  • New Frostrail video delivers more survival train horror shooting plus weird underground Tomb Raider temples

    [ad_1]

I’ve felt surprisingly mixed so far about Frostrail, the new first-person co-op horror survival game from the folks behind Barotrauma. As a rule, I’m keen on stories about awful apocalypse trains – see Metro Exodus, RailGods, and recent Julian favourite Fogpiercer – but Frostrail has hitherto seemed a bit generic. Certainly, a bit generic for a game from the people who made a game that inspired write-ups like this one.

The announcement trailer suggested a dowdy routine of chugging between resource spots and shooting a few dozen ice zombies while backpedalling towards your upgradeable locomotive. Thankfully, this week’s new gameplay overview adds a few layers of mystique, delving into catacombs where the vegetation is lusher, the architecture a bit Tomb Raidery, and the horror, less explicable. You’ll get into certain of these sunken spaces by way of abandoned churches, which reminded me a little of the altar puzzle in Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs. Anyway, here’s the video.

    Watch on YouTube

I can’t knock the game’s backstory writing. “Once a mighty empire, the land now lies barren, consumed by an unrelenting cold,” explains the Steam page. “Twisted by the Emperor’s pact with the Void, its ruins are haunted by relentless revenants and eldritch horrors. Aboard an armored, steam-powered train, the Penitent Gardeners purge the land of the cursed, granting mercy to the lost and striking down the wicked, seeking salvation in the heart of the frozen desolation.”

Yes! I have always wanted to be a Penitent Gardener, and not just the everyday, lower-case kind who forgets to sow the potatoes in time and hack back the raspberries before the winter.

Frostrail is out in early access sometime this year. If you missed Barotrauma for lack of an appropriately tenacious and twitchy submarine crew (yes, I’m aware you can play with bots), Frostrail appears more singleplayer-friendly in that it is openly marketed as for “solo or co-op”. Still, we won’t know for sure till we play it.

Question for the thread: who would win, trains or submarines? The answer, of course, is: we shouldn’t have to choose.

  • Where Winds Meet Hexi Expansion Showcase — Everything Announced – IGN

    [ad_1]

Where Winds Meet is taking us back to “one of China’s most glorious eras,” the Tang Dynasty, with its next major update, the Hexi expansion, which kicks off, for free, on March 5.

Between March and May, the team will release Hexi’s three chapters in sequence, taking wanderers “from desert to ice fields to grasslands,” starting with Jade Gate Pass next week.

“In ancient China, friends would write poems for each other. Think of these three chapters as our poem to all of you,” the team explained, stressing that this marks “a much more cinematic approach to storytelling” that feels “quite different from our previous storytelling.”

Set in a vast desert landscape, developer Everstone Games said the Hexi expansion represents the “biggest expansion since the game’s launch, and will offer up brand-new narratives, new bosses, fresh gameplay features, and martial art styles.” We can expect three major maps, which, combined, boast nearly 20 sub-regions, 11 unique bosses, seven Jianghu Legacies, “dozens” of side quests, and “so much more.” There’s also a new path called Bamboocut-Dust, with two new martial arts for Umbrella and Roped Dart. Umbrella’s Spring Dreamscape is “all about agility,” while Rope Dart’s Fleeting Clouds is “all about big, sweeping AOE attacks.”

The stream showed off some of those aforementioned boss fights in detail;, including Jade Gate Pass’ campaign boss, Guo Xin, the aging general and last grand protector who “remains at his post defending the land to the very end.” He’ll come at you with “sweeping combos and summon veterans to fight alongside him,” so you’ll need to use your deflects wisely to protect against his attacks. His second phase, on the other hand, boasts “sands swirl and time reverses” as the call of his army “jostles him back to his prime,” enabling him to unleash his full power.

We also get a sneak peek at Wandering Ark, which, I’m delighted to say, is exactly what it sounds like — a huge ship. Once a messenger, it’s now obsessed with finding its way home through the desert. If you hang on after the main presentation finishes, there’s also a good chunk of the battle against Hexi’s Moongazing Maiden boss fight, too, where all the skills and weapons are related to the moon.

