  • American College of Education Provides a New Model for Graduate Degrees: Affordable Tuition, High ROI and No Federal Student Loans

    American College of Education was founded in 2005 with an initial class of 25 Chicago schoolteachers and a vision that seemed unrealistic, if not impossible: Providing high-quality, flexible and affordable master’s degrees without relying on federal student loans.

    Now, as ACE approaches its 20-year anniversary, that implausible goal has proved to be a winning strategy. That initial class of 25 has grown to 11,000 current students, and 44,000 graduates. More than 86% of students pay as they go and graduate with no debt. ACE still does not accept federal Title IV loans, and ACE has not increased tuition since 2016.

    “We say, ‘Founded by teachers, for teachers,’ because the original idea was how to create an affordable master’s degree for teachers, so they would not have to go into debt. That founding vision, and our dedication to quality, affordability and accessibility, has shaped the trajectory of the institution,” said Geordie Hyland, ACE’s president and CEO.

    ACE chose from the outset to forego Title IV loans, even though it is fully accredited and is qualified to accept them, in order to reduce its operational expenses and the associated costs to students. And in 2016, ACE was certified as a B Corporation, committed to having a positive social impact through its business activities.

    Today, ACE offers certificate, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in education, nursing, healthcare and business, with programs accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). And the programs remain affordable: ACE’s master’s degrees cost less than $10,000 and doctorates cost less than $24,000.

    “We base every decision on how it affects the value proposition for students,” Hyland said. “Our appeal is that we’re high-quality, we’re affordable and we’re flexible. You can keep your job as a teacher, a nurse, or a business or healthcare professional as you study with us. You can pay for your degree month by month, and you can receive a huge value proposition when you attain your degree.”

    According to a recent independent study by economists at the labor market analysis firm Lightcast, for every $1 graduates invest at ACE, they receive $19.20 in future career earnings. ACE graduates also report an average salary increase of over $21,000 upon completion of their program.

    ACE’s low-debt, high-return model runs counter to the dismal findings of a recent Georgetown University study, which reported that the soaring costs of graduate degrees are eroding the earnings boost they provide. From 2000 to 2020, net tuition tripled while debt grew more than 50%, the study found. On average, master’s students graduated with about $65,000 in debt, while doctoral students graduated with $90,000 in debt, according to federal Education Department data.

    “Avoiding high debt and having practical, relevant, quality online coursework and instruction is crucial for the typical ACE student, who is in their mid-30s with a family and a full-time job,” Hyland said.

    “Many teachers and nurses do not pursue a degree that requires them to take time off work or even to drive hours to a physical classroom after work hours,” he said. “And there’s a massive difference in the value of your salary adjustment if you take on $60,000 of debt versus coming out with no debt. That salary adjustment is life-changing – it impacts your income every year and it also flows through to your pension.”

    ACE also helps early- and mid-career learners with its commitment to giving academic credit for prior learning and professional development. The college carefully assesses students’ work experience and applies industry best practices and accepted models to properly provide credit, which can reduce time-to-completion and tuition costs for students.

    Prior learning credit is one example of ACE’s belief in working with employers, and how providing value to students also benefits their employers and their field. As school districts and hospital systems struggle to recruit and retain talented employees, ACE can customize education and healthcare solutions to employers’ needs to help strengthen their human capital. These solutions serve to help employers recruit, retain and upskill their employees by creating accessible career pathways that advance employees to positions with more responsibility and higher pay.

    Hyland cited the example of working with a school district. “ACE can take a paraprofessional all the way to superintendent,” he said. “If you can convey these career pathways to your current and prospective teachers, and cover the costs of their professional development and degrees, you can really help bring people into your organization and keep them, and it’s cost-effective to help them get ahead.”

    That’s particularly important in vital professions like teaching and nursing, where salary progression can be critical to ensuring that they are desirable occupations. “One of the challenges with these careers is the salary expectations,” Hyland said. “Working with ACE, you can create a career pathway where you can show employees that over time, they can have an impactful, engaging career and also increase their earnings and expand their opportunities.”

    For the sixth year in a row, Unity Environmental University Distance Education announced it will not raise tuition, and is committing to another six years of flat tuition through 2030, reflecting the institution’s dedication to keeping education affordable to all students.

