The 2024 Carolina Renaissance Festival takes place on Saturdays and Sundays, October 5th – November 24, 2024.
I recently took my kids to their first Renaissance festival in Charlotte, and they had a great time! The Annual Carolina Renaissance Festival and Artisan Marketplace are fun for the whole family. We wove our way through the delicious smell of roasted turkey legs, through artisan shops, past sword jugglers, falconry demonstrations, and a live jousting tournament. It was a blast!
Info About The Renaissance Festival in Charlotte, North Carolina
There is so much to do and see; you will need to plan on spending the day. I found that some of my friends have been coming to this very ren-fest since they were school-age tots, it is that good! A map at the front will guide you to tons of show offerings. Most showtimes will rotate around again if you happen to miss something you wanted to see.
Maybe we are some nature geeks, but the falconry show is a must! Swooping owls, vultures, hawks, and of course, falcons wow the crowd as you feel the air whoosh overhead. The jousting tournament is top-notch. Choose your side of the arena to take a seat, and you have chosen your valiant knight. Jousting passes will have you on the edge of your chair! The shields and lance pieces used in the tournament are available for purchase immediately after the show – this was one souvenir my boys had to have!
Other attractions are nearly endless: petting farm, rides, games, comedy, magic, pirates, royal courts, Robin Hood, fairies, glass blowing, blacksmiths, pottery making, jewelry, leather works, and on, and on, and on!

Jaggery (powdered or syrup): 3 tbsp
Instructions:
If using un-popped amaranth grains, pressure cook them for 3 whistles on medium flame with 1 cup of water. If using popped ready-to-cook amaranth grains, skip this step.
Measure the jaggery and keep it aside. If using jaggery, melt it and strain the water to remove impurities.
Take 1 cup of popped amaranth grains in a bowl.
Pour the milk into a thick-bottomed vessel and bring it to a boil over low-medium flame.
Once the milk is boiled, add the popped or pressure-cooked amaranth grains to it. Mix well and cook on low flame for 5 minutes until the kheer becomes slightly thick. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
Add powdered cardamom and jaggery (powdered or syrup) to the mixture. Mix well and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes.
In the meantime, take a small pan and add a teaspoon of ghee. Roast the almonds for a minute. Remove from the pan once done and set aside.
Once the kheer is ready, add the ghee-roasted almonds. Stir well and switch off the flame.
For babies below one year, add 2 teaspoons of nuts powder instead of whole nuts.

At first glance, some of my ADHD traits make me very ill-suited to my job as a college lecturer. My slippery focus and shoddy working memory make the piles of admin work painful. Trying to map out a long course makes me want to smash my head into a smartboard.
Few of my colleagues loathe the bits I hate with quite the passion that I do, so I beat myself up for making a meal of the stuff that’s meant to be simple.
But there’s a flip side, too. The more I talk to colleagues about my fresh diagnosis (ADHD, inattentive type), the more I see that others grapple daily with different demons. And some of the things that frighten or frustrate them about teaching come as naturally to me as breathing.
Teaching with ADHD: The Traits That Make Me a Better Educator
1. Improvisation
Like many with ADHD, I work well under pressure. I struggle to focus without it, in fact, so I’ve had a lifetime of practice.
The upshot is that I’m never knocked off balance by last-minute changes or questions I didn’t see coming. I love taking detours in lessons or going deeper to clear up confusion.
Learning is a two-way conversation for me. Being happy to improvise helps me keep everyone in it.
2. A Sense of Humor
I try to make people laugh all the time. I think I learned young that it won me approval, preempted mockery, and defused the tension I would otherwise sponge up myself.
And my always-on Default Mode Network loves whispering jokes in my ear. I find it hard not to speak them out loud.
As compulsions go, it’s a lucky one. A sense of humor is a powerful tool in the classroom. It’s so much easier to build rapport, nip conflicts in the bud, and make lessons engaging and productive when you can see the funny side and share it. People learn better when they’re feeling good, too.
I’m also a closet show-off, so making an audience laugh (even if it’s captive) lifts my own mood and keeps my stress levels in check.
3. The Ability to Plan Under Pressure
Long-term projects are my nemesis. Chipping away at a faraway goal deprives me of the hit I need right now, this minute.
Weirdly, that’s where teaching works for me. I don’t sit down on a Sunday to plan. (I can’t. I’ve tried. It’s fruitless.) But the very tight deadline of an imminent lesson gives my distractible brain no choice but to snap into action. When it does, it’s with supercharged clarity and speed.
A sea of expectant faces is a sufficiently scary prospect to kickstart my concentration and wrestle floating, fragmented ideas into an anchored, coherent whole. The last half-hour before a lesson starts is when my plan comes together. Even if I’m still on the bus.
Because I work best this way, weekends are mainly my own.
4. Creativity and Competitiveness
‘Teacher talk time’ is part of my job. Some things just need explaining. But I drift off when I’m talked at for too long myself and I don’t want my learners to check out because I’ve bored them.
So I break up exposition with chats, games, and quizzes to give them chance to think and engage.
Competition cranks my focus up, too, so I use it with students as well. They sit up and dig deeper when victory’s at stake. A lively 10-minute grammar-off can save a lesson from sinking.
5. Deep Empathy
As a super-sensitive person with ADHD, I know first-hand how negative emotions can torpedo efforts to learn.
That awareness is useful because lots of my students have big stresses that mess with their concentration. They come from all over the world and have issues ranging from PTSD and homelessness to fears for family in war zones. Things I cannot imagine.
I can never solve their problems. What I can provide, thanks to empathy, is a warm, inclusive environment where people feel safe and valued.
I can also lend my ear after class where that’s what a person wants. Because of the way I’m built, it never feels like a chore.
Teaching with ADHD: Shedding Shame and Cultivating Gratitude
There will probably always be bits of my job I find hard because they’re dull. I’ve felt shame about that at times and suspected I’m lazy or weak. Now that I’m certain I’m neither, I can be more patient with myself and calmer when I’m tackling the tough stuff. And I can see much more clearly the many upsides of ADHD.
Being up front with others and listening to their own unique challenges has opened my eyes to how well my brain serves me at work. It has taught me to put much more store in the strengths I have — creativity, compassion and last-minute focus, for example —that some others don’t, and which are very likely down to the way I’m wired.

