Introducing the Gauntlet: Quick-Start Guide
Now available to all owners of Age of Mythology: Retold, the Gauntlet is currently a “BETA”, and therefore, may still be subject to some additional changes or balancing.
Enter a new Arena of the Gods experience and play the new Gauntlet in Solo or Co-op Mode! This new mode is available alongside the existing Story Mode and brings some new twists that will provide a unique experience every time you play!
Run the Labyrinth
Progress through the labyrinth, unlock new missions and carve out your own path.
The core of the Gauntlet is called your Run – it’s your path (with 3 lives) to victory. Make your way through 9 nodes of the Labyrinth to get to the Boss Battle and win your Run! However, if you lose 3 battles, you are defeated and sent back to the beginning with no Blessings.
Count Your Blessings
Players can select and change from their equipped blessings in the lobby screen.
In the Gauntlet, there are two types of Blessings.
A Blessing is a special boost to stats, speed, or a special unit, and you can unlock and accumulate more Blessings as you win each match. Choose Blessings at the beginning of a node to help you win the match, but note they are only available during your run and will disappear as soon as you start a new path through the labyrinth.
Eternal Blessings are a bit different. Eternal Blessings can be unlocked in Arena of the Gods Story Mode. Eternal Blessings are also acquired after completing the Boss Node and will be yours to add to your pool of choices for all subsequent runs.
When starting a new gauntlet run, players will be able to use a “Starter Blessing” from the pool of blessings they have unlocked in Story Mode.
Choose Your Legend
Players can select and look up information on any of the Legends they have unlocked.
From the beginning of the match, choose a Legend to help you along the way. These Legends are powerful Heroes that unlock as you complete each run through the labyrinth! As a bonus, after Legends are unlocked they are available for all future play-throughs! All players will start with Kastor from the Arena of the Gods Story Mode.
Mix It Up With Events
The event timers and event history as it appears in a new tab on the “Game Summary” popup.
During each Gauntlet mission, three types of events will periodically occur: Player Blessing, Enemy Blessing, and Chaos-type events.
Player Blessing events will periodically award you with a gift of resources from the Gods or a Blessing to use until the mission ends.
Enemy Blessing events will periodically make all enemies stronger by empowering them with a Blessing until the mission ends.
Chaos-type events periodically bring the wrath of the Gods down on all players.
The frequency of these events and what they can do changes depending on the difficulty you have chosen for your Gauntlet Run.
The HUD event timers, as they appear on the default layout when using keyboard and mouse.
View the time until the events occur by looking at the timers near the Minimap and the history of events in the Game Summary UI.
Favor Stash
The “Favor Stash” popup. Now accessible in-game from the Market.
Your Favor Stash accumulates a wealth of currency to be used as you wish in the Gauntlet. You can save your wealth to purchase new items, cash it out as usable Favor, or save it up for the more difficult matches. But be careful – you are limited on the amount you can use during each match!
If you prefer, you can also choose to use your Favor Stash currency in some other Single-player content, such as the regular Skirmish mode!
Level Up Your Game
The victory screen, showing XP rewards and progression to next level.
Each node you win during a Gauntlet Run will earn you XP and Favor Stash currency. As you level up from earning XP, you can unlock new options for usable items in the Favor Stash. (Currently the last item becomes available after reaching level 45). More XP is awarded for playing on higher difficulties and if you are close to the Boss Battle node.
As you progress up to the maximum level of 99, you will continue to increase the maximum Favor you can hold on to and increase how much you can use during each mission.
Progression and Prestige
The updated version of the profile screen shows off a player’s showcased badges.
Highlight your favourite heroic deeds in your profile with your hard-won badges! Show off your efforts on the Leaderboards with the number of runs you have completed on different difficulties, the number of nodes completed, and your best Run time.
The player can use the “Badge Picker” popup to select badge/titles for their showcase and look at the unlock requirements of badges they still haven’t achieved.
We look forward to seeing what players think of this new mode!

Just Cause developers Avalanche Studios are cutting staff and closing their Liverpool, UK-based studio following Microsoft’s cancellation of co-op smuggling game Contraband.
Avalanche announced Contraband back in June 2021 in the form of a trailer replete with lockboxes, scribbly heist maps and Steely Dan music. There followed several years of almost complete silence, broken by news that over 500 Swedish staff had formed a union in April 2024 – part of a wave of games industry labour activism in the face of widespread, “post-Covid” job-chopping.
Back then, Avalanche commented that “active development has now stopped while we evaluate the project’s future”. There’s been some disagreement between Microsoft and reporters over whether the game is fully dead, or merely “on hold”. I imagine it’ll be on hold for a while, if they aren’t any developers to work on it.
