  • Allergic Person Receives Menu For Upcoming In-Law Dinner Party, Takes It As An Insult

Allergic Person Receives Menu For Upcoming In-Law Dinner Party, Takes It As An Insult

    [ad_1]

Family get-togethers can be tricky, and sometimes, instead of bringing people together, dinner can only add to their disagreements.

A person under the nickname Ok_Employee_5876 made a post on Reddit, asking if it would be disrespectful to bring their own food and grill to their in-law’s BBQ party.

While this may sound excessive, they claim that the hosts knew about their allergies, but still devised a menu that was unsuitable, for them, so there are not many options left.

But they realized the hosts disregarded their food allergies

Usually, having an honest conversation with the hosts can really help navigate these situations

While the internet can sometimes be of help, the author of the post should first talk to their partner and consider what they believe to be the best approach.

“Families can have rather strange boundaries,” Dr. Ramani Durvasula, a psychologist who specializes in relationships, said. “When an in-law enters a new family situation, he or she inherits those boundaries and the problems associated with those boundaries, [which] can manifest in lots of ways.”

Expectations for how to manage things — such as holiday plans, child-rearing, visiting frequency, home presentation, and even work balance — can also contribute to disagreements because these unmet expectations, at either end, are a breeding ground for anger, frustration, sadness, and other messy emotions.

“Unmet expectations strain all relationships, but the stakes are high in in-law relationships because they are stakeholders in your marriage, and your children if you decide to have them, as well as your household and even issues like finances,” Dr. Durvasula added.

Being on the same page with your partner helps to bridge these gaps, especially on topics that are particularly contentious with your in-laws.

“A united front makes a huge difference,” Dr. Durvasula explained. “You do not want to be figuring things out on the fly with your spouse while in the crosshairs of your in-laws. If you and your spouse are on the same page, then you can take the path of least resistance with in-laws and just smile politely and say ‘sure,’ but then do things the way that you and your spouse believe [are] appropriate.”

Either way, Stefanie Grauer-Stojanovic, who is a German cookbook author, blogger, and nutritionist specializing in allergies and food intolerances, believes that your best option in such situations is honesty.

“After you have been invited, you should speak to the hosts as soon as possible,” she wrote. “It takes a bit of courage and honesty, along with tact. I know it’s not always easy, especially in business settings or at the beginning of new friendships. It can also be difficult when your children are invited to parties and you don’t really know the hosts at all.”

But if you speak to the hosts in person – by telephone rather than email – you can find out right away what their attitude is.

“I recommend initiating the conversation by thanking the host for the invitation and then ‘laying your cards on the table,’” Grauer-Stojanovic said. “Remain calm and use short, clear sentences to make sure you are easily understood. It might be the first time your host has had to deal with allergies, intolerances, or dietary restrictions.”

“It will not be necessary right away to go into more detail over the phone. You can always say more about it once you are there, whenever you feel like it, and if the guests and the hosts are interested.”

  • Outrage After Family Who Lost Their 4-Month-Old To Heatwave Raise $50k With GoFundMe

Outrage After Family Who Lost Their 4-Month-Old To Heatwave Raise $50k With GoFundMe

    [ad_1]

A four-month-old baby girl tragically lost her life after succumbing to a heat-related illness in Arizona, USA. The tragedy took place following a boating trip during scorching temperatures. Amid police investigations, the passing of the infant sparked outrage and heat protection awareness.

Trigger warning: infant death —  Four-month-old Tanna Rae Wroblewski suffered a heat-related illness while on a boat around 5:10 p.m. on Friday (July 5) during a weekend getaway with her parents, Matthew and Alyssa Wroblewski, on Lake Havasu, Arizona.

    Highlights

    • A four-month-old baby girl died from a heat-related illness following a boating trip in Arizona.
    • The family raised $48,630 on GoFundMe for funeral expenses amid allegations of parental negligence.
    • The temperature in Lake Havasu at the time of the incident was 118°F (nearly 48°C).

While details are limited, the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office informed local news Arizona’s Family that the baby girl was rushed to Havasu Regional Medical Center and then airlifted to Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

The infant’s family reportedly performed CPR on her until first responders arrived. Unfortunately, the sheriff’s office said that Tanna died a short time later, Arizona’s Family reported on Wednesday (July 10).

As per the Arizononian news outlet, records showed the temperature in the Lake Havasu area at that date and time was 118°F (nearly 48°C).

Detectives are reportedly now probing Tanna’s parents, as a public information officer, Anita Mortensen, told the New York Post on Thursday (July 11): “We are investigating the entire situation [including] what caused the death and what led to it.

“There have been no arrests at this time.”

Tanna’s official cause of death has not been released by the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office yet. The county has jurisdictional authority, as the baby died in Phoenix Children’s Hospital, which is located in Maricopa County.

Nevertheless, officials believe Tanna’s death is linked to the region’s heatwave.