The Sapphire Valley. Even the name was beautiful. My family’s first family vacation once we moved to Greenville was to the Sapphire Valley and it was more than I ever hoped it would be. Family vacations aren’t really vacations when you have kids, right? It’s more like parenting, just in a different place and with less sleep.
But this trip was so awesome and relaxing despite the lack of our usual sleep routine. It was filled with adventure, waterfalls, good food, stunning beauty, and a feeling that we experienced a little bit of heaven. Since that trip, I’ve gone back many times, whether for another family trip, day trips, and weekend excursions.
The Sapphire Valley and Cashiers, NC is one of those true hidden gems, a small mountain town that consists of a handful of shops and restaurants and leaves the rest up to nature. I’ll tell you all about where to hike, where to stay, where to eat, and seasonal activities so you can hopefully plan your own family’s adventure to this little slice of heaven.

About the Land of Waterfalls
The Sapphire Valley and Cashiers, NC is nicknamed the “Land of Waterfalls” because, well, it is. There are hundreds of waterfalls in the area due to the mountainous terrain and many of them don’t involve long hikes. If you’re into long hikes, don’t worry, there are definitely places to do that here. And if you’re looking for a more family-friendly adventure, there are plenty of places to do that, too.
Cashiers, NC sits 3,487 feet above sea level right near the Eastern Continental Divide. Highway 64 is the main road that goes through it and into Highlands to the West or to Rosman and Brevard to the East. It’s a really small town, only 2,500 people most of the year, which bumps up to 10,000 during the summer months. The town is so cute, too, with a beautiful park, the Village Green, a little hiking store, some clothing shops, a farmers market, and events throughout the year, including a wonderful Christmas parade.
Being so high in the mountains, Cashiers is almost always 10 to 15 degrees cooler than the foothills, which is so refreshing during the summer especially. When you pack, keep that in mind and bring an extra jacket or sweater.
What to do in the Cashiers area
Cashiers is wonderful for all kinds of activities or for doing nothing at all. You can paddleboard, swim, hike, practice photography, eat, ski, snow tube, or just cozy up by a fireplace and read a book. I’ll tell you about most of these activities here.
Hiking in Cashiers
Let’s start with hiking. I’ve done a lot of trails in this area and I’ll give you the rundown of what to expect for each one here.
Whiteside Mountain
This two-mile loop is about 13 minutes from the center of Cashiers and oh my gosh, what a view. Be sure to go clockwise or you’ll be going up a lot of steps. The reason I love this hike is that for the backend of it, you have mountain views the whole way. You are walking along the mountain ridge with steel ropes. Just watch your kids and if you go during the winter months, this could be a very slippery hike (that I wouldn’t recommend). Also note that you have to pay a $3 fee at the parking lot so bring cash or you can use your phone to pay via a QR code.
Whiteside Mountain
Silver Run Falls
This isn’t necessarily a hike. It’s more like a five-minute trek through the woods to a beautiful waterfall with a swimming hole. The water is really cold but feels awesome on a hot day and it’s only five minutes from the center of Cashiers on the left-hand side of the road. The pull-off only fits about five cars.
Glen Falls
Glen Falls is about 25 minutes south of Cashiers and is a 2.5-mile round-trip hike. It’s easy on the way down and there are several overlooks to view the massive waterfall. The hike to the bottom gets you to a small sandy beach, perfect for a picnic and rest since you’ll have to hike all the way back up!
Black Balsam
l had been wanting to get to Black Balsam for years and finally made it. Oh boy, it was worth it. You get 360-degree views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It’s right near Graveyard Fields (also a great hiking spot with waterfalls) and Devils Courthouse. It’s about an hour from Cashiers and the hike is a moderate one, going uphill in the beginning and then downhill on your way back to the car. It’s only about 1.5 miles total and kid-friendly.
We saw so many kids climbing all the rocks and loving it. Get there early during weekends especially as this is a popular hike and it gets crowded. If there isn’t parking there, head up the road a bit to park at the lot at the end of the road and hike to Sam Knob, which is also an amazing 2.5 mile hike.

