  • Venous Eagle Syndrome: My “Idiopathic” Intracranial Pressure Has a Reason – Penniless Parenting

    I swear, I never intended for this blog to become a “Let’s talk about rare medical conditions” blog, but life happens. And as this blog reflects my life, and I become diagnosed with more and more things, I end up sharing what I learn, which makes this blog a repository of information about some uncommon and sometimes rare syndromes, ranging from Ehlers-Danlos syndrome to No Burp Syndrome/RCPD to idiopathic intracranial hypertension, in order of when I got my diagnoses. It is what it is, and, fortunately, because of my blog and the information in these posts, people who’ve read them have discovered that they have these things as well, have gone to doctors, and have been diagnosed. So it has been helpful in addition to being informative and an update on my life.

    But anyhow, the reason for this post now is that I appear to be heading for yet another diagnosis. Not for another issue, but for the reason behind many of the issues I’ve been having.

    Back in May, I was hospitalized for a headache that wasn’t going away and was diagnosed with idiopathic intracranial hypertension, meaning that I had extra pressure inside my head for unknown reasons. The cerebrospinal fluid—the fluid that goes around the brain and down the spinal column—is too pressurized, which puts pressure on the brain and causes symptoms like headaches, tinnitus, dizziness, pressure, feeling hot all the time, tiredness, and more. For many people it causes vision issues and can lead to blindness, but fortunately for me my vision issues aren’t connected and aren’t dangerous. They’re just “garden variety” EDS-related issues. It is diagnosed by a spinal tap, which measures the pressure of the cerebrospinal fluid, as well as an MRI, which can show an empty sella—meaning the pituitary gland is pressed flat because of the pressure so that part of the brain looks empty.

    Idiopathic means they don’t know the cause of it, which means the treatment is complicated. They do know that it is more common among people who are heavier, so weight loss is the first thing they recommend to people suffering from it. They also put you on medication to lower the production of cerebrospinal fluid, called Diamox. Some people do well with regular spinal taps to lower the pressure, but I had a bad post–spinal tap reaction, probably a cerebrospinal fluid leak because of my EDS (more common with us), so that isn’t an option for me. I never felt better post spinal tap anyhow—just switched one issue for another. Some people with extreme cases get a shunt to remove cerebrospinal fluid from their brain, but it probably would be bad for me anyhow because of my post–spinal tap reaction, and I don’t have a bad enough case for that.

    I’ve since lost a good 12 kilos, or about 25 lbs., on a gradual weight loss journey, but there hasn’t been the slightest change in my symptoms. I’ve still had a constant headache that hasn’t let up since May, though it does change in severity, going between a two and a six or seven, but mostly staying around a three on the pain scale. I feel like my head is a balloon that is blown up a bit too much. The Diamox that I was on didn’t make any difference to my symptoms.

    I went to a pain clinic that focuses on headaches, and they tried doing something called a sphenopalatine ganglion block, where they put lidocaine high up your nose to a cluster of nerves to numb it, which is supposed to stop headaches and works for many people, but it did nothing for me whatsoever.

    At a loss of what to do, especially since the medicine for IIH is a diuretic, but the treatment for POTS (a common side effect of EDS), which I also have, is drinking extra fluids because you need to keep your body well hydrated, I decided to go to a neurologist who is an expert in issues that affect people with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. He was a three-hour drive away from me, and I needed to pay privately to see him, but I hoped he’d be able to help me figure out how to handle this IIH issue and everything that is coming along with it.

    And oh boy.

    That appointment was three hours and worth every cent. I think we finally got down to the bottom of what my issue is—what has caused so many different, seemingly unrelated issues.

    It appears that my intracranial hypertension is not idiopathic, meaning there is a known reason for it.

    The doctor suspected I have something called Venous Eagle Syndrome. Eagle Syndrome is a rare syndrome (about 0.16% of the population has it) where a needle-like bone near the ear called the styloid process is too long, or the stylohyoid ligament is calcified and rigid and presses on something, often the throat, causing issues with swallowing or speaking. But a subtype of Eagle Syndrome has it pressing either on the carotid artery or, suspected in my case, on my internal jugular vein. This is also called styloidogenic jugular venous compression syndrome, which, in medical speak, literally means the jugular vein is compressed by the styloid.

    In order to test for Venous Eagle Syndrome, the doctor sent me for a CT of my head and neck with contrast, and the results were pretty conclusive: I have an elongated styloid process—mine is 33 millimeters (25–30 mm is normal)—and it is pressing on my jugular vein on both sides. I have pulsatile tinnitus, one of the symptoms of Venous Eagle Syndrome, and it stops when I press on my jugular, which is further evidence that this is the reason for my symptoms. I am now waiting for an appointment with the one doctor in my country who works with Venous Eagle Syndrome and have connected with a WhatsApp group of about 25 people in my country with Eagle Syndrome to discuss what my next steps should be.

    But this answers so many of my questions and provides reasons for things that I never would have thought connected.

    The connection between Venous Eagle Syndrome and IIH is that when there is pressure on the jugular vein making it harder for the blood to leave the brain area, there is more blood in the brain, which puts more pressure on the cerebrospinal fluid and gives you all the symptoms of IIH. That makes sense. And it would make sense why my head feels like an overfilled balloon, because of the extra blood there.

    After doing this research, I did some more digging. Because of the rarity of Eagle Syndrome, with Venous Eagle even rarer, it’s hard to find much information out there about it and its symptoms, but I was able to find out some of the following.

    Dizziness. When I did my tilt table test for POTS it didn’t show POTS; the blood pressure cuff was too small, so it was incorrect to begin with, but it showed that I definitely had orthostatic intolerance—dizziness and such that worsen when standing. Guess what is connected to venous Eagle syndrome? Orthostatic intolerance. (POTS is as well, but it’s not the only type of orthostatic intolerance.)

