    For many men, being a good lover has a significant connection to feeling masculine. 

    As the thinking goes, being able to send your partner into overwhelming paroxysms of sexual ecstasy is a sign that you’re for real, tough, and can’t be made fun of by your peers. 

    On the flip side, if you struggle to please your partner, how manly can you really be?

    While there are many reasons to aspire to being great in bed, the notion that any man experiencing sexual dysfunction is somehow less than in any way is deeply problematic. One of the main instances that has guys feeling insecure or unimpressive sexually is when they experience premature ejaculation

    Unfortunately, most guys don’t necessarily understand what P.E. is or how it functions, since it’s not typically something that’s covered in sex education in any kind of depth. 

    In order to get a clearer picture of premature ejaculation and how it functions, AskMen spoke to several sex experts in hopes they’ll debunk some of the more common myths when it comes to finishing earlier than expected.


    What Is Premature Ejaculation?


    In order to debunk any myths about premature ejaculation, it’s important first to understand what, exactly, it is.

    If you’re looking for a specific number of seconds or minutes, however, that’s now exactly how it works. P.E. isn’t a question of how long you last — it’s a question of how long you last as compared to your own expectations.

    “Premature ejaculation is when the man ejaculates before he or his partner would like,” says Tami Rose of Romantic Adventures.

    For many people, the perception is that P.E. occurs during penetrative sex, often vaginal, but that doesn’t need to be the case. 

    “Originally it was defined by intercourse, but it is now more widely seen as any sexual activity,” says SKYN Condoms’ sex and intimacy expert and author Gigi Engle. “It can either be a lifelong condition — meaning it’s an ongoing condition. Or it can be acquired, meaning it is a new condition.”

    Either way, it counts as premature ejaculation if it only happens once, but it’s typically not something to be concerned about unless it’s occurring consistently. Essentially, if you always ejaculate after 15 seconds of penetration when your partner wants you to last half an hour, consider that premature ejaculation. If on one occasion, you ejaculate after six minutes of oral sex when you wanted to last for 12, that’s also P.E.

    It’s really a question of whether it’s impacting your sexual happiness or not. If you typically cum after three or four minutes, but both you and your partner are happy with it, P.E. wouldn’t be the proper label.

    What Causes Premature Ejaculation? 

    Unfortunately, there isn’t one easy answer to what causes premature ejaculation.

    “The exact cause […] is unknown, with little data to effectively support the most known biological and psychological hypotheses, including anxiety and penile hypersensitivity,” says Shadeen Francis, a licensed marriage and family therapist who specializes in sex therapy and social justice. “It may be most reasonable to say that the cause varies by person and by circumstance (for example, substance use, history of early ejaculation, health, sexual habits).”

    But before you can understand how P.E. happens, it’s important to first understand how ejaculation works, period.

    “Ejaculation happens when the muscles at the base of the penis contract, but the signal to contract is delivered by the central nervous system,” explains Rose. “So you have to figure out if it is a software problem (emotional stimulus), a hardware problem (muscle strength or weakness), or an electrical problem (nervous system misfire or miscommunication).”


    Premature Ejaculation Myths, Debunked


    MYTH: Not Many Guys Experience P.E. 

    “The biggest myth about premature ejaculation is that it’s not a common thing that happens,” says Engle. On the contrary, she notes that “it’s extremely common and most men will deal with it at some point in their lives.”

    Francis agrees, adding that “premature ejaculation is the most common sexual concern among men.” In addition to a majority of men experiencing it at some point or other, “up to 25% of men experience it consistently.”

    If you feel like you’re the only one, know that that’s far from the case. A big reason you’ve never heard your buddies admit to this kind of thing is because there’s this pre-existing shame around it, not because they’ve never had the experience! 

    MYTH: P.E. Is Due to Low Testosterone

    The relationship between testosterone levels and a man’s ability to conform to various masculine ideals is one that’s often the source of misinformation, and that’s no different in the case of premature ejaculation.

    “The most common myth I have heard about premature ejaculation is that it is a sign of low testosterone,” says Francis. “This myth likely was birthed out of cis-sexist, shame-based messages about maleness and masculinity being connected to ‘lasting in bed.’ However, there is no link between testosterone and premature ejaculation (or masculinity, for that matter).”

    MYTH: P.E. Is All in Your Head

    On the flip side, some people believe premature ejaculation issues have no purely physical component at all — but that isn’t true either. 

    “Sometimes, P.E. is a psychological issue (including sexual abuse, poor body image, depression, worrying about PE, and guilty feelings that cause you to rush through sex), but often folks with PE have an over-sensitive penis head, which creates a ‘low ejaculatory threshold,’” says Rachel Wright, MA, LMFT, a relationship expert and psychotherapist. “Additionally, irregular hormone levels, irregular levels of brain chemicals, and/or swelling and infection of the prostate or urethra.”

    MYTH: If You Can’t Last as Long as a Porn Star, You Have P.E. 

    With premature ejaculation being a question of perception, not of time, it’s something that’s changeable according to how long you think you should be lasting in bed. And one issue there is mainstream porn’s depiction of actors who last much, much longer than average. 

    “Pornography has made a huge impact on what people think sex should look like,” says Amy Baldwin, sex educator and co-host of the “Shameless Sex” podcast. “While pornography is great for entertainment, it can be rather harmful as a sex educator. Porn stars are trained to postpone ejaculation for long periods of time as part of their job.”

    That’s not to say that you couldn’t also last that long, but just that if you don’t, it’s not a sign that there’s anything wrong with you. 

    “There is no universal desired duration of sex, but the average is 5.4 minutes,” adds sexologist Dr. Jess O’Reilly, co-host of Last Longer In Bed: 6 Steps to Master Premature Ejaculation. “This means that 3 minutes and 7 minutes are also within the range of normal. Those who have sex for longer periods of time often stop, slow down, change things up and don’t spend the whole time thrusting.”

    MYTH: It’s Impossible to Cure P.E.

    If your experiences with sex involve frustration from wondering why you keep cumming before you (or your partner) wanted it, it can feel daunting. However, it’s not something that’s etched in stone. Meaning, if your P.E. is psychological in nature, it is possible to improve the situation.

    “There are practices available to make the desired shifts,” suggests Baldwin. “Ejaculatory control issues are usually a mental barrier/looping pattern rather than a physiological dilemma. The way to get ‘unstuck’ is to start practicing slow, mindful masturbation with no goals (orgasm) and complete presence for all of the body’s sensations, thoughts and experiences. The penis owner can set a timer for 10-20 minutes and slowly self pleasure without toys or porn, and if/when they feel like they are getting close to orgasm then they stop or slow down while taking long deep breaths.”

    Baldwin continues, noting that an orgasm can occur when “the timer goes off, but the key is to learn to stay in-tune with the body while riding the pleasure wave a couple notches below the point of orgasm for an extended period of time.” 

    “They are reprogramming/retraining their body. It is 100% doable for most folks, but it takes a lot of time, patience and dedication,” she adds.

    MYTH: P.E. Can Be Cured With Viagra

    According to Francis, some people try to approach their P.E. with medication that’s designed to combat an entirely different issue — erectile dysfunction. 

    “A lot of folks take Viagra as a DIY solution, but this is not a great idea,” states Francis. “Not only is it usually ineffective, it also furthers the experience of people feeling out of relationship with their penis. If you are struggling with the timing of your ejaculation, please consider working with a sex therapist and making an appointment with a urologist who is experienced with sexual concerns.”

    MYTH: Alcohol Can Help Reduce P.E.

    There’s a certain logic at play here — alcohol can function as a numbing agent, which you’d think would help in situations where you’re overly physically sensitive. But that’s not quite how it works, says Abbas Kanani, superintendent pharmacist for Chemist Click.

    “Excess drinking or smoking can contribute to the rise of premature ejaculation instances in men,” he explains. “Drinking can interfere with signals between the brain and the genitals, which may lead to men ejaculating too quickly. Excessive consumption of alcohol has been shown to inhibit testosterone production in the testes and also constrict the blood vessels in the penis, leading to erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation issues.”

    MYTH: P.E. Lessens With Age

    Premature ejaculation is, culturally speaking, something we often associate with those on the younger, less-experienced side of things — the implication being that it should go away naturally as you get older and more sexually experienced.

    In fact, according to sexologist Tanya Bass, that’s not exactly the case. Many guys, she notes, “may experience a change in ejaculation due to age and the accompanied physiological changes in the body,” but that’s not strictly speaking an age thing.

    “Changes can be due to various health conditions or side effects from medications,” adds Bass.

    In fact, counter to the stereotype, she clarifies that “many studies indicate that older men are more likely to experience premature ejaculation due to comorbidities such as cardiovascular risk factors.”

    MYTH: Sex Toys Can Fix P.E. 

    “From my perspective in the male toys field, there are a lot of supposed cures offered for P.E. that I think consumers should be wary of,” says Brian Sloan, inventor of the Autoblow toys. “The FDA classifies P.E. as a medical problem and many toys that offer claims of curing P.E. are actually making those claims without any scientific basis.” 