High Falls
There are two trailheads to High Falls – one is the short but steep 1.4 mile roundtrip trail from the Pines Recreation Area at Lake Glenville and the other is a steadier and longer at around 4 miles long. High Falls is beautiful either way but be sure to stay off the rocks around the waterfall and check to make sure the dam isn’t being released when you go. It’s amazing to see but you need to make sure you are out of the way downstream since the trickle of the waterfall turns into a powerful churn.

Devils Courthouse
Go here in the spring for a possible look at the peregrine falcons that will sometimes nest on the ridge. The overlook is on the Blue Ridge Parkway and the hike is straight up but it’s not too far, just a half mile or so. The top is gorgeous and you can see both sunrises and sunsets from here.
Schoolhouse Falls
Located in the Panthertown Valley, Schoolhouse Falls is a beautiful spot. Park at the Panthertown Trailhead off Cold Mountain Road and take the pink-blazed trail to Little Green Trail and you will hear the waterfall. Cross the boardwalk and you are there. It is one of my favorite waterfalls and an easy 2.5 mile roundtrip hike.
You’ll gain some elevation on the way back as you hike back up switchbacks to your car but it’s not that difficult. The pool below Schoolhouse Falls is crystal clear and perfect for swimming but I particularly love this waterfall because you can walk behind it! It’s about 45 minutes from Cashiers.

Next up is swimming near Cashiers. You can swim at Silver Run Falls and Schoolhouse Falls but here are a couple of other spots to get wet during the warmer months.
Sliding Rock
This is not the Sliding Rock you may have heard about in Pisgah Forest. Nope, this is the smaller but just as fun and nowhere near as crowded Sliding Rock in Cashiers. It’s less than 10 minutes from downtown Cashiers and down a short trail. There’s a little sandy beach and you can slide down the waterfall all you want or jump into the potholes in the middle of rock formations on the waterfall itself if you are daring. Definitely watch your kids here though.

Pines Recreation Area
Not 15 minutes from downtown Cashiers is the beautiful Lake Glenville. You can swim in the lake at the Pines Recreation Area on the north end of the lake. It has a little sandy beach and a fishing pier as well – so pretty! And it’s free. Also, you can access the south trailhead (the shorter but steeper trail) to High Falls.

If you want to get on the water at Lake Glenville, take an a waterfall cruise with Lake Glenville Scenic Waterfalls Cruise with Captain Mark Wise. The two-hour boat tour is great for any age or ability and you’ll learn all about the lake, its history, its diverse ecosystems, and you will get to see waterfalls that are only accessible by boat.
You can also rent kayaks, paddleboards, and pontoon boats from local marinas or drop in your own small water vessels at the Pines Recreation Area.
The Village Green
The Village Green is a huge, 12.5 acre green space right in the heart of Cashiers with art sculptures, a boardwalk path through the woods, and an old school wooden playground that my kids did not want to leave. This is where many events happen in Cashiers as well so if you’re not sure where an event is taking place, it’s probably here. I think the playground is the best part though! It is fenced in and has swings, a tire swing, lots of obstacles, and a tot play space.

Fly Fishing
Even though I’ve never done fly fishing (but I really would love to try it), I love watching the fishermen on the water whenever I see them during hikes. They look so relaxed. The Tuckaseegee River flows through a scenic mountain valley and several quaint communities up in Western NC. Jackson County is known as the North Carolina Trout Capital and home of the Western North Carolina Fly Fishing Trail.
The river is very accessible for fishing and teeming with brown, rainbow, and brook trout – the river is stocked with almost 93,000 fish annually. Winter is actually prime fly-fishing time and because they are often feeding more during the day and since the state stocks the river in the fall, you have a really good chance of getting bites. You can bring your own equipment or rent from local outfitters.
Seasonal Fun in Cashiers
Cashiers has four defined seasons, all of which have their own beauty, events, and cool things to do. Here are our favorites:
Outhouse Races
Every year, the Sapphire Valley Resort hosts the Outhouse Races where teams decorate an outhouse, put it on skis, and then race it down the mountain. It is exactly how it sounds and it is really fun to watch. The teams are really creative and all use some kind of toilet humor but it’s in such great fun that when people are cheering for their favorite outhouse, you can really get into it. It usually happens in February.