    Heat intolerance, which I suffer from tremendously (and is why I have air conditioning running even in the winter in my home), is also caused by the pressure in the brain caused by Venous Eagle Syndrome.

    Tinnitus, especially pulsatile tinnitus, is often one of the diagnostic signs of Venous Eagle Syndrome. Yay. That explains this annoyance.

    Extreme fatigue is a common symptom of this syndrome and one I’ve been suffering from for years, and have written about plenty, especially recently.

    Brain fog and visual disturbances are also common symptoms. I associate this with my dissociation, but I wonder if sometimes it is connected to this. Maybe my blood pressure goes up or my heart rate goes up when I get stressed out, and then the blood pools in my brain, causing me visual and cognitive disturbances when I’m stressed out.

    Ear Pressure. And then there’s the whole “I can’t have my head underwater without it hurting me from the pressure” thing, which I assumed was just connected to my EDS because of my TMJ issues. But if I have extra pressure in my head from the pressure on my jugular, and in addition the pressure is from a bone right near my ear, it would make sense that any extra pressure from water in my ear would exacerbate symptoms. How that fits into Bengay helping prevent that pain, I’m not sure.

    Ear Pain. Another random symptom I’ve never had a reason for and never connected to anything but that really irritates me is that my ears, externally, are super sensitive. I can’t wear regular earphones or headphones—neither earbuds that go inside the ear nor earphones that go over the ear. Anything that presses on the cartilage of my ear hurts me. (The only place that doesn’t hurt is the lobes, so I can wear regular earrings, fortunately.) It’s possible that with everything that’s going on in my head, and especially around my ears, the nerves around my ears are extra reactive.

    Anyhow, I have to see what the specialist says when I finally get to see him to confirm that it is, in fact, Venous Eagle Syndrome.

    The thing is…

    It is kind of disappointing and also hopeful.

    Disappointing because I switched to a new medication called Topamax, hoping that it would help when the Diamox didn’t. But if the issue isn’t too much cerebrospinal fluid but, in fact, blood pooling, will the medication make any difference? Maybe it will anyhow, but I’m not being hopeful.

    I also lost weight and so far no change. If there’s a structural cause for the intracranial hypertension and it isn’t related to weight, further weight loss won’t fix my issue either.

    But also hopeful because there is a treatment for Venous Eagle Syndrome. It is invasive, but it is surgery to either shave off the end of or completely remove the styloid process, and sometimes to reconstruct the area that was compressed by the styloid process, which I probably wouldn’t need.

    But not hopeful because the doctors in my country are inexperienced with this syndrome, and the people in my country who’ve had this surgery have had to get it done outside the country. Insurance has paid for it, but I’m not sure my insurance would say mine is bad enough that they’d pay for me to get it done.

    Either way, I’m just happy to have some answers, or at least to be pointed in the right direction.

  • To Parents of High School Seniors: Nine Important Reminders

    Over the years, I have received panicked calls and inquiries from friends who are parents of high school seniors. They are preparing to send their child, often their first, off to college, and maybe they call because I have been talking about the impending empty nest for a long time (my first child’s departure for college was over eight years ago).

    Perhaps they know I will be sympathetic and happy to talk about incredibly personal thoughts and emotions that are undoubtedly complex and multi-layered.

    Run up to college begins senior year

    Whether a parent is confused or distressed about the changes in their relationships with their teen, the convoluted college process, or the idea of a child moving out, I have decided that “the run-up” to college is a hard but crucial part of parenting. I define ‘the run-up” as senior year (and some) of high school when your child’s moving away to college or some other pre-career track begins to loom.

    It is an emotional time for the parents of high school seniors — they are saying goodbye to their routine of the past decades, connections to others via that child, and a concrete/clear sense of purpose as a parent. At the same time, most parents understand that a shift in their relationship with their child is required and critical.

    So it is ironic that amid all this stress, emotion (happy and sad), and nostalgia, we must do some of our best and most important parenting.

    Looking back at my three run-ups, much like my friends, I experienced many emotions. I was often highly distracted from my regular life and sometimes weepy. At the same time, akin to the hyper-nesting you do before that baby arrives, I felt an uneasy sense of urgency. Somehow, this helped me focus on the actual responsibility of “emptying.”

    This translated into a more proactive approach to providing my child with gentle support or a kick in the pants, the opportunity to actively take more control of their own lives.

    No matter how much independence you have handed over or forced upon your child at varying stages, the run-up year to high school graduation seems to be a turning point. It’s a time to shift from being in charge to deliberately pushing a child toward leading the way.

    So here are nine themes from my three run-ups:

    1. Pulling myself together

    Yes, I shed some tears on my own, with the constant parade of lasts, but I focused on the exciting new life my child would embark upon. I reminded myself that my children needed a role model while experiencing mixed emotions. I allowed them to talk about their concerns and wishes and sometimes joked about how miserable I would be without them to add some levity to the conversation. I kept it “future-focused,” so they viewed the next phase as exciting and fulfilling.

    2. The responsibility dance

    During senior year, there is a muddling of push and pull between child and parent over who will do what. When I announced that something was now their responsibility, I had to shrug and hope for the best. Sometimes, I had to force-feed the task and require that they complete it.

    3. Social life — “Make good choices”

    Whenever my teens and their friends headed out the door on weekends, I repeated these words in a sing-song voice. I had a few other regular reminder phrases… “You’ve all worked so hard, so don’t blow it,” “You are responsible for being a good friend,” and, their all-time favorite, “Tonight is NOT the night to bust out…everyone is watching!”

    Generally, my husband and I stayed on top of knowing where, when, and who my children were with and remained very strict about expectations, safety, curfew, etc. And yet….that last year, it’s a MUST to lighten up IF your child has earned your trust (no kid is perfect.) Of course, I said many late-night prayers while I reminded myself, how will they make good decisions in college if they never really had a chance to make ANY (good and bad) beforehand?

