The best new TV series on every streaming service

    [ad_1]

The streaming landscape is vast and hard to keep track of. TV shows pop up (and get canceled) seemingly overnight, and even if you’re in a place where you’re looking for a new show to sink hours into, it can be overwhelming to make the right choice.

That’s what we’re here for. We’re going to keep this post updated with the most recent series on each of the major streaming platforms that we liked, as well as some other options if our pick doesn’t sound like your particular jam.

So, below, find the best new shows on Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, HBO Max, Disney Plus, Paramount Plus, Apple TV, and Peacock.

The best new shows on Netflix

    Derry Girls

    Image: Netflix

    Genre: Teen sitcom/dark comedy
    Creator: Lisa McGee
Cast: Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Louisa Harland, Nicola Coughlan

My colleague Zosha Millman described Derry Girls episodes as “impeccably designed Rube Goldberg machines,” and I haven’t been able to shake that description since. Derry Girls follows the adventures of a group of young troublemakers in Derry, Northern Ireland, set against the backdrop of the Troubles. It’s a fun and breezy 20ish-minute comedy filled with belly laughs and surprising moments of deep emotion, especially when the girls’ lives intersect with the broader conflict happening outside their door. It’s one of the funniest comedies on Netflix, and an easy selection for this list. —Pete Volk

Also good: Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the new anime from CD Projekt Red and studio Trigger; The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House, a food-centric drama from master filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda; and The Sandman, the live-action adaptation of the DC Comics fantasy horror series by Neil Gaiman.

The best new TV on Hulu

    Reservation Dogs

Four teenagers in black suits and ties walking through a parking lot.

    Image: FX/Hulu

    Genre: Teen drama/comedy
    Creators: Sterlin Harjo, Taika Waititi
Cast: Devery Jacobs, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Lane Factor

Our No. 10 show of 2022 was No. 3 on my personal ballot. Reservation Dogs is a wonderful thing — a show about misfits living on a reservation in Oklahoma who want nothing more than to get far the hell away… until that far-the-hell-away becomes actually tangible. While Taika Waititi produces the show, it is blissfully removed from his particular (and for me, very tiring) brand of humor, instead shining through award-winning filmmaker Sterlin Harjo and a dynamic cast of main characters and featured guests (the latest season included a memorable guest appearance by Prey star Amber Midthunder, and the legendary Gary Farmer and Wes Studi have hilarious recurring roles). —PV

Also good: What We Do in the Shadows, the hilarious TV adaptation of the modern-day vampire mockumentary, and the final season of Atlanta, the “Twin Peaks for rappers” comedy drama starring (and created by) Donald Glover.

The best new TV on Prime Video

    A League of Their Own

Greta (D’Arcy Carden) standing and talking to the assembled Rockford Peaches team in the locker room

    Image: Prime Video

    Genre: Period sports comedy/drama
    Creators: Will Graham, Abbi Jacobson
Cast: Abbi Jacobson, Chanté Adams, D’Arcy Carden

A League of Their Own (the movie) is a stone-cold classic for a reason. It’s got good story, a lot of heart, and an ensemble cast that packed a punch in every corner. A League of Their Own (the TV show) works for all those same reasons. But because it’s a show, we get to spend more time in the world, explore women’s baseball for Black women too, dig into the queerness of the era, and go long on just how much work actually goes into pulling together a baseball team from scratch. There’s still no crying in baseball, but it’s nice to explore the classic world of A League of Their Own with a bit more nuance and simply more time. It may not be a classic yet, but a girl can dream. —Zosha Millman

Also good: Paper Girls, a sci-fi coming of age comic adaptation unfortunately canceled after one season, and Reacher, a detective series that asks the important question, “What if Sherlock Holmes was absolutely massive?”

The best new TV on HBO Max

    House of the Dragon

Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen standing with his hands folded atop a cane in House of the Dragon

    Photo: Ollie Upton/HBO

    Genre: Fantasy/drama
Creators: Ryan Condal, George R.R. Martin
Cast: Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy

It’s not easy for a prequel to escape the long shadow of its originator, but HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon managed to make it look easy. The story takes place several hundred years before the events of Game of Thrones and builds its own independent and unique cast of characters whose plots, schemes, and betrayals make for fantastic television no matter how much time you’ve spent in Westeros. In the show’s first season, which aired in fall 2022, it sets up the two warring factions at the heart of a civil war, and sets the stage for a massive dragon-filled fight that should fill its next three seasons. —Austen Goslin

Also good: The Rehearsal, Nathan Fielder’s social experiment disguised as a TV show.

The best new TV on Disney Plus

    Andor

Diego Luna as Cassian Andor walks through a field of scrap, with machines broken and on fire.

    Photo: Des Willie/Lucasfilm

    Genre: Sci-fi/adventure
    Creator: Tony Gilroy
Cast: Diego Luna, Kyle Soller, Adria Arjona

Aside from being one of the best Star Wars shows to date, Andor has the enviable distinction of holding the No. 1 spot on our list of the best shows of 2022. Either of those two facts alone warrants the show’s inclusion on this list, but combined, that well-earned place feels all but mandatory. Tony Gilroy (Michael Clayton) returns to the Star Wars after his turn as co-screenwriter on 2016’s Rogue One, diving into an origin story of the eponymous Rebel captain that also functions as an origin story of the Rebel Alliance itself. The series meticulously moves away from the rote, Easter egg-laden iconography for which many Star Wars fans typically associate the franchise with and substitutes it with down-to-earth aesthetic and tone that treats the stakes of its universe as seriously as the underdogs who occupy it.

Diego Luna, much like his character, Cassian Andor, is the perfect leading man for the job, while Stellan Skarsgård’s supporting performance as the cunning rebellion ringleader Luthen Rael has quickly asserted itself as one of the best characters to come out of Star Wars since Disney acquired the property in 2012. It takes three or so episodes to shift into full gear, but once it does, it’s a exhilarating journey you’ll want to see through to the end. —Toussaint Egan

Also good: Willow, the TV revival of the 1988 fantasy adventure.

The best new TV on Paramount Plus

    Players

Fugitive Gaming poses for a team photo in Players.

