Building used by Roseville homeless service provider catches fire

Authorities are investigating after a building used by homeless service provider The Gathering Inn caught fire Sunday night in Roseville, officials said.The Roseville Fire Department was dispatched around 11:17 p.m. to The Gathering Inn on Berkeley Avenue near North Grant Street. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke coming from a rear two-story building used as an office and laundry area, Roseville Fire said. The fire was extinguished and contained to the second floor of the building in an area used only by staff. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.The Gathering Inn’s services include medical respite care, emergency housing and supportive housing for people experiencing homelessness. It said in a statement that no employees or guests were onsite at the time of the fire and arson could a possibility with the fire. “Roseville Fire Department responded quickly but there was extensive damage to the office area on the second floor of the building. The cause of the fire, including arson, is under investigation,” the organization said in a statement. The Gathering Inn said it was making plans for its guests to be be served at other locations during the date and to continue regular operations at local churches at night. The Gathering Inn has made headlines recently because of a dispute over a planned medical respite center for individuals experiencing homelessness in nearby Lincoln.
