We are currently tracking more than 30 games for the launch window through March*, including titles from popular IP like Horizon Call of the Mountain, No Man’s Sky, and Resident Evil Village. A free PS VR2 update for Gran Turismo 7 is also on track for launch day. A quick update from Polyphony:

GT7 in VR takes full advantage of PS VR2’s next gen features. With eye tracking and foveated rendering, players will experience stunning visual fidelity while racing in any of the 450+ cars. • EA’s golf game returns with more courses, more customization, and more shots

EA’s golf game returns with more courses, more customization, and more shots

    [ad_1]

It only seems like the biggest features in EA Sports PGA Tour, which launches March 24, are the ones that fans already played and enjoyed a decade ago. Augusta National Golf Course and all four of the men’s major championships are in; even things like boosted drives with “big-hit moment” camera changes are making a return.

But focusing only on the return of the Masters Tournament, or the visual fidelity with which Augusta National and other courses are presented, would sell short what I saw in a presentation last week. Namely, a career mode that is even more RPG-like than before, offers more ways to customize and mold your created golfer’s playing style, and looks like it will swallow just as many of my evenings as the old Tiger Woods games did.

EA Sports PGA Tour looks like a game where, even though there will be more real-life professionals on the roster than ever, the developers understand that the users themselves are the real stars of the show.

“Even when we had Tiger, over 97% of people play as a created player,” producer Ben Ramsour told Polygon in an interview after the presentation. “So we know that’s a core motivation. However, we’ve done a lot to build these relationships with these pros, and we want to tell their stories in the game.”

Granted, I couldn’t pull much from a single glimpse of the detailed golfer progression screen we were shown. But players will rank up 10 different skills (each with 10 ranks) as they acquire skill points with each level. Lead producer David Baker even intimated that at advanced levels, players will be able to unlock packages of traits that will make their golfer’s abilities resemble the playing styles of the PGA’s and LPGA’s biggest stars.

EA Sports PGA Tour producer Ben Ramsour on Course Fit: “It’s further agency between you and your character on the course — that’s the primary motivation behind that information.”
    Photo: Electronic Arts

All of this leans into new gameplay that continues to offer broad-based shot-shaping features and differentiates them even more with 20 shot types, some of which are unlocked in the later stages of attribute progression. Those shot types may also be ranked up, it seems.

“I think a big thing is experimentation,” Ramsour said, noting that players can again create multiple avatars and progress them individually. He also said, “We want users to see, Hey, Tony Finau’s game really matches well to Augusta, but it’s terrible for Harbour Town.”

This is surfaced through a nifty little menu that I saw called Course Fit, which stole the show as far as something new that will connect me more to my created golfer. Course Fit, seen on the course selection screen, gives players a relative view of their skills versus what the course will expect of a winning player. Five attributes — Power, Driving, Approach, Short Game, and Putting — all have bars; the closer a player’s bar is to the course’s, the more they’ll be able to take advantage of that characteristic.

It’s not an attribute boost; it’s just visual information that will give me a sense of just how risky my ideas are on the second shot of, say, one of East Lake Golf Club’s par-5 holes, or how important it’s going to be to stick this approach at Pebble Beach, where there’s a demanding putting game waiting for me.

Publicity headshot of David Baker, lead producer of EA Sports PGA Tour, dated 2023

Lead producer David Baker said the new Challenges mode is “for bite-sized gameplay moments and to replicate the experience of pros between career events.”
    Photo: Electronic Arts

“So for me, I want to win the major championships,” Ramsour said. “So in my primary created player, I am leveling up the shot types to win the four majors. But eventually, I’m going to want to win every single tournament on the hardest mode. So I know I’m going to have to be less of a bomber and more precise to win at Harbour Town.”

Although players may have multiple created golfers, most stick with one for Career. They will most likely see all of the differences Ramsour mentioned in Challenges, a separate mode, but one that has a supplementary effect to Career.

Challenges, to me, resembled the kind of bite-sized moments available in Madden Ultimate Team’s single-player offering. Indeed, they’ll be live-service content, driven by real-world occurrences, and like MUT, they’ll use different players in addition to the created pro. Baker said that the challenges are designed to play like between-rounds practices, meaning they’ll be shorter experiences focused on a particular skill or a particular moment.

The rewards will be skill points for use in created-player progression, as well as clubs and cosmetic items they can equip. (Importantly, these clubs, equipment, and apparel do not affect player attributes, as they may have in the past.) Golfers can expect a season-based approach here that other online sports video games have adopted.

All of these modes, players, and courses — 30 at launch, the most ever for the standard edition of an EA Sports golf title — mean little if the core gameplay isn’t tight, informative, and understandable. While the event last week was not hands-on, the developers focused on the swing mechanism and the 20 shot types supporting it in a one-hole demonstration at Augusta’s No. 13.

Best example: a “stinger,” which is a lower but safer shot from the tee. Gameplay designer Craig Penner used the stinger to rope a 266-yard drive with Jordan Spieth that still hugged No. 13’s famous left-hand sweep — it just used the downhill fairway to get its distance. In the end, Spieth sacrificed about 10 yards of distance to make a safer shot. This is something I would often try to replicate in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14, but the lowest trajectory that game offered didn’t come close to what I saw last week.