    Sloan notes that some sex toys are marketed as devices you can use to “‘practice’ lasting longer, but the reality is that many men with P.E. can last as long as they want by themselves and the problem shows itself only during partner play.”

    “Sex toys may be fun to play with,” states Sloan, “and some men may benefit from using them to address their P.E. problems, but it’s probably best for men to tell their doctor what they are experiencing and go from there.”

    MYTH: You Can’t Be a Good Lover If You Experience P.E. 

    At the end of the day, ejaculating sooner than you want to can be a humbling experience. Consider it a reminder that our bodies are not completely under our control, often acting in ways we don’t like. But if you’re consistently ejaculating after not much sexual contact, that doesn’t by any means mean you can’t be great in bed.  

    Lots of guys — perhaps because this is what they see in porn — believe that the key to being a sex god is hours of pounding with a giant, rock-hard erection, but there’s very little truth to that. 

    “Many (non-porn performer) vulva-owners generally don’t want consistent thrusting/penetration for the extended period of time porn portrays,” says Baldwin. “Sure, it serves a time and place. But vulva-owners like all kinds of touch that do not have to involve a hard penis thrusting in and out.”

    Although some may enjoy that kind of intense, long-lasting penetration, most people — whatever their gender — also appreciate other things in bed. Getting good at pleasing your partner with your mouth, your hands, and various sex toys can massively unlock your sexual potential without your penis ever coming into contact with them.

    People “often like the soft touch of mouths and tongues, or the precision touch of fingers and hands,” says Baldwin. “Society often puts too much emphasis on the performance of the penis during penetrative sex.”

    When you let penetration be just a portion of sex rather than the primary focus, ejaculating after only a few minutes doesn’t mean that the varying levels of pleasure have to necessarily stop, too.

    To be fully transparent, when I first heard “Elite Singles”, I thought it was going to be some private meeting of a bunch of snobby socialites who were “too good and too elite for the rest of the world”. Thankfully, my parents taught me to never judge a book by it’s cover because (as you’ll see) that is not the case.

    While I may have had some initial reservations about the name of this dating app, I wanted to find out once and for all if the Elite Singles dating app was worth it or not. To do that, I commissioned our team of experts to review Elite Singles from top to bottom and on all three platforms it’s available on (iOS, Android, and desktop).

    Is Elite Singles Worth It? – The Bottom Line Upfront

    Elite Singles scored a 9.1 out of 10 in our most recent review. The biggest pro contributing to this score was the high caliber of singles and niche focus for professional and educated singles. The biggest drawback we found was that the site doesn’t enforce fully completing profiles, which led to us seeing some empty profiles upon our initial testing.

    Alright, so let’s start with what Elite Singles claims it brings to the table.

    Elite Singles claims to be a dating app catered toward singles who are more established in life, have higher levels of education or advanced training, and aren’t looking to play games. According to their website, over 85% of their members are considered “highly educated.”

    Do they live up to that claim? Honestly, I’d say so—with a few reservations. From my experience and our team’s testing, the app is packed with quality singles who aren’t the snobby socialites I expected to see, but were goal-driven and accomplished people looking for someone to do life with.

    While I did see a lot of people who were in that highly educated category as promised, I didn’t see much toward how Elite Singles was validating the claim of 85% being in that group. It’s certainly possible (and probably likely) that they have data to substantiate that; I’m just saying that I personally couldn’t find any way they’d know that definitively other than maybe based on what users were claiming in their profiles.

    Regardless of that fact, I was pleasantly greeted with a high quality dating experience and a lot of authentic, driven, educated, and accomplished singles looking for love.

    Regarding the actual experience of using the Elite Singles apps, there were things our team liked and things we didn’t. The biggest pro in this area was that things weren’t unnecessarily overcomplicated. The Elite Singles user interface was intuitive and not overloaded with features that make us wonder why they’re even there.

    The biggest drawback to the user experience was there weren’t hard requirements for users to complete their profiles or upload photos before being granted access. While this is nice if you just want to quickly check things out, it does leave quite a few empty-ish feeling profiles you have to sort through. There were plenty of robustly filled out profiles, but it wasn’t 100% across the board like we’d prefer. Additionally, there is no search function, so you will have to be onboard with letting Elite Singles take the lead.

    Bottom line, Elite Singles gets a checkmark in the win column from me and our team as they provide an easy-to-use dating app filled with a lot of driven and successful singles who are looking for real relationships.

    How does Elite Singles Work?

    Elite Singles works through a hybrid approach of curated matching and a traditional catalog style. When you create your account, you answer questions about your interests, what you’re looking for, and what’s most important to you with a mate. Elite Singles uses this data to present you with curated matches who you can message if you’re interested.

    If you prefer to take the reins yourself, you can continually adjust your matching preferences to look through all of the matches in your area. While this isn’t a traditional search function, you can still use it as it is.

    Elite Singles does also have a swipe-style/mutual-match feature for those looking for a little randomness in their dating journey. The “Have You Met?” feature isn’t as prominent as it is on other dating apps (maybe a good thing), but is more complimentary to the more traditional matchmaking approached discussed above.

    Are there any great features?

    As mentioned, Elite Singles does a nice job of not overloading you with features to where it takes you weeks to learn how to use everything. However, that doesn’t mean they don’t still offer a nice array of more pertinent and appropriate features to help you in your matchmaking search.

    Here are a few of the features that stood out to our team the most during our most recent Elite Singles review.

    The Curated Matches Process

    The core feature and functionality of the Elite Singles dating app is the curated matching. Based on your answers to your onboarding questions as well as your matching preferences (which you can change at any time), you’re presented with your matches in a list format as shown here:

    Unlike some other dating apps, these curated matches are all shown to you at once and not drip-fed over the course of days, weeks, or months. For people who want it all at once, this is a win. For people who may be easily overloaded or like the idea of taking things slowly, this will be a bit of a miss if you don’t have some self control.

    While we’re not totally privy to the Elite Singles algorithm, the team did have some observations that are worth noting. It looks like what matches show is almost solely dependent on your matching preferences and very few of your onboarding answers. Where the onboarding answers seem to come more into play is with the compatibility score (which you see in the top right of every photo) and the order in which your matches are shown (more compatible to the top).

    In other words, your onboarding answer don’t seem to preclude anyone from making your list of matches, so long as they match your currently set preferences.

    The Search Function

    During all of our Elite Singles review, our team has been unable to locate a traditional search function where you can conduct one-off searches for different groups of singles. But that statement is a bit misleading as there is a workaround to search for matches in your area.

    If you click your “Preferences” tab, you’ll be able to adjust what types of people you’re being shown in your matches. This is effectively a search function, but it saves your settings and affects your main results until you change it.

    Here are the options you’re able to “search” by through that tab:

    • Age and how important that is
    • Your height (and how important your partner being similar is to you)
    • Distance of matches and how important it is
    • If you would date someone with children under 18
    • If you want to have children in the future
    • How important a partner with a similar education level is
    • How important a partner with a similar income level is
    • Smoking and drinking habits (and how important it is in a partner)
    • The ethnicity of your partner (can select multiple or all options and how important it is)
    • The religion of your partner (can select multiple or all options and how important it is)

    Have You Met? Feature

    As mentioned earlier, Elite Singles does have their own mutual-match swipe feature. This feature works a lot like Tinder or something of that sort where you have a group of singles that you can swipe through indicating whether you like them or not. It’s not an actual swipe (you click an X or a smiley face), but you get the idea. Where it differs greatly from Tinder is that it shows you a lot of information about the person as well. It’s not strictly a looks thing.

    Additionally, you don’t have to have a mutual match in order to send a message. If you see someone you like, you can send them a message right away and let them know you’re interested. If there is a mutual match, though, you both will be notified similar to other swipe-style dating apps.

    Additional Features

    In addition to all of this, they have a few more features that will help you to have a successful online dating experience. They’ll even show you who visited your page, who smiled at you, and the messaging platform is simple, straightforward, and easy to use.

    One additional thing we liked during our Elite Singles review was that the Matches and the Have You Met? people were not all the same. A lot of times online dating sites will have a bunch of different features for meeting people, but they will just show you the same people in each. It was a nice change to see this not the case.

    How much does Elite Singles cost?

    Regarding pricing, Elite Singles does come in higher than some of the smaller sites on the market and a price right around comparable with some of the big players. Our initial thoughts are always that you’re going to get what you pay for (why we shy away from free online dating sites). You’ll see there are three different plans to choose from, but they all come with the exact same features. As is standard in the online dating industry, the longer the term you sign up for, the less expensive your membership is.

    One additional positive here is that there aren’t any a la carte addons that you have to worry about paying for or that you have to worry about other users paying for to get an advantage over you.     Elite Singles Complaints

    As stated, we like to be thorough during our reviews and look at things from both sides of the aisle. Here are some of the complaints that have been emailed to us, as well as a look at some of the more common complaints we see. It’s important to note, these are not our statements or opinions. They are statements of other people we are sharing for you to interpret how you please.