    4. Managing stress and learning coping strategies

    This is your big opportunity to help them learn how they react to stress and to help them learn techniques to keep things in check. I was fortunate that all three of my children wanted to do well but were motivated for different reasons. All high school seniors, even the most low-key child, feel stressed at some point.

    Two of my children often needed to hear the “there is no deal breaker in life; it’s the long haul that counts” speech. One walked out midway through an SAT after a mix-up. When she called in a crying jag, I said, “Pull over to the side of the road; it’s a stupid test, but driving while hysterical crying is a DEAL breaker.”

    On the other hand, my youngest reacted vehemently to the “keep it in perspective” strategy, telling me, “When you give me the ‘it’s only one test’ speech, I hear you saying that you don’t believe I can do better. I need you to say, ‘Go dig in and get back out there.’ Still, I did share with all my children my long view that getting into the perfect college is no secret formula for a happy and meaningful life.

    5. Good and bad advice

    My wisest friend used to jokingly say: “Everything will be fine if you don’t make eye contact with other parents of high school seniors.”

    You and your child need to find the approach to life after high school graduation that works for you. There is excellent advice out there and also well-meaning, lousy advice. I am eternally grateful for the professional advice from wonderful guidance counselors, teachers, and friends. Still, I learned that my values and my child’s makeup required a different approach to theirs.

    6. Ask questions, use reflective listening, and be cheerfully encouraging

    I facilitated the research and exploration to expand my kids’ perspectives, helped with college visits, and made cups of hot chocolate while they were writing college applications. However, I made sure my children were leading the conversation. I asked many “what do you think?” questions, suggested that they sleep on decisions overnight, and urged them to be realistic and daring with their dreams.

    They had the final say on most choices of what colleges to apply to and, indeed, what they ultimately chose. But I asked probing questions, reminded them of some of their parents’ basic expectations about character and finances, murmured encouragement, and tried to keep my mouth shut even when I disagreed.

    7. Handling mishaps, disappointments

    There is a lifetime of lessons during senior year. How wonderful if your child is rewarded for some of their efforts but is also likely to experience some heartache over a disappointing outcome.

    I embarked with my last child, thinking I had this college thing down. However, I knew she was looking at a specialized professional track I knew nothing about. Despite my experience of sending off two other very different students already, I am now considering selling this last story as a sitcom because of how many little things went wrong.

    We wound up in the ER twice in different states, and for one scheduled interview, the University had the first shutdown in its history. In a heightened way, this provided ample opportunity to model flexibility, maintain good humor, be resourceful, and learn when to give up to regroup.

    But I included her in the problem-solving and decisions about what to do, and we learned together. We have laughed so hard about this now (tears before), but I hope it will be a metaphoric reference point for her to forge ahead in other challenging times.

    8. Teaching your child to applaud or accept success with grace

    Most kids aren’t usually recognized for their best selves in high school. I am grateful that we talked honestly about personal challenges and disappointments at home. As a family, we acknowledged their siblings’ and classmates’ talents and celebrated the success of their peers. My kids learned to be good cheerleaders, and when they were fortunate enough to be acknowledged for an accomplishment, they were modest and grateful for the support they received along the way.

    9. Unexpected understanding

    You think you know your child better than anyone, and you probably do, and you think that the adolescent child before you will evolve into a more grown-up version. However, with each of my children, I learned about their character, aspirations, determination, personal demons, and a few of their souls in that last year. This is by far and away the most significant gift you will be given during the run-up.

    • Impaired kidney and liver function
    • Blood clotting problems
    • Pulmonary edema (fluid accumulation in the lungs)

    • A family history of gestational hypertension or preeclampsia
    • First pregnancy or first pregnancy with a new partner

    Here are some symptoms to watch out for, especially if you have two or more of the risk factors mentioned above:

    • Blood pressure over 140/90
    • Swelling around the eyes, in the face or the hands
    • Sudden weight gain, over 1.5 kg in one week
    • Excess protein in the urine

    • Abdominal pain under the ribs on the right side
    • Breathing difficulties or shortness of breath

    • Hyperreflexia, where the reflexes are abnormally intense

    A preeclampsia diagnosis has to be done by a medical professional, so if you notice any of the symptoms mentioned in this guide to preeclampsia, you should see a doctor right away. After taking your history and checking your blood pressure, the doctor is likely to prescribe any combination of the following tests:

    • Blood tests called ‘preeclampsia panel’, or ‘HELLP workup’ to check the platelets, creatinine, uric acid and liver enzymes
    • Urine dipstick tests to measure proteins in the urine
    • If the test above is positive, another urine test to see if you’re passing over 300 mg protein per day
    • Ultrasounds or nonstress tests (NST) to check fetal growth
    • Some additional tests, like:
      • sFLT-1 (soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase 1) and PLGF (placental growth factor
      • PAPP-A (Pregnancy Associated Plasma Protein A)
      • AFP (alpha-fetoprotein)
      • RNA (ribonucleic acid)

    After the baby is born, you may be prescribed more tests to see if any underlying conditions caused the preeclampsia, like kidney disease, blood clotting disorders or autoimmune conditions like lupus.

    Treatment for Preeclampsia

    Here’s the part of this guide to preeclampsia that’s actually confusing – preeclampsia has no cure, besides actually delivering the baby. How and when you give birth will depend upon your specific condition, and the doctor will make a decision based on the severity of your condition and how the baby is doing.

    Even if you haven’t yet been diagnosed with preeclampsia but are at higher risk, you may be prescribed a low dose of aspirin to keep your blood pressure under control. If your calcium level is low, you may also be prescribed a calcium supplement.

