With the federal government shutdown ongoing, CalFresh benefits will be delayed and unfunded to start November.
CALIFORNIA, USA — CalFresh benefits will be delayed in November with the federal government shutdown ongoing, according to Sacramento County.
“This federal shutdown has created significant uncertainty for families who rely on CalFresh. While the County does not control federal funding, our focus is on making sure residents have clear information and know where to turn for local resources.” said Ethan Dye, Director of Human Assistance. “We are in close communication with our partners at the State and with community organizations so that everyone has the same, accurate understanding of what’s happening and what help is available.”
In Sacramento County alone, there are about 270,000 people using CalFresh benefits to feed themselves and their family. The county said thousands of children will also be impacted by the pause.
Benefits are delayed because CalFresh is federally funded, and with the federal government having not passed a budget, programs, operations and services – like CalFresh – will not get funding, according to the county.
Benefits will not be issued unless the government reopens, and it’s not clear when benefits will get funding.
However, if you have an EBT card with benefits currently on it, it can be used as normal.