Avalanche’s statement about this week’s reductions alludes to “current challenges to our business and the industry”, but doesn’t mention Contraband. The company propose to close their Liverpool studio, with a collective consultation process as required by UK law. “The changes will also impact our other studio locations in Malmő and Stockholm,” the statement continues, “where we will reduce our workforce and restructure the teams to address our games’ needs.”

Defeating AXL opens up a whole new frontier of power. You can forge an imposing tarantula armor set, wield the devastating Tarantula Bow and Spear, and even decorate your base with spidery flair. From larger-capacity chests to flickering candles to the kind of throne Yoked Girth would envy, you’ll have plenty of eight-legged style to show off.
This update also makes it easier than ever to turn your park empire into an architectural masterpiece. The streamlined BUILD.M grid system is here to make placing, snapping, and perfecting your creations more intuitive, giving your wildest blueprints a chance to shine.
Meanwhile, your Buggy is getting a serious quality-of-life glow-up: with both PEEP.R and Hot Pouch integrated, you can scan, swap, and stock up without ever leaving the driver’s seat. Pair that with a hauntingly stylish new Praying Mantis armor set, complete with plague doctor vibes and some nifty healing tricks, and you’ve got more ways than ever to customize your playstyle.
Not only that, but we are excited to announce Japanese and Brazilian localization have been added to Grounded 2 with this update. More languages will be added throughout development, so keep your eyes on our socials and the road map for future announcements!

Rumi, Mira and Zoey — the KPop Demon Hunters trio better known as HUNTR/X — will all land in Fortnite this week on October 2, and star in Demon Rush, a special version of the game’s fan-favorite Horde Rush mode.
In Demon Rush, you’ll work together with your party and the HUNTR/X trio to survive against waves of demons — a change from previous incarnations of Horde Rush. You’ll also, of course, be able to pick up Rumi (and Mira and Zoey!) in the Fortnite Shop.
KPop Demon Hunters’ Rumi arrives in Fortnite.
While Horde Rush typically goes live during Fortnitemares, the game’s annual Halloween celebration, Fortnite’s big new KPop Demon Hunters collaboration will arrive beforehand as a separate offering, in less than 48 hours’ time.
Indeed, Demon Rush is already visible within Fortnite itself if you head to the game’s Discover tile — which also shows a countdown for the mode officially going live.
For the uninitated, Rumi is the main vocalist and leader of HUNTR/X, and the last of the three KPop Demon Hunters stars to have their Fortnite outfit revealed this week, as the trio’s in-game arrival nears. Fans have reacted positively to the characters’ appearance in Fortnite, and KPop Demon Hunters star Rei Ami, who provides Zoey’s singing voice, has even shared her excitement for her character’s design.
Released this summer to enormous success, KPop Demon Hunters has smashed Netflix records to become the streaming service’s most watched title ever, with more than 325 million views. A special sing-along version of the film is also now available, and Netflix is already preparing to capitalize on the film’s success with plans for a live-action remake, a stage musical and sequels.

Developer SMG Studio shares insights on the minigame development process for their new release, LEGO Party!
Learn about some of their favorite minigames: Bungee Boogie, Museum Mayhem, Rumble Rally and Bricknado.
LEGO Party!is stacked with 60 delightful minigames! Play today!
For LEGO Party! we developed over 250 prototypes and conducted over 150 external playtests to get to our final 60 minigames. There’s not one “type” of party game player so we needed to craft minigames that could be played by all ages and all skill levels. We also wanted to ensure there was enough mechanical depth for many of the minigames to allow more experienced players to compete at a higher level.
In this article we’ll give some insight into our design process by picking a few of our favorite minigames and show some of the process behind their development. But trying to pick our “favorite” minigames from the 60 was never going to be easy.
We hope this also gives some insight into what goes into making a LEGO game and what’s involved in working with external LEGO builders or AFOLS (Adult Fans Of LEGO) as they are affectionately referred to. SMG Studio collaborated with several AFOLS from the wider community in Australia and overseas. Some who had worked professionally building before but others this was just their side passion.
One unifying element across all minigames was simple controls. With all 60 minigames sharing just 3 simple control schemes: analogue stick only, analogue stick and one button, or just one to four buttons.
This allows players, even those with less familiarity using a controller, to pick up and play easily and compete. A bonus of “one analogue stick only” means that many of our minigames can be played one handed, perfect for eating pizza and playing at the same time.
It also gave us as game designers strict rules to work with that help refine the design process — sometimes in game design more rules are better.
