How to stay safe – Online dating

Online dating has skyrocketed in popularity over the last decade, piggybacking off the sea change in public perception of the practice. This has led to more people than ever finding love and a huge increase in visibility for online dating, which can only be a good thing.

However, it’s also meant that the public sensitivity to the negative press has increased with many people perceiving online dating as ‘unsafe’, despite not having taken part in it themselves.

So, is online dating safe, and what steps should you take to ensure your safety? Join us as we take a look.

The History of the Online Dating ‘Safety’ Crisis

We can trace the ‘danger’ narrative around online dating back not only to the earliest days of online dating but to the dawn of the internet itself when fear reigned supreme. After all, how could you really trust anyone, when you couldn’t see or hear them?

The internet had immense promise, but for most people, it was a scary and confusing place, a situation that wasn’t helped by the general lawlessness and high prices of entry. So, when online dating came around, that fear found a new home.

This hunger for scepticism fuelled endless articles and think pieces questioning the motives of those using online dating and the safety of the services, and though tens of millions of lasting relationships have now been formed through these platforms, a lingering perception of online dating as unsafe has lived on.

    So, is online dating unsafe?

The answer, with a few exceptions, is no – at least, not any more dangerous than any other dating form.

The vast majority of people on dating websites are just like you, kind-hearted single people looking for love and companionship. However, there are always some people who wish to take advantage of sincerity and profit from the genuine intentions of others.

That’s no different from traditional dating, but because of the popular – fear-driven – narrative, those people have received a disproportionate amount of coverage.

Today, online dating websites feature comprehensive reporting tools, financial fraud protections and HTTPS support built right into the websites, so you can be confident of your banking information remaining safe.

What tips should I follow to stay safe online?

Staying safe online is easier than it’s ever been before, but there are a few useful tips you should keep in mind if you want to stay perfectly safe. They are:

    • Choose an anonymous username. Staying anonymous on your profile means that if a conversation takes an uncomfortable turn, you can leave it behind without fear of it re-emerging on your other social media platforms.
    • Meet in a public place. If your conversations have reached a point where you’re both excited about meeting in person, it’s always worth doing so in a public place. If you’re really unsure, why not bring a friend along for a pre-date drink where you can settle into the date and get comfortable?
    • Close and report any conversation you feel is manipulating you. As we’ve mentioned, there are always some people who want to ruin a good thing, and scammers do exist (though they’re rare). As such, if you feel like you’re being pressured or tricked into providing your bank details or to send money, close the conversation and report them using the websites reporting tools.

  • 8 Tips for Picking the Perfect First Date

8 Tips for Picking the Perfect First Date

It’s amazing really, but even as seasoned experts of the dating scene, the first date can bring on a remarkable range of emotions. I guess it goes to show that just because we’re over 50 and still dating, it doesn’t mean that we’ve got all of the answers. One of the most common questions we’re asked at maturity dating is how to pick a first date location. Here are eight tips:

    1. Try to pick an activity that you both enjoy. This sets the tone, if you choose something only you like, imagine how your date may feel, struggling to stay polite, bored and disappointed?  This is a strategy that also sets the stage for something you can afford.
    2. Picking something you can afford and accommodate your budget, doesn’t make you a cheapskate. The dangers of throwing money around on a first date can lead your date into a false sense of (how generous you are) and if this then isn’t a constant (how cheap you are) be realistic. Also, consideration needs to be taken into account re -your dates finances, spending to big may make her feel out of your league!
    3. Do something that doesn’t require new clothes, they are often uncomfortable and because you’re not used to them they may rip or gape. It is far easier to wear your happy, easy-to-wear older clothes, concentrate on being you.
    4. Go where you can have a proper conversation!! Easy for me to say, the worst first date is at the movies, no conversation, people shushing you, unexpected embarrassing scenes on screen. Go where you can easily chat.
    5. Find a local venue, Long trips, frayed nerves, bad transport links not a good idea for a first date. If you live a fair distance meets in the middle.
    6. Pick an activity that doesn’t involve loads of alcohol. Difficult, especially if you suffer from first night nerves. It can lead you into all kinds of tricky situations.
    7. Find an activity that doesn’t last for more than a couple of hours. A good first date is usually short.  The key here is to leave them wanting more. If you both had a great time you will easily want date number two. If on the other hand, you didn’t enjoy each other’s company, then a couple of hours are no big deal.
    8. Leave time to get to know each other. A date full of too much activity keeps you busy, but if the purpose of the date is a chance to get to know one another, some quiet time is a good idea. Noise and bustle are distracting.