    This was the only complaint that was sent to us. Additionally, though, some users complain about the lack of photos and the number of incomplete profiles. We’ve seen some users complaining about pricing and not realizing how the payment plans work, but that’s something we see with pretty much any dating app.

    Sometimes you check out a dating app and you just realize that it’s not right for you—even if it’s an amazing site. And if that’s how you’re feeling with Elite Singles, that’s totally okay! That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be able to find someone special, though. What we wanted to do is offer a few suggestions for Elite Singles alternatives that you can try. Some of these apps and sites are similar to Elite Singles and some will be somewhat different.

    • eHarmony – If you’re looking for more serious dating but you just don’t like how Elite Singles approaches it, eHarmony might be a better option. Unlike Elite Singles, there is really no room at all for casual dating, though, so make sure you only choose this alternate option if you’re looking for a committed relationship.
    • Zoosk – With all this serious talk, some of you might be starting to sweat! If you’re not looking for something serious or maybe you want to take things slow or you’re just not sure what you want yet, that’s okay. While Elite Singles still could work for you, a site like Zoosk might be a better fit. With its 35 million members, the site caters to all relationship goals (casual, serious, hookups, etc). And what’s really nice is that you can change what you’re looking for with the click of a button, so the site can grow with you as your goals change (or stay the same).
    • The League – An amazing option for people looking to keep that elite status up is The League dating app. Touted as an app that’s truly for the elite of the elite, it’s an obvious option to include in the conversation. A few of the biggest differences between The League and Elite Singles are that The League requires users to get on a wait list to join, comes with a higher price tag, and you have to be approved (based on internal quality standards) to join the app. These aren’t necessarily bad things if you’re truly looking for elite dating.

    What is Elite Singles?

    Elite Singles is an online dating company founded in 2009 by the German founders of the online dating site eDarling. The site is available through desktop, Google Play, and the iOS store. The main focus and driving force behind what Elite Singles is would be its focus on ‘elite’ dating.

    The Sexual Health Centre: Young people deserve guidance around online relationships — No Bias, No Judgement, No Exception

    Teenagers are growing up in a virtual world, and technology has become an integral part of their education, communication and relationships.

    This is a reality that the Sexual Health Centre in Cork has embraced. The Centre has today (Tuesday) launched a new campaign to raise awareness of the issues that teens may come up against online in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

    “Digital and social media has opened up a world of opportunity for young people by enabling them to stay informed and connected, more than any generation before them,” noted the Centre’s manager, Catherine Kennedy.

    “As much of the virtual world is difficult to regulate, it is important that young people are given unbiased, up to date information regarding the relationships and behaviours that they encounter, and engage in, online.

    “The ‘Screen-age Kicks’ guide was inspired by the National Youth Council of Ireland’s 2016 report on the ‘Screenagers’ international research project, which included consultations with young people regarding their experiences of social and digital media in the youth work setting.

    “While young people today experience the very same curiosity and self-exploration as their parents did as teens, this period of discovery has now been moved to the online world.

    “The rate at which technology has grown in recent years has also meant that parents are often left to play catch-up when it comes to their teenagers’ development.

    “The ‘Screen-age Kicks’ guide deals with topics such as ‘trolling’, ‘sexting’, communication skills, consent, and porn. Parents and youth workers need to be equipped to approach these issues in an informed and practical manner.

    Ms. Kennedy highlighted the need for guidance around teen health and relationships in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing measures:

    “As young people have been spending more time at home and online, issues around online relationships, consent and porn have come to the fore.

    “Many Irish teens and parents have not been given the tools or guidance to deal with these issues during the pandemic, and the Sexual Health Centre is seeking to bridge that gap.

    “The Sexual Health Centre has adapted all of its services – for example, youth workshops and counselling services are now taking place online and over the phone, and a free condom mail-out system is in operation.

    “Throughout the pandemic, all of our staff have continued to be totally committed to meeting clients’ needs and ensuring service delivery with no bias, no judgement, and no exception,” concluded Ms. Kennedy.


    The Sexual Health Centre provides free virtual workshops on relationships and sexual health, for young people.

    While these sexual hiatuses are totally normal regardless of the reasoning, it’s worth taking a look at the side effects of abstinence. AskMen spoke with a few experts to decipher what exactly happens when you don’t have sex for a long, long time.


    Pros and Cons of Abstaining From Sex for a While


    Con: Feeling More Stressed

    Ever noticed how sex is a killer stress reliever? Whether you’ve got a ton of looming deadlines, you’re dealing with family drama or there’s a global pandemic going on, getting laid seems to help you cope a little better. Why? Well, sex releases endorphins, which reduce feelings of discomfort and pain and boost feelings of pleasure.

    If you can’t use sex to cope, all that stress may feel less manageable. This sex-stress connection may help to explain why an Oregon State University study determined that couples who had active sex lives were much happier at work, and a 2006 study in the medical journal Biological Psychology found that people who were getting busy regularly had lower blood pressure levels than those who weren’t.

    Keep in mind that sex isn’t the only way to experience an endorphin rush — you can also trigger a release of these feel-good hormones by exercising, laughing, meditating, or even eating spicy foods.

    Pro: Lowered Risk of STDs and STIs

    It’s not all doom and gloom when you’re not getting any since your risk of sexually transmitted diseases and infections goes way down. Herpes can be spread through kissing or skin-to-skin contact, and you can catch some STIs without having sex, but on the whole, odds are pretty slim that you’ll contract anything when you’re not getting any.

    As Rebecca Torosian, an intimacy behavioral therapist, says, “Masturbation is the safest form of sex known to us.” How’s that for justification to rub one out?

    Con: A Dampened Mood

    Remember those aforementioned endorphins? Well, when you’re not getting those sex-induced pick-me-ups, you may notice a slight difference in your mood.

    “You may find yourself missing the positive endorphin and oxytocin releases that emerge when enjoying a satisfying sexual encounter,” explains Torosian. “Loneliness and separation anxiety may develop into a depressive state.”

    To be clear, just because you stop having sex doesn’t mean you’re going to become depressed. The good news here? You don’t need to have sex to reap these benefits, as Torosian says masturbation is just as effective at triggering the same chemical releases that lower stress and make you feel happy.

    Pro: Better, Hotter Sex the Next Time You Have It

    You know how that buffalo chicken calzone tastes even more delicious after you’ve been eating healthy all week? Well, you’ll probably get the same effect when you stop having sex for a while.

    “Science suggests that a sex fast can enhance sexual desire,” says sexologist Jess O’Reilly, PhD., host of the @SexWithDrJess Podcast.

    For one, you’ll have some time to think about what you want out of sex, and maybe you’ll even come up with a few new things you’d like to try.

    O’Reilly also notes that a sex suspension can relieve some of the performance pressure that men experience in the bedroom, allowing them to shift their focus away from the frequency of encounters and more toward the quality of those interactions. Best of all, she explains that you may find that the intensity of the pleasurable response you get during sex is significantly heightened when you do become sexually active again.

    Con: A Slightly Weaker Immune System

    Did you know that regular orgasms may actually help you to ward off illness? Psychologists Carl Charnetski and Francis Brennan Jr. conducted a study in which they collected saliva samples from 111 college students who were having sex once or twice a week. What they found was that those samples had an extremely high concentration of the antibody immunoglobulin A, which plays a key role in immune function and is known to fight the common cold.

    If you’re not getting busy regularly, keeping your immune system from getting that boost, there may be a slight chance you’re more prone to getting sick. That said, there are plenty of other ways to keep your immune system in tip-top condition: getting plenty of sleep every night, taking certain supplements, staying physically active, and maintaining a healthy diet.

    Pro: Time to Embrace Other Life Issues Head-On

    Sex is just as much of a mental and emotional experience as it is a physical experience. If you’re in a relationship where the sex hasn’t been as fulfilling for either of you as it was in the past, there’s a chance that’s because you’re missing out on some of the other crucial components.

    However, experts say a sex break can allow you to dive into some of the deeper issues that may be getting in the way of intimacy.

    “You have an opportunity to allow negative feelings and emotions to surface that we may be using sex to avoid,” explains Torosian. “This may create the perfect circumstances to address them and thereby deepen your trust and capacity to be vulnerable and more emotionally available and truthful with your partner.”

    Con: A Hit to Your Confidence or Self-Esteem

    Don’t be surprised if you feel like you’ve lost a little of your mojo after a long stretch without getting any.

    “Losing confidence in one’s sex skills can happen whenever there are long intervals in between having sex,” says Torosian. “This is similar to the self-doubt that can arise when not engaging in any physical engagement that had once been consistent. In addition, this can feel more intense because you can also be grieving the loss of intimacy.”

    Here’s the thing, though: Self-touch can counteract that negative effect.

    According to O’Reilly, some of the advantages to masturbation include potentially improved sleep, fostering a stronger connection to your body, and improved sexual functioning as you get to know your physical responses.