Casual headshot of Craig Penner, the gameplay designer for EA Sports PGA Tour

Gameplay designer Craig Penner said he was “just straight-up going after the pins” at a course with favorable greens. At TPC Sawgrass, he said, “I had to switch the way I played to go for more of the middle of the green. You can’t pin-hunt. You have to actually play that course.”
    Photo: Electronic Arts

Ramsour, playing as 2022 Masters winner Scottie Scheffler, used a boost-assisted power drive — impressive, and successful, but still a dangerous shot that is a blind approach, and which could clip the treetops if not executed perfectly. But again, Scheffler is longer off the tee than Spieth, so both golfers were playing to type and taking, or avoiding, appropriate risks (especially as they were highlighted by Course Fit).

I was also struck by the bits of commentary we heard from the game as the demonstration played out. For once, it sounded like the broadcast team was actually watching what was being played. Lead commentator Rich Lerner returns from 2015’s Rory McIlroy PGA Tour, and on Penner’s shot with Spieth, I heard him discussing the use of the fairway’s width and slope to get the desired result.

Returning broadcast partner Frank Nobilo (and new course reporters Notah Begay III and Iona Stephen) also provided context-appropriate color, a dramatic improvement over past games, which mostly offered generic repetition.

“We have tech that delivers detailed analysis on how putts will break,” Baker said in last week’s presentation. “There’s also a system that connects the field reporter analysis of the current situation, and also highlights landmarks from our great list of courses, to tell historical stories from those exact spots on the course.”

EA Sports PGA Tour launches March 24 — two weeks before the 2023 Masters — on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. It will be available in a standard edition as well as a digital deluxe version, which offers three-day early access, plus some content that includes an XP boost and virtual currency for the in-game pro shop’s items.

  • EA Sports PGA Tour Preview – Driving Forward – Game Informer

EA Sports PGA Tour Preview – Driving Forward – Game Informer

    [ad_1]

EA Sports has been producing officially licensed PGA Tour video games since 1990, with stars like Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy lending their names to the product over the years. However, the company has not released a PGA Tour video game since 2015, meaning other franchises have had time to slide into the space once occupied by EA Sports’ mainstay series.

However, EA Sports is ready to make up for lost time with its newest title. The emphasis this time around is on realism, not only with how the players and courses look but also in how players must approach every hole. For starters, each of the 30 launch courses was created with the help of the course superintendents, state-of-the-art technology (including helicopters equipped with lasers), and even geologists to ensure the most true-to-life experience for players when they step into the course-accurate tee boxes. Licensed players and realistic crowds also received a keen emphasis, with players from both the PGA and LPGA Tours mapped using high-tech cameras in multiple poses to render them in the Frostbite Engine. In addition, actors were scanned for the crowd to make them feel like actual people on the course instead of cardboard cutouts.

The four Majors were among the highest priority for the developers, as the PGA Championship, The Open Championship, the U.S. Open, and the Masters all feature custom presentations, highly detailed in-game trophy models, and special commentary. Speaking of commentary, players can expect hundreds of hours of content from a broad analysis team to avoid repetitive chitchat when you’re working through the various courses. You can also tweak various presentation and gameplay settings, including how dense you want the crowd to be during your round.

When you finally do step up for your first drive, the gameplay leverages ShotLink and Trackman data used for real-world analytics of PGA Tour players for realistic outcomes on every shot. This data allows each bounce and roll to behave accurately across every terrain and slope, even taking into account which type of grass grows at each course. In fact, every course in the game has its own physics profile, so playing through a dreary day at The Old Course at St. Andrews Links feels different than a humid round at TPC Sawgrass.

After selecting your club and approaching your ball, you have 20 different shot types to choose from, letting you attack each course how you want to and how the pros do in real life; you can even adjust the shape of your shot’s arc to perfect your approach. Using the analog stick to control the swing, players must execute the backswing in a smooth and efficient manner and time their impact on the ball to maximize results. If you time it just right, you receive a Big Hit Moment, a series trademark where you get a slow-motion view with a dramatic camera angle to emphasize your mastery on that stroke. Once you’re on the green, putting is also controlled by the analog stick, with a line that shows how far back to stroke and a shot assist option to help you aim. EA Tiburon hopes to add the traditional three-click control scheme to the game post-launch.

While you can play locally or online in unranked play, tournaments, private matches, and other game modes (including one where 16 players are simultaneously on the course), the destination mode is Career. Unified RPG progression lets you make the decisions you want to make for your created player, giving you meaningful choices to build your golfer from the ground up with skills, abilities, and gear to complement the robust customization options. In Career, you can even choose where you want to start, whether that’s as an amateur, on the developmental Korn Ferry Tour, or all the way in the PGA Tour; winning championships in the amateur circuit opens invites to more prestigious tournaments, giving you a meaningful feeling of progression.

Though it’s been a while since EA Sports released a licensed golf game, PGA Tour looks to pull out all the stops in pursuit of delivering the most realistic experience we’ve ever seen. Though I’ve long since fallen off the sim-golf genre, I’m already eyeing my tee time on March 24 when the game arrives on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

  • EA Sports PGA Tour Is Using Laser Scanning Helicopters and More to Deliver the Most Realistic Golf Game Yet – Xbox Wire

EA Sports PGA Tour Is Using Laser Scanning Helicopters and More to Deliver the Most Realistic Golf Game Yet – Xbox Wire

    [ad_1]

    Summary

    • Some of the world’s most exclusive golf courses will appear in EA Sports PGA Tour, designed in stunning fidelity powered by the Frostbite engine.
    • EA Sports PGA Tour is the exclusive home of the Majors, including the Masters Tournament, the PGA Championship, the U.S. Open Championship, and The Open.
    • EA Sports PGA Tour will launch for Xbox Series X|S on March 24, 2023.