    If you have been diagnosed and your pregnancy is less than 37 weeks, you may be asked to watch and be careful since your baby is not ready to be delivered safely. Your doctor may recommend the following

    • Bed rest, lying mostly on the left side
    • Frequent ultrasounds and fetal heart rate monitoring
    • Medicines to lower blood pressure
    • Blood and urine tests to make sure the preeclampsia isn’t worsening

    In some cases, the doctor may recommend hospitalization for observation and better care, particularly if your preeclampsia is more severe. At the hospital, you may get the following treatment:

    • Frequent monitoring of the mother and baby
    • Medicines to control blood pressure and prevent seizures
    • Steroid injections for pregnancies under 34 weeks
    • Magnesium injections to prevent seizures

    Once you are past the 37-week mark, it is safe to deliver your baby. Your doctor may induce labor or do a cesarean section, depending on the circumstances. However, if the situation gets dangerous, the doctor may need to deliver the baby immediately, especially if they observe signs of severe distress, like these:

    • Your baby is not getting enough blood and oxygen
    • Your diastolic blood pressure is consistently above 110 mm Hg over a 24-hour period
    • Abnormal liver function test results
    • Severe abdominal pain
    • Seizures or changes in brain function
    • Fluid buildup in the lungs
    • HELLP syndrome
    • Low platelet count or bleeding
    • Signs of kidney failure in the mother

    After delivery, most symptoms of preeclampsia go away within 6 weeks, but sometimes they may last longer.

    Prevention of Preeclampsia

    • Stay active and find safe ways to move your body every day

    The Trump administration continued its attack on autism last week, this time by linking Tylenol (acetaminophen) use in pregnancy to autism and strongly discouraging its use. (“Fight like hell not to take it” and “tough it out,” Trump told expectant moms.)

    White House Press Secretary Karolina Levitt said, “The Trump administration does not believe popping more pills is always the answer for better health.”

    Hold on: I am healthy. So are my autistic friends — and if they aren’t, their health problems aren’t ASD.

    Trump isn’t offering a cure for autism. Instead, he and RFK, Jr., are contributing to the burden of stigma that autistic people deal with every day. Autism is not a disease or a mental health condition. It’s both a disability and a kind of neurodivergence.

    “Curing Autism” Is Ableist

    First off, blaming autism on pregnant people taking Tylenol isn’t just wrong — it’s potentially dangerous. Since ibuprofen and aspirin are known to harm developing fetuses, acetaminophen remains the only painkiller available and safe for pregnant people, as backed by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, the Autism Science Foundation, and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

    During each of my three pregnancies, round ligament pain left me nearly unable to walk. If I had not been allowed to take Tylenol, I would have been bedridden, which can cause deep vein thrombosis, a loss of bone mass, and injury to the heart and lungs.

    It’s true that many parents and children would benefit from a better understanding of autism, as well as improved therapies that emphasize accommodation and communication strategies.

    Manifestations of autism, to be sure, can cause difficulty and frustration. Challenges with social communication and interaction, as well as “restrictive and repetitive behaviors,” can lead to friction. And autism is a spectrum condition — some people can “mask” their autism and pass for neurotypical. Others may have difficulty communicating their basic needs. For some parents, the difficulties inherent in caring for so-called “low-functioning” autistic children can be enormous. (Though it’s important to recognize that terms such as “low-functioning” are also inherently ableist; autistic people all function differently.)

    Those parents need both support and improved interventions. But their children’s brain differences don’t need to be “cured.” We don’t want a “cure.” We want accommodation and understanding.

    Claiming that autistic people need to be cured to fit into everyday society implies that neurodivergent people are a burden. “These are kids who… will never pay taxes,” RFK, Jr. said. “They’ll never hold a job, they’ll never play baseball, they’ll never write a poem, they’ll never go out on a date. Many of them will never use a toilet unassisted… and we need to put an end to it.”

    As a published poet, I can only assure you that autistic people do indeed write poetry. Beyond that, this language and framing of autism are terrifying — echoing rhetoric that has fueled some of the darkest moments in human history. (That people are linking this administration’s language and policies to eugenics is not an overblown reaction.)

    We Don’t Want a Cure for Autism

    The vast majority of autistic people don’t want a cure. The idea of curing us pathologizes the way we think, feel, and interact with the world. Instead of a cure, we need help and accommodations from a society structured to favor neurotypical people.

    “This administration seems to care a lot about autism as a supposed epidemic,” said Colin Killick, the executive director of the Autistic Self Advocacy Network. “It does not seem to care much at all about autistic people.”

    If this government cared, it would enact comprehensive disability legislation (currently being gutted), fund special education for autistic children (also on the chopping block), and provide adequate workplace accommodations and protections for autistic adults (harder to do with the DEI rollback). Instead, our existence is being called “a family tragedy.”

    This rhetoric belies the administration’s claims to care about autistic people. Instead, it tells us that priorities lay with eradicating and demonizing people it misidentifies as a societal burden. But we’re far from a burden. Autistic people have the same rights as any other American: the right to joy, the right to self-determination, and the right to make medical decisions without government interference.

    We don’t want a cure. We want our value to be acknowledged.

  • Want to Increase Your Attention Span? Try Reading

    Do you feel like your attention span is that of a rock? Is TikTok rotting your brain to the point where you hyperventilate if you forget to bring your phone with you to the bathroom? (Shout out to those who had to read the backs of shampoo bottles to pass the time when they were kids!) Here’s a novel (the pun should hit you any second) idea to repair it: the mystical art of… reading.

    For people with ADHD, the benefits of reading are many:

    1. Reading lets you train your brain to focus on something less stimulating than, say, television, social media, or video games.
    2. It can support executive functions like working memory.
    3. It lets you escape reality for a bit.
    4. Finishing a book does wonders for your self-esteem.