While the stream focused primarily on the desert, we also paid fleeting visits to the upcoming Liangzhou and Qingchuan maps, too. The former is a city known for its fine wine and precious jade in our first snow mountain region, and the latter, your final destination, where you’ll cycle through all four seasons on one map and find warring factions everywhere you turn.

Best of all, though, Everstone stressed that all your progress carries over from season to season, including character levels, talents, and arsenals, so there’s “no need to start from scratch.”

As for goodies? Here’s just some of what you can expect:

    • 30+ Lingering Melody
    • 90+ Resonating Melody (includes pulls obtained via free Echo Jade earned through exploration)
    • 100+ Appearances and items
    • Win exclusive Whirl of Radiance outfit (obtained through exploration)
    • 100+ Exquisite Rewards, including Appearances like Burlap Sack, Bride’s Bloom, War Drum and more, the White-Headed General Avatar, the Radiant Horizons Nameplate, and the Who Else? And Pluck Stars Emotes

That’s not all! Everstone also revealed a slew of new quality-of-life updates, too, which we’ve summarized below:

  • Netflix Abandons Warner Bros. Buyout, Paving Way For Paramount Takeover

    [ad_1]

Late last year, Netflix struck a deal with Warner Bros. to purchase most of the company’s assets for $82 billion. Now, Netflix has chosen to abandon that deal rather than match the higher offer made by Paramount. That paves the way for Paramount to become the new owner of Warner Bros. Discovery, pending stockholder and regulatory approval.

For the better part of two months, Warner Bros. refused to engage with Paramount, which briefly led the latter to file a lawsuit against the rival studio. Earlier this month, Netflix granted Warner Bros. a one-week period to reopen negotiations with Paramount. The Warner Bros. board subsequently decided that Paramount’s higher offer was the better deal, and Netflix declined to keep bidding.

“We believe we would have been strong stewards of Warner Bros.’ iconic brands, and that our deal would have strengthened the entertainment industry and preserved and created more production jobs in the US,” said Netflix co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters in a statement (via The Hollywood Reporter). But this transaction was always a ‘nice to have’ at the right price, not a ‘must have’ at any price.”

  • We Are So Cooked Trailer Turns Hiding A Dead Body Into A Cozy Co-op Game

    [ad_1]

The trailer for We Are So Cooked, a nice, cozy co-op physics stealth game about trying to hide a dead body with your friends, dropped today after the game went viral for its premise earlier this month.  The trailer does a good job of highlighting the particular challenges of trying to stealthily remove a dead body from a busy hotel, from abundant security cameras to the body’s floppiness. The game, which comes from indie developers Dwarven Brothers, premiered its trailer on Geoff Keighley’s X account and The Game Awards Instagram.

Though the game is technically playable solo, individual players will face extra challenges. According to We Are So Cooked‘s Steam page, “dragging the body alone is slow and leaves a bloody trail,” and “You can hold an item, OR you can drag the body. You can’t do both. You’ll have to scream at your friends to open doors for you.” Co-op play doesn’t guarantee an easier path to victory, though: you’ll have to dodge security guards, dogs, and other hotel guests while trying to navigate down stairs and around corners with an awkward, heavy dead body that seems determined to slip out of your hands. You’ll have to come up with a solid plan and work together carefully to avoid dropping the body—the description warns that “if you pull left and your friend pulls right, you’re going to drop him down the stairs.”

We Are So Cooked‘s lighthearted approach to manslaughter is a nice respite from co-op games with heavier themes, like Hazelight Studios’ fun-looking but actually harrowingly grim divorce game It Takes Two. At least you and your fellow players are on the same page in this one. We Are So Cooked is set to release sometime in 2026.

    [ad_1]

In the latest example of ‘I don’t understand business,’ Splash Damage, which just three months ago made major layoffs so it could “remain agile and adaptable in what has been a very challenging market,” has acquired Gamepires, the maker of the open world survival game Scum.