Snow Tubing & Skiing
During the winter, you can ski and snow tube at the Sapphire Valley Resort. I’m not a skier but my kids and I have done snow tubing there and it’s a lot of fun! Snow tubing at Sapphire Valley happens at Frozen Falls Tube Park, right behind the community center and next to the bunny slope. Snow tubing tickets are sold at the community center and are $35/person or if you have an amenity card, it is $26/person. You can’t buy them in advance so you need to show up, sign a waiver, and purchase your ticket. You can purchase your weekend ticket in person starting at 9 am on Fridays. They do take group reservations of more than 10 people and those must be made a week ahead of time. On busy days, they do sell out so plan accordingly (keep reading for backup plans). Each tubing session lasts for 1.75 hours and start every two hours beginning usually at 10 am, although that can change. Check the schedule before you go.
There are no height restrictions so kids can definitely do snow tubing but they will be in their own tube. My kids (ages 9 and 5) had a blast. There is nothing quite like flying down a mountain on a giant tube! It’s exhilarating and a bit scary at first. The run is about 500 feet with a drop of 60 feet. To get up the mountain, you have to stand on an escalator-type contraption, like the kind you use at the airport that is totally flat and moves. There are staff that help to get you and your tube on it.
The Cashiers Christmas Parade
If you’ve ever wanted to experience a small, mountain town at Christmas, this is your chance. The annual Cashiers Christmas parade happens every December and it includes fire trucks, marching bands, and vintage cars. It will happen on Saturday, December 7th, 2024 at 3 pm.
The Shadow of the Bear
This is a tricky one to catch but if you do, prepare to be blown away. It’s only tricky because you need a clear sky and it only happens twice a year for a few weeks – the Shadow of the Bear is literally a shadow that looks like a bear next to Whiteside Mountain that appears in late October/early November and again in early February. You can see it about 30 minutes before sunset off of a pull off on Highway 64 right on the Jackson County border. I’ve done it with my kids and we had such a fun time talking with the people watching it with us because none of us thought that the shadow looked like a bear! You really need to watch your kids though since you’re on the side of the road. Get there early to get parking and bring a jacket since it’s quite chilly up there that time of year.

Where to Eat in Cashiers
Cashiers is small so dining options are limited. My favorite spot to eat is Slabtown Pizza, just a minute or two from the heart of Cashiers. They have pizza, salads, and local craft beer. We ordered a large cheese pizza, small Greek salad, and waffle fries for just myself and my two kids and had leftovers. You order at the counter (or call ahead for pickup) and take a seat and wait for your food.
We also ate one afternoon at Happs right next to Lake Glenville. This place is fantastic because they have a big outdoor play area with cornhole and mini-golf, which is a great distraction for kids while they wait for their meals. They have burgers, sandwiches, and salads plus a huge bar, big TVs, both indoor and outdoor seating, and a big fireplace.
Happs Barn & Grill
For coffee and pastries, I recommend Buck’s Coffee Shop at the main intersection of 64 & 107. The place is very laid back with bagels, pastries, breakfast sandwiches, and a latte that I’m still thinking about days later. If you’re working while up in Cashiers, this is a great spot to bring your laptop and relax while making your deadlines. They’ve got wifi and lots of comfortable seating.
Where to Stay in Cashiers
Most of the times I’ve visited Cashiers or Lake Glenville, I’ve stayed in an AirBnB or VRBO at the Sapphire Valley Resort. Staying at the resort is fantastic because it has an indoor pool and sauna, hot tubs, mini-golf, a gym, arcade room, and outdoor pool. You have to purchase an amenity card ($5/day in 2024) but it was totally worth it for the downtime moments between all our adventures to swim in the pools and relax in the sauna.
This is especially worth it if you’re visiting during the colder months because you can use the indoor pool and sauna no matter the weather! Also, if you’re staying at the resort, you can rent kayaks or paddleboards at Lake Fairfield. That was the very first time I tried paddleboarding, which kindled my love for it!
The AirBnB I stayed at in Lake Glenville though was just amazing. I really didn’t want to leave. While we didn’t have lake access, we did have a breathtaking view of the lake, which was one hundred percent worth it. Definitely check AirBnB or VRBO for listings that fit your family’s needs and budget.

The other place I’ve stayed while visiting Cashiers is the Hampton Inn & Suites directly across the street from the resort. This hotel was awesome for several reasons:
It has an indoor pool and hot tub, which we made use of when our initial tubing time was unavailable
It has a free, hot breakfast in the morning included which has everything from waffles to eggs to smoothies to oatmeal and bagels
The location is just perfect as it took us no time to get to the resort
It is super clean and the staff are friendly and helpful
It has free coffee, tea, and hot chocolate all day long
Great option for budget-conscious families (we saw so many families there!)
The wintertime is this area’s slower season so prices are probably as cheap as they will be all year. This season is often called the “Secret Season” because of the lower cost of trips there.
For a more luxurious and high end vacation experience in Cashiers, take a look at the High Hampton Resort. It has a gold course, spa, and beautiful rooms.
Where to Shop in Cashiers
We loved shopping at the Cashiers Farmers Market, a standalone market with everything from bacon to local honey to fruit and produce to pottery and seasonal items. They also have wine, chocolate, and you can order lunch and eat at the picnic tables next door.

We also really loved the Cashiers Candy Shoppe, which has an eclectic array of clothing, home goods, and an entire room dedicated to candy and chocolate. It was amazing. But the best part for my kids was petting the two Golden Retrievers that greeted guests. They were adorable and one rolled over immediately for tummy pets when one of my daughters was giving her some love. So, so cute.
My Last Thoughts on Cashiers
Know this: if you visit Cashiers, you may leave a little piece of your heart there. If you like hiking, swimming, boating, sliding down waterfalls, and spending time with family, the Sapphire Valley may swoop in and whisk you away. I have fallen so hard for this tiny slice of heaven and go as often as I can. I have made some wonderful memories with my family here and truly hope I get to make many more.
And here’s another confession – I grew up close to the beach in New Jersey and I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m more of a mountain-lover than beach-lover. It seems like a betrayal of my roots. But it’s not. I’m setting down new roots for my own little kids to make their own memories and hopefully fall in love with the outdoors like I did.