    Photo: Lara Solanki/Paramount

    Genre: Mockumentary/drama
    Creators: Dan Perrault, Tony Yacenda
Cast: Misha Brooks, Da’Jour Jones, Ely Henry

Going back to the ol’ “where we ranked this versus where I did” discussion, Players was our No. 8 show of 2022, but No. 2 on my personal list. I will admit this should not surprise, as Players is so laser-targeted to my interests it felt like a gift from the heavens when it not only arrived on Paramount Plus, but was actually really good.

Players is a mockuseries from the brilliant creators of American Vandal (itself one of the very best shows on Netflix), following a fictional North American League of Legends team and the drama brewing between its two star players. This is where I tell you I used to cover League of Legends professionally, including the North American league. So it’s no surprise at all that I took to this show, but it is a surprise that many of my friends who had zero interest whatsoever in League (or professional League) also found it delightful. Reader, you’re next! —PV

Also good: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, the best of a stellar crop of new Star Trek shows.

The best new TV on Apple TV Plus

    Severance

The innies of Severance huddled around each other and holding Dylan back

    Photo: Atsushi Nishijima/Apple TV Plus

    Genre: Sci-fi/psychological thriller
    Creator: Dan Erickson
Cast: Adam Scott, Zach Cherry, Britt Lower

Severance’s stark science fiction take on the modern workplace, in which employees of a company known as Lumon undergo the titular “severance” procedure to have their consciousness split in two, is one of the most remarkably unsettling conceits in a show. Under severance, one half of a person’s identity, known as the “innie,” is the person they are at work, doing mundane tasks and punching out at the requisite time. When they step in the elevator to go home, however, they become their “outie” — the person who exists outside of the workplace, perhaps with a family, a lover, or a hobby. Innies and outies do not know anything about each other, by design — an almost benign-seeming way to exploit the people who work for you.

An easy favorite among critics both at Polygon and elsewhere, Severance speaks directly to a vague sense of unrest that’s becoming palpable in workplaces around the world, but it’s also just a damn good thriller. Uneasy, with bleak wit and steady dose of intrigue, Severance has style and substance — a quietly angry show for an increasingly angry time. —Joshua Rivera

Also good: Slow Horses, a British spy drama about a bunch of losers (including Gary Oldman) who would like a win.

The best new TV on Peacock

    Girls5eva

Summer (Busy Philips), Gloria (Paula Pell), and Dawn (Renée Elise Goldsberry) standing and looking disappointed at someone

    Image: Peacock

    Genre: Musical/comedy
    Creator: Meredith Scardino
Cast: Sara Bareilles, Busy Philipps, Paula Pell

It can sometimes feel like modern American comedies forgot the part where you’re supposed to have jokes. “Comedy” can feel synonymous with “feel-good entertainment” rather than “funny entertainment,” seemingly looking to provoke slight smiles rather than belly laughs.

No one tell Girls5eva. The heir apparent to 30 Rock as an entertainment industry comedy that is uproariously funny, it follows the members of a former girl group who decide to get back together and give this whole fame thing one more shot. The show has it all: It’s surprising, it’s funny, it’s delirious (complimentary), and it has a banger theme that will stick in your brain for eternity. —PV

Also good: The Resort, the dark mystery comedy starring William Jackson Harper (The Good Place) and Cristin Milioti (Made for Love) as a couple on vacation who stumble across a deadly mystery.

  • Forspoken Review – IGN

    Forspoken Review – IGN

    [ad_1]

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: a down-on-their-luck orphan has their life turned upside-down when they get whisked away to a fantastical new world where they suddenly have magical powers, reluctantly rising to become the hero its people need to stop an evil threat. If that sounds like every fantasy book you’ve ever forgotten you read, it’s probably because Forspoken is a remarkably generic RPG – from its bland story to its lifeless open world. Thankfully its energetic combat and flashy parkour movement system do keep the relatively slim campaign decently entertaining throughout, but running through its boilerplate checklist of repetitive side tasks doesn’t hold much appeal beyond mindless trophy hunting after that.

The newest action-RPG from Square Enix puts you in the brooding shoes of Frey Holland, a well-acted but largely unlikable New Yorker who gets pulled through a portal to the fantasy realm of Athia after accidentally becoming bonded to an equally unlikable talking armband she calls Cuff. The four realms of Athia have been afflicted with a corruption that has forced its populace into the last remaining city of Cipal, and it falls on Frey and her newly imbued powers to help its citizens and face four powerful rulers called Tantas – not that she’s very interested in doing so.

Forspoken’s world and story are about as bland as they come, equal parts predictable and forgettable. That’s not so offensive on its own, but the real crime is how poorly the writing establishes any of its characters and the relationships between them – it’s like it constantly assumed I must already be invested in these people in a way it never actually made me. The most egregious example of this is the chemistry between Frey and Cuff, which frames most of the campaign as a sort of buddy cop movie but spends almost no time showing these two unlikely partners grow closer after their introduction.

Actual bonding apparently happens off-screen, and this story – which is mostly told through exposition dumps between large stretches of open-world exploration – felt fairly rushed across the 15 hours it took me to beat the campaign as a result. That means the snippy banter between Cuff and Frey come off as obnoxious rather than endearing. Frey is surprisingly vocal about her disdain for most of the tasks Forspoken asks you to complete, and Cuff constantly belittles her for no good reason in a manner that I think is supposed to come off as friendly ribbing but instead feels like awkwardly watching a couple argue at a dinner party. This dynamic never really changes, even as Frey slowly goes through the motions of her predictable hero’s journey, and it is always exhausting.

Combat and parkour can be fun even if they never get too deep.

Forspoken is essentially split into two parts: talking to townsfolk and doing mundane side quests like feeding sheep or chasing cats in Cipal, and making your way to some specific point of interest on its absurdly large map to further the story. I don’t think the Cipal sections would have bothered me if conversations and cutscenes didn’t have such a stilted, strangely low-budget feel to them. The performances throughout can actually be quite good, even when the writing leans heavily into telling rather than showing – but none of it is ever very fun to listen to thanks to long, awkward pauses between lines and occasional crowd noise or background music that’s so loud it drowns out everything being said.