The acquisition, backed by Emona Capital and part of “a refreshed strategic direction,” will see the two studios combined into the Splash Damage Group, which “focus on expanding its premium development and co-development partnerships in conjunction with scaling the Scum franchise and investing in new IP.” Former Splash Damage chief financial officer Ben Hopkinson will take the reins as CEO.

  • Colony sim Going Medieval, aka friendlier Rimworld, hits 1.0 release in March after 16 major updates

    [ad_1]

Colony sim and city builder Going Medieval will leave early access on 12th March, at which point it will presumably be retitled Gone Medieval. Yes, this is the sort of joke that ought to get you imprisoned – imprisonment being one of many features added to Going Medieval since the winter of 2021, when Sin described it as “a buildier, friendlier Rimworld spinoff”.

Other elements introduced over the long, increasingly Medieval years include fire, water, siege weapons, and a trading system. The 1.0 launch will bring “a proper endgame, wonderful improvements, new content, and a lot of achievements”, write developers Foxy Voxel on Steam. God be praised! Break out the good wine, slaughter the prize calf and let the trumpets ring from the battlements! Here’s a trailer.

  • The Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered restores lost content and demo, out March 3

    [ad_1]

When players return to Nosgoth in Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered on PS4 and PS5, they are not only revisiting a defining chapter of the saga, but are also stepping into one that was never released.

Included with the definitive edition of Defiance Remastered is a playable demo of The Dark Prophecy, the unfinished sixth entry in the Legacy of Kain series. For years, this project existed only in fragments, remembered through concept art and early development materials. Now, players can experience a preserved segment of that lost chapter firsthand.

The demo is presented as a historical artifact rather than a reimagining. Freely explore its tone, environment direction, and early gameplay ideas as they were originally conceived. This is a rare chance to experience the direction the series was preparing to take and to witness how Nosgoth’s next chapter was intended to unfold.

For longtime fans, it is a fun, what-if experience. For new players, it is a fascinating look at the creative ambition that followed Defiance.

    Rebuilding Nosgoth with care

While The Dark Prophecy looks toward an unrealized future, Defiance Remastered focuses on strengthening the experience seasoned players will remember.

Across the main campaign, environmental gaps and stretched geometry have been repaired. Areas that once showed seams now feel structurally complete. Standing at the edge of a cathedral or overlooking a distant ruin, the world holds together without distortion or missing detail.

A camera that works with you

In addition to the original fixed camera, the remaster also boasts a new third-person free camera. For the first time, players can also rotate the camera across those vistas to admire Nosgoth from any angle without breaking immersion.

Now players have clearer sightlines when managing multiple enemies, navigating vertical arenas, and switching between Raziel’s spectral abilities and Kain’s telekinetic control. The encounters remain the same, but players can read and respond to them with far greater confidence.

    Lighting, atmosphere, and player choice

Every level has been relit to enhance mood and depth. Shadows are more deliberate. Fog feels denser and more atmospheric. Interiors carry a heavier sense of presence, while exterior spaces feel more expansive.

If players prefer the original lighting style, they can switch back at any time. The updated lighting system is entirely optional, allowing players to tailor the experience to their preference.

A reworked interface and deeper lore

The original static menu has been replaced with a new ring menu designed to keep players immersed. The interface grants access to the maps, character skins, and a world encyclopedia filled with rich lore. Beyond these, expanded bonus galleries and restored content further support the narrative and smooth out pacing across the campaign.

Sound that responds to the world

Game audio has also received a meaningful upgrade. Additional music is integrated into levels and cutscenes, increasing variety and reinforcing emotional tone throughout the story.

Environmental sound design is also refined. Footsteps now respond accurately to different surfaces. When Raziel crosses a wooden bridge, players can hear the wood cracking beneath him. When Kain steps onto rough stone or plush carpet, the sound shifts accordingly.

    Preserving the legacy

Defiance Remastered is about preservation and clarity. Players experience the same story, the same characters, and the same dramatic weight that defined the original – what changes is the stability, responsiveness, and cohesion of the world around them.