Amid the ongoing investigation, Alyssa, who has not been charged in connection to her daughter’s death, posted a photograph of her late daughter on Facebook on Monday (July 8) with a caption saying it would have been the four-month anniversary of her birth.

Some observers subsequently called the grieving woman an “irresponsible and “bad mother,” as per The Post.

According to Alaska News Source, another person commented on Alyssa’s post prior to her Facebook page’s deactivation: “I just can’t imagine taking a four-month-old baby out in an extreme heat wave.

“Poor sweet little girl who needlessly suffered because of poor parental decisions.”

The Wroblewskis raised a total of $48,630 on a GoFundMe page they have set up for what appears to be funeral expenses.

“Tanna Rae Wroblewski, our real-life angel, became an angel in heaven,” the page read. “We are beyond devastated, heartbroken; there are just no words.”

Dangerous temperatures have risen across the US, leading to other unfortunate incidents similar to Tanna’s heartbreaking fate.

36-year-old Ashlee Stallings from North Carolina was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter after she allegedly left her eight-year-old daughter in a hot car while at work, prompting her death.

The child was transported to a hospital where she was pronounced dead, according to the arrest warrant affidavit from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, Kake ABC reported on July 3.

At the time, temperatures in Charlotte, North Carolina, where the incident happened, had reached 90+°F (over 32°C).

The recent aftermath of multiple heat-related deaths among children was discussed by Asheville Police Department, North Carolina’s Russel Crisp.

He told WLOS News 13 on Thursday: “Every year, [there are] children sometimes who die from being in a car that is too hot.

“Some news story about children left in hot cars every year seems like a trend that happens across the nation, not just locally.”

Records showed the temperature in the Lake Havasu area at that date and time was 118°F (nearly 48°C)

Sarah Monahan-Estes, a pediatric hospitalist at Mission Children’s Hospital in North Carolina, told the local broadcaster that she has been seeing this among young children more frequently.

“Heat stroke is actually the leading cause of non-crash vehicle-related death in children less than 15 years of age,” the doctor explained.

She added: “A child’s body actually heats up three to five times faster than an adult’s body temperature does and a child can have a heat stroke or die when their body temperature reaches 107 degrees Fahrenheit (approximately 42°C).”

The American Academy of Pediatrics (APP) suggests parents avoid taking babies outside for long periods of time if the heat index is greater than 90°F (32°C). Prolonged outdoor exposure on extremely hot days can cause babies to overheat quickly.

“Babies are not as effective at cooling their bodies as adults because they do not sweat normally,”  Sushmita Yallapragada, a neonatologist, told Children’s Health.

The medical expert further explained: “In addition, babies are not able to tell you if they are overheating and not feeling well.”

Image credits: yamasan/stock.adobe.com (Not the actual photo)

“Take breaks every 15-30 minutes or sooner based on your child’s response to the heat.”

According to the AAP, the ideal temperature for a baby’s room is between 68 and 72°F (20 to 22°C). Keeping a baby’s room cool is especially important when they sleep, as overheating can put an infant at risk for sudden infant death syndrome.

The following signs may indicate a baby is getting too hot: extreme fatigue or drowsiness, disinterest in feeding/drinking, flushed face, and sweatiness (may be more apparent in older children).

“People need to take their kids into account when making plans,” a reader commented

God Forced To Shave Head After Contracting Plague Of Lice

    [ad_1]

THE HEAVENS—Saying He had no choice but to target the painful, itching sensation directly at the source, God Almighty, Creator of the Universe, was reportedly forced to shave his head Thursday after contracting a biblical plague of lice. “Yesterday, a misdirected divine commandment resulted in all the dust of the heavens turning into lice and swarming through My celestial kingdom,” spake the Lord, adding that He had laundered His heavenly robes using the machine’s highest temperature setting and washed His flowing gray locks with lice shampoo but was still not rid of the blood-sucking insect plague He had brought down upon Himself. “So I’ve been forced to cut off the hair I’ve spent millennia growing out. And if this special nit comb I bought doesn’t work, I’ll have to shave My beard too. Then I’ll really look like an idiot. Or worse, a skinhead.” At press time, sources confirmed a clean-shaven God was looking in the mirror and trying to determine if He could pull off wearing a fedora.

Best Of All Time: 60 Cringey Moments That Got Featured On This Online Group

    [ad_1]

Seeing something cringeworthy is like watching a trainwreck. It’s uncomfortable and unpleasant, yet you can’t seem to take your eyes off of it.

If this forgettable mishap happened in the digital realm, it may have been broadcast in the Cringetopia subreddit. As the name suggests, it’s an online group that immortalizes people’s embarrassing situations.

We’ve collected some of the posts that stood out. These may amplify feelings of secondhand shame or induce a headshake of disappointment. Scroll through and see which resonates with you the most.