Between visits to Cipal, you’re generally given a target on your map and free rein to get as distracted as you’d like along the way. That involves sprinting across Athia’s rocky terrain using Frey’s magic parkour skills, flipping over obstacles and eventually using a grappling whip to swing long distances, and then beating the snot out of enemies at various points of interest for new equipment and other rewards. This is what you’ll be doing for the vast majority of your time with Forspoken, and it can be a lot of fun even if those systems never get too deep.

Frey gains four styles of elemental magic over the course of the campaign, each essentially a different weapon you can quickly swap between with its own set of alternate fire modes and unlockable support skills – all of which can then be modestly upgraded as you play. Her starting magic is basically an earth-based gun that can be fired rapidly or charged for an area-of-effect burst, with skills that root enemies to the ground, up your defense temporarily, and more. You don’t even have a melee attack until you unlock the fire-based sword option about a third of the way through the campaign, which was a little annoyingly restrictive at first.

But once you do open up more of Frey’s capabilities, Forspoken’s particle effect-filled combat becomes quite amusing. Enemy variety isn’t exactly impressive (special larger baddies in particular can be really cool the first time you fight them, but less so by the third), but elemental resistances and unique quirks pushed me to swap weapons and strategies frequently mid-fight in a way I really enjoyed. For example, I loved that shielded enemies could be dealt with either by getting behind them or by charging an AOE shot and then firing it at the ground nearby to knock them off their guard. One-on-one fights can devolve into locking onto your target and holding down the trigger while you strafe out of harm’s way with Forspoken’s extremely generous dodge system, but the group encounters often did a good job of keeping me on my toes.

Very little of Athia is worth stopping to admire.

Similarly, the parkour system is a mix of straightforward and flashy, sending you nimbly soaring across the environment by simply holding down the Circle button and pointing yourself in a given direction. Just like your attacks, this becomes a lot more fun once you unlock some cooler skills, like options that boost your speed with well-timed button presses. That said, it is also far more mindless than combat, requiring very little nuance even as additional techniques become available to you and rarely ever testing your mastery of those moves with difficult platforming challenges. Even still, it can be quite a satisfying way to fancifully flow from task to task without much thought.

That’s a good thing, too, because there is a considerable amount of ground to cover in Athia, and very little of it is worth stopping to admire. This world is huge, and the campaign doesn’t even send you near half of it. The map is littered with optional side objective markers, but there isn’t much reason to go too far off the beaten path to complete them when the same small handful of tasks are repeated ad nauseam no matter where they are placed. They almost all boil down to either fighting some random dudes to earn a reward or just being handed one outright, and the payoffs don’t feel particularly necessary unless you decide to up the difficulty to Hard. Plenty of open-world games follow a similar structure, but Forspoken does it with such a barebones transparency that Athia comes off less like a world for you to explore and more like a repetitive checklist asking to be crossed off.

It doesn’t help that Athia lacks much in the way of interesting visual landmarks, with different areas gated off by blatantly artificial mountain ranges and filled with piles of samey rocks and ruins to hop over. Each of the four regions offer a little twist to their layout, be that wide open fields or extra hills, but they’d still all blend together if it weren’t for the distinct color filter slapped onto each one. After the credits rolled I ran around this map for another dozen or so hours, hoping to find some exciting secrets in the hard-to-reach corners I hadn’t visited – but with the exception of an isolated trader selling a few neat items (literally the only NPC I met outside of Cipal), all I saw was the same side tasks on the same bland landscapes, over and over and over again. I’m sure there will be diehard completionists out there excited for a chance to put on a podcast and spend dozens of hours clearing every single map marker and opening every single chest (the kind of game I actually wrote about back in 2019), but I was given very little motivation to do so here.

The upside of that lack of urgency is that Forspoken’s progression systems mercifully don’t devolve into a grind on its Normal difficulty either, never forcing you to do anything you don’t want to. There are only three types of equipable items: cloaks, necklaces, and the charmingly creative nail polish designs. The first two are basically identical, increasing your health, defense, and magic while also offering special perks like increasing critical hit chance, while nails provide more unique boons like upping a specific type of magic. A light crafting system lets you upgrade your cloaks and necklaces by using resources you collect out in the field, increasing their stats and letting you swap in the perks of any gear you’ve found so far. That lends a lot of welcome flexibility to how you choose to play (and your fashion choices), but it’s also not the most exciting system since the majority of improvements are simple numerical boosts that are hard to see the effect of in the heat of battle.

  • World War Z: Aftermath’s Horde Mode XL update launches tomorrow

World War Z: Aftermath’s Horde Mode XL update launches tomorrow

    [ad_1]

If there’s one thing the World War Z game franchise is known for, it’s throwing massive hordes of zombies at you. We took that design philosophy to heart as we set to launch World War Z: Aftermath’s long-awaited Horde Mode XL update.

Launching tomorrow, Horde Mode XL is a new game mode that takes advantage of PlayStation 5’s power to put more blood-thirsty zombies on the screen at the same time than ever before, including the previous Horde Mode Z.

In the new mode, you and your friends will find yourselves in a new map where you must protect a civilian camp located inside a shopping mall.

There are three gameplay areas connected to this mall and each of them is a separate front line under the attack of zombie swarms seeking to reach the civilians

    • The Restaurant Area:  The swarm attacks from the temple and the village
    • The Riverside Area:  The swarm attacks from the city
    • The Construction Area: The swarm attacks from the factory

The rules are simple: survive as long as possible and prevent the zombies from getting to the civilians.

The core difference in the new mode is that some zombie waves will be “XL waves” with a mind-blowingly huge amount of zombies on the screen at the same time, and they’re all coming for you and your team.

To survive this onslaught, you have to stock up on supplies in order to launch enhanced defenses. These are unique events that trigger at the beginning of an XL wave if you’ve stored enough supplies and they slay a ton of zombies at once.

The more supplies you store, the deadlier your enhanced defenses will be. Enhanced defenses differ in each area: there are missiles in the Restaurant area, jet fighters in the Riverside area, and explosive gas at the Construction site.

Horde Mode XL also features other new gameplay features and surprises that we can’t wait for you to discover when you jump in.