Alongside those improvements, The Dark Prophecy demo offers something rare in game history: the chance to play a chapter that once seemed lost.

Together, they form a more complete view of Legacy of Kain’s past and the paths it might have taken.

  • Resident Evil Requiem Has a Convoluted Challenge Called ‘The Final Puzzle’ — and the Race Is Now on to Get It Fully Solved – IGN

    [ad_1]

Resident Evil Requiem includes numerous Easter eggs and unlockable extras, but none seemingly as complex as ‘The Final Puzzle.’

Warning! Resident Evil Requiem puzzle spoilers follow:

As with other recent Resident Evil games, Requiem includes a list of challenges which add completion points to your playthrough score. At the bottom of the list is the appropriately-named ‘The Final Puzzle’ — which is proving to be something of a headscratcher.

IGN has a work-in-progress guide to The Final Puzzle where significant progress has been made through the challenge’s convoluted early stages, which feel more complex than anything seen in any other Resident Evil game to date — and, seemingly, with still some way left to go.

Exactly what the final outcome or reward for the challenge might be remains unknown — but as the game continues its launch around the world, the hunt for answers here will undoubtedly become a major point of community focus.

The game’s own description for the challenge offers only the vaguest of hints, to “Let the sweet pair hear the voice.” The mechanics of the puzzle, or at least its first part, appear to rely on players picking up or examining a variety of objects throughout the game to determine fragments of a code.

Requiem’s trail of clues relies on players picking up a specific severed hand which, if obtained, can also be scanned later on to provide a hidden RNA code in a blood sample analysis machine. Other items also hide their own codes, providing (with a bit more puzzling work) a version of that RNA sequence that can be plugged into a safe that features buttons labelled with a Star, Sun and Moon.

After that… well, it’s here the trail has gone cold, though likely not for long. We’ll be keeping an eye on further progress made throughout the next few days, as players uncover further steps. For now, however, it’s just fun to see that the game hides this kind of puzzle.

For a far more granular look at each step to-date, IGN’s work-in-progress guide to The Final Puzzle is right here. We’ve also logged how long Resident Evil Requiem takes to beat, and tracked Resident Evil Requiem’s global release times.

“Like the result of an experiment conducted in an underground Umbrella Corporation lab, Resident Evil Requiem successfully splices two separate strains of survival horror together into the one highly infectious new mutation,” IGN wrote in our full Resident Evil Requiem review, which returned a 9/10 score.

  • Highguard Adds New Game Mode That Removes Looting Phase Entirely

    [ad_1]

Highguard is down but not out, with a new update on the way for the beleaguered multiplayer shooter that will add a new action-focused game mode. The update will also add weapon balance changes, as well as quality-of-life updates and bug fixes.

Highguard’s new mode, Raid Rush, focuses on the base attacking and defending phases, with no “pesky looting phase” in between. The new mode cuts out an element of Highguard’s gameplay that many players have complained is tedious, slowing down the flow of a match. Raid Rush will only be available in 5v5–another mode that Wildlight added post-release in response to player feedback.

In fact, 5v5 appears to be the way forward for Highguard, with regular 3v3 raids being disabled for the duration of the Raid Rush event. For the time being, the only way to play 3v3 will be in Highguard’s ranked mode–which players can unlock with wins in either 5v5 or Raid Rush mode.

  • Ghetto Zombies Graffiti Squad: a Mash-up of Urban Co-op Chaos, Music and Style – Xbox Wire

    [ad_1]

    Summary

    • Out today on Xbox Series X|S.
    • Fast-paced combat with multiple enemy types and outrageous weapons.
    • Original soundtrack and unique game design.

Set in a city overrun by the undead, Ghetto Zombies: Graffiti Squad is a single-player, top-down action shooter that blends fast-paced combat, progression-driven gameplay, and a striking pixel art aesthetic inspired by Brazilian urban culture. Players take control of graffiti artists fighting to reclaim the city, not only by surviving waves of zombies, but by conquering territory through graffiti, which plays a central role in map progression and unlocks new paths, challenges, and encounters.