I’ve never set foot on Augusta National Golf Course, but after seeing some of the Frostbite engine-powered tech on display in the upcoming EA Sports PGA Tour, I wouldn’t be surprised if I start to catch a whiff of freshly cut grass in my living room when I sit down and start playing on Xbox Series X|S on March 24.

That’s the incredible level of authenticity that the teams at EA Orlando and EA Madrid are striving to achieve with PGA Tour. Not only are they aiming to usher in the return of an iconic video game sports franchise, one with lifelike accuracy from ball physics and club types, but they want to drive home the majesty of the game and what it’s like to step foot on some of the world’s most prestigious golf courses.

To bring these to life, the team gained exclusive access to these courses and sought advice from some of the foremost geologists to help map out each course with cutting edge photogrammetry, GPS mapping tech utilizing helicopters (with lasers!), airplanes, and drones. They also conducted ground mapping and on-site photography at every course to capture the most minute details. All of this results in a magnificent-looking game.

It will launch with some of the most iconic stops on the PGA Tour, like the Island Green at TPC Sawgrass, the crazy 16th party hole at Scottsdale, Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill, and each leg of the FedEx Cup. These are what the development team are referring to as the “30 Bucket List Courses” in the game.

    EA Sports PGA Tour Screenshot

“We even went to New Zealand to create Tara Iti, the number two course on Golf Digest’s list of the greatest courses in the world,” says Producer Ben Ramsour. “Also on our international list is Banff Springs set in the Canadian Rocky Mountains and the Evian Resort in France. Of course, we have the trifecta of the ultimate ‘Bucket List’ courses, like The Old Course at Saint Andrews, Pebble Beach Golf Links, and the legendary Augusta National Golf Club.”

    Stop and Smell the Flowers

It was at this point during our first-look demo that we saw in-game captured footage showcasing the incredible level of detail that’s possible on Xbox Series X|S, featuring a lifelike shot of Founder’s Circle at Augusta and the beautiful azalea flowers that surround this iconic course.

“Augusta’s botanist team gave us access to their tree health software to ensure we properly place every tree and [piece of] vegetation that a player will see in our game,” mentions Ramsour, as he continues to show other detailed shots like ultra-realistic looking crowds that utilize Frostbite’s swarm crowd system, and the lone cypress that stands on the cliffs of Pebble Beach.

    EA Sports PGA Tour Screenshot

“Our use of photogrammetry was especially useful in capturing every nook and cranny of rock formations and foliage from the real thing. At The Country Club (featured in the film, ‘The Greatest Game Ever Played’), we used a low flying helicopter to map the course,” continues Ramsour. “The chopper was equipped with a laser designed to find gold mines and oil reserves; the LiDAR and photogrammetry data is 30 times more dense than publicly available data that other games and simulators use.”

All this visual fidelity isn’t just for show either. This data helps inform all other aspects of play, which means more realistic terrain, slopes, ball behavior, and surface dynamics, ensuring players can experience these iconic courses like never before.

    Let’s Go Clubbing

EA Sports PGA Tour’s Pure Strike system is powered by ShotLink, the real-time scoring system that the PGA Tour uses, and TrackMan data, which calculates ball flight measurement and swing analysis. That means players will have all the tools they need to realistically attack every hole on every course the same way the pros do — a whole new level of golf simulation that’s never really been tackled before, again thanks to the power of Frostbite on Xbox Series X|S.

    EA Sports PGA Tour Screenshot

“One of the most impactful ways players will interact with Pure Strike is through shot types,” explains Gameplay Designer Craig Penner. “We’re introducing 20 different shot types so now every time you approach the ball, you don’t only choose your club, but also the type of shot you want to hit. Each shot type is unique per club and trajectory so under the hood there are over 1300 unique physics profiles that power these shot types. We develop them with ShotLink and TrackMan data, so that each shot produces ball speeds, launch angles, spin rates, and shots dispersions that you would expect in real life… allowing players to attack each course and each hole just like the pros you see on TV.”

Speaking of the pros, Ramsour was also excited to share some of the work put into modeling the professional golfers you’ll see in the game.

    EA Sports PGA Tour Screenshot

“Our characters look absolutely stunning! We leveraged character head and body scanning tech used for Hollywood movies; our scanning rig has over 130 cameras that take simultaneous pictures. We took shots in multiple poses so that we could see the unique way the muscle on the players’ faces and bodies move, so that each athlete moves authentically to how they do in real life when rendered in Frostbite’s animation engine. The pandemic made it challenging to scan, but we were lucky enough to be included as part of the PGA Tour’s bubble so we could scan our athletes.”

    Return of the King

On top of everything we saw during our first-look demo, EA Sports PGA Tour is also launching with several other robust features to make it a truly compelling package, one that also includes the LPGA Tour’s five major championships, an overhauled Create-A-Player feature, competitive multiplayer modes, and more — it seems like EA Sports PGA Tour is primed to reclaim their crown as one of the best video game golf franchises.