I just read a book that stopped me in my tracks. It’s about the lack of Black and brown disabled voices in America’s disability rights movement. It’s written by Dara Baldwin, a Black disability activist and policy maker in Washington, D.C. Dara has worked with dozens of disability rights groups and on over 25 federal bills signed by five presidents. In To Be A Problem: A Black Woman’s Survival in the Racist Disability Rights Movement she recounts being the only person of colour at national policy tables, and working with disability groups led by non-disabled white people. Dara herself does not have a disability. We spoke about her book.
BLOOM: When you were on task forces for the Consortium for Constituents with Disabilities (CDC), you would walk in the room and be the only Black person. You also write that only seven of over 100 CDC organizations are run by disabled people. What impact does it have when BIPOC and disabled people are not at the disability policy table?
Dara Baldwin: The book is about telling the truth and having hope to make changes. Not having representation in these rooms affects what issues are put on the agenda, what laws we go for, and how we do things.
Let’s take education equity. The top two issues for most disability rights organizations are inclusion of students and ending restraint and seclusion in schools. Restraint and seclusion is done at a higher rate to students with disabilities and especially to Black and brown disabled students.
BIPOC families have many other concerns. They’re concerned about school safety, about the school-to-prison pipeline that affects Black and brown students, the use of corporal punishment in states like Alabama and Mississippi, and having police in our schools.
BIPOC families want to see more social workers and mental health workers in schools providing more counselling. They want the system to be educational, not punitive.
They want to make sure that IDEA is fully funded, so their children can get physio and occupational therapy in school rather than families having to find it and pay for it.
Upper white middle class families have insurance to cover their kids’ therapists or can afford to pay for it. Privileged white people don’t understand what it means to be afraid of the police, and why police are not the go-to for our safety. They tend to want more police.
The voices and stories and people who live closest to the problem are closest to the solution. You can’t have a homogenous table of people and create really good social justice policy. When you don’t have Black and brown families sitting at the table, issues of importance to them are not going to come up.
Housing is another example. I’ve been on task forces that are made up of wealthy white middle class people. They’re going to be able to find housing for their family members. They can’t relate to the issues of being unhoused or needing housing. They don’t worry about Section 811 vouchers, which is the program that assists those with disabilities to fund housing. The number of disabled people is growing, but Congress isn’t funding that increase. When you don’t have Black and brown voices at the table, lobbying Congress for more money to get more vouchers is not on the agenda.
BLOOM: You note that at a CCD annual general meeting, all of the award winners were white. Also, you write about how the contributions of BIPOC people have been erased from the history of disability rights in the U.S. And you mentioned panel discussions about bias and policing with only white speakers. Why is the disability rights movement so unable to see how they exclude people?
Dara Baldwin: When you deal with white people, they own the table. They don’t think there’s anything wrong. You mentioned those panels about law enforcement and juvenile justice. Their attitude is ‘We’re doing it out of compassion. We’re the smart ones, the ones with the money, we’re the ones who can get this done. Black people can’t get this done.”
When you have a white panel on bias and policing and everyone in the audience is white, there’s no accountability. When I ask ‘How can you have this panel to discuss policing and the disabled and all the people are white?,’ I’m positioned as the angry Black woman.
BLOOM: Are there BIPOC disabled activist groups you recommend?
Dara Baldwin: There are a few of them. One is NAMED Advocates (The National Alliance of Melanin Disabled Advocates) run by Keri Grey. Another is Sins Invalid. They do training and conversations around disability stuff. Keith Jones does a lot around the entertainment community and education.
Unfortunately there aren’t a lot of BIPOC groups because the white organizations keep taking most of the money. They claim to be doing racial justice work and the funders give them the money, but it’s obvious the work doesn’t get done, because there’s no change.
BLOOM: What do organizations tell you when you ask why they don’t have more BIPOC disabled people on staff, in leadership positions and on the board?
Dara Baldwin: They say we can’t find them and it’s hard to hire them. Can you help us find those people? It’s the same excuse. It’s a cop-out. Why would you hire a Black person when the funders keep funding you? There’s no accountability until a funder says: ‘You must have so many Black and disabled people on your staff before we’re cutting you another check.” That’s not happening, and why the cycle continues.
When I was at the Center for Independent Living, we had in our charter that 51 per cent of staff had to be disabled.
Being inclusive or using disability justice as a framework means having a charter or by-laws or policy that says a certain percentage—such as 60 per cent—of staff will be BIPOC disabled, and the same with the board.
I recommend we create a number of organizations that are run by and for BIPOC disabled folks. They should have a rule that for the first 25 years, which is a generation, only BIPOC, multiply marginalized disabled people will be hired in all positions, and make up 100 per cent of the board.
The key here is to have a mixture of people, so it’s intersectional. This must apply to boards as well. Currently we tend to have one or two token disabled people on a board of 20 people. And those disabled people are not in leadership positions. People don’t understand that you do what your board asks you to do. That’s where the power sits. The only way change can happen is through disruption—whether it’s political or programs and process.
BLOOM: Are white parents of people with disabilities often on boards?
Dara Baldwin: Yes, you’ll see parents on the board as opposed to disabled people.
BLOOM: In your book, you recommend a true account of BIPOC contributions to how disability laws were achieved, and a celebration of Black activists. Where can we learn more about Black voices in the movement?

