.

    Instead of: Stop leaving your things everywhere! I tripped over your stuff again! Don’t be so lazy!

    Nonviolent reaction: I see your shoes and backpack are on the floor. I feel frustrated when I trip over your things. I also get hurt. Please take the next minute to put your things away.

    2. Avoid hyperbole.

    Try not to exaggerate your child’s behaviors and avoid absolutes like “always” or “never.” Be mindful of thoughts masquerading as feelings.

    Instead of: You always leave the fridge door open and walk away! You never listen to me when I ask you to be more careful. I feel like you just don’t care.

    Nonviolent reaction: I came home today and found the fridge door open. I am annoyed that some of our food is now spoiled, and we need to replace it.

    3. I feel __ because

    Connect your feelings to your needs to help your child see why something matters.

    Instead of: Why are you making so much noise? Can’t you see that I’m trying to work?

    Nonviolent reaction: I feel tense because I need to focus on my work but keep getting distracted by these noises. Would you lower your voice/tablet volume or move to another room so I can finish?

    4. Focus on responsibility, not blame.

    Let’s take it back to the open fridge door example of above.

    Instead of: The food is all spoiled and it’s all your fault.

    Nonviolent reaction: We’ll need to buy fresh food. Can you help by contributing from your allowance?

    This principle is absolutely important for our rejection-sensitive children. Shifting from blame to responsibility reduces paralyzing shame and lets children focus on how they can make things better.

    5. Let your child speak.

    Even if they are whiny or hormonal. Even if they cry and seem irrational. Even if they blame everything else under the sun for their behavior, you must let your child speak. Your job is to listen and validate.

    Instead of: It’s not my fault you don’t get your homework done on time! If you can’t speak to me with respect, then I don’t want to speak to you at all.

    In August 2024 we interviewed the author of a British study that found thoughts of suicide common in parents raising disabled children. Since then it’s been our most read BLOOM story, reaching over 6,100 people. 

    The study, published in the Archives of Suicide Research, found over 40 per cent of 750 parents had thought about or planned suicide while caring for their child with a disability or chronic illness. Over half of those had never told anyone or sought help.