  • F This Trophy: Final Fantasy 7 Crisis Core’s Most Frustrating Achievement – IGN

F This Trophy: Final Fantasy 7 Crisis Core’s Most Frustrating Achievement – IGN

    [ad_1]

Trophies may not be for everyone, but for me and many others Trophy hunting is fun method of achieving that sweet, sweet 100% completion on a game. A much-deserved prize for doing everything there is to do. Lots of games have easy requirements for Platinum Trophies, and often certain quests or challenges associated with them will reward you with cool stuff for going the extra mile. But while collecting Trophies is mostly a lot of fun, sometimes one comes along that makes us question our choices in life. To those we say, “F This Trophy”.

This week’s ‘F this Trophy’ is the DMW Master Trophy from Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion. The DMW is a strange slot machine-style mechanic that constantly ticks over during battles, its three reels displaying the faces of characters you have met across the story. When those reels align and display three of the same character, it triggers a Limit Break; a powerful ability associated with that character.

The DMW Master Trophy requires you to achieve 100% completion for each of the 18 Limit Breaks in the game. Now you might be saying ‘Hey, Jada, that doesn’t sound so bad – Limit Breaks are awesome! Channeling Sephiroth’s Octaslash, Aerith’s Healing Wave, and all the other character’s special abilities in battle can help turn the tide, so you want to use them whenever possible.’

Yes, this is true. But in the case of this Trophy, I’m not chasing the actual limit breaks. I already have all 18 of them. Instead, I need to unlock each and every flashback memory associated with each Limit Break. These are cutscenes that trigger in the middle of the battle and call back to prior moments in the story. They’re kind of annoying as they slow down the action in a battle, which is a sin on its own, but that’s not what we are talking about today. The issue with this Trophy is that progress, rather than being awarded based on skill, time, or effort, is awarded based on random LUCK.

Each of the 18 Limit Breaks have six unique memories, but there’s no way of triggering specific ones. These memories are pulled from the story you have already witnessed, so you first must put in the work and complete the whole game to ensure that the DMW system can call on every single memory. But after that, it’s entirely out of your hands: the DMW rolls Limit Breaks at random, and then it will choose one of the memories at random. So to hit 100% completion on the DMW, you… just have to keep playing until it happens.

To hit 100% completion on the DMW, you… just have to keep playing until it happens.

You can improve your odds to some degree. The Limit Break system is based on Luck; not just the real-world concept, but the in-game stat, too. Specialized materia and equipment you can equip to boost your Luck does help, but you are still ultimately at the mercy of unpredictable RNG.

Now I know there are a lot of people who may have better luck than me when it comes to this Trophy, but it took me 12 hours (12 hours!) to get it. I hit a point where I only needed two more flashback memories to get the Trophy, and so I left my game running in a level one mission, letting enemies shoot me in the face, in the hope that the right Limit Breaks and the right memories would roll up on the DMW. I left for a birthday party, went out for dinner, came home, played a couple of missions of Mario Rabbids: Sparks of Hope, and then picked Crisis Core back up. I still hadn’t gotten the two final flashbacks I needed. Like, what the hell?

You may ask what made this Trophy worth getting. Well, aside from being one more Trophy closer to the Platinum, DMW Master also unlocks the Genji Armor, which happens to be one of the best pieces of gear ever dispensed by a glorified slot machine.

Before any of you in the comments come for me saying that you got this Trophy faster or easier, I’m happy that you didn’t have as many issues as I did. I love Final Fantasy games and have been asking for a Crisis Core remake since the PS4 released. It is still one of my favorite PSP games of all times. And I’m sure some in the comments will say I just didnt know what I was doing. But this is my second time going through the game, I had maxed out Luck, was optimized with two mastered materias for Cissnei to increase the chances of my slots lining up, and had mastered materias to improve the odds of getting the character Limit Breaks I needed to show up. Just keep in mind the real kicker is that even if the DMW triggers a Limit Break, there is no guarantee you get a flashback, and then if you do get a flashback, there’s no guarantee it’s the one you need.

So F This Trophy, Crisis Core, and F random number generators.

Ubisoft Confirms Team-Based Arena Combat Game, Project Q, Has Been Canceled

    [ad_1]

A Ubisoft game known as Project Q leaked early last year before the Assassin’s Creed maker revealed its existence, calling it a team-based battle arena combat game

Insider Gaming reported yesterday that Ubisoft had canceled Project Q and now, Ubisoft has confirmed that this is, in fact, true to Video Games Chronicle

“We can confirm we will no longer support the development of Project Q in order to focus on priority projects, to which our teams are being reallocated,” Ubisoft told VGC

This cancelation comes after Ubisoft delayed Skull and Bones last week alongside news that it had canceled three unannounced games. It’s currently unclear if Project Q was one of those three games canceled (while Project Q was technically announced, it was revealed as an in-the-works project rather than a game with a final title so perhaps Ubisoft considered it unannounced).

Past and Present Collide in ‘The Secret Wilds’, Sea of Thieves’ 11th Adventure, Live Until February 2! – Xbox Wire

    [ad_1]

    Summary

    • Ancient vistas lead to hidden truths in Sea of Thieves’ latest time-limited Adventure, live from January 19 to February 2.
    • Don the mask of the infamous Captain Briggsy, using her wisdom to navigate fragments of the past as you seek to cure a curse.
    • Sea of Thieves is available free for all players with Xbox Game Pass and across Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows 10/11 and Steam.