Today Ghetto Zombies: Graffiti Squad officially launches exclusively on Xbox Series X|S, marking a major milestone for Brazilian indie development and for Nuntius Games’ expansion into the console space. Developed by Fogo Games, the title arrives on Xbox as part of the ID@Xbox program, with a launch built around close collaboration, long-term support, and a strong creative identity.

According to Fabio Cacho, Creative Director of Ghetto Zombies, the idea for the game came from a very personal place.

“We always had this idea of imagining how we, growing up in the outskirts, would deal with a zombie apocalypse. That’s where the inspiration started. We brought our neighborhoods, our music culture, characters that represent peripheral youth, and blended all of that with bizarre “Rick & Morty”-style zombies, crazy pixel art shooters like Atomicrops and Enter the Gungeon. We threw everything into a blender, and that’s how Ghetto Zombies came to life.”

The result is a game that feels both chaotic and intentional. Combat is designed to be addictive and challenging, with short, intense sessions and constant progression. The game is structured into four chapters, each featuring around ten stages and ending with a boss encounter. These bosses are not static fights, as the same zombie boss returns at the end of each chapter with new abilities and transformations, forcing players to adapt their strategies over time.

    Weird and Wonderful Arsenal

One of the standout elements of Ghetto Zombies is its arsenal. You have access to over 60 weapons, expanding to more than 70 variations when special versions are included. These range from traditional firearms to absurd creations like a gum ball shooter, ketchup blaster, and explosive spray weapons, each with its own mechanics and combat rhythm. Enemy variety matches that creativity, with 22 different zombie types, featuring distinct attack patterns, mutations, and behaviors that keep encounters unpredictable.

    Endless Training Mode

Outside of the main campaign, this mode is designed for mastery and experimentation. It features infinite rounds, randomized enemies, and escalating difficulty, making it ideal for testing builds, improving skills, and pushing high-score performance. Enhance your hero’s attributes and abilities with a robust upgrade system, built for experimentation and reinforcing the game’s replayability.

All of this is backed by an original soundtrack inspired by Brazilian music and urban rhythms, further strengthening the game’s identity and atmosphere.

    Key Features

    • Single-player, top-down action with fast-paced combat
    • Four playable characters with distinct attributes and playstyles
    • Four campaign chapters with recurring boss battles and evolving challenges
    • Over 60 weapons, expanding to 70+ variations, including absurd and experimental designs
    • 22 enemy types with unique behaviors, mutations, and attacks
    • Graffiti-based progression system that unlocks new areas and challenges
    • Endless training mode with infinite waves and randomized encounters
    • Upgrade system for character abilities and attributes
    • Original soundtrack inspired by Brazilian culture
    • Exclusive to Xbox Series X|S, part of ID@Xbox

Launching Ghetto Zombies as an Xbox exclusive was a deliberate and meaningful decision for the team. As Fabio Cacho explains, the partnership went far beyond platform availability.

“Releasing exclusively on Xbox is a way of putting real care and dedication into a launch that’s very special to us. Xbox invested a significant amount into the project, and the ID@Xbox team supported us constantly through training and initiatives to promote the game. This level of attention matches the importance the platform has had in the game’s existence.”

At its core, Ghetto Zombies: Graffiti Squad is about energy, curiosity, and style. When asked what he hopes players feel when they jump in, Fabio sums it up simply.

“A mix between the urge to blow up zombie heads and the curiosity of finding out what a gum ball gun can actually do.”

With its Xbox Series X|S launch, Ghetto Zombies: Graffiti Squad arrives as a bold, culturally rooted, and creatively fearless action game, offering players a fast, stylish, and distinctly Brazilian take on the zombie genre.

  • Valve’s Loot Boxes Are Gambling And Illegal, Says New York In New Lawsuit

    [ad_1]

New York state’s attorney general is suing Valve over its use of loot boxes in games like Counter-Strike 2. Attorney General Letitia James said Valve “enables gambling through” its popular multiplayer games.