    But, as someone with ADHD, I know how absurd it sounds to say, “Just sit down and read!”

    Reading isn’t so simple if you’re fighting against the weight of inattention, impulsivity, low boredom tolerance, dyslexia or another learning difference, and have a brain that’s accustomed to the overstimulating content on social media. It can feel like having leg weights on your brain 24/7.

    The good news is, reading really can be for everyone. With the right mindset, you can slowly re-introduce reading into your life and reap all its benefits, one of the biggest being strengthening your attention muscles.

    1. Read what interests you

    In college, I struggled to read because I couldn’t play to my interests. Reading for classes became a chore, so I lost all motivation for it. Unless you’re forced to power through reading assignments, find genres that interest you.

      • What did I like reading/watching as a kid?
      • What books, movies, and TV shows do I enjoy now?
      • What genres (horror, sci-fi, romance, fiction, nonfiction, etc.) do I gravitate to?

    2. Find music that gets you in the zone

    Some people need complete silence to begin reading, but I find that listening to instrumental music helps get me in the zone for focus. YouTube hosts a library of genre-specific playlists that you can have on while reading. I lean toward video game soundtracks, since they are often composed to maximize engagement.

    Here are some of my favorites that promote focus for reading:

    3. Read at an easy-for-you level

    If you’re not much of a reader, or if it’s been a while since you’ve spent time on a book, don’t be ashamed to read books that are “easy” for you or meant for younger readers.

    For example, I read the Percy Jackson series for the first time recently and had a great time with it. I would have loved the books when I was a kid, but, even as an adult, they were great fun to read. I connected with many of its themes, and, as a bonus, Percy also has ADHD that’s presented as more than just the stereotypical hyperactivity. Yay, representation!

    Bonus Book Tip: If anyone gives you a hard time about your reading choice, you have a book you can throw at them.

    4. Audiobooks count as reading

    Some argue that audiobooks don’t count as reading, and they are entitled to their horribly wrong opinions.

    Audiobooks are great for focusing busy minds. When I’m in a cleaning frenzy because people are coming over and the house looks like it was ransacked by a thief, I put a book in my ear and get to work. An engaging story helps kick me into gear for the otherwise mind-numbing work of cleaning.

    Bonus Book Tip: Listening to an audiobook while reading is a great way to double-focus on the text. This can be particularly helpful if you’re assigned to read things outside of your interest.

    5. It’s OK to stop reading

    If a book isn’t clicking with you, move on. Your interest-based brain will tell you when to set down a book; listen to it. If you’re reading the same sentence over and over, or your mind wanders more often than normal, it may be time to try another book.

    To mitigate the financial burden of DNFing (Did Not Finish) a lot of books, which may happen while you are trying to get into reading, I recommend either using the “Download Sample” feature for Kindle Books on Amazon or getting a library card. (Most libraries grant access to e-books and audiobooks on top of print versions.)

    A Final Word

    If your goal with reading is to increase your attention span, great. But I’d encourage you to think about other benefits that come with focusing your attention. I have no doubt that reading has made me a better person and has helped me manage different aspects of my ADHD, most of the time without even realizing it.

  • Greenville, SC’s First Totally Inclusive Playground is Open!

    Greenville SC’s very first totally inclusive playground named after Brooks Foster opens Tuesday, September 29th and we’ve got all the details.

    Greenville, SC finally has their own inclusive playground with the opening of the brand new Brooks’ Playground, 10,640-square-foot playground at Cleveland Park. And it opens Tuesday, September 29th!

    It is absolutely beautiful and a very special place for everyone. We went to the grand opening and got to see Brooks Foster and her lovely family, who put so much of their energy, time, finances, and love into the playground. It’s obvious how much they wanted to give this to the community. 

    “Our family loves being outside and Brooks’ younger sister, Ellie, always wants to play at the playground,” writes Reagin Foster, Brooks’ mother on the City of Greenville’s website. “Unfortunately, it has been difficult to find a playground where the girls can play together and have access to the necessary amenities. This is where the idea for Brooks’ Playground began.

    The new playground is located near Shelter 6 at Cleveland Park near downtown Greenville and is named after Brooks Foster, a little girl with Pontine Tegmental Cap Dysplasia (a rare neurological syndrome). Her family wanted to create a playground where anyone could play, regardless of their special needs.

    The playground includes play elements designed for all kids ages six months to 13+ years. 

    The project was funded by $2.3 million from the City of Greenville and $1.3 million in private donations.

    Elements of Brooks’ Playground

    There are several fantastic elements of Brooks’ Playground that make it especially unique and helpful for families who have kids with special needs. Chris Yang, a Design Consultant with Carolina Parks and Play who worked on Brooks’ Playground, revealed tons of interesting information about why specific aspects of the design were chosen:

    Completely fenced in: parents of kids with special needs (and toddlers in general) need someplace where they are able to know their kids cannot escape without their notice. This was a key feature of the design. 

    Shade: we all know how hot summers are in the South and Brooks’ Playground has multiple sun shades to protect kids and caregivers alike. But there are more reasons why the shade covers 85% of the playground: 1) studies show parents who take their kids to the playground stay longer when there is shade and 2) some kids cannot regulate their body temperatures and the shade is crucial to help them with that. 

    Anti-static flooring: the ground of the playground is anti-static because static interrupts the hearing devices of kids who use them (and they are really expensive to fix). The roller slide at the playground is static-free as well. The floor is also anti-microbial. 

    Swings & Zip Lines: there are two zip lines at the playground plus a large swing that a child could lay down on and swing. 

    Merry-go-round: the merry-go-round is perfect for kids who want to sit, run around, or use a wheelchair. 

    Ramps: ramps at the playground go all the way to the top of the play structures. There is also a ramp through a really cool tunnel with stars. It’s cute!

    Calming colors: the colors were chosen by the Foster family and are specifically calming colors of blues and greens. It’s beautiful. 