We cringe because of vicarious embarrassment (a.k.a. secondhand shame). But according to clinical psychologist Dr. Marielle Collins, there is an upside to it.

“That’s the concept of empathy,” she said in an interview with the Cleveland Clinic. “Our brains are wired to be able to simulate the emotional experiences of other people and feel what another person is feeling.”

Also of note: Not only was the game and western developer praised by the Japanese for being a great representation of the actual Island and culture, the developers were made honorary ambassadors for setting up a donation drive to repair the islands historical locations after a big storm damaged the island.

But there’s also a reason why seeing something cringeworthy feels like listening to fingernails running down a chalkboard. Here’s an explanation from Dr. Collins:

“A lot of times, these feelings can come with anxiety and a fear of negative social evaluation. Anxiety can be distressing and may get in the way of whatever you’re doing in the moment.”

Since secondhand embarrassment can be an anxiety trigger, Dr. Collins says it could be problematic if you’re already dealing with the disorder.

“Witnessing someone else experiencing embarrassment could increase anxious thoughts about whether a similar experience could happen to you and activate your body’s stress response.”

If vicarious embarrassment puts you on edge, Dr. Collins shared some tips on how to handle it properly. It begins with reframing emotions.

“When we experience emotions that are uncomfortable, we often think they are ‘bad,’ and that makes us even more anxious as we try to get rid of it, increasing distress,” she explained.

“It can help to have a more mindful approach by acknowledging how we are feeling in the moment without judgment and allowing the emotion to pass.”

Dealing with anxiety is primarily about recognizing when it begins to manifest. This also applies to the distress from feeling secondhand shame. For this, Dr. Collins recommends the STOP technique.

This simple method involves four steps: stop what you’re doing, take a breath, observe what’s happening to your body, and proceed mindfully.

As Dr. Collins explains, the STOP technique makes you effectively take notice when anxiety and self-judgment from secondhand embarrassment begin to creep in.

“When we go down a rabbit hole with our thoughts and emotions, it can all end up being amplified. This STOP technique helps you move in a more helpful direction by pausing for a minute to stop whatever stream of thought you’re having.”

However, some people don’t feel secondhand shame. But does that mean they lack empathy? Psychotherapist James Hartley has an answer to this question.

“It could be that they are on the other end of the spectrum genetically, or their environment didn’t develop their empathy in childhood much, but it could also be that they have learned how to have boundaries with their sense of self,” Hartley told Refinery29.

    Classic WTF: Cluster#$%&

    [ad_1]

Reliability is its own, very important art. Unless you're, say, Google, you shouldn't write your own reliability systems, but instead buy solutions from a vendor. Just not this vendor. Original. —Remy

It was a little past 4AM when Massimo's support pager went off, jarring him awake. Without even looking at the pager or logging into his laptop, he flipped on the television to Channel 242: the Video on Demand channel for the Italian TV broadcaster that he worked for.

    Nothing.

Grumbling as he got dressed, Massimo knew that, again, now for the third time this month, he was going to have to go into work freakishly early to fix the VoD service.

The server software that was behind the station's Video on Demand service was a curious creature. One of the features that the software package boasted was the Redundancy Manager, a system that could "cluster" the software responsible for managing the conditional access system to the Video On Demand programs. Essentially, if one application server went down, then a back-up server running in stand-by mode would kick in.

Rather than take advantage of fancy-schmancy Windows functionality, the developers of the Redundancy Manager chose to take their own, custom approach.

Under "normal" circumstances where one server would go down, the other one in the station's cluster of …um…two servers… would pick up where the other left off. More often than not, however, a situation would arise where one server would lose its connection to its other half of the cluster for only a minute. Of course, to the Redundancy Manager, its mate was dead as a doorknob.

With neither systems being aware of the other, they would start fighting for hardware resources which were meant to be accessed by only one server. They would collide, give up due to various errors, then they would try and fail again, stuck in an infinite loop because they had no way of handling such situations. The main server that ran the Redundancy Manger would sit idly by since the mighty "clustering" application only started and stopped the servers on demand.

Time after time, Massimo would be called on the carpet by management because of his alleged inability to administer the servers. He tried to explain the design flaws were not because of him, but the software they purchased that ran on the ugly cluster of servers. Also, he had to explain slowly and carefully every time that even though they had spent the equivalent of more than $100,000 USD for the license, the vendor wasn't going to re-design their software at a customer's request.

Right around 4:45am, Massimo pulled into the TV station's parking lot and was in the server room by 5am. Sleepily, he walked up to the network hub and unplugged the network cable on one server to stop the bleeding. Next, Massimo logged into the master server, one by one, brought down all the applications on the connected server and brought them back up again. After rebooting the final part of the cluster, Massimo clicked "OK" to restore its connection with the Redundancy Manager and wondered what time IT recruiters got into their offices.