The festive season has come and gone, but while pirates across the waves were busy celebrating Grogmanay, the Order of Souls were hard at work. Hoping to cure Tasha the tavern keeper of a skeletal curse that’s consuming her, Madame Olivia has now recovered memories of Captain Briggsy – the notorious rogue who once searched far and wide for the rumoured restorative that would free her from her own fleshless fate.

    Memories of the Mask

Sea of Thieves previous Adventure, ‘The Rogue’s Legacy’, tasked pirates with recovering keepsakes hidden by Briggsy long ago, intended to train Tasha in pirate practices as she went about retrieving them (if you need to learn more about this quest, our latest Adventures Ahead article can fill in the blanks). Three of these gifts were successfully delivered to Madame Olivia at Plunder Outpost, but that was only the beginning of the story…

All too aware how dangerous it would be to place a Skeleton Lord’s spirit back into their waiting skull, Madame Olivia has accomplished an equally tricky task, imbuing Briggsy’s distinctive mask with the memories of its former owner. How close was Briggsy to locating the cure she so desperately sought? The only way to find out is for pirates to take up the mask, learn the truth from Briggsy herself and journey to The Wilds in her wake.

    Star Power

Inquisitive crews will soon discover that Briggsy’s mask confers more than one advantage. Its jewelled eye is no mere gemstone; rather, it houses Ancient knowledge of secret starfields, each very different from the night sky to which pirates have become accustomed. When considered correctly, these constellations reveal a long-forgotten tale of duty and sacrifice that set Briggsy on her path to the cure, though all may not be quite as it seems…

Picking up the quest that Briggsy began so long ago is a considerable undertaking. Cunning and curiosity will be needed in equal measure if Tasha is to be saved, especially when The Wilds continue to bloom with strange, lush patches that suggest powerful forces are at work behind the scenes. To start your journey into ‘The Secret Wilds’, begin the Adventure by speaking with Larinna outside the tavern at any time between now and February 2.

Elsewhere on the waves, the Battle for the Sea of Thieves continues to rage between the Guardians of Fortune and the Servants of the Flame. The team at Rare have been hard at work improving the PvP matchmaking feature set based on player feedback, with the aim of allowing Faction crews to seek out combat much more swiftly. As detailed in the latest release notes, today’s content update not only delivers a new Adventure but includes a number of enhancements to these on-demand ship encounters, including same-Faction battles designed to boost the pool of viable opponents and get battle-hungry crews into the fray with a minimum of waiting.

Definitely Not Fried Chicken Free Download (v0.3.22)

    [ad_1]

Definitely Not Fried Chicken Direct Download:

Definitely Not Fried Chicken is cooked using a special technique that involves baking the chicken in the oven, rather than deep-frying it. This method not only reduces the amount of fat and calories in the dish, but it also allows the chicken to retain its natural moisture, resulting in a juicy and tender final product. The key to the delicious flavor of Definitely Not Fried Chicken is the blend of herbs and spices used to marinate the chicken before it’s cooked. The marinade contains a blend of paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and other herbs and spices that give the chicken a bold and savory flavor.

The chicken is also coated in a gluten-free breading, made with almond flour and other ingredients, that provides a crispy texture. Definitely Not Fried Chicken can be customized to suit your personal taste preferences. For a spicy kick, additional chili powder or hot sauce can be added to the marinade. For a sweeter taste, a touch of honey can be added to the marinade. You can also experiment with different herbs and spices, such as cumin or thyme, to give the dish a unique flavor.

    Definitely Not Fried Chicken Pre-Installed:

Definitely Not Fried Chicken is the perfect dish to serve with a variety of sides. It goes well with traditional sides such as coleslaw, macaroni and cheese, or mashed potatoes. But it’s also delicious served with more unique sides like cauliflower rice, roasted vegetables, or quinoa salad. Definitely Not Fried Chicken is a healthier alternative to traditional fried chicken that doesn’t sacrifice flavor. The unique cooking method and blend of herbs and spices used in the marinade give the dish a bold and savory flavor, while the gluten-free breading provides a crispy texture.

  • Steam’s Lunar New Year sale is here, after Valve said it wasn’t going ahead

Steam’s Lunar New Year sale is here, after Valve said it wasn’t going ahead

    [ad_1]

If you log into Steam right now, you’ll find that the Lunar New Year sale is currently underway. This is despite Valve having said that it would be cancelled and replaced with a later, spring sale in March.

With Death Stranding on sale again, here’s the reveal trailer for Death Stranding 2.

Back in September of last year, Valve went ahead and detailed all of its anticipated sale dates. In that blog post, it also shared that the winter sale and Lunar New Year sale were too close to one another. As a result, the latter was to be cancelled and replaced with a spring sale in March. That said, Valve did also note that publishers and developers were welcome to discount their games during the Lunar New Year if they wanted to.

Now, if you head to Steam’s home page, you’ll find a banner for the Lunar New Year sale, and an abundance of titles discounted as a result. This is actually an independent Steam sale as part of the East Meets West initiative led by Curve Games, and will run from January 16 to January 23.

In a press release, CEO of XD, Dash Huang, shares that, “video games have always been a great way to bring people together from different backgrounds, and this event provides such an innovative platform for players to explore unfamiliar worlds.”