    Tactile aspects: the playground was designed with lots of different aspects to appeal to a wide variety of kids – a water mister, touch and feel, things that make sound, etc.

    “We designed the playground so that kids of all ages and abilities and play together without technology,” said Yang. 

    I watched this design in action and saw kids who didn’t know each other playing together and having fun. It was honestly the sweetest thing to see. 

    Accessible Walkways and Bathrooms

    The playground includes several accessible, paved paths but one of the coolest things is the three new bathrooms. There is a ramp up to them and they are huge. 

    Inside each one is a big, adult-size changing table. The Fosters knew that parents would not always have the opportunity to go home to take care of the needs of their kids and wanted to give them the space to do that outside of the home without having to leave the playground.

    You can visit the playground near Shelter 6 at Cleveland Park, which is located at Cleveland Park Dr & East Washington in Greenville. If you’re coming from 385, when you turn into Cleveland Park, you need to go past the playground in front of the zoo and stay to the left. There is parking next to the playground.

  • Disabled patients stuck in Ontario’s psychiatric hospitals

    Adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD) make up more than one in five patients who have been living in an Ontario psychiatric hospital for over a year, says a study published this week in the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry. 

    Of the 1,466 patients stuck in mental health beds for more than 365 days on Sept. 30, 2023, 22 per cent had IDD, according to the study led by ICES and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health.

    Only five per cent of these patients were in units with staff trained to work with people with IDD. This matters because the study found patients with IDD were more likely than those without to have psychotic disorder, to have moderate to severe cognitive impairment, to be unable to care for themselves, and to lack the social supports needed to leave hospital. They were also more likely to be physically held down or “secluded”—a euphemism for being trapped in a hospital room. Almost 40 per cent had autism.

    In addition to creating specialized mental health care in hospitals and the community for this population, one of the study recommendations is better housing.

    As the parent of an adult son with IDD, I know firsthand that the housing situation in Ontario is grim.

    My son has been on the Developmental Services Ontario waiting list for supported housing for almost 13 years. This is not a transparent waiting list that moves based on when a person is added to it.

    Staff at DSO have told me that less than a handful of housing spots open up each year, and they go to adults who are homeless or living in shelters. I have been told that my son will not be offered a spot unless we die and he is homeless. That’s the accepted standard of care in Ontario.

    On its website, DSO says: “People are linked to supportive housing options when resources become available.” The kicker is that they don’t become available. The province was housing five per cent less people in the 2023-24 year than they did in 2018-19, according to the Financial Accountability Office of Ontario. Its stats are included in Ending the Wait, by Community Living Ontario

    In the 2023 year, 17,856 Ontarians with developmental disabilities were receiving housing support, which could mean living in a group home or intensive support residence, with a host family, or on their own with support worker services. But, over 28,000 people were waiting for a housing placement. When will resources become available for an additional 28,000 people? And how?

    A staff member at the Lights program at Community Living Toronto told me that there are about 2,000 filled developmental housing spots in Toronto, but 5,000 people on a waitlist. So even if the 2,000 people who are being housed died, the system couldn’t meet the needs of those waiting.

    Isn’t that as stark as it gets? 

    I think about all the families who put their loved one on the DSO wait list, and actually expect it to work like a wait list. The ones who haven’t learned the reality yet.

    In addition, if you are looking for a group home for your adult child, there is no choice in the kind of home your child goes to. 

    When our son was first put on the DSO housing list, families could choose a “lead agency” they wanted to work with. This meant if you liked the philosophy, for example, of L’Arche homes, your child would eventually be offered a spot there.

    That choice doesn’t exist today. 

    Of course if your child isn’t eligible for housing because they aren’t homeless, I guess choice is a moot point.

    Back to the new study. 

    Because appropriate mental health, housing and other community supports in Ontario are so lacking for people with IDD, they’re overrepresented in psychiatric hospitals that don’t meet their needs.

    As the researchers in the study note: “…While bright fluorescent lights, disruptive code announcements, pungent cleaning products and loud roommates can be unpleasant for any patient, for patients with sensory sensitivities and reliance on specific routines, these common features…can be intolerable. Sensory distress can impair communication ability and lead to distressed behaviours which may be met with medications, restraints and seclusion, which in turn lead to further decompensation and increased difficulty transitioning out of hospital.”

    In other words, psychiatric hospitals are toxic for people with autism and other developmental disabilities.

  • “When Your Child’s Chronological and Developmental Ages Are Out of Sync”

    A 17-year-old who excels in school but waits until the night before college applications are due to ask for recommendations.

    A 14-year-old team captain who fights with his younger sibling as if he were 6 himself.

    A 12-year-old with plenty of friends who forgets basic hygiene like brushing teeth or showering.

    These are just a few ways that the gap between chronological age and developmental age shows up in youth with ADHD – a mismatch that leaves many parents bewildered.

    ADHD, like autism or a learning disability, is a neurodevelopmental disorder. In plain terms, it means that your child may not always “act their age.” It’s why your child keeps pace with peers or even excels in some areas but falls well behind in others. The gap feels especially troubling as demands (and their consequences) balloon over time. Your child may be chronologically ready to get their driver’s license or go away to college, for instance, but they may not be developmentally ready.

    You’re not the only one who sees the mismatch. Your child likely sees and feels it, too. For many children and teens with ADHD, the gap between their abilities and their peers’ often drives self-esteem challenges. It can deflate motivation, cause them to withdraw, and prompt them give up trying for fear of doing it wrong. Helping your child understand this temporary delay while building hope for their future can make a tremendous difference.

    As your child continues to mature, use these tips to meet them where they are, support their independence, and help them reach their full potential.