    “Just as there are benefits associated with having sex, there are also potential benefits to abstaining from sex,” she says. “It can leave you with more time to focus on other goals related to health, fitness, work, school, spirituality, travel, or learning a new skill.”

    Torosian agrees, adding, There is no cause to be worried about not having sex for a while. This time may be spent developing other (neglected) areas of our lives, such as exploring new fields of interest — and it may be a good time to explore a deeper understanding of our sexuality.”

    The bottom line? Going without sex may come with a few possible pitfalls. but it’s not the end of the world. Besides, you don’t need a partner to experience a mind-blowing orgasm. In the end, you may just find your sex life more satisfying than ever after your little hiatus.

    “This pandemic has put immense pressure on people in their day to day lives. In light of this, self-awareness and communication skills are increasingly important for maintaining healthy relationships and a positive environment at home.

    “It is normal to feel low and negative at times. The real issue lies in people not recognising their own emotional reactions.

    Care to take a guess what the preferred material was for men? Well, to no real surprise, 35% of survey takers went the ultra thin route (like you’re not even wearing a condom at all), 27% selected latex, and 15 percent with with textured/ribbed.

    9% of men said that they’re not too picky when it comes to the material on their peen, 7% percent went for non-latex, and 5% went towards lambskin.

    As for where people purchase their condoms? 39% of men and women see no problem with picking ’em up at their nearest drugstore, 25% head to the supermarket, and 17% go the discreet route with shopping online. Other options saw bodega coming in with 8%, and sex shop or free clinic tying at 3%.

    Everything You Need to Know About Getting Tested for STIs

    We treat sexually transmitted infections differently from other infections. If your friend has a cold, you say, “Oh, that sucks,” not, “Gross, you should have been more careful!” 

    If there’s a virus going around, you get a pamphlet explaining what it is and how not to catch it — not shamed for being unclean. Rather than waiting until they’re teenagers and telling them not to hang out with certain people, we vaccinate children to keep them safe from certain diseases. 

    But in many people’s minds, sexually transmitted infections — STIs for short, and formerly known as STDs — are different. Unfortunately, because of their association with sex, they’re often seen as much scarier and more shameful.

    As a result, people tend to approach their sexual health in backwards or unproductive ways by being blissfully ignorant until it’s too late. That said, protecting yourself from STIs isn’t super complex, and unlike other infections, there are cheap and easy ways to find out if you’re affected. 

    AskMen spoke with a handful of sexual health experts to get the info on what you need to know about STI tests, from how they work to why they’re important to why guys often tend to avoid taking them.


    What Is an STI Test?


    “A STI test is done to check if you have a sexually transmitted infection, such as chlamydia, trichomoniasis, gonorrhea, HPV, HIV, herpes, or syphilis,” says Dr. Janet Brito, a sex therapist based in Hawaii. 

    However, not all tests are the same. Depending on what you’re getting tested for, with many tests checking for multiple infections at once, the test may take a different form. Common ways to check for STIs are “via a blood sample, a swab, or a urine analysis,” adds Brito.

    Why Getting Tested Is Important

    If you’ve never been tested before, you might not be entirely clear on why getting tested fairly regularly is important. 

    “If you are sexually active, especially if you are engaging in unprotected sexual activity, participating in high risk sexual behavior (i.e have multiple partners), starting a new relationship, noticing any symptoms (i.e. foul discharge, burning during urination, bumps, or sores around or on genital area, pain, itching, inflammation), it is best to get a STI test to rule out any possible infections and to avoid any health complications that may arise and that could be treated early on,” says Brito. 

    “It is also important to get tested even when you do not have symptoms,” she adds, “as some STIs may be asymptomatic” — meaning you might not see the signs until you’ve already passed it on to someone else — or worse, multiple people. 

    Beyond just treating symptoms as to also avoid infecting other people, knowing your STI status is important to ensure your STI doesn’t develop into something worse if untreated. 

    “It is important to discuss your sexual health practices with your doctor, especially if you are engaging in anal sex,” notes Brito. “An anal pap smear can help to screen for HPV as well. Not receiving proper care for STI symptoms may result in more complicated health challenges, like infertility or cancer.”

    How Often You Should Get Tested

    As for how often you should get tested, there’s no one single answer. 

    It becomes more important in certain specific circumstances, particularly if you notice potential symptoms, and/or when you’re about to start sleeping with a new partner. 

    “The CDC guidelines about how often to get tested are ambiguous because there’s no magic bullet,” explains Lauren Weiniger, cofounder of an app called SAFE, which allows users to privately show their verified STI status on their phone and get tested. “It depends on your lifestyle, and your risk tolerance. The guidelines vary from three to six months, but some people choose to get tested every two weeks.”

    Why Some Guys Avoid Getting Tested

    However, if you’re most guys — particularly straight guys, who often have fewer partners than their queer counterparts — you’re most likely not getting tested every two weeks. 

    You might not be getting tested every three to six months, either. In fact, some guys have never gotten tested, regardless of their sexual history. There are a few reasons why that might be the case. 

    “Some guys may not get tested because they do not know to get tested (i.e. do not have enough comprehensive sex education around the benefits of getting tested),” says Brito. They could also skip getting tested because they “don’t have any symptoms that they are aware of.”

    Perhaps the most pressing issue, however? Guys avoiding getting tested “due to stigma and shame around sexuality and the issue of STIs,” as Brito puts it. “This worry may prevent guys from getting tested and seeking help.”

    In order to help combat that, demystifying STI tests could be useful — so keep reading to find out what they’re like, how they work and how to get one done. 


    The Different Kinds of STI Tests, Explained


    While it might be convenient to take a test that checks for all the different STIs at once, no such test exists (not yet, at least). 

    In countries with universal healthcare like Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and others, syphilis tests are typically covered in whole or in large part. 

    However, in the United States, you might need private insurance in order to pay for an STI test, and depending on which insurance you have and where you go to get tested, your STI test may or may not be covered. If you’re unsure, it’s best to look into it before showing up. 

    That being said, here’s a breakdown of some common STIs and what it’s like to get tested for them: 

    Chlamydia

    Chlamydia is a bacterial infection that typically presents no symptoms. However, when it does, the results are not pleasant.

    Men who come down with chlamydia symptoms often experience burning sensations when they urinate, testicle pain, scrotum swelling and even discharge a secretion from the penis. 

    Luckily, once it’s diagnosed, it’s easily treatable with antibiotics. 

    How the Chlamydia Test Works

    The test for chlamydia is typically an analysis of either a urine sample or a swab of the genital area. 

    How Long It Takes to Get Results

    A standard amount of time to get results back for a chlamydia test is 7 to 10 days. Often, clinics will only contact you if you test positive — meaning if you don’t hear back, you’re in the clear. 

    Gonorrhea

    Like chlamydia, most people with gonorrhea won’t experience symptoms. However, when those symptoms do occur, they include burning sensations, sensitive or broken skin on the genitals and a milky-white discharge of pus.

    Yes, the infection is so named because gonorrhea means “flow of seed” in ancient Greek — doctors at the time mistook the discharge for semen. 

    Gonorrhea is also treated with antibiotics, but over time, some strains of the infection have become increasingly resistant to the drugs. It’s led to a version called “super gonorrhea,” which is more difficult, but not impossible, to cure. 

    How the Gonorrhea Test Works

    Like the chlamydia test, the test for gonorrhea is an analysis of either a urine sample or a swab of the genital area. 

    How Long It Takes to Get Results

    Like chlamydia, gonorrhea tests typically take 7 to 10 days to hear back, and again, if you test negative, you may not be contacted at all. 

    HIV

    HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is the most serious disease that’s sexually transmitted, as it can morph into AIDS, a disease that has historically been quite deadly. 

    Although recent medical advances, such as the development of PReP treatments, have made HIV much less likely to have fatal consequences, knowing your HIV status is still of paramount importance. 

    How the HIV Test Works

    HIV tests are done on a blood sample, meaning either a syringe will be used to draw some blood from your arm, or a finger prick will be performed. 

    How Long It Takes to Get Results

    Some centers offer rapid HIV test results, where you can discover your result in a matter of minutes. However, taking a normal HIV test could mean it’ll take days to weeks to get results. 

    Herpes

    There are two different types of herpes: HSV-1 and HSV-2, which can both produce sores around the mouth and genitals — sores that themselves are infectious.

    Herpes can also leave you with a rash in the genital region, as well as an unpleasant fever. T at the moment, but it can be treated using antiviral medications. If left untreated, however, herpes can have serious effects on various other parts of the body, so taking it seriously is hugely important. 

    How the Herpes Test Works

    The test for herpes differs depending on whether you’re presenting symptoms or not. If no symptoms are present, a blood test is done. If there are symptoms, in addition to the blood test, you’ll get a swab of the affected area done. 

    How Long It Takes to Get Results

    Depending on the type of test, it can take between 1 and 14 days to get results from a herpes test. 

    Syphilis

    Syphilis is a bacterial infection that can have devastating health consequences if left untreated. 