As a result, over 150 publishers have come together to discount over 750 games in this sale. Some notable titles include the following:

    • Death Stranding
    • Sifu
    • Naraka: Bladepoint
    • Dyson Sphere Program
    • Halo Infinite
    • Forza Horizon 5
    • Persona 5 Royal
    • Tales of Arise
    • My Time at Sandrock
    • Gears 5
    • Scarlet Nexus
    • Sword and Fairy 7
    • Risk of Rain 2
    • Human Fall Flat
    • Subnautica
    • Sands of Salzaar

And of course, there are many more than this to choose from. What games will you be picking up, or did the Steam winter sale already sort you out for the time being? Do let us know if you discover any must-play gems.

‘Ten Dates’, the Sequel to the Interactive Romantic Comedy ‘Five Dates’, Releases on February 14th – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Wales Interactive just revealed the first trailer for Ten Dates, the sequel to the interactive romantic comedy game Five Dates (Free). Ten Dates is due on Valentine’s day worldwide for mobile, PC, and consoles. Ten Dates features Misha from London who tricks her best friend Ryan into going on a speed dating event with her. It features real-time relationship status tracking that adapts the story, a streamer mode (likely not on mobile), and more. Watch the announcement trailer (via GodisaGeek) for Ten Dates from Wales Interactive below:

As of this writing, pre-orders and pre-registrations aren’t available yet. You can wishlist it on Steam and even sample the game through a free demo here. Check out the official website here. Wales Interactive have been bringing quality FMV games to multiple platforms including mobile over the years, and I’m looking forward to what else the studio has in the works for iOS and Android this year. I’m still a few releases behind on Wales Interactive’s catalogue. My recent favorite FMV game is definitely Square Enix’s The Centennial Case: A Shijima Story. Have you played Wales Interactive’s recent FMV games on mobile and did you play Five Dates when it hit iOS and Android?

Accoring to the rundown of her role provided by The Direct, Emma Stone is set to play Rachel, a divorced woman fighting cancer whom receives a mysterious call telling her that her 12 year old daughter, Kylie, has been kidnapped. In order to safely retrieve Kylie, Rachel must kidnap another child. Only when the parents of the child Rachel kidnaps succeed in kidnapping a child themselves, will Kylie be released, thus completing a sick game known as ‘The Chain’. However, if the parents of the child that has been kidnapped don’t act on the instructions given, the previous child in question will be killed.

While the project was first announced two and a half years ago, there is currently no confirmation of an official release date. Emma Stone also has other significant projects in to work around, such as the sequel to Disney’s Cruella, which was planned to shoot during 2023.

It can be assumed that production of The Chain could potentially begin this year if they can squeeze it in before Cruella, or during 2024, if it has to follow. This means that depending on development schedules and progression, the release of the film could fall anywhere between 2024 and 2025, if everything goes to plan.

Tomb Raider Reemerges as PowerWash Simulator DLC That Lets You Clean Lara Croft’s Mansion – IGN

All of that time away has taken its toll on the Croft Manor, and now the iconic Tomb Raider locale needs a scrub down. To restore Lara Croft’s lavish dwellings, PowerWash Simulator will crossover with Tomb Raider later this month in a free DLC for all players.

On January 31, the bizarre crossover from Square Enix Collective and FuturLab brings a free Tomb Raider Special Pack to PowerWash Simulator owners on consoles and PC. The trailer shows off a few familiar places around Lara’s home, including an outdoors obstacle course reminiscent of her earliest PlayStation adventures.

It looks like the inside has plenty to tidy, too. The PowerWash Simulator footage teases a few clean-up jobs around the Croft Manor, where layers of grime and dirt cover everything from the walls to ancient artifacts.

It’s not her most thrilling gig, but it at least looks satisfying. In a press release for the special Tomb Raider DLC, FuturLab lead designer Dan Chequer added, “We can’t wait for players to get up close and personal with Croft Manor and explore its many secrets!”

As for what those secrets are, we’ll have to wait and see, but it’s the most recent adventure Lara Croft has been on in a while. The studio behind Tomb Raider and several others were recently acquired by Embracer Group, while Amazon Studios signed a deal to help publish Lara’s next big game.

PowerWash Simulator is available now on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One. Alongside the Tomb Raider Special Pack, it will launch on January 31 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch.

  • Deep Rock Galactic (The Board Game): The Kotaku Review

Deep Rock Galactic (The Board Game): The Kotaku Review

    [ad_1]

Co-op shooter Deep Rock Galactic was first released on the PC back in 2018. It has a dedicated following online, and tons of loyal fans, but this is not a review of the video game. This is a review of the board game with, confusingly, the exact same name.

And the name is not the only thing the two have in common. While a lot of board game adaptations I cover here tend to worry more about the spirit of the video game more than its literal interpretation, Deep Rock Galactic’s tabletop experience, despite its shift to a turn-based system, is very similar to its digital one.

You and up to three other players take control of space dwarves who are headed into a dark cave to drill for gems. So far, so video game. You then find those caves full of alien bugs that you have to mow down. Again, just like the video game. Then you have to grab those gems and get the hell out of there. You can see where this is going.

    Image: MOOD

The difference here, of course, is that in the video game this plays out in a Left 4 Dead-like frenzy, as players rush around in real-time playing a frantic shooter. The board game is much more relaxing, as it shifts to a system where players are able to take turns, and their time, working through the caves.