    1. Identify Your “Shoulds”

    • Stop yourself when do you find yourself thinking, “My child should be able to do ___.”
    • Ask: What are some expectations that you, your child’s school, or coach are maintaining, and your teen is not consistently meeting?
    • Consider: If you subtracted a few years from your child’s age, would their behavior or skill level appear more appropriate?

    “Shoulds” are cognitive thinking traps that fuel frustration and burnout and may even break family ties. Remember that studies suggest youth with developmental differences may function one to three years behind their peers in emotional regulation, impulse control, social awareness, and other areas. While your child may strive to be on the same page as others, the reality is different. It’s more productive to focus on adjusting expectations and building skills.

    So if you find yourself thinking: He should know better than to miss assignments. He should always turn them in on time in middle school.

    Try to think: It makes sense that this is hard for him. Although he is 13, his brain is working more like a 9- or 10-year-old on this skill. I’ll keep this in mind and work with him to figure out how I or school can help.

    2. Create a Pathway for Success

    Adjusting expectations doesn’t mean lowering them. You are meeting your child at their current maximum capacity and still nudging them forward. With that in mind, what would your child need to learn or do to develop lagging skills? What’s your role in supporting them, and who can help you?

    Be reasonable with yourself and what you can be expected to do as a parent vs. what would be the role of a teacher or support person.  If turning in assignments on time is an issue, can you scaffold with visual reminders, checklists, routines, and other supports? Can a teacher provide reminders or assist with a daily planner?  Loop your child into these conversations so they feel part of their growth.

    If your child is working toward an activity they’re not developmentally ready for, like driving, provide clear guidelines and timelines for what you need to see from them to reach this goal. Remind your teen that it’s not that they’re forbidden from the activity; they just can’t do it “yet” — a tremendous difference for teens with ADHD and self-esteem challenges.

    3. Where Does Your Child Shine?

  • You Can Golf With the Family at 3’s Greenville Golf & Grubhouse

    If you are looking for a place to have some fun, get some phys-ed time for your home-based learners, or just a place to squeeze in a date night, we’ve found a place for you. 3’s Greenville Golf and Grubhouse is conveniently located just south of Downtown Greenville, and we went to check out this family-friendly golf course. 

    It’s been a long time, but having spent most of my adolescent years just a mile from a golf course in Florida provided me with ample opportunity for time on a fairway. This was my first time on a golf course since moving to Greenville, and my son’s first time on a real course, so I was excited at the opportunity to share a new experience with him. Visitors to 3’s have two different options: you can choose the 12-hole, the par 3 course, or the 17,000 square foot “Humps & Bumps” putting course. Let’s talk about the difference.

    The 12 Hole Course at 3’s Greenville Golf and Grubhouse

    One of the things that makes this course family-friendly is that each of the 12 holes is a par 3. For those of you who are new to golf, the “par” is the number of swings it takes you to get that little golf ball into the almost-as-small hole. On a typical course, it could be a par 4 or 5 with 18 holes, which makes the game last a lot longer.

    A Helpfully Designed Course

    The way the course at 3’s has been designed allows players never to be too far from the clubhouse. The course being a par 3 also makes it seem less intimidating for people who are new to golf, or are rusty, like I was. It had been almost 20 years since I had played more than putt-putt, and I still managed to make par on one of the holes. That was more than I expected I would be able to after all this time. 

    If you are new to golf or need a few pointers, 3’s offers instruction programs. There are clinics for women and children as well as open clinics.

    And David Lee and Gravity Golf have been endorsed by quite a few impressive golfing legends. There are half-day workshops, 3-day classes, and even golf and yoga retreats.

    The Huge Sand Trap

    Towards the 12th and final hole, you’ll see a behemoth of a sand trap. The kind of hazard that would give Tiger Woods nightmares. They would be justified too, as this is (I’m told) the deepest sand trap in all of South Carolina!

    Humps & Bumps “Himalayas” Putting Course

    Think of this as mini-golf, minus the silly themes and fake grass. The natural obstacles on this mini-course are made up of, you guessed it, humps and bumps! It’s easy enough for a child to play and enjoy, and still challenging enough for an adult.

    While we were there, a family was enjoying the putting course, with a group of (what appeared to be) seasoned golfers playing behind them. That’s the kind of thing I believe would make 3’s owner, Davis Sezna, very happy. He wants 3’s to be a place where everyone can come enjoy golf, and that’s what I witnessed while there.

    One of the other things I noticed was that the way the putting course is designed, it wraps around the clubhouse. If you had tween or teenage kids who wanted to enjoy the putting course, you could sit back in the shade of an umbrella and relax while they played. If one were so inclined, one might also enjoy a frosty signature cocktail from the clubhouse.

    Date Night at 3’s

    This could also be the perfect spot for a date night or a double date. While the guys play, the ladies can sit on the patio and enjoy a drink. Might I suggest the “3’s Transfusion,” a Welch’s grape juice cocktail made with Tito’s vodka. This was my favorite, garnished with frozen grapes it was the perfect drink to cool you off after a warm day on the course. 

    The Grubhouse

    The Grubhouse at 3’s is a laid-back spot with firepits, Adirondack chairs, and a menu full of favorites for all ages. Adults can dig into smash burgers, flatbread pizza, nachos, or a loaded Nathan’s hot dog, while kids will love classics like cheeseburgers, grilled cheese, chicken tenders, and hot dogs. Whether it’s after a round of golf or a fun family night out, The Grubhouse serves up comfort food with a cool, welcoming vibe. Just know that tee times and grubhouse hours vary, so be sure to check ahead if you plan to eat and play.

    Where can you splatter paint on a canvas, throw glow-in-the-dark paint against a wall, custom paint your own shoes, or even decorate a cake? At the brand new Color Me Greenville in Greenville, SC! We tried it out and have all the fun details.

