The St. Louis Cardinals will have a new man running the show next season. John Mozeliak will be giving way to Chaim Bloom after the season ends.
Bloom was originally hired as an advisor and named the successor to Mozeliak last season. He previously served as chief baseball officer of the Boston Red Sox. It is not confirmed, but many expect Bloom to initiate a rebuild in St. Louis after a couple of disappointing seasons.
The Cardinals have some young talent, but some aging veterans may be on their way out. FanSided’s Mark Powell predicted Bloom would finally trade Nolan Arenado. The Cardinals reportedly tried trading Arenado last offseason to the Houston Astros. He declined to waive his no-trade clause.
“With the Cardinals headed towards a rebuild, he will have no choice but to find a new home if he hopes to end his career on a winning note,” wrote Powell. “The bad news for the Cardinals is that Arenado has just a .656 OPS as of this writing. He’s a below-average hitter at the plate. Arenado still offers plenty of value at the hot corner defensively, but is it enough to overlook the gaping lineup hole he’s becoming offensively? Given his contract, the Cards will have a tough time getting much of value for him.”
Arenado has $42 million and two seasons left on his $260 million deal. The Cardinals will have to find a way to dump him and his contract to kickstart the rebuild.
He is an eight-time All-Star, 10-time Gold Glove Award winner, five-time Silver Slugger and six-time Platinum Glove. While he is no longer in his prime, he may still have some good baseball left. Perhaps a change of scenery and playing on a winning team could help him. He has been a great player for the Cardinals and one of the best third basemen in baseball over the last 20 years.
