JOHNSTOWN, N.Y. (NEWS10)– To start the Knox Middle School’s new “Kick It Up A Knox” initiative, Buffalo Bills tight end, Dawson Knox, gave students a personalized message on Friday. According to the Greater Johnstown School District, the message highlighted the school’s new attendance and positive behavior campaign.
The new initiative aims to encourage students and motivate them to prioritize good attendance and exhibit positive behaviors in the new school year. In a collaborative effort by initiative leaders Nicole Panton, Tracy Ringer, Karlene Peck and teacher Megan Morreale, they reached out to the Bills organization and asked if Dawson Knox would be interested in participating, due to the school and the tight end sharing a name.
He accepted, and the leaders kept the video as a secret until Friday. Students were asked to wear their favorite sports team jersey to school and asked all those in Buffalo Bills jerseys or shirts to sit in the front row.
“I’m challenging you to always be kind to your classmates, do your best each day, and work together as a team,” Knox said in the video message. “Me and my teammates hope you all have a great school year. And remember to kick it up a Knox! Work hard, play harder, and go Bills.”
“It’s no coincidence that we are the Bills, and they are the Bills,” Ringer said. “And for a professional athlete to take time to think that you all are so special—regardless of what team you actually root for—cause that’s what Bills Mafia is about. It’s all about love and kindness. So if you’re not rooting for your team, you’d better be rooting for the Bills, because we’re all here together. THE Bills … the Sir Bills, the Lady Bills, and let’s go Buffalo Bills.”
As the initiative kicks off, students and staff have been working on connecting with one another and a new school routine. According to Principal Panton the message from Knox was a great way to start the year.
“What an incredible way to start the new school year at Knox,” Panton said. “These first two days have been all about connection—building our school community, setting clear expectations, and giving students the space to adjust to new routines, new friendships, and a new environment. We’ve laid a strong foundation that sets us up to pursue academic excellence all year long.”