    After the first stage — painless sores appear on or around the genitals but then recede — people with syphilis will begin experiencing an infectious skin rash, intense cold symptoms and even hair loss.

    If it’s still left untreated, the third stage of syphilis involves the disease spreading to various other parts of the body, including the brain, where it can cause serious and wide-ranging damage. However, if syphilis is treated before it begins to progress to the second stage, it’s relatively easy to cure, often requiring just a single shot of penicillin. 

    How the Syphilis Test Works

    A syphilis test is done using either a blood sample or a sample of fluid from a syphilis sore, if symptoms are present. 

    How Long It Takes to Get Results

    Getting your syphilis test results back can take between three and five days.

    HPV

    HPV, which stands for human papillomavirus, is a very common virus; nearly 80 million people are currently infected in the United States. In fact, HPV is so common that nearly all men and women get it at some point in their lives. 

    Most of the time, the virus goes away on its own, but some strains of HPV can lead to cervical cancer if not found and treated.

    “You could possibly be carrying a cancer-causing strain without knowing it,” says Engle. “There isn’t much you can do other than use condoms and be aware and educated about sexual health and wellness.”

    How the HPV Test Works

    There’s currently no test for men who are HPV-positive and don’t show symptoms (which is the vast majority of men).

    How Long It Takes to Get Results

    With no current test for men, there’s no way of knowing. However, if a female partner you’ve had unprotected sex with gets tested for HPV — a fairly good marker of whether you have it — that would take one to three weeks.


    How to Find Out Your STI Status


    Finding a Nearby Testing Location

    Going into an urgent care without insurance can leave you with a bill of over $1,000. That’s why it’s necessary to find sexual health clinics that offer free care to individuals without insurance or accept insurance with a little to zero copay.

    “The best advice I can give is to Google local free clinics in the area and always check for the closest Planned Parenthood,” says Gigi Engle, a certified sex coach and clinical sexologist.

    (If you live in the United States, you can head on over to the Planned Parenthood locator to find the nearest location to you.)

    “At a free clinic you can expect to be seen by a nurse practitioner. They’ll take a blood sample and test for HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea, and sometimes Hepatitis B. They don’t test for herpes unless they expect an infection, meaning that you’re having an outbreak.”

    “You can also talk to your primary care physician, and don’t be afraid to tell them what’s going on. If you feel like you can’t comfortably discuss medical issues with your doctor, find a new one. You should always feel safe,” Engle added.

    The Safe app is yet another option. The app privately shows your verified STI status on your phone, and also links users to testing centers. “With the app, you can skip the doctor and book testing directly at over 30,000 labs across the U.S., usually the same day and in under 15 minutes. It’s only $99 out of pocket, or you can use your insurance to cover the cost,” says Weiniger.

    Using At-Home STI Test Kits

    If you’re in a situation where going to a nearby clinic isn’t a convenient, feasible or available option, you can also make use of the burgeoning at-home STI test kit industry. 

    As with so many industries today, STI tests are something you can have delivered to your front door — but are they as good as getting tested by a professional? At least for the time being, probably not, in part because the method at-home kits use (urine analysis) isn’t the most accurate when compared to getting your blood work done. 

    As well, if you’re already experiencing STI symptoms, you should speak with a doctor about them anyway, so taking an at-home test might not be the most useful approach. 

    That being said, if you’re symptom-free, not engaging in high-risk sexual behavior and just want a quick, relatively accurate checkup, an at-home STI test kit isn’t a terrible idea.

    When to Get an STI Test Done


    1. If You Don’t Plan on Using Condoms With Your Partner

    After a period of dating, it’s not that uncommon for those in a monogamous relationship to decide that condoms aren’t necessary anymore. Prior to having unprotected sex, it’s highly recommended to get tested to ensure that both you and your partner are negative for all STIs — even if you feel completely healthy.

    “Many STIs have a latency period,” warns Weiniger. Meaning, it can take as long as six weeks following intercourse to show up positive for a sexually transmitted infection such as syphilis. “An STI test is a snapshot in time, so while someone may have tested negative a few weeks ago, there’s no guarantee they haven’t been exposed or they weren’t already exposed since that test was valid.”

    That’s why it’s recommended to continue using protection for two months following the last time you had sex with another person. After eight weeks, the tests for all STIs will be the most accurate.

    2. If You or Your Partner Notice Any Physical Changes

    If you start to see some unsightly sores, experience pain urinating, or begin releasing discharge, it’s definitely time to get tested.

    Flu-like symptoms, including a high fever and swollen lymph nodes, could also indicate that you recently contracted a virus (possibly HIV or herpes). If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, you should stop having sex and wait until your results return before having intercourse again.

    While men are significantly more likely than women to show symptoms after acquiring an STI, “STIs can be asymptotic and not just in women,” clarifies Ben Davis, MD, an attending physician at Massachusetts General Hospital’s Sexual Health Clinic. 

    He adds, “Men are commonly asymptotic in the throat and rectum,” which is why it’s necessary for men, especially men who have sex with other men, to have both oral and rectal swabs completed when tested.

    3. If One of You Has Cheated

    If either of you are having unprotected sex with someone outside of the relationship, getting tested is important — even if you didn’t go “all the way.” Gonorrhea, chlamydia, and HSV-2 (genital herpes) can still be passed if oral sex is performed.

    Even if you used a condom when you cheated, it still might be a good idea to go in a get tested, just in case.

    “Since condoms do prevent most STIs, I’m not sure I agree that routine STI testing is indicated after sex with condoms [after cheating],” Davis says. 

    “On the other hand, penetrative intercourse is not the only way to get STIs. You can get it from oral, including rimming. Also, STIs can be spread by skin to skin — HPV and HSV, to name two common ones. So I’d have to say I probably agree it’s a good idea to get tested after cheating with a condom, but I want to strongly make the point that condoms do protect against most STIs.”

    Regardless of whether you’ve experienced it before, or you’re trying to ensure it never happens to you, AskMen spoke with a few experts in the field (and one guy who admitted to experiencing it) to get the lowdown on all things whiskey dick: what it is, why it happens and how to get rid of it if you have it. 


    What Is Whiskey Dick?


    “‘Whiskey dick’ is the (non-medical) term for when you get completely pissed-drunk and cannot perform sexually,” says Dr. Koushik Shaw of the Austin Urology Institute. “While one or two drinks might give you a confidence boost and put some wind in your sails, too many will take the wood out of your rudder. Booze is a nervous system depressant, and if you depress it too much, you won’t be able to perform at all.”

    And despite the name, whiskey dick doesn’t actually have anything to do with drinking whiskey per se.

    “This is dependent on the amount of alcohol, not the type,” explains Shaw. “So switching from whiskey to vodka will not help you here.”

    Who Is Affected by Whiskey Dick?

    Lots of guys probably imagine that issues getting and staying hard are the province of older men, but while erection issues are often associated somewhat (though not entirely) with age, whiskey dick makes no such distinctions.

    “Any sexually active individual [with a penis] who consumes alcohol is putting themselves at risk of whiskey dick,” says Shaw. 

    Beyond that, it’s not a question of how much alcohol you consume in terms of number of drinks, volume of liquid or alcohol by volume percentage, but rather what your personal alcohol tolerance is with regards to erectile function. 

    “Everyone is different, so it can occur with a little alcohol in your system or when you’re falling down drunk,” says Kayla Lords, a sexpert for JackAndJillAdult.com. “Maybe you can get hard, but you can’t stay that way. Maybe the mind is willing, but the body won’t cooperate.”

    Some guys might drink relatively little and find themselves affected, while some might drink a lot and experience no impact on their erection. However, broadly speaking, whiskey dick is unlikely to occur unless you’ve consumed more than you normally do. That means you probably don’t need to worry about a single drink hampering your ability to get hard. 


    How to Handle Experiencing Whiskey Dick


    In the moment leading up to sex, it can be hard to know the proper response to whiskey dick. Of course, the fact that you’re most likely inebriated means that your normal decision-making skills might be impacted somewhat, but even struggling to maintain an erection while sober can be a seriously tricky process. Why?

    Well, that’s primarily due to how your nervous system interacts with your ability to achieve erection. The human nervous system is typically in one of two modes: the sympathetic nervous system, where you’re stressed out and ready to act at a moment’s notice in response to threats, and the parasympathetic nervous system, where you’re relaxed and able to enjoy yourself. 

    While alcohol consumption typically helps you stay in the parasympathetic realm, meaning yes to erections, if you drink so much that you start struggling to get or maintain one, you might get anxious and flip over to the sympathetic realm, meaning you’ll have an even more difficult time staying hard. 

    To Shaw, the answer is simple: “Apologize profusely and sleep it off.”

    “Once you’ve overdone it, there’s no way to get un-drunk,” he says. Going to sleep is a great way to fast-forward through that process, essentially — you could wake up in the morning and be ready to go. 

    Pleasing Your Partner While Experiencing Whiskey Dick

    However, if you or your partner aren’t willing to wait that long, there are other options on the table. 