So, here’s a few of the 60 minigames you can expect in LEGO Party! when it’s released on September 30.
Bungee Boogie
We experimented early on with grapple as a core mechanic (because grappling is S tier) and ended up with three minigames using it. To be honest we could have made 60 grappling minigames but that might have been overkill.
The objective is simple, dance on the platform to earn points, ‘king of the hill’ style. Other players must grapple and swing their way to knock the other players off.
Theming wise, the basic nature of the game itself left this wide open. Concepts for this ranged from a Jack and Beanstalk fantasy to a circus tent carnival vibe. But once we saw the sketch of a DJ in a floating booth, we knew that was the direction to go.
The theme allowed us to make a game with some phat beats (each minigame has a unique soundtrack and this one pumps) and get a ‘caveman loves clubbing’ joke in there. Never let SMG Studio get in the way of a good pun.
Museum Mayhem
This is a deceptively simple minigame in which you protect your giant vase from being broken by other players.
Even when a player is “eliminated” they are still able to continue in the game and be an active participant. It was an important design decision to try and design games that kept all players engaged even if they lose. While we couldn’t do that for every minigame this is one of the best examples of how that design philosophy comes into play.
It’s also very satisfying running through the broken vase bricks and replicating that tactile experience is something we wanted to convey when we could.
It’s fun having a humorous diegetic “healthbar” for players to protect. There’s a lot of near misses that invoke that feeling of playing with a ball inside your house and almost breaking something valuable.
The overall museum theming of this minigame came together quickly and it was a joy to watch the LEGO builders build out the scene and hide a lot of arty easter eggs in the level.
The giant world globe that falls into the arena for players to push around originally started as a giant hockey puck with the players in hamster balls. You hear the term SNOT (Studs Not on Top) a lot when working with professional LEGO builders. This refers to when a build has studs that are not just on top but on the sides or the bottom. The globe featured in the game is a classic SNOT build with the added complexity of trying to have continents on it.
Here’s a quick overview (skipping the dozens of steps between these) going from prototype to sketch, and then final 3D blockout to LEGO build.
Rumble Rally
When we started brainstorming, we knew we wanted a classic ‘80s arcade style racer. Rumble Rally does just that with players racing around the track for 3 laps.
By ditching the accelerator and brake buttons and going just pure steering left and right, we’re able to distill the game down to its purest form. In playtesting most people kept the accelerator button down the whole time and that can be tiring.
One important factor when working with LEGO bricks is what scale you are working with. With LEGO Party!, we had complete freedom for every minigame to change the scale to fit the game best. Building to “minifigure scale” (which means all the builds are scales to match a standard minifigure) can sometimes result in build scales that are too big to fit on one screen (which we soon realised after designing a few vehicles for this minigame).
Even at minifigure scale there’s still decisions made about how wide the car should be. The scale is based on how many “studs” wide it should be built. Is it 11, 13, 14 or 16 studs wide? Even a seemingly small decision like that affects the entire build of the track as we can’t simply “scale” a car to fit what we’ve built later or scale the track itself. We learned a lot making LEGO Party! on how to properly plan and work with LEGO builders.
So, for this minigame we decided earlier on to work at microscale to allow us to get everything on one screen and make the track feel “bigger” by basically shrinking down the players. The challenge then becomes giving each car a distinct look at that scale. I think the builder team nailed this.
Surprisingly the theming and even level design for this minigame changed very little from the initial concept seen below. We wanted it to be a LEGO City Stuntz meets Apocalypseburg! There’s a few versions of the track with blades and traps but we realised the fun was in drifting around the track and finding the racing line.
One big reason why this is a favourite of ours is, if given enough time, this minigame could turn into a fully self-contained game unto itself with multiple tracks, different vehicles, ‘upgrades’ and more.
Bricknado
For a change of pace for players we also created minigames like Bricknado. This minigame focuses on the LEGO brick itself. We also wanted minigames that people could participate in even if they didn’t have a controller in hand. We’ve seen in playtesting with 4 kids where the parents watching from the sidelines will also be competing along with the kids even without a controller in hand.
Bricknado is a guessing game. A swirling array of bricks slowly appears and players must guess which object it creates. Scoring is based on if you guess correctly and the speed so there’s a risk vs reward of guessing too early to maximise your points.
This was also a fun brief for the LEGO builders to come up with a series of builds that are all the same theming but different under a very strict brick count limit and size restrictions. Most coming in ~25 bricks. Which is where the beauty of the LEGO brick comes into its own: you can create these amazing creatures with so few bricks. One personal regret now is that we didn’t use this as an excuse to get LEGO Mixels into the game!