    New weapon progression system

Horde Mode XL is not the only feature launching with this update.  The rest of the update includes the new weapon progression system and is available to both PS4 and PS5 players.

In the new system, skins are not tied to certain weapon stats.  While you still need experience points and supplies to level up your guns, leveling up is now done with linear stats progression (and unlocking different bonuses), while being able to apply any skin to a weapon.

One of the most significant new features are weapon perk slots that become available during progression. Every firearm has three slots where a unique set of perks can be inserted. Perks are divided into two categories based on their effectiveness: Unique and Common. Players can install only one Unique perk and two Common perks. Perks may affect stats or grant unique gameplay benefits, overall providing some flexibility in customizing your guns.

We’ve also created a host of new free skins for every gun that can be unlocked through its weapon progression system!

It’s also important to note for veteran WWZ: Aftermath players that your progression won’t be wiped with this update. For example, if you previously unlocked a gun’s 3rd version, this gun will now be upped to 3th level in the new weapon progression system; in terms of specs they will be identical. All previously unlocked skins will be available to you as well.

Horde Mode XL Update is only the beginning

We’re incredibly excited for you to jump into the Horde Mode XL update on January 24. The new Horde Mode XL game mode, revamped weapon progression system, new weapons ( Sai Knives and Tri-Barrel Shotgun), and new skins make for our biggest update yet.

This is only the beginning for World War Z: Aftermath. As you’ve continued to support this title, we’re going to do the same. Look out for more exciting updates in 2023.

  • Forspoken Review – Forsaken

    Forspoken Review – Forsaken

    [ad_1]

Though it takes inspiration from isekai–stories in which people from Earth are transported to and become trapped in a fantastical world (think Alice in Wonderland but Japanese)–Forspoken ultimately doesn’t understand what makes that genre so popular. Instead, it tells a largely forgettable story that sets up major stakes but fails to offer a compelling reason for why the player should care. Luminous Productions’ action-RPG feels great when it allows you to really stretch your legs and magically parkour across its fantasy landscape, but combat is clunky and regular exposition too often stalls the action.

In Forspoken, protagonist Frey finds herself trapped in the magic-filled world of Atheia after stumbling through a portal. There, she bonds with a sentient brace she nicknames Cuff and then encounters a group of survivors living in the last city that’s free from the effects of a dangerous miasma. This blight, which Frey calls the Break, covers the land and transforms living creatures into mutated monsters. Frey is the only exception, making her an ideal candidate for exploring the Break, finding its source, and destroying it. The whole situation is an intriguing narrative set-up but boring or unlikable characters let it down. It’s difficult to like the standoffish and stubborn Frey, the incessantly sarcastic Cuff (who regularly quips in Frey’s ear like a discount JARVIS), or any of the survivors who are all too eager to completely rely on Frey’s protection from the Break while also asking her to complete boring optional tasks like going on a tour of a lifeless hub or petting a bunch of sheep.

Forspoken’s story is one about belonging–finding a place you want to stay and a people you wish to protect. Like any isekai protagonist worth their salt, Frey is initially resistant to her new surroundings before discovering that she’s actually ideally suited to the world she’s found herself trapped in. However, it’s not a world that the game is able to adequately convince the player of wanting to stay in and protect. The emotional connection Forspoken tries to establish to incentivize the player to take action–to help the people that need Frey’s help–is deeply uninteresting and oftentimes head-scratching and odd. The characters don’t take the threat of Atheia’s imminent destruction very seriously and any tension that comes from their perilous existence is repeatedly undermined by meaningless busywork they want you to do. The characters themselves are also incredibly plain with two-dimensional personalities. They have no real convictions or anything interesting to say.

The facial expressions of the people in Atheia are stilted and uncomfortable, which already creates a bit of a disconnect with the emotional core of Forspoken’s story. But the issue is exasperated by how these people are characterized and used to inspire Frey. We see Frey contemplate murderous vengeance over the death of a survivor she’d only just met, and feel guilty over belittling someone she has the slimmest of connections to. These people aren’t fleshed out in Forspoken’s story, and so the way they emotionally manipulate Frey isn’t all that believable or fulfilling to watch. My playthrough was filled with me constantly asking, “Yes, but why should Frey care?” and Forspoken never delivered a satisfying answer to the question.

With not much keeping you within the last bastion of human life in Atheia, you’re encouraged to go out and explore the wider world, sprinting over fields with Frey’s parkour abilities and blasting enemies away with explosive magic. Frey zips through the environment with stylish flips and jumps, moving so quickly that she skids to a halt. This does create an enjoyable fluidity to movement and it’s exhilarating to feel the world speed past you. Still, the lack of precision makes platforming or levels within enclosed spaces frustratingly difficult. More than a few times, I found myself accidentally jetting past an item I wanted to pick up, or unintentionally racing up the wall of a building. Technically, you can instantly shut off Frey’s magical parkour by pressing the button that puts her into a normal sprint–apparently, the two actions cancel each other out because using them both at once causes Frey to come to an abrupt halt. It’s an awkward workaround to the problem, however, and not one easy to pull off in the midst of a fight.

Whereas Forspoken’s movement mechanics encourage a wilder, freeform style of engaging with the world, combat pushes you toward precision. There’s a precise timing needed to pull off dodges and parries, and several of Frey’s magic spells lend themselves to careful placement and strategic use–that’s difficult to do when racing around the environment. As a result, Forspoken feels disjointed as the moments of exploration and navigation come into conflict with combat. Instead of complementing each other, these two parts of the game are actively fighting one another. They never come together into a cohesive whole.

Frey can let loose a wide variety of bombastic spells and magical abilities, all of which are visually impressive displays. She can crush enemies with massive boulders, engulf whole groups in a molten eruption, or fry everything around her with brilliant green lightning. It all looks very cool, but there’s not much in the way of strategy to it. Cuff can inform Frey what flavor of her magic is most effective against a particular enemy, and then all you have to do is switch to that element and keep tossing out attacks. Early into the game, you encounter enemy types that encourage you to think a bit beyond that–enemies who can block magic from the front or foes who can’t be damaged until you destroy their wings, for example–but they only really appear in the first quarter of the story. After that, most enemies are bullet sponges designed to create challenge in how much of a magical beating they can take. It’s not hard to switch magic types to mindlessly exploit weaknesses and so combat–though visually impressive–quickly loses all sense of enjoyment.