    “Regardless of what you might think, dicks aren’t always required for sexual pleasure,” says Lords. “Penetration isn’t the only way to have sex, either. If you’re dealing with whiskey dick, focus on your partner’s pleasure using your hands, mouth, entire body, and even sex toys. Perform oral. Use their favorite vibrator or dildo. Touch their body.”

    That’s advice that resonated to Erik, 31, someone who had firsthand experience with whiskey dick: 

    “My first date with my now-girlfriend, I got a bit drunker than I was intending to, and between that and the anxiety when I couldn’t open the condom, I absolutely couldn’t get or stay hard. In order to keep the sexy mood going, I decided to just go down on her for an hour or so. She must have enjoyed it because the next morning she asked if I was free that night for round two — and we’ve been dating ever since. That’s not the storybook way you hope first-time sex will go, but it worked out pretty perfectly in the end. I think most guys seriously overestimate the importance of penetration when it comes to their partner’s pleasure.”

    If You Experience Whiskey Dick Often

    In a single instance, whiskey dick isn’t a huge deal. Whether you opt for non-penetrative sexual options or simply try to sleep it off, it doesn’t necessarily indicate that there’s anything wrong with you or that amount of alcohol you consume. 

    However, if you notice it happening repeatedly, that might be a cause for some concern. 

    “Repeated instances might warrant a trip to a urologist,” explains Shaw. “While the obvious solution is to drink less, there might be other factors at play. I see this often with guys who suffer from performance anxiety. A few drinks help reduce fear and trepidation before getting into the sack, but ultimately it might cause the very result he was afraid of.”

This altered state of perception allows you to engage sexually with objects that you might normally find off-putting – like feet,” O’Reilly explains. “The taboo element of this theory falls in line with dominant cultural messages about sex: it is naughty, dirty and shameful; a foot fetish may be one outlet through which we reconcile the conflict between our experience of sexual pleasure and negative sexual messages.”

    There Might Not Be a Specific Cause

    And lastly — all experts agree that having a foot fetish might just be part of who you are and part of what makes you tick, with no special reasoning behind it. After all, as O’Reilly points out, one of the most beloved children’s fairy tales revolves around an obsession with a single slipper that fits on the most perfect foot: Cinderella. “The foot has a long history of romantic/erotic associations. The Cinderella story refers to her perfect, small foot fitting into the glass slipper. Several cultures have histories of emphasizing foot size as a sign of feminine/masculine attraction,” she says.


    4. What Are Some Common Misconceptions About Foot Fetishes?


    Though it is the most common fetish, there are still some unjust misconceptions and stigmas around being attracted to that part of the body. But breaking through those stereotypes is important – that way more people will feel empowered to be exactly who they are and have the type of sexual experience they justly desire. As Singer notes, a person with a foot fetish isn’t classified as “perverted” – instead, it is that they have a preference like anyone else that happens to be less common than the traditional choices. “As with any fetish, it is tied to a trigger that sparks the libido, just like any other sort of ‘non-fetish’ sexual activity, like having your erogenous zones stimulated by your partner,” she says.

    Another myth that Michael points out is that a foot fetish is usually not temporary and isn’t something you outgrow: “As with most fetishes, once locked in the brain it becomes the stimulus for arousal,” she explains. Singer also adds that, especially with a fetish that is traditionally ingrained in your mind and body at a young age, a foot fetish is likely to stick with you for life. “People with sexual fetishes, including feet and shoes, often remember the fetish as beginning very early in their lives. In the case of the foot fetish, this can often be traced to an event or situation in which the seeing or touching of feet or shoes became paired with sexual arousal. Although there is very little consensus by psychologists and psychiatrists of the exact ‘wiring’ of this or any other sexual fetish, it is a powerful and often lifelong phenomenon,” she explains.


    5. How Do You Talk to Your Partner About Your Foot Fetish?


    If you are interested in someone for the long haul and potentially even marriage, it is essential that you are upfront about who you are – emotionally, personally, physically and yes, sexually. It might be incredibly difficult to bring up this conversation and maybe even more so with someone you have been with for a long time but you haven’t yet confided in. That is why it is important to be detailed, specific and honest. But take it slow and keep things simple, Singer advises.

    “In the case of men wanting to let their partner know that they are really into feet, it is best to tread gently at first on the topic. Many women are simply creeped out by the thought of someone kissing their feet or sucking their toes. One fun way to kick off the topic is to get the movie Kinky Boots, a hilarious 2005 British comedy which touches on the whole topic of sexualizing feet and footwear in a wildly entertaining manner,” Singer advises. “That can then lead to a lighthearted session of foreplay in which the man gives his partner a foot massage and then moves on to  some foot kissing and toe sucking. He will know pretty quickly what her reaction is to this and act accordingly.”

    O’Reilly also says that paying compliments and starting small with sexual acts is an easy way to start.

    “Compliment their feet! Offer a foot massage. Let them know that their feet are beautiful and exciting and that touching them makes you feel relaxed and aroused. And then tell them exactly what you want to do to their feet,” she suggests. “Even if they’re not into it and even if they’re a bit uncomfortable, a partner with whom you are sexually compatible won’t judge you. They’ll try to understand your needs and together you can negotiate ways in which to work your desires, if only in part, into your sexual repertoire.”

    That being said, you must be respectful of your partner’s boundaries and be willing to take it slow. It is going to be a learning process, especially if she’s never been with someone who shares your same fantasies. “If she enjoys you worshiping her feet, you are all set. If she is reluctant, you may need to take a gentler and more long term approach. If you have a very strong foot fetish, this is something that will need to be explored and negotiated early on in the relationship and it may just become the deal breaker.     Men spend an inordinate amount of time worrying about their penises. Whether it’s the size, the shape, or the presence or lack thereof of a foreskin, there hardly seems to be a single aspect of the penis that isn’t fretted over. 

    But for many people, whether that penis can get erect or not might be the most important one. 

    In a world where men associate their manhood with their ability to achieve erection — to the point where the word “manhood” can literally be used as slang for an erect penis — there’s the idea that there’s something wrong with a man who can’t get erect or has trouble staying there. 

    In many men’s minds, erections are supposed to be simple, lengthy and plentiful — and any deviation from that can feel like a massive failure. But that conception of erections skips out on some important facts — namely, that more than half of men will experience some form of erectile dysfunction (E.D.) at some point in their lives. 

    Considering those statistics, it’s a good idea for the people behind those penises to get educated about what E.D. is, where it comes from, and how to deal with it. AskMen spoke with doctors, psychologists and sexperts to help simplify the science behind getting hard.  


    What Is Erectile Dysfunction? Symptoms and Types of E.D.


    Erectile dysfunction, or E.D., is a problem with many causes and many solutions, but it manifests itself in one way: difficulty achieving an erect penis. 

    “Erectile dysfunction is when there is an erection that is insufficient for penetration or sexual activity,” says Dr. Koushik Shaw, MD of the Austin Urology Institute.

    However, it’s important to note that just because the issue manifests itself in a physical way, it doesn’t mean that the root of the problem is a medical one. While there are many different physiological causes for it, it’s common for E.D. to occur as a result of psychological factors, too. 

    “It’s often thought of as a physical issue, while many people (including doctors) overlook emotional factors that may be contributing (such as relationship concerns),” says relationship therapist and co-creator of Viva Wellness Jor-El Caraballo.

    More broadly, it’s worth considering whether E.D. is necessarily an issue at all. Outside of health concerns, sex educator Kenneth Play argues, it might be a good idea to shift the baseline and instead change our expectations — that it’s quite normal for penises to remain flaccid on occasion, even when we want to achieve an erection. 

    “It’s important to look at this holistically,” Play says. “It may not always be a disorder. Media and society think that men should just always be ready to have sex and be easily aroused, but it isn’t like just waving a steak in front of a dog.”

    “Sexual arousal, sexual pleasure and sexuality in general is more complicated than that, and for men, too,” he notes. “So sometimes, what’s perceived as a disorder like E.D. may actually be heavily influenced by a stereotype that men have to battle.”


    Who Experiences Erectile Dysfunction?


    There’s a stereotype that erectile dysfunction overwhelmingly or exclusively impacts older men. That’s far from the truth, however. 

    “Potentially anyone with a penis” can be impacted by E.D., says Kayla Lords, sexpert for JackAndJillAdult.com. “Stress, anxiety, depression and other mental health issues can cause E.D. — which impact men of all ages. Physical disability, which knows no age limit, can also cause E.D. So if you have a penis, you could, at some point, have to deal with E.D.”

    Beyond it just being possible at any age, it’s also, as Caraballo notes, common at many different ages. 

    “At some point in their lives, most men have experienced E.D.,” he says. “This can be due to a number of factors — including increasing age, pre-existing health issues, psychological concerns and the influence of substances. Research suggests that as many as 40% of men are affected at age 40, with those percentages increasing with age.”

    As well, it’s important to remember that men aren’t the only ones impacted by E.D. — non-binary people and trans people with penises can also struggle to achieve erections. 