The menu offers so many options you might be overwhelmed. If you are indecisive like I am, sometimes it’s best to pre-game a menu like this. Sometimes it doesn’t help when everything looks delicious, as is the case at Tupelo Honey Cafe.
Southern-inspired veggies, paired with their famous fried chicken, make a simple choice that will result in a meal you won’t be disappointed about. However, the problems begin when your eyes veer past that first part of the menu to all of the other items offered.
Do you choose that fried chicken with waffles or sweet potato pancakes? Do you skip the fried chicken altogether and choose the shrimp and grits?
When I visited Tupelo Honey Cafe, I ordered the Mac-N-Cheese Waffles with “Asheville” hot chicken. It was delicious, and I paired it with a side dish of the Crispy Brussel Sprouts. It hit the spot, and my only complaint is there never seems to be enough Brussel sprouts so that I’m not sad when they are gone. I’ll need to order an entree-sized serving of them and call it my meal one of these days.

My son decided he wanted to have his birthday dinner at Hard Rock Café in Atlanta. What 11 year old does that? Hey, it was cheaper than most venues, so count me in! We decided to turn it into an overnight trip and check out LEGO™ Discovery Center while there. The overnight stay was an added bonus for our family, but it is completely doable as a day-trip.
I visited Trip Advisor and several other sites and found mixed reviews. I had no idea what to expect.
LEGO™ Discovery Center is located at Phipps Plaza. I plugged the address into my Google GPS and had no problem. Driving through Atlanta is never high on my “To Do” list, but we survived. You’ll want to avoid morning rush hour traffic. If you don’t, pack a picnic because you’ll be eating lunch on 85!
We parked on the upper parking deck of the mall and entered through the door of one of the department stores. LEGO Land is located in the middle of the mall on the third floor. It doesn’t matter which door you use. Take the escalators. If your kids are anything like ours, they’ll enjoy this as much as the rides inside the building. Doors open at 10 am.

The lines were well organized. Once you pay and walk through the front door, you’re pretty much on your own. Pick up a brochure/map at the entrance. There is SO MUCH to see! Most everything is interactive and hands on.
Spaceship Build was a BIG hit with our crew. There are stations for the littles (and not-so littles) to build spaceships and a “control center” where they can fly their own ship. None of those compare to the space ship that actually launches every five minutes, complete with smoke and a countdown! I caught this magic on video. The boys have watched it multiple times.
Mini Land was really cool. While it’s not hands-on, we had fun looking at the replicas of the historical places around Atlanta. I had to keep reminding myself that everything is actually built out of LEGOS. It’s unreal.
Duplo Park is the perfect destination for the smallest visitors. There is a play zone as well as soft/hard blocks. Because my kids are older, we didn’t spend time here, but I poked my head in to see what it was about. Everything looked clean and kids were having a good time.
4D Cinema offers multiple movies featuring your favorite LEGO characters! Photos/videos are not allowed during the movie. This is unfortunate because the smiles on our kids’ faces were priceless. They LOVED getting wet! Oops… I hope I didn’t give anything away!
Your kiddos will love the Create and Test area. This is the spot where you build your own car to race down the ramps.
If you asked our kids to tell you their favorite thing about LEGOLAND, Pirate Adventure Island would be the unanimous choice. You could easily spend half a day in this play area. There is a huge water table, a slide and several climbing sections. This area reminded me of The Children’s Museum of the Upstate.
One of the biggest complaints in the online reviews was how expensive the food is in the Café. There is another option – a Food Court right outside the entrance and we ate there. An employee, stationed at the exit, will stamp your hand for reentry. There is not an extensive selection of restaurants to choose from but it’s certainly the best option. There is a Moe’s and everyone loves Moe’s, right?!
My son was just traveling to the US, and the “unthinkable” happened. When he was in the middle of Manhattan, trying to find his way to New Jersey, the day before he had to take the bus to camp, his phone broke. There was a surprise cloudburst and despite trying to keep his phone dry, because of a slight crack that it got, the phone broke. Lately, my kids have been really obsessed with Peach flavor Fuze Tea and I knew I needed to try making it on my own at home. My Soda Stream machine broke, so making homemade Sprite no longer is an option, and there’s only so many times I want to make lemonade. And my sports drink is a staple, so nothing special anymore. So I had been buying drinks for my kids for certain occasions, with Peach Fuze Tea being one of them, and then I had the thought that I could probably make it myself, since it is just iced tea.
I used my copycat Lipton’s Lemon Iced Tea as a base, then switched around the teabags to find the right ratio, and here it is. My kids love it. Friends who tasted it say it tastes very much like Fuze Tea- not 100% but about 95% which, in my books, is close enough.
4 bags of plain black tea 2 bags peach tea 1 1/2 cups boiling water
Iced Tea Ingredients
1/2 cup tea concentrate 1/4 cup lemon juice 1/2 cup sugar 8 cups water Ice cubes (optional)
Instructions:
1. Pour boiling water over tea bags. Let sit for 5 minutes, at least, ideally longer,
2. To make the iced tea, mix the tea concentrate with the rest of the ingredients. If using a 2 liter pitcher or bottle, put in the ingredients and then fill it up the rest of the way with water and ice (that works out to be about 8 cups and saves time.)
3. Mix well until the sugar is fully dissolved.
4. Serve cold, either immediately or after refrigeration.