On February 25, the New York attorney general’s office filed a lawsuit against Valve in Manhattan. The state is accusing Valve, the company behind Steam, the largest digital gaming store on the planet, of violating its laws against gambling while also claiming its loot boxes will lead to children becoming addicted to gambling.

“Illegal gambling can be harmful and lead to serious addiction problems, especially for our young people,” said Attorney General James. “Valve has made billions of dollars by letting children and adults alike illegally gamble for the chance to win valuable virtual prizes. These features are addictive, harmful, and illegal, and my office is suing to stop Valve’s illegal conduct and protect New Yorkers.” In the lawsuit and a press release, the state even directly compared Valve’s loot boxes to slot machines.

Attorney General James criticized Valve’s system of charging people to buy digital keys to open virtual loot boxes and said that “Valve intentionally makes some items far harder to win than others, making the rare items more valuable.” In 2024, a single Counter-Strike skin sold for over $1 million.

In its lawsuit against Valve, New York is seeking to permanently stop Valve from promoting gambling features in its video games and wants to force the company behind Half-Life to pay various fines for violating New York’s law.

In 2023 alone, Valve reportedly made nearly $1 billion off of Counter-Strike keys. The skins and cosmetic items found in these digital boxes, which have been a part of many Valve games for years now, can be extremely valuable and are often sold on Steam’s marketplace. Valve gets a cut of every sale on this marketplace and has full control over it. In 2025, Valve made changes to how the skin economy worked and in the process, reportedly wiped out over a billion dollars, leading to a CS2 crash among skin collectors, sellers, and traders. Buying keys, opening boxes, trading skins, and selling cosmetics continues to be a controversial part of Valve’s gaming empire, with YouTube cracking down on videos in 2025 that promote so-called “skin casinos” and third-party marketplaces.

  • The 27″ Samsung QD-OLED Gaming Monitor Drops to $350, Now Includes Resident Evil: Requiem Game Code – IGN

    [ad_1]

Amazon recently discounted the 2025 27″ Samsung G5 OLED to $349.99, making it the lowest price I’ve ever seen for an OLED gaming monitor. Today, the deal just got even better because you can now get a free Resident Evil: Requiem game code with purchase. The offer will automatically be applied during checkout. With this voucher you’ll be able to download the full game when it releases on February 27. The monitor also includes a 3 year warranty with burn-in coverage.

27″ Samsung Odyssey OLED G5 Gaming Monitor for $349.99

Free Resident Evil: Requiem game code with purchase

Free Resident Evil: Requiem Game Code

27” Samsung Odyssey OLED G5 QHD QD-OLED Gaming Monitor

The Samsung Odyssey OLED G5 (G50SF) is a 2025 model 27″ display with a 2560×1440 or QHD resolution, measuring out to a respectable pixel density of 108ppi. It’s equipped with a quantum dot OLED panel that boasts a near-instantaneous 0.03ms response time, near infinite contrast ratio, and true black levels. QD OLED panels are considered better than traditional W-OLED panels because they are brighter and offer a wider color gamut.

This monitor also features a fast 180Hz refresh rate and Nvidia G-Sync compatibility. If you pair it with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 graphics card or higher, you should be able to hit that 180fps ceiling on older games like Fortnite, Apex Legends, and Valorant. For newer games like Battlefield 6 or Black Ops 7, you might need to step up to an RTX 5070 Ti or Radeon 9070 XT to achieve that 180fps ceiling. The display comes equipped with both DisplayPort and HDMI ports.

As mentioned earlier, this monitor has a 3 year warranty that includes OLED burn-in coverage. That’s still pretty uncommon across most OLED brands, especially when you’re looking at the less expensive models. Most come with just a 1 year warranty with no burn-in protection.

As of today, the Samsung OLED G5 has joined a host of Amazon gaming monitor deals that include a PC game code for Resident Evil: Requiem, the next mainline release in the Resident Evil franchise. The game on its own starts at $69.99 for the Standard Edition, so the deal gets you that much more in savings as well as a fresh AAA release to test out your new display.