    In short, if you’ve been having trouble getting or staying erect, you’re far from alone in the matter. 


    Physiological Causes of Erectile Dysfunction


    In order to properly understand what’s going on when you’re struggling to achieve an erection, you first need to understand what’s happening in your body when you succeed at achieving one. 

    Hormonal Environment: Testosterone, Estrogen and Erectile Dysfunction

    For starters, if you’ve heard that testosterone and erections are related, there’s definitely truth to that — but that’s not the only hormone you need. 

    In order to have an erection, says Shaw, “from a physiological standpoint, you need to have the appropriate hormonal environment — so you have to have enough testosterone, and you need to have some estrogen, but not too much.” 

    Vascular System: Blood Pressure, Diabetes and Erectile Dysfunction

    As well as the right hormonal balance, since erections are the result of blood filling up the spongy corpus callosum tissue in the penis until it’s hard, you also need to be able to pump blood without any significant issues. 

    In order to get erect, “You need to have a [healthy] vascular system — so blood flow, as well as intact nerves,” Shaw says. “That means you need to have appropriate cholesterol levels. High cholesterol can impact erectile function. Blood pressure has to be normal. If blood pressure is high, that can attack nerves and blood vessels. You need to have good blood-sugar levels, because diabetes can affect erectile function negatively.”

    “So hypertension, diabetes and cholesterol all negatively impact erectile function,” Shaw concludes — meaning your eating habits can have a massive impact on your sex life, if you’re eating foods that are high in sugar, salt or fat to the point of impacting your health. 

    Lifestyle Choices: Alcohol, Marijuana, Smoking and Erectile Dysfunction

    Poor sleep habits or difficulty sleeping such as sleep apnea, cigarette smoking and excessive consumption of drugs and alcohol can also have noticeable effects on your erections. If that sounds like your lifestyle — either currently or in the recent past — that might be what’s affecting your erection struggles, at least in part. 

    “What happens is it’ll accelerate aging of the body, including the nerves and blood vessels to the penis,” he says of living an unhealthy lifestyle. Often, he says, “You can party in your 20s and 30s, but beginning in your 40s, these things will tend to catch up with you, and the birds will come home to roost.”

    So in the short term, according to Shaw, you might get away with it — “but later, you’re going to pay for it.”

    Other Causes: Diseases, Injuries and Medications That Cause E.D. 

    There are lots of other medical issues that could impact your erectile function, too. Things like Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, sleep disorders, prostate issues, penile fractures or other scarring, pelvic or spinal injuries, and even the use of Adderall or other prescription medications can cause erectile dysfunction.  

    Because there are so many different potential physiological causes — and because many of them are quite serious — if you’re experiencing E.D., you should consult a doctor as soon as possible. 

    It might be embarrassing — or it might not seem serious — but E.D. could be an early warning signal for other health concerns, so getting checked out fast is crucial. 


    Psychological Causes of Erectile Dysfunction


    That being said, E.D. is often completely unrelated to physical health. 

    While the smart thing to do if you’re experiencing it is to speak to a licensed medical professional as soon as you notice the issue, it’s possible that the issue is completely psychological one — so it’s a good idea to examine your mental and emotional state, as well. 

    Long-Term Stress and Erectile Dysfunction

    “Psychological and relational problems are often completely overlooked as it relates to E.D.,” says Caraballo. People “fail to realize that a penis is not simply a dildo to be used for pleasure. It’s a body part attached to a greater whole, a living person, with feelings, anxieties and day-to-day concerns to contend with.”

    “Along with purely physical concerns,” he notes, “relationship problems, problems at work or school, low self-esteem and other mental health issues can be at the root of this problem.”

    Situational Anxiety and Erectile Dysfunction

    As well as more long-term issues like the above, in-the-moment nervousness can also produce erectile difficulties. 

    If you’re nervous about hooking up with a new partner, feeling more pressure to perform than usual, or simply beginning to doubt your sexual prowess, these feelings can have a serious impact on your erection. How? By triggering your sympathetic nervous system, rather than your parasympathetic one. 

    “The parasympathetic system, which is the hormonal system for relaxation, good times and things like that — you need that for the erection,” Shaw says. “However, if it’s a stressful environment, where you release the sympathetic system — which is the fight-or-flight component — you’re not going to have erectile function.”

    You might never have heard of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems before, but you’ve definitely experienced them. These two states help humans govern vastly different responses to different stimuli in their environments. 

    And it makes sense — your body needs to be able to react differently to, for instance, a tiger attacking you than it does when your lover starts to kiss you while sitting on the edge of the bed. The sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems ensure that the person being chased by a tiger is ready to run for their life, while the person getting kissed is able to relax and enjoy themselves. 

    However, if you’re feeling unexpectedly anxious in a sexual situation, your brain can read these signals as an indication to release the sympathetic nervous system — even if there aren’t any tigers present. 

    The Snowball Effect and Erectile Dysfunction

    People can “get caught up in this negative cycle of anxiety and stress with erectile function, which feeds on itself,” says Shaw. 

    As a result, if the stress of not performing in one situation carries over to a future situation, even a relatively small amount of pressure can quickly snowball into what feels like a lasting and chronic problem as you become less and less confident and more and more anxious.

    “There are guys whose wives are going through fertility issues, and the guy is basically a sperm donor, there to have sex on a regular basis, and the wife is agitated, up in arms, trying to have kids. I have guys who come to me, like, ‘I’ve never had erectile dysfunction, and now my wife wants me to have sex with her all the time, and I can’t get it up!’”


    How Can Erectile Dysfunction Impact You?


    Erectile dysfunction is a peculiar medical condition in that, in and of itself, it doesn’t impact any aspect of your life — except sexual function. 

    But because sex and libido are such important parts of so many people’s lives, and the ability to be a good lover is an important part of so many men’s self-conceptions and self-esteems, E.D. can have serious impact on your emotional well-being. It won’t in every case, of course — particularly if it’s a rare or one-time thing. But different people will react differently to the experience. 

    “It really depends on what a guy makes of it, and how his partner(s) responds,” says Dr. Jason Winters, founder and director of the West Coast Centre for Sex Therapy. “Most guys will occasionally struggle to get or maintain their erections — it’s pretty common.”

    “If a guy recognizes this and can brush off the experience, then he won’t likely be affected that much,” Winters notes. “On the other hand, if he experiences it as a devastating, humiliating blow to his ego, he’s likely to become anxious about his future performance. This can have a snowball effect, because his anxiety will create a self-fulfilling prophecy, in that it will lead to difficulties in functioning during subsequent experiences.”

    “Repeated experiences will just make things worse, and his confidence will erode,” he explains. “A partner who responds poorly, such as being critical or making it about them (i.e., perceiving it as being due to their lack of attractiveness), can also negatively impact a guy and leave him anxious about future experiences.”

    There’s a reason guys can get so worked up about this: they’re often taught from a young age that being a powerful, masculine lover is an important trait of being a man. 

    “Culturally, we view men with E.D. as less virile, and less worthy, which only adds stigma to a very normal experience,” says Caraballo. “Sexologist Dr. Chris Donaghue coined the term erectile disappointment, which is far less stigmatizing, yet accurate in addressing the issue.” 

    Whether it’s schoolyard jokes, portrayals of virile or effete men in pop culture, or explicit instructions about pleasing a partner, there’s often little room in our cultural consciousness for men who are simultaneously impressive and impotent. 

    “E.D. can lead to embarrassment, sexual shame and future performance anxiety,” Caraballo adds. “Men should realize that erectile disappointment is normal and doesn’t mean that they are broken. There a number of factors as to why it could be happening, but most importantly, men should not panic when this occurs. Consulting with a therapist and a doctor can very quickly help you get to the cause and potential resolutions.”


    How to Prevent, Address and Treat Erectile Dysfunction


    If you’re looking up E.D., chances are you’re already being impacted it — or you’re worried about the possibility. You probably want to know how best to prevent it from happening — whether it’s for the first time, the second time, or for the dozenth or hundredth time. 

    As Caraballo noted, it’s important not to panic. While struggling to achieve erection could indicate underlying health concerns, it might be a random occurrence more due to over-indulgence in drugs or alcohol, or a moment of situational anxiety, as opposed to a chronic issue. 

    “If it’s an occasional experience, then let it slide,” Winters advises. “It happens; erections will flat-line when conditions aren’t conducive to arousal. If you find yourself struggling and getting anxious, focus on what feels good, rather than performance — sexual pleasure leads to arousal, and arousal leads to erections.”

    To do that, Winters suggests you try to “create and tune into the sensory experiences that are going to turn you on (i.e., touch, and what you see, hear, smell, and/or taste).”

    “Getting stuck in your head is going to distract you from what would otherwise arouse you,” he notes. 

    And while you might find the experience (or experiences) deeply embarrassing, you should talk to your partner about them rather than trying to hide the issue or pretend nothing’s wrong, he says. 