Affectionately referred to as TSC, Tractor Supply Co. is an absolute diamond-in-the-rough. Before there was “Hearth and Home” and “Magnolia” brands, there was TSC. All the galvanized and farmhouse beauty but in authentic form. Besides the numerous unconventional home décor options, the aisles of pet supplies and farm animal care are wonderfully priced and, quite honestly, fascinating to walk through.
Perusing the rows of farm equipment is a bonus educational opportunity for both parent and child. Seeds and rain boots are a great price and nostalgic kids’ toys at the front of the store offer some great browsing opportunities. Before you know it, you’ll be headed home with a cow-dressed Cabbage Patch doll, a book on backyard duck ownership, several packets of heirloom cucumbers seeds, a hand-carved wooden sign for the kitchen, a galvanized planter for the front porch, tiny Paw Patrol work gloves, and a 3-year plan for chicken coops and chicks from Tractor Supply.
Did I mention the live chicks?
Beginning in March, Tractor Supply carries live chicks. You can’t hold them, but just observing the mangers of fluffy chicks proves plenty entertaining for children–at least 15 minutes of contained time for you to enjoy your latte without pushing a cart. Just settle in with your copy of Beginner’s Composting and let your children enjoy the wonder of fresh, playful chickies. Well, not truly. Please watch your kids in stores instead of reading and be an upstanding patron. But, you know what I mean! You will pull out of that parking lot saying “TSC is the place for me.”

Much like TSC, The Home Depot and Lowe’s Home Improvement stores offer endless browsing opportunities, but on a roomier scale. Just let your kids run down those aisles on dreary days for an easy, indoor recess.
Most parents are well-aware already of the magical mowing tractors section. Kids admire each colorful one for endless entertainment. So many opinions based upon styles, yes? The red tractor can be far superior to the green one on this trip, and we will never know the true reason.
If you get bored of all the tractor riding, though, don’t discount the rest of the store. The amount of activity kids find in browsing the kitchen displays, gently opening appliance doors, choosing bathroom sinks (trust me), and rubbing their hands over carpet samples is remarkable.
While browsing, always use caution to ensure no damage is done to store items, of course. Touching and holding is absolutely natural and expected in a home improvement store, but use care and common sense!
Sometimes, when the guilt sets in that you’re not buying anything after two hours in the store, you wander over to cleaning supplies and pick up a new bottle of dishwashing detergent. Settle down. You aren’t a complete free-loader. A bronze lawn toad is another unforgettable haste purchase. Rainy days are no match to the eternal fun of these home improvement stores, and you might even spend less than at Target.
Ocean’s Floor
Located near Haywood Mall, Ocean’s Floor is a fascinating aquatic store specializing in natural aquarium assembly and salt-water fish. The small store is dark and beautiful, lit almost completely by aquarium lights. Live plants and ocean rocks are available for purchase in large tubs. The demo aquariums are brimming with greenery and corals native to the fish inside. The little shrimp often conceal themselves so well that just counting shrimp in a tank consumes a few minutes.
The real highlight of visiting Ocean Floor, however, is the staff. The staff are happy to answer your questions and patiently talk with curious children. If you end up convinced that your household isn’t complete without aquatic life, the betta fish set-ups are reasonably priced and come with much more instruction from employees than you find at a pet store. All-in-all, Ocean’s Floor is a wonderful way to spend a drab afternoon and, perhaps, support a small, local business.
Cabela’s is honestly a combination of Tractor Supply and Ocean’s Floor. You will find dozens of areas where you can simply wander and learn about different lifestyles and hobbies. The large aquariums and ample animal displays hold the attention of even the littlest shopper. Besides, are you even a millennial parent if you don’t snap an Instagram photo of your angel spawn at the stone fireplace entrance?
Cabela’s has it all. As long as you’re not squeamish regarding taxidermy or uncomfortable around weapons, Cabela’s is fun for the whole, perusing family. It’s hard to leave there without the urge to plan a family camping trip—that is, until you walk back out into the blazing heat or torrential rain and remember that either of those two weather patterns could actually happen while you are out in your tent. Reality check 101 right there. Consider carefully.
So, the next hideous day that you want to avoid the flu at the Chick-fil-A playground and don’t have the funds for a day at The Children’s Museum, be not afraid. Your free, indoor extravaganza awaits you. Just think outside the box.
Remember when your heart broke on a grade school afternoon drive home-when your kid shares, through tears, that some tragedy happened on the playground at lunch? And by tragedy, I mean someone beat them in tetherball. Or maybe they spilled their pretzels on the floor. Or maybe even something harder-they had a tough day with a friend.
I would do anything to have those cares-the worries that seemed huge, the crocodile tears that were unending, and the quick recovery that (almost) always happened by the next day. But now, those worries are different.