Forspoken’s movement is far more fun, especially in the latter half of the game when you start unlocking and chaining new mechanics that increase the variety of ways that Frey can journey across Atheia, like slingshotting herself through the air with a flaming whip or manipulating gravity to skate across the water. Even if there’s nowhere interesting to go in Forspoken–its open world is dotted with an assortment of run-of-the-mill side quests like time-limited parkour challenges and photo ops–there’s fun to be had in the act of simply getting to your next main story mission. The quiet hum of Forspoken’s excellent soundtrack worms its way into your ears while you’re racing through the empty, yet beautiful, landscapes. I’m absentmindedly humming its main theme even now.

Exposition regularly cuts into the experience, however. Frey and Cuff quip a lot, and though Cuff does have a few humorous one-liners and insightful commentary on the world of Atheia over the course of the story, Frey…does not. Frey is one of the weakest parts of Forspoken. Her characterization resembles the narrative arc of ’90s and early 2000s isekai light novels, manga, and anime, which largely focused on female protagonists becoming trapped in another world. There, they’d discover their innate talents translated into power, which they’d wield in a quest that awarded them personal agency and self-confidence. But Frey deviates from these isekai protagonists. She’s inherently unlikable for most of Forspoken’s story, with the game forcing her through her transformation from selfish sorcerer to defiant hero over the course of a single chapter of lengthy exposition. I didn’t buy into her heroic shift in the final moments of the game–it felt like the storyline was going through the motions without taking the necessary steps to ensure Frey’s emotional and mental development made sense.

As a character, Frey feels flat. Our introduction to her is seeing her on the wrong side of a criminal court case, and that she views the world around her with jaded exasperation–she pushes people away because she’s an abandoned orphan and believes no one wants her. Frey carries that disposition throughout most of the game and it’s the primary means by which she views every aspect of Atheia, and thus we the player are able to see it. Forspoken doesn’t do anything to celebrate Frey as someone who is Black or a woman or anything else about her. The game posits that the only perspective worth noting from Frey is that of an orphan and that restriction not only stunts the character growth she can achieve, it also just gets stale after a few hours.

Forspoken is a tricky game to recommend. The lore of its world is interesting but delivered in a stilted expository manner, and the freeing sensation of taking off across the landscape in a magically-propelled sprint is sullied by the knowledge that there’s nowhere to go or anything fun to do. Combat is visually impressive but not all that engaging, and the excellent sound design and the catchy musical score are regularly undermined by unfunny quips from an unlikable protagonist. I enjoyed parts of it, but too often my fun was dragged to an unrewarding halt.

  • Dead Space preload times and Trophy List unveiled, revealing alternate ending

Dead Space preload times and Trophy List unveiled, revealing alternate ending

    [ad_1]

The long-awaited remake of cult classic, Dead Space, is right around the corner, with it releasing on January 17. With that in mind and just a few days to go, the preload times for the game have been announced, and its Trophy List unveiled.

Take a peek at the official launch trailer for Dead Space here.

Those of us who are keen to board the USG Ishimura once again and experience one of the best horror games of all time in a new light have some good news.

Players using Xbox Series X/S to play the Dead Space remake can preload the game from 8AM PT / 4PM GMT on January 20, which means you can preload it right now! Those on PlayStation 5 and PC, however, will need to wait a few days longer and can preload their copy of the game from 8AM PT / 4PM GMT on January 25.

The Trophy List for the Dead Space remake was unveiled just a few days ago, too, and with it came some interesting revelations. First and foremost, achieving Platinum in Dead Space isn’t going to be an easy feat by any means. You’ll need to complete the game with the hardest difficulty, and complete it again in New Game Plus.

On top of that, you’ll also need to upgrade every weapon, and kill dozens upon dozens of enemies with each of them. Oh, and let’s not forget, you’ll need to dismember lots of limbs, also.

What is fascinating, however, is the achievement named ‘Reunion’, which reveals that Dead Space will have an alternate ending. EA and developer, Motive Studio, have made no mention of this whatsoever, but it’s present in the Trophy List, so we can only assume that the ending itself is meant to be a surprise.

This achievement was not available in the original game, so this is something additional for Dead Space fans to look forward to this coming weekend.

If you’re yet to pre-order the title, you can bag yourself a pretty sweet deal over on Steam. Those pre-ordering Dead Space will also get access to Dead Space 2 for free, so you can keep busy long after having raced to collect all those trophies.

Wordle hint and answer today: Let’s solve #583, January 23

Start your Wordle (opens in new tab) week with a win: read our helpful daily clue if you’d just like a little hint, take a look at our guides if you’d like to improve your game in general, and don’t worry if you’re one guess away from oblivion—you’ll find the answer to the January 23 (583) Wordle just a quick scroll or click away.

I had a close but very satisfying call today. The answer only came together on the very last attempt, as those usually helpful green boxes were largely absent. A nice early win is less stressful, but definitively snatching victory from the jaws of defeat can’t be beat.

    About Animal Simulator:

I usually don’t review games where I tend to be too lazy, but I believe this idea has good potential to be amazing. I see it similar to GTA mixed with WolfQuest. Don’t expect something polished instantly, this game was not created by a big company who has millions to spend such as GTA V. This game is impressive and I will support them in anyway I am able. For me, it all comes down to how much the developers aspire in creating the best product possible to their ability. It is not the game quality/state right now that matters (being in a alpha state) so much as developer’s aspirations and care for their creation. In the video game era now with early access, a good developer is key in determining if a game will succeed or crash.

Animal Simulator Free Auto Farm Gui Roblox Scripts I have played quite a few games where the first release was terrible and after 2 years improves drastically. The key thing to remember here is GIVE IT TIME. Don’t hate on it and review just anger remarks, give constructive criticism to help the developers improve their product. Even if you believe it should be obvious on multiple issues in game and other players have stated such, adding more inputs gives them statistics of the player base to the issue and how much it impacts their game play. As all alpha games are, they are meant for feedback and not so much a fluid game as of yet.

