A car crashed Tuesday night into a Johnston County home after leading Wilson Mills police officers on a high-speed chase.
According to authorities. A Wilson’s Mills police officer tried stopping a car speeding through a U.S. Highway 70 work zone, but the driver drove away.
Police said the chase exceeded speeds of 112 mph. The driver shut his lights off and police lost sight of him.
A short time later, officers received a report of a “car into a home” on Creech’s Mill Road outside of Smithfield. Police said the driver had drove through a field to elude authorities, then across someone’s yard before destroying a large pump house, going airborne and into a home.
The WRAL Breaking News Tracker was at the scene of the crash.
Police said first responders found the injured driver sitting at a picnic table in the yard of the damaged home when they arrived. The car ended up in the bedroom of the former homeowner, who moved out two weeks ago.
The driver was transported to WakeMed with minor injuries, and a Johnston County building inspector condemned the home.
Police said the driver is facing several charges.