Younger kid worries feel more manageable than adult children worries
I am in no way minimizing the grade school challenges. Those are real and all you know at the time. When your babies are hurt, offended, sad, bullied, or left out, you FEEL all of it wholly. So it’s a worry for sure. I am just reflecting back and noting that those worries feel so much more manageable than the worries that happen with adult children.
Last week, one of my kids called and shared with my husband and I how difficult things have been for him. While I would like to say that we had no idea, we of course did. My husband more than me-he sensed it, saw the tension in his face when we had video calls, and could tell by the conversations we had.
I am the one who always thinks everything is rainbows and unicorns and I assumed that because he told us he was ok, that he was telling the whole truth. Not the case.
It was so hard for me to hear our son was struggling
It was incredibly hard for me to hear how our son had been struggling, mostly alone. He chose this, of course, knowing full well that we were *(are) always available and more than willing to help. He has a close circle, and while he confided some of his struggles to them, he really felt that he needed to sort through it himself-no one could help him but himself. So he did the work. He talked to a professional, he did some reflecting and journaling, he clawed his way out of a depression that had a hold on him and THEN shared it all with us.
I am going to try and explain why I started crying while he told us all this-and why I could still cry while typing. For one, I was sad because I didn’t sense it, or see it, and step in. As parents, we want to protect our kids, and if we can’t, then we for sure want to rush in and save them. I didn’t do either in this case; instead, I ignored what I should have noticed and addressed.
It’s scary to lean into the “what ifs” here because we all know stories like this that have ended badly. I don’t want to linger there.
You are only as happy as your least happy child
But that’s what keeps me up at night, for sure. I felt helpless and like I had somehow failed as a parent. By not noticing and acknowledging the struggle, I left my kid to fend for himself in a way that feels neglectful. I can reason all this away, but this is how I feel.
Because, as we all know, you are only as happy as your saddest child.
It was a rough day for me, and probably not easy for him to dig deep and share with us all that he had been dealing with and working through. But he did, and for that I am incredibly grateful.
He had to trust us enough to know that we would not over-react (I cried, yes, but I also let him know that I respected his choice to tell us when he was ready) and also to keep his personal business private. I think, as parents, sometimes we share too much, especially stuff in our adult kids’ lives that isn’t really ours to share.
We should not overshare from our teens’ lives
You know:
“So, is Susie dating anyone?” “Is Trevor still looking for a new job?” “What ever happened with Sal’s roommate situation?”
Maybe they don’t mind telling us but they definitely don’t need everything broadcast to our friends!
I think the moral of my story is that I LOVE that my kid felt that he could deal with things, felt strongly that he was doing it his way, but then also trusted us enough to share. It’s a whole other level of worry and sad-nothing like the spilled lunch or lost schoolyard game kind of worry and sad. A whole new intense and stressful kind of way to lose sleep. Parenting never ends, it just changes.

All About ‘CoComelon Classroom’
The new series centers on a real-life Ms. Appleberry, the beloved CoComelonpreschool teacher, played by 2021 National Teacher of the Year Juliana Urtubey. According to Moonbug Entertainment, Ms. Appleberry will “invite your little one to sing, laugh, and learn alongside familiar faces and new friends.”
The series will focus on early learning principles, “making it a show that little ones will love, and parents can feel confident about.”
In CoComelon Classroom, Ms. Appleberry will be joined by special guests in real life—and she will speak directly to viewers. In each episode, viewers will participate by learning, playing, and singing about something new.
Each lesson is presented through playful activities and the music that made CoComelon a worldwide phenomenon.
In a news release, Moonbug Entertainment describes what viewers can expect:
Surprises: Each episode will feature a segment called “What’s inside the Melon Learning Box?” In this exciting moment, young viewers can learn through play, encouraging them to tap into their imagination and curiosity.
Special Guests: In some episodes, JJ joins Ms. Appleberry in the classroom to learn, sing, and play in animated form. Celebrity guests like Keke Palmer make special appearances to unveil the surprise inside the Melon Learning Box.

Fans of CoComelon first met Ms. Appleberry back in 2019. It was the first day of school at Melon Patch Academy for the show’s characters. She is now a fan-favorite character from the series and has also been included in CoComelon Lane, as well as the live touring show.
We most recently saw Cece, JJ, and their classmates celebrating Ms. Appleberry in CoComelon Lane’s first-ever 30-minute musical special called CoComelon Lane: The Nursery Rhyme Musical.
In the special, Ms. Appleberry goes out of her way to make Cece feel special on her birthday. Cece then wants to organize a surprise for Ms. Appleberry. Cece, her friends, and the parents then pull off the biggest surprise of all—a musical!