    About Jailbreak:

Well, it’s definitely a game at least. I’m a huge fan of exploring lesser-known ‘simulator’ games like this, but at least a majority of the others look like they’ve had some amount of effort put in. Of the 20 or so minutes I played of this game I think I played to the fullest extent. The gameplay consists of nothing more than collecting prisoners, walking around in a huge mass while attacking guards and collecting items to build a bomb. After a couple of rounds it just gets repetitive, the prisoners all spawn in the same spot doing the same thing, the traps are all the same and the guards only consist of two variants so there’s little to no replay value in this game at all.

Jailbreak Hotbar Auto Sorter Gui Redesign Roblox Scripts I spent this summer with one of the developers of Jailbreak Lockdown, and he was honestly one of the most chill and genuine people I know. He cared very much about the game he worked on during our internship, and I know this game is made with the same amount of love and effort. I’ve had the opportunity to play the game early in the testing phase, and back then even in its rougher shape, it was a blast to play with a few friends. There’s a large number of different paths to take to escape, and for the guard it feels like a frantic game of diner dash, with a massive feeling of relief if you can catch the prisoner.

  • TV’s most comforting show confronts despair like only it can

TV’s most comforting show confronts despair like only it can

    [ad_1]

This week’s episode of All Creatures Great and Small — the third episode of the third season, entitled “Surviving Siegfried” — offered something rare for this series: flashbacks.

The show, adapted from the internationally bestselling series of memoirs by veterinary surgeon Alf Wight, who wrote under the pen name James Herriot, has thus far been situated squarely within the late 1930s in the sleepy English farming community of Darrowby, a fictionalized corner of the Yorkshire Dales where 21st-century viewers might burrow away for an hour a week and let their troubles be replaced by gentle tales of rural animal care. The series centers on veterinary surgeon James (Nicholas Ralph), who toils under the watchful eye of the persnickety Siegfried Farnon (Samuel West), whom he struggles to please — though not as much as Siegfried’s layabout brother, Tristan (Callum Woodhouse), does.

All of these figures are familiar to readers of Herriot’s books. But they first became staples of the TV landscape in 1978, when the BBC premiered the first serialized adaptation of All Creatures Great and Small. To call the new series a remake of the prior one would be inapt, as both take their own liberties in adapting Herriot’s books. But in Siegfried’s awareness of the traumas of war, the two series do feature remarkable echoes. Two iterations of the same man are both beset by the same righteous world-weariness, one that would have resonated just as clearly four decades ago as it does today.

“Surviving Siegfried” transports the viewer to Belgium in 1918, a schism in the series’ typical operations that underscores just how present the First World War remains in the consciousness of characters now facing down the Second. There, a younger version of the typically jovially eccentric Siegfried — played in these segments by Andy Sellers, and now seen as a solemn captain in the Royal Armed Forces around the time of Armistice Day — is tasked with caring for his major’s wounded horse.

“Physically speaking, he’ll make a full recovery,” this younger version of Siegfried remarks of the animal. But there’s another, perhaps even greater wound: “the damage we can’t see.”

    Image: PBS Masterpiece

In the show’s present, another war looms, casting a shadow over a series that has previously struck a comforting note of escapism. Jeeps pass the car as Siegfried shuttles between Darrowby and the outlying farms; the previous season closed with his housekeeper, Mrs. Hall (Anna Madeley) watching a spitfire strafe the sky. Now, Siegfried has been called upon to care for another traumatized horse — River, who will not be ridden — and though the oncoming brutality has not yet touched these particular creatures, its specter dominates the season.

“Are you all right?” Tristan asks the obstinate vet while driving him back to see River. Siegfried himself has been thrown from the horse so many times he can barely walk, let alone operate a vehicle.

“That’s a stupid bloody question!” Siegfried snaps. “Of course I’m not! None of us is! Nor should we be! State of the damn world — there’d be something wrong with us if we were!” The line fits the character and story, but it might well strike a chord for present-day viewers as well. How many of us can truly feel all right given the state of our own damn world? Thus, the gently antic All Creatures Great and Small must balance its status as a comforting tonic to a messy and painful 21st century and its awareness of the fact that the world has always been more complex than any of us would prefer.

The world was no less complex and painful 43 years ago this month, when the BBC premiered the third season of the original televised All Creatures Great and Small. The season aired less than a year into Margaret Thatcher’s term as Prime Minister (the run of the original series would match up with her 11 years in office to within a year), amid a time of tremendous unrest in the United Kingdom, a nation still reeling from a year of unprecedented strikes, the peak of which would be retrospectively termed the Winter of Discontent.

Siegfried stands next to Ms. H, who has crossed arms, in All Creatures Great and Small

    Image: PBS Masterpiece

That season’s fifth episode, titled “If Wishes Were Horses,” serves as a parallel to, if not the basis for, “Surviving Siegfried.” Again, we see Siegfried (here played by Robert Hardy) caring for a horse, though this time the infection is of the hoof as opposed to River’s spiritual malady. Siegfried is in his element dealing with the creature, and even leaves the operation feeling giddy. “Summer’s morning in an English village,” he beams. “Nothing like it.”

“Not if you’ve got time to appreciate it,” James (Christopher Timothy) agrees.

But the bliss is swiftly shattered by the news that two local boys are off to join up with the RAF themselves. “I reckon it’s their duty,” the boys’ father remarks, but Siegfried is visibly shaken. “The politicians have failed,” he mutters as the boys head off to enlist. “Now it’s up to people like them… to pick up the pieces.”

“If Wishes Were Horses” aired in January 1980, just a few weeks after Britain’s steel workers walked off the job for the first time in more than half a century. That strike would last 13 weeks, ending just a few days before the third season of All Creatures Great and Small did, the world’s wintertime discontent once more forming a bracing contrast with a gentle series. The finale, which bid these characters adieu for the eight years that elapsed before the fourth season, ends on the image of Siegfried and James off to enlist as well. “Nothing’s certain anymore,” Siegfried murmurs toward the end of the episode.

