A car being towed north on Interstate 85 ended up hanging off a bridge in Rowan County, and investigators are still trying to figure out how it got there.

The baffling discovery was made near sunset on New Year’s Day, about an 8-mile drive northeast from Salisbury.

“Miller’s Ferry Fire Department was dispatched to the scene of a vehicle … collision on a bridge span,” the department reported.

“As a result of the crash, the vehicle being towed was left hanging off the side of the Yadkin River Bridge. At the time, it was uncertain whether the towing vehicle itself entered the river below.”

Boats were launched into the river to check for a submerged vehicle that might have been towing the car. No “secondary vehicle” was found, the Salisbury Post reported.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol led an investigation and told The Charlotte Observer the incident involved “a broke down vehicle,” and no one had gone into the river below. Details of how the vehicle ended up hanging off the bridge were not released.

The crash site is about a 50-mile drive northeast from uptown Charlotte.