The individual bricks in the Bricknado are categorised into tiers based on how unique they are to the build. So as time goes on the higher tier bricks are introduced to make the guessing easier.
Here’s a few of the builds you see in Bricknado. We designed over 110 little builds to give a lot of replayability in this minigame.
We have a handful of guessing/thinking minigames in LEGO Party! and it’s been important for us to understand that the variety of styles of play is what makes party games interesting for all players.
That’s just a small sample of the 60 minigames on offer in LEGO Party! We’re curious what you’ll find as your favorites, and can’t wait for everyone to enjoy all the hard work that went into crafting this game. For more info check out the official website.

Saudi Arabia’s government continues to grow its gaming and esports portfolio
The pending $55 billion acquisition of game-publishing giant EA by a consortium of investors, most notably Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), sent shockwaves through the industry. It is the second-biggest acquisition in the history of the games industry, and it is only the Saudi Arabian government’s latest move in the video gaming space.
Over the past several years, the PIF and its subsidiary Savvy Games Group have invested in or acquired gaming companies from different parts of the world, holding stakes in some of the leading publishers in the industry. The Saudi Arabian government has long been accused of human rights violations, and its investments in entertainment, tech, and sports have invited scrutiny. Below are the major gaming companies that Saudi Arabia owns or has a stake in.

When first-party video game controllers finally cut the cord to embrace their wireless future in the PS3/Xbox 360 era, Sony chose the path of built-in rechargeable lithium batteries over Xbox’s AA-battery solution. While rechargeable battery kits would become available for 360 controllers and beyond, Sony stuck to its built-in solution. It looks like that may be changing soon, however, if some leaks are to be believed.
According to Polish-language site PPE, credentialed leaker Graczdari has spilled the beans on an upcoming update to the DualSense controllers Sony plans to ship with a new, more energy-efficient PS5 Pro that seems to be on the horizon. Grains of salt and all, this same leaker accurately called Flight Simulator’s arrival on Sony hardware and the physical release of Oblivion Remastered.
What kinds of batteries will this thing take?
According to the leak, this revised DualSense controller is referred to internally as “V3.” What isn’t as clear is whether or not you’ll be able to shove some Duracells in here and call it a day. Our comrades over at VGC don’t seem to think so, as the language in the original report seems to suggest the batteries might be a separate product category of their own, perhaps not too dissimilar from Xbox’s rechargeable battery solution.
PlayStation controller battery life has been a bit of a rollercoaster over the years. Veterans of the PS3 era will likely remember the DualShock 3 as being quite generous when it came to playtime. The DualShock 4, however? That battery would evaporate faster than water on Mars. The DualSense hasn’t been much of an improvement, especially with its more sophisticated rumble feature and triggers. Hopefully V3 of this otherwise very comfy controller will lengthen your time spent cordless.

The leaves are turning orange and brown. Pumpkins and scarecrows are appearing on porches all around your town. It’s fall, the best season of the year. And as with every seasonal shift, fall brings with it a big ol’ limited-time Steam sale featuring hundreds and hundreds of discounted PC games.
On September 29,Valve kicked off the big Steam Fall Sale. There is precisely a metric shit-ton of games on sale on Steam from now through October 6, so you have a week to dig through everything and hopefully find a good deal on big games likeCyberpunk 2077, Doom Eternal, Diablo IV, and many, many more. To help you out, I’ve dug around for a bit and pulled out some of the biggest and best deals currently available on Steam.
Also, as a heads up: The LCD Steam Deck is currently 20 percent off on Steam, too. If you’ve been wanting to jump into PC gaming, this is a great way to do that, and many of the games listed below will run great on a Steam Deck.
Anyway, here’s my list of highlights, arranged alphabetically. And yay, the comments are back, so we can all help each other find good deals. If you spot anything not on this list that you think is worth buying or checking out that’s on sale right now, leave it in the comments below.
Diablo 4 players have proven once again that if there is a way to deal so much damage the game can’t calculate it anymore, someone will find it. This season the award goes to a druid player who figured out a combination of items that stacks their poison damage into infinity.
That player was YouTuber BigPapaPlump, who effortlessly cleared the single hardest dungeon in the game. While other classes were scrounging the best items together to survive dungeons 20 levels lower, druid players using their build skated through the tier Blizzard designed to be impossible.
The fun is now over. Blizzard has temporarily disabled the key to the infinite damage build until further notice.
You can watch BigPapaPlump spend 23 minutes explaining the particulars on how the build worked, but the gist is that it involved spamming a skill that infects enemies with poison over and over until the numbers weren’t numbers anymore.