They simply could not put their lives on hold to move across the country, be required to live in residence halls, and enjoy all the trappings of a traditional college experience.     Unity has grown to more than 9,100 students, and those learners are more diverse than ever. As Unity reaches a wider audience, the university’s average self-disclosed diverse student population is up from a 50-year average of 8% to nearly 25%.     New Academic Programs

The university also launched a programs in Environmental Engineering and Environmental Process Engineering.

    At the graduate level, Unity added a Master of Professional Science (MPS) program in Climate Change Adaptation and Resilience and exciting new Sustainable Master of Business Administration (SMBA) programs in Parks and Outdoor Recreation and Tourism and Hospitality. The university is also offering Master of Science (MS) degrees for the first time in a variety of fields, including Environmental Data Analytics, One Health, and Carbon Ecology and Management.

    Manchester-Essex Regional School Students Gain 17 Points and Reading Public Schools Improves by 3 Points to Rank in the Top 10% of 279 School Districts

    Fifth-grade students from Manchester-Essex Regional School District gained 17 points on the Massachusetts Common Assessment Program for Science (MCAS) and Reading Public Schools students gained 3 points on the state-wide science test in 2024, scoring in the top 10% of the 279 school districts in the state. Both of the public school districts, tied in the rankings at 18th, partner with KnowAtom, a nationwide provider of Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)-based hands-on curricula.

    The Manchester-Essex Regional School District and the Reading Public School District both use KnowAtom’s hands-on science curriculum, which is designed for mastery of Massachusetts Science and Technology Engineering Frameworks. Each district scored 22 points ahead of the state-wide average for science proficiency this year. In 2024, Consumer Affairs ranked Massachusetts the best in the country for public education, noting that “the state has the best fourth-grade reading and eighth-grade math scores in the country on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) tests,” (Consumer Affairs, 2024). This year, the number one and number four ranking districts in the state for science performance, among districts with 30 or more students tested, use KnowAtom curriculum as their core science curriculum.

  • 8th ‘Gratitude: Nanking Safety Zone’ Int’l Peace Hiking Kicks Off in E.China Nanjing City

    The 8th Annual “Gratitude: Nanking Safety Zone” International Peace Hiking Ceremony kicked off on November 16 in Nanjing, the capital city of east China’s Jiangsu Province. Over 200 participants from China and abroad gathered in the Suiyuan campus of Nanjing Normal University to commemorate the humanitarian efforts of foreign nationals who sheltered Chinese refugees.

    In November 1937, Minnie Vautrin and more than 20 other foreigners established the International Committee for the Nanking Safety Zone, providing sanctuary for over 250,000 Chinese refugees during the Nanjing Massacre.

    The 8.7-kilometer route of peace hiking passed through significant historical sites, including the Suiyuan Campus of Nanjing Normal University, former residence of John Rabe, Gulou Hospital, and the former location of the International Committee for the Nanking Safety Zone.

    Liu Liu, daughter of Nanjing Massacre survivor Liu Minsheng, told the participants: “My father took refuge at the Ginling College Refugee Shelter. He always remembered international friends like Minnie Vautrin with deep gratitude.”

    Employees from Siemens and BSH Home Appliances gathered at the former residence of John Rabe to place flowers. During the Nanjing Massacre, Rabe’s residence became a refugee shelter, housing more than 600 people at its peak. Zhou Feng, Director of the Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders, and Jin Shifeng, senior vice president of BSH Home Appliances Greater China, jointly watered a stem of zijin grass, a symbol of peace.

    Participants visited the former committee site, examining historical correspondence and reports exchanged between the Safety Zone Committee and Japanese diplomats. At the event’s conclusion, participants penned wishes for peace on postcards and placed them in a “time capsule” at the finish line on the Suiyuan Campus.

    Hexu Yuanjing, a doctoral student from School of Architecture and Urban Planning, Nanjing University, and also a guide along the route, shared that “Through this walk, we deeply feel the humanity and compassion demonstrated by international friends, and we rediscover the unique warmth and charm of Nanjing. This is a truly meaningful experience.”

    The event was organized by the Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders and the National Memory and International Peace Research Institute. Participants include descendants of Nanjing Massacre survivors, representatives of the Red Cross Societies of Jiangsu and Nanjing, Staff from John Rabe and International Safety Zone Memorial Hall, corporate representatives, Zijin Grass volunteer service team members, and students from several universities in Nanjing.

    Fifth-grade students from North Reading Public School District in Massachusetts achieved the best test scores in the state on this year’s Massachusetts Common Assessment Program for Science (MCAS). The school district ranks first in the state, considered one of the best in the nation for public education, for elementary science this year. The North Reading Public School District is partnered with KnowAtom, a Massachusetts company and nationwide provider of K-8 Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)-based curricula.

