(FOX40.COM) – The California Department of Social Services announced on Tuesday that magnetic stripe EBT cards are set to expire as new EBT cards make their way to the Sacramento region.

According to CDSS, the cards are set to expire between now and Oct. 25. However, to keep your benefits safe and secure, CDSS will mail out new EBT cards with chip and tap technology to all cardholders.

Current EBT card holders do not need to worry about setting up a new PIN, as the old PIN will transfer over, CDSS said.

CDSS shares some steps that may need to be taken.

  • Activate the new chip-enabled card once it arrives by mail.
  • Request a new card using the ebtEDGE mobile app.
  • Call the EBT Customer Service Center at 1 (877) 328-9677 to request a new card.
  • Visit your county office if your new card hasn’t arrived. (Please note: Wait times may be long.)

If those steps are not taken, CDSS said Magnetic stripe-only EBT cards can still be used until a chip and tap card has been activated or up to 180 days after the new chip and tap EBT card is issued.