Damage over time skills in Diablo 4 have always gotten funky when you have a way to “pop” them for one massive hit. Something about the conversion from damage over time into a single attack tends to go wrong. And that’s exactly what was happening here: BigPapaPlump spammed their Poison Creeper skill using the now-disabled Legendary power to dump enough poison damage onto enemies to melt them in seconds.
The reward for completing the hardest dungeon isn’t any different from completing lower tiers, so bragging rights and a temporary spot on the unofficial leaderboards is all BigPapaPlump got for the accomplishment. In their video explaining the build—which came out a few hours before Blizzard took action—they talk about anticipating the nerf and how they’ll transition into a version that doesn’t break any rules. “Will this get patched?” BigPapaPlump asked. “Yes it will.”
Ideally, infinite damage exploits wouldn’t be a thing at all in a game like Diablo 4, where the whole point for some players is to measure how strong their builds perform against the toughest monsters you can find. Trivializing the grind kind of defeats the whole point, but it’s kind of funny that the class that has spent the last several seasons at the bottom of the power rankings got a taste of glory.
Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.
At least Blizzard was quick with a fix, but I hope it has bigger plans to prevent this from happening in the first place, especially when official leaderboards finally arrive. Nobody is going to want to compete if some players are running around with god mode on.
Resident Evil has been one of the video game industry’s quintessential, flagship horror games for years now, delivering everything over the years from unsettling, atmospheric haunting to outright jumpscares. But as its development team continues to search for new ways to freak people out, a few of its leaders are admitting that they’re not always 100% certain what elements of Resident Evil are actually scary anymore.
This comes from our interview with director Koshi Nakanishi and producer Masato Kumazama at Tokyo Game Show 2025. We started by talking about Resident Evil: Requiem’s new protagonist, Grace, and her differences from the more action-oriented Leon S. Kennedy. That led to a discussion of why the series was pulling back on the heavy action elements in Requiem, as Nakanishi explains:
I think you can broadly classify Resident Evil titles on a scale of how much they’re like Resident Evil 2 or Resident Evil 4. Resident Evil 7 was definitely on the 2 side of that, as it returned to survival horror roots and was very acclaimed for that. Resident Evil Village built on that and added in more action and gunplay and brought it toard the RE4 side of that particular scale. But if we kept going in that direction there’s almost an inflation effect, where you have to keep adding more and more action to outdo the previous title, and by doing that you ultimately end up where Resident Evil 5 and 6 went, and although they’re still great games, the general consensus is that they pushed Resident Evil so far in the action direction that it was no longer horror. I didn’t want to have to do that with Resident Evil’s ninth title where I just tried to outdo the action in Village and ended up making something I didn’t want to make. Firmly swinging the scale toward the Resident Evil 2 style was our intention, and it’s almost an upgrade of that Resident 2 style.
But that led to a follow-up question where I asked Nakanishi about the other side of the coin, of trying to outdo their own scares with each new title. Nakanishi noted that their goal isn’t necessarily to innovate horror, but there is a certain numbing effect that working on these games for so long has, where they really need to see audience reactions to know if what they’ve made is actually scary or not.
“We’ve made so many of these that we can’t tell anymore until someone else plays it,” Nakanishi says. “There was actually a bit of a worry internally before we showed the [Resident Evil: Requiem] hands-off at SGF and the first hands-on at Gamescom, was this actually scary? Because we don’t even know anymore. This is our bread and better, what we make every day.”
I ended up asking Nakanishi if there was anything they had cut from the game for being too scary. He couldn’t recall anything specific that was actually removed from the game after it had been added, but he did remember one anecdote that might make fans of Ethan Winters chuckle:
“We didn’t really implement it, so it wasn’t cut, but- we don’t know if something’s scary. So we say, we’ll do this, we’ll do that, we keep adding on stuff, and at one point we were like, what if [Grace] gets a big gash in her leg, or her leg gets cut off, because that thing attacks her, and oh my god it’s so scary, but we talked ourselves down a little bit.”
So at least we know Grace probably isn’t going to have the same issues Ethan did with hands. Probably.

Your cuddly dinosaur aunties at Capcom have warned that they can’t “guarantee” various Monster Hunter games will run on Windows 10 PCs after uncle Microsoft end support for the operating system on October 14th this year.
When that fateful day comes to pass, Capcom “will no longer guarantee that Monster Hunter: World, Monster Hunter Rise and Monster Hunter Wilds will run on Windows 10 systems.” Which isn’t to say that these games will immediately become unplayable, but “future system updates or game title updates may make the game incompatible on Windows 10 systems”.