    Color Me Greenville is a brand new business located minutes from downtown Greenville, SC and is the city’s only dedicated splatter paint place – regular paint and glow-in-the-dark paint. My daughters (ages 11 and 14) absolutely loved our time there. The owners are so lovely and the entire concept is fun and whimsical and something you will for sure want to do again.

    About Color Me Greenville

    When Susan McMakin and her husband tried splatter painting in South Korea years ago, they thought it was awesome and in the back of their mind, considered it may be a cool idea for Greenville. They then tried similar spots in Charlotte and Atlanta and decided to start up a dedicated place where people could come and throw paint on a canvas for fun in Greenville. But since Susan is a baker and cake decorator – she owns Couture Cakes, who I’m sure you’ve heard of – she wanted to also add in cake and cupcake decorating as an option so Color Me Greenville was born. 

    The shop is run by Susan and her daughter, Eleanor, a senior at the University of South Carolina and a creative entrepreneur. Between the two of them, they’ve managed to put together quite an awesome venue off of N. Pleasantburg Drive in Greenville that is completely worth the trip.

    The place is fantastic for a group party, birthday, date night, or just a fun family outing. 

    Splatter Painting

    If you’ve never done splatter painting or have any idea what I’m talking about or cannot even draw a stick figure, don’t worry, you’ll do just fine at Color Me Greenville. It’s more about the experience than the finished art (even though the canvases of my daughters turned out absolutely amazing) and the experience is certainly worthy of a wow factor. 

    Splatter painting is just like it sounds: you literally throw paint at the canvas. You can also shoot it out of a water gun. Or you can use a paintbrush if you like. Or you can use a squishy ball and slingshot. Whatever you choose, I promise you’ll have an absolute blast doing it.

    We did both the regular splatter painting and the glow-in-the-dark splatter painting, which I’ll get to in a minute. For the regular splatter painting, we wore ponchos and booties for our shoes, gloves, and protective eyewear, which I promptly forgot to put on my eyes and which remained on my head. Whoops. 

    How it works is that you have a canvas on the wall and a variety of paint toys and paint colors. Susan showed us some options for using the slingshot and water guns, and then we started throwing paint. If you’ve never done this, it feels freeing! There are no rules in splatter painting. You can throw paint right from the cup or bottle or use your hands to paint the canvas or use the water fun. It doesn’t matter. We live in a world of rules, and to have none is a lot of fun. 

    The splatter painting sessions are about 35 minutes, but you will want to stay longer. At least we did. But I think the time limit is actually good because if not, you’ll just throw so many colors at your canvas because it’s so much fun, and it will be all brown. If you like brown, that’s cool, though. 

    Glow-in-the-Dark Splatter Painting

    This is where it gets real at Color Me Greenville. The splatter painting is done under black lights, and all the paint lights up! It was so fun to do this and such a unique experience. My daughters figured out they could put paint on their hands and smash them up against each other’s full-body suits. It was hilarious.

    Susan told me these sessions are their best-selling ones, and wow, I can absolutely see why. You can do this nowhere else in Greenville. The studio has darkening shades, which pull down, so they can hold these sessions anytime, day or night. The setup is the same, but I think the paint is different. You can book these sessions along with the classic splatter painting or even cake decorating.

    Sneaker Painting & Cake Decorating 

    If you’ve ever wanted to paint your own sneakers, this is the spot to go. They have a ton of items to give your shoes a glow-up like charms, glow-in-the-dark laces, and of course, endless paint colors. Sneaker painting sessions start at $45. 

    Then there’s cake and cupcake decorating, which is really such a fun night out for date night or with friends or your kids. You’ll be decorating a Couture Cake or cupcake just for you. They also offer lots of different classes, many of which are seasonal or themed. Be sure to check the website for updated information and to get a spot.

    Birthday Parties & Group Events

    One of the first things I thought of when we started our splatter painting session was how cool it would be to have a birthday party here. It would be so fun for everyone! You can book Color Me Greenville for this very purpose for an hour and can add time in 30-minute increments for a minimum group of six people (even if you want to book it and have less than six people, you will be charged for six people due to having the space all to yourselves).

    You can book the splatter paint sessions or cake/cupcake decorating for parties. They allow you to bring in your own food as well. 

    If you are looking for something specific, just give them a call. They are the nicest people and are open to how to make your time there even better.

    Every so often I jot down my recent frugal wins. It’s a good reset on the days I feel like I’m dropping the ball, because the truth is I’m doing a lot right; it just blends into my routine so I stop noticing. Writing them out helps me see the good, and hopefully gives you a few ideas to try too.

    Frugal Accomplishments

    Frugal in the Kitchen

    I used leftover sweet potato and leftover rice to make a tomato rice soup.

    I used leftover rice and leftover chopped onions in stuffed artichoke.

    I used leftover chicken and chicken drippings as the base for chicken veggie soup.

    I used chicken drippings along with some herbs that accidentally froze in my refrigerator to make an herbed rice dish.

    I cooked up some squash that accidentally froze in the refrigerator.

    Frugal Shopping

    I stocked up on chicken wings when I saw them on sale for 37 cents a pound.

    I bought a good quality drill when the local supermarket was selling one at a discounted price.

    I bought special medicated mouthwash for a fraction of what it costs locally, on iherb.

    Free Things

    A book series (Red Rising) that my son had asked me to buy him appeared as a set on my free library outside my front door and I was able to claim it entirely for free.

    DIY

    I took in the waist of my daughter’s pants so it fits her nicely and in a way that looks professional, without needing to pay seamstress pricing.

    I fixed broken ladder rungs going up to my son’s loft bedroom.

    I topped off the oil in my car.

    Other

    I sold my old car for cash, instead of just selling it for parts.

    And lastly, I am planning a really frugal trip abroad that I’ll hopefully be sharing about shortly.

     

    I would say that that’s not a bad amount of frugal things I did recently.