    “Addressing the elephant in the room will help you both feel better about what’s happening, and will prevent your partner from taking blame,” Winters notes. If you continue to struggle with psychological issues that are causing E.D., he suggests visiting a professional, potentially a sex therapist. 

    “But make sure that it’s someone who has the credentials and expertise to be able to help you out,” he cautions. Doing a bit of background research first can go a long way towards solving the problem. 

    Erectile Dysfunction and Doctors

    Before you start looking up psychologists and sex therapists, you should first consult a medical doctor. 

    If the erection issues you’re experiencing are symptoms of a health issue, figuring out what that is exactly should be your first concern, since some causes of E.D. are linked with much more serious conditions than a flaccid penis. 

    So however important your sex life is to you, talking to your doctor about your E.D. could be an issue impacting your actual life. In other words, power through any concerns you have about making a doctor’s appointment and set some time aside in your schedule. 

    “Guys don’t go to the doctor on a regular basis, but when they have erectile issues, they come in,” Shaw says. “A lot of guys are embarrassed to come in and get checked out.”

    “There is scientific research and data that suggests that guys in their 30s and 40s who have early-onset erectile dysfunction have a higher risk of heart attack or stroke in the upcoming decade, because there are lurking factors,” he adds. “Way before you block a major coronary artery or your aorta or your carotid artery, the tiny blood vessels to the penis are going to get affected first. So the penis is like the canary in the coal mine.”

    So yes, that E.D.-inspired doctor visit could mean the difference between catching a potential health crisis with enough time to prevent it and falling victim to it. 

    “The right answer is to go visit the doctor and get evaluated,” Shaw says. “I always suggest going to a urologist or a primary care or internal medicine doctor for evaluation, because then you’re going to get the thorough, deep-dive check. Being checked by a medical professional is probably the best way to make sure that nothing is missed.”

    Erectile Dysfunction and Pills

    Shaws says that the prevailing culture might be to try to fix the problem with an easy pill-based solution, but a full check-up is necessary to make sure the doctor can figure out the root causes of your erection issues. 

    “All that stuff is, ‘go get a Viagra, go get a Cialis,’ which may work for a lot of people,” Shaw says. “But I will tell you, a guy may have an underlying factor, like low testosterone. They may have diabetes and don’t know it. They may have high cholesterol and don’t know it.”

    That being said, if your E.D. isn’t linked to more serious health concerns, modern medicine can help fix it — but you don’t need to break the bank to do so. Why? Paying top dollar for brand names just isn’t necessary now that there are generic versions on the market. You can get the same effect for a much lower price, and through a pharmacy, meaning you aren’t dealing with shady black-market ingredients. 

    “I would say to go with a mainline medication like sildenafil or tadalafil, which is the generic Viagra and Cialis,” Shaw says. “Don’t try to buy things off the Internet, because they may be laced with other agents. Go through a licensed reputable physician and pharmacy for your medical treatment.”


    Erectile Dysfunction and Sex


    If the issue isn’t immediately or easily resolvable, so long as you’re seeking treatment for it, you might wonder what to do in the interim. Can you have good sex if you have E.D.?

    The answer is a resounding yes — provided you’re willing to change your expectations somewhat. For starters, you’ll need to say goodbye to how you used to have sex — at least for a little bit. 

    “Rethink what sex means,” Lords advises. “If you only view ‘sex’ as penetration, you’re going to be disappointed in your post-E.D. sex life. But if you look at it as anything that feels good sexually — to you or to your partner — then you’ve opened up a range of options.”

    Can Porn or Masturbation Cause Erectile Dysfunction?

    If you’re a big consumer of internet porn, you don’t necessarily have to quit watching it. 

    While it’s true that studies have shown that porn consumption can impact sexual desire and function in some people — by watching porn to the point where they struggle to remain aroused without it — most E.D. issues are related to other factors. 

    If you’re able to achieve an erection while watching porn but struggle to without it, it might be a good idea to try to wean yourself off porn for a while in order to reset your relationship to it.

    How to Stimulate a Man with Erectile Dysfunction

    Regardless of your gender or sexual orientation, if it’s your partner who’s struggling with erection issues, you might be wondering how to touch them now, or whether it’s your fault. 

    Because E.D. is so often a physiological issue, there’s a good chance that it’s not you — particularly if you’ve been together a long time and there’s no first-time jitters. 

    That being said, changes in the relationship can impact what the sex is like, so it’s worth talking to your partner honestly to find out if there’s something making them stressed out in a way that might impact their arousal levels. 

    As for what you can do, well, the only limit is your imagination. 

    “We reduce men’s sexuality to equipment, function, and performance, and we think performance is literally only penetrative sex with a penis into a vagina,” says Play. “We should think more about the full picture here. Men have more erogenous zones than just their penis, which are often overlooked.”

    And if a guy is worried about not being able to pleasure a female partner without a throbbing erection, there’s lots to learn. 

    “Pleasure for women is often actually much more about touch and external stimulation of the clitoris,” Play says. “Pleasure and performance can have a much broader category. If you want some examples, think erotic massages, sexual touch, kink, prostates and nipples, and so much more.”

    Lords agrees, adding that couples can try oral sex performed on your partner, fingering or handjobs, and using sex toys. “For people with E.D., now might be a time to try anal play — prostate massage, butt plugs, rimming, pegging.”

    ​The National Association of Divorce Professionals (NADP) is launching the Certified Divorce Specialist (CDS) designation, a unique training program designed to teach professionals from all industries the fundamental elements of the divorce process throughout its various stages. The inaugural training session will take place on Oct. 19 and 20 at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

    The first of its kind, the CDS certification offers attendees the opportunity to become pioneers in their field by earning the first certification that focuses on a holistic, rather than industry-specific, approach to helping clients who are going through a divorce.

    “This is a certification for anyone whose work touches on the lives of divorcing families,” said Liz Becker, president and co-founder of the NADP, “not only family law attorneys and financial advisors, but also mental health professionals, realtors, mortgage brokers, and so many more. This program is open to anyone, but, ultimately, the families are the ones who will benefit the most.”

    The NADP’s goal with the CDS certification is to give professionals a competitive edge by equipping them with the expertise, knowledge, and skills necessary to better assist their divorcing clients. “These two information-packed days will change the way the attendees communicate with their divorcing clients,” noted Becker, who developed the CDS program and will also be leading the first training. “It will give them a wealth of knowledge to work more effectively with the right tools and resources.”

Lawyers and mediators and maybe even accountants all get involved to assess the division of assets, parenting time, etc. It’s an extremely painful, often lonngggg process that’s more akin to losing an actual person to death than it is to a break up. Likewise, there often can be an intense grief process wrapped up with divorce too. This is one of the reasons why it’s important to date someone who is actually already divorced. Men or women who are currently separated are likely going to be dealing with things you won’t want to be caught in the middle of.

    Regardless of their history, divorcees want to be loved, treated with kindness, and shown appreciation for. They don’t want to be smothered or with someone who is needy or demanding. They still may be getting back on their feet, so it’s important that you be understanding.

    1. Forget the future talk.
    Likely, your divorcee has no idea how to answer questions like, “Where is this going?” or, “What are we doing?” It’s amazing they’re dating. Give yourself time to enjoy the relationship as it develops and be in the present moment. Let the future talk come up when it’s supposed to instead of pushing to define the relationship too early.

    2. Give them space.
    A divorcee will be grateful if you give them some space. They may still be adjusting to being single or a single parent. They may need some time to figure some things out that have nothing to do with you, so don’t feel like you need to push anything. It’ll develop naturally if it’s going to.

    3. Don’t forget to have fun.
    Someone who has just gotten out of a bad marriage wants to have a good time, so be the one who can bring some fun into their lives. Show them trendy restaurants, suggest concerts or museums, or play a round of putt-putt. Everyone deals with divorce differently, and many divorcees are in a great place and want to celebrate being single and enjoy their time with you.

    4. Avoid playing games.
    People who have been married before aren’t necessarily as scared of commitment as someone who has never been married, so don’t feel like you need to be coy or vague. If you like them, tell them. If you want to call them back, call them back. Just watch that you aren’t texting every twenty seconds or talking about details of your future wedding before that’s clearly in the cards. You can be upfront, but don’t find yourself vaulting into needy.

    5. Focus on yourself.
    When you’re giving someone space and time and not jumping into something too serious yet, that also gives you your own time to work on you. Maybe you need to make a career change or spend more devoted time with your own children or pick up some healthy eating or exercise habits. A relationship with another person should be the joining of two complete people. If you’re lacking in some area, work on it so you can bring your best complete self to your next relationship, whether it’s with a divorcee or not.

    While the statistics on divorce have fallen, you’re still likely to meet plenty of divorcees in the dating pool, especially in the 30-50 year age range. If you don’t share their relationship experience, it’s all right. They are going to require a little more delicacy and balancing than you might be used to, but that’s all fine for you now. You can work on yourself as well and enjoy having fun while you’re at it. You also know they’ve committed before, and they will likely again, maybe even to you!