Deep Rock Galactic looks, and plays, like so many other modern dungeon-crawling games, from Descent to Imperial Assault. Everybody gets action points they can use to move around and interact with stuff (“interacting” includes “shooting insects in the face”), everybody gets unique weapons and powers they can use and, as expected in 2023 for a licensed game, everything—from the dwarves to the bugs even down to the stalagmites—is represented by a set of incredibly detailed, immensely satisfying miniatures.

(NOTE: The game ships in two editions. The standard only has plastic minis for the dwarves, while the pricier deluxe edition, which I played, has minis for everything).

Where this tries to do its own thing, and match the video game’s feel (if not pace) at the same time, is the way enemy actions are triggered. Rather than basing enemy moves off initiative, or having them move after all players have done so, in Deep Rock Galactic every time a dwarf concludes their move they draw an event card, and these almost always trigger an enemy spawn and/or move.

The build quality on this game is impressive. Each player card is full of recessed slots for your ammo and tokens, always a welcome (and premium) move by publishers.

Having them appear on the board so often, and moving before all players have had a chance to react, may sound unfair but it does a fantastic job of feeling just like the video game, in that you’re being constantly swarmed by stuff crawling out of the walls. And it’s rarely unfair anyway, because each dwarf is loaded with very cool (and powerful) weapons that satisfying blow huge chunks in any insect hordes making it close enough to you.

The key consideration of the board game, again like the video game, is to balance your need to mine a certain quantity of resources versus your need to keep blasting enemies to stay alive. Lean too far towards one of those approaches and you’ll fail the mission, either because you didn’t mine the goods in time (each level has a time limit) or because…you’re all dead.

I like the video game and I like dungeon crawlers, and so for the most part I really loved playing Deep Rock Galactic. The tension between the game’s two imperatives is constant and perfectly-balanced throughout, and its combat—a combination of your powerful weapons and hordes of huge plastic miniatures you get to move around and throw off the board when dead—is some of the most fun I’ve had in ages with a game of this type.

Plus, and I know people (myself included!) are getting tired of every game shipping with a ton of minis, in this instance they’re very welcome, not just because they’re so detailed and solid but because the game also includes a MULE that you drop your little gems into, a tactile experience so wonderful it was maybe the highlight of the entire game for me.

Nothing is more enjoyable in this game than dropping gems into your MULE and popping the lid closed.

One thing to note though is that, despite its pricepoint and genre, Deep Rock isn’t the kind of long-term tabletop experience you might be expecting. While the idea of a miniatures-heavy dungeon crawler may conjure expectations of a days-long campaign, Deep Rock Galactic is actually just a collection of standalone missions that can be tackled in an hour or so depending on how many players are taking part (another cool feature of the “bad guys go at the end of every player’s turn” system is that it scales perfectly to the number of humans at the table).

While there is technically a campaign—just a brief to do all the missions in order without dying—and it’s not a game built around narrative, it’s still a bit weird pulling out such a huge box and setting it up for what’s essentially a mid-length session game.

That’s not a problem, just something to note ahead of time if you were thinking of picking this up or playing it. You should also know that, despite being a very literal adaptation of a video game license, this requires absolutely no familiarity with the digital version of Deep Rock Galactic whatsoever. So long as you know you’re a space dwarf drilling and gems while also shooting bugs, you’re good to go.

About my only real criticism of the game is that it’s documentation is some of the most frustrating I’ve encountered in a while, lacking in a proper quick start guide and splitting its important information between separate rules and mission books, which made our first mission a very slow slog. Indeed it took us forever to find out how the enemy system even worked (pretty important info!), so if you’re playing this and have the time I’d 100% recommend watching an online rules explainer beforehand.

Here is a very strange warning: these are the sharpest minis I have ever encountered.

There’s nothing revolutionary about Deep Rock Galactic. As I’ve alluded to above it’s another dungeon crawler, another licensed adaptation and another game that (version depending) has a ton of minis. But fans of the video game will find a tabletop conversion that faithfully converts the co-op experience into one more conducive to drinking beer and being in the room at the same time, while everyone else will just find a solid night’s gaming blowing up space bugs and looting some treasure.

Drake Now Owns Pharrell’s $20,000 Golden PSP

    [ad_1]

Hi, welcome, let’s take a break from industry news and global doom and talk about a rap video and very, very expensive PlayStation Portable handheld.

Producer, rapper and anime enthusiast Pharrell Williams was, a very long time ago, slightly notable for owning a 14-karat gold Blackberry (I told you it was a very long time ago). In 2008, to keep the theme going, he bought a PSP and “commissioned a 14K gold PSP casing to replace the stock plastic”.

This shinier, much heavier PSP (coming in at 660g vs a stock PSP’s 280g) wasn’t designed to just carry around in his pockets; to complement the extravagance of the handheld itself—which wasn’t jewellery, he was still using it to play games on—Pharrell also had a custom Goyard case made up.

Why am I telling you this now, in 2023? Partly because I only just found out about it, and thought the idea of Pharrell Williams owning a golden PlayStation Portable is about the most “Last Days Of Rome” act of pre-GFC extravagance I can think of sharing on this website in a feature that’s all about video game history.

