Calls for Mastroianni to withdraw candidacy from 111th district race

SCHENECTADY COUNTY, N.Y. (Candidate for New York State Assembly, 111th District, Joe Mastroianni responded to the allegation of him taking election advertisement mail from a resident’s home mailbox at a press conference Wednesday evening in front of the Schenectady County Board of Elections. NEWS 10 was there and was later at a Rotterdam Town meeting and has the latest on what the candidate and some of residents of Rotterdam have to say.

“For obvious reasons I will not comment on this specific story,” stated Joe Mastroianni.

Ring camera video provided by the Schenectady County Democrat Committee Chairman, Frank Salamone, appears to show Mastroianni allegedly stealing an election mailer sent by the incumbent Assemblyman, Angelo Santabarbara. In the video, Mastroianni appears to fold up the political advertisement and put it in his pocket. He is heard uttering, “Bad. Bad. Bad.”

“My campaign has knocked on thousands of doors and prior to this complaint there has not been a single allegation against myself or any of my team for any incidents whatsoever,” claimed Mastroianni.

Mastroianni said what the Democrat party is doing is typical political maneuvering. “It’s no surprise they have to deflect from the real issues facing our community,” explained Mastroianni.

Mastroianni is also on the Rotterdam Town Board and feels that community resources are being wasted on this investigation. “The notion that the alleged conduct warrants law enforcements resources is profoundly troubling,” said the board member.

But what’s more troubling for the politician is the response from the community at Wednesday’s board meeting.

“We’re supposed to put our trust and faith in you people. You just broke that trust, major big time,” said one town resident.

Another resident feels we should revert to the good ol’ days by saying, “I think if we all tried to live and try to act more like the Boy Scouts, because I know they follow Scout Law and Scout law is something everybody in this country and government should follow to the T. And I think this country would be a better place to live.”

And one Rotterdam resident sent in an email comment that included a list of three demands for Joe.

“One, resigned from your town board position. Two, withdraw from your candidacy for assembly in the 111th District of New York. Three, issue a sincere video apology to the voters of Santabarbara, acknowledging your inappropriate behavior and demonstrating genuine remorse.”

What Mastroianni allegedly did is considered a federal offense, and if convicted he could receive up to five years in a federal prison and ordered to pay a fine.