  • CUTV News Welcomes Freda Brown of Divorce Financial Services

CUTV News Welcomes Freda Brown of Divorce Financial Services

    Press Release

    Oct 27, 2016

CUTV News announced today that Freda Brown, founder of Divorce Financial Services, has been featured in an exclusive sit-down interview with host Jim Masters on the financial challenges of divorce.

All assets accumulated during marriage are considered marital property. When a couple chooses to file for divorce, these assets are subject to division.

Anyone who is thinking about divorce should speak to a financial advisor first.

    Freda Brown, CDFA

According to a recent study conducted by Forbes, the average cost of a contested divorce ranges from $15,000 to $30,000, with most of that money spent on legal fees.

Thankfully, there is a way to make the process more manageable, both financially and emotionally.

Freda Brown is a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst (CDFA) and the founder of Divorce Financial Services, where she helps individuals and couples to navigate the financial issues associated with the division of marital assets and reach a settlement that is financially equitable for both parties.

“Anyone who is thinking about divorce should speak to a financial advisor first,” says Freda. “I give my clients an educational view of their situation so they can make informed choices.”

According to Freda, different couples divorce for different reasons. Each couple has a different story and different problems. Most importantly, everyone’s finances are completely different, so you can’t take a cookie-cutter approach.

As a CDFA, Freda can assist in the preparation of financial statements, look for inconsistencies in your spouse’s financial statement, and determine the possible tax consequences associated with the division of property, property notes, pensions, retirement, alimony and child support.

“There are a lot of questions divorcing couples don’t ask themselves before they begin this process,” says Freda. “So my clients value the input I give them because it allows them to get past the emotions of the situation and move forward.”

Ryan Thomas to Speak at the Michigan Parental Alienation Awareness Day Rally on April 25th

Alienated child, Ryan Thomas, to speak at Michigan Parental Alienation Awareness Rally on April 25th.

    Press Release

    Apr 19, 2016

As the April 25th rally for Parental Alienation Awareness Day in the state of Michigan approaches, Dads and Moms of Michigan is pleased to welcome Ryan Thomas to the agenda.

Ryan Thomas is a child of parental alienation who discovered the lies and manipulation he was under and reunited with his Dad after decades apart.

“As a child of parental alienation, this rally allows me to give a behind-the-scenes look at how parental alienation works from a child’s point of view and why it is so damaging. Alienation hides in plain sight pretending to be love, which is why parents and professionals must know how to recognize it and stop it.”

    Ryan Thomas

Ryan was raised to believe his Dad never truly cared for him and that story was re-enforced and manufactured every moment of his life. With his perception and love for his dad constantly tainted, the stress become so unbearable that he severed the relationship as a young teenager.  In his late 20’s, Ryan reconnected with his dad and slowly built a new “friendship.” He found the most kind, loving man, and the best relationship of his life.

Ryan is the author of several books including; Sabotaged: 3 Hidden Weapons of Parental Alienation and The Alienated Mind: Why Parental Alienation is So Powerful Through the Eyes of a Child. He is also the creator of “The Reconnect Formula,” a 5-week online video training program. Ryan also offers workshops, video series, and group coaching calls to give practical, real-life strategies to create breakthroughs. Ryan is leading a movement for the #RightToReunite children and their families, and to transform alienated parents into accepted parents.

“As a child of parental alienation, this rally allows me to give a behind-the-scenes look at how parental alienation works from a child’s point of view and why it is so damaging. Alienation hides in plain sight pretending to be love, which is why parents and professionals must know how to recognize it and stop it.” Thomas said.

Ryan Thomas joins an impressive line-up guests and speakers including Rep. Tim Greimel (D-Auburn Hills), Dr. Douglas Darnall, Shelly Loomus, JD, MSW, John Langlois and musical guest, Curtis Lee Putman.