I’m also telling you this in 2023 because that very same PSP just turned up in a new Drake video, after the Canadian rapper spent a few million bucks buying some of Pharrell’s old stuff—mostly jewellery—at auction. The PSP is visible just a few seconds in, gets waved at the screen around 0:50 and gets very close to the camera at 1:29:

If you’d like to see more pics of the PSP, here’s the auction listing (on Pharrell’s own auction site), which shows that it sold last year for $19,375

  • Darkest Dungeon 2 Relationship Skills Guide – How To Form Positive Relationships

Darkest Dungeon 2 Relationship Skills Guide – How To Form Positive Relationships

    [ad_1]

The Darkest Dungeon II Relationships mechanic might seem like a trivial element compared to the stress that your heroes can suffer, as well as quirks and other debuffs during combat. But if you’re not careful about the current Affinity Levels of your party, they can soon start turning against each other, leading to various annoying moments. Learning how to use this mechanic in your favor is key to making the most out of each expedition, and of course, managing to survive longer.

After the release of The Void Between Us update in January 2023, Relationships have been iterated quite drastically. As a mechanic that previously cause some debate in the community following the early access period, the latest tweaks should be more than welcome if you also thought that some of its randomized elements didn’t quite work in its favor. This guide explains everything you need to know about Relationship Skills in Darkest Dungeon II, as well as the best ways to form positive relationships amongst your crew.

Now Playing: Darkest Dungeon & The Difficult Game Revival – The Lobby

How to form relationships in Darkest Dungeon II

Relationships and Affinity go hand in hand. Your Affinity Level between characters is going to determine the types of relationships they can form, either positive or negative. After the release of The Void Between Us update, relationships can now only form at the Inn. In exception for the first one you visit after the introductory trip on your bandwagon, each subsequent visit to future Inns will result in different pairings.

It’s worth noting that the relationships won’t occur until after you’ve rested, so you have some leeway to try and tip the scale to either side across your party. Once you’re all set, the screen right before embarking will signalize any relationships that have formed. Clicking on them will let you know whether the outcome is positive or negative, as well as detail which Relationship Skills were affected (more on this later).

‘Playing Cards’ is a great Inn item to foster relationships – both positive and negative.

There are different ways to create bonds amongst your party, but if you’re wondering how to form positive relationships in Darkest Dungeon II, here are some tips:

    • Keep an eye out for Inn items: Items such as ‘Playing Cards’ are usually on the cheaper side, and can also be obtained as loot or rewards during expeditions. Unless the Affinity Levels of your characters are already in a state that you’re comfortable with, using these items before embarking on the next expedition can help greatly. At the end of the day they’re still a gamble, but who knows, pushing your luck might get you favorable results after all.
    • The Inns themselves can impact your Affinity, too: Whenever you reach an Inn, make sure to hover over its icon on the top left corner to see whether or not there will be any effects on the party.
    • During decision-making moments, trust your gut: On occasion, you’ll end up having to decide between different party members before an encounter or during a conversation with NPCs. You can tell whether a choice is going to impact someone positively or negatively by the colored “aura” around the characters (gold and blue, respectively). It’s up to you how you want to tackle each situation – just make sure to pay attention to this before committing to the wrong pick.
    • Your actions in combat matter: Similarly to the choice-driven events, using some skills over others leads to different effects. Thankfully, these are signalized by either color during that character’s turn, so it’s up to you how you want to handle each situation. Sometimes you will really need to use a specific skill and a negative result will inevitably occur.
    • Quirks are important: Quirks also play a big role in how relationships will work for that character. Most are usually unrelated, but it’s always worth opening the character screen and double-checking for yourself. Also, remember that new Quirks are bound to appear throughout expeditions.

Those are the basics, but again, remember that Darkest Dungeon II thrives in randomized values. Your characters are bound to increase or decrease their Affinity points with one another during expeditions. The steps above are mere tools to counter those effects, so you can try and turn the rules on your favor.

In addition, remember that relationships last throughout the upcoming expedition only, and don’t stay with you throughout the whole run. You can change from positive to negative and vice-versa, so having a negative relationship after your second visit to an Inn isn’t the end of the world.

How Relationship Skills Work in Darkest Dungeon II

As mentioned before, the decisions you make during combat have an impact on your party’s relationships. Once a bond is formed, a skill chosen at random from each of the two characters is going to receive a positive or negative buff. As such, whenever you use said skill in combat, the effect will take place, further affecting the relationship.

At the moment, the positive relationships are Respectful, Hopeful, and Amorous, while the negative batch is conformed by Suspicious, Hateful, and Envious. The skill buffs and debuffs can vary greatly, from random stress dealing or healing barks during combat, to enemies attacking or defending one another.

It's quite stressful to see party members turning against one another if you choose the wrong skills, but some dialogue barks add some interesting personality to your heroes.
It’s quite stressful to see party members turning against one another if you choose the wrong skills, but some dialogue barks add some interesting personality to your heroes.

If you’re trying to maintain as much peace as possible, I recommend always double-checking before using skills. If a party member has just been hit, for example, or has a debuff status (such as bleed or blight), there is a chance that taking care of them will gain you a few brownie points.

Whenever you have positive relationship skills, I recommend using them as often as you can. Negative ones, on the other hand, are trickier: You can’t swap them from the characters’ skill bars, so they will stay there throughout an expedition. And, well, if the skill that the game randomly chose is one you rely on often, prepare to make people angry whenever you use it.

Relationships in Darkest Dungeon II can be quite random, so it’s important to prepare yourself for every possible scenario – our beginner’s guide and step-by-step explainer to defeat the Denial Brain can help.