    Students from J. Turner Hood School scored highest on the MCAS of the district’s three elementary schools, with 91% of students meeting or exceeding state proficiency levels and no students ranking in the lowest category of “not meeting expectations.” In all, 87% of the district’s fifth-grade students met or exceeded proficiency expectations, placing it first in the state among districts with 30 or more students tested. Only 44% of Massachusetts students statewide met or exceeded proficiency levels (MCAS Data, 2024). Points are awarded to the school chosen more frequently and deducted from the less popular choice, creating a dynamic score that reflects true student inclinations.

    Michael Ermann, Olive Book founder and Virginia Tech professor, expressed frustration with the limitations of traditional legacy rankings, which he believes distort real indicators of quality in undergraduate education. “When a major legacy ranking publication eliminated class size as a factor in 2023, it did a disservice to students,” Ermann said. “Class size impacts quality, and faculty have lost a tool to push back on university administrators that, looking at budgets, understandably push consistently for fewer faculty and more students. Olive Book 100 provides a fresh, student-centered alternative that weighs the colleges the way students weigh the colleges.”

    To enhance fairness and transparency:

    • Point-Based Ranking: Schools accumulate or lose points depending on how frequently students choose one over another.

  • Grand Canyon CEO expects a friendlier Education Department under Trump

    Leaders of the for-profit Grand Canyon Education are expecting a more accommodating regulatory environment under President-elect Donald Trump. 

    I believe that we’re going to have a voice in what’s going to happen in this next administration in terms of what the future of higher education should be,” Brian Mueller, the company’s chairman and CEO and president of Grand Canyon University, said on a call with analysts Wednesday.

    The company, which primarily provides marketing and educational services to Grand Canyon University, has had its share of clashes with the U.S. Department of Education under the Biden administration. 

    They include a fight over Grand Canyon University’s for-profit status with the Education Department and a nearly $40 million fine the agency leveled against it over marketing practices in Grand Canyon’s doctoral programs. The company has appealed both determinations.

    At the time of the fine a year ago, Mueller responded with fiery rhetoric, saying in a statement, “We need to fight this tyranny from federal government agencies.”

    The department’s actions against and investigations into Grand Canyon have also paved the way for private legal actions. 

    This summer, the company was hit with a class-action lawsuit alleging that it lied to students about doctoral program costs at Grand Canyon University. The complaint cited Education Department analysis as one piece of evidence backing its allegations. The company labeled the allegations “completely without merit.” 

    Regulations in development by the Biden administration may also impact the university and Grand Canyon Education. Mueller noted as much on the call and cited the new gainful employment rules, which largely apply to the for-profit sector and pressure institutions to ensure positive economic outcomes for graduates. 

    There are a lot of rules being discussed for future implementation in higher education, they are not going to be helpful to students, and they are not going to be helpful to the economy,” Mueller said. 

    He specifically pointed to the new gainful employment rules, describing them as “so counterproductive to what we are doing here.” 

    The Education Department in September delayed the reporting deadline under the rules from Oct. 1 until Jan. 15. As it turns out, that new deadline will now run right into Trump’s Jan. 20 Inauguration Day.

    Despite its run-ins and disagreements with the Education Department during Biden’s term, Grand Canyon Education’s business has been growing. Over the first nine months of its current fiscal year, revenue grew 8.5% year over year to $740.4 million. Net income, meanwhile, jumped by roughly $20 million to $144.4 million.

    Pushing the company’s revenue higher in the third quarter was higher-than-expected enrollment at Grand Canyon University. Its headcount reached 123,002 students as of Sept 30, up 4% from 2023.

    The Education Department’s delayed, glitch-ridden rollout of the new Free Application for Federal Student Aid had a negative impact on the company’s enrollment.

    While Grand Canyon University’s overall enrollment grew, Mueller said both applications and registrations were down for students who completed the FAFSA. Moreover, enrollment at Grand Canyon University’s physical campuses this quarter fell about 2.3% from last year to 24,657 as of Sept. 30, driven by a decline in traditional student enrollment that Mueller tied to the FAFSA problems.

    Although this is a disappointing result, this is equal to or better than what is occurring nationwide,” Mueller said. 

    He added that the company expects enrollment at the physical campus to rebound and noted that initial results were positive from the Education Department’s FAFSA fixes for next year’s enrollment cycle.