The rally is scheduled to take place from 1:30 – 4:00pm ET at NOAH’S Event Venue, 3391 Cross Creek Pkwy, Auburn Hills, MI 48326.  Participants will enjoy passed hors d’oeuvres, refreshments and live music. To register for this free event, please visit https://parally.eventbrite.com.

  • Curtis Lee Putman to Perform at the Michigan Parental Alienation Awareness Day Rally on April 25th.

Curtis Lee Putman to Perform at the Michigan Parental Alienation Awareness Day Rally on April 25th.

    Press Release

    updated: Apr 15, 2016

April 25th is Parental Alienation Awareness Day in the state of Michigan, as signed in a proclamation by Gov. Rick Snyder.  As interest builds for upcoming Parental Alienation Awareness Day Rally on April 25th, Dads and Moms of Michigan announced additions to the rally line-up this week.

Michigan House Minority Leader, Rep. Tim Greimel (D-Auburn Hills) will be kicking off the event with a champagne toast and “Bubbles of Love” release.

“It’s an honor to be part of this rally. Parental Alienation is one of the cruelest forms of child abuse, and arguably the least understood. Hopefully through awareness and accountability, we can force the necessary change in the family court system to end the enablement and encouragement by the system that’s sole focus should be protecting children from abuse.”

Curtis Lee Putman, Musician & Songwriter

One of the original pioneers in the study of parental alienation, Douglas Darnall, PhD, has provided a pre-recorded video message to inspire and encourage the rally-goers. Dr. Darnall has been advocating for children and families victimized by parental alienation for the past 25 years. An Ohio licensed psychologist since 1979, he worked as a court psychologist for Trumbull County Family Court for 21 years and is currently CEO at PsyCare, Inc. He has published Divorce Casualties: Understanding Parental Alienation, Divorce Casualties: Protecting your Children from Parental Alienation and Beyond Divorce Casualties: Reuniting the Alienated Family. He has appeared in court on over one hundred cases in twelve states as an expert witness involving custody, parental alienation, and other forensic matters. He has also appeared on the Montel Show and Court TV. He has given presentations at both State and National Conferences including the Missouri State Bar and North Dakota State Bar Associations, AFCC, Children’s Rights Council, and Local and State Bar Associations.

Singer / Songwriter, Curtis Lee Putman, announced his support of the rally this week as well, offering his own story on parental alienation and a musical performance.

“It’s an honor to be part of this rally. Parental Alienation is one of the cruelest forms of child abuse, and arguably the least understood. Hopefully through awareness and accountability, we can force the necessary change in the family court system to end the enablement and encouragement by the system that’s sole focus should be protecting children from abuse,” Putman said.

Curtis Lee Putman’s country and blues music is as memorable, distinctive and genuine as Kalamazoo, MI, where he was born, raised and still calls home. Putman also works in Nashville and Montgomery while managing his namesake CLP Music Productions label. Putman has been recognized by the 13th Annual Independent Music Awards in a spotlight artist feature and is a coed favorite wherever he brings the party. Jeff Cummings from the Montgomery Area Musicians association described him as “what happens when Johnny Cash, Waylon and Hank Sr. collide with John Lee Hooker and Lightning Hopkins.” Putman is currently finishing his long awaited next release entitled “#MyTruth,” with the first single debuting at this event entitled, #TallintheSaddle.” This song speaks to the experience Curtis went through fighting for his life as an alienated father through a protracted divorce, extensive custody battle; culminating in being wrongly accused of child abuse, fighting the courts and system to the highest levels, and finally exonerating himself. The ultimate resolution has been a recent full reconciliation with his daughters who were and still are the center of his world and his heart.

Joining Putman on stage will be his daughter, Sabrina, who is a testimony to reunification after alienation.

Dr. Darnell & Putman join our previously announced speakers, Shelly Loomus, JD, MSW and John Langlois. “Together we can provide valuable information and inspiration for sowing the seeds of peaceful shared parenting. Children need both parents,” Dads and Moms of Michigan’s President & Executive Director, John Langlois said.

The rally is scheduled to take place from 1:30 – 4:00pm ET at NOAH’S Event Venue, 3391 Cross Creek Pkwy Auburn Hills MI 48326.  Participants will enjoy passed hors d’oeuvres, refreshments and live music. To register for this free event, please visit https://parally.eventbrite.com.