The same could be said of the world into which the third season of All Creatures Great and Small has premiered, as we enter the fourth year of the COVID-19 pandemic, and amid a rising tide of global fascism that’s becoming normalized with shocking swiftness. The series premiered in September 2020, less than a year into the pandemic, and while it might be a bit convenient to suggest James Herriot and his comic entourage emerge during these moments of widespread despair to guide us toward something like hope… Well, if the horseshoe fits.

Siegfried in All Creatures Great & Small rides a white horse next to a black one.

    Image: PBS Masterpiece

In Belgium, we learn, Siegfried was forced to oversee the mass slaughter of horses deemed essentially worthless once they were finished carrying soldiers into battle. Now called upon by his onetime commanding officer to do the same to River, a racehorse that won’t race (“Good for nought but dog food,” an onlooker grumbles as Siegfried tries to tame the wild thing), Siegfried puts his foot down.

“Surely we don’t need to repeat the mistakes and cruelties of the past!” he begs this man he still calls Major. When the older man gruffly asks how many times he’s willing to be thrown off, Siegfried responds with certainty: “As many as it takes.”

Siegfried refers to his determination to help River, but his resolve is more generalized. When asked to break the horse, he informs the major that his job is, in fact, to put the animal back together again. It’s the same task we all wake up to every day: the need to play what little role we can in reassembling a world that feels like it’s breaking so quickly the pieces might crumble in your hands.

“We’ll have to come to terms with it, Siegfried,” James tells his partner in the original series. “There really is no other way.”

“You’re right, of course,” Siegfried agrees. “The human animal is the most wonderfully adaptable of all.” It’s unclear whether Siegfried believes his own words. He seems quite close to tears when he says it. But “Surviving Siegfried” ends on something closer to catharsis: River allows himself to be ridden. The major’s horse is saved.

In one flashback segment found toward the middle of “Surviving Siegfried,” we learn that only one horse returned from Belgium: the major’s personal steed. The writers chose to name the horse Orpheus, and their reasoning would seem clear. Like Siegfried himself, this creature — so great and yet so small — has walked into hell. Now, his task is to reemerge without looking back.

All Creatures Great and Small is available to watch on PBS Masterpiece.

  • The Last Of Us Star Anna Torv On That Horrific Episode 2 Climax

The Last Of Us Star Anna Torv On That Horrific Episode 2 Climax

    [ad_1]

The second episode of HBO’s The Last of Us has arrived, putting a bit of a spin on events from the game as the journey for Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) truly begins. In last week’s episode, we got what essentially amounted to a prologue for the story–from the death of Sarah (Nico Parker) to Joel and Tess (Anna Torv) meeting Ellie for the first time. Now, the danger of this world is high as ever, something that was very apparent in the second episode.

Warning: The following contains spoilers for The Last of Us Episode 2. If you still need to catch up on HBO’s adaptation of the Naughty Dog game franchise, stop now and head over to HBO Max to watch first.

Now Playing: The Last of Us Episode 1 Breakdown | The Chat With Us

In the new episode, Joel, Ellie, and Tess make it out of the quarantine zone and into the city of Boston. Of course, that doesn’t come without its share of problems–or clickers, rather–and the climax of the episode finds viewers losing one of the show’s heroes.

As Joel, Ellie, and Tess attempt to escape a building being descended on by a horde of clickers, Tess realizes that both she and Ellie have been bitten. The difference she sees between them, though, is that the infection Tess has is getting worse, while Ellie’s isn’t. Suddenly, what seemed impossible–Ellie being immune to the outbreak–becomes a small sign of hope for the future of humanity.

“She gets bit and Ellie does too, and she looks and she goes, ‘Oh my god, this is real; this is what people keep talking about.’ Surely there has to be a cure; surely there has to be an antidote,” Torv told GameSpot, TV Guide, and Metacritic. “She says it all at the end: ‘This is real, Joel. This is real and this is potentially your chance to have the world forgive us for all the s***ty things we’ve done. This is it. Save what you can save.’”

And to that end, Torv sacrifices herself, having Joel and Ellie escape while she blows up the building–and the clicker infestation within. It’s a bit of a spin on what happens in the games. There, Tess dies while killing soldiers coming after Joel and Ellie, which is still quite the sacrifice.

“I think she truly believes that [she’s doing her part to save the world],” Torv said.

Of course, in doing so, she was also subjected to one of the worst things ever shown on TV when a clicker sprouted cordyceps from its mouth into Tess’s, making for the worst kiss of all time. Of course, don’t be too freaked out. While the scene was horrifying for Torv, the grossest parts were digital effects.

“It’s just revolting. I thought it was going to be different. That scene, when I read it, I thought it was going to be a very different thing, and the answer is all of that is effects except the guy,” she said. “As far as the infected goes, a lot of it was makeup–pretty amazing makeup–but all of the tendrils and all the rest of it is all special effects.”

In the end, while we’ve said goodbye to Tess at this point, it’s entirely possible we haven’t seen the last of her. After all, there could always be flashbacks to the 20 years between the outbreak and the current day. If this was her final bow, though, there’s now a much more memorable way to exit the series.

The Last of Us airs Sundays on HBO.

  • The No-Fly List Has Been Leaked, TSA Investigating ‘Cybersecurity Incident’

The No-Fly List Has Been Leaked, TSA Investigating ‘Cybersecurity Incident’

    [ad_1]

The Transportation Security Administration’s No-Fly List is one of the most important ledgers in the United States, containing as it does the names of people who are perceived to be of such a threat to national security that they’re not allowed on airplanes. You’d have been forgiven then for thinking that list was a tightly-guarded state secret, but lol, nope.

A Swiss hacker known as “maia arson crimew” has got hold of a copy of the list—albeit a version from a few years ago—not by getting past fortress-like layers of cybersecurity, but by…finding a regional airline that had its data lying around in unprotected servers. They announced the discovery with the photo and screenshot above, in which the Pokémon Sprigatito is looking awfully pleased with themselves.

