RENSSELAER, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The community in the city of Rensselaer came together Monday night for a candlelight vigil to honor Brent Reed. “This is very humbling and overwhelming. And I just couldn’t be more grateful for all of you who are here to celebrate the life of my child,” said Brent’s mom, Anne.
The 32-year-old died after being stabbed to death just after midnight Sunday on John Street.
As community members and candlelight filled the park, Brent’s mom remembered the giving nature of her son. “At the end of his shift, he gave his shoes and socks to one of our homeless population, who was a regular in our department. And that is who Brent was,” said the grieving mother.
Hundreds listened on as Brent’s older brother shared his memories. “I don’t think he really realized how much he did mean to me and how much I looked up to him, even though he was my little brother.”
Brent also being remembered by friends. “I think it’s a testament looking around tonight and all the people that came out in support of him. They didn’t look at him for his flaws or his mistakes in his life. But instead, they appreciate him for who he was.”
Brent’s grandfather, mourning his loss, got up to speak at the vigil. “I have these set of steps going down from my front door. Brent never left my house that he didn’t go down those steps and say to me and my other son, ‘I love you guys. And if you need me, you know where I’m at. Call me.’ Brent is with his grandmother now, who loved him very dearly, and he loved her.” Brent’s grandfather went on to say, “I just hope that someday when my number is called that I’m fortunate enough to be with them.”
Brent’s uncle Tim Bayly explained the funding that is generated by the GoFundMe will do more than just cover funeral expenses. “Those resources are going to be rolled up into a foundation. So, Brent’s legacy will continue,” said Bayly.
The family asked for privacy during this difficult time and thanked their community for the show of love. “Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. From the bottom of our hearts for supporting us the way that you are supporting us. In word and deed,” said Brent’s mother.
Michael Bermudez-Gagnon, 34, of Coeymans, was later arrested for the stabbing. He was charged with second-degree murder and sent to the Rensselaer County Jail without bail.
Police said there is no danger to the public surrounding this incident. Anyone with information can contact Rensselaer PD’s Detectives’ Office at (518) 462-7451.