As they explain in a blog post detailing the process, crimew was poking around online when they found that CommuteAir’s servers were just sitting there:

like so many other of my hacks this story starts with me being bored and browsing shodan (or well, technically zoomeye, chinese shodan), looking for exposed jenkins servers that may contain some interesting goods. at this point i’ve probably clicked through about 20 boring exposed servers with very little of any interest, when i suddenly start seeing some familar words. “ACARS”, lots of mentions of “crew” and so on. lots of words i’ve heard before, most likely while binge watching Mentour Pilot YouTube videos. jackpot. an exposed jenkins server belonging to CommuteAir.

Among other “sensitive” information on the servers was “NOFLY.CSV”, which hilariously was exactly what it says on the box: “The server contained data from a 2019 version of the federal no-fly list that included first and last names and dates of birth,” CommuteAir Corporate Communications Manager Erik Kane told the Daily Dot, who worked with crimew to sift through the data. “In addition, certain CommuteAir employee and flight information was accessible. We have submitted notification to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and we are continuing with a full investigation.”

That “employee and flight information” includes, as crimew writes:

grabbing sample documents from various s3 buckets, going through flight plans and dumping some dynamodb tables. at this point i had found pretty much all PII imaginable for each of their crew members. full names, addresses, phone numbers, passport numbers, pilot’s license numbers, when their next linecheck is due and much more. i had trip sheets for every flight, the potential to access every flight plan ever, a whole bunch of image attachments to bookings for reimbursement flights containing yet again more PII, airplane maintenance data, you name it.

The government is now investigating the leak, with the TSA telling the Daily Dot they are aware of a potential cybersecurity incident, and we are investigating in coordination with our federal partners”.

If you’re wondering just how many names are on the list, it’s hard to tell. Crimew tells Kotaku that in this version of the records “there are about 1.5 million entries, but given a lot are different aliases for different people it’s very hard to know the actual number of unique people on it” (a 2016 estimate had the numbers at “2,484,442 records, consisting of 1,877,133 individual identities”).

Interestingly, given the list was uploaded to CommuteAir’s servers in 2022, it was assumed that was the year the records were from. Instead, crimew tells me “the only reason we [now] know [it] is from 2019 is because the airline keeps confirming so in all their press statements, before that we assumed it was from 2022.”

You can check out crimew’s blog here, while the Daily Dot post—which says names on the list include members of the IRA and an eight year-old—is here.

  • Marvel’s Avengers Is Ending Development, Giving Away Cosmetics

Marvel’s Avengers Is Ending Development, Giving Away Cosmetics

    [ad_1]

    Image: Marvel’s Avengers

This may come as a surprise to the players who abandoned the game long ago and assumed this time had come already, but Crystal Dynamics and publishers Square Enix have announced the impending end of online support for Marvel’s Avengers.

In a blog post published on Friday evening, a latter signed by ‘Marvel’s Avengers Development Team’ reads in part:

    To our amazing community,

After two-and-a-half years and introducing twelve of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, following Update 2.8 on March 31, 2023, we will no longer add new content or features to Marvel’s Avengers. All official support for the game will end on September 30, 2023.

Even after official support ceases on September 30, 2023, both single- and multi-player gameplay will continue to be available…

…As a show of our appreciation for our community, starting March 31, 2023 we will make all the game’s Marketplace, Challenge Card, and Shipment cosmetic content available to all players for free. Every single Outfit, Takedown, Emote, and Nameplate from the Marketplace, Challenge Cards, and Shipments will be free for all players from this date onwards if you own a copy of the game.

Gifting the full library of Marketplace cosmetic content is a way to thank our community by letting everyone experience the breadth and depth of content in Marvel’s Avengers.

We know this is disappointing news as everyone in our community has such a connection to these characters and their stories. We’re so, so grateful that you came on this adventure with us. Your excitement for Marvel’s Avengers – from your epic Photo Mode shots, to your threads theorizing who our next Heroes would be, to your Twitch streams – has played a large part in bringing this game to life.

We hope you continue to play and enjoy Marvel’s Avengers. We can’t thank you enough for your support and for being part of our super team.

    – Marvel’s Avengers Development Team

While the opening up of the game’s Marketplace is framed here as a gesture of goodwill, it is of course that same marketplace—shackled as it was to some insane notion that every game needs to be a Forever Game, reliant on the grind inherent to a live service experience—that helped kill it off. ‘

While Embracer made a deal last year to buy the game’s developers, severing them from the publisher that made the Avengers licensing deal, it was made clear at the time that any games released prior to the sale would continue to be supported. Which suggests this decision is simply down to not enough people wanting to play or buy stuff in Marvel’s Avengers anymore.

As the note says, this doesn’t mean the game is disappearing off the internet entirely. You’ll still be able to play it, even in multiplayer; there just won’t be any further updates or even technical support for it after September 30.

If you’re a player and want to see the specifics of what’s shutting down when, and what this means for individual updates, you can check that out here in a series of charts and FAQs. One of which contains the deeply funny reminder that Spider-Man must remain a PlayStation exclusive, even in death.

Apex Legends Ranked Player Becomes Apex Champion in the Weirdest Way Possible

    [ad_1]

    News

Pathfinder stocks are rising after this win.

Apex Legends is in the middle of a “reinvention” of sorts, as developer Respawn Entertainment has addressed community concern over matchmaking trends. Announced earlier this week, the Titanfall developer shared that the old matchmaking method is being retired in favor of a balanced approach. No timetable was announced on how long it would take for said implementations to kick in, but it seems to already be in place as one player found themselves in the most balanced match of Ranked to date.

In a post to Reddit made by MasantZA on Jan. 21, it was revealed that they’d been placed in a match without any other players. This led to an immediate win on their part, leaving them baffled at the strange turn of events.

Of course, the matchmaking changes do not relate to this bug, but it’s still a funny moment as the poster becomes Apex Champion in a matter of seconds. One burning question viewers had was if the player affected by the bug received RP (ranked points) for this game, to which the player in question did receive points. While this is most certainly not a frequent bug, a few others shared their stories and the rewards netted. As the age-old adage goes, a win’s a win, with this win bumping up Pathfinder’s win rate by a slight margin.

Those interested in seeing the full series of events play out can do so via the video down below.

Apex Legends is in its fifteenth season of content, introducing a new legend, Catalyst, map, and extra changes to the core loop. For all the latest coverage related to the season’s content, check out the related articles down below.
